OT's deny many while Pro's romp!

Not to worry!
I'm not going to rant endlessly about the Oversize Track situation on the Collegiate Conference scene this weekend!
I'll let the numbers speak for themselves, in the same way as the Vietnam Wall of Names slams you in the heart when you realize all the hopes and dreams that were KILLED there!
But that's for later!
There were too many LEGAL marks to make your head spin for me to waste more time on OT's!

Keturah Orji remains more than 15 inches behind her OUTdoor Triple Jump PR set in the Rio Olympics!
What she DID do is crush the Collegiate AND American INdoor records---TWICE!!
In the SEC meet, she offed both records with her 1st effort measuring 46-11.75!
Then she matched it with her second round leap!
She also gets the Senior Class record, and the SEC Meet Record!
The latter 2 broke her own marks!
She moves from 5th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 1st!
She moves from 4th A-T US to the top!
She would need to come within an inch of her OUTdoor PR to make the World DDD!!

While we're talking about this incredible athlete, let's see what she did in the SEC LJ!
THREE Women made 22 feet!!
Not sure if that's any kind of record, but I'm sure it's a rarity!
Sha'Keela Saunders topped the trio with her 22-4.50!
She moves from 14th to 8th on the A-T US list!
She moves from 10th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 5th, tied with 1 other!
And guess who she's tied with?
ANOTHER athlete named Saunders!
Daphne Saunders's mark dates from 1994.
(I don't believe they're related!  LOL)
Quanesha Burks took 2nd with a jump of 22-2.25, not a PR.
Then came Orji's 22-0.75.
She moves from 23rd A-T Collegiate, to 12th!
Moved OFF my Collegiate list was Angela Thacker, from 1984!
Orji is now 16th A-T US as well!

Another Saunders--Raven--nabbed the SEC Meet Record with her non-PR Shot Put of 62-6.75!

But a day after most Collegiate Conferences were finished, distance running Professionals (and one well-known Collegiate dude!!) took to the super-fast track at Boston University in a "Last Chance" meet!
First indication things would be hopping was Stephanie Schappert's 4:35.39 in the Women's Mile!
Then came the Men's Mile!

Edward (King Ches) Cheserek said he would chase the Collegiate Record.
And for once, he left his normal jog-kick strategy behind, just like his 3:52.01 left behind a stunningly deep field!!
For Ches, he gets the Collegiate Record, the Senior Class Record, AND the National Record of Kenya!

A bit of explanation!
Bernard Lagat ran 3:49.89 in the 2005 INdoor season, but he had already become a citizen of the United States at that time, but wasn't yet eligible to represent the US on their team!
So Cheserek--even while HE waits for his citizenship papers to come through!--gets the Kenya NR!!
He moves from 21st A-T Collegiate to 1st!
And he's now 12th A-T World!
He'll have to wait to make the US list!!

Kyle Merber followed Ches to the line, and it was VERY close!
Merber's 3:52.22 moves him from 21st A-T US to 6th!
And he makes the World list in 16th place!

Johnny Gregorek's 3:53.15 in 3rd makes him 10th A-T US!
And according to sources, he and Daddy John are now the fastest Father-Son duo in the Mile EVER--although I believe John's mark was made OUTdoors!!
Ford Palmer was 4th in 3:54.92.
Except for those finishing ahead of him, he would've made the US list!
As it is, he misses that list by 0.03 seconds!
Seven others broke 4:00, making it as deep as some of those Bowerman Miles at the Prefontaine Classic!!
Among those others came Dan Huling's 3:57.99 in 5th, which bodes well for his Steeple fortunes!
Knocked OFF the US Mile list was the iconic Dick Buerkle, whose 3:54.93 dated from 1978!!

Then came the 5000's!
It was Molly Huddle and Emily Sisson all the way, as they finished about a minute ahead of 3rd!
It was Huddle's Beast Mode that won the day--and the race!
While Huddle's 15:01.64 wasn't a PR, Sisson's 15:02.10 took away 10 seconds from her previous best--which was, and still is, the Collegiate Record!!
She moves from 7th to 4th on the A-T US list!
And she makes the World DDD, in 19th place!

But it was the Men's race which REALLY rewrote the Record Book!!
While Ben True spoke pre-meet about a possible American Record, early pacing set that idea on the back burner!
What emerged was a RACE for the Ages!
(Including--sic!--a couple of AGE Records!!  LOL)

It was Mo Ahmed who crossed the line first.
His 13:04.60 destroyed the National Record of Canada, giving Ahmed his 3rd INdoor NR!!
It also makes him 11th A-T World!

Eric Jenkins's 13:05.85 gave him 2nd on the US list, and 12th A-T World!!
Ben True was 3rd in 13:06.74!
He gets the Age 31 record!
He's now 3rd A-T US, and 15th A-T World!!
Ryan Hill's 13:07.61 moves him from 11th A-T US, to 6th!
He's now 18th A-T World!

Remember Woody Kincaid?
While at the U of Portland, he beat Mr Cheserek in an OUTdoor 5000!
Well, he obliterated his PR by 30 seconds, his 13:12.22 taking 5th!
He's all of a sudden 8th on the United States DDD!!

Lopez Lomong grabbed the Age 32 record with his 6th place time of 13:12.27, just inches behind Kincaid
But we're not done yet!
Because Kemoy Campbell's 13:14.45 in 7th took down the National Record of Jamaica!
Chris Derrick's 13:19.75 was not a PR!

The Pole Vault saw the usual volume of good marks!
Perhaps leading the way---at least INdoors!--were the Weeks Twins!!
Tori is now a 15 footer!!
She moves from 7th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 6th--thus obviously becoming the 6th Collegiate Woman to clear 15 feet INdoors!
She moves from 23rd A-T US, tied with 2 others, to 19th!
Sister Lexi was once again defeated by her sibling!
Seems her standing as an Olympian doesn't impress Tori enough to scare her into familial submission!!
But Lexi also got over 15 feet, her best mark of 2017!
In 3rd came Olivia Gruver, who PR'ed mightily, all the way to 14-8.75!!
This makes her 16th A-T Collegiate!
But she misses the US list by 1.50 inches!!

Another Olympian--Eliza McCartney--had quite a week in her native New Zealand.
She first went 15-5 in a meet held inside a mall in Auckland!
(At least I THINK it was a mall!!)
Then she went OUTdoors, where her 15-9.75 broke her own OUTdoor National Record!
It also gave her the Age 20 OUTdoor record!
She moves from 15th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 12th, where she's tied with 3 others!

While we're OUTdoors, let's do the other marks I have from there!
Ryan Crouser and NZ's Tom Walsh have had a couple of SP duels!
The best was the most recent, with Crouser covering 72-8 of ground, leaving Walsh's 71-7.25 behind!
For Walsh, this comes toward the end of his summer season.
For Crouser, it's a GREAT early season mark!!

Dani Samuels (now Stevens!) threw the Discus a good 219-1.
And Tara Davis got an OUTdoor PR in the LJ--by one-half inch!
Her 21-1 moves her from 14th A-T HS to 12th!

Also OUTdoors (of course!) was the Tokyo Marathon, where Wilson Kipsang was said to be wanting the World Record!!
And the first 5K split of 14:14 gave fans hope!
But they inevitably slowed, still coming through the Half in 1:01:22!
When the pacers left, he wasn't able to hold it, but his 2nd half of 1:02:36 gave him 2:03:58, the fastest time ever run in Japanese Marathons!!

The Women actually had a better result!
In just her 3rd-ever 26.2 race, Sarah Chepchirchir ran 2:19:47, becoming 16th A-T World!!
In 2nd was Berhane Dibaba, timed in 2:21:19.

Americans did good.
Andrew Bumbalough finished in 2:13:58 in his rookie race!
Sara Hall took 1:40 off her PR to get her first sub-2:30--time of 2:28:26!
She went through 13.1 in 1:13:01, so she slowed to 1:15:25 on the back end!
Still, it makes her 21st A-T US!!

Back to INdoors!
Old news first--
KC Lightfoot PV'ed 17-4.25, making him 16th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
In the Russian Championships, Anzhelika Sidorova PV'ed 15-5 for the win!
It's not a PR.
Emmanouil Karalis PR'ed with a Vault of 18-8.25.
He's still 17 years old, but someone named Mondo is also 17!!
In a good Virginia Tech Challenge meet--
Katie Nageotte and Jenn Suhr went over 15-0 in the PV, Nageotte getting the win!
For Suhr, however, she fills the once-empty slot I had for the Age 35 record!!
Hanna Green sped a 600 in 1:27.39.
She moves from 14th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 2nd!!
And she's now 11th A-T US!
Drew Piazza ran 600 meters in 1:17.26, making him 19th A-T Collegiate!
Neil Gourley ran 1000 meters in 2:20.54, for 15th A-T Collegiate!
And Amber Campbell threw the WT out 76-0.75, breaking her own Age 35 record!!

In old foreign news--
Balazs Baji sped a 60H in 7.54, getting the National Record of Hungary!
Mariya Kuchina HJ'ed 6-8 for the Age 24 record!!
She moves from 18th A-T World, tied with 6 others, to 11th, tied with 3 others!!

In an aside, I should report that over 30 Russians have been cleared to compete as "neutrals"!
BUT---only Darya Klishina will be allowed to compete in next week's European Championships!!
The INSANITY of this entire situation!!!

Genzebe Dibaba went after the INdoor WR in the 1000 in Madrid!!
But Laura Muir's earlier 2:31.93 still remains the fastest 1K of 2017!!
Ms WR---aka G-D---hit 400 in 58.76.
She slowed to an 800 in 2:00.62, which was officially timed, making her 3rd on the Ethiopian INdoor list--and is her PR!
Her final time of 2:33.07 gives her the National Record, and makes her 8th A-T World!

Also in that Madrid meet---
Ruth Beitia HJ'ed 6-6, breaking her own Age 37 record!!
Bralon Taplin ran the 400 in 45.19, a PR by 0.01 seconds!
He remains 14th A-T World!!

The remaining LEGAL marks will be divided into running & field events!
Sasha Wallace ran the 60H at the Mountain Pacific Conference in 7.95.
It's the Meet Record!
Hannah Cunliffe tied Jasmine Todd's MR with her 7.15 win in the flat 60.
Sydney McLaughlin had a great Meet of Champions!
She ran the open 400 in 53.17.
Then she came from way behind on the anchor leg of her team's 4X400 Relay, running 51.8!!
In the BU meet, Nicole Sifuentes won the 3000 in 9:02.61.
Rice's Katie Jensen ran one of the best LEGAL Collegiate 3K's of the year, her 9:05.66 behind Sifuentes giving her an NCAA spot!!
Chris Belcher won the 200 in 20.59.

In field events--
Daniel Haugh's 75-8 WT gives him 21st A-T Collegiate!
Mostafa Hassan's SP measured 69-10.75, and made him 9th A-T Collegiate!
In the SEC, Janeah Stewart got her WT out to 76-0.75, getting her on THREE lists!!
She's 7th A-T Collegiate, 11th A-T US, and 14th A-T World!!
Julian Harvey LJ'ed 26-9.75, making him 18th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
Randall Cunningham HJ'ed 7-5.25 for the Mountain Pacific Meet Record!
Chris Nilsen PV'ed a non-PR 18-5.50.
Annie Rhodes won the Big 12 meet with a Vault of 14-4.50!
And in the foreign INdoor results department--
Angelica Bengtsson PV'ed a non-PR of 15-1
Ivana Spanovic LJ'ed a mighty 22-10!

Sooooo---what kind of damage did having FIVE Collegiate Conference meets on OT's do??
(The 5 meets were the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Mountain Pacific, and the SEC!!)
The answer to the above question will be based on my own interpretation of a good mark!
I had to draw the line somewhere, but the ones I selected either WOULD have made my Collegiate DDD's, and a few even WOULD have broken one record or another---such as Meet or Class records!!
(NO marks from the Big 12 meet are included, as nothing was run there of list-making quality, even with the ILLEGAL assistance of an OT!!)

The ACC had 8 such good marks!
The Big 10 had 12 marks!
Mountain Pacific had just 7 marks!
And the SEC had 11.
THIRTY EIGHT marks which will NOT make my DDD, nor break any records--of any kind!!
But most significant--and DAMNING!!--is that THIRTY EIGHT athletes can not show their grandkids the A-T Collegiate list---the OFFICIAL LEGAL one--to indicate what Gramps or Granny did back in the day!!
No, they'll have to explain to the young 'uns WHY their GREAT mark does NOT appear on such a list!!

Those 38 are---
(ACC) Patrick Joseph 1:46.23, Drew Piazza 1:46.42, Shakima Wimbley 51.20 & 22.83, Hanna Green 2:02.28, Jessica Harris 4:33.80, Grace Barnett 4:33.86, Anna Rohrer 15:38.11, and Michelle Atherley 4281.
(Big 10) Nate Roese 1:16.25, Moujtaha Mohammed 1:16.55, Anthony Johnson 1:16.57 (in heats), Rachel Weber 1:28.11 & 1:28.72, Kerrrington Winters 1:27.60, Daniel Kuhn 1:15.23, Nate Roese 1:15.55, Anthony Johnson 1:15.99 (in the final), Katherine Receveur 15:28.89, Tessa Barrett 15:28.99, Erin Finn 15:32.45.
(Note--A few athletes are listed twice, due to heats and finals results!)
(Mountain Pacific) Colorado 10:58.58, Stanford 10:59.83, Katie Rainsberger 4:35.60, John Dressel 7:51.44, Garrett Corcoran 7:52.10, Matthew Maton 7:52.51, Olivia Baker 2:03.41.
(SEC) Kendell Williams 4686, Taliyah Brooks 4460, Leigha Brown 4379, Daina Harper 51.77 (heat), Fred Kerley 44.94, Akeem Bloomfield 45.49, Jereem Richards 20.34, Jazmin Fray 2:02.62, Texas A&M 3:02.39, Florida 3:02.73, and Alabama 3:02.92.

Now, aren't you thrilled that Ed Cheserak was SMART enough to forego his Conference meet on Seattle's 307 meter monster, choosing instead to head east 3000 miles to Boston University's Record-Friendly 200 meter track??

I am!

Expect my usual Previews for the USATF meet---and MAYBE for the European Championships also!!
These probably won't be out until March 2nd, the day before the meets begin!!
See you then!!

INdoors Preps for Final Push

With the Birmingham (England) IAAF World Tour meet leading the way----and yes, it was maybe the best of the five!--this INdoor season--already a record breaker in many ways--is now down to its final 3 weeks!
In my 4 core groups--World, US, Collegiate, and HS--we've seen a total of 37 records fall--so far!
What's most exciting is that we can expect several more!!
There's some State HS meets, the Collegiate Conferences, and then 2017's Championships--the NBIN, NCAA, USATF, and the European Champs!
Will the record total reach (& surpass!) FIFTY??

Meanwhile, let's see what happened on the tracks and fields of the world this past week!

While no World Records fell there, the Birmingham meet was FILLED with great marks!
Leading the way were two Brits--Sir Mo Farah and Laura Muir--but they weren't alone!

Muir--a strong candidate for World AOY--wanted the British, and maybe the World--record in the 1000.
With Jenny Meadows pacing, the hunt was on!
The first 400 went in 59.6, but she kept it honest through a 600 in 1:29.71--which stat nerds said was a British Age 35 record for Meadows!!
When Muir took over, all eyes turned to the clock!
Slowing to 2:00.56 at 800--not far off her PR!--Muir had already gapped Kate Grace, who had held tight to Muir through 4 laps!
Grimacing, arms pumping, legs almost lactated out, she crossed the line in 2:31.93, a brilliant "solo" race for this fast rising star!

It was the Meet Record and the National Record for Muir!
She's now 2nd A-T World!!

Grace faded in the last lap, but her 2:36.67 makes her 6th A-T US!
Third came Sanne Verstegen, whose 2:38.72, is the Netherlands National Record!
Zoe Buckman's 2:39.47 nabbed yet another National Record--her's for New Zealand!

Pushed OFF my World DDD was the once-golden prodigy--Mary Cain!!
Yes, her 2:35.80 from when she was a 17 year old in her Junior year of HS--is no more!
It's gone--as SHE seems to be this season!!

Sir Mo came through for his adoring fans--in what he announced was his last INdoor track race in his adopted home nation!!
But Kenya's Albert Rop tried to spoil the party!

Taking it to Farah all the way--maybe especially on the last 200--Rop lost ground when they encountered a few lapped runners.
With a first kilometer in 2:36, they were on 13:00 pace!
But they slowed a bit, to about 7:55 through 3000!
At the bell, Farah and Rop timed at 12:12--which put Farah's quest for his own (unratified, for some reason!) British record of 13:10 to the test!
Fear not!
Farah came home in 13:09.16, taking down the National Record, and the Age 33 record!
But he remains 17th A-T World!

Rop's 13:09.43 gave him the National Record of Bahrain!
And he broke Galen Rupp's Age 24 record as well!
He is 18th A-T World!

Two others ran solid times.
Morhad Amdouni's 13:10.60 gave him France's National Record, and the Age 29 record!
He's now 19th A-T World!
Soutiane Elbakkali gets the National Record of Morocco with his 13:11.18!

Mason Ferlic was the sole American, but finished far off pace with a 13:42 and change!

The Women's longest race--a 3000--went to Helen Obiri, who just nipped her own Kenyan NR with her 8:29.41.
She broke her own Age 27 record, and got the Meet Record!
But she remains 10th A-T World!

Sifan Hassan ran 8:30.76 in 2nd, getting the Netherlands National Record.
She's 12th A-T World!
Dawit Seyaum's 8:37.65 misses my World list by 0.18 seconds!
Meraf Bahta's 8:43.00 nabbed the NR of Sweden!
But Shannon Rowbury had a bad race!
She took 8th in 8:45.48!

Elaine Thompson ran just 7.20-ish in her 60 heat!
But she exploded from the blocks in the final, showing why she's maybe the favorite for the OUTdoor WC 100!
Her 6.98 gave her the Meet Record.
And it moved her from 24th A-T World, tied with 6 others, all the way to 7th, tied with 1 other!!
Second was a full 0.19 behind!!
Barbara Pierre was even worse, her 7.20 giving her 4th!

But Thompson's PR did something else!
It removed 3 women of some fame FROM the list!!
Marita Koch is gone, her 7.04 dating from 1985!
Silke Moller is gone too, from 1988.
And Carlette Guidry's 7.04 from 1995 is also gone!

Andrew Pozzi got a 0.01 PR in the 60H, his 7.43 moving him from 22nd A-T World, tied with 6 others, to 19th, tied with 3 others!
Aries Merritt was 3rd in 7.70!

I'll leave the rest of this fine meet to later.
But my pile of great marks is far from finished!!

Sydney McLaughlin finally got the HSR in the 300 she'd been chasing all year!
She blitzed a 36.82--finishing over 2 seconds ahead of 2nd!
It gives her the HSR, the Senior Class record, and the World Age 17 record!!
She moves from 2nd to 1st on the A-T HS list.
On the A-T US list, she moves from 17th to 13th!!

Also at The Armory, 4 Men from the NJ-NY Track Club went after the obscure WR in the 4XMile Relay!
Rarely run anywhere, but especially INdoors, they succeeded--but well short of expectations--and potential!
Their time of 16:12.81 did get the WR (16:16 & change), but when you trash talk about a sub-16--well, sorry, but in this man's opinion, this is maybe the WEAKEST World Record extant!!
BTW, it's also the new American Record!!

As usual, I'll report the rest by event group!
Starting with field events!

Jordan Geist is having a YEAR!
Starting with that 16 lb monster Put of 68-4, he's now taking on Ryan Crouser's more familiar HSR of 77-2.75 with the 12 pounder!
And he's getting CLOSE!!
He first PR'ed last week with 73-10.
And now, suddenly, he's out to 76-10.50, a more-than-3 foot improvement!!
With his first mark, he remained 3rd A-T HS.
But with the 2nd, he moved up one spot, to 2nd!
He's scheduled for 2 more INdoor meets this year!
I'm guessing Crouser's HSR is on its death bed!

Konrad Bukowiecki improved to 69-4.75.
This gave him a significant Age record--that of (then-) 19 year old Terry Albritton, whose 69-0.75 is no more!
A few Women got good marks, with one somewhat surprising!
Anita Marton's 62-3 took the Birmingham SP--but left Raven Saunders's early 62-8 still sitting on Top of the World!!
Dani Bunch's 60-6.50 was good, but not a PR.
The shocker was Danielle Thomas's 60-1.25!
She's a 24 year old Kent State Senior from Jamaica, whose previous best was in the 57's!!
She gets her National Record.
And this makes her 9th A-T Collegiate--though her age gives her some advantage over the Collegiate crowd!

Remember Ida Storm?
She was one of the best Collegians in the WT a few years back, throwing 73 and change!
Well, now a Pro in Sweden, she improved to 77-10.25 in a rarely-held event in Europe (or anywhere else in the World--except the US!).
She got her own National Record, and moves from 20th to 8th on the A-T World list!!

The PV, as usual, was active!
Lexi Weeks seems back in sync, as she whipped out a PV of 15-1, to tie Kaitlyn Petrillose's Soph Class record!
Ekaterina Stefanidi took the Birmingham Vault with a modest 15-2.25!
Nicole Buchler and Mary Saxer reached 14-10.25, while Megan Clark--in her first overseas comp--went out with 14-6.25!
Deakin Volz reached 18-6.75.
This makes him 21st A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other.
Andrew Irwin went over 18-8.25.
Emanouil Karalis got over 18-4.50--still an impressive mark for a Teenager!
Speaking of which, Mondo Duplantis finally took some attempts at 19-1!!
He failed all 3, but still won the Louisiana State HS meet with ease, his 18-8.25 winning by almost 4 feet!!
Morgann LeLeux got over 14-11.50, giving her 19th A-T US!!
(Younger sister Reagann took that Louisiana State meet with a 12 footer!)
Kristen Hixson Vaulted 14-7.25!

Some female HS'ers got good PV's!
Rachel Baxter is moving towards the 14 foot barrier she's surpassed OUTdoors!
Her 13-10.50 makes her 8th A-T HS!
Makayla Linebarger's 13-5 at Simplot makes her 21st A-T HS, tied with 1 other!

Tara Davis didn't set any records, but she did win 3 events in the Simplot Games--all with good marks!
Her 8.22 in the 60H was her best mark, moving her from 15th to 8th on the A-T HS list!
But her 21-2.75 LJ--coming after her HSR of 21-11--is filed under "average"!
As is her TJ of 41-8.75--falling shy of her INdoor PR by just 0.25 inches!!
Still, THREE wins!!

An addendum to a previous report!
Clive Pullen's 56-4.75 TJ is the National Record of Jamaica!

Erik Kynard took the Birmingham HJ with an okay 7-7.
Lorraine Ugen's 22.2.25 LJ B'ham win was also just OK.
Jazmin Sawyers--a VERY talented songstress!--took 2nd with 22-0.25!
(Look for a YouTube video of one or more of her songs--her playing guitar and singing!)

A series of HS field event marks came known to me this week!
Maya Evans LJ'ed 20-3.50, making her 21st A-T HS
Lanae Tava Thomas's 20-3.25 was right behind, making her 22nd A-T HS!
Kathleen Young improved to 52-4 in the SP, moving her from 19th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 12th, also tied with 1 other!
Jake Wickey PR'ed in the WT with 78-0, moving him from 20th to 16th on the A-T HS list!
Shelby Moran's 59-10.25 in the WT makes her 18th A-T HS!

The 300 and 600 saw more good action!
In Ostrava, Bralon Taplin ran the 300 in 31.97.
This gave him the National Record of Grenada and the Age 24 record!
It also makes him 4th A-T World!!
Pavel Maslak missed his PR of 32.15, but his 32.19 in 2nd makes him the Age 25 record holder!
Rafal Omalko's 32.73 gives him Poland's NR, as well as the 24th spot on my A-T World list!!
Tamara Clark ran 37.81, making her 6th A-T HS!
In the Ocean Breeze, Robin Reynolds ran 37.22, making her 18th A-T US!

Also in that Staten Island venue (IMO, the most beautiful INdoor facility!!) came a good Men's 600!
Shaquille Walker took the W in 1:16.11, making him 11th A-T US!
Next came Russell Dinkins's 1:16.40, which makes him 17th A-T US!

Kyle Langford ran the 600 in 1:16.10, giving him the National Record of Great Britain!
But he still misses the World DDD by 0.03 seconds!!
Chris Geisting also sped a 1:16.10, also missing the World list by 0.03!
But he now ranks 10th A-T US!!
In a meet at Clemson, Natoya Goule improved on her National Record of Jamaica with her 1:25.35 PR!
She moves from 10th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 8th!

Besides Pozzi's and Tara Davis's marks, the 60H saw some other decent marks, including a real shocker!!
Jackie Coward won a race in 7.97.

Christina Manning is on a roll!
Her 7.82 PR makes her 22nd A-T World, tied with 7 others!!
She's also now 8th A-T US, tied with 2 others!
She also defeated a good Birmingham field!
Her 7.83 missed her PR by 0.01, but finished well ahead of Sharika Nelvis's 7.94, Sally Pearson's 7.96, and Alina Talay's 7.98!

Klaudia Siciarz ran 8.00, but it gives her the Age 18 record!

The real surprise, however, comes from 25 year old (almost 26!) German, Pamela Dutkiewicz!!
Her pre-2017 best was an 8.07!
(Although she ran the OUTdoor 100H in 12.85 last year!)
She's now sped the 60H in 7.79!!
This suddenly makes her 16th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
And she beat a good one--Cindy Roleder!!
Roleder's PR of 7.84 misses the World list by 0.02 seconds!

Almost forgot!
Kendal Williams (No relation to the female Heptathlete!) sped 60 flat in 6.51.
He ties the Collegiate Soph Class record!
It makes him 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 5 others!
He misses the A-T US list by a mere 0.01 seconds!

I have more stuff, which I'll divide into 3 groups--INdoor LEGAL, INdoor NOT legal (run on OT's!!), and yes, some OUTdoor marks of note!!

INdoor LEGAL
Reed Brown ran the Mile in 4:06.40 for 8th A-T HS!
Omar McLeod showed some talent in a flat race (though with banked curves!!  LOL).
He sped 20.48 over 200 meters to get the Jamaica National Record!
Marqueze Washington took 2nd in 20.56!
McLeod also ran a flat 60 PR of 6.61!
Chad Zallow's 7.61 over the 60H route misses my Collegiate DDD by 0.01 seconds!!

Let's finish off Birmingham!
Ronnie Baker beat Kim Collins in the 60, 6.55 to 6.57.
Pavel Maslak took the 400 in 45.89.
Casimir Loxsom got an 800 PR of 1:46.13, making him 11th A-T US!
Ben Blankenship won the 1500 in 3:36.42!
Ryan Gregson took 2nd in 3:36.50, giving him the National Record of Australia!
Another NR fell to Sweden's Kalle Berglund's 3:37.69!
Zuzana Hejnova's 51.77 took the 400, as Shamier Little was 3rd in 52.11.
With a time SLOWER than what Laura Muir ran enroute to her 1000, Joanna Jozwik won the B'ham 800 in 2:01.02.
Melissa Bishop's 2:02.19 gave her just 4th place!!

HS Soph Arria Minor sped a 200 in 23.65, making her 15th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Katherine Lee's 9:37.77 over 3000 meters makes her 18th A-T HS!
But MUCH more significantly, it erases a real icon FROM the list!
Gone is Ms Lynn Jennings, her 9:42.9 dating from 1978!!

And Penn State's Women ran the DMR in 11:01.16.
It moves them from 23rd A-T School to 20th!

NOT Legal (OT's)
As per normal, the DMR stood front and center among the OT marks I feel reluctant to report, and feel are totally UNfair--especially when said marks are allowed as Qualifiers for the NCAA Champs!!
Anyway, also as per the norm, it was the monstrous 352 yard track at Notre Dame that provided the most NON-legal DMR marks!

Indiana's Women ran 10:55.94.
BYU took 2nd in 10:56.93.
LSU was 3rd in 10:57.66.
Arkansas was 4th in 10:57.93.
And Michigan (minus Erin Finn!!) was 5th in 10:58.02.
BTW, just for your curious minds, if run on a 200 meter track, both Indiana and LSU would have entered my A-T list!!
Sad.

The Men had just one non-legal DMR mark of note--Oklahoma State's 9:28.83.
But 4 more teams finished under 9:32.

Cameron Cooper lost what would have been A-T HS number 2 with his 1:49.82 in the 800!
BUT......!!!
Also in the HS realm of LOST records---
Katelynne Hart ran the 2 Mile in 10:21.41.
This WOULD have been the HS Frosh Class record, BUT.....!!

OUTdoor
Around the world, OUTdoors is HERE!!

Ryan Crouser took on Tom Walsh in his backyard (Well, not literally--but in his home country of New Zealand!!) in the SP!
His 72-4.25 was an excellent start to his WC season!
Walsh also threw a good one, at 70-5!
It gave Walsh his best mark made on NZ soil!!

Symone Mason ran a 400 in 53.26, for a good early OUTdoor HS time!

Then there's Tyrese Cooper!
He ran 3 events in Florida's Louie Bing meet!
His 400 was 45.45.
Not a PR, but still a GREAT mark, early season or not!
(Jamal Walton was a good 2nd in 46.27!)
He sped his 100 heat in 10.70, but ran "just" 10.81 in the final!
His 200 was won in "20.44".
I put quote marks there for a reason--actually TWO reasons!!

One, his time is being questioned by people on the T&FN Message Board.
They noted how close 2nd place was, and that person's time!
They also feel it might have been hand-timed!
Then there's the DQ!
Yes, he was DQ'ed for "taunting"!
At the finish line, he made a "W" with his hands and arms (a la Sir Mo's MoBot pose!), celebrating his win!
The officials called it "unsportsmanlike conduct"--and more specifically, "taunting"!

However, with the time also thrown into question, his DQ becomes moot!

Okayyyyy, we're at the end of this LONGGGGG post!
But I have some news from the Pregnancy Department!!

Sally Kipyego will miss this season to give birth--sometime this summer!
Also due for a summer birth is SP'er Christina Schwanitz!!

These announcements hold heavy significance for the 2017 season, and its WC!
Kipyego's absence leaves a hole in the 10000 field, as well as any fall Marathon she might have run!
Schwanitz's absence makes the possiblity of American Women getting TWO medals in London a real possibility!
That is, assuming Raven Saunders joins Michelle Carter on our team!
(Or Tia Brooks!)

Next week are the major Collegiate Conferences!!
One sad note!
THREE of them--the Big 10, Big 12, and the SEC--will be on OT's!!
In the lingo of the Twitterverse, I am SMH!!

See you soon!

A Leftover's Feast

Leftovers?
Junk mail??
HA!
Just wait till you see what I call "leftovers"--as in "left over" from my just-posted 1st part of a 2-part report!
We'll begin by returning to The Armory for more distance news!!

The Men's Two Mile--featuring Matthew Centrowitz---or so we were repeatedly told by NBC promoters!--was a cornucopia of Top 24 marks---as this rarely run distance usually is---WHEN run by a pack of elites!!
Wanting a 4:04 first Mile, they instead got a 4:07, leaving the American Record intact--as intent and as reality!
At that point, Centro already appeared out of it--and in fact he fell further back!

In a confusing finish line scene, Ben True outkicked (and outwitted?) Ryan Hill to win in 8:11.33 to Hill's 8:11.56!
What was confusing maybe wasn't!
But it seemed as though neither Hill nor True knew where to finish!!
That the tape was stretched out across the 2nd to 4th lanes (!!) instead of by the inside rail, forced True to cut over to where the tape was, while Hill was still in the 1st lane, and didn't have time to react!
Anyway, True's time makes him 3rd A-T US, and 14th A-T World!!
His 3000 split of 7:40.96 is 15th A-T US!

Forced OFF the World list was Doug Padilla's 8:15.02 from 1990!!

Hill's time moves him from 19th A-T US all the way to 4th!
He's also now 15th A-T World!

Britain's Andrew Butchart, who ran that 3:54 Mile last week, took 3rd in 8:12.53!
He's 17th A-T World!

Mo Ahmed took away the National Record of Canada with his 8:13.16.
He's 20th A-T World!

After pacesetter Lawi Lalang's 8:18.70 (Yes, he didn't DNF!) came Garrett Heath in 8:19.61, moving him from 24th A-T US to 9th!
Centrowitz finished 7th in 8:21.07, making the A-T US list in 11th place!
Morgan Pearson (Who??) is now 20th A-T US, with his time of 8:26.17!
Ben Blankenship's 8:27.10 was not a PR!

The Men's Wanamaker Mile was won in 3:53.23 by Eric Jenkins!
This makes him 10th A-T US!
His 1500 split of 3:38.44 makes him 18th A-T US!

Clay Murphy and Kyle Merber finished 2nd and 3rd, but their 1500 splits were reversed, with Murphy kicking past Merber after that point!
Murphy's Mile time of 3:54.31 gives him 16th A-T US, while Merber's 3:54.67 gives him 21st place!
But Merber's 1500 time of 3:38.61 left him 21st A-T US, while Murphy's 3:39.25 gave him 24th A-T US---temporarily!!
Until Merber's faster split knocked Murphy OFF the list!!

Another guy knocked OFF the US list was Alan Webb!
Webb's mark was from 2007!
Then we have Tony Waldrop's venerable 3:55.0 time from 1974!
Yes, he's also GONE!!

Drew Hunter PR'ed in 3:56.80 (and at 1500 enroute in 3:40.87), but ended in 7th!!

Moving OUTdoors for a minute, there was a fast Half-Marathon called "RAK".
Have no idea what that stands for!
Anyway, the great Tirunesh Dibaba finished in 5th with her 66:56 time!
The race was taken by Peres Jepchirchir in 65:06!
She passed 20K in the World Record time of 61:40!
Mary Keitany took 2nd in 65:13.
For the Men, Bedan Karoki led the way with his 59:10.
Second came Yegrem Demelash's 59:19, followed by Augustine Choge's 59:26!
Solomon Yego also got under an hour!

In Japan, Amy Cragg ran a speedy Half in 1:08:27!
I believe this makes her 4th A-T US---on "legal" courses---but I'm not sure of that!

I'll do the remainder by event group, so I'll continue with distance stuff--from 500 meters on up!
In Karlsruhe, Erik Sowinski sped an 800 in 1:46.80.
He moves from 21st A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 19th, also tied with 1 other!

In Torun, Joanna Jozwik nabbed Poland's National Record for the 800 with her 1:59.29--her 1st sub-2 INdoors---or OUTdoors!!
Her 1:27.40 split at 600 is also a NR for her!
But she misses the World list by 0.39 seconds!!
Anita Hinriksdottir took 2nd in 2:01.56!
Nicholas Kipkoech took the Men's race in 1:46.34, beating Adam Kszczot's 1:46.44, and Erik Sowinski's 1:46.84!
Bethwell Birgen took the 1500 in 3:37.63.

In the Ocean Breeze, Siofria Buttner took the Mile in 4:33.16, missing the Collegiate list by 0.12 seconds!
At BU, Lauren Johnson beat Sasha Gollish in the 1000, 2:40.63 to 2:40.99.
In another Men's Mile at Millrose, Christian Soratos sped a 3:54.23!
This makes him 14th A-T US.
His 1500 split of 3:38.27 also gives him 14th A-T US!
DJ Principe ended in 5th with his 4:02.96!
In the 1000, Brannon Kidder's kick prevailed in 2:19.92 over Cazimir Loxsom's 2:21.06!
HS'er Brandon McGorty was 7th in 2:24.13.
He moves from 13th A-T HS to 6th!

Vernon Norwood took a quick 500 at Millrose, timed in 1:00.11.
He beat Brycen Spratling's 1:00.90, and Bershawn Jackson's 1:01.17!

The Women's 3000 was won by Kate Van Buskirk's 8:52.08.
Stephanie Garcia ran 8:53.48, while Tori Gerlach ran 8:54.61.

The Boy's HS Mile was good.
Noah Affolder's 4:07.34 makes him 12th A-T HS, and his 1500 split of 3:50.87 gives him 12th A-T HS.
Brodey Hasty was 2nd in 4:08.04, for 19th A-T HS.
Dalton Hengst was next in 4:08.99.
But the latter pair's 1500's were reversed!
Hengst split 3:52.05, making him 18th A-T HS, while Hasty's 3:52.44 gives him 20th A-T HS!

Don't know if Curtis Beach will continue as a Decathlete, or turn to running full time!
But he's improving in the latter, as his 600 of 1:16.61 proves!
He's now 17th A-T US!!

Also in the distance genre, but on Oversize Tracks, are the following---
In Seattle, Ed Cheserek ran a 5000 in 13:32.59, with Colby Gilbert following in 13:34.85!
Katie Rainsberger took the Seattle 3000 in a good 9:01.21!
Too bad it was for naught, Record Book-wise!!
Dani Jones took 2nd in 9:02.22.
Ten finished under 9:07, and 14 under 9:10!!
Danae Rivers ran a useless 4:32.55, while Lopez Lomong and Evan Jager did the same with their matching set of 3:56.55 Miles!!
There were 9 sub-4's!
In the SPIRE, Erin Finn ran an OT 5000 in 15:34.36!

Let's move to field events!
Besides Mondo Duplantis's latest HSR (See my earlier post!), Chris Nilsen took over the Collegiate PV lead with his PR of 18-8.25!
He missed the Frosh Class record by one-half inch!
But he's 12th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!

The Millrose Women's event saw Ekaterina Stefanidi beating Sandi Morris, with the Greek reaching 15-9.75!
Morris tried passing tactics, but her attempts at 16-1.75 failed.
She ended with 15-5.75.
Katie Nageotte got a quarter-inch INdoor PR of 15-1.75 in 3rd!
She remains 11th A-T US, but she now isn't tied with anyone!

In the Tyson meet, Arkansas's Women's PV Factory took 1st, 2nd, and 4th!
Tori and Lexi Weeks had matching 14-7.25's, but Tori prevailed.
Desiree Freier showed good form, reaching 14-3.25 in 4th!
Emily Grove's 14-5.25 was 3rd, with Olivia Gruver matching Freier's mark in 5th!

Other marks included---
Raven Saunders SP'ing 61-0.
Yanis David suddenly a Collegiate TJ factor, her 45-8.50 making her 12th A-T Collegiate!
She's a Florida Soph!
Shendia Lawrence jumped 45-1.50, making her 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
(I hope these two marks aren't just TFRSS fuck-ups!!  LOL)
Alina McDonald PV'ed 14-3.25 in Nashville.
In the Tyson meet, Jamaica's Clive Pullen took the Collegiate TJ lead with his 56-4.75.
This makes him 11th A-T Collegiate!
Also at Tyson, JaCorian Duffield HJ'ed 7-6.50, while Clayton Brown reached 7-4.25!
Jared Kern's 67-2 took over the Collegiate SP lead!
Becky Arbiv PV'ed 13-7.
She moves from 18th A-T HS to 14th, tied with 1 other!
Carson Dingler's 13-6 moves her from 21st A-T HS, tied with 6 others, to 18th, where she's tied with 1 other!
Bronson Osborn threw the 16 pound SP out 59-5.75!
OUTdoors, Osborn threw the same weight implement 58-10!!
Also OUTdoors, Robbie Otal got the earliest-ever 200-plus DT--reaching 201-7!

Tyra Gittens LJ'ed 20-11.50, making her 5th A-T HS!!
In Torun, Nicole Buchler won with a 15-1 PV.
Logan Cunningham PV'ed 18-4.50.
In the Dallas meet, Tripp Piperi PR'ed with a 72-5 SP, but he remains 4th A-T HS!
In Berlin's LJ, Ivana Spanovic leapt 22-6.50!
Maggie Ewen's getting better!
Her SP measure of 59-5.50 makes her 11th A-T Collegiate!
She misses the US list by 1.25 inches!
She also threw the Weight 70-1.

And now to the short stuff!!
And, bless those who lose good marks on OT's, but I'll start with Brian Herron's OT 400 of 47.24, which WOULD make my HS DDD---if legal!!

Ronnie Baker ran the fastest 60 of the season, his 6.46 PR moving him from 17th A-T World, tied with 7 others, to 12th, where he's tied with 5 others!!
On the US list, he moves from 11th, tied with 3 others, to 7th, tied with 4 others!
Orlando Ortega sped the 60H in 7.48 in Torun.
Barbara Pierre took the Torun 60 in 7.11, after a 7.13 heat.
Bralon Taplin took the 400 in 45.59.
Mikiah Brisco's 7.98 in the Tyson 60H makes her 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 5 others!
She also took 2nd in the 60 flat with her 7.22.
Grant Holloway ran the 60H in 7.58, just 0.01 off the Frosh Class standard!
But he makes 16th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others!
Daryll Haraway sped 60 flat in 6.59.
Jouranne Olivier ran the same in 7.19.

In the Millrose meet, Dezerea Bryant took the flat 60 in 7.12, with Morolake Akinosun 2nd in 7.17.
Clayton Vaughn edged out Mike Rodgers in 6.62.
Omar McLeod and Phylicia George took the Millrose 60H races with respective times of 7.46 and 7.98.
In the Don Kirby meet, Jaylen Bacon ran 6.59, while Rai Benjamin took the 200 in 20.76.
The Tyson meet had a deep Men's 200!
Just'n Thymes prevailed in 20.47, but he misses the Collegiate DDD by 0.01 seconds!
In 2nd & 3rd came Rondel Sorrillo and Nathaneel Mitchell-Blake, both timed in 20.49.
In 4th was stud Frosh Michael Norman, eeking out an 0.01 PR of 20.75!
Sage Watson took the Don Kirby 400 in 52.00.

Some okay Relay action happened too!
At Clemson, as briefly noted in my earlier post, Texas A&M's Women ran the 4X400 in 3:29.74!
That's where Jazmin Fray--brand new CR holder in the 800--ran her 51.9 leg just one hour after that CR!!
A&M missed their School record by 0.02 seconds!!
Alabama took 2nd in 3:30.10, making them 9th A-T School!!
At Tyson, Texas's Men ran the 4X400 in 3:04.88.
They move from 14th A-T School, tied with 1 other, to 11th!
Texas Tech's 3:05.49 moves them from 19th A-T School to 17th!
And Iowa's time of 3:05.62 makes them 19th A-T School, tied with 1 other!
Also from Tyson--
Michael Cherry ran the 400 in 45.84.
Kendall Ellis ran the 400 in 52.13.
In a separate race, Chrisann Gordon sped 51.71, just 0.02 seconds off her PR!
Chrishuna Williams was 2nd in 52.02.
Remember me mentioning Candace Hill's 53.05 3rd place finish in the Clemson 400 behind Shakima Wimbley's winner?
Wimbley ran 51.53, making her 16th A-T Collegiate, and 19th A-T US!!

I want to end this post with some marks worth remaining awake for, so first let me add another OT mark or 2.
From Ames, Iowa's OT came Karissa Schweizer's 9:06.60 3000, and an 800 that saw Shea Collinsworth's 2:01.42 prevail over Ailiyah Miller's 2:02.89.

Returning yet again to Millrose, there was a HOT Women's 300!!
Just as with the more successful effort by Sammy Watson in the 800 (See my earlier post!), Sydney McLaughlin was also looking for a fast time--but in this 300!
She DID get a slight PR--by 0.02 seconds--but her 37.09 gave her just 4th place in a field of Professionals!!
Shaunae Miller ran 35.71, moving her from 5th A-T World to 3rd, where she's tied with 1 other!
(Her tie is with Quanera Hayes, who ran her 35.71 earlier this season!)
She got the Meet Record, and the Age 22 record!
Ashley Spencer took 2nd in 36.27.
She gets the Age 23 record!
She's 3rd A-T US, and 7th A-T World!
Natasha Hastings's 36.88 in 3rd gets her the Age 30 record!
Then came McLaughlin's 37.09 in 4th!
She remains 2nd A-T HS!
But, because of Spencer's entrance to the US list, McLaughlin is moved DOWN from 16th to 17th!!

The Nitro series ended---and good riddance to it!
The results emanating from it were ridiculous!
(In another of those 3 minute races, one couple's winning total was 2765 meters!!  Think about this for a second!  In 3:00, could a woman run, say, 1265 meters, while a man ran the other 1500??  In THREE MINUTES???)
Maybe it was just the results that were screwed up, but I'm of the opinion---DESPITE the sexy presence of Usain Bolt and Gen Gen LaCaze---that this is one idea ready for the DUMPSTER!!

Over and OUT of here!!

P.S.
Despite the IAAF meet in Birmingham, next weekend looks to be a lot quieter than THIS week was!!
Then again, maybe not so much!
See ya!

Want Records? I Got 'Em!

Millrose was supposed to be the main attraction of the week!
And it produced!
But so did several other venues--and athletes!
I have a mountain of material, so let's go to The Armory!

That Women's 800!
In a sensational race, Ajee Wilson followed the rabbit through a 57.4 first 400, with Charlene Lipsey right behind, and even HS'er Sammy Watson at 58.2.
The train continued through a quick 600 in the 1:27's, with Watson at 1:29, and not dying.
It was a tight race for the front pair, but stoic & steady Wilson kept Lipsey heeled.
That fast pace, and the tight race brought home TWO women UNDER the American Record of Nicole Teter, on the books since 2002!

Wilson ran 1:58.27, collecting the Meet Record as well as the AR.
She moves from 11th A-T US to 1st!
The last woman to make the World list was in 2012.
And the only 2 Americans to make that list were Teter and Mary Slaney, who held the 24th spot!
No more!!
Slaney is OFF the World list, her 1:58.9 dating from 1980!
Wilson grabs 13th A-T World!

Lipsey finished strong, timed in 1:58.64, becoming 2nd A-T US, and 19th A-T World!

Far back in 3rd came Lynsey Sharp, then Cecilia Barowski, having a good year!
Her 2:01.52 gave her 23rd A-T US, tied with 1 other!
And she knocked two name vets OFF the list!
Regina Jacobs and Amy Wickus are GONE, Jacobs from 2000, and Wickus from the mid-90's!

And then came Ms Watson!
Watching the race on NBC, the camera focused on the first 2, I sat screaming at my screen---Come on, Sammy, GO!!
And she did, JUST nipping Mary Decker Slaney's venerable, iconic, and most historic HSR of 2:01.8, dating from 1974!!
Her 2:01.78 (WHEW!!) gave her the Senior Class Record as well.
She moves from 3rd to 1st on the A-T HS list!
Her splits were 58.20 and 63.58!

The Millrose Women's Mile was fast too, but so was a Women's Mile the day before at Boston University!!
Let's explore both!

In a totally unexpected race, 3 of the best US distance runners took to BU's track!
At the end, it was Shelby Houlihan's scintellating kick that led to a rewritten Record Book!
Her 4:24.16 defeated Colleen Quigley and Rachel Schneider!
She's 5th A-T US, and 18th A-T World!
Quigley's 4:24.88 makes her 7th A-T US, and 23rd A-T World!
Schneider's 4:25.62--bettering her 4:28.03 PR from last week!--moves her from 20th A-T US to 8th!!
Megan Krumpoch's 4:32.03 was a solid 4th!

And knocked FROM the list is Francie Larrieu, my first female runner crush!!
Her 4:29.5 dated from 1975!!

Now let's see what FURTHER damage the Millrose race did!!

In a race supposedly set up for Shannon Rowbury to again chase the American Record, there were--um--surprises!
First, the pace was off by 2 seconds at the half--2:11 to the wanted 2:09!
Second, new NOP member and Rowbury training partner Sifan Hassan taught Shannon a lesson or two!
Pulling away with over 2 laps to go, Hassan gapped Rowbury, while Kate Grace smelled blood!

Sprinting to tthe tape, Hassan's 4:19.89 made her 4th A-T World!
She also collected the Netherlands National Record, the Millrose Meet Record, and the Age 24 record!

Grace kicked past Rowbury to take 2nd in a BIG PR of 4:22.93.
She got the Age 28 record, while becoming 8th A-T World, and 4th A-T US!!
Rowbury finished in 4:23.05, short of her PR, and AGAIN failing to take down Slaney's iconic standard!

Heather Kampf followed in 4:28.39
Then came Dominique Scott-Erfurd's 4:28.47 National Record of South Africa!!
Kaela Edwards had said in a pre-meet interview that she wanted the Collegiate Record--and she went for it!
But her 4:28.75 wasn't really close, although she moves from  16th A-T Collegiate to 7th!!
Nicole Sifuentes reliably came next, followed by another Collegian, Elinor Purrier!
Purrier's PR of 4:29.44 wasn't enough to move her out of 8th A-T Collegiate!
Alexa Efraimson--one week away from her 20th birthday--ran 4:29.54.

One of my common rants has to do with the failure of timers to time 1500's enroute to Miles!
While Millrose came through, as expected, BU did not!!
Thus, 3 CERTAIN PR's for the 3 BU women mentioned above were lost to history!!
(Unless they suddenly turn up, in which case I'll do my usual mea culpa!!  LOL)
For the Millrose group, however, Hassan's 1500 wasn't a PR.
As told above, Grace kicked past Rowbury late in the race!
So Rowbury had a faster 1500 split--4:04.56--which moves her up one spot on the US list, from 4th to 3rd!
Grace's 4:04.86 gives her 5th A-T US!

Collegiate runners rarely get 1500 splits---or race open 1500's!---so Edwards's 4:11.00 makes her 3rd A-T Collegiate.
Purrier's 4:12.35 split gives her 9th A-T Collegiate!!

In keeping with this post's title's theme, let's see what Genzebe Dibaba has been up to!
Would you believe ANOTHER World Record---this time over the 2000 meters distance!
In what amounted to a solo time trial (2 women finished about 30 seconds back!) in Spain, Dibaba cruised around the track at a steady clip, her 5:23.75 chopping almost 7 seconds from Gabriela Szabo's 5:30.53 WR of 1998!
Her splits were 2:42.65 and 2:41.10 for each kilometer!
(Her time is faster than Sonia O'Sullivan's OUTdoor WR--but let's not get into that!!)
Genzebe gets her own Ethiopian National Record, and the Age 25 record!
In fact, this race took place on her LAST day as a 25 year old!!
She moves from 2nd to 1st on the A-T World list!!

She went after her own 1500 WR too, this time in the IAAF World Tour meet in Torun, Poland.
Well, she WANTED to go after it---but her pacer wasn't up to the task!
Instead, Dibaba had to settle for a mere 3:58.80--which still gave her the Age 26 record!
(She ran that two days after turning 26!)
In second came Axumawit Embaye's 4:04.95!

Two Collegiate Records fell in separate meets!
In the altitude-aided Don Kirby affair in Albuquerque, Hannah Cunliffe sped 60 meters in 7.07 to take down Ramona Burchell's 7.08 from 2015!

I have a little story to go with that!
Seeing the time on Twitter, I instantly noted it was a CR!
(Kiss me--I'm an expert!!  LOL)
BUT---all the tweets I saw---from reputable sources---ALL said it was an "All-Conditions" best!!
They made NO mention of it being an outright Collegiate Record--no strings attached!!
I sent a few tweets to these sources, but to no avail!
That is, until a tweet from TFCCCA (Coaches Association) finally said the same!!
The falsehood emanated from the method TFRSS uses to "convert" times (from flat to banked tracks, and for altitude), where they "assigned" a time of 7.09 to Cunliffe, adding 0.02 to her REAL Collegiate Record!!

Confusion, confusion!!

Cunliffe also gets the Junior Class record, the World-leader, and the Age 21 record!!
She moves from 5th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, to the top!
She also moves from 21st A-T US, tied with 4 others, to 11th, where she's tied with 1 other!
But she wasn't done!
She added a 22.60 200, which makes her 11th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
She's now 11th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
Ariana Washington was 2nd, her 22.80 making her 24th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other.
As well, she's now 22nd A-T US!

The other CR came out of the blue from Jazmin Fray!
In the Clemson meet, Fray--who surprised with that 2:43.15 1000 back in December--ran a solo 2:00.69 to claim the CR for 800 meters!
Second was over 4 seconds back!
Her splits were 58.96 and 61.73!
She also gets the Collegiate Soph Class record, and adds 17th A-T US to her collection of goodies!
Then--about an hour later--she ran a remarkable 51.9 as 3rd leg of her Texas A&M team's 4X400 Relay!
I'd say she has a sub-2:00 in her, wouldn't you??

The Millrose Women's 500 produced another American Record!!
In a 500 that saw the return of Alysia Montano (with flowers on her shoes, as well as in her hair!--she's currently sponsorless!!), Courtney Okolo sped the distance in 1:07.34, making her 3rd A-T World, as best as I can tell!
(I don't have lists for the 500!)
Montano finished in 1:09.55, just ahead of Delilah Muhammad's 1:09.66!
Okolo also gets the Meet Record!

A pair of HSR's fell in field events!
In a "Boy's" PV competition at the Millrose meet, Mondo Duplantis made 18-2.50, 18-8.25, then his latest HSR of 18-10.25 on first tries!
He declined to go further--the 19 foot barrier now less than two inches away!!
(His father Greg's OUTdoor PR is 19-0.25, so we could soon see the first-ever Father-Son combo of 19 footers---even though I never compare INdoor to OUTdoor marks!)
He broke his own HSR, as well as his own Junior Class record, and Age 17 record!!

Tara Davis--also known as a good hurdler and TJ'er--got another "ancient" HSR--this one now previously owned by one Carol Lewis, her LJ mark of 21-7.25 dating from 1981!!
Davis's 21-11 also got Lewis's Senior Class record!!
She moves from 7th A-T HS to 1st.
And she becomes 20th A-T US, tied with 1 other!!
But wait, I'm not finished!!
She also gets a record held by the venerable Heike Drechsler, whose Olympic-sized career of over 20 years is historic to the nth degree!!
Davis took the Age 17 record away from Drechsler!
However, she'll have to improve by a foot to get Drechsler's OUTdoor Age 17 record!
Davis will only have until her 18th birthday on May 20th!!

(PAUSE)

Let me explain a bit what I'm doing here!
I'd WANTED to divide my report into two posts---one entirely for the Millrose meet, the other for all the rest of my pile of great records & marks!
But with this week producing so MANY Records---across the spectrum!---I decided to go with the major records in the first post---this one!---saving all the rest for a second post!!
And that's basically what I'm doing!
Don't fret, though, because what I'll include in my 2nd post will be enough to sate the appetites of starving dieters!!
I'll continue with more records now!

Several Class Records fell---in both the Collegiate and HS realms!

Trey Knight came from the skies to tear apart the HS Frosh Class record in the Weight Throw!
His 71-3.50 added almost 6 feet to the old mark!!

Katelyn Tuohy removed one of Mary Cain's Class Records--in the 1000!
She gets Cain's Frosh Class mark---by about three seconds!!
And becomes 17th A-T HS with her time of 2:47.86!!

Gleb Gudorev continues to amaze!
Remember, he's the dude who came to Kansas State from Europe, and suddenly emerged as a threat to WT'ers everywhere!!
His 76-11 added about 18 inches to his recent PR, breaking his own Frosh Class record!
He moves from 21st A-T Collegiate to 16th!
And he misses the World DDD by less than 5 inches!!

Fred Kerley ran 45.02 for 400 meters in the Clemson meet to nab the Senior Class record, as well as the Age 21 record!!
He's now 4th A-T Collegiate.
He's also 4th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
And he's 5th A-T World, also tied with 1 other!!

Keturah Orji is still two feet shy of her Rio OUTdoor PR, but her 46-3.25 TJ claims the Junior Class record!!
She fell just 0.75 inches shy of her INdoor PR!!

Tyrese Cooper becomes more and more unbelievable every time he steps on a track!!
In his latest attack on the HS record book, he came THIS close to getting the HSR in the 400 meters!!
The 45.92 by Elzie Coleman has been the HSR only since 2004, but it seems much older!!
(Maybe because no one's come closer than 46.57 since then---until Cooper came on the scene!)
Well, now that Cooper has run 46.01--taking 2nd in a race at the Tyson Invite--Coleman's record is on Death Row!!
He gets the Soph Class record, and becomes 2nd A-T HS!!
But this phenom wasn't done!!
Finishing 3rd behind super vet Wallace Spearmon, Cooper ran the 200 in 21.12, finally getting the Soph Class record that eluded him last week!!
He moves from 15th A-T HS , tied with 3 others, to 11th!
Spearmon won with his 20.69!

Lauren Harris IS the best female HS Walker extant!
She again broke a HSR--this time for the 1500 meters!
Her time was a nifty 6:17.59!!
(To give you some idea of this young lady's talent--and potential!!--the great US Walkster Maria Michta-Coffey took the Millrose Mile in 6:31 and change!!  Oh yes, Michta-Coffey mentors Harris!!)
Harris got the Mile Walk record last year!!

Since this post is mainly about Records, I'll close with one for the HS PRO division!!
Candace Hill--who turned 18 yesterday!--got her THIRD record in my self-devised Record Section!
While losing the race to Shakima Wimbley (more on her in the next post!), Hill's 4th place time of 53.05 claimed the 400 meter HS PRO mark!!
And the HS PRO Senior Class record!!

In fact, this 3rd record now puts Hill in elite HS PRO territory!
Mary Cain also has a trio of HS PRO records!!
And because Hill had TWO years to collect records of this kind---to Cain's one year!---she now owns MORE HS PRO Class Records than Cain---4 to Cain's 3!!

On THAT note, I'll close this baby and send it to you, my loyal readers!
Expect the second post in a few hours!

Broken Record (of) Records Broken

Cute title, eh?
(And sorta touches on theme of Bob Dylan's "Everything is Broken" song from the late 80's!)
But the title fits, because just as I outlined the steady line of records broken in the 2017 INdoor season in my last post, here comes several MORE!!
And 3 of those record breakers are quite familiar to us!

Tyrese Cooper continues to amaze!
Amongst a trio of efforts in The Armory Track Classic came Cooper's 32.87 in the 300 meters, taking down his own HSR of 33.03 from a few weeks ago!
He also got his own Soph Class record and Age 16 record!
He moves from 17th A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 14th!
He misses the World list by just 0.12 seconds!!

Cooper actually took 2nd in the race to Trinidad & Tobago's Lalonde Gordon's 32.37!
He gets the Age 28 record!
He broke his own National Record!
And he moves from 9th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 8th!
Cooper also sped a 60 in  6.79, and the 200 in 21.28!
The latter was widely reported (by Flotrack and Mile Split, to name two!) as the Soph Class record!!
But readers of my blog know that Brian Herron beat him to it, running the Soph Class record time of 21.22 in early January!!
I tweeted them about it, but never received a reply!
Proves that if you want the FACTS, come to my blog!!
LOL

The Armory meet saw another HSR smashing!
Again, this one came from a woman who'd been there, done that!
Sammy Watson obliterated her own HSR in the 600 by 1.54 seconds, her time of 1:27.13 beating an Olympian at 800 meters, Lynsey Sharp!!
But let's cover the whole race!

Ajee Wilson was on a mission--and it was mission accomplished!
After running 1:25.23 last week (See a previous post!), she wanted a sub-1:25, and she got it!
Her 1:24.48 broke her own Age 22 record!
In fact, the only 2 sub-1:24 times came from women 4 & 5 years older than her!
She remains 2nd A-T US, and moves from 5th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 4th!

In 2nd came Cecilia Barowski, whose 1:26.74 makes her 7th A-T US!
She misses the World list by 0.18 seconds!!

Then came the incredible Samantha Watson!
She got her own HSR, Senior Class record, and Age 17 record!
She is now 8th A-T US!!
But maybe the most astonishing fact is this--
If she were in College right now, this would be the A-T Collegiate Record, smashing Heather (Dornidan) Kampf's 1:27.78!!
This maybe goes beyond Mary Cain territory!
When Cain was still an amateur, I remarked on where her HSR's would place her if she were then a Collegiate!
Well, Watson is THERE now too!
NONE of Cain's numerous HSR's (as an amateur!) would have "broken" a Collegiate Record!!
Ms Watson's 1:27.13 would!!

Next came Lynsey Sharp--timed in 1:27.16!
Then followed (in 5th) Meg Manley's 1:27.97, which makes her 15th A-T US!
In 6th was Olicia Williams, whose 1:28.20 makes her 21st A-T US, tied with 1 other!

Another "odd" distance record fell!
Sage Watson, a star 400H gal from Canada, ran 500 meters in 1:08.40 for the Collegiate Record!
She also got the National Record!
(I don't have lists for this distance, but she places 5th A-T World, I believe!)

Then there's Mondo Duplantis!!
He'd already broken (his own) HSR in the PV TWICE this season--in the same meet!!
Well, he did it again!
Beginning after everyone else was finished (in a HS meet at LSU), he cleared 18-6.50 to break his record of 18-5!
Then he went over--cleanly!!--18-9.25 to leave the earlier record in tatters!!
Besides the HSR, he gets his own Junior Class and Age 17 records too!
(Twice each!)
If a Collegiate, he'd rank 10th A-T!
He misses the US list by 3 inches!

That takes care of the Major Records this week!
BUT a large assortment of "lesser" records (There really are none in this blog!!) went under!
Enough that I'll do the rest by event group, such as sprints, jumps, etc.

Distances (600 on up)
The 600 was explosive this weekend!
Besides the aforementioned, Courtney Okolo solo'ed a 1:25.21 in Nebraska!
This makes her 3rd A-T US, and 6th A-T World!!
Does she have intentions to add the 800 to her repertoire??
Strymar Livingston ran his fastest NCAA Division One 600, time of 1:16.93, also in the Nebraska meet!
But, as a Junior College athlete in 2015, he ran 1:16.53, his PR!
I carry that mark on my Collegiate DDD, since I believe that a College is a College is a College!!
In New Mexico, Vincent Crisp ran 1:17.60.
Behind him came a familiar name to Multi's fans--Curtis Beach!--who ran 1:17.72!
Rodney Agyare-May ran 1:18.40, moving him from 11th A-T HS to 4th, tied with 1 other!
(In a meet at BU, Carly Muscaro ran the 500 in a good 1:09.05!)

Emmanuel Korir ran the 800 in a non-PR 1:46.75!
In a quiet year for this INdoor 4-lapper, Anita Hinriksdottir, that still-young (Turned 21 on January 13th!) veteran from Iceland, broke her own National Record with her 2:01.18!
Rachel McArthur ran the 1000 in 2:48.35, making her 19th A-T HS!
The 1500 and Mile have been quiet also this year!
But Brit Andy Butchart sped a 3:54.23 in his first-ever Mile under a roof!
He beat Ford Palmer by just over 4 seconds!
Rachel Schneider PR'ed with her 4:28.03
She moves from 23rd A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 17th!
Cory McGee was a solid 2nd with her time of 4:30.03!
In the BU meet, Joel Hubbard ran 3:59.37, while Megan Krumpoch won her race in 4:35.43.

Laura Muir is suddenly the HOT item in the distances!
(We're still waiting to see Genzebe Dibaba and Almaz Ayana et al this season!)
A month ago, she ran that 14:49 over 5000!
Now, in a great battle with Helen Obiri over 3000 meters in the Karlsruhe IAAF World Tour meet, Muir prevailed again!
Running just behind Obiri through the first 12 or 13 laps, she attacked, opening an ever-widening lead, her time of 8:26.41 giving her the Meet Record and the British National Record!
While not getting the Age 23 record, she does become 5th A-T World!!
Obiri held on to break her own National Record of Kenya, time of 8:29.46.
She gets the Age 27 record!
And she is now 10th A-T World!
The K's were approximately 2:51, 2:49, then 2:46 for Muir!
Her 1500's were about 4:17 and 4:09!!

Heather Kampf, best known as the Queen of the Road Mile, PR'ed in the 3000, winning the Armory race in 8:51.27.
She's now 18th A-T US!
Emily Lipari ran a good race, taking 2nd in 8:57.24!
Drew Hunter finished in 3rd place in the Men's race, but his 7:51.90 was a PR by 7.43 seconds over his HSR from 2016--when he was still an amateur!
IF he were a Collegiate--and amateur!--he'd be the Frosh Class record holder!!

Let's return to the PV!
Jenn Suhr's "injury" (reported in a previous post) apparently is all better now!
On her final day being Age 34, she Vaulted 15-2.25!
No Age record, but the Age 35 slot remains empty!!
But great to see her back in action!
(Lucy Bryan PR'ed behind Suhr at 14-2.50!)

Lisa Ryzih got the highest Women's mark, winning Karlsruhe with her 15-3.75!
Chris Nilsen got over 18-5---the best Collegiate mark of 2017!
Kyle Pater cleared 18-4.50 for the Air Force Academy!
Adrian Valles got over 18-3.25.
Morgann LeLeux cleared 14-7.25 at LSU.
In the Notre Dame meet (but on the non-oversize PV runway!!), Mary Saxer reached 14-11, with Kristen Hixson 2nd in 14-7.25!
In New Mexico, Kristen Brown's 14-10 missed the US DDD by a mere quarter-inch!!
Three others reached 14-6--Kortney Ross, Megan Clark, and Kally Long!

But the best mark came from the STEAMING Pole, Piotr Lisek!
He broke his own recently set National Record of Poland with his first 6-meter jump!
The 19-8.25 moves him from 15th A-T World, tied with 3 others, up to 6th, tied with 4 others!!

The WT got its usual abundance of solid marks!
Gwen Berry got a PR after a 4-year stall!
She nabbed the Age 27 record with her toss of 81-3.25!
(More is coming on Women's WT Age records!)
Berry remains 3rd A-T World and US!
Her 5 fair throws all were 78-10.50 or farther!!
Amber Campbell got her TENTH Age record with her measure of 74-7.25!
The Age 35 record, to be exact!
BUT--Berry's toss snagged one of Campbell's records--so Campbell now has "only" 9 Age records!!
Oh, woe!
LOL

Rudy Winkler improved to 76-6.25.
This makes him 16th A-T Collegiate, and 20th A-T US!!
Jordan Young's 75-2 makes him 23rd A-T Collegiate.
He misses my US list by 7 inches!!
Janeah Stewart won the event with her PR-tying 71-8.75.
But in 2nd--with a BIG PR--came Raven Saunders!
Her 71-1.25 is still over 2 feet from the Collegiate list!!
She's of course MUCH better known as a SP'er, but you might not know it with her UNDERwhelming  throw of 59-7!
(That said, her earlier throw of 62-8 still leads the WORLD!!)

The Multi's got some decent marks this weekend!
Kansas State Frosh Nina Schultz scored 4271 Pentathlon points, defeating Sami Spenner's 4183.
Schultz misses the Collegiate list by 56 points!
In NM, Brittany Howell scored 4291 points, missing the US list by only 8 points!!
Tim Duckworth won the Nebraska Heptathlon with his score of 6006 points!
More importantly, he became the National Record holder of Great Britain, and the first to score 6000 points!!
He becomes 15th A-T Collegiate!
And Akron Junior Jaclyn Siefring scored 4204 in the Pent!

The Hurdles outdid the Sprint in the 60 meter category!
In Karlsruhe, the "showdown" between Kendra Harrison and Sally Pearson was anticlimactic!
But Harrison's 7.76 missed her PR by just 0.01 seconds, and easily dominated Pearson, and the deep field!
All 8 women ran 8.00 or faster!
Cindy Roleder also beat Pearson, 7.90 to 7.91.
(Sally was very happy with her INdoor rust-buster!)
Christina Manning took 4th in 7.92, but ran her heat in 7.89!
Cindy Ofili was 5th in 7.96.
Eighth (and last) was Sharika Nelvis's 8-flat!

Andrew Pozzi grabbed the World leader for the Men with his 7.44 PR!
He's 22nd A-T World, but tied with 6 others!
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn ran a good 8.03.to win in Nebraska.
HSR holder Trey Cunningham ran his 2nd best mark, a 7.54.
(He also sped the flat 60 in 6.79!)
In Karlsruhe, Dina Asher-Smith ran 7.13 to edge Gayon Evans's 7.14 for the flat 60.
Over hurdles, Chad Zallow missed the Collegiate DDD by 0.01 seconds with his PR of 7.61.

Christian Coleman improved to 6.51 in the flat 60.
He moves from 13th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others, to 9th, where he's also tied with 4 others!
He misses the US DDD by that tiniest of numbers--0.01 seconds!!
Michael Norman began his Collegiate career with a 200 in 20.76!
Not bad for a rust-buster!

Then there's Kim Collins!!
Nearing Age 41 (April 5th), he AGAIN broke his own Age "40 & over" record, this time with a 6.52!
This is the FOURTH record in this Age bracket he's set this year!!
He beat Ronnie Baker's 6.54!

In other events, Ashley Spencer's 22.94 over 200 meters took the Nebraska race!
Quenesha Burks LJ'ed 21-4.75 to win at LSU.
Brad Atkins HJ'ed 7-5.
Inika McPherson HJ'ed 6-0.75, but I believe that's her 2017 opener!
The USC Men's 4X400 team ran 3:05.57 in New Mexico to become 17th A-T School!

In the USATF XC meet in Bend OR, Kenyan-Americans dominated the Men's race, with Len Korir winning in 30:11, followed by Stan Kebenai, Shadrack Kipchirchir, and Sam Chelanga!
First US-born American was Chris Derrick!
For the Women, Aliphine Tuliamuk completely overwhelmed the field, her 34:23 winning by 48 seconds over Laura Thweatt, who is coming back from a 2016 injury!
Kellyn Taylor was 3rd, while newlywed (She got married on New Year's Eve!!) Courtney Frerichs was 4th in her first-ever 10K!!
She said she hopes to run a track 10000 this spring!

The best OT marks came--not surprisingly!---on Notre Dame's monster oval!
Carter Lilly ran the 600 in 1:17.20.
Daniel Kuhn ran the 800 in 1:46.42.
And Erik Peterson ran 3000 meters in 7:51.21.

I'll close this post with the Usain-Bolt-ified "Nitro" series being held in Australia!!
I really don't know what to say about this!
(But I'll try!  LOL)

First, it's a 3-part "meet".
The first part was today, with the next two coming on 2 separate days in the next week!
It's a track meet.
You would recognize the events, even with the gimmickry the promoters added!
For example, you had a sort of "Devil-take-the-hindmost" set of Mile races, with the last runner each of the first 3 laps being sent off the track!
Then you had a Javelin Throw which was more interested in AIMING the throw rather than its measured distance!
You had a series of Mixed Relays, wherein the teams could choose the 4-some's set-up!
As in whether to go with the alternate-gender thing---a man, a woman, a man, a woman.
Or with 2 women, then 2 men--or vice versa--as the "Bolt All-Stars" used!!
Another interesting race was the "3 Minute" race!
(Back in the day---on 440 yard tracks--I ran several "Hour Runs", wherein you ran as far as you could in one hour!)
In similar fashion, a two-person team (one man, one woman) ran for 3 minutes, and added their distances to determine the winner!
GenGen LaCaze and Luke Matthews added-together distance was 2325 meters!
Have no idea who ran how many meters!

Okay, now let's look at the rest of the results!

The "Devilish" Women's Mile was won by Aussie Linden Hall in 4:36.90.
The Men's race was won in a slow 4:09 and change!

Michelle Jenneke took the 100H race in 13.76!
Have no idea if there were any stunts in that one---except maybe a jiggly dance at the start by Miss Jenneke??

Asefa Powell won the 60 in 6.64, wind of 0.2.
Jenna Prandini won the 150 in 16.99.
Jarrion Lawson won the LJ with 26-0.75!

Kara Winger took that JT with a distance of 200-8!
(Not sure if they determined her win by that number, or by her "aim"!!  LOL)

Then there was DA MAN and his Bolt All-Stars in the 4X100 Relay!!
They decided to go with the Men first, followed by the 2 Women!
So here you had Asefa Powell handing off to 2nd-legger Bolt!
And HIS "competition"--among others--was a 16 year old girl!!!
(Wonder who was ahead at the 2nd hand-off!!)
Bolt almost TACKLED Jenna Prandini, his top-end speed tough to brake as he came close to the former Duck!
But both survived, and she handed off to anchor Jeneba Tarmoh, the team timed in a runaway 40.64 win!!

I might have more to say on this "Nitro" thing later on, but for now, it appears everyone---fans included!---had LOTS of fun---before, during, and after the "meet"!
As long as it doesn't BECOME our sport in the future, I'm okay with it!!

Next week is MILLROSE!
But also the new meet in Dallas, which should be a good one!!
Plus the usual assortment of other meets---mostly Collegiate---but also including the 4th stop on the IAAF World Tour--in Poland!

See you then!

A Groundhog Day Review

It's sunny here in Bellingham WA on Groundhog day!
But what about the sport of Track and Field this INdoor season?
Is it "sunny" there too---or will we have 6 more weeks of  T&F "winter"?
Let's take a peek in this "extra" post!

BTW, I will have a few marks to report, but am saving those for the end!

Donald Trump became the US President two weeks ago today!
There's been nothing but controversy ever since--in the world of politics.
But how---if at all!!--does this affect our sport!

Aside from speculation about the US bid for the 2024 Olympics, the main source of angst seems to be about his Executive Order on Muslim Immigration!
Sir Mo Farah was concerned!
Lopez Lomong spoke out.
The Twitterverse has gone bonkers on Trump's actions!
BUT---all seems to be okay---as it affects our sport!

Iulia (Or is it Julia?) Stepanova was the key whistleblower in the Russian drug skullduggery!
And she ran the 800 in Boston's IAAF World Tour meet!
(More on the Tour below!)
Her time of 2:05.14 (As her coach predicted, she said later!) wasn't special, but her BEING THERE was!!
Yes, Darya Klishina was a Russian in Rio last summer!
But Stepanova was a Russian in the US of A just days ago!!
And a welcomed one at that!!

In the post-race interview (through an interpreter!), she said she wasn't afraid, and indeed felt safe here!
She smiled, even laughed (in interactions with her interpreter).
IMO, I'm thrilled she competed, and hope to see her (and other CLEAN Russians!) in future meets!

No, I won't go into one of my "rants" on Oversize Tracks here!
What I WILL do is CASTIGATE the SEC (and/or the NCAA authorities) for scheduling a MAJOR Collegiate Conference meet for an OT!!
Yes, the SEC's will be on Vanderbilt's 300 meter monster!!
Where NO RACE longer than 60 meters will be eligible for A-T lists or Records!!
NONE!!
If a "Collegiate Record" is run in the Women's 1000---as is quite possible---it will NOT count!!
This is more than sad--this is STUPID!!
(I believe the Big 10 Conference meet is scheduled for the SPIRE, with ITS 300 meter track!!)

Every season---INdoors and OUTdoors---brings with it its share of redshirts, injuries, major illnesses, school leavings (As Jasmine Todd left UO last year!).
That's expected!
But there's also those athletes who just choose to not compete INdoors---for whatever reason!

Among those THIS year are---
Demi Payne (Word is, she's in Texas training!  But for INdoors?  Questionable!)
Brigetta Barrett  (She's retired!)
Mary Cain  (Who knows??)
Usain Bolt & SAFP  (Bolt is in Australia for their upcoming "Nitro" series of meets---OUTdoors!  As for SAFP, she rarely competes INdoors!)
Galen Rupp (Holder of the 3000, Two Mile, and 5000 INdoor AR's, he's locked into the 10K & Marathon, so is unlikely to compete INdoors---ever again!!)
Molly Huddle (Also into the longer stuff, so NO INdoors!!)

What's "new" to my T&F Record Book---and thus also to this blog?
After the big numbers put up in the 300's this year, I finally drew up A-T Top 24 Performers lists (DDD's) for that event.
As earlier noted, the HS, US, and World lists were relatively simple to get together!
But the Collegiate lists are only halfway there (Through 11th for the Men, and 12th for the Women!).

In earlier years, I added the 1000's and the 600's, as well as Relay lists!
Also, my posts seem to be lengthening.
This is in part due to my personal situation, as my health doesn't always allow for 2 or 3 posts per week, every week!
So I have to cram EVERYthing into one LONG weekly post!!
I'll TRY to do more---just don't expect it!

That said, I will continue to cover---and even ADD!---"odd" events to my coverage---those "lost souls" unloved & even unwanted!
Such as the aforementioned 300's & 600's, but also the 50K Walk for Women!

As for those 300's & 600's, they have been this season's dominant individual events, as the Distance Medley Relay has been "busy" in the team aspect of the sport!
Here's the evidence!

I did a count of my DDD entries for 2017 on January 31st!
As of that date, here's the data.

Ninety eight (98) marks dated as 2017 (Which does NOT count those 2016-2017 season marks made in December!!) are on my INdoor DDD's!
58 are by Women, 40 by Men.
In 2015 and 2016, the final numbers reached 373 and 372!!
(I expect the usual 300+ by season's end!)

23 are from the 600!
20 are from the 300!
14 are on the WT lists!
Only 8 (so far!) are from the Pole Vault!
ZERO marks come from the Men's 60, 400, 1000, 3000, 2 Mile, 5000, HJ, LJ, TJ, and WT
The Women's lists come up empty in the 60, 400, 1500, Mile, 2 Mile, HJ, and the Pentathlon!
(I did NOT count the 2000's!)

Here's how the 4 core groups played out!
HS'ers have 28 marks, with 14 each for Men and Women!
Collegiates have 24 marks, with 10 for Men, and 14 for Women!
US Women more than double the count of US Men, 19 to 9!
World Women have 11, while World Men have 7.

How will THIS weekend's action change things??

As for the core group's in the Records department, it's been a good year so far!!
But let's peek at 2016 first!
Last year, the Men broke--
2 WR's
3 US Records
4 CR's
6 HSR's

The Women broke--
4 WR's
3 US
6 CR's
and
13 HSR's!!!

Totals were--
6 WR's
6 US
10 CR's
19 HSR's!

Knowing that the final totals should (Will??) be greatly enhanced by the Championship meets (USATF, NCAA, European Champs, and the NBIN), here's the numbers---so far!--for 2017!

Men
WR's for Emmanuel Korir and Casimir Loxsom!
AR's go to Loxsom!
CR's for Korir, Isaiah Harris, and Texas A&M's 4X400 Relayists!
HSR's for Tyrese Cooper, Jordan Geist (that 16 lb SP---which still ranks 3rd in the WORLD, according to Tilastopaia!!!), Mondo Duplantis, and Trey Cunningham!

Women
WR's go to the US team in the DMR!
AR's to that DMR team, and Quanera Hayes!
CR's to Kaela Edwards and the UO DMR team!
HSR's go to Sammy Watson and the Lake Braddock DMR squad!
(Special Mention goes to Candace Hill, who nabbed TWO of my own HS PRO records---in the 60 and 300!!)

So, EXcluding those HS PRO marks, we have, total--
WR's  (3)
AR's  (3)
CR's  (5)
HSR's (6)

Expect a LOT more!!

Sooooo, the IAAF World Tour!
Let's just say my expectations were MUCH bigger and expansive than the reality---thus far, after 2 meets---presents!
WHY?
Well, the same happens with their OUTdoor equivalents, the Diamond League meets!
(Am I wrong to connect the two---beyond that both are IAAF created and produced?)

Some comments on the T&FN MB suggest that the "poor" marks from the 1st two meets (Boston and Dusseldorf--See below for some marks from the latter!) are due to--
No INdoor WC this year, but an OUTdoor WC which many athletes are focusing on!
The usual antipathy to INdoor---period!
Post-Olympics, so athletes are just now getting into serious training for 2017!

Whatever the reasons (excuses!!), this season has been relatively slow to grow!
(Despite the numbers presented above!)
But can we blame it all on the grandiosity of the IAAF World Tour?
That "grandiosity" was partly MY fault!
I was the one who equated these 5 meets to the 14 OUTdoor DL's!
Was I wrong?

In response to the T&FN Message Board folks, I would suggest they look to the first 2 meets of the DL season---in Doha and Shanghai!
Study the marks that emerge from those meets!
Pretty good, I'd say!
In totality, the World Tour meets are weaker!
This of course could be (IS?) due to the reasons stated above!!
INdoors just isn't seen as important to many athletes as one (I...!!) would want!!
That's the reality!
But, that said, the fields for the Karlsruhe meet are pretty damn strong!!
Check back Sunday morning for the detailed results!

And now for the NEWS!
I decided to report these now---just in case the weekend meets produce such a gigantic amount of great Records & Marks that the post's length becomes untenable!

First, a correction that's NOT a correction!!
I reported in my previous post that Thiago Braz's 19-2.75 PV had defeated---among others--Renaud Lavillenie!!
Then I saw T&FN's eTN on Monday!
The results for the Rouen (France) meet did have Braz winning, but Lavillenie's name was absent!!
DID he compete there?
I rechecked the meet results, and he indeed DID compete---but ended up in 7th place!!
The eTN results went only 6 places deep---so no Lavillenie!!
(Why you NEED my blog---for DETAILED results!!!)

In other news---
Airine Palayte HJ'ed 6-6.75 for the National Record of Lithuania!
Jorge Urena's 6249 Heptathlon score is the National Record of Spain!
Katie Jones leads the HS Pole Vaulter's with her 13-6.50 mark!
This makes her 15th A-T HS---no ties!
LaPorscha Wells threw the WT 73-11.
She's 14th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!

As for Dusseldorf---
Probably the best marks---Well, the only Record breakers!--came from Ageless Kim Collins!
This phenom TWICE broke his own Age 40 record in the 60!
He'd run 6.64 earlier this season to "set" the record!
In Dusseldorf, he broke it in his heat with a 6.58!
Then broke it again in the final with a 6.56!

Sandi Morris took the PV with a jump of 15-5.75.
She missed thrice at 15-9.75!
Elijah Manangoi won the 1500 in 3:37.62, a World leader!
Also getting World leaders were--
Adam Kszczot took the 800 in 1:46.17.
Dimitri Bascou, with a 60H in 7.51.
Joanna Jozwik with her 2:00.91 in the 800.

The Women's 60 was a good race, but no World leading mark!
Olesya Povh won in 7.16, but close behind were Barbara Pierre (7.17), Asha Philip (7.18), and Gina Luckenkemper (7.19).

See you soon!
