This Cup is Half (You choose--Part 2)

Apologies for having to cut this report in half, but I promise you that what's to follow will make the wait worth your time!
Lots more--Cup half full, and Cup half empty, both!!

Let's return to the 400's!
As noted in my previous post, Oscar Husillas ran 44.92, but was DQ'ed!
The win--so called--went to Pavel Maslak--time of 45.47!!
Did I happen to mention that one of those 5 in Heat 3 that were ALL DQ'ed included Bralon Taplin, who came in as the favorite??
What a sad state of affairs!!

The Women's event had a different kind of deterrent to its bounty!
I spoke to this in my Women's Preview--the fact that the (then) 2 fastest Women of 2018--Sydney McLaughlin and Lynna Irby--didn't even try to get here--via the USATF route!
More on them later!

Shakima Wimbley led the Qualifiers in the Heats with a 51.34.
But there were 3 DQ's--including one of the favorites, Lea Sprunger!!

The final went to Courtney Okolo--by a BIG margin!!
Her 50.55 beat Wimbley by 0.92 seconds!!
For Okolo, it's the Age 23 Record!
She moves from 6th A-T US to 4th!
And this makes her 21st A-T World, tied with 2 others!
Elidh Doyle took the Bronze with 51.60.

Cut OFF my World DDD was one Lynna Irby--who had just recently gotten ON the list with that 50.62 behind McLaughlin!!
(She might RETURN to the list at the NCAA's!!)

Since we're in the realm of the 400's, I'll move now to the 4X400 Relays!
Starting with the Women, the US team had no problem winning!!
Their 3:23.85 beat Poland by 2.24 seconds!!
The 4-some (& their splits) were Quanera Hayes (51.56), Georgeanne Moline (50.87, that included a stumble that slowed her some on the 2nd lap), Wimbley (51.27), and Okolo, anchoring in 50.15!!

But what if McLaughlin and Irby had been on that team, and had run the same times that once were 1 & 2 in the World??
If they replaced the 2 slowest legs--Hayes & Wimbley--the US's finishing time would have been 1.69 seconds faster--or 3:22.16!!

Anyway, the US time is the WC Meet Record, and the US National Record!
They remain 2nd A-T Nation!!
Poland's 3:26.09 smashed their National Record by over 3 seconds!!
They move from 11th A-T Nation to 3rd!!
Great Britain followed in 3:29.38, with Ukraine 4th in 3:31.32.
Italy's 3:31.55 in 5th becomes their new National Record.
They move up 1 spot, from 16th to 15th A-T Nation!!

But the Men's race--WOW!!
A totally unsung & unheralded & unknown (at least to ME!!) squad from Poland BEAT the United States of America!!
How often does THAT happen??
Their 4-some of Karol Zalewski, Rafal Omelko, Luhasz Knawczuk, and Jakub Krzcirna (spelling for all??) ran the World Record time of 3:01.77!!
It's also the WC Meet Record, as well as their National Record!
They move from 3rd A-T Nation to the Top!!

The US ran 3:01.97, missing their NR by a mere 0.01 seconds!!
(See previous posts for an explanation about all the different "AR's" on the various books!!  I accepted their 3:01.96 from 2006!!)
They move DOWN the list--from 1st to 2nd!!

Belgium (aka the Borlees) got their NR with their 3:02.51.
They are 3rd A-T Nation!
Trinidad & Tobago ended just 0.01 back of Belgium, their 3:02.52 their National Record!
They move from 10th A-T Nation, tied with 1 other, to 4th!!
The Czech Republic and Great Britain were next!

But the Home Nation were DQ'ed!!
Gosh, you just don't DO that in front of Lord Coe and the home crowd!!
So--they were reinstated!!
Of course.

In the Heats, Portugal's 3:35.43 made them 20th A-T Nation!!

The 60's--both flat and with hurdles--went pretty much according to plan!
(NOT the DECADE--the races at the WC's!!  LOL)

Kendra Harrison led the 60H Heats with her 7.77.
Murielle Ahoure sped 7.01 in the 60 Semi's, attaining the Age 30 Record!!
But in the Final, she went even faster, being the only Woman in B'ham to get under 7 seconds!
Her 6.97 breaks her own Age 30 Record!
It also breaks her own National Record of the Ivory Coast!!
She moves from 9th A-T World to 6th, tied with 1 other!

Following was an All-Star group--Marie Josee Ta Lou (7.05 in 2nd), Mujinga Kambundji (also 7.05, but in 3rd), Elaine Thompson (7.08 in 4th), and Dafne Schippers (7.10 in 5th)!!

In the Men's 60 heats, Christian Coleman almost False Started, then stumbled, fell behind, but rallied to advance with a 6.71.
Ronnie Baker's 6.57 led the Heats!
Christina Manning's 7.83 won one of the Women's 60H Semi's!
Devynne Charleton ran 7.89, becoming the National Record holder of the Bahamas!!
Kendra Harrison's 7.79 was the fastest Semi.
But Sally Pearson--running 7.92--missed out, not making the final!!
Nadine Visser took the other Semi, her 7.83 becoming the National Record of Switzerland!!
She misses the World DDD by 0.02 seconds!!

Andrew Pozzi led the Men's 60H Semi's with his 7.53.
Coleman sped a 6.45 to lead the 60 Semi's!

The Final of the Women's 60H went to Kendra Harrison's 7.70!
It's the WC Meet Record!!
It ties the US National Record!
She moves from 2nd A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 1st, tied with 1 other!!
And she moves from 3rd A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 2nd, tied with Harrison!!
Manning came 2nd in 7.79!
Visser was next in 7.84, with Sharika Nelvis back in 4th (preventing a US sweep!!).
Cindy Roleder ran 7.87 in 5th!

Christian Coleman came through, winning the 60 flat in 6.37!!
It's the WC Meet Record!
Bingtian Su improved to 6.42 in 2nd, which breaks his own National Record of China, and his own Age 28 Record!!
He moves from 6th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 5th, tied with 1 other!
Ronnie Baker took the Bronze with his 6.44.

The 60H Semi's went to Andrew Pozzi's 7.46.
Milan Trajkovic's 7.51 is the National Record of Cyprus!!
Pozzi matched that time in the Final, beating Jarret Eaton's 7.47.
Next came Aural Manga of France in 7.54, with Aries Merritt next in 7.56!
Trajkovic was one of the DQ's!!

The opening events--the High Jumps--were pretty much (as expected) one-Woman & one-Man shows!
BUT that one MAN was NOT Mutaz Barshim!!!
In maybe the most surprising result, Danil Lysenko beat Barshim by an inch--7-8.75 to 7-7.75!!
Wow!
But Mariya Lasitskene extended her total dominance, winning easily with her 6-7!
(She had 3 misses at 6-9.50!!)
Back--WAY back!--were Vashti Cunningham, Alessia Trost, and Morgan Lake, all with 6-4's!
BTW, both winners come rom RUSSIA!!

Anita Marton took the Women's SP with her 6th round throw of 64-4.50!
Danniel Thomas-Dodd improved to 63-0.75, breaking her own National Record of Jamaica!!

In my Men's Preview, I sort of just "added" Tom Walsh's name to my list of "others" who might contend!
HA!!
His 73-2.50 in Round 6 completely overwhelmed the field!!
It's the WC Meet Record, the old mark being held by Ulf Timmermann, dating from 1987!!
It breaks his own National Record of New Zealand, and moves him from 18th A-T World all the way into 4th!!
He turned 26 on March 1st, but no Age record!!

David Storl and Tomas Stanek both threw 70-4.25, getting 2nd and 3rd, the positions decided by 2nd best throws in the series!
Darlen Romani's 70-1.50 is the National Record of Brazil!!
Mesud Pezer's 69-4.75 is the National Record of Bosnia Herzogovina!

To close off my World Championships report, we turn to the Triple Jumps!
Will Claye's 57-2.25 in Round 4 took a close 3-way battle in the Men's event!
Almir Dos Santos of Brazil finished 2nd with his 57-1.50 in Round 5.
Nelson Evora's 57-1 in the 3rd Round took the Bronze, as well as broke his own Age 33 Record!!

The Women's event was also good!
Kimberly Williams led with her 3rd Round 47-8.25!
In the 4th Round, Ana Peleteire (sp?) got a mark of 47-3, beating Andreea Panturvu's 47-0.25!
Keturah Orji got a 5th Round mark of 46-11.50!
But then came the favorite--Yulimar Rojas--with her winning 48-0 in the last Round!

Okay, friends, I have several more marks, with SOME of them from the burgeoning OUTdoor season!!
But let's finish off my INdoor report first!!

In the New England HS Champs, Jacqueline Gaughan ran a fast Two Mile (NOT the 3200!!) of 10:09.20!
This makes her 9th A-T HS!!

An old mark that needs an addition--
Geraldine Ruckstahl's 4455 Pentathlon from February is the National Record of Switzerland!
At that time, she was 19 years old!
She's turned 20 since!

In a previous post, I reported Katelyn Tuohy breaking the Soph Class Record with a 1500 in 4:23.91.
But in today's eTN from T&FN, it's being recorded as 4:23.38.
I'm going to hold off making the change--if necessary--until I see which mark is the correct one!!

Alex Hill threw the WT 73-9.50 for the Age 19 Record!
And in 2nd place happens to be the new Age 18 Record holder--Brent Fairbanks's 72-8.50!

Trey Knight turned to the International weight WT--the 35 pounder--and threw it 58-5--for the Soph Class Record!!
Shelby Moran improved her WT to 62-4, moving from 15th A-T HS to 7th!
Nate Patterson HJ'ed 7-2, making him 14th A-T HS, tied with a MASSIVE 15 others!!

Kelsey Chmiel did a 3000 in 9:27.88, but it's not a PR!
Vanessa Watson (No relation to Samantha!!) ran the fastest 600 of 2018--1:30.09--moving from 24th A-T HS to 8th!
Paris Peoples wasn't far behind, her 1:30.59 making her 15th A-T HS!
Lily Flynn ran the 1000 in 2:45.83, making her 6th A-T HS!
Katherine Lee's 2:46.91 makes her 8th A-T HS!

Turning to OUTdoors--
Johannes Vetter opened his JT season in South Africa, throwing it 299-3!
Sean Lee HJ'ed 7-3.
Devin King PV'ed 18-8.25, tying his Collegiate PR from 2016!
Kathryn Mitchell is getting better!!
Her latest JT is her 224-11, breaking her own Age 35 Record, and her own National Record of Australia--both from earlier in 2018!!
She moves from 11th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 7th!!

Rachel Cliff won the Half Marathon in Woodlands Texas, her 1:10:08 becoming the National Record of Canada!!
In the Lake Biwa (Japan) Marathon, Jake Robertson's 3rd place time of 2:08:26 broke Rod Dixon's National Record of New Zealand!
Dixon's 2:08:59 was run in the NYC Marathon of 1983!!

There was a pretty good HS meet called the Sam Burley---whoever he is, or was!!
(Sorry!)
Anyway, Anthony Schwartz had quite the day!
He sped the 100 in 10.13--but with a slight wind of 2.1.
Then he took the 200 in 20.47--wind of 1.3--which makes him 14th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
He beat Tyrese Cooper's 20.88.

But Cooper won the 400--his 46.40 beating Jamal Walton's 46.77!
Then he came up with a groin injury--which he believes won't keep him from the NBIN meet!!

Thomas Burns ran the 300H in 36.97!
Not bad--all the above--for early March OUTdoors!!

Finally, in a breaking BUT unconfirmed report, Ruth Jebet is said to have tested positive for EPO!!
More on that next time, or as soon as I know anything!
If true, this could be HUGE!!

See you in a few days with my NCAA and NBIN Previews!

Let me add a Special Note---
Roger Bannister is maybe the most iconic name in Track & Field--outside of maybe Jesse Owens!!
The number 3:59.4 is imbedded in every runner's psyche--and the words "Sub-4 minute Mile" are equally memorable!

What's left to say about that first sub-4, the track where it happened (Iffley Road in Oxford), the MAN??
He retired in 1955--after a fairly brief elite career!!
But then he became a leading figure in the field of neurology!

He's been honored by Kings & Queens, Lords & Ladies, Presidents and your average 6 minute Miler!
His name is known Worldwide, and forever will be, no matter how many 1000's of sub-4's are run!!

I started my involvement in T&F in 1962, just 8 years after Bannister's Historic race!
Please find and read his memoir "The Four Minute Mile"!
It's probably available on Amazon, or at your local library!
Watch the movies and documentaries made about him!

But just simply hold him--and what he did--in your hearts!
And may the great Sir Roger Bannister Rest In Peace!!
