INdoor AGE Records--Part 2

OK, folks, here's Part 2 of my Age Records preview.
For my intro to the format, check either my previous post, or last year's posts, dated November 16th, 2014!
(In fact, feel free to look again at ANY of my 200 earlier posts!)
So here we go, starting with Age 29.

Age 29
Galen Rupp could go after 4 Age records--the Mile (3:54.49), 3000 (7:28.29), 2 Mile (8:04.69), and 5000 (13:15.64).
For the 3K or 2 Mile marks,he'd have to break the American Records!
(Will NOP runners do any Boston University WR or AR attempts, like they have in past years??  None have been announced yet!)
LaShawn Merritt or Isaac Makwela could get the VERY easy 400 record of 45.54!
Dayron Robles needs a 7.38 in the 60H to just tie the record!
Greg Rutherford needs to LJ 27-8.25 for a tie!
Ryan Whiting has an Ancient One to go after--Brian Oldfield's SP mark of 72-6.50 from 1975!!
And Renaud Lavillenie, despite breaking his WR in 2014, still lays in the shadow of Sergey Bubka, as he'd need to PV 20-2 to tie Bubka's mark from 1993!
SAFP (aka Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce) can target the 60 mark of her countrywoman VCB (7.01) or the much easier 200 (22.70).
Natasha Hastings has a 51.25 400 as her goal!
Alysia Montano has 3 marks in her sights--the 600 (1:26.42), 800 (1:57.48), and the 1000 (2:32.21), the latter of which would be an American Record by almost 2 full seconds!
Jenny Simpson potentially has 5 Age records in view--1500 & 1 Mile (4:00.72 & 4:24.98), 3000 & 2 Miles (8:31.73 & 9:27.05), and the 5000 time of 14:48.21.
I know that 5K mark would be a HUGE PR for her, but Simpson DOES have sub-15:00 abilities.
Look what Rowbury ran OUTdoors last summer over 5K!!
IF she races INdoors, Sally Pearson has a relatively easy 60H mark of 7.80 to shoot for!
Kamila Licwinko would have to really HIGH Jump (sic!) to get this Age record of 6-9.75!
Brittney Reese has Heike Drechsler's 1994 LJ of 23-7.25 to aim at!
And Nikoleta Kiriakopoulou would need to continue her cycle of MASSIVE improvement in the PV to challenge Isi's 16-5.25, dating from the London Olympics year!

Age 28
The sampling from this Age is pretty thin, but here's what I have!
Muriel Ahoure has a FAST 6.97 in the 60 to aim at!
Tiffany Porter has the 60H mark of 7.63 in her sights!
Good luck with that!!
But Yarisley Silva has one of Isinbayeva's easier (?) Age records to go after, her 15-11 from 2011.
James Dasaolu has a 60 mark of 6.46 to dream about!
Ashton Eaton will target the Heptathlon mark of 6418.

Age 27
Only one man in this Age section, but David Rudisha could get 3 Age records!
He'll go after the 600 (1:16.08), 800, (1:44.91), and the 1000 (2:15.50).
A woman with 3 targets is Blessing Okagbare, who has SAFP's 6.98 from 2014, a 200 of 22.50, and a LJ of 23-0.75 to shoot for.
Fran McCorory has the 400 mark of 50.64 to aim at!
Eunice Sum and Melissa Bishop could vie for 3 records each--the 600 (1:23.44--which is also the World Record!!), the 800 (1:57.23), and the 1000 (2:33.93).
Queen Harrison might be wanting Lolo Jones's American Record of 7.72 in the 60H.
Besides Okagbare (See above!), Shara Proctor will also be chasing the LJ mark of 23-0.75!
Two women could be targeting the Pentathlon mark of 4851.
They are Yana Maksimova and Brianne Theisen-Eaton!
Maksimova's 27th birthday is January 9th, while BTE's falls on December 18th!

Age 26
Alina Talay is one of the "new" talents in the 60H, but Susanna Kallur's 7.68 from 2008 will be a tough task!
Gwen Berry and Jeneva Stevens will go after one of Amber Campbell's 9 Age records in the WT, her 77-8.25 from 2008!  (See Age 34 for more on Campbell!)
Age Records ranging from the 600 to the 1 Mile are targets of 4 runners.
Adam Kszczot and Erik Sowinski will chase the 600 mark of 1:16.5.
Kszczot has the talent, but Wilson Kipketer's World Record 800 of 1:42.67 will be TOUGH!!
Kszczot and Matthew Centrowitz will go after the 1000 mark of 2:17.01.
The 1500 and Mile marks are 3:34.13 and 3:50.92, and will be targeted by Centrowitz and Asbel Kiprop!
That Mile mark is held by Galen Rupp!
Bogdan Bondarenko will go after the HJ mark of 7-10.50.
If anyone can take down Ulf Timmermann's 1989 mark of 73-11.25 in the SP, it would be Joe Kovacs!
Damian Warner will have Ashton Eaton's 2014 Hept mark of 6632 as his target!

Age 25
Amel Tuka has times of 1:15.86 (600), 1:44.71 (800), and 2:16.62 (1000) as his goals.
He turns 25 on January 9th.
Casimir Loxsom doesn't turn 25 until March 17th--the day before the WC open in Portland!--but he could also have Tuka's targets as his own!
(But he'd have to make the WC team, and then he'd have just the 800 available!)
Christian Taylor is just a Hop, Step, and a Jump (LOL) away from this Age mark, as it's an "easy" 57-9.75!
Well, easy for Taylor!!
David Storl has a toughie, the SP mark of 73-0.50 by Werner Gunthor from 1987.
Two WT guys will target Kibwe Johnson's 82-3.50 from 2007.
They are JC Lambert and another who share's my sister's birthday, Conor McCullough!
(Thus McCullough will be 24 until January 30th!)
Tori Bowie would have Irina Privalova's 60 & 200 times of 6.93 and 22.16 as her targets.
With Genzebe Dibaba as your possible challenger, you might advise Emma Coburn and Abeba Aregawi to FORGET any Age Record dreams!!
But the 1500 slot for this Age is empty!
If you recall, I said I'd "lost" my INdoor Age 25 record for the 1500.
Sorry to say, I haven't yet found it!
So it's "available"!
As for the Mile, it's 4:18.99, which would be problematical only for Coburn!
The 800 mark is the INdoor WR of 1:55.82, but if anyone has what it takes to get it, that would be Genzebe!
"Baby Baby" (who doesn't turn 25 until February 8th!  See Age 24!)) also might have the 1000 (2:34.68), 3000 & 2 Mile (8:26.99 & 9:06.26, both held by countrywoman Meseret Defar!!), and the 5000, also a Defar record (14:24.37), as her targets!
Which, if ANY, will Genzebe go after??
Sharika Nelvis needs to run 60H in 7.69 just to tie, but that would break the American Record!!
Ivana Spanovic needs to LJ 23-9 to tie the record!

Age 24
As noted above, Genzebe Dibaba will be 24 through February 7th, so her targets here would be 1:58.26 (800), 2:34.30 (1000), 4:04.42 (1500), 4:23.53 (1 Mile), 8:25.27 (3000), 2 Mile (9:10.50), and her own 5000 mark of 14:18.86, which is also the World Record!
But at this age, Almaz Ayana and Mercy Cherono can't be taken for granted by Baby D!!
Especially in the 3000 to 5000 range of events!
Brianna Rollins and Jasmine Stowers have  a 60H time of 7.75 as their goal!
Christabel Nettey has a workable 22-10.75 in the LJ as her goal!
A 7 inch improvement in PV height would be needed by Demi Payne to match Isi's 16-2 from 2007!
Terrence Trammell's 7.42 from 2002 might be on the minds of Pascal Martinot-Legarde and Orlando Ortega!
David Verburg will aim for the 400 mark of 45.05.
Michael Lihrman would need a WT of 80 feet even to match this Age record!
Mutaz Barshim needs a HJ of 7-10.50 to tie this record!

Age 23
Four men have 45.05 as their 400 goal.
They are Vernon Norwood, Kirani James, Deon Lendore, and Wayde Van Niekerk!
Chuk Enekwechi--born on January 28th of 1993, can tie the record here if he throws the Weight out to 83-11.25!!
(About as easy as spelling his name!!  LOL)
Piotr Lisek needs to Pole Vault 19-9 to tie this record!
Marquis Dendy just needs a LJ of 26-7.50 for a tie!
Dendy's TJ target would be a more difficult 58-1.
Boris Berian could get the 800 and 1000 records if he runs 1:44.78 and 2:15.96--both of which would be American Records!!
Berian turns 23 on December 19th!
Caleb Ndiku might want to chase the 3000 (7:31.75), 2 Mile (8:05.12), and 5000 (12:59.04) records!
Four women would need to run the 60 in 6.95, and the 200 in 22.26 just to tie the marks!
They are English Gardner, Elaine Thompson, Jenna Prandini, and Dafne Schippers!
Quite a talented foursome, eh??!!
BTW, Prandini just turned 23--on November 20th!
Kendra Harrison and Danielle Williams will challenge for the 60H mark of 7.75!
Like Demi Payne (See Age 24!), Sandi Morris would need a HUGE improvement in the PV to just match Isinbayeva's 16-1.25 from 2006!
Sifan Hassan has the wheels to go after the 1000 (2:31.23), 1500 (3:57.91), and the Mile (4:20.5) marks!
KJT (aka Katerina Johnson-Thompson) has multiple (sic!) talents, as befits a Heptathlete/Pentathlete!
IF she does the Multi in Portland (or anywhere else!), she'd need to come within 9 points of her 2015 WC winner of 5000 points--meaning a score of 4991.
She turns 23 on January 9th!
The LJ mark of 24-2.25 is out of her (or anybody else's!) range, but she might be able to tie the "weak" Age 23 HJ mark of 6-6.75!

Age 22
Courtney Okolo won't turn 22 until just before the WC begin (March 15th), but she might get the 400 record of 50.21.
Another PV'er needing a MONSTER improvement would be Angelica Bengtsson.
Her target is another Isinbayeva mark--this one being Isi's 16-0.75 from 2005!
The track events from 600 to the 5000 have 3 women capable of getting one or more of them!
Francine Niyonsaba's easiest target is the empty slot for the 600!
But the 800 mark of 1:57.67, and the 1000 record of 2:36.40 are within her capabilities!
Laura Muir is on the rise, so the 1000 mark (See above) is doable for her!
But Genzebe's WR of 3:55.17 might be a tad much for her at this time, even though she ran 3:58+ OUTdoors earlier this year!
However, the Mile mark of 4:23.33 is possible!
Faith Kipyegon DOES have the wheels to go after Dibaba's 1500 record, as well as the Mile mark listed just above.
Add Dibaba's 8:16.60 in the 3000 as a REAL challenge, but possible--even if the odds are against her!
Jan Merrill's 1979 Two Mile time of 9:31.7 is EASY!
(For most anyone!!!)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
While getting ready to say Kipyegon could also get the Age 22 5000 "record" of 14:46.44, I realized that time sounded VERY familiar!!
It turns out that's the exact same time I have in my Record Book for Age 32!!
(See Age 32!!)
So I immediately did a bit of research, and found that Alemitu Bekele's birthdate--according to my TAFWA All-Time World Indoor List book--is September 17, 1977.
If correct, then her Age 32 mark is the correct one, while this one is NOT!!
I apologize for this mix-up, and will now work on finding the proper Age 22 mark for the INdoor 5000!!

Age 22 (continued)
Speaking of the 5000, the mark I have for this age is Chris Derrick's 2013 time of 13:12.00.
Will Ed Cheserek make the attempt?
He turns 22 on February 2nd!
A perhaps better shot might be taken by Isiah Koech, who turns 22 on December 19th.
He also could target the 3000 and 2 Mile times of 7:30.72 and 8:15.49.
Mohammed Aman turns 22 on January 10th, and could shoot for the 800 mark of 1:44.57, and the 1000 mark of 2:17.26.
Liguelin Santos might have the record of 45.05 in the 400 as his goal!
Marvin Bracy, who turns 22 on December 15th, would need a 60 of 6.45 to tie the record!
That PPPP Cuban (aka Pedro or Pablo Pichardo!), needs a TJ of 58-6 to tie this mark!

Age 21
NOTE: Shawn Barber was born May 27th, 1994.  That made him Age 20 for the entire INdoor"season"--meaning generally December through mid-March!
But the Zurich DL Pole Vault was held INside a train station, so should be considered an INdoor event!
Barber Vaulted a National Record for Canada of 19-5.
During the "real" INdoor sesson, back in March, he vaulted 19-4.25 for the Age 20 record!
But his 19-5 from Zurich is the Age 21 INdoor record!!

Times of 6.45 for the 60 and 20.26 for the 200 are needed by Andre De Grasse to tie those records!
A FAST 7.33 in the 60H would be needed by Omar McLeod for a tie!
Jarrion Lawson's LJ target is 27-9.50!
Rudy Winkler's WT target is 78-9.25!
As noted above (Age 22 section!), Courtney Okolo has until March 14th to chase the 400 standard of 49.76.
She has that kind of talent, but that mark is tough!
Shaunae Miller might have a better chance at it!
Miller and Kyra Jefferson could aim for the 200 mark also--it's 22.43!
Jefferson would have a harder time going after the 60 mark of 7.09!
Ajee Wilson has 3 marks to shoot for--the 600 (1:26.22), 800 (1:58.9), and the 1000 (2:35.21).
Jessica Judd might not be yet ready to challenge Wilson for those records!
Judd was born January 7th, 1995.
But Axumawit Embaye can also get that 1000 record, as well as the 1500 and Mile marks of 4:00.13 and 4:25.73!
Nafissatou Thiam has a Pentathlon score of 4727 as her goal!

Age 20
Trayvon Bromell has the best chance to get the 60 & 200 marks of 6.46 and 20.10.
But Trentavis Friday might challenge, especially if Bromell has trouble adjusting to his new Pro status!
Michael Cherry and Steven Gardiner will vie for the 400 record of 45.03.
Cherry doesn't turn 21 until 3 days AFTER the WC ends!
Robert Biwott would need a 600 in 1:15.31, an 800 in 1:44.52, and a 1000 of 2:16.96 to tie those records!
Biwott doesn't turn 20 until January 28th!
Ronald Kwemoi could shoot for the 1500 (3:33.08) and 1 Mile (3:50.81) records.
Dina Asher-Smith might try for the 60 (7.09) and 200 (22.57) records!
Anita Hinriksdottir needs a 1000 in 2:37.89 to tie that mark!
Hinriksdottir doesn;t turn 20 until January 13th!
Sambere Teferi will target the distance events.
Her target marks are 8:33.49 (3000), 9:29.03 (2 Mile), and 14:35.46 (the 5000).
Keturah Orji's best shot at a record would be in the LJ, where the slot is empty.
But she'd need a PR of 46.10.25 to tie the TJ record!
Kendell Williams & Dior Hall will battle it out over the 60H to get the record of 7.91--or at least tie it!
Hall's birthdate is January 2nd, 1996.

Age 19
If Mary Cain is indeed on the comeback trail---as she SEEMS to be!!--then put her on the list of challengers for EVERY Age 19 mark from the 600 to the 2 Mile!
The shortest distance is her best shot, as the 600 slot is currently empty!
The 800 (2:00.30), 1000 (2:38.93), 1500 (4:03.83), 1 Mile (4:30.3), 3000 (8:37.47), and 2 Mile (9:59.6) are the records!
The 3000 would be the toughest, as it would necessitate a 20+ second PR over her OUTdoor best!
Cain's foes in these quests would be Alexa Efraimson in the 800, 1000, 1500, and 1 Mile, Dawit Seyaum in the 1500 and 1 Mile, and Raevyn Rogers in the 600, 800, and 1000!
Efraimson won't be 19 until February 20th!
There's 4 Pole Vaulters who could challenge for the record of 14-10.25.
They are Desiree Freier, Tori and Lexi Weeks, and the woman who recently broke her own OUTdoor National Record of New Zealand, Eliza McCartney!
The Weeks twins turned 19 on November 20th, while McCartney will turn 19 on December 11th!
There MIGHT be a better mark I don't have, but the SP mark for this age I DO have would be a good target for Raven Saunders.
It's "just" 62-6.25.
The reason I have SOME doubt about that mark is because the records for Ages 18 and 20 are 67-3.50 (18) and 69-3.50 (20)!!
Alfred Kipketer is my sole man on this list.
Born December 28th, 1996, he could target the 800 (1:44.15) and 1000 (2:16.23) records!
Well, actually, there might be TWO men on this list!
Konrad Bukowiecki turns 19 on March 17th, so if he's in the WC, he could target this age's record of 69-0.75 for the Shot Put!

Age 18
Bukowiecki has a MUCH softer target for this Age record, as it's just 63-11.
He has until March 16th to get this one!
Adam Hague and Paulo Benavides have the best chance for the PV record of 18-7.50.
Yomif Kejalcha could get the 3000 (7:32.87), 2 Mile (8:43.24!!--a piece of cake!!), and 5000 (13:02.36) records!
Andrew (or do we call him Drew?) Hunter could also target the 2 Mile!
Grant Fisher could get German Fernandez's mark of 3:55.02.
I can see big improvements for Fisher in 2016--if he remains healthy!
Noah Lyles would need times of 6.51 and 20.40 to tie the 60 and 200 records.
Ewe Swoboda could get the 60 & 200 records of 7.09 and 22.80.
Morgan Lake has a chance at the Pentathlon record of 4635.
But Vashti Cunningham--who turns 18 on January 18th!-- will challenge Lake for the HJ mark of 6-5.50!
Add Kaylin Whitney to the possibles for the 60 and 200 marks, but she doesn't turn 18 until March 9th!

Age 0 to 17
As noted above, Whitney will be 17 through March 8th, so put her down for the records of 7.20 and 23.09 for the 60 and 200.
Candace Hill turns 17 on February 11th, so she has the entire INdoor season to get those same marks!
(BTW, Age Records go to ANYone, whether they're a HS'er who's turned Pro, or have remained an amateur!!)
Sydney McLaughlin has two records as goals, them being the 60H (8.17) and 400 (51.93).
Abdul Sani Brown could target the 60 and 200 records of 6.62 and 20.83.
Chris Taylor and Josephus Lyles will go after the 400 mark of 45.24!
Ja Mari Ward might chase the LJ mark of 26-7.75.
I don't have the record for the TJ, so Ward could get that one too (until I find a better mark!!).
Mondo Duplantis is MEGA-talented, but can he raise his PV best by about 10 inches to get Adam Hague's record of 18-2.50??
Bobby Colantonio would need to throw the International WT to get the record of 65-8.25!

And that's IT, Baby!!
Next INdoor Preview will have my predictions for which World, US, Collegiate, and HS records might fall this season!
Expect those posts (??) sometime this weekend!

INdoor AGE Records--Part 1

Were my Age Records posts from 2014 of any value to you?
Did you enjoy them, and maybe even refer to them as the season progressed?
I hope your answers are "Yes!", because these two posts are almost exactly the same--with different names at different ages--but essentially the same, one year later.
As with last year, I will begin with "40 and over", followed by "Age 39", "Age 38", and so on, down to "Age 18", then "Age 0 to 17".
I'll give some names of athletes who---IF they compete INdoors in 2016!---have at least a fair chance of breaking an Age Record!
NOTE: Except for Yelena Insinbayeva, NO Russian athlete is listed!  For obvious reasons!

Before I begin, here's a few items of interest I've gathered since my last post.

Nevada Mareno's 4:43.49 Mile from the JDL All-Comers meet was NOT her only race of the day!
She went to Raleigh (from Winston-Salem) to race over 3200 meters (UGH!!) in a Hoka One One OUTdoor Postal meet, about 8 to 10 hours after her morning INdoor Mile!
And she ran a GREAT 10:02.89, which was for all intents a solo run, as 2nd was some 30 seconds back!
BUT--it won't be found on my DDD list, as I don't include times run over 1600 or 3200 meters, or times converted from them!

Erin Finn lost both of her shoes at the 2K point of the 6000 meter NCAA XC race, as I noted in my previous post!
Well, turns out she lost both of her SOCKS also!!
And despite running barefoot the final 4K, she still finished 19th!
What a BEAST!!

On a happier note, Courtney Frerichs was surprised post-race by her boyfriend Griffin Humphreys with an engagement ring and a knee-kneeling proposal---caught on camera, and presented later in a Flotrack video!
After saying a VERY fast "Yes!", her teammates (from winner New Mexico!) saw what had happened, started screaming, then surrounded her for a group hug!
Brought tears to my eyes!

The USATF Championship 50000 Walk was held, with John Nunn the top American, time of 4:03:40.

Interestingly---because I'd thought he'd retired!---one time teen phenom Trevor Barron finished 3rd in the 20K Walk, though his time was a pedestrian (pun intended!  LOL) 1:33:37.

Miranda Melville walked 1:37:52, about 49 seconds behind 4th placer, Canadian Rachel Seaman.

Erin Taylor-Walcott walked the 50K in 5:03:34.
But the article said she'd walked that distance in 4:33:23 in 2012, which is the American Record.
The article mentioned the World Record as being 4:10:59 by Sweden's Monica Svensson from 2007.

There's some question about which mark is which record---which I will leave for the "authorities" to have a rumble about!
Meanwhile, MY T&F Record Book will list the 4:10:59 as the WR, and the 4:33:23 as the US National Record!
NOTE--In my Event Schedule post, I had the Walks dated for December 22nd.  They were held on November 22nd!  Sorry for the error!

Finally, a couple of announcements.
Shannon Rowbury has said she'll be running the 3000--NOT the 1 Mile--at the Camel City Classic on January 30th.
Kim Conley and Jordan Hasay will race an OUTdoor 10000 on a track in Sacramento on December 6th!
This will be an attempt to get their Olympic Q of 32:15!
I HOPE this will be a legit race, and not another Time Trial like the one Hasay & Tara Erdmann did in 2013 to try for their Moscow WC Qualifier!
Speaking of Hasay, she said she wants to do an INdoor 5000, besides a 3000 (to Q for the WC in Portland!).
She didn't say when or where.

Now for the AGE Records!

Age 40 & over
Bernard Lagat now holds the records here for the 1500 (3:40.20), 1 Mile (3:54.91), 3000, (7:37.92), and 2 Mile (8:17.05)
Left empty is the slot for the Age 40 & over 5000.
No announcements yet on what distances he'll run INdoors, but I hope he'll do a 5K--to complete the cycle!
Adam Nelson might NOT be retired!
If he competes, he would automatically get the Age 40 & over SP record, as I have none at the moment!
Also, no word if Jo Pavey will compete INdoors, but if she does, I have no records for the 5000, so....!!
And the 3000 and 2 Mile records remain 9:02.83 and 9:50.65.
Two HJ'ers might compete.
The Age 40 & over Record holder is Venelina Veneva-Mateeva, whose mark is 6-4.25.
Amy Acuff could challenge that!

Age 39
Kim Collins!
Both the 60 and 200 meter slots are open for his taking!

Age 38
Reese Hoffa will go after the mark of 64-10.25.

Age 37
Chris Brown--IF he races INdoors!--can get the 400 mark, since I have none listed.
He holds the Age 31, 33, 34, and 35 records for the distance!
Angelo Taylor, whose birthdate is December 29, 1978, could offer Brown a challenge!
AG Kruger will try for his 7th Age record in the WT, with Lance Deal's 77-11.50 from 1999 as his target!
He has the Age 28, 29, 31, 32, 34 & 35 marks already!

Age 36
BTW, Kruger's B-date is February 18, 1979, so until February 17th, he'll go after Deal's 79-5.25 from 1998!
Thus, he COULD end up with EIGHT Age records!  (See Age 37!)
Ruth Beitia could add her 3rd Age record (She has the Age 34 & 35 records!) for the HJ, as my Age 36 slot is empty!
Beitia won't turn 37 until April 1st!
Carmelita Jeter can fill my empty slots for the 60 and 200!
Becky Holliday turns 36 on March 12th, so if she makes the Worlds team (Unlikely!!), she'll have a chance at TWO Age records! (See Age 35 below!)

Age 35
As noted above, Becky Holliday has until March 11th to get the Age record here.
(I have none listed yet!)
Also competing for this Age in the PV is April Steiner-Bennett.
Miki Barber and Aleen Bailey could fill my empty slot for the 200.
But they'll have a difficult target in the 60--Merlene Ottey's 7.02 from 1996.
Jearl Miles-Clark's 52.21 for the 400 presents a much easier target for Natalia Pygda, who ran under 51 OUTdoors last year!
Assuming Fabiana Murer competes at the WC, she could also get the PV mark, as she turns 35 on March 16, just 2 days before the WC begin!!
Christian Cantwell has a tough mark to aim for in the SP--Kevin Toth's 71-2.50 from 2003!
Jake Freeman could get Kruger's 77-9.25 WT record from 2015.

Age 34
Brycen Spratling turns 34 on March 10, but Chris Brown's 47.33 in the 400 is his worst Age mark, so an easy mark to aim at!
He could also get the 600 mark, as I have none for this Age!
Justin Gatlin will be 34 on February 10th, so the marks he wants are 6.47 and 20.25 in the 60 & 200, both held by Linford Christie from 1995.
Paul K Koech can aim for the 3000 (7:35.41, by Lagat!) and 2 Mile (8:24.22, by Paul Bitok) records.
Or for the empty slot in the 5000!!
Maggie Vessey, Treniere Moser, and Jenny Meadows might all compete for the 600 (None!), 800 (1:59.69), and 1000 (2:35.39) marks!
As noted in my Age 35 section, Fabiana Murer will be 34 through March 15th, so that empty slot could very well have Murer's name on it!!
However, Jenn Suhr--who turns 34 on February 5th--could challenge Ms Murer!
Muna Lee has an easy 200 mark--23.04!--to shoot for, but a VERY tough 60 mark (6.97) to aim at!
BTW, Ottey's 6.97 is the oldest sub-7.00 on the books for Women!
Amber Campbell OWNS the Age records for the Weight Throw!
She has 9 right now (23, then 26 through 33!), so could have TEN by season's end!!

Age 33
As noted above, Suhr will be 33 through February 4th!
Her target is Murer's 15-10 from 2015!
In the Intro, I said I'd include ONE Russian in these lists---Yelena Isinbayeva!
She's said she'll open her season on February 16th, and wants to compete in the WC!
Stay tuned for whether ANY Russian will be allowed in Portland!
Novlene Williams-Mills and DeeDee Trotter could get Miles-Clark's 51.36 in the 400 from 2000!
Veronica Campbell-Brown will aim for 22.94 in the 200, with Ottey's 6.99 in the 60 probably not a realistic target!
Lolo Jones is successfully rehabbing after surgery--She's treadmill running now!--but is still doubtful for INdoors, IMO.
IF she proves me wrong, she'll need a 60H time of 7.91 to tie the record!
Speaking of the 60H, David Oliver has a HUGE target in Allen Johnson's 7.36 from 2004!
Brycen Spratling (See Age 34!) has until March 9th to get Chris Brown's 45.90!
But he can have the empty 600 slot just by finishing a 600!!
Tyson Gay and Asefa Powell have fairly easy targets in the 60 & 200---6.57 and 20.65.

Age 32
Jeremy Wariner has TWO empty slotted marks to shoot for--the 400 and 600!
Nick Symmonds could also get the 600 mark, but a tougher target will be the 800, where Wilson Kipketer has the record of 1:44.68 from 2003.
BTW, Nick turns 32 on December 20th!
Nick Willis needs a 1500 in 3:35.97, or a Mile in 3:52.37 to tie those marks!
Mo Farah said he'll race just once INdoors--a 3000 in Glasgow!
His target will be Lagat's 7:32.43 from 2007!
Jesse Williams would need to HJ 7-8 to tie that record!
Trey Hardee could break the Hept mark of 6196!
Viola Kibiwot, who turns 32 on December 22nd, will shoot for a 3000 in 8:35.67, Two Miles in 9:28.29, and 5000 in 14:46.44--to tie those records!
Blanka Vlasic needs to HJ 6-8.25 to tie that mark!
Caterine Ibarguen--Triple Jumper Supreme!--needs a 49-2.50 for a tie!
She turns 32 on February 12th!

Age 31
As noted above, Ibarguen has until February 11th to TJ 49-3 to get this Age Record!
Sanya Richards-Ross and Christine Ohuruogu will have a BIG target--Jarmila Kratochvilova's WR of 49.59!
But SRR doesn't turn 31 until February 26th!
Dawn Harper-Nelson will need to run 60H in 7,83 to tie this record!
Shannon Rowbury has several records to aim at--the 1000 (2:35.50), 1500 (4:02.3), 1 Mile (4:18.86), 3000 (8:37.91), Two Mile (9:38.06), and the 5000 (14:54.73)
Molly Huddle could join Rowbury in chasing the 2 Mile and 5000 marks!
Valerie Adams would need a big 69-9.50 in the SP for a tie!
Leo Manzano needs a 1500 in 3:36.73 and a Mile in 3:51.46 to tie!
Duane Solomon has 3 marks to go for--a 600 of 1:16.27, Johnny Gray's American Record 800 of 1:45.00, and the 1000 mark of 2:16.87.
Lopez Lomong has a fairly easy 5000 mark to shoot for, 13:11.13.
Wallace Spearmon turns 31 on December 29th, so his targets are 6.46 and 20.10.

Age 30
Walter Dix would need times of 6.42 and 20.32 to tie the 60 & 200 records!
But he doesn't turn 30 until January 31st!
(Personal Note--January 31st is also my sister's birthday!!)
American Record holder David Torrence needs a 2:17.29 for a tie of the 1000 mark!
As noted in Age 31, SRR has until February 25th to target Kratochvilova's 49.64!
But she might get a challenge from Allyson Felix, who turned 30 on November 18th!
Tianna Bartoletta needs a 60 of 7.02, a 200 in 22.24, and a Long Jump of 23-3.25 to tie the records!
Sally Kipyego will aim for a 3000 in 8:33.05, a 2 Mile of 9:43.94, and a 5000 in 14:39.29, if she wants those records!
Christine Schwanitz--who becomes 30 on Christmas Eve, has a much better chance than Michelle Carter to get the Age 30 SP record of  67-11.
Carter would need to break the American Record by more than a foot!!
Jessica Ennis-Hill will turn 30 on January 20th, so her Pentathlon target mark is 4927!

Thanks for sticking with me in this rather lengthy post.
Part 2---with Ages 29 down to "0-17" will be posted in a few hours!

NCAA XC & 1st INdoor Results

This has been a kick-ass 24 hours for lovers of our varied sport!
Besides today's NCAA Cross Country Championships (held in Louisville KY), I've got a couple of interesting marks from the JDL All Comers T&F meet, also held today!
Plus--I have a new National Record to report--from OUTdoors!!
But the T&F stuff will have to wait.
Because that Collegiate XC finale gave us some fascinating data to mine for future relevancy.

The Women's race led things off.
They even livestreamed it!
Well, they SAID they'd livestream it!

We wound up seeing MAYBE 2 whole minutes of the Women's race.
That's about 10% of it.
Apparently their wireless connection fizzled out!

But we did see Molly Seidel cross the finish line first, hands risen in the classic victory pump, about 30 meters ahead of the top Freshman, Allie Ostrander, from Alaska and Boise State.

The women were all one pack for the first 2K or so--hard to tell from the WORST "coverage" of a Championship XC race--EVER!!
Then it came down to the expected Big Three--Seidel, Ostrander, and Arkansas's Dominique Scott, with a few others not too far behind--including a group from New Mexico!
Again, hard to know EXACTLY where Seidel started to break away, but I'm guessing it wasn't until around 5000 meters in.
When they rounded the final turn, with about 300 meters to go, Seidel led Ostrander by just 10 meters, and expanded it all the way in, finally beating her tiny rival, 19:28.6 to 19:33.6.
Scott held 3rd in 19:40.9.

The rest of the Top Ten were:
4th---Courtney Frerichs (19:48)
5th---Alice Wright (19:53)
6th---Anna Rohrer (19:59) (2nd Frosh)
7th---Allina (?) Buchalski (20:02)
8th---Maddie Meyers (20:03)
9th---Brenna Peloquin (20:04) (3rd Frosh, and teammate of Ostrander!)
10th--Sharon Lokedi (20:04) (4th Frosh!)

Here's several others I see as notable:

11th---Erin Clark (20:05)
12th---Ednah Kurgat (20:06) (NOT Edna Kiplagat!  LOL)
14th---Chelsea Blaase (20:07)
19th---Erin Finn (She lost BOTH shoes just after 2K!!  Ran in socks rest of the way!!!)
20th---Sarah Collins
27th---Waverly Neer
38th---Tessa Barrett
50th---Rhianwedd Price
89th---Claudia Saunders
106th--Audrey Belf
108th--Ryen Frazier (Still going DOWN after a HOT start to season!!)
117th--Aisling Cuffe  (Said she just had a bad day, but also still recovering from injuries!)
166th--Sarah Feeny

New Mexico KICKED ASS!!!
They scored 49 points, the best (lowest) score since---1982!!
And their 80 point victory margin was the 3rd largest in history!  (90 is the highest!)

Colorado scored 129 in 2nd, with Oregon 3rd with 214.

The Freshman Women also kicked some ass---the Men's Frosh runners!!
The Women, as noted, had 4 Frosh in the Top 10, while the first First Year scorer for the Men finished 11th!!

And speaking of the Men, Edward Cheserek regained his "King Ches" moniker with a SPRINTaway victory over wannabe-King, Patrick Tiernan.

Gotta hand it to Tiernan--he took the game to Ches, saying "Come and get me, Dude!".
That lasted until about 9K, when Ches moved.
Slowly at first--gaining 5 meters--then in a tsunamic flash flood of tough running, finally winning by over 25 seconds, 28:45.8 to 29:11.1.
If Ches ever decides to RACE a track 10K against the WORLD's best, I'm predicting he has a sub-27:00 in him--right now!!!
His final 300 meters were classic-Prefontaine icon-entertainer, as he raised his fingers a few times in "I'm Da MAN!"-fashion, practically stopping to acknowledge the crowd's cheers, then continuing his sprint to the line!
He added at least 5 seconds to his time!
(I dare him to try that in a track race against Mo Farah or Hagos Gebrhiwet!!)

Anyway, here's the rest of the Top Ten, plus several other notables.

3rd---Pierce Murphy (29:37.0)
4th---Justyn Knight (29:46.1)
5th---Jonathan Green (29:49.5)
6th---Jim Rosa (29:52.7)
7th---Sean McGorty (29:53.4) (Cardinal teammates Rosa & McGorty have finished back to back a few times this season!!)
8th---Colin Bennie
9th---Martin Hehie (??) (29:59.5)
10th--Marc Scott (30:02.6)

11th---Jonah Koech (30:04) (Top Frosh!)
15th---Anthony Rotich (30:06)
17th---Grant Fisher (30:07) (2nd Frosh, and first former HS sub-4:00 Miler!)
22nd---Thomas Curtin
26th---John Dressel (3rd Frosh)
31st---Ben Saarel
67th---Mason Ferlic
70th---Elijah Armstrong
85th---Matthew Maton (2nd former HS sub-4:00 Miler!)
97th--Joe Rosa (And I thought twins ALWAYS finish together!!  LOL)
116th--Chad Noelle
125th--Cerake Geberkidane

While the team race wasn't a blow-out, like the Women's was, it WAS a shocker of sorts!
Favorite going in, Colorado's Men LOST--to Syracuse!
It was 82 to 91, with Stanford well back in 3rd with 151 points.
(It was their 4th and 5th runners, as their first 3 actually finished 2nd to Syracuse's 1st three, and ahead of Colorado's!!)

Sticking to non-T&F activity for a minute longer, today's Philadelphia 8K Road Race was won by Kenyan Eliud Ngetich in 23:15, with the Women's race going to American Marielle Hall in 26:03!
Good times!
(If anything of note happens in tomorrow's Philly Half and Full Marathons, I'll report it in my next post!!)

Now on to Track and Field!!

And we'll begin with a new OUTdoor National Record for New Zealander Eliza McCartney!
She Vaulted 14-9, breaking her own mark of 14-7.25.
She won't be 19 until December 11th, but she's 3.25 inches shy of Angelica Bengtsson's Age 18 record, and even further off from Australian Nina Kennedy's Age 17 record of 15-0.75 from earlier this year!

Trumpets & Drum Roll, please!
The first significant (should put that word in quotes!!) INdoor mark of the 2015-2016 season comes AGAIN from the JDL All Comers meet.

Last year, it was on November 22nd, but the calendar change brought it to us one day earlier!
And this time, it wasn't Ms Frazier who did the honors!
(Especially not with the way she ran in the NCAA XC race today!  See above!)

But a Frazier DID play a "supporting actress" role!

In the 1 Mile race on their 200 meter track, Nevada Mareno ALMOST got a PR, winning the race in 4:43.49, about 0.7 faster than Ryen's opener last year, but 0.26 shy of her PR, run earlier this year--in the 2015 portion of the 2014-2015 season!
So Mareno remains 12th A-T HS!

And what about that "other" Frazier?
Well, I'm sad to report that the decline of Ryen's older sister Wesley continues.
Whether due to injuries or illness, or the switch back from Duke to NC State, or to her training mainly with Ryen, and NOT the rest of their teammates (See Let's Run's Forum for a lengthy discussion about that!), I have no idea!

But 11th Grader Mareno finished about 6 seconds in front of College Junior (or is she still a Soph, because of redshirting & her transfer??) Frazier, with Wesley running just 4:49.52.

Don't get me wrong--I WANT Wesley to succeed, to return to her brilliant form of 2013--but to see such a massively talented woman running like a HS Freshman is just---sad!
But maybe she'll surprise us, and show everybody what's what later this season!
I really do hope she does!

Well, that's it!
What's next?

Next post (in 1 day, or 2 or 3?) will be my Age Records Preview for the INdoor season.
(See last year's posts!)
Then I'll do my core group (World, US, Collegiate, HS) predictions for which records might be broken this season.
Finally---among my INdoor Preview posts!--will come my chart of what quality marks are needed to make it onto my Top 24 INdoor Performers lists---my DDD's!

That last will probably be at either the end of November, or the first week of December.

Along the way, if ANYthing happens in our favorite sport, I'll let you know!
Right now, I have NO information on who's running where, or which records they'll be trying to break--other than what I've already related in earlier posts.

See you soon!

Collegiate INdoor Class Records

Sorry for saying (in the previous post) I would do BOTH HS and Collegiate Class Records in the same post.
As I got towards the end of the HS section, I realized that post was already too long, so decided to do the Collegiates in a separate post.
And here it is!

The format is the same.
I'll list each Class separately--Men first--then offer my predictions of which Records might fall, and maybe a name or two who are most likely to do it.

I'll close with some brief (??) comments on some non-Records & Marks issues!

Frosh Class
6.54, 20.40, 44.93, 1:16.92, 1:46.13, 2:19.53, (No 1500 mark!), 3:55.02, 7:52.64, 13:41.89, 7.57, 7-6, 26-7.75, 55-8.25, 18-8.75, 65-10.50, 74-10.50, 5674 (Heptathlon)

While it's not quite as problematical to predict first year Collegiate records (as it is for Frosh HS'ers), it's still difficult, as the transition from HS to College is many times fraught with issues young athletes aren't able to deal with while still a teenager.
Not to mention possible injuries, and the change from HS weight implements to the International weights!
(The latter, INdoors, is just for the SP and WT, as well as the height of the hurdles in the 60H.)

But I could see the 600, 1 Mile , 3000, 5000, and PV records going.
Also, if they time Grant Fisher enroute, we could get a 1500 record!
I see Fisher (& maybe Matthew Maton) as good for the Mile mark!

Soph Class
6.51, 20.10, 44.57, 1:17.35, 1:44.84, (No 1000 mark!), 3:41.19, 3:55.33, 7:41.45, 13:08.28, 7.45, 7-7, 27-6.75, 56-7.50, 19-1.50, 71-3.50, 77-6, 6070

With some great sprinters coming off the HS ranks recently, I could see the 60 mark going down.
I'd add the 600, (a 1000 record!), 1500, 1 Mile, and maybe the PV.

There's some tough marks in this Class, including the overall Collegiate Records in the 200, 400, 800, 5000, and the 60H.

Junior Class
6.51, 20.26, 45.03, 1:16.98, 1:45.88, (No 1000 record!), 3:38.60, 3:54.74, 7:42.79, 13:26.01, 7.50, 7-7.75, 27-4, 56-11.50, 19-4.75, 70-6.25, 80-0.25, (No Hept mark!)

If Trayvon Bromell hadn't turned Pro, I'd give him the 60 and 200 records---IF he competed in them INdoors!
(There are no Collegiate PRO records, as there are for High Schoolers!)
Watch for Michael Cherry in the 400, and of course, Ed Cheserek in everything from the 1500 to the 5000.

If Cheserek goes for time INdoors (I'd give THAT just 50-50 odds!), then those distance records could ALL go down!

Otherwise, I see the 60, 400, 600, and the WT as at least somewhat vulnerable.
BTW, all of the events, both HS and College, where I'm MISSING Class Records, probably HAVE Records!  In the next few months, I'll attempt to fill in all the gaps in my Record Book!!

Senior Class
6.45, 20.26, 45.29, 1:15.79, 1:45.33, 2:18.55, 3:37.25, 3:52.88, 7:38.59, 13:13.74, 7.47, 7-9.25, 28-2.25, 57-5, 19-2.25, 70-7.25, 83-11.25, 6499

With Andre De Grasse (for the present!!) NOT going Pro, the 60 and 200 are up for him to grab.
Besides those, the 400 is VERY weak, and to varying degrees, so are the 1000, 5000, TJ, PV, and SP.

Of course, with the Senior Class, breaking a CLASS Record is likely to also take down the overall Collegiate Record!!

Now we turn to the Women.

Frosh Class
7.12, 22.40, 50.88, 1:29.53, 2:04.27, 2:44.77, 4:22.78, 4:32.79, 8:58.88, 15:20.57, 7.99, 6-4.25, 21-3.50, 45-10.50, 14-5.25, 61-1.25, 68-11.75, 4635

The 200 Frosh mark is the only event where a Freshman holds the overall Collegiate Record!!
Yet, with the sprints in general on the upswing of late, I could see that as one of the records open for breaking!
Add the 60, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 1 Mile, 3000, 5000, LJ, PV, and WT as good for a challenge.
One (or both!) of the Weeks twins could get the PV record!

That 1500 mark is so bad, I'm of the opinion it's NOT the actual record!
I'll search around, and see what I can find!
But if it IS the record, it WILL fall--IF someone runs that distance, or is timed enroute to a Mile!

Soph Class
7.13, 22.49, 50.82, 1:28.78, 2:02.76, 2:44.77, (No 1500 mark!), 4:32.72, 9:02.05, 15:27.42, 7.90, 6-5.25, 21-11, 46-4, 15-1, 59-7, 75-7.50, 4678

The 60, 200, 600, 800, 1000, 1 Mile, 3000, 5000, 60H, LJ, TJ, PV, SP, and WT records could go down!
I know that's a whole bunch of records, but this Class has a bunch of almost World Class athletes!

You have Dior Hall to challenge the 60H, Keturah Orji in the Horizontal Jumps, Desiree Freier (And??) in the PV, and Raven Saunders in the SP!

Junior Class
7.09, 22.49, 50.80, (No 600 record!), 2:01.65, 2:45.40, 4:12.18, 4:30.03, 8:58.14, 15:28.11, 7.78, 6-6, 22-8, 46-2.50, 14-10.75, 62-10, 83-10.25, 4586

Look at the 60, 200, 800, 1000, 1500, 1 Mile, 3000, 5000, PV, and Heptathlon as good possibilities to go down!

Kendell Williams would be looking for her 3rd straight Collegiate Class Record in the Multi.
She also holds the 9th and 12th Grade HS Records in the Pentathlon!

It's embarrassing that the Collegiate 1000 records for Women are mostly slower than the HSR!!
Hopefully, that will change in 2016!

Only the Frosh and Junior Class PV records are still under 15 feet!
That too could end in 2016!

Senior Class
7.08, 22.43, 50.46, 1:27.78, 2:00.75, 2:41.00, 4:09.77, 4:25.91, 8:42.03, 15:12.22, 7.84, 6-5, 22-8, 46-9, 15-7, 63-0.75, 83-1.75, 4566

Again, several of these Senior Class marks are also the overall CR.
Nonetheless, I could see the 60, 200, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 1 Mile, 5000, 60H, and the heptathlon as possible targets.

That 3000 Record is one of the very best Collegiate Records--Men or Women--but I could see it falling in the right race!

Well, that does it for Class Records.

About the banning of Russia from Rio, I have mixed feelings.
Don't get me wrong--I'm as much anti-drugs as most people.
But the entire Russian nation would be punished for the sins of a few!
(Okay, so it's more than "a few"!!)
But come on, I won't believe that EVERYone in Russia is dirty!

A recent article (or was it a Tweet?) said that Yelena Isinbayeva, Anna Chicherova, and Sergey Shubenkov would be among those unable to compete!
They haven't tested positive in their entire careers!

One suggestion is for them (and other ban-ees) to compete independently under the Olympic banner!
I would be okay with that.
(But we'd all KNOW they're Russian!!)

Then there's the ongoing possibility of an appeal and/or a deal.

Another negative aspect of a ban would be the possibility of some of Russia's allies joining in a boycott.
Do we really want to relive 1980 and 1984--not to mention 1976?

Alysia Montano has been Tweeting (and Facebooking) about the probability she'll be upgraded to Medal status in 4 different Championships and/or Olympics.
But she's not the only one who could/will benefit from drug bans.

Marta Dominguez has been given a 3 year ban, and all of her marks from 2009 to 2012 will be erased.
This moves Jenny Simpson from 5th to 4th in the 2009 World Championship Steeplechase!

I'll probably have more on this in the future, as several National, Age, Meet, Place, etc records might be changed!

No word yet on who's going to be in the JDL All-Comers meet, coming up the same day as the NCAA XC Championships--November 21st!
But I will be reporting on that meet--assuming there's noteworthy marks!--in my XC post--probably either late Saturday or early Sunday!

Also coming up will be my Age Records post--or posts!
(There were 2 of them last year!)

The final (?) INdoor Preview post will be another predictions post--as to which World, US, Collegiate, or HSR's will fall this season---and their odds!
That may not come until early December---or at least sometime AFTER Thanksgiving!

I found out that Elise Cranny has been injured, and that's why she hasn't raced XC this year.
Have no idea if she'll be returning in time for INdoors!

Haven't heard anything from Alexa Efraimson lately.
But maybe it's that proverbial "quiet before the storm".

I'm SURE it was a joke, but Spikes tweeted that Valerie Adams would race the 60H in Portland in the WC!
Val even went along with the "joke"---sort of!
THAT would be a sight to behold!!

Speaking of the 60H, Lolo Jones is quickly mending from her surgery.
But will she try to run INdoors?
IMO, it looks doubtful, but who knows!

Molly Huddle was asked if she's ruled out running the Olympic Trials Marathon!
She didn't rule it out 100%, but it sounded like a "NO!" to me!
Yet, if she does run it, I'd put her on the team---now!!
(And that would mean a team of Flanagan, Linden, and Huddle!)

There's an even more preposterous "rumor" that Galen Rupp might do the same!
If HE did, put HIM on the team!

And if BOTH do it, do NOT erase them off your 10000 predictions!
They could do both!

Well, see you in 2 or 3 days!

ADDED 15 minutes after first posting!
Bad and sad news about Kayla Montgomery.
She wrote on Facebook (with a photo of herself) that she's had her first relapse of her Multiple Sclerosis, since first being diagnosed with MS when she was 14 years old.
She wrote that she's working with doctors to reverse the symptoms of the relapse.
She did not say whether this means the end of her Collegiate running career at Lipscomb!
To me, that says that she WILL compete again!
Whatever happens, her athletic career has been a near miracle, as MS is--or can be--a seriously debilitating disease, one that puts strong people in wheelchairs and constant use of walkers!
That she's been able to run, and run FAST (17:16 for 5000 as a Senior in HS, and 35:49 for the 10000 in her Frosh year at Lipscomb) tells you how strong and determined this young lady is.
Please take 12+ minutes of your day and watch the ESPN video called "Catching Kayla".
It's now almost 2 years old, but it will remind you what a special woman Kayla Montgomery is.
Let's all wish her a swift recovery, and a return to the running wars!

Indoor Class Records

This is (mostly) about Class Records, including both HS and Collegiate classes.
Last year, I did separate posts for the 2 levels, but here I'm combining them in 1 post.
As with 2014, I'll give some names of athletes I think have a good chance to break some of these records.

But first, I need to make a couple of Corrections--and one Addition!--to my NCAA Regionals post!

The 2nd placer in the Northeast Men's Regional was Colin BENNIE, not Colin Benner!
(At least, that's what the eTN says!!)

But a HUGE mistake was made with the woman who finished 2nd in the Southeast Regional!
I said her name was Ednah KIPLAGAT--and even joked about how she wasn't Edna Kiplagat, the famous Kenyan marathoner!
Her name--again according to the eTN--is Ednah KURGAT!

Two mistakes were made in my report on the USATF 12K races.
Molly Huddle ran 38:36 to win, but her margin over 2nd placer Sara Hall was 26 seconds, not 29 as I'd stated!
Hall ran 39:02.
And in the Men's race, Sam Chelanga was given the SAME time as winner Tyler Pennel, both timed in 34:35.
If you remember, I'd said that they were more like two TENTHS of a second apart, rather than 2 full seconds!
I was right!

As for the glaring omission, I somehow completely overlooked the Great Lakes Regional!

Michigan won both team battles, scoring 67 for the Men, and 69 for the Women.
Mason Ferlic won the Individual race, time of 30:18.3.
Finishing 2nd was Matt McClintock, time of 30:20.9.

The clear winner for the Women was Molly Seidel, who ran 20:04.4.
Second was Freshman Anna Rohrer, some 14 seconds back.
Erin Finn finished a far back 4th, time of 20:44.3.

Now for the Class Records.
Instead of grouping all the 4 classes (for each level) together--like I did last year--I'll do each Grade separately, beginning with HS 9th Graders.
As I did last year, I'll list the Records in the general order of events, with no names or dates.
I'll do the Men first!

9th Grade
6.78, 21.95, 48.76, 1:20.97, 1:55.45, 2:33.98, 4:02.21, 4:15.43, 8:23.80, 8:57.44, 14:18.42, 8.03, 6-8, 24-5, 46-8.50, 16-9.50, 66-7.25, 64-7.50

It's next to impossible for me to offer names that might break HS Frosh Class records, as I don't know much about Middle School T&F.
But I WILL say that the easiest marks to be targeted would be the 400, 1500, HJ, TJ, and WT.
(I don't have a Frosh Class Multis mark!  Nor do I have ANY Multis Class Records for HS'ers INdoors!)

10th Grade
6.67, 21.50, 46.84, 1:19.05, 1:51.11, 2:27.59, 3:52.5, 4:09.82, 8:09.86, 8:42.66, 14:54.27, 7.83, 7-2, 25-8.25, 50-2.50, 16-9, 70-5, 75-0.50

The weakest marks here seem to be the 600, 1500, 1 Mile, 5000, and the PV!
About the PV, that mark is "weak" ONLY when we note that Mondo Duplantis's FROSH Class mark is better than the Soph Class Record!!
I would assume Mr Duplantis will take care of that in 2016!
Other than the PV, I don't have any contenders for new Records here, but that 5K mark MUST go!
To have a Record that's about 36 seconds slower than the Grade lower is ridiculous!!

11th Grade
6.64, 20.83, 46.88, 1:17.64, 1:49.94, 2:23.56, 3:47.60, 4:02.21, 8:07.54, 8:40.70, 13:57.04, 7.59, 7-5.25, 25-9.25, 51-8-25, 17-6.25, 71-5, 87-10.75

The best chances for new Records seem to be in the 60, 400, 600, 1500, 1 Mile, LJ, and PV.
Again, I don't have names of possible Record breakers.
But the reason I listed the 1500 and 1 Mile is because of the overall strength of those distances in HS recently.  I see that trend continuing, despite the graduation of two sub-4:00 guys!
Same goes for the PV, for which overall quality of marks is on the rise--pun intended!!

12th Grade
6.57, 20.69, 45.92, 1:17.58, 3:43.27, 3:59.86, 8:05.46, 8:39.15, 14:19.83, 7.57, 7-5, 26-6.50, 52-7.50, 17-11.25, 77-2.50 (63-11 for the 16 pounder!), 93-3.25 (65-8.25 for the International WT!)

Easiest targets are for the 60 and 200 (if Noah Lyles takes a crack at them!), 600, 1500, 1 Mile (See remarks about 11th Grade Records!), 5000, 60H, HJ, TJ, and the PV.
Besides Noah Lyles, I'd suggest new Florida recruit Grant Holloway as likely to break the 60H mark.
(BTW, Florida now has both Lyles brothers (Josephus the other one!) AND Holloway as recruits!)
Also watch for Ja'Mari Ward to challenge the TJ (and maybe even the LJ) Record!
Andrew (Drew) Hunter should be the main distance guy--covering everything from the 1500 to the 5000.

Now for the Women HS'ers.

9th Grade
7.47, 23.55, 53.23, 1:30.1, 2:06.48, 2:50.84, 4:24.4, 4:40.1, 9:42.20, 10:23.46, 17:08.45, 8.44, 5-10, 19-7, 41-2, 12-9.50, 45-7.25, 57-3, 3561 (Pentathlon)

The most likely marks to fall seem to be the 60, 200, 1000, 1500, 3000, 2 Mile, 5000 (See note below!), 60H, LJ, PV, and SP.
As I've often noted, a 7th Grader (Brianna Jackucewitz) ran 16:43.02 (in 2004), so that 5000 mark SHOULD be an easy target!
With the Year of the Vault just behind us, it's amazing to me that no Frosh girl has reached 13 feet yet!
Maybe in 2016?
Girls are more likely to reach Record levels in the lower Grades (9th & 10th) than boys, so watch for some unexpected new Records!

10th Grade
7.24, 23.39, 53.45 (for 440 Yards--no better equivalent mark over 400 meters!), 1:28.87, 2:01.8, 2:47.27, 4:24.25, 4:43.23, 9:29.0, 10:12.95, 16:37.50, 8.17, 6-0.75, 20-5.75, 42-0.50, 13-6, 49-1.25, 58-11, 3846

Most likely to be broken are the 200, 400, 1000, 1500, 1 Mile, 3000, 2 Mile, 5000, LJ, PV, and SP.
I listed the 200 because the past 2 years have produced Pro-quality sprinters (Kaylin Whitney & Candace Hill) in the 10th Grade!
Might we see another one?
All of the distances (with the exception of the 800) are vulnerable, as the distance Renaissance continues unabated!
Watch for Tatiana Marsh in the Horizontal jumps, especially the TJ, as she shattered the Frosh Class mark in the latter last year!

11th Grade
7.24, 23.26, 52.19, 1:29.90, 2:04.96, 2:47.21, 4:11.72, 4:28.25, 9:04.51, 9:38.68, 16:19.69, 8.17, 6-1, 21-4, 42-5.50, 14-0, 52-5.75, 65-4.25, 3827

I'll again pick the 60 & 200 as likely to fall (See 10th Grade note!), as well as the 400, 600, 800, 1000, 5000, 60H, TJ, and the PV.
Lauren Rain Williams returns as a non-Pro Junior, as does Sydney McLaughlin (for the 400 & 60H Records?).
While the PV mark is 14-0, the Year of the Vault insurgence continues, so could fall!
This was Mary Cain's best year, and she wasn't a Pro yet, so her marks should stand!
(Or maybe not!!)

12th Grade
7.19, 22.97, 51.93, 1:29.27, 2:03.59, 2:43.40, 4:18.9, 4:39.0, 9:17.4, 9:55.92, 16:10.79, 8.11, 6-3, 21-7.50, 44-6.75, 14-4, 56-7.50, 68-2.50, 4068

The 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 1 Mile, 60H, HJ, and PV are possible targets.
I'll add the 3000, 2 Mile, and 5000, despite their toughness, because of the large number of DDD-list making runners in the past few years.
I see this trend continuing.
The HJ is dependent on whether Vashti Cunningham competes INdoors in 2016.
The PV is tough also, but, well....!!!

I've decided to do the Collegiate Class Records in a separate post, due to length!
But I do want to finish off the HS ranks, so following are the HS PRO Class Records.
(As noted, there's none for the Men, so all of the following are for the Women!)
All of the marks are for the 12th Grade!

800----------2:05.18
1000---------2:35.80
1500---------4:06.63
1 Mile--------4:24.11

As the only Pro's who remain HS'ers are Whitney & Hill, IF they compete INdoors in 2016, they would set HS PRO Records for the 60 and 200, or whatever events they ran---assuming they won't be invading Cain's (former) HS domain!!

The Collegiate Class Records post will follow in a few hours!

XC & Roads near Finish Line

Except for the Collegiate (NCAA) and High School (NXN & FootLocker) Championship races, the 2015 Cross Country season is done!
As for Road races, today's USATF 12K (See below!) ended the US Road circuit, with only the Fukuoka Marathon featured in the next 46 days of the year!
But hold on to your hats, folks, because (as I've repeatedly said!) the 2015-2016 INdoor Season is coming!
I'll have a bit to say on that later, but let's see how the Collegiates did at their Regionals.

Northeast Regional
Syracuse dominated, beating Iona, 29 to 40  in the Men's division.
Justyn Knight won in 30:28.9, with Colin Benner 2nd less than a second behind.

The Women's team winner was Providence, with 49 points.
Syracuse was 2nd with 92.
Dana Giordano won over Sarah Collins, 20:25.7 to 20:29.0

Mid-Atlantic Regional
Georgetown won for the Men.
Patrick Tiernan won by 26 seconds over Jonathon Green, his time being 30:15.8.
Jordan Williamz finished 9th, time of 31:02.2.

Penn State won the Women's title with 60 points.
Blanca Fernandez won, time of 20:52.0.
Tessa Barrett was 4th, about 10 seconds back.

Mid-West Regional
Oklahoma State won both divisions, taking the Men's with 59 points, and the Women's with 51.
Marc Scott beat Jacob Burcham, 29:37.1 to 29:38.6.
Cerake Geberkidane was 3rd in 29:50.4.

Steepler Erin Teschuk won, time of 20:07.7.
Alyssa Schnadie was 2nd, about 5 seconds behind.

South Central Regional
One team again dominated, here being Arkansas.
They scored 51 in the Men's, and 40 in the Women's.
Brian Barraza ran 30:07.3 for the Men.

Dominique Scott easily beat Maggie Montoya, 19:35.3 to 19:50.5.

Southeast Regional
Thomas Curtin won the Men's race in 29:07.9.
Shaun Thompson ran 29:11.6 in second.
Louisville beat Virginia, 77 to 96 points.

Virginia took the Women's team title.
Letitia Saayman beat Ednah Kiplagat (NOT Edna Kiplagat!!) by 3+ seconds, 20:25.1 to 20:28.3.
Caroline Alcorta finished 14th in 21:11.4.
In 18th was early season sensation Ryen Frazier, who ran 21:22.3.

South Regional
Florida State scored 58 points to take the Men's title.
Antibahs Kosgei won the Individual race in 30:25.66.

Vanderbilt won the Women's team title with 65 points.
Chelsea Blaase won in 20:02.29.

Lipscomb--without Kayla Montgomery!--finished 8th of 30 teams!

Mountain Regional
Colorado took both team battles!
The Men scored 67 points.
It was a close race, with Jonah Koech's 29:57.50 just edging Anthony Rotich's 29:57.59.
John Dressel finished ahead of Ben Saarel, 19th to 21st, their times a second on either side of 30:30!

New Mexico was nipped by Colorado on the Women's side, 49 to 50 points!
Hannah Everson won by 10 seconds over Kaitlyn Benner, 20:45.42 to 20:55.86.
Erin Clark was a second behind Benner.
Courtney Frerichs took 10th in 21:15.35.

West Regional
Washington won the Men 's title with 63 points, 20 less than Stanford scored, with Oregon scoring 99 in 3rd.
Who else but Ed Cheserek won the Individual race, timed in 30:43.2.
John Whalan took second, over 11 seconds behind!
Stanford's Rosa twins finished 6th (Jim) and 8th (Joe), with teammate Sean McGorty between them!

Another tight team battle saw Oregon's Women winning over Boise State, 79 to 80!
Washington and Stanford followed in 105 and 121 points.
(Stanford didn't run either Aisling Cuffe or Elise Cranny!)

Allie Ostrander solidified her favorite's role (or at least CO-favorite with Dominique Scott!!) for the Big Show, winning by almost 22 full seconds over Waverly Neer's 20:32.2.
Maddie Meyers finished 3rd another 5 seconds behind Neer.
(Sarah Baxter did NOT run for Oregon, even though she was listed as a starter.  If I find out differently, I'll let you know!)

So, how does the NCAA race look?
For the Men, I'd go with Cheserek, even though he's rarely raced, and then not that fast.
Thomas Curtin and Justyn Knight appear to be podium contenders.

I'm picking Allie Ostrander to win the Women's race, but she'll have to be in top shape to beat Dom Scott--and Aisling Cuffe, if she's healthy!!

Molly Huddle squashed her (so called) competition in today's USATF 12K.
She ran her slowest race yet (of the 3 she's run), although this was a different course than the last 2 years, timing out in 38:36.
Sara Hall surprised in 2nd, but finished 29 seconds behind Molly!
Alisha Williams, Kim Conley, and Brianne Nelson filled the next 3 places.

The Men's race was a squeaker for Sam Chelanga, as he just nipped Tyler Pennel.
Their times don't reflect how close they were, as Chelanga's time of 34:35 supposedly beat Pennel by two seconds!
It was more like two-TENTHS of a second!!
Shadrack Kipchirchir, Jim Spisak, and Brian Shrader followed in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Kara Goucher easily won the Big Sur Half-Marathon, running a solid 1:11:13.
If she runs anywhere near that kind of race in the Trials Marathon, she'll make the team for Rio!

There were a few notable announcements of HS'ers intentions to run Collegiately!
At least one of them was somewhat surprising, as I thought Noah Lyles was a good possibility to choose the "going Pro" route!

But Noah (AND brother Josephus) said he's (THEY!) going to run for Florida!

Oregon's distance legacy will remain strong, as THREE solid guys said they're going to be Ducks!
They are Levi Thomet, Drew Hunter, and Austin Tamagno!

Also, Khalifa St Fort said she's going to be a UCLA Bruin!

Well, friends, INdoor Track and Field is just FIVE DAYS away!!
(Although the first POSSIBLY good meet is 6 days away, that being the JDL All-Comers meet on the 21st!)

I don't have any names, but it SEEMS like this meet will have a few good people.
Which means we MIGHT see more than just 1 list-worthy mark--like we did last year (Ryen Frazier's HS 4:44.20 Mile!).

Mo Farah said he won't run in the World Championships--even though his NOP team is right there in the Portland area!
He did say he wants to run a fast 3000 in the Glasgow meet.
(See the schedule I provided in my previous post!)

As everyone on the planet knows by now, Russia has been banned from the Rio Olympics--though this is possibly up for an appeal--or a deal!!

More on all the non-Records & Marks news in future posts!

But in the next week, look for more Preview posts for the INdoor season!

Complete Event Schedule--INdoor T&F, Roads, XC

The move towards the 2015-2016 INdoor Track and Field season is now in full transition!
This could (might, will) be one of the best-ever INdoor seasons.

With the Olympic Games set to begin on August 5th (the T&F events!) in Rio, it will be just 138 days to go after the World INdoor Championships end in Portland on March 20th after its 3 day run!
That's a long enough time for athletes to not worry about "peaking too early", or about having to peak twice.
Which could (might, will) set up the WIC for more widespread participation by worldwide elites, and for better results!
Secondarily, for the United States, having the meet IN the US could (might, will) mean a larger group of American elites to try for the team, and to be in top shape!

But how will they get there?
What paths will they take?
Which meets, races, events will they enter?

And what about those who--due to scheduling constraints and school team responsibilities---probably will NOT be in Portland (for either the WIC "Trials"--namely the USATF Championships---or the WIC itself?
I speak of American Collegiate and High School athletes.

Well, to serve as a fairly comprehensive GUIDE to the next few months, I offer the following Schedule of Events--on the Roads, in XC, but most importantly, on the INdoor Tracks and Fields of the United States and the World!
This Schedule is based on the latest information as to Dates, and is presented month-by-month, chronologically.
I will try to inform you of any changes (or additions!) in future posts!

12th--------USATF 15000 Meters Championships
18th--------Front Runners Invitational (Have no idea what this is about, but sounds interesting!!)
18th-20th---WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

While I said earlier (and even said as much in the title!) that this is a "complete" schedule for the next 4 months-plus, it's really no such thing!!
(My own little burst of hyperbole!!  LOL)
BUT---that only means there are TONS of OTHER meets (& Road & XC races) which I did NOT include!
And assuredly, SOME of them will produce some (if not a significant number of!) Top 24 Marks, and maybe a Record or 2 or 3!!
(Which ALSO assumes that a few of the above listed may NOT!!)

As the days and weeks move forward, I'll tell you some of the athletes who announce where they'll compete, and probably some of the WR attempts, which I also expect to hear about in the next few weeks!

I have just a little bit of old Road news to report----some of which I'm probably repeating from an earlier post!!

On September 6th (!!), Shalane Flanagan broke the American Record for the Road 10K, running 31:03 in a Netherlands race.
But winning the race was Genet Ayalew, who ran 30:58.

The Men ran a 10 Mile, with Bernard Koech running a solid 45:21.

In a Valencia, Spain Half-Marathon (October 18th), Abraham Cheroben ran 59:10 for the win, with Matthew Kisorio 2nd in 59:52.
The Women's race was won by Nefaret Gudeta's 1:07:31.
Second, 20 seconds back, came Worknesh Deyefa.

See you in a few days with more INdoor Season Previews!!

ADD:  IMPORTANT NOTE!!
The New Balance INdoor Invitational---the HUGELY significant Boston meet!!--is on February 27th---NOT February 7th, as initially listed!
The date has been changed!
See February 27th listing above!

NYC, XC & Teen Pro's

It's November 1st, and the start of the build-up for the 2015-2016 INdoor T&F season!
Time for R&R is over!

Stanley Biwott and Mary Keitany won the 45th Annual NYC Marathon today!
Slow times, but times in NY come 2nd to who wins, and how they do it.

For Biwott (2:10:34), it came down to a 3-man race, with Geoff Kamworor and Wilson Kipsang.
Then Kipsang fell back, with Kamworor only losing it in Central Park.
He ran 2:10:48, with Lelisa Desisa passing Kipsang for 3rd, 2:12:10 to 2:12:45.

Biwott supposedly ran Miles 20 to 25 in just 22:46--or an average of 4:33.2 per mile, his fastest being a mere 4:21.
WOW!

Forty year old Meb Keflighizi got an "American Master's" record (2:13:32)----whatever that is!
(I only recognize actual Age records, and Meb was nowhere near the Age 40 World Record of 2:08:42!)

Reminding one of Des Linden in the 2015 Boston Marathon, 26.2 rookie Laura Thweatt LED through about 15 miles (or co-led, with Portugal's Sara Moreira), hitting the Half in 1:12:56.
But she wasn't able to sustain the pace--despite appearing to run comfortably throughout--and slowed to 1:15:27 for her 2nd half.

Thweatt is now 19th A-T US (on a list which includes Boston Marathon times!).
Also, it now is necessary to run UNDER 2:29:00 to make my Top 24 US list, as the last of the 2:29's was eliminated by Thweatt's run!

She and Meb both got 7th places!

Nick Arcianaga appears to have dropped out---or finished well back!
Alana Hadley injured her ankle, and was forced to DNF---again!!
(I'll have more to say about Alana later!)

Keitany won by over a minute from Aselefech Mergia, 2:24:25 to 2:25:32.
She hammered 3 late miles in 15:41 (5:13 & two 5:14's) to put the race away!
Before Mergia "emerged"---LOL---Tigist Tufa gave some challenge to Keitany.
But she eventually fell back, when Keitany made her move!

Tufa and Moreira followed Mergia, also under 2:26.

Tatyana McFadden, the most dominant Women's Wheelchair racer of All-Time, won again, destroying the NYC Course Record by about 7 minutes--ending in 1:43:04!!
It was her 12th straight Marathon win!!

Collegiate XC was busy this weekend, with all (or most) of the Conferences being run.
As I've said numerous times, course times aren't really important in XC--just who wins!
Here's the rundown, Conference by Conference.

While MS victim Kayla Montgomery didn't run, her Lipscomb teammates scored a measly 19 points to destroy the field in their Atlantic Sun meet!

The SEC was dominated by Arkansas, with the Men scoring 25 points & the Women 38 points!
However, Alabama's Antibahs Kosgei beat Arkansas's Christian Heymsfield for the Men's win, running 23:24.
The Women's race was all Dominique Scott's, as she beat Chelsea Blaase by 17 seconds in 19:23.
In 22nd was fast 1500 woman Rhianwedd Price.
Nikki Hiltz was 34th.

The ACC races had some interesting results.
Thomas Curtin dueled Justyn Knight, and won by a second in 23:23.
Zak Seddon ended in 38th!

Notre Dame's Molly Seidel and Anna Rohrer went 1-2, but it was no contest, as Rohrer finished 32 seconds behind Seidel's 19:36.
Another top Frosh, Ryen Frazier, came back from a poor race, ending in 5th, 14 seconds behind Rohrer!
Caroline Alcorta was 12th, ten seconds back of Frazier!

The Syracuse Men won with 46 points, while Virginia's Women scored 71 points for the win!

Who won the PAC-12 Individual Men's race?
You have to ask??

Mr Cheserek's time was 23:06, or 7 seconds ahead of Sean McGorty!

While Colorado beat Stanford, 46 to 57 (Oregon 3rd with 83), the Stanford Men had their best squad out there.
After McGorty came the Rosa twins, with Joe in 8th, and Jim in 20th.
Between them came the last 2 HS sub-4:00 milers, with Grant Fisher beating Matthew Maton by 14 seconds and 6 places (11th and 17th).
John Dressel was 6th!

Aisling Cuffe is back all the way!
She won by just 2 seconds over Colorado's Kaitlyn Benner---but she WON!!
Maddie Meyers and Erin Clark followed, completing the group running under 20 minutes!

Waverly Neer was 5th (20:00.6!!), with Anna Maxwell taking 16th, and Sarah Feeny ending in 21st.
Sarah Baxter was just 44th, about 29 seconds behind Feeny!

Colorado's Women beat Oregon's, 45 to 51 points, with Stanford 3rd with 80.

The Big East meet was won by Georgetown's Men and the Providence Women.
G-town beat Villanova by just 1 point, 33 to 34!!
Providence's total was 26 points!

Patrick Tieman took the Men's race, but the listed time of 22:23 was WRONG for the 8K course---unless it was ENTIRELY DOWNhill!!
Jordan Williamz was 5th!
Sarah Collins took the Women's race by 15 seconds over Lauren Mullins.
Bella Burda was the first Frosh in 4th, 20 seconds behind Collins's 19:32.

Oklahoma State's Men (28 points) and Iowa State's Women (63 points) took the Big 12 Conference races.
Vegard Oelstad won with a time of 23:58, one second in front of Jake Burcham.
Cerake Geberkidane was 3rd!

Perez Rotich beat Erin Hooker for the Women's title, both running just under 20:50.

Today's Big 10 meet for Men was won by Michigan's 63 points.
For the Women, there was an upset of sorts, with Penn State beating Michigan, 53 to 58.

Matt McClintock took the Men's race in 23:12 over Mason Ferlick's 23:14.

Erin Finn--frontrunner deluxe!--led all the way, winning in 19:44.9 over Alexis Wiersma's 19:49.9.
The former INdoor HSR holder for the 5000, Tessa Barrett finished in 12th, fading from 5th at 4K.

I saved the Mountain West Conference results for last, because I believe we have the next Women's NCAA Individual Champion who won this race!
Her name is Allie Ostrander, and she just becomes more amazing with each race she runs!
Here, after taking the lead after 3K, she just destroyed the field, winning by over 15 seconds from Courtney Frerichs, who is no slouch!!
Not to mention beating Alice Wright, who finished 4th!

Times were exceedingly SLOW (Ostrander ran 21:49.97!!) for both races, as Jerrell Mock took the Men's race with just 26:16.26.
Either the courses were longer than 8 and 6K, or just VERY difficult.
(I watched the races, and they WERE filled with hills (and a somewhat wet & muddy surface), so maybe those times were legit!)
BTW, New Mexico's Top-Rated Women scored just 24 points for the win!

There was a XC race in Boston--the Boston AA--which had some "name" runners.
Trevor Dunbar took the Men's 8K, his 23:17 beating the unknown (to me!) Jimmy Spisak's 23:20.
Tabor Stevens was 3rd, with Will Geoghegan in 4th.

The Women's race was taken by Liz Costello's 16:35 for the 5K route.
Liv Westphal was 2nd in 16:40.
And "comebacking" Mary Cain was 3rd, another 6 seconds back.
(A bit more on Cain in a minute!)

Cory McGee was 6th, but almost a full minute behind Cain!!

In HS Cross Country, Phil Rocha missed the Mt SAC Course Record by a couple of seconds with his 5K in 14:24--then bragged that he thought it was a "soft" record, and that he could have beaten it with better competition!
(That remark created a bit of controversy!)

Annie Hill, a 10th Grader, beat 4:16+ 1500 Woman Christina Aragon over 3 Miles in the Montana State HS meet.
Her 16:30 beat Aragon by 17 seconds!!

A couple of 10 Mile races had some good results.
In Great Britain, the Great South race was won by Kenyan  Vivian Cheruiyot in 51:17!
But it missed Sonia O'Sullivan's Course Record by 17 seconds!

Jo Pavey, now all of 42 years of age, took 2nd in the British Over 40 Record of 52:44.
(It's interesting that Pavey's time was one full minute slower than Molly Huddle's recent 51:44 over the same distance.  Huddle recently turned 31.  So Pavey was slower by 1 minute, while 11 years older than Huddle!)

Moses Kipsiro took the Men's race in 46:00!

Tyler Pennell took the Pittsburg 10 Miler, running 46:50, beating a couple of Africans!
Buze Diriba took the Women's race in 52:55.

The Frankfort Marathon produced a new National Record for the host country, Arne Gabius's 2:08:33 beating Jorg Peter's 1988 German NR by 14 seconds!

Finally, in the Philadelphia Rock and Roll Half-Marathon, Tim Ritchie ran 61:22 for the win.
He beat Jake Riley's 63:23 by just over two minutes!!

For the Women, it was relative unknown Maegan Krifchin's 69:50 beating Neely Spence Gracey's 69:58.
Krifchin's former PR was 1:10:56!!
(She also has a 2:33+ Marathon PR--which probably isn't long for this world!!)
It was also Gracey's first time under 70 minutes!

So, what about Cain and Hadley?

For Cain, it seems to be all positive!
In a great article (on T&FN's website recently), she was quoted as saying she's happy being in NY and living at home while attending Fordham University.
It sounds as though she has NO intention of returning to Portland, although she says she's in daily contact with Alberto Salazar, who has her working out under the supervision of John Henwood.
She feels she's in great shape, and is happy with her recent XC race results.
She also says she's looking forward to a strong INdoor season!
(Although she didn't specifically say she'd be trying for the US team for Portland's World Championships, I have to assume she'll compete at USATF and (if she makes the team!!) in Portland!)
One possible positive aspect of her move back to NY is that she MIGHT choose to forego "rust-busting" on Seattle's Oversize Track.
After all, she has both The Armory and Staten Island's new INdoor arena where she can open her season!
Why travel 6000 miles (Round-Trip to Seattle) when you've got TWO (legal-size!!) tracks so close to home??

And Hadley?
So sad that she was forced to DNF yet again--especially in such a prestigious event like NY's Marathon!!
But here's the deal!
(And this is ENTIRELY just MY personal opinion!!)

She's been running for 12 years, even though she's just 18 (Born January 8th, 1997!), and has been running Marathons since turning 14!
She had some early success.
After a relatively slow initial race, she sped the Indianapolis course in 2:41:56 in 2013, finishing 2nd Woman to Colleen De Reuck, at just 16.
Then she took 3:22 off that time, winning the Indy race in 2014 in 2:38:34, breaking De Reuck's Course Record!

But since then, it seems to have been one DNF after another.
This despite the fact she says her workouts have been the best-ever!!

My problem with this latest DNF isn't that she DNF'ed---it happens to the best of athletes!---it's that it seems to be becoming a PATTERN!!

And with this ankle problem---not sure how bad it is yet!--it puts her participation in the Olympic Trials race in some doubt!
NYC was supposed to (hopefully) improve her PR by a minute or two, and provide a confidence boost for her OT race.
Forget that!

Let's Run has had a discussion about this----teenagers running Marathons.
Most people believe she should have worked her way UP TO the Marathon distance, rather than basically START FROM that point!!

As I've noted a few times already, she remains the HS Frosh Class Record holder for the 10000 on the track, her Record being 34:59.38 back in 2012, when she was 15.

Imagine what kind of times she MIGHT have run---over 10000 and 5000, especially---if she'd continued as a HS amateur!!

But even though she's now a College Freshman (at University of North Carolina in Charlotte), it's not too late for her to change course--pun not intended, but it works!

If I were her coach (Her father Mark coaches her!!), I would tell her to give the 26.2 mile distance a rest---for at least two years, maybe three!.

I would move her to the Track, and have her start where she WOULD normally start--with the 3000, or even the 1500/Mile!
Run as fast as she can at those distances, training specifically for them, with some (over-) distance work directed at the 5000.
Then, after running, say, 15:40 or better, try the 10K, and attempt to get as close to 32:00 as possible!

THEN, and ONLY then---maybe after those 2 years I suggested---move "up" to the HALF-Marathon.

Lower THAT PR to, say, 1:11 or 1:12 (I believe her Half PR is 1:16:41 from a couple of years ago!), and THEN move up again---to the 26.2 Mile distance!

For a couple of reasons!

She does SOME track stuff now, but IMO not enough!
Especially if she were to delay her return to the 26.2 for awhile!
Get faster!
The faster she becomes at shorter distances, the more confident she'll feel running faster at longer distances.

There's no reason to believe she couldn't improve on that 34:59 by a substantial margin---if she WANTS to!!
(But I think she should HAVE to run Track distances---to get away from her mentality of "Marathon ONLY"!)

Once she's at 32:00 for a Track 10K (or as close to that time as she can get), then she can start training for a Half---knowing she can go out at, say 33:30 pace, and not be even close to her PR!!

If she intends to eventually break 2:30:00 for the Marathon, she'd need a 13.1 Mile PR of about 1:12:00 or faster, to give her the level of confidence needed to go out in 1:15, and keep going!
(How can she go out in 1:15 now---confidently!!--knowing her PR is just 1:16:41??!!)

Yes, a 19 year old African (Shure Demise) ran 2:20:59 in Dubai this year!
But Alana Hadley is NOT Shure Demise!!
Not yet, anyway!

And (IMO), she'll never come close to a time like that if she continues on the path she's on!
For her sake, I hope she thinks long and hard before running another Marathon---even though I know she REALLY wants to run the Olympic Trials race!

As I said earlier, my time of Rest & Relaxation is over!!
With INdoor T&F due to begin (unofficially!) on November 20th (a JDL meet!), it's time for this blog to begin to preview this coming season!
With the WC set for the United States, this INdoor season---at least for the US, if not the rest of the World!---could be one of the best!

Watch for the first of SEVERAL Preview posts---soon!!
