2018 INdoors Review

This final INdoors report is more a review of the numbers my T&F Record Book uses.
While it may have some interest for readers of this blog, for the average fan, it probably won't!
However, I like to see just how good (or not!) a season was, based on these numbers!

I'll begin with a chronological listing of all the "major" Records broken or tied during the 2017-2018 INdoor season!
If a mark broke more than 1 Record (such as the AR & CR!), I'll put both on the same line!

SOME athletes showed their season was going to be a good one by performing well in December!!
It's always interesting to follow the progress of those who later break Records---by seeing how their season began!
Here's a few!

Karissa Schweizer ran 15:17.31 in early December!
Gabrielle Thomas "rust-busted" with early times of 7.46 and 37.47!
Eleanor Purrier ran a solid 3000 of 8:55.68 in December!
Sydney McLaughlin started her astounding Freshman year with that 300 of 36.12!!
Annette Echikunwoke showed early peak form with a December WT of 75-11.50!
And Brian Herron began his year with times of 20.95 and 46.43!!

In my AOY post, I gave you some numbers that showed which Event had the most marks dated 2018 on my Top 24 A-T Performers lists!
Here's a more detailed listing!
I give you all events that have 3 or more 2018 marks on the list!
I also tell you which Events had ZERO marks from this past season!!

MEN--World
The 400 led with 7 marks!
The 300 & 4X400 Relay had 4 each!
With 3 apiece are the 60, 200, 800, LJ, SP, and WT!
Striking out---with NO marks dated 2018!!--are the 1000, 2000, 3000, 2 Mile, 5000, and the TJ!!

Looks like the Distances were all tactical & SLOW!!

MEN--US
The 400 & 800 lead with 5 each!
With 3 each are the 60H and PV.
With NO marks are the 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2 Mile, 5000, and the LJ!

MEN--Collegiate
The 4 X 400 Relay leads with 7!!
The 400 has 6.
The WT and Heptathlon have 4 apiece.
With 3 each are the 60 & 200.
With NONE are the 1000, 5000, and the TJ!

MEN--HS
The PV and SP have 4 each!
With 3 apiece are the 60, 200, 300, 400, 800, Mile, and 60H!
With ZERO are the 600, 3000, 2 Mile, LJ, and TJ!

Guess the distances suffered across the board on the Men's side!
The Horizontal Jumps didn't do so well either!!

WOMEN--World
The WT leads with 7!
The PV has 5.
The 4 X 400 Relay has 4.
With 3 each are the 60, 400, and the 60H.
Striking out are the 600, 800, 1000, Mile, 2 Mile, LJ, TJ, SP, and Pentathlon!!

WOMEN--US
The 3000 has 9---and is the most for ANY category, Men or Women!!
With 7 are the 2000 and PV!
NOTE: My US 2000 list has several "enroute" marks on it, but these were officially timed, so count as legit 2K times!!
The 400 and WT have 6.
With 4 is the 200!
With 3 each are the 60, 300, 800, 1500, Mile, and 60H!
With NONE are the 1000 and 2 Mile!!

WOMEN--Collegiate
Leading the way--with 5 apiece--are the 400, 1500, 60H, TJ, PV, and the DMR!
The 60, 200, 800, and WT have 4 each!
The Mile, 3000, and the 4 X 400 Relay have 3 each.
Striking out is the 5000!!
NOTE: Schweizer's and Ednah Kurgat's fast 5000 times were run in December, so have "2017" as the year, even though they were part of the 2018 season!!

WOMEN--HS
The 400, 60H, and the TJ lead with 5 each.
With 4 are the 1500 and Mile!
The 1000, 2 Mile (NOT 3200!!), PV, and Pentathlon have 3 each!
With NONE is the 300!!

Here are the Totals!!

The World Men led the Women, 42 to 35!
But the US Women crushed the Men, 68 to 33!!
The Collegiate Women also dominated, 65 to 46!
The HS'ers were also Woman-dominated, 53 to 39!

The Grand Totals were 221 for the Women to 160 for the Men!
The Total--both genders--was 381.

Yes, it was down quite a bit from last-year's 465!!
BUT---the 300 and 600 had a whopping 103 marks on my lists dated 2017!!
The 300 & 600 "action" was DOWN a LOT this year!!
So, overall, this was a pretty solid year!!

OUT of action were Hannah Cunliffe and Raven Saunders!
Also must mention Amber Campbell!!
(There were others, but these were the most unexpected!!)

Rising UP were--among others--Gabrielle Thomas, Katie Nageotte, and Ashley Henderson!

Best Collegiate Frosh were Lynna Irby, Syd McLaughlin, and Tara Davis!

For the Men, we missed Christian Taylor, Ryan Crouser & Joe Kovacs!

Rising UP were Elijah Hall, Michael Norman, and Ed Cheserek!

Best Collegiate Frosh were Jordan Geist and Vernon Turner!

We come to Age Records!
My Age Records go from 17 to 40, but the "bookends" are listed as "0-17" and "40 & over".
This means that an athlete Age 15 or 16 can set a Record in the 0-17 category, and an athlete of ANY age over 40 can set a record in the 40 & over category!
By event, but only those where Age Records were broken in 2018!

MEN
60 (Age 21, 24--a tie, 28 & 32)
200 (23)
300 (17)
400 (20 & 25)

800 (22)
1500 (18)

300 (18--in December!--and 23)
400 (18, 19 & 23)
1500 (26)
5000 (Tuohy's mark is an Age 15 Record, but it's also the fastest I have for Women Age 17 or younger!!)
60H (18, 20 & 27)
PV (25--a tie, 35 & 36)
Yes, Jenn Suhr set TWO Age Records, as her birthday is February 5th--mid-season!!
WT (24 & 28)

There werr 7 WR's--5 for the Men, and 2 for the Women, including a tie!
The US saw 5 AR's for the Men, with 7 for the Women, including a tie!
The Collegiate set saw 5 Men's CR's broken, with 5 also for the Women, including a tie!
The HS'ers got 4 HSR's on the Men's side, while the Women got 7!

Finally, a few "opinions"---

Best Meet was the NCAA---no contest!!
The Worst meet was the World Championships!!

Best AND Worst Fake News was Ayesha Champagnie's so called 21-6.25 LJ!!

And that is a WRAP on the 2017-2018 INdoor season!!
Next up will be my Previews for the OUTdoor season---
a Schedule
Predictions for Records in the 4 core groups, and for Age Records
a listing of the 24th place mark on my DDD's---so as to give athletes an idea of what it takes to make those lists!!

OUTdoors, here we come!!!

See you soon!!

    1. Not true. Noah Lyles was 17 when he ran 20.83 in 2015. That's the age 17 INdoor record!

    3. No, not the way I do Age Records, using actual full birthdates! I don't do "Junior", "Youth", or "Masters" categories. My Age Records are Individual Year Age Records, such as Age 22, 23, 31, 35, etc, based on Actual full birthdates. So MY way does give Lyles the Age 17 Record. In fact, it is considered the World Age 17 Record for OUTdoors---unless you use the "Junior" record rules, which uses "year only"!!
