2018 NBIN Preview (MEN & WOMEN)

Hello again!
Thank you for not screaming at me for the length of my NCAA Preview!
Just didn't want to have two short posts---when one long one made more sense---to me!
That said, this New Balance INdoor Nationals Preview should be a bit shorter!
Reason being I just don't see every event as being one to feature---or even mention!!
I might be wrong--and hope I am!!--but this year's meet might not match the high quality previous NBIN's have!
Such phenomenal athletes as Trey Knight and Katelyn Tuohy notwithstanding!!

Following are my guidelines for following this Preview---

The events will be presented in the order of the scheduled Finals--with the longer races having Sections, I use the fastest Section as my focus!
The 1st day have mostly Emerging Elite races!
The 2nd day are most of the Prelims--or Heats!
Day 3 is loaded with Finals!
Field events are offered at the bottom of each day--even though they're dispersed throughout each day on the schedule!
I group the Men's and Women's events together--as that's how it's set up on the schedule---for the Track events!
I'll give you the Meet Record--and say whether it's also the HSR!
And I'll present the leading contenders---where there are any!!

Friday

Emerging Elite 400--Women
Athing Mu is entered in one of the EE 400 Sections!
Why isn't she in the "elite" event??

5000  (MR's--14:06.78 & 15:55.75)
There are no known Male contenders for the Record in this event---so just enjoy the race!
The Woman too don't have any real challengers to Brie Oakley's MR!
(And with Katelyn Tuohy's 15:37.12 HSR, we'll be seeing the END to this meet's streak of SEVEN consecutive years of this event having the HSR broken!!)
That said, should be a good time seeing what the Ping sisters--Grace and Lauren--can do against their older brethren--which includes Jacqueline Gaughan, who recently ran a 2 Mile in 10:09!
Watch for Brooke Rauber and Kaitlynn Wolfe--the latter of whom ended a far back 2nd to Tuohy in that HSR race!!

DMR  (HSR & MR--9:56.18  MR--11:34.85)
Four Men's teams have solid anchors--Arlington TC of MA has Ryan Oosting--Hunterdon of NJ has Chris Romero--Jungle TC of VA has Sam Affolder--and Brentwood TC of TN has Brodey Hasty!
The Women also have some studs on anchor--Friends of PA has Gabby Wilkinson--Koalas of NY has Lily Flynn & her sister Sarah--Benjamin Cardoza of NY has Paris Peoples--Kinetic TC of NY has Kelsey Chmiel--while North Rockland of NY has Ms Tuohy!!
(As in all of the Relays, I don't know what the others on the teams can do, so no predictions of Records falling--despite the phenoms on anchor!!)

HJ--Women  (MR--6-0.50)
Jenna Rogers is here!
So give this Record 75-25 odds!

Saturday

Pentathlon's  (HSR's & MR's--4307 & 4068)
Kyle Garland seems ready to attack this HSR & MR!!
Give him 70-30 odds!
The Women have HJ stud Anna Hall, as well as Sterling Lester!
But I just don't see either one getting Kendell Williams's HSR & MR!
25-75!

Mile Walk  (HSR & MR--6:06.13  MR--6:53.44)
No Guys of any note!
But the Women have the HSR holder over a few distances--Taylor Ewart!!
The MR should be easy, since her REAL target is her own HSR of 6:45 & change!!
Behold this future Olympian!!

Shuttle Hurdle Relay  (HSR's & MR's  28.62 & 30.63)
No names here!

4 X Mile Relay  (HSR's & MR's  17:07.17 & 19:59.24)
Jungle TC has Sam Affolder!
Koalas TC has the Flynn sisters--Lily & Sarah!

SMR  (HSR's & MR's  3:24.02 & 3:52.68)
He's nowhere near the level of sister Katelyn, but Patrick Tuohy is on North Rockland's team!
(Now, if they could only add his sister....!!!  LOL)
Speaking of whom, she's on HER North Rockland squad!!
That said, I doubt she has the 800 wheels to do any real damage here!!

4 X 800 Relay  (HSR & MR  7:36.99  MR  8:54.11)
Sam Affolder is going to be one BUSY dude!!
He's here also--for his Jungle TC!!
Ditto for the Flynn's--they're also here for their Koalas TC!!

Pole Vault--Men  (MR  19-1)
Sorry, but no Mondo or Sondre!!
We DO have KC Lightfoot and Zach Bradford---who may or may not reach 18 feet!!
40-60 for both!

Long Jump--Men  (MR  26-0.25)
Donavan Louis and Frank Royal are the best here---if marks in the low 24's can be termed "best"!!
ZERO odds!

Shot Put--Women  (MR  56-7.50)
No one near this Record!
But Shelby Bigsby and Payden Montana should be the main contenders for the Win!

Long Jump--Women  (MR  21-3.25)
Lanae Tava-Thomas has a GREAT chance to get this MR--and maybe even the HSR!!
Give her 75-25 odds!
Jasmine Moore is more a TJ'er, but watch for her!
Add Sydnee Larkin for added interest!

Shot Put--Men  (MR--75-4.75)
This ain't 2017!!
No way, no how, no Sir!!
In other words, there's no one near 70 feet, let alone 75!!
But Trey Knight might make things interesting!
Also watch for Josh Sobota and Patrick Piperi, brother of Tripp!!

High Jump--Men  (HSR & MR  7-5.25)
Nate Patterson and Mayson Connor are here as 7+ foot Club reps, but neither are going to rise 3-plus inches!!

Sunday

Junior HS Mile
This is the 1st time this event has been run, so no Record---yet!
But Lauren Ping is entered in the Women's race!!
4:50??

Freshman Mile
No names or Records to offer---just letting you know when it takes place!!

4 X 200 Relay  (MR's  1:26.21 & 1:35.86)
For the Men, the Bull TC of MD has Eric Allen!
For the Women, Kori Monster's namesake (aka Kori Carter the OTHER!!) reps Team War of VA!

2 Mile  (MR's  8:40.70 & 9:55.92)
NOTE--The 3000 MR's are 8:09.57 and 9:17.4.  This meet does provide enroute times!  Also, the Women's MR's were set in 1991, in a previous edition of the NBIN--under another name!  But I accept any Records from that earlier version as the NBIN Meet Records, where applicable!!

Brodey Hasty might attack the HSR of Ed Cheserek--his 8:39.15!
And I'll give him 80-20 odds, since Hasty likes to chase fast times!!
Possibly aiding & abetting are Ryan Oosting and Dalton Hengst!
But it's the Women's race which COULD be the outstanding event of the entire meet!!
We have Kelsey Chmiel vs Katelyn Tuohy!!
Will Tuohy try for Mary Cain's HSR of 9:38.68!
Don't forget, she SOLO'ed to a 3000 of 9:05.26 in January---just 0.75 off Cain's enroute time to that 2 Mile!!
With Chmiel possibly on her shoulder through at least the first 2000, this could turn into a Race Against the CLOCK!!
But keep in mind--despite her 3K time---that Tuohy's Mile PR is just 4:43---not exactly a confidence builder!!
Give her 60-40 odds anyway!!
(One way or another, Melody Fairchild's MR's are OUTTA here!!!)
BTW, Grace Ping, Brooke Rauber, and Jackie Gaughan are also here!!
Not to mention WALKER Taylor Ewart--who likes to do a little running now and then!!

60H   (HSR's & MR's  7.40 & 8.02)
Eric Edwards is the Man here, but watch for Ayden Owens!
No Record there!
But the Women have 8.07 Gal Emily Sloan, 8.12'er Grace Stark, as well as OUTdoor 100H HSR holder Tia Jones--who hasn't yet found the path to super fast 60H times!!
Add Kori Carter here too!

60  (HSR & MR  6.57  MR  7.26)
Anthony Schwartz just ran a slightly windy OUTdoor 100 in 10.13!
He seems to believe he can get Casey Combest's iconic HSR!
Maybe.
(20-80 odds!)
For company, he MIGHT have Tyrese Cooper---IF he competes here!
He suffered a groin injury at the meet where Schwartz ran that 100--and is on a "Wait & see" basis for the NBIN!!
Mario Heslop is here too.
While she's just a 9th Grader, Tamari Davis might be THE Name here!!
But she faces Lanae Tava-Thomas, Abby Steiner, and Thelma Davies!!
I'll give the MR 60-40 odds!!

400  (MR  46.55  HSR & MR  51.61)
Brian Herron is entered here!
So is Ty Cooper, but See above!!
Nicholas Ramey joins the party, but Herron is capable of getting this MR---even if Cooper isn't there to push him!!
Arria Minor is fast, but no Sydney McLaughlin, so the Women's MR is safe!!
Vanessa Watson and Paris Peoples ran speedy 600's recently (See earlier post!), but how those translate to the 400 is questionable!!
Sterling Lester and Dejour Miles are others to watch!

1 Mile  (MR's 4:03.84 & 4:36.61  1500 MR's are 3:46.41 and 4:17.68)
Brodey Hasty won't be running the Mile!
And Dalton Hengst needs to remove several seconds off his time to cut down Grant Fisher's MR!!
20-80 odds!
Scott Thompson, Cole Johnson, Dustin Horter, and Chris Romero might offer some shoulder bumps along the trail!
Marlee Starliper might be a VERY slight favorite here, but NOT for the MR!!
Katherine Lee, Katelynn Hart, and the ubiquitous Lily Flynn will tag along for company!

800  (MR's  1:49.46 and 2:03.59)
They're definitely FAR removed from Josh Hoey's recent HSR of 1:47.67--having no times faster than 1:52---so far!!
But look for the Men's winner to come from among Alfred Chewonza, Brenden Stewart or Nick Cross.
Lily Flynn is here also???  Maybe just MINUTES after finishing a fast Mile??
Watch for a DNS in one of these events for her!!
If she's a DNS, watch for Gabby Wilkinson, Athing Mu, and Esther Sceland to challenge for the W.
No Records!

200  HSR & MR  20.63  MR  23.23)
Once again, watch for a DNS from Tyrese Cooper!
But if he's here--and not hurting--give this one to him!
Despite the presence of Austin Kratz, Marcellus Moore, Mario Heslop, and Eric Allen!
For the Women, watch again for that Frosh Phenom Tamari Davis!!
Again despite the presence of Lanae Tava-Thomas, Abby Steiner, Tia Jones, and yes, that Kori Carter person!!
The Women's MR gets 70-30 odds!!

4 X 400 Relay  (MR's  3:13.34 and 3:39.70)
No teams with any "names"!!

Weight Throw--Women  (HSR & MR  68-2.50)
Gianna Rao leads the way here, but she's still 5 feet removed from the Records!!
Javon Joyner and Chandler Hayden are further down the scale, but in the 60's!

Triple Jump--Men  (HSR & MR  52-7.50)
No Records here either!
In fact, no one has reached even 50 feet this season!!

Weight Throw--Men  (MR  92-7.50)
Trey Knight is the next HSR holder in this event---but not this year!!
Still, his 83-6.25 as a Soph is MONSTROUS!!!
If he gets to 85 or 86 here--no surprise!!
Jacob Furland will be FAR back!!

Triple Jump--Women  (MR  44-2)
No Keturah Orji's here, but two solid contenders for the Gold!!
Jasmine Moore is the favorite, but watch for Lexi Ellis!
Add Alonie Sutton for back-up!

Pole Vault--Women  (MR  14-2.75)
Reagann LeLeux might be the next INdoor 14 footer--and it could happen at this meet!!
Give her 55-45 odds for that barrier topper!
But move the odds down to 10-90 for the MR!!
Mia Manson and Alana Carroll are both at 13-6, and could add an inch or three!!

And that is all she (or I) wrote!!
LOL

The meet begins SOON--and it's FREE to watch!!
Go to either Runner Space or USATF-TV!!

Be back with all the Results on Sunday!

See you soon!
