Where is she?

This is an "extra" post.
No big news to report.
I'm just curious about where 3 female runners have disappeared to, and why they SEEM to not be running.

Missing in action this year have been...

Natosha Rogers
Cayla Hatton
Wesley Frazier.

If you're not familiar with these girls, here's a bit of info on them.

Natosha won the NCAA 10000 in 2012 in 32:41.
This was just her 3rd (or 4th?) 10K....ever!
She'd been a 16:25 5K runner in 2011, and in her 1st 10K, ran over 34 minutes.
Then (I believe) she hit in the 33's.
Then, as noted, WON the NCAA race!
This was followed by ANOTHER 42 second improvement, down to 31:59 in the Olympic Trials.
She finished 2nd, but failed to run the needed "A" qualifying time of 31:45, so didn't go to London.

Then she pretty much disappeared.
She said she needed to take a break from running, and wasn't sure when she'd be back.
Haven't heard anything from her in about a year!

Cayla ran the 2nd fastest HS 10K in history, 33:17.28, in a mixed race in a small college meet in the spring of 2012.
Then she ran the 5K in the World Junior Championships that summer--the same meet where Mary Cain ran her breakthrough 4:11.01 1500--in 15:50, then 2nd best A-T!!  (Cain has since become # 1 with her 15:45 last year, pushing Hatton down to 3rd!)

She started at Stanford, and was listed on the team roster, but she never raced.
Then word came she left the team....
or left Stanford.
Not sure which....or if it was both!
Haven't heard anything about her in the past year either!

Then there's Frazier.
An amazing talent, she tripled at last summer's NBN, winning the 5000 (15:55), the 2 mile (10:12), and the 1 mile (4:39) on consecutive days!
Earlier, indoors, she inched past Erin Finn to set the HSR for the 5K at the NB Indoor meet!!

She ran quite well in Duke's first CC meet, finishing 4th, if I remember correctly.
She seemed set to be one of the BIG stars of CC and track, not just for Duke, but in the entire country!!
Then word came that she got sick....as did several Duke runners!
She's apparently healthy, as I've seen photos of her smiling widely with friends on Twitter.
But......she has yet to be in any results.
Been checking all the Duke meets, and she hasn't run....despite still being listed on the team roster.
(And not as a redshirt!)

So why aren't these super talented young runners......running?
Or if they're running, why aren't they competing??

Does anyone have any "inside" information on these three?

One or two more items.
I made a HUGE error in my blog about the two women's mile races.
Abbey D'Agostino did NOT break the Senior Class record for the mile!!
I'd forgotten to list the Collegiate Record Holder--Jenny (Barringer) Simpson--as the Senior Class record holder....which she obviously would be, as she holds the CR!!
Abbey DID break the 1500 CR, as stated!!
Sorry for the error!

I'll return later this week with my next full report on 2014's indoor action!

In other news.......

With my recent posts on the Marathon and the (US Women's) Mile, you'd think T&F was limited to that!
Not on THIS blog!
I cover Track AND Field....indoors and out, men and women.
But you gotta admit, the Dubai Marathon and those 2 Women's Mile races I wrote about recently DID provide a lot of meat for the grinder, so to speak.

Anyway, time's-a-wasting, so as one of my favorite people, Carrie Tollefson, says (to end her brilliant videos at "C Tolle Run.com"), "Let's get after it!".

Galen Rupp broke the American Indoor 2 Mile record last night!
Perfectly paced (at WORLD Record pace!!) for over 2000 meters, Rupp slowed a bit over the final 400, but still broke Bernard Lagat's AR of 8:09.49 with his time of 8:07.41.
This rates 6th A-T in the World.
His previous best of 8:09.72 ranked him # 12, so he moves up 6 spots!
His enroute 3000 time was 7:34.68.
Rupp just missed the Age 27 best of Eliud Kipchoge (8:07.39) by 0.02 seconds!!

I must ask a question here....in a question-statement sort of way!
Bethwell Birgen was the main pacer, and he stayed in the race through 3000 (though the latter part NOT as pacer!), then DNF'ed!!
Why?
His time at 3000 was recorded as 7:37.17, just 2.49 seconds behind Rupp!
He was thus just 218 meters from finishing the full 2 miles!
His time, even if he just cruised it, would have been around 8:12....a VERY good 2 mile time!
8:12.00 would have made him 14th A-T in the World!!
(He didn't appear wasted when he stopped....he just stopped!)
A waste of a great effort, IMHO!!

Onward!!

University of Georgia freshman, Kendell Williams, who broke the HSR with her 4068 Pentathlon score at 2013's NBN Indoor, improved that score by a whopping 234 points with her 4302 winning score this weekend.
I'm in the process of adding the Collegiate Indoor Multi's to my book, so I apologize for not having the data needed to say HOW great her mark is.
But I'm pretty sure it's VERY close to being the Frosh record for Collegians!
AND probably will make my Top 24 Collegiate list!
I'll let you know ASAP!
Here's how she improved her score over her HSR:

4068:  8:43 (60H)   5-11.50 (HJ)   34-10.50 (SP)   19-0.50  (LJ)   2:31.63  (800)
4302:  8.40             5-11.25           36-9.50             20-6.25           2:26.64

Another event I'm only now making a part of my book, the Indoor 600, had a good race yesterday, but again, I don't have all the necessary data yet to tell you HOW good it was!
Duane Solomon beat Eric Sowinski, 1:16.67 to 1:16.78!

Renaud Lavillenie broke his own French National Record (from 2011) by one-half inch, to 19-9.75.
He remains in 3rd place A-T World!

High School Senior Keturah Orji LJ'ed a great 20-8.75 to move to # 5 A-T HS Indoor!!
Now here's the great part of the story!
This was in the prelims!!
She never competed in the final at The Armory, as she was so involved watching Olympian Will Claye TJ, she forgot all about her own event!!
But the mark counts, and so she's now 5th best-ever indoors!!
(Her best event is......the Triple Jump!!)

The Grand Old Man of the sport, Bernard Lagat, got his first Age 39 record in the big meet in Glasgow.
He now is the fastest indoors at that age in the 3000, his time being a modest 7:49.83.
He outsprinted 28 year old Brit Andy Vernon (7:50.10) for the win!

Another old man (LOL), Chris Brown of Great Britain, ran 400 in 45.93 for the Age 35 record!

Gwen Berry threw the WT 80-0.25 for the Age 24 record!
That also moves her up the A-T World list from 9th to 3rd!!
(She also moves from 7th to 3rd on the US DDD list!)
As I've said before, the WT is NOT thrown by many outside the United States, but 80 feet is still a GREAT throw!!

Two other WT'ers  had good marks.
Michael Lihrman's throw of 74-7.75 makes him 20th A-T Collegian.
Antonio James moved to 21st A-T Collegian with his 74-7.25.

Garrett Heath finished 2nd (to Brit Lee Emmanuel's 3:54.30), but his indoor PR of 3:54.59 moves him from 18th A-T USA up to 12th!
His previous best was 3:55.24 from 2012.

Kendra Harrison sprinted the 60H in 7.96 to move into a two-way tie at 11th A-T Collegian!

Chanelle Price ran an indoor PR of 2:01.91 in Glasgow, making her 23rd All Time American.
However, she lost the race to 20 year old Brit Laura Muir, who ran a good 2:00.95.
BTW, Price moved Delisa Walton OFF the list, thus removing another "ancient" mark, Walton running her time in 1980!

Nick Ross HJ'ed 7-7, moving him from a tie at 14th A-T Collegian (with 11 others!!) into a tie at 9th (this time with just 5 others!!).

Finally, Laura Roesler ran an 800 which I hesitate to even give voice to!
Why?
After all, Laura is a very beautiful and very fast gal at Oregon, and her time of 2:01.32 is # 2 A-T Indoors among Collegians!
But it's NOT!!!

Huh?

You see, she ran this FANTASTIC time on an OT measuring 290 meters around!
It doesn't count!
It does NOT make her 2nd A-T Collegian indoors!
And it is NOT an Indoor PR by one full second!!
Sorry, Laura, but next time you run 2:01.32 indoors, make sure it's on a 200 meter track!!

One other sorrowful note, though of a different nature.

Brenda Martinez announced she will NOT race the 1000 in Boston on February 8th, due to loss of some training because of an illness.
She's apparently okay now, but she said she lost too much training to run a good race!
Hurry back, Brenda!

America's Woman Milers Go Wild!

This could be all about Mary Cain, but something came down from the stratosphere and attacked America's female milers.
Just in the past 24 hours, the record books containing USA Women's Indoor Mile records and lists suddenly went WILD!!
Here are the (partial) results of the 2 races--the AR attempt by Cain and the NOP team at BU yesterday, and the elite women's race at the NB meet at the Armory today:

Boston
1. Mary Cain               4:24.11  (4:06.63 at 1500 enroute)
2. Abbey D'Agostino   4:28.31  (4:09.77)
3. Jordan Hasay           4:28.37  (4:08.66)

New York
1. Kim Conley              4:24.54  (Got her 1500 split late. It was 4:05.70!  4th A-T US!  But slower
2. Nicole Sifuentes (Can)4:29.40             final 109m than Cain's--18.84 to Cain's 17.48!)
3. Sarah Brown             4:29.62
4. Heather Kampf         4:30.14
5. Morgan Uceny         4:30.57

Soooo much to report....so let's get started!
(I'll do this race by race, and within each race, person by person, followed by a wrap-up!)

Mary Cain shattered her own HSR by 4.14 seconds.
She seems to like taking huge chunks of time off her mile/1500 records, which is ALSO probably a record!  LOL
She destroyed the 12th Grade record of Lynn Jennings (4:39.0 from 1978!) by 14.89 seconds!!
Last year's 4:28.25 was run at Age 16.
But in my T&F Record Book, my Age Records begin at 17, and that age is labled as "0-17", meaning the person could be ANY age up to and including Age 17!!
So Cain's new mark broke the "Age 0-17" mark in my book......AGAIN!!
However, it did NOT get the much-vaunted WJR of Kalkedan Gezahegn (Ethiopia), the 4:24.10 she ran in 2010.
Gezahegn's mark was run at Age 18, so Cain DOES get the Age 17 record, as stated!
Cain's 4:24.11 ties her with Yelena Zadorezhnaya in 13th place on the World Indoor list!
It moves her to 3rd A-T USA!!
She was in 6th A-T USA!

And this only speaks of her MILE record!
Her 1500 time of 4:06.63 is just as impressive!
It's of course a new HSR, smashing her own mark from 2013, her enroute time of 4:11.72, by a mere 5.09 seconds!
As well, it destroys another Lynn Jennings standard (her 4:18.9 from 1978 being the 12th Grade record!)), by 12.27 seconds!!
Her 1500 time doesn't make the World DDD--it's 3.10 seconds short of 24th place--but it does place her 4th A-T in the United States, behind Regina Jacobs, Mary Slaney, and Morgan Uceny.
Heady company, indeed, for a HS kid not yet old enough to vote!!

Now for the others!

Abbey D, as people affectionately call this speedy beauty, is still in college (Dartmouth).
So her 4:28.31, which just edged Jordan Hasay at the finish, ties her (with Vicki Huber) for 3rd A-T Collegian!
It also ties Huber for the Senior Class record for Collegians!
NOTE (added January 27): Huge error...by me!!  Jenny Barringer (Simpson) was a senior when she set the CR of 4:25.91 in 2009!  Thus, SHE holds that class record!!!  Sorry, Abbey.....and everyone!!
Better yet, her 1500 time of 4:09.77 breaks the CR of Tina Krebs (4:10.20 in 1991) by 0.43 seconds!
She's now tied (with Huber) for 8th A-T USA in the mile.
Her 1500 split is now 15th A-T USA!!

Jordan improved her PR by 4.64 seconds, down to 4:28.37.
She's now 10th A-T in the United States indoors!
Her 1500 of 4:08.66 is a new PR for her, both indoors AND out!!
It's her first time under 4:10!
She's also now 10th A-T USA in the 1500
If you're wondering why Hasay is faster at 1500, but slower in the mile, than Abbey D, it's because she tied up in the final 109 meters, and Abbey was able to pass her at the tape!

New York
Kim Conley basically ran her own race, leaving the loaded NB field behind about halfway through.
She ALMOST beat Cain's mark, but without competition, fell just short (by 0.43 seconds!).
Makes you wonder what would have happened if the two races had been ONE race!!
Conley's 4:24.54 misses the Age 27 record by a sliver--0.01 seconds!!
She's now 18th A-T World.
And she's now 4th A-T in the US!
Right behind Mary Cain!!

Sarah (Bowman) Brown's time of 4:29.62 is a PR.....by 0.10 seconds!!
Her old PR was run in 2009!
She's now 15th A-T US...slipping in ahead of the renowned Suzy Favor Hamilton!!
It's a bit weird, but because of these two races, Sarah moves DOWN the A-T US list in the indoor mile!!
She WAS 14th.....just 24 hours ago!!
And this DESPITE getting a PR!!

Heather Kampf, (once Heather Dornidan!) has been winning road miles all over the world recently!!
This time, she ran one on an indoor track.
She didn't win, but her 4:30.14 gives her 21st place on the US DDD indoor list!

As for Morgan Uceny, it was just poor timing!
Even if her TIME was pretty good for this (hopefully) comebacking American superstar!
Her 4:30.57 is now...25th.....on my Top 24 DDD list!!
(If these races were reversed in time--if the NY race was run BEFORE the Boston race, Uceny would've been ON the list......for a day!!
Ironically, moved OFF the mile list was Anna Willard, who happens to be a teammate of Uceny's!!

One more Cain trivia item before I end this.
She now owns TEN  High School Class Records indoors.....over various distances!!

The Marathon

With this weekend (hopefully) set to produce a slough of great marks, I've decided to have a separate post to cover the results of the Dubai Marathon, just completed.

Only one mark--the winner, Tsegaye Mekonnen Asefa's time of 2:04:32--made my T&F Record Book.
And he did so in a BIG way!

Asefa's time broke the Age 18 record by 1 minute and 35 seconds!!
In fact, it's the fastest time by anyone under the age of 21!

He also moves into 12th place on the World list.
Removed from the list (Top 24) was an icon--Paul Tergat, with his former WR of 2:04:55 from 2003!!

With Tergat's removal, all 24 on the list ran their times from 2008 on.
This is truly a tsunamic sweep of old marks off of, and new marks onto, my World DDD!
Only "new" events, such as the women's steeplechase, pole vault, and javelin (because of the change in the implement itself!) have seen such massive alterations.
Here's some interesting stats from my World and USA DDD's for both men and women.

Men--World DDD

Besides the 1 new mark from 2014.....
9 are from 2013
7 are from 2012
4 come from 2011
2 from 2009
and 1 from 2008!!
(NOTE: My DDD's include Boston course marks!!)

Now check out the difference in the United States DDD for men!

First, not even the Boston course AR of Ryan Hall (2:04:58) makes the World list!
Just 6 marks come from 2002 on.
Three are from the 90's.
13 are from the 1980's!!
And two, Jeff Wells's 2:10:15 from 1978, and the iconic Bill Rodger's PR of 2:09:27 from 1979, are from the 70's!!
(Frank Shorter, two-time Olympian, just misses the list!!)

There are too many reasons why this is.
But I believe that if some of the sub-28:00 10K guys would run one (Like Meb & Ritz have!), we would see a bunch of 21st century guys crack that list!!
And I'm talking about the USA list.....NOT the World list!
Those dudes are too far ahead for US guys to even THINK about invading their territory!!

Now for the women.

There are currently 25 women on my World DDD--because there is a two-way tie at 24th place!
Eighteen women have broken 2:20:00.
Just 5 have cracked 2:19:00.
And only the WR holder, Paula Radcliffe, has broken 2:18:00!!

The oldest mark is Tegla Loroupe's 2:20:43, run in 1999, and it's tied at 24th place with 1 other.
So it's almost certain to be OFF this list by the end of the London race!

Just 1 mark is from 2013
9 come from 2012.
Two come from 2011.
There is one mark from 2008.
And the remaining 11 marks come from the years 2001-2006.

Incredibly enough, the USA women have done better than the USA men in this century!
MUCH better!!!

Thirteen marks on the USA Top 24 hail from this century!!
And 11 remain from the previous century.

The oldest mark is Patti Catalano's 2:27:51 from 1981.
It ranks 13th A-T USA.
There are 14 US women under 2:28:00.
But just 4 have gone faster than 2:25:00!!

I'll say the same thing about the women as I said about the men.
I wish more sub-32:00 10K women would run a serious marathon!
Also, as with the men, I doubt US women are going to make much inroads on the World DDD list any time soon!!

The marathon has been revolutionized!
But US men and women are still recruiting troops and gathering weapons!!

Be back with a blog (or two??) in the next couple of days!
Can Mary Cain break the American Indoor Mile Record??

Come back here for all the details!!

Indoor Season shows signs of Awakening

Title of post notwithstanding, this weekend's marks show the 2014 Indoor season definitely picking up the pace....but not quite at full speed!!
(Tell that to Galen Rupp, Mary Cain, Ivan Ukhov and others who have already produced Championship-level results!!)
But before I get to all the marks, I need to "rant" a bit.
(Newspapers and magazines call it "editorializing"!  LOL)

On Oversize Tracks (OT's)

I don't like them.
(How's THAT for a definitive statement?!)
Why don't I like them?
Well, let's call it a "love/hate" affair.
They're great if you want to run fast indoors.
There's several of them across the USA, so you probably live near one.
And they hold LOTS of meets!

That's the "love" part.

Now here's why I "hate" them!

As all you 1000's of readers of my blog know (LOL), I am (and this blog is) all about records, marks, and lists.
It's a highly specialized blog.

In that context, I must insist on having "legitimate" marks to work with.
And indoor times (in events longer than 60 meters!) need to be run on 200 meter tracks in order to be termed "legitimate".

Look at T&FN's lists on their website.
Look at the A-T or Yearly lists in Jack Shepard's wonderful HS Track Annual.
Look in pretty much ALL T&F record books!

OT marks are listed SEPARATELY from 200 meter track marks indoors.
I've often compared OT marks to outdoor wind-aided marks.
In this way:

They are listed separately from non-wind-aided marks!
They are NEVER mixed together.
Nor are they allowable for record purposes!!

Same goes for OT times!!
And I will end this "editorial" (LOL), and begin my report with a time that perfectly illustrates my point (if I do say so myself!).

Sophie Cantine, a freshman high schooler from WA, ran a FANTASTIC 1000 meters at the Washington Preview meet on Seattle's 307 meter oval.
She ran in the "fast" heat, the one with all collegians (except for her!)...and some pretty good ones.
(Amy Weissenbach!!)
She finished 5th, and beat some "name" runners, Cami Chapus and Amy Eloise-Neale!
Her time was 2:47.64!
That time would be a Frosh Class record...beating the now-legendary Mary Cain's Frosh Class record by 3.20 seconds!
She also came within 0.35 seconds of Cain's SOPH Class record of 2:47.29!
Not only that, her time would rank 9th All Time Indoors!!!

BUT.....
it was run on Seattle's OT!!
No records.
No placing on any lists.

Hopefully, the young (15??) Ms Cantine will run that fast on a 200 meter track before season's end!!

Now on to other marks!

Hannah Cunliffe, another Washington stater, ran a 60 in 7.35, just missing getting on my DDD (Top 24 Performers) list for HS Indoor.
You need to run 7.34 to make it!

Desiree Freier PV'ed a great early season 13-7.
That WOULD make my list, except she's already on it!
She DOES move up 2 places, however, into a tie with one other at 8th place, with her 1-inch indoor mark improvement.
(She has a 13-9 outdoor PR from last year!)

Two lady PV'ers DO move onto my list.
Alexis Romero and Greta Wagner vaulted 13-2.25 to move into a 2-way tie at 21st place on the Indoor HS list!

SIX (6!!) Weight Throwers made inroads on the A-T lists!!
They are:
Dani Bunch (Moves from 24th to 11th A-T Collegian with her throw of 73-4.  Also becomes # 17 A-T World!  And  14th All Time in the United States!!)
Enukwechi Chukwuebaka (WHEW!!!!  LOL) He threw 76-5.75, moving him to # 11 A-T Collegian.  He's a soph at Purdue.)
IMPORTANT NOTE (Added hours after this was posted.): This guy's mark (Won't try to spell his name again!!  LOL) broke the Soph Class record for Collegians.  The previous mark was Chris Epalle's 74-7 from 1991.
Brittany Funk (Her 71-5.25 WT moves her into 24th place on the Collegiate DDD.)
Daniel Haugh (This Georgia HS'er tossed the weight 78-5, a season leader, and he's now a solid 12th A-T!)
Kamryn Brinson  (Threw the weight 56-3, just edging onto my list in 24th.)
Gabby Figueroa (Already on the list, with her 58-11 from 2013.  So her good toss of 57-7, while leading the girls list this year, doesn't improve her PR, so she remains in 11th place A-T.)

Dezerea Bryant sped a 7.19 in the 60.
This tied her PR from 2013, so she remains in a tie with 2 others in 21st place on the Indoor Collegiate DDD.

Finally, there was a fantastic 3000 race at the Yale Indoor Classic.
Claire Howlett upset favored Caroline Alcorta, running 9:43.47, with Alcorta running 9:45.59.
Howlett's time moves her into 18th place A-T HS!
Alcorta's time would make the list, but she ran faster last year, so is already on the list! Her 9:43.86 ranks her 20th!

Before I finish, I must tell you of one person who does NOT make my lists (this year, so far!).
Erin Finn, now a Michigan frosh.
She ran a flat track 3000 in 9:15.32 (given a converted- from- flat track 9:11.10), winning her race by about 12 seconds.
It's the leading Collegiate 3K time thus far!
She, of course, lost her HSR in the 5000 last year to Wesley Frazier in that incredible race, running 16:18.02 to Frazier's 16:18.01 at NBN in 2013.  Both were HS seniors.

See you all soon.
Hopefully with reports on more records from the NOP team!!

P.S.
Shame on me!
Forgot to mention two international level marks, one of which just came to me via Twitter!

Murielle Ahoure ran a 60 in 7.05 in Alabama.
This leads the 2014 list, but she ran 6.99 last year.

And newly-turned-18 (Born January 13, 1996) Anita Hinriksdottir of Iceland, ran an indoor PR of 2:01.82 in a beautifully front-run race in Iceland today!!
I THINK this is the Age 18 record I was missing (See my post about the upcoming race between Anita, Mary Cain, Ajee Wilson, and Natoya Goule!).
I know of no faster Age 18 times from indoors!
As noted, she led the whole way, so I suspect she MIGHT do the same against Cain et al!!

2 Races, 6 Records (& 6 Moves on All Time Lists)

The two races took all of 15:40.51 to run (for the winners).
Out of that time came 6 All Time Records, and 6 significant moves onto or up the Top 24 Performers lists (my DDD's).
First, I'll cover the records and such, then comment on the evening.

1000 Meters
Seventeen year old Mary Cain WON this race, barely edging by 32 year old Treniere Moser just before the finish.
The American Record didn't fall.
But Mary shattered both the HSR and the Age 17 record, not to mention the HS Senior Class record!
Her time of 2:39.25 bettered Sarah Bowman (Brown's) HSR by 4.15 seconds, a huge chunk for a middle distance race.
According to MY records, Mary's 2:47.29 from her 2012 Sophomore indoor season had been the Age 17 record, and she beat that by a whopping 8.04 seconds!!
(The Senior Class record was Bowman Brown's now former HSR of 2:43.40 from 2005.)
Cain did NOT run fast enough to make the World DDD list.
But she moved onto the USA DDD list in a big way!
She is now # 8 A-T American!!
Her former PR of 2:47.29 had been # 6 on the HS DDD list.
Of course, she now LEADS that list!!

Treniere Moser's time of 2:39.32 is now # 10 on the United States DDD.
With Cain and Moser moving ON the American DDD list, one of the women who were kicked OFF it was...Sarah Bowman Brown!!
You have to feel sorry for Sarah, having lost the HSR, the 12th Grade Class Record, AND her place on the United States DDD in less than 2 minutes and 40 seconds!!
Moser did NOT get the Age 32 record, as that is held by the US record holder, Jen Toomey, with her AR 2:34.19!

5000 Meters
Galen Rupp, age 27, smashed the AR with his fantastic time of 13:01.26!
This bettered Lopez Lomong's mark of 13:07.00 by 5.74 big seconds, a pretty fair beating!!
This is also now the new Age 27 record!!
He of course is now Number ONE on the USA Indoor DDD list (moving up from 3rd!).
And he's now # 7 on the World DDD list, moving up from a 2-way tie at 19th!!

But Rupp wasn't the only guy who made waves.

Sam Chelanga, from Kenya, gave Galen a run for his money!
He ended up in 2nd, time of 13:04.35.
This moves him onto the World DDD list, all the way to 10th place!

And Cam Levins, of Canada, broke the Canadian record by over 6 seconds, his time being 13:19.16.

Not a bad collection of records coming from just two races in mid-January in a low-key collegiate meet!

In the 1000, Dorr took them out in 30.46 for the first 200, pretty much on pace for the AR.
But a 2nd 200 of 33.3 or so killed that dream!
They hit 800 in about 2:08, close to what Mary ran in her 800 last week!
Moser was ahead almost throughout (except for Dorr).
But Mary Cain has a KICK!!
Even though this kick wasn't a real "Mary Cain kick", it was effective enough to pull her past Moser just before the finish!

In the 5000, Rupp was strong from the gun, and never let up.
A pacer (Name??) took them through halfway, then it was all Rupp, followed closely by Chelanga.
Levins had, by this time, fallen back, so had to run solo the last half of the race!
Rupp hit 2 miles in about 8:30, then picked it up!!
Although tiring over the last 800 or so, he finished with a 60 final 400 to beat Chelanga by 3.09 seconds!

Afterwards, they had a tough workout.....all of them (Rupp, Levins, Cain, and Moser--the NOP team).
The entire meet (plus the post-meet workout!!) was shown in its entirety by Flotrack!!
They put a mic on Salazar, so you heard EVERYTHING he said.

"Move your left arm in, Mary!!", he yelled to her as she sped around the track during 3 800's in low-2:20's, then did four 400's in close to 60, with her final 400 in 57.7!

Salazar told Flotrack that this was her best workout EVER!
I think he meant "post-race" workout, but his words made me even MORE in awe of what this 17 year old blazer has done, is doing, and almost certainly WILL do!!

Imagine, after breaking records in her race, she then runs 800's at a pace many HS girls DREAM of.
Not to mention those 400's!!
Her last one of 57.7 would place her fairly high on the 2014 HS list!!  (Not TOO high, but maybe in the top 100 girls nationwide??)
That's in a WORKOUT!!!

I'll do another post on Sunday...or whenever I get all this weekend's results collected, and figure out what marks made my T&F Record Book!
But I must mention one EXCELLENT mark that came in from Russia.
Ivan Ukhov, who just a few days ago, HJ'ed 7-9.75, upped the bar to 7-10.75, and made it!!

He was in a tie with Yaroslav Rybakov for the Age 27 record.
He's now the SOLE Age 27 record holder (indoors)!!
Also, this is a new Russian National Record, which HE held!!
He moves from a 3-way tie for 4th on the World DDD list, into a two-way tie (with Patrik Sjoberg) for 3rd on that list!!

Don't forget, Mary runs the 1 mile at BU in just 8 days!
I'm pretty sure Jordan Hasay, Shannon Rowbury, and Moser will be in that race too!
Rupp will be running the 2 mile!

BTW, Rowbury changed her schedule, and did not run in Boston today.
She's apparently running an 800 on Seattle's OT on Saturday (along with Hasay!).
And Morgan Uceny, who had been listed as an entrant in the 1000, didn't run---unknown reason!

If you like the way these records are presented, and this blog overall, please tell your friends about it.

See you all soon!

The Wait is Over!

The wait for significant action this indoor season is now over!
While it's nothing earth-shaking--on the Richter Scale, it would be a 3.0 quake (barely felt!)--this 2014 indoor season is now rounding the first curve!

I thought I had a dozen marks that found their way into my T&F Record Book.
But it's almost certainly just 11.
Before I get to those 11, I'll explain why the 12th is only "pending".

While checking MileSplit for all the HS results, I came across a truly incredible mark.
Supposedly, at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, a girl named Danyel White ran a HEAT (!!) of the 200 in 23.44.
If real, that would make her 6th All Time Indoors!!
Out of virtually nowhere!
Her previous best was 24.04 from 2013.
And she ran significantly slower in the final...about 24.8.

Now here's the problem.
Other sources say she ran 24.44 in the heat, not 23.44.
I sent 2 tweets to MileSplit telling them of this "typo", but they haven't replied...or changed the mark on their page!
So until I know for sure--and right now, I'm leaning strongly toward its being a typo--I am NOT revising my book with Ms White's mark.

There's already a Collegiate Record!!
It happened at the Penn State Relays.
Remember last season, when the Penn State MEN broke the CR in the 4X200 Relay with their 1:24.70?
Well, this year it was the Penn State WOMEN's turn!!
Their 4X200 squad shattered the old mark (VA Tech's 1:36.43 in 2008) by 0.78!!
The new CR is Penn State's 1:35.65, an average of 23.91 per 200!!

I reported in a December post that Abbey D'Agostino had run the fastest-ever indoor 5000 in December, with her 15:40.55.
And that is still the case!
But since then, I've uncovered 3 more 5000 marks that came VERY close to beating Abbey D's great mark!
These all occurred in 2013, so will be listed as 2013 marks, even though they came in the 2014 season!
They are:
Emily Sisson's 15:40.62.  (Just 0.07 from Abbey D's mark!!)  This makes her 14th fastest Collegian A-T!
(It also elevates her position on the US list...from 23rd to 17th!!)
Sarah Collins's 15:41.00 (in the same race at Boston U)  She's now # 16 A-T Collegian!
Laura Nagel's 15:42.60 (same race)  She's now 19th A-T indoors on the Collegiate DDD!

Two BIG names were removed from the list by Collins's and Nagel's entries.
(Sisson was on the list already, in 21st place, but she moves up to her 14th slot, as noted above!)
Anyway, gone are Amy Yoder (Not Yoder-Begley then!), who was 23rd, and Alexi Pappas, who was 24th.

Regina George, running for Nigeria, set a National Record in the 600 with her fabulous 1:25.76!!
I just re-entered the Indoor 600's to my book, and my records are preliminary and incomplete as of now.
But it looks like she's now # 7 on the All Time WORLD list!!!
(If I find out differently, I'll edit this post, or just add an addendum at the bottom!)

In Birmingham AL, pro runner Chanelle Price became USA Indoor # 11 in the 1000 meters with her great 2:40.03 on January 10th.
I was surprised she wasn't already on my USA Top 24 list!

Svetlana Biryukova LJ'd 22-10.75 in Russia, tying her at 18th on the World list with 1 other.
She also had not been on that list!
An "oldie", Valeria Constantin of Romania, who was in 24th with her 22-10 from 1988, was evicted!!

Moving into 18th A-T on the Men's HS Indoor list for the TJ is John Warren (Prince George VA) with his 50-9.25.
(See?  It's not all just girls making early headlines indoors!!)

In fact, two other guys get entries in my book!
Sam Kendricks PV'ed 18-4.75 to just edge on to my Collegiate DDD in 24th place!
Actually, he's tied there with 2 others!
And he's gone 19-plus outdoors, so we can expect him to "vault" up the list later this season!

The Age 27 indoor record in the High Jump was tied by Ivan Ukhov with a great early season jump of 7-9.75!!  Yaroslav Rybakov first did it in 2005!

Finally, a Purdue collegian WT'er, Dani Busch, threw 71-3.25, moving her into 24th A-T Collegiate Indoor!
She displaced 3 others who were tied there with a 70-11.25 for each!
But even more significantly, she edges onto the USA list too!!
She's now 24th All Time American!!
(Two lists for the price of one WT!!  Heh.)

Thursday will be the first wave of the Nike Oregon Project's Records Chase at Boston University.
Those marks....and others...will surely be in next week's post.
(Not saying there won't be other posts coming before that one!!)

Until then....!!

ADDED January 14:

That "23.44" for Danyel White was a typo.
Still haven't received a reply from MileSplit, and their HS page still shows 23.44.
But T&FN now lists it as 24.44, so I will accept that.
That mark does NOT make it into my book!

May I Introduce My Book?

Been blogging for over a month, and realize all you really know about my T&F Record Book is its name....with a few paltry clues as to what's IN the book!
So...may I introduce the book?

I began running, and reading Track and Field News magazine, in January 1962.
Being a numbers geek, I soon decided I needed (?) to create my own record book of T&F.
You had various books then that provided coverage of one or another part of the sport--HS, Collegiate, international--but no book (I knew of) that had it ALL.

Long story short, I scanned the pages of T&FN (and the NCAA Guide, and HS Track Annual) and scribbled (w/ cheap pens on cheap lined notebook paper) all the records and marks I could find, creating various categories to keep track (sic!) of them.

There was no women's track then--or at least no coverage of it!---so it was all about the men then.
In addition to what I have now, I had....

state by state HS records (for all 50 states!)
college by college records (best by a UCLA, or Villanova, or Oregon, etc athlete)
road records (for the 5K, 10K, 15K, 10 mile, 20K, etc)

Then I entered hippie life.
Six years ('67-'73) of no running and no deep involvement in T&F.
I somehow lost the book!

So when I re-emerged into LIFE....I re-created my book....from scratch.
And this time, I streamlined it to make it more manageable.
And for the past 40+ years, I've kept up and revised this now-550+ page book!

It's NOT a book....not really.
It's not bound.
It's not typed, and there's no writing, no dust jacket, no photos.
I still do it using BIC pens (Don't like pencils!) and college-rule-lined notebook paper.

I keep it in manila folders.
There are 28 folders.
Seven each for indoor men, indoor women, outdoor men, and outdoor women.
For each grouping, I have 7 categories.
They are:
Miscellaneous
Age Records
Meet Records
National Records
DDD-High School
DDD-Collegiate
DDD-United States and World (both in one folder)

First, let me explain the acronym "DDD".
In the beginning, I wanted a Top 30 list of the top performers for each event.
I chose 30 because college rule lined paper has 32 lines.
So it fit on the page, and was similar to the Top 40 pop radio concept!
But 30 was too large a number.
So I cut it to 25.
Then, for no particular reason, I again cut it....to 24.
Well, DDD stands for "Double Dandy Dozen", as these were now Top 24 (two dozen!) lists!

Category by category (or folder by folder), here's my book:

Miscellaneous:
I keep the folders in order....Men Outdoor, then Women Outdoor, then Men & Women Indoor.
Thus the top folder has more material than the other Miscellaneous folders do.
The contents are:
A long list (3 columns per page, 6 pages) of yard to metric conversions.  (I'm too cheap to buy T&FN's The Big Gold Book!!)
Totals of all the numbers in the entire book (for my own knowledge)
Best Combined Runners (such as fastest combined 100-200 guys, or fastest combined 3000-5000-10000 women)...I have 12 different combinations!
Best Place Marks (Normally goes through 7th place, but more for long distances!)
WR's, CR's, HSR's (Just your normal stuff!)
Class Records (9th through 12th grades in HS, then Frosh to Senior in college)
I do NOT have Best Combined Runners or Best Place Marks in the Indoor sections!

Age Records
Simply, I have individual year age records from 17 through 40, though the two "bookends" are "17 and under" and "40 and over".
These are based on actual birthdates, not just year of birth.
There are no "junior" or "youth" or "masters" records, just the record for Age 28 or Age 33, etc.

Meet Records
Up until just recently, I had VERY strict standards for inclusion of marks here.
Too much work otherwise!!  (I don't get paid for this!)
But I've loosened the restrictions recently, so more records will be included.
However, not every meet is covered.
Many of the "lesser" (non-DL) meets aren't in here, especially those in Europe,  even if a WR was set there!
But I have LOTS of meets, and LOTS of records!

National Records
Same as with Meet Records!
Had tough restrictions, but have now loosened them.
But this book deals with the "elites", so you won't find any 32:00 Men's 10K's from the Tongan Islands in here, or whatever!

The DDD's
Explained (somewhat) above.
My Top 24 Performers lists....for most events.
Again, I'm expanding (somewhat) my lists.
I'm adding the indoor 600 and 2000 (the latter because of some important races coming up!), and the HS Girls Pentathlon.
Right now, still in the process of expanding these, I've limited the 600 and 2000 lists to just ONE dozen, mainly because there's not many races at these distances.
NOT included are the Indoor 55's--See my earlier post on this subject!-- 300, 500, or Men's Heptathlon.
And NO Walks or Relays lists!
The HS and Collegiate lists are in separate folders.
I put the World and USA in the same folder (World 1st, USA under it) in order to better visually see where the USA stands in the World!
So those folders are the "fattest"!!

Now you've been introduced to my Track and Field Record Book.

The next post WILL be all about the records (or marks that made it into my book!!) set this weekend, and a few others I've missed.
This post will be up by Monday morning, less than 36 hours from now.

One more thing.
My sources for finding these marks include:
Track and Field News magazine and website.
Track Newsletter and eTN, both published by T&FN.
Athletics Annual, a book edited by Peter Matthews.
USATF Media Guide and FAST Annual.
High School Track, an annual put out by Jack Shepard.
Twitter!!
Lists provided by MileSplit and a Collegiate site (Can't recall its name right now!).
Anywhere or Anybody that provides the needed information!!

I thank you all!!

See you soon!

2014 to be a record-breaking year?

The Rolling Stones had a great song that might have been speaking about the 2014 indoor T&F season.
That's right, the Stones!!
(Not too much a joke, as Mick Jagger was known to sometimes run 10 miles a day!!)
Anyway, the song was "Waiting On a Friend".

The "Friend" we're all "Waiting on" is the highly-anticipated onslaught of record-breaking I see as more and more a GIVEN!!
Here's some reasons why:

I gave lots of details on the Nike Oregon Project's "invasion of Boston U's indoor track in the coming month in my December 21 post "NOP invades BU--Records?".
Now Coach Salazar has made it almost a guarantee: The NOP crew ARE going for RECORDS!!
And when a World Class team like NOP says they're going for records, you can safely bet records WILL fall!!

In addition to the list I provided in that post.....
ADD: Shannon Rowbury & Jordan Hasay to the January 16th 1000 field, along with Mary Cain and Treniere Moser!  With Rowbury in it, I'm not as certain that it will be Cain and Moser setting the records.
If Shannon's ready, this could be the fastest 1000 of the entire season!!

ADD: Matthew Centrowitz will run a 1000 on Jan 24/25.

ADD: Also in Boston, but at the Reggie Lewis Center on February 8 (the same day Galen Rupp will be going for the mile record at BU!!), Cain will go for the records at the rarely run 2000!!

The latter is particularly intriguing.
As noted, the 2K is rarely run anymore, indoors or out.
Here's the relevant records (and other data):

World Record: 5:30.53 by Gabriela Szabo in 1998.
American Record: 5:34.52 by Mary Slaney in 1985.

I will now say that 17 year old Mary Cain has a chance---though a less-than-50/50 chance!---to get the WR!!
But her chances for the American Record go up to about 80/20!!
Evenly split, that's 1500 enroute in 4:10.89, or approximately 4:30 at the mile, with a 64 last 400!
If Cain is serious, the AR is GONE!!
For the far less likely WR, Cain's even splits would lead to a 4:07.89 enroute 1500, and about 4:27 at the mile, with a 63 last 400!!  Possible??
(BTW, second fastest American indoor 2000?  Ruth Wysocki's 5:45.93 from 1985!  That's right, it's 11+ seconds behind Slaney's record!!)
(And 3rd on the World indoor list, behind Szabo and Slaney?  None other than Meseret Defar's enroute time of 5:34.8 from 2006!)

Another 2000 race that just now was announced is at the Millrose Games.
A class field includes:
Bernard Lagat (The AR is 4:58.6 by Steve Scott in 1981.  The WR is 4:49.99 by Ken Bekele in 2007!)
Nick Willis
Cam Levins
Evan Jager
German Fernandez

Some other news has popped up recently that surely indicate 2014 will be a record-breaking year!
Or at least a far noisier year than first anticipated, being it's a non-OG/WC year!  (Well, we're talking INDOORS....and we have the World Indoor meet in March!!)

Here's some news of who's appearing where:

Besides Cain at the Boston New Balance meet on February 8......

Jenn Suhr will be in the PV
Hagos Gebrhiwet will run the 3000.
Nick Willis and Leonel Manzano will do the 1 mile.
Ryan Whiting will lead the SP.
And don't forget, Jenny Simpson has already been slated to do the 2 Mile, and Brenda Martinez the 1000!!

The Russian Winter meeting on February 2 has.....
Pam Jelimo in the 800.  The Meet Record is Larisa Zhao's 1:57.53 in 2005.
Francena McCorory in the 400.  The Meet Record is Olga Zaitseva's 50.15 in 2006.
(And probably a whole lot more!!)

This coming weekend?
Well, there's the Dartmouth Relays.
No word about what....or if....Abbey D'Agostino will run, but....if she does, based on her December- fastest-EVER 5000 of 15:40.55, you can wager it will be FAST!!

Yes, I am (WE are!!) "Waiting On a Friend"!!

And I think I see the plane approaching!!!

A Track & Field Record Book Trivia Tour

While we wait for this still-dormant 2014 indoor season to get to its record-breaking levels (It will!!  Soon!), here's some facts & trivia from my T&F Record Book.
All are about INDOOR track and field!

Mo Farah holds 2 British records.
2 Mile          8:08.07     2012
5000           13:10.60    2011
Farah's NOP teammate, Galen Rupp, holds 1 USA mark.
3000            7:30.16     2013
That may change this year!

Speaking of NOP members, did you know Mary Cain finished faster than Tirunesh Dibaba in that Boston 2 mile last year?
Last 200's:
Cain          31.15
Dibaba      31.68
But Dibaba's last 400 was faster, 64.59 to Cain's 65.91.

Laban Rotich holds more individual year age records in the 1500 than Bernard Lagat.
Rotich     31 (3:36.76), 34 (3:38.34), 36 (3:39.28), 38 (3:39.78)
Lagat      30 (3:33.34), 33 (3:35.23), 37 )3:36.20)
He also totally cleans Lagat's clock in the mile...by a 4 to 1 margin!

Brad Hudson is a respected coach in California.
He's also the 5th fastest HS 5K indoor runner in history, with a 14:29.28 in 1984.

In the great Ethiopian (& World!!) "War Between the D's", Defar clearly wins.
She owns 3 national indoor records.
Dibaba has none!

After Lisa Bernhagen's HSR of 6-3 in the HJ, only 13 others have hit 6-0!
And just 2 of those 14 came in the 21st century!
The oldest, Joni Huntley's 6-0.50 in 1974, is now 40 years old!

Brianna Jackucewitz ran her 16:43.02 5K PR (Then a HSR!!) in 2004.
She was a 7th grader!
She never bettered that mark.
It still ranks 7th on the A-T indoor HS list!

Heike Drechsler owns 10 individual year age records in the LJ.
17 (21-8.75), 19 (22-11.25), 21 (23-11), 23 (24-2.25), 29 (23-7.25), 30 (23-3.25),
34 (22-2.25), 35 (22-6.25), 36 (22-1.75), 37 (20-5.25)
She turned 49 on December 16th!

Brittany Riley, the WT leader, was just 20 when she hit her 83-10.25 WR!
But Amber Campbell dominates the individual year age records!
She has 7.
Riley has 3.

Bianca Knight holds both the indoor HS and Collegiate records in the 200.
Her HSR 22.97 came in 2007, as a HS senior.
Her CR 22.40 was in 2008, as a freshman.

Francena McCorory is the only other woman to hold both marks, her's coming in the 400.
Her HSR 51.93 was in 2006, her senior year.
Her CR of 50.54 from 2010 also came in her senior year...in college!

There are no men who hold both!

Well, hope you enjoyed this little track (and field) trivia tour.

Next post HOPEFULLY will contain some astounding 2014 records!!

Which Indoor Records to Fall in 2014? Women

And now for my women's predictions!

World
60 (6.92) If Shelly-Ann were to try for it, this VERY good record could go!  It's been 21 years!!
200 (21.87) Another VERY tough record, also 21 years old!  Felix may not be fully back from her injury.  Kim Duncan ran 21.80 with a slight wind in 2013 outdoors.  Can she duplicate that indoors?
400 (49.59) Yes another SUPER record, this one dating from 1982!!  Ohuruogu & Montsho both ran 49.41 at WC.  McCorory is much improved.  This could go!
1000 (2:30.94) Brenda Martinez will run the 1K at Millrose.  She's HOT (as a runner, silly!).  Will her 2013 outdoor momentum continue indoors in 2014?  Two NOP girls, Cain & Moser, will be running this in Boston.  But they don't seem at this level just yet!  (See more predictions on the female NOP'ers, to follow!)
1500 & 1 Mile (3:58.28 & 4:17.14) The NOP Quartet of Rowbury, Cain, Moser & Hasay will race the mile in Boston!  (Who else??)  That mile mark of Melinte's is now 23 years old!  The mile is slightly easier than the 1500.  They'd have to be at 4:00 or 4:01 at 1500 to get it!
2 Mile (9:06.26) Tirunesh D said she could've gotten this at Boston last year, but the pacing was off.  If either of the D's (Dibaba & Defar) try for it...in the SAME race!!...it could go!  The 3K is too hard to get enroute.  I doubt Jenny Simpson can run this, but she'll do a 2 mile at Millrose!
5000 (14:24.37) Again, it would take one of the D's going for it...seriously!
60H (7.68) Is Rollins ready to flash her 12.26 power indoors?  (She holds the CR, at 7.78!!)  Will Pearson challenge her?  And what about all the other Americans?
HJ (6-9.75) As with the men, there's a top-end group (Chicherova, Barrett, Shkolina) who could fight each other at the WIC for this WR.
PV (16-5.50) Suhr got this last year!  If the 16 Foot Club competes together, one of them can break it!  But I'm not SUHR (Heh!) which one!
WT (83-10.25) This is not an international event.  Few outside the USA compete in this event.  If they did, this mark might not even be in the Top 10!!  (With all due respect to Riley!!)
The Relays (3:23.37, 8:06.24, 10:50.98) IF a National team goes for these, they're all breakable.  (USA, GB, Russia??)

USA
60 (6.95) Devers did this 21 years ago.  Marion Jones matched it in 1998...presumably without the help of drugs!!  There's several young USA sprinters fresh from breakthrough 2013 seasons!
200 (22.18) (See World predictions for this event!)
400 (50.54) McCorory holds this AR.  She had her best year ever in 2013 outdoors.  Enough said!  (Felix & Richards-Ross are returning from injury.)
800 (1:58.71) A great race is set for Millrose, with Cain & Wilson among the entrants.  Wilson ran 0.50 faster outdoors last year.  Mary Cain has the potential to go this fast.  That race could see BOTH break it!  But it's a toughie, now 12 years old!
1000 (2:34.19)  Martinez will challenge this one at Millrose, with Cain and Moser due for a duel in Boston.  Maybe all of them can get this relatively easy mark!
1500 & 1 Mile (3:59.98 & 4:20.5) The mile AR is MUCH easier than the 1500 (About 4:03 or 4:04 at 1500 enroute!).  The NOP Quartet of Rowbury, Cain, Moser, and Hasay will be racing this in Boston.
2 Mile (9:23.38) Jenny Simpson WILL smash this record to pieces at Millrose!!  If she doesn't...I hope those NOP gals will add this distance to their list of record attempts!!  (The 3000 mark of Flanagan's is too difficult to get enroute!
5000 (14:47.62) Don't know of any scheduled attempts for this Flanagan AR.  It would take a VERY serious effort!  (Molly Huddle??)
60H (7.72) (Again, see my World predictions above!)
HJ (6-7.50) Barrett has topped this mark outdoors...more than once!  Is Lowe herself coming back from giving birth last summer??
LJ (23-8.75) Reese is ALWAYS capable of  breaking her own 2012 AR.  That is, when she doesn't foul!
PV (16-5.50) I'm NOT going to make another play on Suhr's name!!  (SUHRly not!!) LOL
SP (65-3.25) Camerena-Williams is pregnant!  But Michelle Carter isn't!!  It's her's for the taking!
WT (83-10.25) Amanda Bingson broke the HT record twice last year!  Don't know if she'll try for this one.
All the Relays (See World predictions above!)

Collegiate
60 & 200 (7.09 & 22.40) Seems all the REALLY great collegians are going pro before graduating!  But the Collegiate ranks always produce great sprinters.  Both of these records are vulnerable.
400 (50.54)  McCorory's CR is good, but Ashley Spencer is capable of challenging it.
800 (2:00.75) A good mark, but Laura Roesler had her best year in 2013.  She's back!
1000 (2:41.00) Probably the easiest CR to get, but it's not often run by the top women.  If Roesler (or D'Agostino??) gave it a go, it WOULD be broken!
1500 & 1 Mile (4:10.20 & 4:25.91) Simpson's (Actually, she was then Jenny Barringer!) mile mark is much better than the 1500.  It's worth maybe 4:08 at 1500.  The middle distances are in a Renaissance of sorts in recent years in the US.  And there are some fast collegians who haven't graduated or turned pro!
5000 (15:14.18)  Abbey D is finishing her great career at Dartmouth.  She might want to go out as the CR holder here!!  She's surely capable!  I don't believe they're at this level yet, but I'll be watching to see what times freshmen Erin Finn and Wesley Frazier can run at this distance.  Remember their fabulous finish at NBN last year??
PV (14-11) This event is ALWAYS vulnerable.  Breakthroughs happen frequently.  Waiting for that first INdoor 15 footer!
4X800R (8:25.5) I mention this one relay for 2 reasons.  One, it's now 27 years old!!  Two, at Penn last year, TWO teams broke the outdoor CR!!  Will Villanova and Oregon go at it INdoors??

High School
60 & 200 (7.19 & 22.97)  No one broke 7.30 last year, but there's some top name sprinters back in 2014.  The 200 HSR seems a bit easier than the 60.

NOTE: The Mary Cain Question.  As a Pro runner now, while still a HS student, is she even eligible to break HSR's??  And who determines this?  T&FN??  Some HS federation?  Me?  (LOL)  I'm saying Cain IS eligible!!  And that's the way I'll be treating this "problem" from here on!!

800 (2:01.8) Cain should go sub-2:00!!  If she doesn't break this, can Raevyn Rogers??
1000 (2:43.40) Sarah (Bowman) Brown's HSR is now 9 years old.  Cain, Alexa Efraimson, and Elise Cranny are all capable of getting it. It's a 2:10 800 with a last 200 in 33!
1500 & 1 Mile (4:11.72 & 4:28.25) See USA predictions above.  Add Cranny and Efraimson as solid challengers.
3000 & 2 Mile (9:04.51 & 9:38.68)  Cain got the Golden opportunity last year to smash the records, running in the same race as Tirunesh D.  And she did it!  But as of now, Cain isn't scheduled for a 2 mile (or 3K).  But she, and the other two BIG names, are surely capable of bringing these HSR's down to unbeatable territory!
5000 (16:18.01) I doubt Cain will run this indoors!  But again, Efraimson and Cranny, not to mention Sarah Baxter (and, believe it or not, 3 or 4 others!), are ALL well able to bring this record DOWN!!  And I mean UNDER 16 minutes!
60H (8.16) Dior Hall returns!  She ran within 0.01 of the record last year!
HJ (6-3) The HJ at HS level made a comeback last year, with several over 6 feet.  Cyre Virgo and Vashti Cunningham were 2 of them.  They're back.  Bernhagen's mark is now 30 years old!!
LJ (21-7.50) Carol Lewis's HSR is even older than Bernhagen's, as she set it in 1981.  Courtney Corrin is just a soph now, but she set the 9th grade OUTdoor mark (21-0) last year!  Can she improve 8 inches?
TJ (44-6.75) Kiturah Orji came SO close to the OUTdoor record last year! Can she be the first over 45 feet?
PV (14-2.50) As I said earlier, PV marks at the Collegiate and HS levels are vulnerable.  Same goes here.
SP (54-9.50) Carter's mark dates from 2003.  Last year, Maggie Ewen reached 54-1 indoors.  This year, Raven Saunders EXPLODED all the way from 42+ to 53-8 just a couple of weeks ago!!  If she continues as she has, a 55 footer is in the stars!
All the Relays   Too many to list!!  HS'ers run a LOT more relay distances....and a lot more relays, period!....than in the other categories. None of the HSR's were broken last year!  But ALL of them could go!!

Now let the games begin!!!

Which Indoor Records to Fall in 2014? Men

For my first post of 2014, I will predict which Indoor Records are most vulnerable this season, and offer a few names of who might (or can!) break them.
(Outdoor Record predictions will be posted sometime in March!)
I'll go event by event, men and women, in the usual 4 categories (World, American, Collegiate, and High School).
I will list only those events where I believe the record can (and will?) be broken.
Because of the size, I'll divide it into 2 posts, by gender.
Men first.

World
200 (19.92)     Bolt or Blake COULD get this one, but won't.  They don't run indoors!
400 (44.57)     This one SEEMS easy to break, but Clement's WR is now 9 years old!  Will Merritt, James and Santos try for it?
800 (1:42.67)  I doubt Rudisha is ready.  Can Symmonds do it?  Aman, Amos, Kitum, Solomon??
1500 (3:31.18) Again, the record SHOULD go, but WILL it?  Kiprop & Farah??
2 Mile (8:04.35) My favorite event!  But Bekele's WR is tough! However, any of several could get it.  They just have to WANT it!
HJ (7-11.50)    Bondarenko, Barshim, Drouin??  Maybe at the WIC?
TJ (58-9.50)    Will Tamgho get his own WR??  He went almost 5 inches better outdoors!
4X400, 4X800, DMR (3:01.06, 7:13.94, 9:25.97)  All of these relay WR's CAN go, but I don't know where, or if, the opportunities will arise!

USA
400 (44.57)    Merritt!!
800 (1:45.00) Symmonds publicly stated he'll be going for it!  But will Solomon, Sowinski, or Johnson beat him to it?  Definitely vulnerable!
1000 (2:17.86) Another Symmonds target!  And this one, he WILL get...easily!!  Mark my words!
1 Mile (3:49.89 Seems Rupp & Lagat are playing a "You break my record, I'll break yours!" game these past few years indoors!  Lagat has this one now.  Will Rupp get it when he races in Boston?
2 Mile (8:09.49) Basically the same premise as with the mile!  It's Lagat's record now!  Will Rupp (or someone else?) get it?  (I would add the 3000, but that's too fast for Rupp to get enroute to a 2 mile!!)
5000 (13:07.00) Probably the softest AR in the distances!  Should go!
HJ (7-10.50) Will Kynard reach this height indoors?  Maybe in the WIC, in a great battle with Bondarenko, Barshim, and Drouin?
TJ (58-3.25)  Will Conley's 1987 AR fall?  Taylor & Claye can do it!
SP (74-4.25) I'd love to see Barnes's 1989 record fall!!  It's now 25 years old!  Whiting could do it, but it would take a 15 inch improvement on his PR!!
All the Relays (See World.)

Collegiate
1000 (2:19.53) This one seems the easiest to break! And collegians run it often!  But it can't be on an OT!!
3000 & 5000 (7:38.59 & 13:08.28) I may be vastly overstating Ed Cheserek's potential here, but I was so impressed by his shocker win at NCAA cross that I'm saying he CAN make the MASSIVE improvements necessary on the track to get these marks!!  (Think Lawi Lalang!!)
60H (7.47)   Torian's CR is now 17 years old!  The Collegiate scene has some good hurdlers.  This record  should finally go!
PV (19-2.25) This record is now 15 years old.  In 2013, there was a slight resurgence in the Collegiate PV scene.  Maybe Kendricks, or a big improvement by one of the 18-6/18-8 guys?
WT (78-9.25) I'm waiting for one of those hotshot HS dudes to smash through the 80 foot barrier in college!!  Step right up, guys!  (Or at least 78-10!!)
The Relays    Two of them (4X200 & 4X400) went in 2013.  The 4X800 is now 25 years old!!  These marks--all 4 of them--are tough, but doable!

High School
400 (45.92) I thought Cherry would get this one last year, after his 33.05 HSR in the 300.  But...!  There's several 46+ guys back this year.
60H (7.57 & 7.85) Humphrey & Brown, those 13.38 guys, are back this year!
PV (17-9.25) Devin King, a solid 17-footer, is back!
All the Relays   Relay records are almost always vulnerable!  Just takes one STAR runner, with a solid back-up trio!!  Will be interesting to see if any fall in 2014.

I'm sure of one thing!
Make that two things!

1. I will be wrong on most, if not all, of these predictions and opinions!
2. There will be at least 1 shocking race/jump/throw NO ONE expected!! (On the girl's HS side, it's already happened!!  Raven Saunders improving 11 feet (!!) to reach 4th A-T in the SP!!)

Women's 2014 predictions to follow!
