Back to the Basics (Records & Marks)

Albuquerque is not known for tornados, earthquakes, floods, or hurricanes.
Yet the aftermath of the Women's 3000 race there seemed to bring on all those disasters...and more!
While no dead bodies were found on the 200 meter oval, there were several emotional deaths strewn about in the 24 hours that followed the race.
Basically, it came down to this sequence of events:

1. With about 200 meters left, Gabriele Grunewald tried to pass Jordan Hasay (in pursuit of leader Shannon Rowbury), but Hasay moved out, and Grunewald bumped into her, slightly throwing Hasay off balance.
Then Grunewald, sprinting hard, brushed by (but didn't touch) Rowbury, and went on to win in a slow 9:23 and change.

2. Hasay's Coach, Alberto Salazar, didn't see it that way.  He thought Grunewald's "bump" prevented Hasay from winning the race, or at least finishing 2nd to NOP's Rowbury.  So he filed a protest to disqualify Gabriele.

3. After 2 (or 3?  or 4?  or 15??) protests were filed, and Salazar exercised his screaming techniques, and after he almost punched out Jerry Schumacher (Don't ask!!!), USATF officials DQ'ed Grunewald, making the Sopot 3000 team Rowbury and Hasay.

4. Then the Twitterverse erupted.  (Forgot to add volcanic eruption to the above list of disasters.  And a couple of tsunamis!)  Wow!  Fans, media folk, friends, family, dogs, cats, and even some elite athletes sent tweets (like bullets!) flying every which way, attacking Salazar, USATF, NOP, Nike....even Hasay and Grunewald to some extent!  It was like New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina!  (Or like any boxer facing Muhammed Ali in his prime!!)

5. Jordan Hasay, bless her little darling self, finally surrendered to the fates.  (Or maybe to threats of knee-bashing by Tonya Harding's sidekicks??)  She wrote a heart-rending statement, saying she was giving up her place on the team, which allowed Grunewald to finally be declared the winner (for a second time!!) of the race, and as a member of Team USA.

5. All's well that ends....not so well!!

Well folks, I'm sure you'll find lots more stuff on this on Twitter and other sites.
So let's FINALLY get back to the basics of this blog....records and marks.
Since there's quite a bit, I'll try to strip it all down to one-liners, so as to save space (and reading time).
On your marks.....(HAHAHA)......

Sharon Day-Munroe broke the AR for the Pentathlon with 4805 points at USATF.
She moves from 7th to 1st on the US list, and she's 12th A-T World.
Also a Meet Record.

Sami Spenner scored 4498, making her 3rd A-T Collegiate & 6th A-T US.

AJ Kruger's 77-9.25 WT is the Age 35 record.

Michael Lihrman gets the Collegiate Junior Class record with his 79-7.50.
Don't know his birthdate, but the mark would break either the Age 21 or Age 22 records!
Lambert (1st name?) is now 19th A-T US with his 75-7.50 WT.

Other Multi marks:
Gray Horn's 6071 in the Hept is 16th A-T US.
Barbara Nwabi's 4406 is 9th A-T US.
Lindsey Lettow's 4284 is 17th A-T US.
Brianna Leslie's 4182 makes her 20th A-T US.
Lindsey Schwartz's 4161 makes her 21st A-T US.
And Jeff Mohl's 5746 Hept score is 20th A-T US.

More WT marks:
Amanda Bingson threw 73-6.75 at USATF, and is now 17th A-T World and 14th A-T US.
(Actually, that's it!!  Usually there's lots more!!)

Ryan Whiting's SP of 72-11.25 at USATF moves him from 9th to 5th on the World DDD, and from 5th to 3rd on the US DDD.
Kurt Roberts (also at USATF) threw 70-6.50, which gives him an equal-13th A-T US, tied with 1 other.
Joe Kovacs (USATF) threw 70-5, tying him with 1 other at 15th A-T US.
Felicia Johnson's SP of 58-10.25  makes her 24th A-T US.

Some PV marks:
Mary Saxer's winning height of 15-5.50 (beating Jenn Suhr!!) at USATF ties her for 15th A-T World (with 1 other), and gives her 4th A-T US.
Sandi Morris, Kat Majester, and Emily Grove all PR'ed at 14-9.50 at USATF, tying all three at 15th A-T US!
Lexi Weeks, an Arkansas HS'er, PV'ed 13-6.50 for # 10 A-T HS indoors.

A few good sprint and hurdle marks came out of USATF:
Marvin Bracy ran 6.48 in the 60 flat for 21st A-T World (tied with 6 others!), and 13th A-T US, tied with 3 others.
Nia Ali's (Love those short names!!) 7.80 60H's win at USATF makes her 17th A-T World (tied with 3 others), and 5th A-T US.
Janay DeLoach Soukup's (Short names???) 7.82 60H nabs her 22nd World (tied with 7 others!), and 7th A-T US (with 1 other).
Lakeisha Lawson's 7.09 flat 60 ties her at 12th A-T US, along with 2 others.  She was 14th (with 2 others) before.

I have some TJ marks for you.
Amanda Smock's winning 45-5.75 at USATF ties her (with 1 other) at 10th A-T US.
Chris Carter's USATF-winning 56-3.25 moves him to 14th A-T US, tied with 1 other.
Chris Benard's 55-9 is now 24th A-T US.
A new HS 10th Grade record was set by J'man Ward (from Illinois) with his 50-2.50.
He misses the Top 24 Indoor list by one-half inch!!!

Ruth Beitia HJ'ed 6-6.75 for the Indoor Age 34 record.

Tori Polk LJ'ed 21-11.75 at USATF to tie her at 15th A-T US with 1 other.
Tyron Stewart LJ'ed 26-11.75, tying him at 21st A-T US with 1 other.

Finally, a few more track marks to report.
Georgetown's Women's DMR team ran 10:55.63 for 5th School A-T Collegiate!
Dan Curtis ran a 3000 in 8:23.85 for 12th A-T Indoor HS.
Gabe Montague ran a 1000 in 2:25.45 for 9th A-T HS.
(Still not done compiling my Indoor 1000 and 600 and relay lists, so Montague's mark may place him higher or lower!  Will let you know when I'm done.)
Joanna Atkins ran 51.13 for 400, making her 9th A-T US.
The Eastern States HS meet at the Armory, just completed, had a great Men's 400.
Zyaire Clemens won in 47.13, good for 11th A-T HS.
He was followed by Taylor McLaughlin's 47.30 and Rai Benjamin's 47.31, good for 14th and 15th A-T HS Indoor, respectively.

The USATF Women's 800 brought 3 good times.
Ajee Wilson's winning 2:00.43 is now 12th A-T US.
Chanelle Price was inches behind at 2:00.48, so she's 13th A-T US.
And comebacking Molly Beckwith ran 2:01.87, her Indoor PR, good for 24th A-T US, but tied with 1 other!

No records or PR's, but I have to mention the 4:07.05 1500 victory by Mary Cain.
Second was Treniere Moser in 4:09.96.
Everyone else was 4:13 or slower!
Remember, this was at 5000 foot altitude!
(One altitude expert says it's worth 4:01 at sea level!)
She sprinted a 60 second last lap!
This woman.....this 17 year old GIRL.....is now certifiably WORLD Class!!!

Hopefully, the "weather" will clear up in the next few days, and we can return full time to what this blog (and our sport!!!!!) is meant to be about......records, marks, and competition!!

Blessings to Gabriele Grunewald and Jordan Hasay, the only REAL winners of that USATF fiasco!!

Open Letter to Alberto Salazar

We don't know each other, and have never met.
(Though I've seen you run!)
But I'm going to speak to you as if we've been lifelong friends.
In this case, however, I'm speaking to you because you need some good advice.
Quick!

What happened yesterday in Albuquerque was wrong.
And you were the cause of it.
Thus, only you have the ability and the opportunity to turn this fiasco around.
As Nike says, Just Do It!

We all know what happened.
It's been all over Twitter, T&FN Message Board, Let'sRun MB, and probably several other sites.

The Women's 3000 was won by Gabriele Grunewald in a slow 9:23, but with a stinging last lap kick.
She beat 2 of your star runners, Shannon Rowbury and Jordan Hasay.

In doing so, "Gabe" had a bit of contact with your 2 stars.
But come on, Alberto, you've been there and done that.
Have you never seen contact in European races, or even in races run here in the United States?
Contact that was far worse than what Grunewald did, and that was never appealed or even considered for appeal?

First, let's face some facts.
Jordan is a nice girl, with a great deal of talent.
But she's not in the same league as 4:00 and 4:01 1500 gals Rowbury and Grunewald.
She lost to Abbey D'Agostino over the last 109 meters of the BU Mile, even though ahead of her by 1.11 seconds at the 1500 point!
(And lost to Mary Cain as well!)
It took her 42 seconds to run the last 218 meters in her recent 2 mile!

So being beaten, and beaten soundly, by Shannon and Gabe shouldn't turn you into a raving lunatic.
(Which, sad to say, is how you behaved after the race!  Reminds me of how Mary Slaney reacted after her "contact" with Zola Budd in 1984.)

1. You approached Jerry Schumacher (Ryan Hill's coach) because you felt Hill affected Galen Rupp's race the same way you felt Grunewald affected Hasay's race.  Witnesses say someone had to pull you back from physically confronting him....or worse!
2. You filed an appeal, first screaming at the judges (witnesses said).
3. When that failed, you filed a second appeal.
4. You won.

But did you?
Is this the way to win races?
Is this the "genius" at work that people like Mary Cain speak of?
Is this how you deal with losing?

Alberto, you need to turn this around.
Today!
We know your loyalty to Nike, to your athletes, and to the greater good of our sport.
But this time you went too far.
Yes, you!
Not Gabriele Grunewald.
Not the USATF administration.
Not Nike.
Here's my advice, Alberto.

Go to the USATF Appeals Board, or whatever it's called, and tell them you want to withdraw or renege on your appeals.
Tell them you were wrong to have done so in the first place.
Tell Nike to back you up on this.
Make sure that Gabe Grunewald is declared the winner of the 3000 meters, and that she will run in Sopot.

Then go to Jordan and explain to her what racing against professionals is all about.
(No, Jordan, it's not like Collegiate or High School running.  You're in the "Big Show" now!)

Finally, go to Gabriele, and tell her you're sorry for whatever emotional or psychological damage you've caused her!

Then gather your athletes--those who are to race today--and wish them luck!

You would teach a good lesson to that high school girl you train.
After all, she respects you, and thinks you're "cool".

Be cool, Alberto.
Just Do It!

Wrapping up the week in Record fashion

Yes, Joe (and Jane), there WAS other stuff going down in T&F this week besides those 2 WR's and Millrose!
Actually, my first Millrose post didn't have all of the good results from there.
Just was too much else to report, and I didn't have all the data prepared.
So, let's start with that "Pre Classic" of Indoor meets!

I don't have Walk records or lists in my T&F Record Book, but Millrose had what APPEARS to be two upsets in the Mile Walks they had.

Rachel Seaman (Any relation to Tim?) won over OG and WC 20K walker Maria Michta, 6:17.29 to 6:19.00.
And Andreas Gustafsson of Sweden won over WC 50K Gold medal winner Robert Heffernan, 5:34.45 to 5:39.75.

Not only didn't Nick Symmonds break the AR of 2:17.86 in the 1000 meters, but he finished 3rd!
Pierre Ambroise-Bosse of France took the win with his time of 2:17.63, which moves him into 21st place on the All-Time World list.
Eric Sowinski was 1st American with his 2:18.63.
That's # 7 A-T US!
Symmonds finished in 2:18.87 for 8th on the US list!
Mike Rutt ran 2:19.67, which places him 17th A-T US.
(ERROR!  Added many hours later!  Yes, Rutt ran 2:19.67.  And yes, Rutt's time would've placed him 17th A-T US.  That is, unless he'd already BEEN number SIX A-T US...with his 2:18.27 from 2013!!  Tiny wee mistake!!  LOL)

That Women's 800 race, which was SUPPOSED to have Mary Cain in it--until she switched to the Mile!--was won by Ajee Wilson in 2:01.81.
This beat another teenage wunderkind, Iceland's Anita Hinriksdottic--whose running form was said by one tweeter to be giving Alberto Salazar migraines!--ran 2:02.66--not a PR--to take 4th!
Wilson's time was an Indoor PR, and places her in a tie with 1 other for 20th A-T US.

I don't keep 300 meter records or lists, but Shaunae Miller's 36.10 appears to be # 3 A-T in the World!
And Francena McCorory's 36.50 would appear to be 11th A-T World, and 4th A-T US!!
(I'll make a correction if I find out differently!)
Anyway, it was a GREAT race!!

Marvin Bracy took the 60 in 6.50, tying him at 19th A-T US with 3 others.
It's also the Age 20 record!
Tori Bowie's 7.14 tied her (with 2 others) at 24th A-T US.

Janay DeLoach Soukup's 7.91 60H win ties her at 18th A-T US with 1 other.

In Millrose HS action, Luke Gavigan's 1 mile winning time of 4:08.96 just misses my Top 24 Indoor DDD list!
But Caroline Alcorta's 4:46.06 moves her into 19th place A-T HS Indoors!

And Desiree Freier's 14-0 PV makes her equal-3rd A-T HS Indoors, tying her with 1 other.

Another HS Pole Vaulter, Devin King, made TWO improvements in his Indoor PR, first to 17-4, then today to 17-8!
The latter mark makes him second A-T on the Indoor HS list!

Moving on from Millrose, some Collegiate PV'ers made news this past week.
Sam Kendricks vaulted 18-8.75, making him 9th A-T Collegiate, along with 2 others.
Shawn Barber vaulted 18-6.75, tying him with 1 other at 18th A-T Collegiate.
And Kairlin Petrillose reached 14-7.25, tying her (with 4 others) in 8th place A-T Collegiate.

As usual this indoor season, a few Weight Throwers moved onto or up my Top 24's.

At Millrose, Amanda Bingson took just 3rd (behind Gwen Berry and Jeneva McCall), but she was the only one of the three to PR.
Bingson's 72-3.50 makes her 22nd A-T US.

Brea Garrett's 74-4.25 makes her 9th A-T Collegiate, 11th A-T US, and 13th A-T World!
(Three for the price of one!)

Joe Kovacs's 77-0.75 at Boston makes him 19th A-T US.
Gabby Figueroa's 62-8 improved her PR by 3 feet 9 inches, and moved her from 12th A-T HS to 3rd!
Two other HS WT'ers, Haley Showalter and Kamryn Brinson, had good marks.
Showalter's 59-0 makes her 12th A-T HS, and Brinson's 58-8.75 makes her 14th.

Venerable Mac Wilkins is no longer on my Top 24 US list in the Indoor Shot Put!
Ryan Crouser's 69-8 removed him!
Crouser's mark makes him # 11 A-T Collegiate, and 22nd A-T US!
Wilkins's 1977 mark of 69-1.50 is GONE!!

Two female HS SP'ers made some major inroads on the Indoor HS list.
Stamatia Scarvelis's 53-8.25 ties her with Raven Saunders for 4th A-T HS.
(BTW, where has Raven flown off to?  After her shocking 11 foot (!!) improvement to 53-8.25 back in December, she's disappeared from results sheets!  Hope she's not injured or sick!)
And Ashlie Blake threw 52-3.50 to make her 10th A-T HS.

Dezerea Bryant seems to be the best female Collegiate sprinter this season.
She improved twice in the 200, first to 22.82 last week, then to 22.80 this week
The latter mark places her 17th on the All-Time US list, and 19th A-T Collegiate.
(ERROR!!  I'm adding this a day later, but "better late than never", eh?  It was Kamaria Brown, NOT Dezerea Bryant, who ran that 22.80!  So it's Brown who's 17th A-T US and 19th A-T Collegiate!  Bryant's 22.82 PR still stands!)
(WHOA!!!  Another error!!  Seems Ms Brown ALSO had a faster time from 2013!!  She ran 22.73 last year, and currently is # 13 A-T Collegiate!  She's ALSO tied for 13th on the US A-T list--with Carlette Guidry, no less!!!!  My apologies, Ms Brown!!  And readers!)

She also sprinted a 60 in 7.16.
This moves her from 21st A-T Collegiate into a tie with 4 others at 10th place!

I 100% disdain the abominations called the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, indoors and out!
But I must mention a great 3200 time by Hannah DeBalsi.
She ran it in 10:19.26, which would make her 16th A-T HS Indoors......IF another 18 meters had been tacked on that distance!

Another distance race, rarely run indoors (or out!), the HS 5000, produced 2 good marks.
Kirsten Olling ran 16:56.83 for 18th A-T Indoors.
And Kelli Jackson ran 17:01.71 to make her 23rd A-T HS.
Both are from Michigan high schools.

Finally, there's a new Frosh Class record in the women's HS PV!
Carson Dingler (Georgia) went over the bar at 12-8, breaking the somewhat iconic Samantha Shepard's 9th grade Indoor mark of 12-7.50.
That mark was set in the early years of HS Pole Vaulting for girls, back in 1999.
Shepard was one of the first BIG names in the event!

Quite a week.
And quite a weekEND!
Two WR's, Millrose...and all of the above!!

See you soon!

TWO World Records....and then there's Millrose!

A most historic day!
Filled with high-flying men and fast women!
Track and Field fans worldwide will remember this day!
And here's why.

The King is dead; Long live the King!
Yes, Sergey Bubka is no longer the highest-flying PV'er in all of T&F history.

Renaud Lavillenie of France took flight in Donetsk, all the way up to 20-2.50 (or 6.16 metric), surpassing the living legendary wonder, Sergey Bubka, as the Indoor WR holder.
Bubka's best of 20-2 was 21 years old!
Bubka still has the Outdoor WR of 20-1.75, from 1999.
Lavillenie's mark moves him from 2nd to 1st on the World Indoor list.
He is now the Age 27 record holder, which was a 20-1 by Bubka.
He of course extends his own French National record.

This mark came mere minutes after Ethiopian speedster Genzebe Dibaba finished her WR 2 Mile in Birmingham, England!
Her time of 9:00.48 took care of Meseret Defar's 2009 WR of 9:06.26 by 5.78 seconds.
And she negative split the race, her miles in 4:31.7 and 4:28.8!
She was all alone the last half of the distance!
It's the Age 23 record and the Ethiopian record.

Hiwot Ayalew was 2nd in 9:21.59, good for 8th A-T in the World.
Stephanie Twell was next at 9:42.41.
Helen Clitheroe is Britain's Ageless Wonder, as her 9:50.65 gives her the Age 40 record!
(However, she missed the Age 40 record for 3000 enroute!)

There were a few other noteworthy marks at that meet.
I'll report them before we set off for New York!  LOL

Eric Kynard HJ'ed a quarter-inch Indoor PR,  his winning 7-8 jump enough to move him from 11th A-T US, where he was tied with 3 others, to another 3-way tie, this time in 7th A-T US!

James Dasaolu sprinted 60 meters in 6.47, moving him from a 7-way tie in 20th on the World Indoor list, to a tie at 16th with 4 others.
Jimmy Vicaut tied his 6.48 PR in 2nd.

Mohammed Aman ran a great Indoor 800, his 1:44.52 making him 3rd A-T Indoors!!
He was 15th.
It also is the Ethiopian record and the Age 20 record, breaking his own marks!

Second in the race was South African Andres Olivier, whose 1:44.99 is 15th A-T World, and a South African record.
(ERROR!  Olivier did NOT break the SA record!  That's still the 1:44.91 run by Mbulaeni Mulaudzi in 2008!)

Twenty year old Brit Laura Muir didn't get on the World list, but her 7 second PR of 4:05.32 is # 2 on the British A-T list, behind only Kelly Holmes!
And she won the race with a great kick!

The Millrose Games.

No WR's were broken, but once again American middle distance depth was on display for all the world to see.
Take away Dibaba's 3 WR's this year, and this meet pretty much rewrote several Indoor lists, following that incredible other US Indoor meet last week in Boston.

Bernard Lagat broke Steve Scott's Indoor 2000 meter AR of 4:58.6, which was 33 years old!!
His 4:54.74 cut the mark by 3.86 seconds!
Not bad for the iconic new Age 39 record holder!

And what followed Lagat was another parade of Americans--with one lonely Canadian thrown in.
That Canadian, NOP member Can Levins, set the Canadian record with his 4:55.35 in 2nd!
Then came, in order....
David Torrence in 4:56.99, # 2 A-T US
Andrew Bumbalough in 4:57.35, # 3 A-T US
Evan Jager in 4:57.56, # 4 A-T US!!
And that's not all!
Donn Cabral ran 5:00.18 for # 7 A-T US.
Then there was Dan Huling in 5:02.41, which gave him 9th A-T US!!

BTW, Lagat's mark gives him 5th place on the World Indoor list!
Torrence moves into 14th place, World.
Bumbalough is now 17th World, and Jager is 18th A-T World!
Levins is 7th on that list!

The Men's Wanamaker Mile gave 2nd placer Lawi Lalang the Collegiate Record, his 3:52.88 beating Chris O'Hare's 2013 mark by 0.10.
It's also the Senior Class record for Collegians!

Winner was Will Leer, his 3:52.47 moving him into 16th place on the World Indoor list.
He also moves from 22nd A-T US all the way up to 7th place!

Nick Willis's 3:53.02 makes him 22nd A-T World, but just missed John Walker's venerable NZ record of 3:52.8, dating from 1981.

Kim Conley continued her hot running, winning the 3000 in 8:48.35.
This places her 13th A-T US!

Betsy Saina followed Conley in 8:50.60.
Then once again, a deep field of Americans (and a trio of foreigners) followed, running some list-making times.

Abbey D'Agostino proved again she's the top female Collegian in the 1500-5000 range of events.
She ran a great time of 8:51.91, which makes her 4th fastest ever Collegian Indoors!
She'd been 17th before.
It also makes her 17th All-Time US.

Another Collegian, Kate Avery of Iona, ran 8:56.20 for 6th A-T on the Indoor Collegiate list.

Between these fell...
Italy's Margherita Magnani, who flew all the way over to finish 3rd with a time of 8:51.81, just 0.10 ahead of a young lady with another Italian name!  LOL
Gabrielle Grunewald returned to form with her 8:53.87, good for 20th A-T US.
Lucy Van Dalen of NZ ran 8:53.95.
Then came Avery, followed by Nicole Schappert in 9:00.84, and Brie Felnagle in 9:01.57.

Think I'd forget Mary Cain??
Think again!
After all, how can anyone forget this 17 year old charmer AND sensational talent, who just happened to beat a VERY deep America field of milers?

And she didn't even break any records in doing so!!!

Here's the list of finishers.

1. Mary Cain.  She won in 4:27.73, her 2nd fastest time.
2. Treniere Moser.  She's back!  Her 4:28.86 improves her 4:29.93 from 2006, moving her from 19th A-T US Indoors up to 15th!
3. Canadian Nicole Sifuentes ran 4:28.97.
4. Sarah Brown missed her 4:29.62 PR, but ran a solid 4:30.13.
5. Emma Coburn was next, with her 4:32.01.
(I'm going to skip the 6th placer for now.  But hang on, because SHE made NEWS!!!)
7. Morgan Uceny ran decently, time of 4:32.23.
8th through 12th were...
Emily Lipari in 4:35.24.
Amanda Winslow, slowing quite a bit from her 4:26, down to 4:35.58
Lauren Penney in 4:35.71.
Rachel Schneider in 4:36.42.
And Cory McGee in 4:37.32.

That 6th placer?
None other than the second fastest EVER High School girl in history--indoors or outdoors--Alexa Efraimson!
She ran a great time of 4:32.15, moving her to within 8.04 seconds of Mary Cain!!
I don't have the 1500 splits yet, but she most likely PR'd there too, which makes her easily # 2 on the Indoor list!
She probably ran around 4:14.5 to 4:15.5.
I hope to have the 1500 times soon.
(ADDED 1 day later--Official 1500 splits are now known.  Efraimson's 1500 was 4:15.65, which makes her # 2 A-T Indoors.  Ir's also 0.35 faster than her outdoor PR of 4:16.00.  Also, Cain's 1500 was 4:11.56.  Compare this to her 4:11.72 from last year's Millrose, when her mile time was 4:28.25.  This made her 2014 finish--final 109 meters--16.17, as compared to "just" 16.53 in 2013!!  Efraimson's last 109 meters was comparable, it being 16.50!!  In Cain's 4:32.78 from 2013, she split 16.67 for her last 109 meters.  And in her 4:24.11, she ran "only" 17.48!!)

The pace was slower than expected.
But Cain said in a post-race interview that she wanted to practice running in a pack, rather than gunning for the American Record!
Disappointing to those who were hoping to see ANOTHER Cain record, but it made the RACE more exciting (and suspenseful!) to watch!
The pack, with Cain near the front, hit 440 yards in 71, 880 in 2:19, then 1320 in 3:27.
Cain sprinted (or cruised??!!) the last 400 in 60 seconds!

And she WON!
Without being labeled the "youngest"!!
That honor went to a girl named Alexa.

I'm going to end this post now.
But there's still more to report from the Millrose meet, as well as many other notable marks, mostly from the Collegiate and High School categories.
I'll do a second post ASAP...probably later this evening.
Watch for it!

Boston's a tough act to follow, but.......

The New Balance Boston Indoor was so good, it filled up a whole post!
(Oh, I could've stuffed all this other material in there, but I have great sympathy for your tired eyes, so chose to do a 2nd post, to make it a bit easier to read.)

Seems the American Women's 1 Mile list is getting a solid reworking at the top of it!
First, there was Mary Cain's 4:24.11, run in Boston (Natch!), but at BU, not at the Reggie Lewis Center!
Then there was Kim Conley's somewhat surprising 4:24.54, run at The Armory.
And now there's Amanda Winslow.
She ran 4:26.28 at BU to win by 5 seconds (from Nicole Schappert), her time placing her 6th A-T US Indoors, and # 23 on the World Indoor list!
Her time would have been # 1 in the World in 2013, but this year, it's # 3....so far!
(The pacer was Kate Grace!)

Two other good marks happened at that BU meet.

Arkansas's Women's DMR team ran the 5th best A-T Indoor Collegiate mark with their 10:57.15.
I'm just now compiling my relay lists, indoors and out., so there MIGHT be a correction needed on this!
I'm doing the list by school, not performances!
In other words, just ONE time for each school!
(Or Nation, on the World lists!)
More details on my new Relay lists in another post.....but not sure when!)

Then, Emily Sisson and Laura Nagel ran the 2 fastest 3000's of the year for collegians.
Sisson won with 9:00.76, and is now 13th A-T Indoors on the Collegiate list!
(Just ahead of.....Abbey D'Agostino!!!)
Nagel ran 9:01.35, for 17th A-T Collegiate!

The HJ continues to be a VERY sexy event!!
(No, nobody HJ'ed naked!!  LOL)
Ivan Ukhov again jumped very high, almost matching his PR of 7-10.75.
He reached 7-10.50.
So did....in the same meet (!!)...Aleksey Dmitrik.
Dmitrik's mark ties him (with Carlos Thranhardt's mark from 1987!!) for the Age 29 record!
It also moves him from a tie at 22nd (with 7 others) on the World Indoor list to a tie (with 2 others!) at 5th A-T World!

Lalond Gordon ran the 400 in 45.17, putting him 12th A-T in the World.

Duke's Megan Clark PV'ed 14-3.50 to move into a 4-way tie at 18th on the Indoor Collegiate list!

WT'er Michael Lihrman zipped from 20th to 16th on the Indoor Collegiate list with his 75-4.

I don't keep records for the 500 (or 300), but I did notice one mark that caught my eye.
Decathlete Curtis Beach, maybe the fastest 800-1500 runner among Decathletes, won a college 500 with a fast 1:10.50 at the Armory!

Finally, in the HS category, a few marks to report.
As noted above, I don't keep 300 records, and just began compiling marks for the 600.
But a couple of marks stand out.
Olivia Baker ran 1:30.58 for 11th A'T HS Indoors.
And Zyaire Clemens ran 300 in 33.50 for # 7 A-T HS.

The Blacksburg (VA) boys 4X800 squad ran 7:44.52, the 11th best school indoors, according to Jack Shepard's HS Track Annual!

John Warren PR'ed by 5.75 inches in the TJ, to 51-3, to move from 18th to 16th on the HS list.

And Adam Kelly crushed his old PR by 32.5 inches (!!) in the WT, his 78-6.50 moving him from 17th to 12th on the A-T HS list!!

Finally, here's one about....an 8th grader!
Her name--Remember it!!--is Gabrielle Wilkinson, and she's from Pennsylvania.
She won the HS 1000 at the Armory in 2:51.71.
Why is her mark so...remarkable?
And why should you remember her name?

Because next year she goes into the 9th grade.
The HS 9th grade record is 2:50.84, set in 2011.
Need I say more?

That Class Record is held by......Mary Cain!!

She said, in an interview, that this was her 1st 1000, and that her 800 PR is 2:10!

Next week is Millrose!
Another records blitz??

Mary Cain leads Boston Record Party

What an incredible meet!
And maybe at least in part....a BIG part!.....for what happened to 2 key players!
But we'll get to that in a minute (or an hour?), as there's LOTS of tales to tell!

Mary Cain.
A name that has come to mean two things: FAST and RECORDS!
(Also a charming, funny, intelligent girl with a personality to kill for!)

Cain beat a class field of mostly American runners, her time of 2:35.80 crushing her days-old Age 17 record by a whopping 3.45 seconds.
(She needs to get into the "professionals" habit of breaking records by maybe TENTHS of a second, so as to make more money from her efforts!  LOL)

The time inches her onto the A-T World Indoor list for 1000 meters at 23rd place!
She fell short of the AR, but is now 3rd on the US Indoor list!
This moves her from 8th to 3rd on that list!
It's the fastest Indoor 1000 run by any woman under Age 21.
No Meet Record, however, as Regina Jacobs's 2:35.29 (# 2 A-T US) was run in this meet in 2000.

Now for the Big Question.
Does Mary get the HSR (and the Grade 12  record)?
Some are saying NO, as she's a pro.
Some are saying YES, as she's still a HS student in Bronxville NY.
I'll side with the YES folks....until or unless EVERYONE says otherwise!
Thus, the HSR remains in Cain's hands, as does the 12th grade record!

This race produced several other good marks.
Chanelle Price took 2nd in 2:36.63.
She moves from 13th on the A-T US list down to 4th.
Right behind her was Sarah Brown, whose 2:36.90 gives her 5th on the US list.
Comebacking Molly Beckwith ran a solid 2:37.19, for 6th A-T US!!
Treniere Moser, Cain's teammate, was leading the race until Cain's kick overpowered her (and the rest!).
But she held on to run 2:37.88, merely 8th on the US list.
She moves up 2 spots from 10th.
And Heather Kampf ran 2:40.90, for 18th A-T US!

A quality field....and 17 year old Mary Cain beat them all!

A men's race had similar depth for its deep American squad.
The 3000 was won by Hagos Gebrhiwet in 7:34.13, with Dejen Gebrmeskel in 2nd with 7:34.70
No records set by them, but a great race nonetheless.
However, behind them were several Americans who invaded the record book with alacrity!!

Sprinting hard, but barely missing catching Gebrmeskel, was Ryan Hill.
His 7:34.87 is now 3rd A-T US Indoors!
Then came Garrett Heath, whose 7:37.40 is now 4th US!
His time moves him from 18th to his 4th place position!
The parade continued with Andrew Bumbalough's 7:37.62, moving him from 8th to 5th on the US list!

I should mention here the sad fate of Canadian NOP member Cam Levins.
With 5 laps to go, he lost a shoe!
Yet, with just one shoe on, he finished in 7:41.59, a near Canadian record!
Kevin Sullivan, who holds that record with his 2007 mark of 7:40.17, tweeted Cam that an asterisk should be put by his mark, indicating HE did it with TWO shoes!!

Behind Levins was Will Leer, whose 7:42.95 makes him 15th All-Time US Indoors!
Finally, Hassan Mead's 7:44.88 places him 19th A-T US!

Three races were run that are rarely run at the pro (or any!) level, indoors or out!
Guess we'll start with the one that set a new Indoor WR!
Yep, I mean the Men's 4X800 Relay!
That one that Nick Symmonds has been trash-talking for the past umpteen weeks!!
Well, Nick will have to ask for a re-match!

His Brooks Beasts squad took....3rd!
Winning, with the WR time of 7:13.11 was the US All-Stars team, led by Duane Solomon!
Second was the NJ/NY Blue team, whose 7:13.22 is now # 2 A-T Indoors!
It's also a Meet Record, as the previous best, 7:13.94 by Team Global, was set at this meet in 2000!!

The Women's 2000 was, like the Men's 3K, very deep for the Americans.
In fact, it was new 4:24.54 miler Kim Conley who won!
Her time of 5:41.10, a Meet Record, is # 2 A-T USA (on a VERY short list!!), and # 17 A-T World!

She beat Emma Coburn by over 6 seconds, but that didn't prevent Coburn's 5:47.20 from getting her into 5th on the US list!
Lucy Van Dalen (NZ) was next at 5:47.62, but set no records.
Stephanie Garcia, the next American, reached 6th A-T US with her 5:48.25.
Then came Nicole Bush, her 5:49.29 giving her 7th A-T US
Then came Morgan Uceny's 5:49.97, giving her 9th US.
Finally, Heather Wilson's 5:50.35 gave her # 10 US!

Last but not least is the Women's 2 mile!
This was supposed to be a slam-dunk for Jenny Simpson to SHATTER the AR (Regina Jacobs's 9:23.38 from 2002)

BUT........
the "Lopez Lomong Syndrome" attacked her at about the 2800 mark!!
What's the "Lopez Lomong Syndrome" you ask?
Remember the Payton Jordan Stanford meet in 2012?
Lomong blasted a fierce "last lap" kick of 53 seconds....in the 11th lap of the 5K!
Stopping, he was told he had a lap to go!
He got going again, and finished with a 66 second REAL last lap, winning in 13:11.63.

Well, Jenny Simpson didn't have the same luck.
Thinking she'd beaten Sally Kipyego after kicking hard to nab her at the "tape", Simpson stopped.
Then looking bewildered, she started running again.
And finished 2nd to Kipyego, her 9:26.19 giving her 2nd  A-T US.
And 9th A-T World!!

Kipyego's winning 9:21.04 wasn't a Kenyan record, but it does place her 7th in the World!

Jordan Hasay is now the NOP team's fastest indoor 2 miler!
She beat Mary Cain's 9:38.68 (run in 2013) with a good 9:36.00.
Hasay is now 22md best-ever in the World Indoors, and 9th best US!!

It was quite a meet.
On a scale of 0-10, considering its achievement of records and high places on lists, I'd give it a 9.
It would've gone to 9.5 if not for Jenny's little arithmetic problem (LOL), and Cain's not kicking as hard as she thought she could (She said this in a post-race interview!), and one more "niggle"

That being Galen Rupp DNF'ing in the mile!
He appears to be okay, but he stopped with less than 400 to go because of a "sharp pain" in his foot.
But he was seen jogging afterward....with no limp or apparent serious injury!

This meet produced so many great marks, I'll have to do a separate post for all the rest of this week's material.
It will follow in the next hour or so!

Too spectacular to wait!

The Boston GP is supposed to be the BIG meet this week.
And it just might yet prove to be!
But the XL Galan meet in Stockholm produced a couple of times that were nothing short of SPECTACULAR!!
And yes, as the title of this post says, too spectacular to wait to report them!
So let's get after it!  (Thank you, Carrie Tollefson!)

Genzebe Dibaba is the younger sister of the Baby-Faced Destroyer, Tirunesh Dibaba.
Up until one week ago, that was primarily Genzabe's best known description.

Oh, she had produced some decent marks--3:57.77 and 8:26.95 among them.
But even those great times didn't prepare us for the EXPLOSION that took place in Karlsruhe last week, and in Stockholm today!
You already have all the details of her 3:55.17 1500.
(That is, if you read my post on it!)
Well, here's what she did today!

Genzebe Dibaba SHATTERED the Indoor World Record of fellow Ethiopian Meseret Defar (8:23.72 from 2007) by a mere 7.12 seconds with her time of 8:16.60.
Not only is this the new Indoor WR, but it's the ONLY sub-8:20 3K ever run.....unless you come from China!!

It's also (naturally!!) the new Ethiopian National Record.
And the new Age 22 record!!
(She turns 23 just 2 days from today, on February 8!!)

But that's not all!
She was officially timed enroute at 2000 meters in 5:34.25.
That's the 2nd fastest Indoor 2000 ever!!
It's faster than Mary Slaney's American record of 5:34.52.
And it's the new Ethiopian National Record for that distance, surpassing Defar's 5:34.74 from 2006!

She negative split the race, according to all reports.
Her approximate splits were 4:12 and 4:04 for each 1500.
Her final 1000 was 2:42.35.
Her last 400 was 64.90!

Also in Stockholm, Abeba Aregawi ran the 1500 in 3:57.91.
This HAD been planned as an assault on Yelena Soboleva's WR of 3:58.28.
However, someone named Dibaba spoiled those plans!
Instead, Aregawi gave it her all, and DID break Soboleva's mark (by 0.37).
But she's now # 2 A-T....behind Dibaba!
Still....a truly GREAT run!!

And she did get the Age 23 record for her effort.
And broke her own Swedish National record!

BTW, second to Genzebe was Helen Obiri, who ran a new Kenyan National Record time of 8:29.99!
This moves Obiri from 17th on the World Indoor list up to 9th!

Mohammed Aman didn't get a PR, but he ran a new Age 20 indoor record with his 1:45.08 800 in Stockholm.

Mariya Kuchina HJ'ed 6-7 today.
This moves her to 17th place on the World Indoor list, where she's tied with 6 others!!

In an outdoor meet in Cuba, 16 year old (!!) Lazaro Martinez smashed the Age 16 (and my book's 0-17) record in the TJ with his mark of 56-7!
This breaks, according to my records, the 0-17 mark of Will Claye (55-7 in 2009).
Claye was 17 at the time.
Ernesto Reve won the meet with his 57-5.

A couple of great American marks to report.

Keturah Orji  continues to impress.
Seems almost every time she jumps (TJ or LJ), she produces great marks.
At the Armory yesterday, she TJ'ed a tremendous 44-0.25.
This improved her indoor best from the 42-1.50 she'd opened her season with by almost two full feet!!
And it makes her # 2 A-T HS Indoors!
She'd been 11th with her season opener.
AND......her jump moves her to within 6 inches of reaching 24th place.....on the USA National Indoor list!!

Finally, Nick Lane set a Frosh Class (HS) record with his Weight Throw of 64-7.50.
This broke Ken Brinson's 2012 mark of 64-4.

Remember my blog about the 3 "missing" female runners?
Well, one of them was found!

Wesley Frazier appeared in the starting line-up of the 3000 in the Penn State meet.
But she didn't finish.
She seemed to be running well, following the pacer the first 2 or 3 laps of the 200 meter track.
Then she disappeared!
DNF'ed.
And she was NOT wearing the Duke uniform!!
So I still don't know what her status is.
Supposed to be the hottest frosh on the team, she ran just 1 XC race (in October), then didn't run anything until Penn State.

Is she ill?
Was she injured?
Is she redshirting?
Did she leave the team for some reason?
The mystery deepens!

In anticipation of their upcoming races, I must mention a workout Mary Cain and Jordan Hasay did AFTER their mile races where they ran 4:24.11 and 4:28.37, respectively.

They jogged over to Harvard's indoor track, where they proceeded to do the following:

Hasay ran a 4 mile (!) tempo in about 21:50.
Cain jumped in after Hasay's 1st mile, and ran 16:23 for her 3 miles.
Then they did some speed work.
A 600 in 1:46.
A 400 in 62.4
300 in 43.6.
And a 200 in 27.4.

Jordan is preparing for the 2 mile in the Millrose meet.
Cain is readying for the 1000 in the Boston GP, then the 1 mile at Millrose!

More.....and I'm sure it will be MUCH MUCH more......after the Boston meet on Saturday!

10 more marks worth a post

If you read my last post, I said that if I found more marks worth a new post, I'd do one.
While none of the following are anywhere near what Genzabe Dibaba did, these marks DO make inroads into my T&F Record Book.
(Besides, I want to clear the deck before the Boston meet this Saturday!  That should produce a massive amount of revisions to my book!  Not to mention all else happening this week!)

Deon Lendore ran the fastest 400 of the year--45.47--but since he's already on the Collegiate Indoor DDD with a better time, he remains where he is!

But 2nd in that race was Arman Hall, whose 45.63 moves the freshman onto the list into 19th place!

Stanford senior Justine Fredronic ran a good 2:03.25 at Penn State to hop onto the Collegiate list in 15th place!
She also ran the anchor 1600 leg on Stanford's 10:54.07 DMR.
BTW, that mark ranks them 3rd on the A-T DMR list!!
I'm still putting that list together.
The list will be of schools, not performances!
Meaning, only the best time by a school will make the list!
Same with my other relay lists.....only one time per school!
(More on my relay lists in a later post!)

Emily Grove vaulted 14-3.25 to move into a 5-way tie at 20th on the Collegiate PV list!

Even better, a redshirting Sandi Morris PV'ed 14-9.
She wants to compete in her 5th year (in 2015), so she's a redshirt from Arkansas.
While not allowable for the Collegiate list, it does move her from a 4-way tie at 18th to a 3-way tie at 15th on the USA list!!

On the international front, the Collegiate Record holder, Tina Sutej (14-11 in 2012), now a pro, vaulted a PR of 15-5.25 in the Russian Winter meet to move into a tie (with 1 other) at 15th on the World Indoor list!

Remember when I said Bernard Lagat got his 1st Age 39 record with his 7:49.83 3000 in the Glasgow meet?
Well, he kind of destroyed that mark with his 7:38.51 non-winning time in the Karlsruhe meet!
How many more Age 39 records will he get this year, indoors and out?

Three WT'ers threw further to move onto, or improve their place on one WT list or another.

That dude with the unspellable name--Chukwuebuke Enekwechi--threw the weight 77-6 to move from 11th to 9th on the Collegiate list!
Adam Kelly threw 75-9.75, which moves him up 1 place on the HS list, from 18th to 17th!
It was a 4 inch improvement for him!
And Kayla Padgett's throw of 72 feet, one quarter inch moves her onto the Collegiate list in 20th place!

The next 2 weeks--and really, the rest of the season!!--should be HOT!
This week is Boston, and next week is Millrose.
AND....Galen Rupp's attempt on the 1 mile WR!!
(This race at BU was pushed back 1 week to give Rupp more time to prepare!!)

See you soon!

Oops!
Forgot one of the best 600 races ever!
Happened at the Russian Winter meet.

I'm still compiling my 600 lists, so the following might NOT all be correct.
Still, it's worth reporting!

Mohammed Aman won the race with a time of 1:15.31, which is 2nd A-T on the World list, and the Age 20 record!
Adam Kszczot ran 1:15.75, making him 4th A-T World, and the new Age 24 record holder.
Abdulraman Balla ran 1:15.83, moving him into 7th on the World DDD.
And Stepan Poistogov ran 1:16.08, making him 11th A-T World, and the Age 27 record holder!

If corrections are needed, I'll include them in a later post.

BULLETIN:
Galen Rupp switches to Boston mile!
Presumably, this cancels his WR attempt at BU the following week!
Salazar & Rupp determined this would better fit his preparation for USATF and WIC!!

3:55.17.....Unexpected & Unbelievable

With no warning, Genzebe Dibaba rewrote the history books in just 3:55.17 seconds time!
In the Karlsruhe meet, Dibaba (younger sister of Tirunesh) destroyed the Indoor 1500 record with a (Please, I need some new adjectives here!!) time of 3:55.17.

There are many ways to look at this.

1. If she continued through a mile, she'd almost certainly break the OUTdoor record of 4:12.56, with a time of about 4:11.50 or 4:12.00!
2. She broke Yelena Soboleva's 2006 mark of 3:58.28 by 3.11 seconds.  As I've noted before, 1500/mile records aren't broken by 3 full seconds in one race!!  But Genzebe did!
3. It's a new Ethiopian National record (of course!) and an Age 22 record (obviously!)  BTW, she turns 23 just 1 week from today!
4. She improved her indoor PR of 4:00.13 by 4.96 seconds, moving up my World DDD list from 6th to 1st!!
5. She now leads the 2014 list by a mere 10.53 seconds!  (She won the race by about 13 seconds!!)

Renaud Lavillenie continues to own the PV!
He went over the bar set at 19-11.25, a mark attained only by Sergey Bubka!
But guess what?!
He does NOT get the Age 27 Indoor record!
You guessed it.
Bubka jumped 20-1 at that age!
He does improve his French National record!

Other than those 2 marks, it seems to have been a quiet weekend.
But I've got a few marks to report.

Keturah Orji TJ'ed a good 42-1.50 in her first TJ of the season.
It moves her onto the Indoor HS DDD list at 11th place.
With an outdoor mark just shy of 45 feet, she's bound (pardon the pun!) to move WAY up this list by March.

Another HS'er, 11th grader Alexa Efraimson, made news...in TWO ways!
One, it was announced that Mary Cain has moved from the 800 to the mile in the Millrose meet
This brought the announcement that Efraimson will run the Millrose mile also!
While I doubt Efraimson can beat Cain, this will be the first race since 2012 where Cain has faced another HS'er!
I'll predict Alexa can run 4:30 to 4:32.
But Cain might try again for Mary Slaney's 4:20.5 AR!!

And two, Efraimson just ran 3000 meters in 9:00.16 for 3rd in a race against pro's and collegians.
This is faster than Cain has run.
One tiny problem, however!
It was run on Seattle's 307 meter OT!!
Does NOT count!!
(However, in that alien world of OT's it IS the fastest HS time ever!!)

That Icelandic youngster (Well, she's now 18!), Anita Hinriksdottir, ran a 1500 in 4:19.
Normally an 800 girl, she ran like an 800 girl, sprinting to the lead from the gun, then even LAPPING 1 or 2 runners on the 200 meter track!
She'll be racing Ajee Wilson and Natoya Goule in that Millrose 800.
(As noted, Mary Cain won't be in the 800!)

At the Penn State meet, a couple of college teams ran good DMR's
Heck, they ran VERY good DMR's!
Stanford's women ran 10:54.07, the 2nd fastest time ever indoors by a College team!
(I'm working on my Relay lists, so I might have to add a correction later!)
Penn State's men ran 9:26.59.
And these were run on a 200 meter track!
Dartmouth finished well back, but Abbey D'Agostino ran a strong 4:32 split.

It's likely this weekend wasn't as "quiet" as I said.
I don't have ALL the results in yet from Karlsruhe, or the many collegiate and high school meets.
But I guarantee that I'll do another post...if necessary!

Oh yes.
Nick Symmonds won that much-hyped JDL Camel City 800 race today.
Time of 1:48.64.

And Lauren Fleshman started her post-baby comeback with a Seattle mile win in 4:42.77.
(She doubled back in that Alexa Efraimson 3K, but it was just a workout.)
