2017 World & US Athletes of the Year--OUTdoors

This year's edition is expanded over previous editions!
(The added Awards will be announced at their due time!)
As always, however, I'll begin with a few late December marks from around the world!

Brian Herron "rust-busted" his season in Birmingham AL's Crossplex like few ever have!!
He ran 3 events, and in two of them, he became HS A-T 4th!!
His 46.43 in the 400 moves him from 6th to 4th, and gives him the Junior Class record!!
For his 200 of 20.95, it moves him from 17th A-T HS, tied with 3 others, to 4th!
He also sped a 60 in 6.95.

Other good marks--
Angelina Kusnova, a Russian, PV'ed 15-1
Mariya Lasitskene, another Russian, HJ'ed 6-6.75, then took a few swipes at the INdoor WR
And in 2 separate venues OUTdoors in Australia, Jordy Williamsz and Jordan Gusman ran 3:57 Miles (3:57.21 & 3:57.29, respectively)!

Now on to the AOY's, etc!

World Athlete of the Year--MEN
MUTAZ BARSHIM
This was not a clear victory!
Barshim was dominant & consistent, but the World HJ was a weak event this year!

Honorable Mentions
This list is long!
Christian Coleman & Justin Gatlin, Christian Taylor & Will Claye, Johannes Vetter & Thomas Rohler!
Sam Kendricks, Eliud Kipchoge, Emmanuel Korir, Fred Kerley, Kevin Mayer!
Pawel Fajdek, Omar McLeod, Karsten Warholm & Luvo Manyonga!
Ryan Crouser & Thomas Walsh.
Elijah Manangoi & Wayde Van Niekerk.

Special Mention
Yohan Deniz so completely dominated the WC 50K Walk that he easily could have won my AOY!!
His 3:33:12 was A-T Number 2, and it was negative split!!

US Athlete of the Year--MEN
CHRISTIAN COLEMAN
This one was close!!
T&FN gave it to Sam Kendricks!
Like Barshim, he was consistent & dominant, and was the only OUTdoor 6 meter guy!
But Coleman combined his WC Silver (beating Usain Bolt!) with his sensational NCAA double!!

Honorable Mentions
Kendricks, Gatlin, Crouser, Joe Kovacs, Taylor & Claye, Kerley, Galen Rupp, Evan Jager, and Kerron Clement!

World Athlete of the Year--WOMEN
MARIYA LASITSKENE
For the same reasons given for Barshim!
That both AOY's are HJ'ers SHOULD have made this the Year of the HJ--but again, the fields were generally not deep!
But in this Russian's case, she made so many WR attempts that it pushed her to the top!

Honorable Mentions
Mary Keitany & Tirunesh Dibaba
Ekaterina Stefanidi, Yulimar Rojas & Caterine Ibarguen
Sally Pearson & Kori Carter
Ruth Jebet & Emma Coburn
Helen Obiri & Almaz Ayana
Brittney Reese, Anita Wlodarczyk, Sandra Perkovic, and Nafi Thiam!
Elaine Thompson & Tori Bowie
Shaunae Miller-Uibo & Dafne Schippers!

US Athlete of the Year--WOMEN
EMMA COBURN
This should have been a TIE--with Courtney Frerichs!!
For SHOCK alone, Coburn & Frerichs win!!
But getting her American Record--and the Gold--decided it!

Honorable Mentions
Frerichs, of course!
Shalane Flanagan & Jenny Simpson
Ajee Wilson & Phyllis Francis
Bowie & Reese & Bartoletta
Kori Carter
Sandi Morris & Katie Nageotte
Kendell Williams & Erica Bougard
Gwen Berry & Keturah Orji

Special Mention
To KATIE BURNETT & ERIN TAYLOR-TALCOTT, those 50000 meter Walk Pioneers!!

World Performance of the Year--MEN
This one had a PAIR of PAIRS to decide on!
Would it be the co-defeats of Usain Bolt by Justin Gatlin & Christian Coleman at the WC's---
or the massive JT's of Johannes Vetter & Thomas Rohler??
Because Bolt was NOT Bolt this year, this Award goes to JOHANNES VETTER!
But they were so close, it could have been a TIE!!

HM's to---
Deniz, Kipchoge (for his Berlin win ONLY!), Crouser & Kovacs for their 74 footers, Kerley, Korir, Omar McLeod, and Kevin Mayer.

US Performance of the Year--MEN
CHRISTIAN COLEMAN for his 9.82 NCAA win & Collegiate Record!

Honorable Mentions
Kerley, Gatlin, Galen Rupp (for his Chicago win!), Taylor's 59-5, and Kendricks's 6.00!!

World Performance of the Year--WOMEN
EMMA COBURN
This one ALMOST went to Ines Henriques, who won that 50K Walk in London in WR-smashing time!!
But even in the 3000SC, this award could have gone equally to Ruth Jebet or Celiphine Chespol or Courtney Frerichs!
Then there's Mary Keitany & Tirunesh Dibaba, Helen Obiri or Almaz Ayana, Sally Pearson's WC win, or to Stefanidi's 16+ PV!
Not forgetting T&FN's AOY--Anita Wlodarczyk!!

Honorable Mentions
All those names just above!
Add Ajee Wilson, Brittney Reese, Miller-Uibo, and Phyllis Francis!

Special Mention
To INES HENRIQUES, for being the brilliant 50K Pioneering WR breaker--TWICE!!

World Personality of the Year--MEN
My criteria for Personality of the Year does not insist on that person being GOOD!
Or a winner.
Or Record breaker!
Thus, I give this one to JUSTIN GATLIN!
Yes, he did win the WC 100!
But the guy he beat ALSO could have won here---just for being who he is!!
For DA MAN---even at his competitive WORST--Usain Bolt was a Personality to behold--and savor!!
In the end, however, it was Gatlin's internalizing of all the BOO's he received in London--his HUMANITY in the face of pure HATRED--that gave him this prize!!

US Personality of the Year--MEN
As happens whenever an American wins the WORLD Award, he or she also gets the US prize!!
So it's JUSTIN GATLIN--again!

World Personality of the Year--WOMEN
GABRIELLE "GABE" GRUNEWALD
Who else??
For stark dramatic humanitarian beauty within & without--for everything that makes people HUMAN--for staring death in the face and saying "FUCK YOU!!"--and for being who this incredible Woman IS--Gabe truly deserves this Award!!

US Personality of the Year--WOMEN
GABE GRUNEWALD!
No other!

I'm adding a couple of other Trophies to this collection!

Best Competitors in a Single Event--MEN
Johannes Vetter & Thomas Rohler went back & forth on the longest JT's of 2017!
And they went FAR!!
Add Christian Taylor & Will Claye!
Gatlin & Coleman--and Bolt!
Crouser & Walsh!

Best Competitors in a Single Event--WOMEN
Emma Coburn & Courtney Frerichs!!
But you have to mention--
Keitany & Dibaba in the London Marathon!
Yulimar Rojas & Caterine Ibarguen
Stefanidi & Sandi Morris

World Newcomer of the Year--MEN
KARSTEN WARHOLM
Not the fastest, but surely the most consistent & most endearing!!

Others were Emmanuel Korir & Fred Kerley!

US Newcomer of the Year--MEN
Mr Kerley!

World Newcomer of the Year--WOMEN
SALWA NASER
She PR'ed in EVERY race she ran!!
And wound up with a 49.88!!

Others were Konstanze Klosterhalfen & Celiphine Chespol!

US Newcomer of the Year--WOMEN
While not really a "newcomer", I have to give this one to COURTNEY FRERICHS---especially for her 15.32 second PR in THE race of the year!!
Also to another not-so-new person---Katie Nageotte!!

Well, folks, this ends this blog's coverage of 2017!
Here in Bellingham WA, we are about 17 hours away from---2018!!!

See you NEXT YEAR!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Christmas Gifts--for 2018

With all due respect to all other's religious, philosophical, and personal beliefs, this Jewish-raised person still LOVES Christmas!
The songs, the movies, the trees, Santa & Rudolph, Mistletoe kisses, the JOY!
And the chance to write such a blog as this!

NOTE--In my research for this post, I reread my "New Year's Wishes" post from January 1, 2016!
And noticed my subject matter for 2018 hasn't changed much from that for 2016!
Which means that not many of those wishes came to fruition!

My first Christmas Gift for 2018 (combined INdoors & OUTdoors) is for this blog to reach--and far surpass--the 500 post point!
This being post 442 gives this one a fighting chance!

Continuing in the "Gifts for ME" category, I gift myself a full year of blogging, most-ever page views, and recognition by Track & Field News as a respected source of T&F Records & Marks!

2017 has seen about 460 marks on my current INdoor DDD's!
I'd love for that number to top 500 this INdoor season!

That, in general, this "OFF-year" be ON!!!

I gift a KIDNAP-free 50000 meter Walk for Women!
I give Maria Michta-Coffey sub 1:30 times in the 20K Walk!

Wrapped in a red ribbon are times of 12:59 and 26:59 for Ed Cheserek!
Also, that Brodey Hasty breaks the King's INdoor 5000 HSR of 13:57.04!
And that Katelyn Tuohy gets VERY close to 15:30 in her HSR attempt on January 20th in Virginia!

I'm wrapping gifts for the Top-Level returns to action for Mary Cain, Demi Payne, Valerie Adams, Renaud Lavillenie, Wayde Van Niekerk (perhaps late in the OUTdoor season??), Sarah Brown, and anyone else who had down years in 2017 due to illness, injury, or pregnancy!

I donate World Records (INdoors & OUTdoors) for High Jumpers Mariya Lasitskene and Mutaz Barshim!!
Yes, I mean FOUR new World Records!!

I gift the powers-that-be the SANITY to finally change back the 1600 & 3200 to the one & two Mile!
And to the NCAA the COURAGE to BAN Oversize Tracks as venues to Qualify for its Championship INdoors!!

I'm sending Santa to each & every Diamond League to provide time on their schedules for Hammer Throws and 10000 Track races!!
And to return to SIX attempts for all Throwers in ALL competitions for the Top 8 or 9 competitors!!

A gift within a gift--within a gift--that 2018's World Championships INdoors be WORTHY of its name!!

Wrapped gifts are surprises that elicit smiles!
Thus, I want to see smiles on the faces of USA Steeplechasers as they (Evan Jager?) produce their first sub-8:00--and sub-9:00 (Courtney Frerichs and/or Colleen Quigley and/or Emma Coburn!!) American Records!
Except I won't see them as surprises!!

Santa is having a VERY tough time gliding down the chimney's where T&FN, FloTrack, and Let's Run reside!!
But IF Mr Claus can make it through, he is carrying the following display of gifts---

the elimination of "Absolute" or "Comprehensive" lists
12 GREAT issues of T&FN
a "new" Forum at Let's Run that is hate & sexist & troll/spam & STUPIDITY free
FREE & technologically-perfect livestreams from FloTrack
the return of frequent Lists to T&FN's eTN
SEPARATE season Lists on T&FN's website--with NO crossover

I'm hiring FedEx to knock on Tyrese Cooper's door and gift him HSR's in the IN & OUT 400's!!

Not to mention Record-Shattering Frosh years for Samantha Watson & Sydney McLaughlin!!
(The latter gave us a Sneak Preview with her 300 time of 36.12!!)

With the 2018 Boston Marathon's long list of US notables entered, I bequeath the gifts of American Records for Galen Rupp and Shalane Flanagan (or Molly Huddle or Des Linden or Jordan Hasay!!)--given that this blog accepts Boston times for its Records & Lists!!

Speaking of which, I URGE that the Gift of Acceptance be given to Francine Niyonsaba, Margaret Wambui, and especially Caster Semenya that they do NOT belong in WOMEN's races--and that they be gifted THEIR OWN race---with respect to their person's & humanity itself!
And that ALL their past Marks and Results be ERASED--and their Medals redistributed!

For the writers & movie-makers, I provide the gifts of Memoirs & Movies from many Elite T&F athletes!!
And if they have a NOVEL (about T&F) just bursting to be set free....!!!

I also provide the gifts of new PRINT editions of the FAST & Athletics Annuals, as well as the 2019 edition of Jack Shepard's HS Track (which comes out in December--I just received my 2018 edition!!).
Also wouldn't mind the gift of UPDATED versions of the "World's Greatest in Athletics" & "National Records for All the Countries of the World" books!

While I would love for EVERYONE to break Records & to run fast in 2018, specially-marked gifts are being sent to those----
trying to break the HSR in the OUTdoor Women's Mile (4:35.24)
going for the first sub-4:10 Mile for Women

But the GRINCH in me ACHES for no more FAKE & ILLEGAL & FARCICAL tries at the sub-2 Hour Marathon for Men!!
(Though I'd love to see new WR's in both the Men's and Women's Marathon!!)
Oh yeah--it is BAH! HUMBUG!! to the Beer Miles & Nitro Games & other "Animal House-frat" shit this sport has created!!

However, I wouldn't mind seeing a NUDE Mile or 2 or 3!!
LOL

In this post-Jessica Ennis-Hill & Brianne Theisen & Ashton Eaton year, I give the gift to EVERY elite Multi's performer to be healthy & in shape for the greatest-ever Heptathlon & Decathlon (& INdoor Hept & Pentathlon) competitions!!

I bequeath the gift of a FANTASTIC Commonwealth Games in 2018!!

For RUSSIA, I order Santa to re-instate this fine Country to the Order of World Nations--free of condemnation, guilt, or humiliation!
And for the ridiculous notion of calling their athletes "neutrals" be forever eliminated from our minds & hearts!

Not to mention seeing the return to Pole Vaulting for Yelena Isinbayeva---one more time!!

And how about the most special gift of FORGIVENESS & APOLOGY be handed to Justin Gatlin---after the HORRID display of BOOING he suffered in London in 2017??!!

While we're (sort of!) on the subject, how about the gift of a NEW Usain Bolt!!

I offer the gift of Track 10000's for High School Women and Men!
With all the Top runners appearing!!
At Arcadia, Payton Jordan, or NBN??

Last, but absolutely NOT least---
the gift of LIFE & HEALTH & ELITE-level RACING for---
Gabrielle (Gabe) Grunewald!!

May 2018 be THE gift on YOUR gift list!!

Merry Christmas--Everyone!

Numbers, Numbers & Numbers

It's been a quiet week, and will continue to be until the very end of the year!
I do have a few results, and some news items, but this post is more a review of some numbers from the 2017 OUTdoor season!!
We are close enough now to December 31st for me to predict that we'll see few, if any, revisions to my OUTdoor Record Book.
So it's time to begin my wrap-ups of the OUTdoor season!
Before I begin, I'll report the results and news stuff I have!

Cory McGee just ran the fastest-ever Mile in the month of December!
At the 2nd BU Mini-Meet, she ran 4:27.67, defeating the field by 10 seconds (CeAira Brown was 2nd in 4:37.89!).
McGee is now 18th A-T US!

The Men's Mile was also fast--won by Hamish Carson in 3:57.94.
Second was Brian Schrader in 4:01.13.

Also at the BU, a 24 year old New Zealander--Julian Oakley--dominated the 3000 by winning in 7:44.34, a very good early season time!
Lauren Paquette took the Women's 3K in 9:02.99.

At a Texas PV meet, KC Lightfoot improved his INdoor PR to 17-6, moving him from 16th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 12th, tied with 2 others!
Morgann LeLeux's younger sister--Reagann, a HS Senior--cleared 13-3, the season's first 13 footer!

Moving OUTdoors, Ken Bekele wanted the 25K Road WR, but he fell far short, nonetheless running a good 1:13:48.
25K is approximately 15.6 Miles, so he probably passed the Half-Marathon point close to 61:30!
The Women's race went to Dejitu Azimeraw's 1:26:01.

Sally Pearson ran a quick flat 100--11.17 (2.0)--winning easily!

Now I've got some HUGE news for you!!

Katelyn Tuohy will be going for the HSR in the 5000 on January 20th at the Virginia Showcase meet!!
There's a Let's Run thread predicting her time--and they range from just breaking the 15:55 by Brie Oakley to running 15:30!!
BTW, I've also said she's capable of 15:30!!
It will depend on her health, but also the pace--meaning her competition!
If Kelsey Chmiel joins her, and maybe 2 or 3 others, she can do it!!
She'll be running a 3000 on December 30th in the Ocean Breeze, the same meet where Kate Murphy opened with a 9:14 last year!
I'm VERY excited about this!!

The Boston Marathon has the best American elite field EVER!!
For the Women--
Shalane Flanagan
Molly Huddle
Des Linden
Sara Hall
Jordan Hasay
Serena Burla
Kellyn Taylor
Deena Kastor!

The Men will have Galen Rupp, Abdi Abdirahman, Dathan Ritzenhein, Andy Bumbalough, Ryan Vail, and Shadrack Biwott!!

Finally, Ruby Stauber has transferred from LSU to the University of Oregon--her eligibility effective immediately!!

Now for some NUMBERS!!!

The core group Records Dept saw a bit of action OUTdoors this year, but nowhere near the 61 Records broken during 2017 INdoors!!

Women broke 35 Records, while the Men got just 10--for a total of 45!
Joyciline Jepkosgei nabbed SEVEN of them, all on the Roads, and all WR's!
(30:05, 45:37, 61:25, 64:52, 14:33, 29:43, and 64:51)
Other WR's went to Mary Keitany (1:19:43 & 1:36:05) and Ajee Wilson (1:22.39)!
The Men got just 1 WR--Wayde Van Niekerk's 30.81.

US Records went to Wilson (the 600 and her 1:55.61), Gwen Berry (251-10), Emma Coburn (9:02.58), and Swedish Relay (1:35.69).
No Men's AR's!!

Collegiate Records fell to UO (42.34, 42.12, 1:28.78, 3:39.05, and 3:23.13), Raevyn Rogers (1:59.10), Texas A&M (3:39.04), LSU (42.12), Kyra Jefferson (22.02), and Maggie Ewen (240-7).
The Men got a few--Lindon Victor (8472 & 8539), Texas A&M (3:11.94), Fred Kerley (43.70), and Christian Coleman (9.82).

Mondo Duplantis got 3 HSR's (18-6.50, 19-0.25 & 19-4.25), while American Fork (UT) got the 4XMile (16:41.30)!!
HS Women got several--Sydney McLaughlin (38.90, 54.03, and 53.82), Alyssa Wilson (57-1.25 & 58-1), Brie Oakley (9:51.35), Parkview Express (1:52.39), Union Catholic (2:05.93), and Lauren Harris (6:17.20).

Candace Hill got the HS PRO mark of 52.70!

How many Top 24 A-T Performers lists were changed during the 2017 OUTdoor season---meaning the mark necessary to get 24th place?

HS Men saw 14 changes--100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, Mile, 2 Mile, 110H, 400H, PV, SP, DT, HT, and Heptathlon!
HS Women got 16--200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 2 Mile, 5000, 100H, 400H, LJ, TJ, PV, SP, DT, JT, and HT!!

Collegiate Men changed in the 100, 200, 800, 1500, 5000, 400H, SP, HT, Decathlon, 4X100, 4X400, and the DMR--a total of 12.
The Women changed in 16 events--100, 200, 400, Mile, 10000, 3000SC, 100H, HJ, LJ, SP, DT, JT, HT, Heptathlon, 4X100, and the DMR!

US changes for the Women numbered 15--100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, Mile, 3000, 2 Mile, 10000, Half & Full Marathon, 3000SC, TJ, SP, and the JT!
Men's alterations came in the 100, 200, 400, 1000, Mile, 3000, 10000, 3000SC, 400H, SP, and the Decathlon.
Men totaled 11.

The World lists saw the smallest number of changes!
The Men got just 6--100, 400, 1500, 3000, SP, and the DT!
The Women got 10--200, Mile, 5000, 3000SC, 400H, HJ, PV, JT, HT, and the Heptathlon!

Totals were---
Men (43)
Women (57)

I'll do a final count on December 31st, but as of a month or so ago, the DDD's have 362 marks dated 2017 (OUTdoors).
World (Men, 27--Women, 48)
US (Men, 31--Women, 62)
Collegiate (Men, 42--Women, 66)
HS (Men, 39--Women, 47)
Men have 139, while the Women number 223!

What years have the most Place Records??
For the Men--
2012 (36)
2011 (23)
2016 (19)
2015 (16)
2014 & 1996 (11)
1999 (10)
2017, 2013, 2007, 2000 (9)
1997 & 1988 (7)
2001, 2006, 2004 (6)
The Least??
1992 with ONE!!

For the Women--
2016 (31)
2017 (28)
2012 & 2014 (19)
2015 & 1988 (17)
2008 (13)
2007 (9)
2009 (8)
1997 (7)
1996 & 2011 (6)
Least goes to 1979, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1999, and 2000--all with a single mark!!

Next up are National Records!
Counting only one NR per event, here are the event leaders!!
The Men's SP have 6 new NR's!
With 4 apiece are the 110H and the JT.
Three each for the 200, 400, 1500, 10000, 400H, and the PV!
The Women saw TEN 3000SC NR's broken!!
The Heptathlon got 7.
The PV has 6.
Five for the 800.
The JT has 4.
With 3 apiece are the 100, 200, 3000, Marathon, and DT!

The totals are 44 for the Men, and 67 for the Women!
I should mention that my NR collection does NOT cover EVERY National Record!
While I don't have the restrictions of the past (See an earlier post!), I still have a cut-off point--although it's still arbitrary!
There were LOTS more NR's in 2017, but the above are the ones I carry in my Record Book!

Which were the best Meets for Meet Records broken??
Leading the way was the TrackTown Summer Series!
However, that series of meets should NOT be counted on my list, as there were 3 meets this year, and just 1 in 2016.
Also, new events got automatic MR's, and there were several of those!

So the leaders in the MR Dept are--
For the Men--
Pan Am Juniors (6)
NBN (5)
SEC, Rabat DL, Lausanne DL, and Ostrava (4)
With 3 each are USATF and the Birmingham DL!

For the Women--
NBN (7)
Pan Am Juniors (6)
Texas Relays, ACC, PAC-12, and Hengelo (4)
With 3 each are the Pre, London, and Lausanne DL's, PTF, NCAA, USATF, and the USATF Juniors.

The totals were--
Men (66)
Women (85)
(These totals include the 9 TTSS MR's broken for the Men, and the 7 there for the Women!  Without that meet, the Men had 57, while the Women got 78!)

Then there are the Age Records!

The Men saw 22 fall, while the Women got 32!
For the Men, the TJ (Ages 17, 26, and 40) and JT (23, 24, 25) lead the way!
The Women saw 5 Age Records fall in the 3000SC (18, 20, 21, 25, 26)!
Four fell in the Mile (26, 27, 29, 30)
Three apiece went down in the Half-Marathon (23, 26, 35) and 400H (17, 22, and 27).

Moving back INdoors, my count of November & December marks making my DDD's increased from 15 to 17, with the addition of McGee's & Lightfoot's marks (See above!).
There very likely will be more!!

I MIGHT have another post or 2 before my December 31st OUTdoor AOY posts for the World & US!
But if not, have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah!

See you soon!

Powerful INdoor Start Continues (& Footlocker)

I have the numbers!
I've often told my readers that X, Y, or Z INdoor season is off to its "fastest start" or "best beginning" ever!
But here are the facts--
In the time from the 1st "significant" meet (usually the JDL meets in November) through to December 31st, my records show that we saw 11 List-making (meaning any of my 4 INdoor core group DDD's) marks in 2014.
There were just 3 in 2015.
2016 saw a rebound to 12.
And thus far, 2017 (the 2017-2018 INdoor portion of the year!) has seen FIFTEEN marks make my lists!!
(With some good December meets yet to come!!)

Leading the way are a pair of A-T High School greats, but now Collegiate Frosh!
In their very first Collegiate races, Sydney McLaughlin and Samantha Watson showed why going Pro straight out of HS would NOT have been a bad decision!!

McLaughlin ran 300 meters in 36.12, while Watson ran the 1000 in 2:42.12
For Syd, it's the World Age 18 record!
She is 2nd A-T Collegiate!
And 6th A-T World!
She moves from 16th A-T US to 2nd!
Of course, she gets the Frosh Class record also!

For Watson, she too claims the Frosh Class record.
She is 7th A-T Collegiate!
And she beat Jazmine Fray's 2:45.81 by 3.69 seconds!
Please remember that Watson's HSR of 2:40.72 is FASTER than Kaela Edwards's 2:40.79 Collegiate Record!!
Oh yes, she also ran a leg on Texas A&M's 4X400 Relay!!

But INdoors has lots more to offer here!
And once again--to save space--I'll present it by event groups.

Sprints & Hurdles
Jazmine Camacho-Quinn was 2nd to McLaughlin, running 37.91.
This makes her 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other.
She also ran the 60H in 8.04, missing her PR by just 0.02 seconds!
Javianne Oliver has the fastest flat 60 so far--7.17--after a 7.21 in her heat!
The 300 attack spread to the Men too!
Dwight St Hilaire--from Trinidad--ran 32.83, making him 5th A-T Collegiate!
Second was Nathan Strother's 33.16, which makes him 14th A-T Collegiate!
In a speedy 4X400 Relay, Texas A&M opened with a 3:07.03.
They beat an "unattached" squad, who ran 3:07.80, thanks to Bralon Taplin's 45.00 2nd leg!!

Middle & Long Distances
I don't have any lists for the 500 meters, but I know a fast time when I see it!
Daniel Kuhn ran it in 1:01.35, fairly fast for a Collegiate!
On an Oversize Track--NOT eligible for lists, even if I had them!--Brycen Spratling ran 1:01.68.
Donavan Brazier opened with his first sub-4 Mile--a 3:59.30!!
He beat Leo Manzano's 4:03.49!
Brazier also ran a 46.00 leg on A&M's 4X400 team--See above!
A couple of 5K's round out this group--
Ben Veatch--a Redshirt Frosh--ran 13:57.27.
And Katherine Receveur added a 15:48.10 to the roster of 15:50-or-faster December 5000's this year!

Field Events (& Multi's)
I'll begin with an update!
The 5998 Heptathlon by Hunter Veith--reported in an earlier post--makes my Collegiate list!
He is 18th A-T Collegiate!
(BTW, TFRSS reports the mark as 6023, but I'm guessing this is because of their "formula", which changes marks made on flat or Oversize tracks!  As far as I know, this was NOT on an OT!!)
Continuing with the Multi's---
Jordan Gray--a Senior at Kennesaw State--scored 4198 in the Pentathlon!
She beat Nina Schultz's 4083!

The PV is starting relatively slowly, but Kristen Hixson made it over 14-2.
Olivia Gruver cleared 14-1.25.
Carson Dingler opened her Collegiate career with a 13-9.25 effort!
Did I forget to mention she's matriculating at Demi Payne's Alma Mater--Stephen A Austin??

Brenton Foster has the best HJ so far--7-4.25.
Kyle Landon has a 7-3, while Priscilla Frederick has a jump of 6-0.75!
Jyles Etienne matched Landon's 7-3, but in a different meet.
Marie Josee Ebwen-Bile has the best TJ--a 44-8.75!
She misses my Collegiate list by 0.75 inches!!

The Throws saw Stamatia Scarvelis open with a good set of marks.
Her 58-3.75 SP misses my Collegiate DDD by 1 inch!
She added a WT of 69-0.75!
Annette Echikinwoke's 75-11.50 WT moves her from 12th A-T Collegiate up to 8th!!
Gabrielle Figueroa threw the WT 68-9.25.
Ashinia Miller had a SP of 66-1.50.
But I'm most interested in what the HS'ers of 2017 (meaning last season's 2017!!) are doing as Collegiate Frosh!
Adrian "Tripp" Piperi opened with a decent 60-6.
But Gabe Oladipo reached only 55 and change!
Nick Vena shot (Sic!!) up to 67-0 at Princeton.
Jeneva Stevens doubled with a SP of 59-10.50, and a WT of 76-5.75--which isn't a PR!

Now on to XC and the Roads!!

Footlocker had a pair of great races.
Yet the mind boggles at what COULD have been--if FL's groups of 40's had combined with NXN's more extensive roster of HS stars in ONE race (or 2, one for each gender)!!
Imagine Claudia Lane's runaway Footlocker win being set against Katelyn Tuohy's mind-bender at NXN!

Anyway, Lane took the lead from the gun---just like Tuohy!--and won by 19 seconds with her 17:03.4.
She'd become ill a few days earlier, and there were several fires in SoCal which might have affected her, so her attempt at a Course Record fell 24 seconds short!
Katelynne Hart DID double--repeating her podium finish at NXN with a 2nd here.
Her 17:22.5 barely nipped Olivia Theis at the line!
There was a 16 second gap back to Katherine Lee's 4th.
And another 6 seconds back to Jacqueline Gaughan's 17:44.6 in 5th.
Ana Wallace (17:48), Tierney Wolfgram (17:52), and Sarah Schmitt (17:57) rounded out the top 8.
Other top names---
Emily Covert was 9th in 17:59
Marlee Starliper finished 13th in 18:04
Heather Holt's 18:48 took 31st
Rebecca Story had some sort of problem, as this speedster ended just 34th--in 19:03!

The Men's race was MUCH tighter!!
A large group meandered through the first mile, before getting split up.
A trio of Daniel Kilrea, Graydon Morris, and Dylan Jacobs opened a small gap, which widened as the race progressed.
Playing cat-and-mouse--this went on until Jacobs decided to test the waters!
His surge passed the test with flying colors!!
His 15:19.7 beat Morris by 3.6 seconds.
Kilrea--who some thought was the favorite here--was 3rd in 15:27.3.
But John Tatter was right on his shoulder, his 15:27.9 taking 4th!
Then came Jake Renfree (15:38.7), Carter Cheeseman (15:41), Drew Bosley (15:42), and Drew Thompson (15:43) to round out the top 8.
Other notables included---
Mechaal Beaudoin-Rousseau in 21st (16:01)
Dalton Hengst in 24th, time of 16:08

The European XC Championships saw a few NCAA finishers do well!
The U20 category saw Harriet Janes-Knowles win in 13:48.
(Don't have the distances, but they were NOT the usual 5, 6, or 8 & 10K's!)
Hungary's Lilli Toth finished 2nd to the Brit, time of 13:59.
The Men's U20 was dominated by Jakob Ingebrigtsen's 18:39.
Second was Ramazan Barbaros of Turkey.

The U23's saw a German pair duke it out!
Alina Reh's 20:22 prevailed over Konstanze Klosterhalfen's 20:25!
Further back came Jessica Judd's 20:45 in 3rd, with Washington's British Senior--Amy Eloise-Neale-- claiming 4th in 20:59.
Another NCAA star--Weronika Pyzik of Poland--was 8th in 21:18.
The Men's U23 was won by Jimmy Gressier in 24:35.
He beat fellow Frenchman Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse's 24:43.
The latter also ran the NCAA's!!

The Senior races were won by Kaan Ozbilen and Yasmine Can, both of Turkey!
Ozbilen's 29:45 beat Spain's Adel Mechaal's 29:54.
GB's Andy Butchart ended 3rd in 30 minutes flat!
Henrik Ingebrigtsen was 11th, time of 30:19!!

Can's 26:48 whipped Meraf Bahta's 27:03.
Close in tow came Karoline Grovdal's 27:04, with NCAA stud Charlotte Taylor taking 4th in 27:23.

The USATF Club XC Championships had a decent group of entrants.
The Men's race went to former NCAA Division III stud Ian La Mere's 29:10.
He ended 2 seconds in front of Emmanuel Bor!
Another pair of seconds back came Ryan Mahalsky, while Trevor Dunbar could only get 7th, time of 29:32!

The Women's race went to Sarah Pagano, time of 19:40.
She beat Chelsea Blaase's 19:49, and Olivia Pratt's 19:50.
In 5th came Emily Lipari's 19:55.
But former Wisconsin star Rachele Schulist finished just 34th, time of 20:48!

Finally, we travel to the sunny climes of Hawaii!!
In the Merrie Mile--a race held a day before the Honolulu Marathon--the Women got a 26 second headstart--with the Men trying to catch them!
With Edward Cheserek in the field, that seemed a foregone conclusion!
And yes, he indeed passed 18 year old Kenyan Mirriam Cherop before the tape to claim the overall prize!!
His REAL time was 3:58.1, this being just his 2nd Pro race--both Road Miles!!
Far back was Will Leer's 4:02.4.
Nick Willis ran 4:03.6 in 3rd, with Mason Ferlic's 4:05.4 taking 4th.

Cherop's REAL time was a quick 4:24.9--keeping in mind her age!!
Leer's wife--the former Aisha Praught--was 2nd, but over 7 seconds back, time of 4:31.9.
Nicole Sifuentes was close in 3rd, time of 4:32.2.
Jamie Morrissey--Ferlic's girlfriend!--was 4th in 4:35.9!!

The Marathon itself saw BOTH Course Records fall!!
Lawrence Cherono's winner was 2:08:28.
Brigid Kosgei's 2:22:12 destroyed the fomer CR by 5 or 6 minutes!!

Oh, almost forgot!
Nick Symmonds--perhaps better known as a 1:42.95 800 guy--tried the 26.2 Mile race for the 1st time!
His LONGEST training run was 15 miles!
He was rarely AT 50 miles a week, and mostly WELL under that!!--in his "build-up" to this monster distance!!
BUT---
he negative split a VERY decent time of 3:00:35---when many (myself included!!) thought he'd have strong odds to become a DNF!!
His splits were 1:31:17 and 1:29:18!!

Will he do another??

I can't forget to mention that legendary High School Track and Cross Country coach Joe Newton died on December 9th at age 88!!
He either coached, mentored, or "just" greatly inspired & influenced many runners who went on to greater glory!
His reputation reached far beyond the borders of Illinois--or even the United States!!
He is missed.

Next weekend has another BU Mini-Meet!!
Will the 5000 lists be changed again??

See you soon!

Of Babies & Snakes--A Book Review

The title of this post will explain itself in due time, but first I must offer a disclaimer.---

I ordered one copy of Stuart Kantor's book "18 Months Raising the Bar"--and received two!
He'd told me beforehand, so it wasn't a shock, but I just wanted to let you know.
Both copies were autographed by the book's protagonists--Demi Payne and Sandi Morris--but they'd autographed many copies, I believe.
I want to make it clear that the following review has not been influenced in any way by this generosity!
I feel totally free to tell the TRUTH about how I feel about this book.

18 Months Raising the Bar in Women's Pole Vault
by Stuart Kantor
Book Review
by Aaron Krohn

I remember that weekend well.
As a blogger whose core focus is on Records & Marks in Track & Field--and who compiled a 600 page T&F Record Book over 40 years ago (continually revised)--I was super excited to see the Collegiate Record in the Women's Pole Vault broken not once, but twice within one day--by two women in 2 separate venues.
Rare are Major Records broken--especially in mid-January--and even rarer do you see THAT Record broken AGAIN just hours later!!

But that's how Kantor's book begins--with a fully detailed account of both Records!
Every height, every attempt, every emotion.

As I read on from there, I was reminded of Frank Murphy's book "The Silence of Great Distance", published in 2000.
That book was about distance runners of the female gender.
It had beautifully written descriptions of running, the flow & rhythm of the sport, followed by a History of Women's Middle & Long Distance running.
It too focused on two Women--Stephanie Herbst & Kathy Ormsby.
On their whole careers, from High School on, but especially their time competing in College!

"18 Months" does the same for the Women's PV!
In fact, this History doesn't just cover the modern era, the "elite" Women's Vault only being known from the late-90's on, but goes back to 3370 B.C., to ancient Ireland's Tailten Games!
It moves forward in chronological order to this time, where we've seen Women literally fly over bars set at 13, then 14, then 15, and now 16 feet above Mother Earth!
It names all the names, such as Emma George and Stacy Dragila, and Yelena Isinbayeva.

But it wasn't until 2014 that Kaitlin Petrillose "raised the bar" of Women's Collegiate PV'ing to the level of 15 feet.
Entering 2015, Petrillose's 15-1 was the INdoor Record for Collegiate Women!
However, Tina Sutej was the first over 15 as a Collegiate, doing so OUTdoors in 2011.
But even in the latter case, it wasn't until Sandi Morris went over 15-1.75 that we saw another Collegiate Woman over that barrier.

And that's why having TWO Women soar over such a height--in the space of just 17 hours--was so special!

And it didn't end there!
For the next year and a half, these 2 Women made 15 feet a near every-competition occurrence!
By INdoor season's end , they'd separated themselves from their competition by almost a full foot!
And OUTdoors 2015 was the same!
There too, no other Collegiate Woman could reach 15 feet even once, let alone multiple times!

Yet it wasn't just their amazing rise to the top in Pole Vaulting that the author describes.
It's their personal history, their different, but fascinating personalities, their unique paths to the Pinnacle, what motivated them, who inspired them, what PV'ing MEANS to these Women!

One (Morris) loves snakes--and all kinds of other creatures!
The other (Payne) gave birth to a daughter (Charlee) early in life (while in her 1st College).

One has long blonde hair!
The other's is wavy & brunette.

Both are fairly tall (Payne is over 6 feet!), muscular, yet lithe and "feminine".
Both are gregarious and outgoing, flashy and funny, and filled from head to toe with a very special talent--to race down a runway holding a pole equal in length to the heights they wanted to top, then planting it in a hole, stretching their bodies as the pole bends almost at a 90 degree angle, then pushes their bodies over the bar set at heights only imagined by the event's modern pioneers!!

This 205 page book (It was initially promoted as having 192 pages!) has several photos--in color!
At book's end, there's a complete listing of their many accomplishments--their Marks & Records, but also their many Awards!
(This is similar to other biographical books about T&F athletes--See "Pre!" by Tom Jordan!)
And the book generally is presented chronologically, so it's easy to follow--and made as exciting as it was following their friendly battles through 18 months of back-and-forth Record-breaking, INdoors, then OUTdoors, and back again in 2016, finally ending at the 2016 Olympic Trials!

Is this book perfect!
(Hint: NO book is "perfect", not even the "Classics"!  IMHO!)

As a writer (of 52 years standing) myself, my pet peeve is seeing sloppy grammar, misspelled words, and poor editing in books that DO otherwise SEEM perfect!
I must state that there ARE typographical mistakes in the book.
For example, on pages 67-68, Petrillose's attempts at the metric heights of 4.46 and 4.56 are BOTH said to be 14-11.50!
4.46 is 14-7.50 in English measure, while it's 4.56 that is the same as 14-11.50!
In a book about a sport which DEPENDS on accuracy to the nth degree, such errors are egregious!!
Better editing would have caught those errors before going to print!

Also, while the photos are wonderful, they are too small.
There are a couple of photos of their progression charts in some competitions--the "x's & o's" you see for misses or makes!
But I had to use a magnifier to be able to read the numbers.
(I don't think it was due to my poor eyesight!  LOL)
Full page photos would have been nicer!

Bottom line is--Buy & Read this book!!
Not only do you get History, but too, some very interesting accounts of the towns where they were raised (Morris in Greenville SC, Payne in New Braunfels TX).
There are transcripts of interviews they've done, written out in Q&A style.

It's a well-presented, colorful & (at times) poetically written account of a truly Historic era in Women's Pole Vaulting!

Sandi Morris and Demi Payne are beautiful Women (inside & out) who dominated their event over a long period of time, who (literally) rose to the top while building a fierce (& friendly) rivalry which makes T&F such a great sport.
And breaking Records at such a pace as to make this Record Keeper's fingers cramp, trying to keep up with all the changes this dynamic pair brought to the Women's Collegiate (& in Sandi's case, to the Professional level) Pole Vault!

This is well-worth a read!

Post-Thanksgiving No Turkey

Nowhere near!!
Apologies for the PUN-nishing title, but it's accurate!!
The past 10 days post-Thanksgiving have been incredible!
From HS Cross Country courses leading to NXN & Footlocker, to the NXN Championships, to the first really serious weekend of the 2017-2018 INdoor Track & Field season, the results were the best I've seen through this early early date!

Which gives this blog the chance to do what this blog does best--report the results in detail!
Hang on to your hats!!

The Manchester Road Race, that 4.748 Mile Road race where last we saw Mary Cain compete (She DNF'ed with an injury last year at about 2.5 miles, and didn't run it this year!), leads things off!

Chris Thompson led most of the way, but it was the hard kick of Paul Chelimo that won the race, time of 21:32.
Kirubel Erassa was 2 seconds back, with Thompson another pair back in 3rd!
Hassan Mead ended 4th in 21:42, one second ahead of Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell!

For the Women, it was another elbows-entwining sprint finish for Molly Huddle--except this time she came out on the short end!!
Buze Diriba was given a time one second faster than Huddle--23:57 to 23:58--but let me tell you--it was a virtual TIE!!
Further back in 3rd came newbie Pro Molly Seidel.
Her 24:14 finished 2 seconds in front of Eilish McColgan, with Des Linden far removed in 5th, time of 24:58.

Speaking of turkeys, the best Turkey Trot race was the one in Silicon Valley near San Francisco!
And King Ches--Edward Cheserek, the newly sponsored Pro--used his standard kick to take his first Professional race, time of 13:38 on the 5K course!
His margin was 4 seconds over another uniquely-spelled (!!) name--Awet Ghebrezghiabher (!!!!), with Emmanuel Bor next in 13:43.

Gotytom Gebrelase nailed the Women's race in 15:38.
Monicah Ngije ran 15:44 in 2nd, with Emily Lipari (16:04) and Sarah Pagano (16:09) next!

There were several Regional races leading up to the NXN--and next week's Footlocker meet!

The NXN New York race saw Katelyn Tuohy display her SuperStar creds in full blossom, as she destroyed the field by 62.9 seconds!!!
Her time was 17:01, but it was the MARGIN of victory that showed why she's the prime candidate to dominate HS distance running in the coming season(s)!!
Garrett Brennan's 15:54 easily beat Tyler Berg's 16:00 for the Men's title!

The Northeast races went to Julia Robitaille in 18:25 over Maggie Donahue's 18:35--and to Chris Romero's 15:56 prevailing over Liam Conway's 16:02.

The Southeast Men's race went to the dominant figure (both in talent and hair!!) of Brodey Hasty.
His 14:36 won by 22 seconds over Sam Affolder's 14:58.
Lydia Olwere won the Women's race, 17:21 to Sasha Neglia's 17:27!

The other HS Regionals were all for Footlocker!

The Midwest races went to Olivia Theis and Daniel Kilrea.
Theis's 17:13 won over Katelynne Hart's 17:17.1 and Emily Covert's 17:17.4!!
Kilrea's 14:53 had an easier time of it, as Zach Kraft finished 12 seconds back!

The Northeast wins went to Marli Starliper and Tristan Shelgren.
Starliper's 17:47 beat Katherine Lee's 17:50, and Jacqueline Gaughan's 17:54.
Shelgren's 15:33 beat Damien Dilcher by 4 seconds.

The South FL Regional saw Rebecca Story run 17:24 to beat Victoria Starcher by 4 seconds, with Ana Wallace running the same 17:28 time in 3rd.
John Tatter took the Men's division in 14:55, beating Michael Phillips by 4 seconds, with Graydon Morris another 6 seconds back in 3rd.

The California State meet had several races.
Rylee Bowen took one of them in 18:17.9--even though she was just 37th when all the races were combined!
Justin Hazell won the main Men's race in 15:03.8.
Colin Fitzgerald was 2nd in 15:10.1.

But it was the featured Women's race where Claudia Lane made distance fans drool at the prospect of a Claudia Lane & Katelyn Tuohy showdown!!
Won't happen this year, however, as Tuohy ran the NXN, while Lane will run Footlocker!
(Showing the need for a ONE RACE National Championship!!)
Anyway, Lane's 16:30.3 won by a whopping 79.3 seconds!!!

At the Footlocker West Regional, Lane again was--err--dominant!
Her 16:59.6 won by a piddly SEVENTY TWO seconds!!!
It was a Course Record by 15 seconds!!
(Kashan Harris took the Men's race in 15:38.4!)

NXN itself was One for the Ages!!
(Rather, TWO for the Ages!!)

The Men went first--and it was livestreamed FREE!!!--and what a race it was!!
One guy went out fast, leading by 20-30 meters after a mile.
But he was soon gathered in by a flock of chasers.
That didn't last long, as a triad made up of James Mwaura, Liam Anderson, and favored Brodey Hasty opened a 10 meter gap at halfway.
They exchanged tiny leads, but all appeared to be running hard.
Aidan Troutner was another 15 meters off pace.
At the 800-to-go "bell", Hasty tried to move, but was contained by his rivals.
He wasn't looking like the sure winner prognosticators were saying he was!

Then, with a strong kick reminiscent of Alexa Efraimson's when she went past Elise Cranny and Sarah Baxter in the 2013 NXN--Aidan Troutner whipped Hasty by 2 seconds at the tape--15:03.83 to 15:05.88.
Anderson took 3rd in 15:07.54, while Mwaura faded to 15:12 in 4th!
Danny Kilrea was 5th in 15:14.5, with a 7 second gap back to Dustin Horter.

Other "names" included Khalid Hussein in 10th, Alex Maier in 14th, Sam Affolder in 23rd, and Carlos Carvajal in 32nd!
Purcellville--aka Loudoun Valley--Drew Hunter's old school!--won the team title with 89 points, beating Manlius's 159.

The WomEn's race was actually a WomAn race--and it wasn't even a race!!
It was The Katelyn Tuohy Show in all its startling glory!!

She was already in the lead before 400 meters went past!
And that lead grew like the fast-growing plant in the 1960 horror-comedy "The Little Shop of Horrors"!!
While the livestream showed more of the battle for second, it was the Sophomore Tuohy who made this a Historic and thrilling display of power, strength, elegant form, and a Prefontaine-style determination to make herself one of the All-Time Greats!
(Hint--She already IS!!)
Her 16:44.7 winner beat Katie Rainsberger's Course Record by 10 seconds!!
Rainsberger ran her time as a Senior!!
The margin over 2nd was a phenomenal 40 seconds!!
When you see who followed, you'll be even MORE astounded by Tuohy!!

Kelsey Chmiel--who ran 9:18.04 over 3000 meters for the OUTdoor Soph Class record last spring!!--did battle with Katelynne Hart for a good portion of the distance.
While Chmiel won that little war--time of 17:25--it wasn't Hart finishing 3rd!!
From a far back 4th, Californian Mariah Castillo sprinted into 3rd, time of 17:37!!
Hart's 17:41 was 4th, with Claire Walters and Brooke Rauber another 14 or 15 seconds back in 5th & 6th!
(Rauber was the top Frosh finisher!)

Other notables included---
SEVENTH GRADER Lauren Ping in 11th, time of 17:58.9!
(Sister Grace didn't make it here, as she fell ill before her Regional!)
Taylor Ewart (the Walker???) in 18th
London Culbreath in 31st
Lexy Halladay 40th
Emily Covert 77th
And in 107th & 108th came the OTHER 7th Graders (in a race of all HS'ers!!)--Sheridan and McKinley Wheeler--who just happen to be TWINS!!

BTW, Manlius took their 10th of 11 team titles (or was it 11th of 12??), with the same points total as the Men's winner--89.
North Naperville was a close 2nd--with 94 points!!

Footlocker has to really step up to match THIS!!

The December segment of this INdoor T&F season began with a----MEET CANCELLATION!!
The Dunamis meet--set MONTHS ago for December 1st & 2nd in Dallas--was SUPPOSED to open a glorious future of top-level Texas INdoor meets--to have maybe 2000 athletes at every level of the sport--from youth to HS to Collegiate to the Pro's!!

But on the very morning of the 1st day--HOURS before the 1st event--Fire Marshalls forced them to cancel, due to the track being too close to the seats--like right up against them!!

One maybe stupid--but very simple question---
WHY the FUCK did Dunamis's planners/organizers not KNOW there wasn't enough room for the track---AND know the Fire LAWS that subsequently shut down the entire operation??!!
Huh??
I can't HEAR you, you dumb idiots!!!

Okay, let Dunamis handle all the refunds (& hopefully lawsuits!!) & other detritus from their FAILURE!!
We have some VERY good T&F results to talk about!!

Karissa Schweizer had said she wanted to run a fast 5000 in Boston--IF she recovered from her 11th place finish at NCAA Cross Country!
And run fast she did!!

Her 15:17.31 was a PR, but more importantly, it beat the NCAA XC winner--Ednah Kurgat---who, while about 5 years older than Schweizer--also ran fast!!
In fact, I believe Schweizer now has run the fastest-EVER INdoor 5000 in the month of December!!

It doesn't change her place standings on my DDD's, as she remains 5th A-T Collegiate, and 9th A-T US!!
Kurgat's 15:19.03 makes her 6th A-T Collegiate!
(Schweizer sprinted past her on the last lap!!)
Weini Kelati was 3rd in 15:37.03, making her 15th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Sharon Lokedi also makes my list, as her 15:39.05 makes her 19th A-T Collegiate!!

Four others ran good times--
Grayson Murphy (15:44.45)
Alice Wright (15:46.85)
Elly Henes (15:49.29)
Lauren LaRocco (15:50.25)

The Men's race went to Julian Oakley's 13:49.55.
Emmanuel Rotich was 2nd in 13:52.15.

The BU meet saw a fast Women's 3000 also!
Elinor Purrier won with ease in 8:55.68!!
This makes her 10th A-T Collegiate!!
And it misses the US list by just 2.13 seconds!!
Heather MacLean was a good 2nd in 9:03.03.
It misses my Collegiate DDD by 1.87 seconds!
In 3rd came Millie Paladino--time of 9:05.10.
Cut OFF the Collegiate list was Wesley Frazier's 9:01.26 from last year!

Harvard's Gabrielle Thomas had a good meet at BU.
She led off with a 7.46 win in the 60.
Then she won the 300 in 37.47.
She misses the US list by 0.05 seconds.
But it makes her 10th A-T Collegiate on my abbreviated 300 list!

Grace Claxton was 2nd in 37.64, with Leah Fowlkes's 37.89 making that short 300 list as 17th A-T Collegiate!
The Men's 300 went to Myles Banfield in 33.62, with Cameron Nurse next in 33.71.

This post is fairly long, so I'm going to run the rest of the results by you in condensed form--by event group.

Sprints & Hurdles
Chad Zallow whipped through a 7.65 in the 60H!!
That's just 0.05 seconds removed from the Collegiate DDD!
At the JDL College Kick-Off Classic, Jaylen Mitchell (of NC A&T), sped a flat 60 in 6.65.

500-800
At the Fast Track meet in the Ocean Breeze, Byron Robinson ran 500 meters in 1:01.62.
Yonique Haye-Smith took the Women's race in 1:10.98.
Haig Rickerby ran a 600 in 1:19.03.
Cory McGee easily took an 800 in 2:05.51.
Marc Runes won the Men's 800 in 1:48.85.
In a good early season 1000 race, Charlene Lipsey beat Angel Piccirillo, 2:46.38 to 2:46.77.

Distances
Nicole Hutchinson ran 3000 meters in 9:19.23, beating Bella Burda's 9:28.24.
Both attend Villanova!

Field Events (& Multi's)
At the Wichita State meet, Hunter Veith scored 5998 points in the Heptathlon.
In an OUTdoor meet in Australia, Aussie (Sic!!) Celeste Mucci scored 5870 points, breaking the record of the best by an Australian teen!!
Brittany Crew SP'ed 59-7 for the National Record (INdoors) of Canada!
Nick Vena hit 65-7.50 in the SP.
At Vanderbilt, Joe Frye threw the WT 71-10.75!
Josh Davis hit a big one--76-3 for 20th A-T Collegiate!!
He misses the US list by just 0.75 inches!!

Maddie Gardner PV'ed 13-7.25.
She's a Junior at West Virginia.
Scott Houston went over 18-1 in the PV.
Alina McDonald's 14-5.25 beat Carolina Carmichael's 13-11.25!
In the HJ, two Men went over 7-2, with Jenn (??) Allen prevailing over Javon Reeves.

To the Roads!
Norway's Sondre Moen became the 2nd fastest non-African (Ryan Hall's 2:04:58 at Boston being Number One!) to run a sub-2:06 in the Marathon, winning Fukuoka in 2:05:48.
This of course is the National Record of Norway, and the fastest-ever by a European!!
Stephen Kiprotich was 2nd in 2:07:10, while Suguru Osako finished 3rd in 2:07:19.
Moen's splits were 63:19 and 62:29!
He has a Half PR of 59:47 from earlier this year!!

And in the Sacramento Marathon, held a few hours ago, Sara Hall led the whole way--in her 2nd Marathon in 5 weeks!!--winning in 2:28:10!!
(With her 2:27:21 in Frankfurt, she's taken down the myth that you can't run 2 fast Marathons in a short period of time--that you need to space them 6 months apart!!)
But this race also saw a decent gaggle of Women finish in the low-2:30's!!
Roberta Groner (2:30:37)
Carrie Dimoff (2:30:52)
Samantha Bluske (2:31:55)
Kaitlin Goodman (2:32:08)
Plus Janet Bowcom--2:35:19 in 7th--and Katie Matthews--2:38:39 in 17th (her 1st race at 26.2!!)

Parker Stinson--in HIS first Marathon, was 300 meters in front after a Half in 64:41!
He was on pace for a time just two seconds slower than what Galen Rupp ran to win Chicago!!
He continued to lead through at least 22 miles--but he was slowing--and the chase pack was gaining!

At mile 23 (or thereabouts), he had to stop for a bit--before finishing in a 7-plus minute per mile shuffle!
But he DID finish--in 30th (!!!), time of 2:18:07!
In first was Tim Ritchie, whose 2:11:53 was a 2+ minute PR!!
Tyler McCandless was 2nd in 2:12:28.

FINALLY--it's been announced that Yomif Kejelcha--one of the World's best at Age 20--has joined the Alberto Salazar-led Nike Oregon Project!!

Enough??
Thanks for your endurance!!
LOL

See you soon!!

2018 INdoor Records Predictions--WOMEN

As with the Men, my sole "rule" involves OT's--NO Oversize Track marks eligible for Records or Lists!!
See my Men's post for the rest of the intro junk!

World
The 60 WR of 6.92 seems inviolable!
If only more World Leaders would give it a go!
(NOT Presidents or Prime Ministers--just athletes with World Leading marks!!  LOL)
For this year, give it 10-90 odds.
The 200 WR of 21.87 gets 20-80 odds.
Forget the 400 mark of 49.59, but give the 35.45 WR for the 300 35-65 odds!
Rare is the World Class 500, but IF there's a RACE, give the 66.31 WR 40-60 odds!
If Ajee Wilson gives it a shot, the 600 WR of 1:23.44 is a goner!
85-15 odds for Ms Wilson!!
But reduce those to 60-40 if Ajee gives the 1:55.82 800 WR a shot!
A lot of these predictions are based on 2 things--A) opportunities, and B) the right athletes trying for a record!
IF Wilson or maybe Melissa Bishop run a 1000 hard, give the WR of 2:30.94 65-35 odds!

Hate to say it, but Genzebe Dibaba may NOT be the prime candidate for WR's in the distances this year!!
Ever hear of Helen Obiri, Faith Kipyegon, Almaz Ayana, or Laura Muir??
Not to mention 1 or 2 Americans!
The 3:55.17 and 4:13.31 for the 1500 & Mile are given 25-75 odds.
G-D's 2K mark of 5:23.75 needs the A & B from above!
Her 8:16.60 is a bit beyond the current crop--even Genzebe!!
But her Two Mile WR of 9:00.48 is worth an enroute 3K of about 8:27!
Give it 75-25 odds---IF!
The 5000 WR of 14:18.86 also needs the A & B from above!

Susan Kallur is NOT the World's best in the Hurdles!
So WHY is her 7.68 WR for 60H still alive??
There are SEVERAL strong candidates to bring that baby DOWN!!
Give it 65-35 odds!

Will the Great Russian get the WR of 6-9.75 in the HJ?
Give Mariya Lasitskene 80-20 odds!
Everyone else gets 20-80 odds!
Both of the Horizontals (24-2.25 & 50-4.75) are safe.
But watch for Yulimar Rojas to lead the charge in the latter!

IF all the "active" 16 footers ARE active (Hello, Demi Payne??), the WR of 16-6 could fall!
Could be another "Year of the Vault"!!
Push the SP mark of 73-10 to AD 3017!!
(And maybe not even then!  LOL)
Gwen Berry's WR in the WT--84-0--is from 2017!
Watch it fall again THIS year!!
There is no Euro Champs INdoors this year, and a 5014 WR in the World Championships is unlikely!!
Will Nafi Thiam & KJT be in Birmingham for a showdown?
If so, give that 5013 WR for the Pentathlon 35-65 odds!

As ever, the Relay WR's need the Usual Suspects for Records to happen!
The marks are 1:32.41, 3:23.37, 8:06.24, 3:45.90, and 10:40.31.
The SMR needs a pair of 200's in 24, a 400 of 54, then an 800 in under 2:04!
Easy!!

US
The 60 AR is 6.95.
Give it 10-90 odds!
But the 200 mark is 22.33.
70-30!
Ditto for the 35.71 for the 300, and the 50.46 in the 400!
The 500 mark is 67.34.
Give it 60-40 odds--IF there's a RACE!
See above for the 600 mark--which is 1:23.59 for the USA!
NOTE: I recognize Ajee Wilson's 1:58.27 as the 800 AR, despite USATF's non-ratification!!
And she can break it AGAIN!!
85-15 odds!
And 90-10 odds if she takes on the 1000 AR of 2:34.19!

The 3:59.98 and 4:20.5 for the 1500 & Mile ARE breakable!!
Give each 60-40 odds with all the components in sync!
That 2000 mark of 5:34.52 is ridiculously easy!!
Needs a Mile of about 4:28, with a 66 last 400!
The 3K mark of 8:33.25 is held by the NYC Marathon Champion--Shalane Flanagan!
Both Jenny Simpson and Shannon Rowbury have run faster OUTdoors!
Can they do the same INdoors??
Simpson has the Deuce AR of 9:18.35.
She can cut at least 10 seconds off of that if she wanted to!
Flanagan also holds the 5K AR of 14:47.62!
But most of the fast 5K's are run in December!
The next 31 days will tell!
25-75 odds!
The Marathon mark is 2:44:11.

Lolo Jones, Bobsledder, has the US record in the 60H--7.72.
See my World comments!

The HJ mark of 6-7.50 is safe!
But the LJ mark of 23-8.75 is given 35-65 odds--IF Tianna Bartoletta & Brittney Reese do battle!
The 46-11.75 AR in the TJ is by Keturah Orji!
She's done 48-3.25 OUTdoors!
75-25 odds!
Three of the four active (INdoors) 16 footers in the PV who could be competing in 2018 are Americans!
Nonetheless, give the 16-6 AR just 30-70 odds!
Will Raven Saunders give Michelle Carter a go-round for the 66-3.50 AR in the SP?
Give them 40-60 odds!
Yes, BOTH!!
Ms Berry returns to challenge her own AR (& WR!) in the WT!
Gone!!
Kendell Williams & Erica Bougard are now Professionals!
The AR in the Pentathlon is 4805!
20-80 odds!

The AR's in the Relays are 1:33.24, 3:24.83, 8:28.41, 3:45.90, and 10:40.31.
The 4X800 is the weakest!
Will anyone take a shot??

The Walk AR's are 5:54.31, 6:18.03, and 12:20.79!

Collegiate
Hannah Cunliffe is back (One of the few Oregon Ducks to NOT go Pro early!!), and might challenge her 60 CR of 7.07!
But she'll have to watch her back!
The 22.40 in the 200 SHOULD fall!!
Give both of the above 60-40 odds!
The 300 mark of 35.83 is safe--even if Sydney McLaughlin makes an attempt!
But if she (Or...???) gives the 50.46 in the 400 a go, give it 70-30 odds!

The 500 & 600 CR's are 68.40 & 1:26.56.
Both are vulnerable in the 60-40 range!
Especially with 600 HSR holder (at 1:27.13) Samantha Watson now a Collegian!!
"Sammy" might also challenge the 800 CR of 2:00.69!
Give her--and a few others--40-60 odds!
But, believe it or not, Watson's HSR 1000 time is FASTER than the Collegiate Record of 2:40.79--by 0.07 seconds!!
Give that one 95-5 odds!

The 1500 (4:09.77) and Mile (4:25.91) CR's could go!
The list of candidates is long!
But Jenny (Barringer) Simpson's 3K CR of 8:42.03 is tough!
Give it 15-85 odds!
Karissa Schweizer might break the 5000 CR SOON!!
Like in the first Boston University Mini-Meet this coming weekend!!
It's 15:12.22.
And she has some decent competition!!
Go for it, Ladies!!

The 60H mark of 7.78 gets 40-60 odds.
But the HJ mark of 6-6 is safe!
Not so much the LJ mark of 22-8!
Will one of THREE Georgia Bulldogs get it--Ms Orji, Kate Hall (still the HSR holder!!), or Frosh Tara Davis??
Give them (& others) 20-80 odds!
See above for the TJ record!
The PV mark is Ms Payne's 15-7--which is given a detailed account in the book "18 Months Raising the Bar"--a book I'm halfway through my initial reading!!
Will the newly-married Weeks twins take it down?
Give them (and maybe 5 or 6 others!) 40-60 odds!

Raven Saunders is now a Senior at Ole Miss!
Give her 70-30 odds of taking down her own CR of 64-2.25 in the SP!!
However, the WT mark of 83-10.25 doesn't have any viable candidates!!
And with Ms's Williams & Bougard now gone from the Collegiate ranks, nor does the Pentathlon & its 4703 CR!

The CR's in the Relays are 1:35.65, 3:27.03, 8:25.5, 3:52.25, and 10:48.77.

HS
Lanae Tava Thomas might give the 60 (7.19) and 200 (22.97) a go!
Especially the latter--so give that one 70-30 odds--the 60 just 30-70!
McLaughlin the Juggler is in College now, but Arria Minor (And??) might have a shot at her 400 HSR of 51.61!
But her 36.82 in the 300 is pretty safe!

Samantha Watson has THREE High School Records--the 600 (1:27.13), 800 (2:01.78), and 1000 (2:40.72)
Even though the "distances" are strong, the shorter distances are not!!
Unless one of the longer distance gals moves down!!
So give the 3 above just 15-85 odds!
BTW, the 500 HSR is 70.30!
Give that one 40-60 odds!

And then there are the FOUR HSR's by Mary Cain--now FIVE years old!!
Katelyn Tuohy, Kelsey Chmiel, London Culbreath, Claudia Lane, and maybe a handful of others!!
If THEY go head-to-head--at NBIN or Millrose/Boston--watch out!!
Ms Cain might have ALL of her INdoor HSR's erased!!
(Her INdoor Amateur HSR's, that is!  Her HS PRO marks will remain, as there are ZERO HS'ers gone Pro this year!!)
Then there's Brie Oakley's 15:55.75 in the 5000.
I'm giving the NBIN race its EIGHTH consecutive HSR in March!
But by WHOM???

The 60H mark of 8.02 should be safe, but give Tia Jones and others 30-70 odds anyway!
There are no HS High Jumpers anywhere near the HSR of 6-6.25!
0-100!
LTT might also challenge the LJ mark of 21-11.
Give it 35-65 odds!
The TJ mark of 44-6.75 has a couple of good ones--give it 35-65 odds also!
There are no 14 foot PV'ers back this year!
But that may not stop the 14-4 HSR from falling!
Give it 25-75 odds.

However, the best returning SP'er is a couple of feet below the 50 foot barrier!!
ZERO chance of the 57-5.50 HSR falling!
Give the 68-2.50 WT mark 20-80 odds.
Ditto the Pentathlon mark of 4068!

The Relay records are 1:35.86, 3:38.91, 8:53.67, 3:52.68, and 11:34.54.
Then there are the 4X1500 and 4 X Mile records of 18:50.91 and 19:59.24!

With Taylor Ewart evolved another year, give her 70-30 odds to take down the 1500 & Mile Walk HSR's of 6:17.59 and 6:53.44.

Well, friends, that's a wrap on my series of 2018 INdoor season Previews!!
Watch this blog for ALL the results worth noting throughout the entire INdoor season!!

See you soon!

2018 INdoor Records Predictions--MEN

This--and the following post, featuring the Women--are the last of my series of INdoor Previews for the 2017-2018 T&F INdoor season!
As always, these will be all about my 4 core groups--World, US, Collegiate, and HS.
I will say which Records I feel might be broken, their odds, and maybe a comment or two.
The main "rule" this blog lives by for INdoors is---NO Oversize Track marks accepted!!
This one is for the Men!

World
With Christian Coleman on the rise, the 60 WR of 6.39 just might have a chance!
40-60 odds.
Ditto with the 19.92 WR for the 200 (30-70), and the 300 mark of 31.87.
The latter has WR holder Noah Lyles as its front line attacker.
IF he runs it, 90-10 odds!
I've said it many times, but the 400 WR of 44.57 SHOULD fall, but it never does!
This year has many candidates, including Fred Kerley and Emmanuel Korir!
IF the right people run it, 80-20 odds!!
Same goes for the 500 mark of 59.83.
The 600 went wild last year.
Will it again?
The 1:14.91 WR is given 60-40 odds.
But despite Korir's presence (IF he runs INdoors!), give the 1:42.67 800 WR just 30-70 odds.
Same with the 2:14.20 WR for the single K.

The 1500 (3:31.18) & Mile (3:48.45) WR's CAN be beaten--but won't!
10-90 odds.
The 2K is rarely run, so the WR of 4:49.99 is safe!
The 7:24.90 3K WR is too tough for the jog-and-kick crowd that inhabits the distances nowadays!
And the 2 Mile doesn't see many opportunities--if any!
IF someone like Muktar Edris goes for it, give the 8:03.40 WR 60-40 odds!
The 5000 WR of 12:49.60?
You gotta be kidding!!
BTW, there IS an INdoor WR for the 10000--27:50.29.
With the Marathon being an INdoor event now, why not??
Speaking of which, the latter's WR is 2:21:48!!

NO for the 60H mark of 7.30!
Maybe never!!

I'm giving Mutaz Barshim 65-35 odds to take down the HJ's 7-11.50 WR!
The LJ mark of 28-10.25 WOULD have 40-60 odds--IF Luvo Manyonga competes INdoors!
But South Africans & Down Under athletes have their OUTdoor seasons during the INdoor season, so don't count on it!
Will the Taylor-Claye Act go on tour this INdoor season?
If so, give the TJ mark of 58-9.50 WR 40-60 odds.
The PV's 20-2.50 WR is safe--even from the WR holder himself!!
The SP's 74-4.25 was once thought impossible.
But with the current group of Throwers, give it 30-70 odds!
The 84-10.25 WR for the WT is a toughie, but give it 30-70 odds!
And because Mr Eaton is retired, and because the best Heptathletes are now European & Canadian, give the 6645 WR just 10-90 odds!

As always, Relays are hard to predict.
The WR's are 3:01.06, 7:13.11, 16:12.81, and 9:19.83.
The Distance marks have the best chance of falling---if GIVEN the chance!!

US
My 60, 300, and 400 predictions are the same as above, but the US 200 WR is 20.10--so give Lyles & Coleman 60-40 odds there!
The 500 AR is 1:00.06.
Kerley could challenge it!  65-35 odds if he does!
The US does have some candidates for the 600 mark--See above!
The US 800 record is 1:45.00, and the 1000 mark is 2:16.76.
Both are given 60-40 odds--IF the right people run it!
What kind of shape is Centro (Matthew Centrowitz) in?
The 1500 (3:33.34) and Mile (3:49.89) AR's CAN be his, but....!!
55-45 & 15-85 odds, respectively!
The 2K AR is 4:54.74--which basically is 3:58.74 for 1600, then a last 400 of 56!
IF there's a RACE, give it 60-40 odds!
The longer Distances (3000 of 7:30.16, Deuce of 8:07.41, and 5000 of 13:01.26) all get 25-75 odds!
Paul Chelimo??
BTW, that Marathon WR is by an American!

ZERO odds given to the 60H AR of 7.36!
Same for the 7-10.50 HJ mark, and the LJ mark--which is the same as the WR.
The AR in the TJ is LESS than the WR--58-3.25!
So give Mr's Taylor & Claye 60-40 odds here!
Sam Kendricks is THIS close to 19-9 (the AR in the PV).
Give him 55-45 odds of PR'ing in Record-breaking territory!!
See above for the SP & WT predictions!
NO for the Heptathlon!!

The AR for the 4X400 Relay is 3:01.96.
The distance Relay records are the same as the World's!
Ditto the chances!
The various Walk AR's are--5:38.2 (Mile), 11:16.3 (3K), 12:05.94 (Deuce), and for the 5000, 19:15.88.
All safe!

Collegiate
With Lyles & Coleman both Pro's now, it's NO for the 60 & 200 CR's of 6.45 & 20.10!
And with Kerley also gone, forget the 44.57 CR (& WR & AR!!) for the 400!
The 600 mark is 1:14.96, while the 800 & 1000 are 1:44.84 and 2:18.26.
The latter has a REAL chance--70-30 odds--but give the 600 just 40-60, and the 800 20-80!
Mr Cheserek graduated, and went Professional!
However, I still give his 3:37.01 and 3:52.01 CR's 30-70 odds!

The 3000 CR of 7:38.59 is given better odds (40-60) than the 5000 mark of 13:08.28 (5-95)!!
Grant Holloway is still in College!
Give the 60H mark of 7.45 better than half a chance of falling--IF he's healthy!

The HJ (7-9.25), LJ (28-2.25), and the TJ (57-5) have a snowball's chance etc etc!!
Even though there are NO Collegiate PV'ers with a 19-plus PR, give the 19-4.75 CR 25-75 odds!
(Chris Nilsen HAS that kind of potential!)
The SP mark of 71-3.50 is given 20-80 odds, but the WT Record of 83-11.25 jumps to 30-70!
Forget the 6499 CR in the Heptathlon!

The CR's in the Relays are 1:24.70, 3:02.52, 7:17.45, and 9:25.97.
IF run on LEGAL tracks, give them ALL half a chance--or better!

HS
While there ARE great HS marks scattered throughout the INdoor season, HSR's are mostly dependent on strong New Balance INdoor Nationals efforts, not to mention some decent candidates appearing there!
That said, give the 60 mark of 6.57 ZERO odds!
Because of Anthony Schwartz, Tyrese Cooper, and Brian Herron, especially Cooper, give the longer sprint marks of 20.63, 32.87, and 45.92 about 65-35 odds of dying!

The 600 mark of 1:17.58 could be a 48.6, with a final lap of just under 29 seconds tacked on!
Give it 60-40 odds--and 100-0 if Mr Cooper tries it!
What will Brandon Miller do--IF he races INdoors??
The 800 & 1000 marks of 1:49.21 and 2:22.28 could fall, if he runs them!
He may have a bit of company!!

The Mile saw most of the sub-4 candidates graduate!
And Brodey Hasty is mainly known for the longer distances!
So give Drew Hunter's HSR's of 3:41.93 & 3:57.81 ZERO odds!!

The question for Hasty is--Which distances will he run??
The 5000 mark by King Ches (13:57.04) would actually be given the BEST odds---IF Hasty gives it a real shot--probably at NBIN!
The 3K & 2 Mile HSR's of 7:59.33 and 8:39.15 have less chance, but give the Deuce 60-40, with the 3000 getting 30-70!

The 60H mark of 7.40 is safe!

The Horizontal Jumps (26-6.50 & 52-7.50) Records get 5-95 odds.
The HJ is slightly better--10% odds.
Then there's MONDO!!
Give him--ummm---1,000,000 to zero odds of taking down his 19-1 HSR!!
OK, maybe reduce that to just 99-1 odds!
LOL

The trio of A-T greats in the HS Shot Put have graduated!
So the 77-2.50 (& 68-4 for the 16 pounder) HSR is VERY safe!!
Forget the 93-3.25 WT mark!!
Until the 22nd century--if then!
(But the Pro WT mark of 65-8.25 gets 40-60 odds--if someone takes it on!!)
But give the 4307 HSR in the Pentathlon 70-30 odds, with Kyle Garland returning!!

The usual caveat is given all the Relay records--1:26.09, 3:13.06, 7:36.99, 17:07.17, 3:24.02, and 9:56.18.
They're all vulnerable, but they're all difficult too!
Flip a coin!

The Walk HSR for the Mile is 6:03.48.
It will remain as such another year!

The Women are coming soon!!

What's Needed to Make Top 24's

The 2017-2018 INdoor season is upon us!
For this blog, that means it's time to tell all athletes what marks they need to achieve to make my DDD lists--aka Top 24 All-Time Performers lists!!
As with any INdoor (or OUTdoor!) Preview, there are some guidelines!

The lists are for my 4 core groups--World, US, Collegiate, and HS!
These lists are for INdoors ONLY!!
NO Oversize Track marks are included!
For HS'ers, NO 1600 or 3200 marks, nor those converted FROM them!
For HS Men, the United States HS weighted throwing implements are used, as are the 39 inch hurdles!
The Men's HS Pentathlon list also includes HS weights, etc ONLY!
HS Women use International weights and hurdle heights!
The Collegiate 300 list, as well as the US 2000 list, is short of 24!

First, I want to give you an overview---
In 2015, these 8 lists (Men & Women combined) produced 373 marks!
It came down one in 2016, to 372.
But in 2017, we saw 451 (!!!) marks on my lists dated 2017!!
(That will probably change, as my lists have only the year--no month or day--listed.  Thus marks made in November or December of 2016 were part of the YEAR 2016--even though those Nov-Dec marks were NOT part of the 2015-2016 season!!)

The breakdown--
HS Men had 54, while the Women got 69!
The Collegiate Men have 45 marks, while the Women have 63.
The US lists were 54 for the Men, 77 for the Women!
And the World lists saw a more even distribution--42 Men's, 47 Women's!
Totals were 195 for the Men, and a whopping 256 for the Women!!

Can the 500 milestone be reached this season??

Men go first, with each list showing the CURRENT needed mark on the left, with 2016's on the right, with any differential noted!!
The 2016 marks are in parentheses!
NOTE: I didn't have lists for the 300's last year, so no 2016 marks are listed!
Also, as mentioned, the 2017 Collegiate 300 list, as well as the US 2000 list, are short of 24!
I'll be doing 2 groups at a time, for easier reading!

NOTE: The HS Men's & Women's 600's, plus the World 4X400 Relay , show marks needed for this year as SLOWER than those needed last year!
I believe that one or more marks I had were eliminated for one reason or another--thus I needed to find a "replacement" mark.  I chose the closest mark I could find to add to my list.
(However, I feel pretty certain those lists will add enough marks this year so we're back to "normal"!!)
Also, for the US Women's 2000 list--it's short, and I have a limit of 5:59.99 to make that list!
I added that 5:58.45 time to the list, thus making this still-short list with a slower time needed!
One more item--improvements in field events are shown in INCHES!
Thus, the "13.00" in the Women's HS Weight Throw means they improved 13 INCHES!!

Amazingly--and thrillingly!!--the Women's Collegiate lists saw EVERY event change from 2016, while HS'ers had just 2 events not go through changes!!
There were SIX events that remained the same this year on my World lists, but just one for the US!!

With a World Championship, and an additional IAAF World Tour meet, plus some exciting "new" meets set for this season, I'm hoping we'll see FIVE HUNDRED marks with "2018" next to them at season's end!!
(Of course, additional marks could come in November & December of 2018, as well as marks that come if events are moved INdoors during the "off- season"--such as when the Zurich DL held their PV INside their train station!!)

Next--and FINAL!!--INdoor Previews will be for which World, US, Collegiate, and HS Records might fall this season!!
I'll probably do this in two posts--one for each gender!!

And hopefully, I'll have some INdoor marks to report--with Cameron Haught's Mile Walk of 7:00.75 being the 1st!  (See previous post!)

Also, I' hope to have a Review of the book "18 Months Raising the Bar" for you soon--probably in early December!!
(It tells the story of the time--18 months!--when Sandi Morris and Demi Payne went wild in the PV--exchanging wins and Records often--making for one of the most exciting "era's" in Collegiate, US, and even World!--PV history!!)

See you soon!

NCAA XC--2 Ways to Win

Ednah Kurgat broke off early, gapped the field, and won as she pleased, despite the presence of a very strong field!

Justyn Knight used a blistering sprint finish to overtake the two leaders at the very end of a dramatic race.

Two ways to win, but win they did!

Kurgat, who told interviewers she was 22 years old--but whom IAAF lists as 26 (Born June 15, 1991, they say!), ran the fastest time ever in an NCAA Cross Country Championship final!
Her time of 19:19.5 beat Amy Eloise-Neale by 7.5 seconds, even though she seemed to be slogging her way into the tape, while Eloise-Neale passed a squadron of speedsters--coming from 19th at 4K to reach the podium!

The "favorite", the 2016 Champion--Karissa Schweizer--had "one of those days" many athletes mysteriously have, and gave no excuses for her 11th place finish!
She also had a strong end-kick, but it was too little, too late!

Here's the Top 8, with a list of where other "name" runners finished--and for the Women, there are TONS of them---

1. Ednah Kurgat               19:19.5
2. Amy Eloise-Neale        19:27.0
3. Charlotte Taylor           19:28.6
4. Allie Ostrander             19:31.2
5. Weronika Pyzik            19:34.0
6. Caroline Sang               19:35.6
7. Weini Kelati                  19:35.8 (1st Frosh, even though she'll be 21 on December 1st!!)
8. Grayson Murphy          19:36.3

9. Allie Buchalski
10. Dani Jones
11. Karissa Schweizer
12. Charlotte Prouse
13. Fiona O'Keefe
14. Alice Wright
16. Katie Rainsberger
18. Elinor Purrier
20. Katherine Receveur
23. Bethan Knights
30 & 31. Samantha & Jessica Drop
38. Brie Oakley (2nd Frosh)
39. Sarah Disanza
44. Sharon Lokedi
53. Emily Venters (3rd Frosh--from Boise State)
57. Elise Cranny
65. Bella Burda
70 & 74. Bethany & Megan Hasz
79. Callie Logue
134. Destiny Collins
150. Ryen Frazier

Knight, who can claim he once beat Ed Cheserek in a track 5000, had to overtake Matthew Baxter, a New Zealander, just before the tape in an exciting finish rarely seen during the King Ches era, XC or track!
Grant Fisher--like Ms Schweizer, a co-favorite for the title with Knight--also disappointed, ending 5th, but 12 seconds from Knight!
He was never really in it!

Following are the Men's Top 8, along with a string of "names" who either over or under-performed---

1. Justyn Knight             29:00.11
2. Matthew Baxter         29:00.78
3. Tyler Day                   29:04.55
4. Gilbert Kigen             29:11.90
5. Grant Fisher               29:12.6
6. Dillon Maggard         29:16.20
7. Vincent Kiprop          29:27.13
8. Peter Lomong            29:33.09

9. Lawrence Kipkoech
10. Jonathan Green
11. Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse
12. Sean Tobin
16. Alex Ostberg
17. Steven Fahy
24. Casey Clinger
27. Gilbert Kirui
30. Conner McMillan
34. Jacob Choge
37. Alfred Chelanga
39. Rory Linkletter
44. Cooper Teare
47. Hassan Abdi
67. Joe Klecker
78. Reed Brown
169. Jerrell Mock
185. Oliver Hoare

The Men's team title went to Northern Arizona, whose 74 points beat Portland's 127.
BYU was 3rd with 165, while Stanford (221), Arkansas (269), and Oregon (274) were next.

The Women's team title went to New Mexico's 90, which beat surprising San Francisco, who finished with 105.
Colorado followed with 139, while Stanford's 165, Oregon's 203, and Boise State's 264 were next.

Not sure if they're related, but another Kurgat--Caroline--won the Division II race, time of 20:32.
She ended 20 seconds ahead of Silver!
The Men's race also was a runaway, with James Nganda's 30:18 ending 34 seconds in front!

There were 2 more NXN Regional races---
London Culbreath took the South, running 17:33, easily beating Carrie Fish's 17:47.
Carter Cheeseman's 15:34 just nipped Alex Maier's 15:35!

The Southwest Women's race went to Amanda Mayoral, time of 17:14.
Aidan Troutner took the Men's race in 14:50!

Claudia Lane demolished the CIF field by 50 seconds, winning in 16:32.
And not sure where, but Katelyn Tuohy continues to rock & roll!
Her 16:52.4 was a new Course Record (for whatever course it was!)!!

Hoka One One's National Postal races saw Rebecca Story dip under 10 minutes for the 3200 meter track race for the 2nd time!
Her 9:59.80 included a 69 final lap, and beat 2nd by a HUGE margin!!
Titus Winders used a blazing 62.3 closer to take the Men's race in 9:01.55!!

The JDL November Tune-Up INdoor meet saw just one mark worth noting--
Cameron Haught Walked the Mile in 7:00.75!
Yes, that is the first INdoor mark this blog is reporting for the 2017-2018 INdoor T&F season, now officially OPEN!!

A few Road events saw some amazing results over 3 different distances!!
Almaz Ayana's much-ballyhooed first Half saw her winning the New Delhi race in 67:11.
Not the quick time predicted for her, but enough to win by 9 seconds over Yeshanah Abebel, a fellow Ethiopian!
It misses my World DDD list by 36 seconds!!
The air pollution, and initial Half inexperience, probably made her time slower than hoped for!

The Men's race went to Berhanu Legesse, his 59:46 beating A Belihu's 59:51.
But in 3rd came US Army's Len Korir, whose 59:52 was a 1:22 PR, and moving him from 10th A-T US to 2nd, just 9 seconds behind Ryan Hall's American Record!!

Another American ran well in the Kobe (Japan) Marathon!
Maegan Krifchin is 29 years old, and has a Half of 69:51 to her credit from 2015.
She improved her Marathon time by just a  few seconds--to 2:33:14--but it was enough to WIN the Women's division!!
That Half time indicates she's ripe for a HUGE improvement over the full distance--maybe to 2:26 territory!!

The Men's portion of the Valencia Marathon went to Sammy Kitwara's 2:05:15.
Evans Chebet was 2nd in 2:05:30.

Finally, in a WR attempt over 15K in a Netherlands race, Joshua Cheptegai came up 2 seconds shy of the 41:13 WR!!
And he was disappointed!!

Karissa Schweizers coach indicated she wants to run a fast 5000 in the Boston University meet in December--if she recovers well from her NCAA race!
(I have a feeling she'll be there--engines revving!!)
See you soon with more INdoor Previews, and anything else that stirs the juices!
