This Cup is Half (You Choose--Part 1)

Oscar Husillos of Spain WON the Men's 400 in 44.92.
This gives him the Age 24 Record, the National Record of Spain, the World Championship Meet Record, and makes him 6th All-Time World!

Nah!

You see, he became one of (Not sure--Let's just say "innumerable"!) DQ's throughout the course of 4 days of competition in the city of Birmingham, England!
(Even those COUNTING lost count!!)

So Senor Husillos perhaps became the poor symbol, the "poster child" of these Championships--especially because he ran the 400!
As noted in my editorial (DQ this WC's!--See previous post!), the Men's 400 saw an inordinate number of the total of DQ's--including ALL FIVE finishers in Heat 3!!

That was the nadir, the bottom, the ugliest!
But was the entire meet so inglorious?
Let's investigate.

The Heptathlon and Pentathlon had two great competitions, with some marks that added to the excitement!

Katarina Johnson-Thompson was supposed to have it easy, as her main foes of recent years had retired, or weren't present!
No one was within 200 points of her 2015 PR of 5000!
But her 8.36 in the 60H wasn't her best, and you had the Americans going much faster, and they weren't easy pickings!
But her Shot Put was better than normal, and she got off a 6.50 LJ---not great, but enough!
Her 4750 score was enough to hold off the 4700 of Ivona Dadic, and the 4637 of Yorgelis Rodriguez.
In fact, Rodriguez broke the National Record of Spain!!

The Americans weren't as productive as they'd been in the USATF meet!
Erica Bougard scored 4571 in 5th, while Kendell Williams could get to just 4414 in 9th!!

Kevin Mayer of France was another supposed to have an easy go.
He didn't count on Canadian Damian Warner having his best days!
It was tight all the way, despite Mayer eclipsing his event scores from his 6479 PR in the 60, LJ, and SP!
It was in the Pole Vault where things went sour!
Having soared over 5.60 earlier this season (in an open event), he was stopped after clearing a mere 5 meters--and losing 190 points in the process!!

So it came down to the 1000!
Needing to beat Mayer by 3 seconds, he came up 0.48 short, scoring 6343 to Mayer's 6348!!
For Warner, he got the National Record of Canada, and becomes 15th A-T World!
In 3rd came Maicel Uibo (or, as some jokingly call him, Mr Shaunae Miller!), his 6265 points making him 23rd A-T World!
Kaz Kazmirek's 6238 misses my World DDD by 21 points!!

Now let's peek into the Uglies!
Those 3000's!

I'm guessing that with no Walks on the Program, the "runners" decided to pay homage to those fine athletes by WALKING the opening laps!!
Genzebe Dibaba--not exactly known for sloughing it--hit the 1500 mark in about 4:42--or 5 minute Mile pace!!
Okay, she did pick it up a bit--to roughly 4:03 for her 2nd Metric Mile--and 2:37.43 over her last 1000, with her final go-round being 29.44!!
Her 8:45.05 was enough to turn back Sifan Hassan and Laura Muir, who were each dogged in pursuit, finishing in the 8:45's also!
Several seconds back came Helen Obiri, Shelby Houlihan, and Konstanze Klosterhalfen!!

Yomif Kejelcha was seen taking selfies and waving to the crowd during his Sunday Stroll over 15 laps!
His 8:14.41 winner might be bettered enroute to the Two Mile at next week's NBIN meet for High Schoolers!!
The shocking thing was that ALL the runners didn't finish within ONE second of him!
His K splits were 3:08 (!!!), 2:43, then 2:23!!
Oh, almost forgot--Shadrack Kipchirchir was one of the ignominious DQ's here!!
And in the Heats, FOUR Men were DQ'ed, including Paul Chelimo, who seems to make a habit of it!!

Back to the Top of the Poppermost, as they say in the land of the Beatles!

As most expected (Hoped for!!), the Pole Vaults came off (almost!) as scripted!
Yarisley Silva, Nina Kennedy, and Olga Mullina were stopped after having cleared 15-1.
(Lisa Ryzih was the only No-Height!!)

Katie Nageotte got over some bars, but was clearly (by PoleVaultPower's words!) off from her towering efforts at USATF!
She and Alysha Newman ended after topping 15-5!
(Nageotte was--let's say--philosophically satisfied with her 5th place finish!!)
Newman took away a solid consolation prize--She broke her own National Record of Canada!!

Maybe this event's biggest shock came from the recently-hurting Kiwi, Eliza McCartney!
Not really expected to do much here--as she's preparing for next month's Commonwealth Games--McCartney rose to 15-7, taking 4th place!!
This broke her own National Record of New Zealand!
And it makes her 18th A-T World, tied with 2 others!
(What will she do when fully healthy??)

This left it to the Big Three--Ekaterina Stefanidi, Sandi Morris, and Anzhelika Sidorova!
And wouldn't you know it--with the way this whole meet was played out--that one of the favorites would wind up with the Bronze--Kat's 15-9 ending her meet!
Down to the Russian and the American!

Clearing 14-9 and 15-1 on 1st tries, Morris was ahead of Sidorova, who began at 15-1.
But Sidorova went on to clear 15-5, 15-9, and 15-11, all on first attempts!
Morris fell further behind, needing 2 at 15-5, then 3 at 15-9!!
So, seeing her rival get over 15-11, Morris passed after one X there!
At 16-0.75, Morris made it on her 2nd, while Sidorova needed all three!
BUT--her make moved her from 7th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 5th, tied with 2 others!
And it made her the 7th Woman to top 16 feet INdoors!!

Then the bar rose to 16-2.75!!
The Russian missed all her attempts, while Morris made it over on her 3rd!
(The bar shook, but stayed on--allowing Morris to initiate her screams!!)
For Sandi, it's the WC Meet Record, and gave her a tie of the Age 25 Record!!
She remains 2nd A-T US, and 3rd A-T World!
Her 3 tries at a WR 16-6.50 were misses!

The Men's PV wasn't as exciting, but it basically gave up the same ending scenario--the 3 best of 2018 fighting it out for Top Position!
After the "children" (Kurtis Marschall, Emmanouil Karalis, and Mondo Duplantis) left the scene (Mondo after 5.70, Karalis & Marschall after 5.80), it was Piotr Lisek vs Sam Kendricks vs Renaud Lavillenie!!
Kendricks and Lisek topped 19-2.50, with Sam getting 2nd!
For Renaud, it was a good meet, but his 19-4.25 wasn't earth shattering!
His 3 attempts at 6.00 fell short!

The Long Jumps were quite healthy specimens!
The Men's was especially exciting, with a trio ending within 2 inches of each other!!
And these were LONG jumps--sic!

The shock winner (And yes, this was a real shocker!!) was Juan Ecchevaria, whose 27-9.25 leap makes him 7th A-T World!!
His 5th round effort missed Carl Lewis's Age 19 record by one inch!!

In 2nd came the fave--Luvo Manyonga!
But when he began with 2 fouls--however humongous they were said to be!--things got hairy!
His 3rd got him on the board--so to speak!--making his 4th rounder his go-to effort!
But his 27-8.25 fell short!
However he broke his own National Record of South Africa, and he moves from 16th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 9th, tied with 1 other!

Marquis Dendy's 27-7.50 took the Bronze.
He moves from 13th A-T World, tied with 3 others, to 13th, but with no ties!!

Cut OFF the World DDD was none other than Bob Beamon, his 27-7.75 dating from--you guessed it!--1968!!

Quanesha Burks took the 1st round lead in the Women's event, her 22-4.25 a small PR!
She moves from 11th A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 10th, also tied with 1 other!!
Sosthene Moguenara-Taroum leapt 22-5.75 in round 2.
But it took 4th round efforts to decide the winner!
Brittney Reese got out to 22-7.25 in a 6-round series that saw her NOT fouling--even once!!
But it wasn't enough!
Ivana Spanovic had been rounding into shape (See previous posts!), and it came to fruition here--as her 22-10 was enough for the Gold!

Now we'll return to the Witch's Well to see what happened in the 800's!
The Women's race was "marred" by the presence of one of the "No Names"--this one with the initials of FN!
So Ajee Wilson--despite her 1:58.99 blazer--was "officially" relegated to 2nd!
But I--your friendly Blogger--chooses to BAR the 3 No Names from recognition!!
Thus--for ME!--Wilson WON this event!!
Coming 2nd was Home Girl Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, timed in 1:59.81.
One of the faves ran a few seconds off her potential--Raevyn Rogers's 2:01.44 leaving her in 5th!!

The Men's 800 had a mixture of surprises--good and bad!
The heats were fast!
Alvaro De Arriba ran the fastest--1:45.44.
He missed my World list by 0.11 seconds!!
Next came the 1:45.46 of Elliott Giles!
Followed by the American--Drew Windle!
His 1:45.52 gave him a sliver of a PR--by 0.01.
He remains 3rd A-T US!!

The final, however, was a different story!!
Windle finished 2nd to Adam Kszczot, giving him a somewhat shocking Silver!
Kszczot's winning time was a drab 1:47.47 in a strongly negative split race--400's of 55.77 and 51.70!!
But then Windle was DQ'ed!!
(How do I DQ thee?  Let me count the ways!  LOL)

Anyway, long SAD story short, Windle fought for reinstatement--and won!!

I'm going to make this a two-parter, due to length and the amount of material left to report!
But before we end this first part, let's see what the 1500's gave us--on the same weekend when Sir Roger Bannister died!!
(It's only fitting, yes??!!)

Genzebe did her thing in the Heats--run faster than needed!
Her 4:06.25 led the 4:06.51 of Laura Muir, and the 4:07.51 of Aisha Praught-Leer!
Colleen Quigley also made it through, her 4:09.31 making her 20th A-T US!!

GONE from my US DDD was my first "crush"--Francie Larrieu!!
Her 4:09.8 from 1975 is OFF my list!!

In another Heat, Sifan Hassan's 4:05.46 beat Winny Chebet's 4:05.81.
Next came Rababe Arafi's 4:06.12, followed closely by Shelby Houlihan's 4:06.21!
This makes her 8th A-T US!
But it DROPS Quigley down to 21st!!

It also DROPS another icon of sorts from my US list!!
GONE is Abbey D'Agostino's 4:09.77, dating from 2014!

The final was run the way MANY distance races are run in Championship meets---as a WALK!!
The initial 400 went in 76.48!!
Yes, it picked up to a 64 over the next two laps, but any chance of a fast time was gone!!
In the end, Genzebe Dibaba's final 1100 of 2:48.79 took care of business!
(That's about a 1000 in 2:32-ish!!)
Her 4:05.27 beat the Scot--Laura Muir--by less than a second!
Sifan Hassan took 3rd in 4:07.26.
Far back in 4th came Shelby Houlihan's 4:11.93.

The Men??
They really need to grow a pair--or 3 or 4!!
(I'm almost embarrassed to tell you this!!)
The Final saw the first 400 timed in--75.84--barely "faster" than the Women!
They "picked it up" to a 68 for the next 2 laps!
Their finishing 700 was in about 1:50 pace for 800, but their end time was---Jeez!!!---3:58.19 (for Samuel Tefera).

3:58.19!!
And this was NOT a Mile!!
Roger Bannister--64 years ago--ran 3:59.4 in History's first sub-4 Mile!!
These "runners" would have been beaten by Bannister---by about 16 or 17 seconds!!--over the full distance!!

Embarrassing??
How about STUPENDOUSLY & MONSTROUSLY embarrassing!!

And on THAT note of SHAME, I'll bring this first part to a close!
With a promise of MUCH MORE yet to come!

And not only from Birmingham!
I have tons of great (and NOT so great!) stuff left to report!!

See you VERY soon!!
