To say the least!!
I mean, who woulda thunk Athing Mu could lose--to a freaking Freshman, no less??
And who woulda believed that 2:09 girl Katelyn Tuohy would go out in 63.7 on her DMR leg??
And what about the LARGE presence of Morgan SMALLS??
I mean, JEEZ, these High Schoolers just don't mess around!
In a meet I opine was FAR better and definitely filled with more thrills than the NCAA's, we saw 7 Meet Records fall, with one of them a tie!!
The American Record holding (in the 600) Athing Mu was considered a shoo-in for the 800 title, and a serious threat to Ajee Wilson's American Record!
She was going to run this alone, with no Professional elites to charge her engine, but who needs the Pro's when you have such a massive talent ready to get it on??!!
Hitting the first 200 in 28 high, she gave hints that this was NOT going to be her day--snoring through the 400 in the 61's!
Okay, so any chance at a HSR, or an AR were gone, but she'd still win, right??
Right???
Tell that to FRESHMAN Roisin Willis, who used a startling kick over the final straight to pass Mu at the line,!!
Getting the Frosh Class Record with her 2:05.70, she is now 9th A-T HS!!
Mu's 2:05.86 was disappointing to her, but her post-race statement showed what a class act she is!!
It will be interesting to see them re-matched--OUTdoors!!
Bailey Googins also came close to beating Mu, as her 2:06.10 makes her 13th A-T HS!
Michaela Rose ran 2:06.90 in 4th, making her 21st A-T HS!
Cut FROM my HS list was one Mary Cain, her 2:07.26 from 2012 now GONE!!
The other expectant Record breaker--Katelyn Tuohy--had a interesting lead-up to her Two Mile race on Sunday!
A couple of days earlier, she took the anchor leg of North Rockland's DMR squad to new heights.
But NOT with her final split time of 4:41.9!
No, it was her opening 400 of 63.7 that made me bug-eyed!
And when she hit the 800 point in 2:13, I thought we'd see a sub-4:30 leg!
But she erred in going so fast so early, and faded to 74's the rest of the way!
Admitting after her Deuce that she had "lactic acid" from her DMR leg, Record expectations waned a bit!
Nonetheless, running much more even splits, she hit the first Mile in 4:51.
While she could have negative split the race to beat Mary Cain's 9:38.68, Tuohy isn't known for negative split races!
But she powered on--lactic acid notwithstanding, and finished in 9:51.05--just 4 or 5 seconds faster than she split in her 15:37.12 5000 in 2018!
Tuohy moves from 6th A-T HS to 2nd, and gets the NBIN Meet Record!
Let me clarify something about that MR!
The announcer said the MR was 9:56.06!
My Record Book carries the Record as Melody Fairchild's 9:55.92 from 1991!
The reason being that in 1991, the meet had a different name!
But it was the same meet as today, just a different sponsor and name!
Just as Footlocker XC was known as the Kinney XC many years ago!!
But Tuohy didn't care about which Record she broke!
Enroute, she split 9:10.78 at 3000, nabbing Fairchild's other MR of 9:17.4!
Second was Katelynn Hart, who dipped into the 9's with her 9:58.42!
This makes her 6th A-T HS!
Her 9:17.83 at 3K makes her 5th A-T HS!
In 3rd came Sydney Thorvildson's 10:01.52, making her 8th A-T HS!
Her 9:21.76 split makes her 12th A-T HS!
Morgan Smalls was almost as ubiquitous as Grant Holloway was at the NCAA's!
But it was her HJ that made heads turn!
While the Women's HJ has seen an excellent resurgence this year--with 4 over 6 feet, no one saw Smalls's 6-3.25 coming!!
She initially PR'ed at 6-0.75, then at 6:2.25, and finally at 6-3.25!
This makes her 2nd only to the legendary Vashti Cunningham, and gives great promise to the future of US Women's HJ'ing!
She gets the NBIN Meet Record, and the Junior Class Record!
She moves from 4th A-T HS, tied with 2 others, to 2nd!
And misses the US list by a mere quarter inch!!
A pair of Relay Records fell!
Both by the same team--the Jungle TC!
They kicked things off by cutting 1.77 seconds off the DMR mark, using a 4:06 anchor by Sam Affolder to run 9:54.41!
Using yet another 4:06 in the 4 X Mile (NOT 4 X 1600!!), they cut it VERY close, but cut it indeed, their 17:01.81 nailing their own Record by one hundredth of a second!!
Both marks of course set new NBIN Meet Records as well!!
The Women's Mile saw a squeaker--to say the least!
Separated by a hair or two, Taryn Parks produced a slight upset by nipping favored Marlee Starliper at the line, both timed in 4:39.05!
Parks is now 6th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
That "other" is Stsrliper, who moves from 12th A-T HS to 6th, but tied with Parks!
Victoria Starcher was a quick 3rd, her 4:40.63 making her 12th A-T HS!
Even 4th placer Zofia Dudek got onto my list, her 4:44.88 making her the caboose on my list!
Their 1500 splits also produced some list changers!
Starliper led at the 1500, her 4:20.55 moving her from 8th to 6th on my HS DDD!
Parks was at 4:21.34 at the 1500, making her 7th A-T HS!
Starcher's 4:21.91 makes her 8th A-T HS!
And Dudek's 4:25.47 makes her 22nd A-T HS!!
Jasmine Moore had an outstanding meet, winning both of the Horizontals!
Her LJ win took just 20-9.25, but it moves her from 13th A-T HS to 10th!
Taking 2nd was Synthia Savage, her 20-5 making her 19th A-T HS, tied with 4 others!
A Ms Seaman--first name unknown at this time, also hit 20-5, thus making her also 19th A-T HS, tied with 4 others!
But it was in her signature event--the TJ--that she really shone!
Her 44-2 tied the Meet Record, and moved her from 6th A-T HS to 2nd, where she's tied with---(Trumpets, please!!) Keturah Orji!
Classy company!!
And it was Morgan Smalls in 2nd, her 41-9.50 missing the HS list by one quarter inch!
She ALSO LJ'ed 19-11.50!
Is a Pentathlon in her future--and a Heptathlon OUTdoors??
While not a HSR, Anna Hall's winning Pentathlon mark of 4209 did make her the NBIN Meet Record holder!
And while she won by 469 (!!!) points, this event produced quite a deep set of quality marks!
Chloe Rice's 3740 makes her 7th A-T HS!
Jade Johnson scored 3735 points to make her 9th A-T HS!
Alaina Brady's 3682 makes her 15th A-T HS!
And Brianna Smith's 3667 makes her 19th A-T HS!!
The shorter races produced a few good times, and a surprise or two!
In the Men's 60H, the favored Kurt Powdar False-Started, and was out!
But Sincere (!!) Rhea sped a 7.69, to show how sincere (Sic!) his effort was!!
This makes him 17th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Sincerely so!
LOL
Brianna Williams made her presence known, but her winning 60 time of 7.28 wasn't as fast as I thought possible!
Of course, she's new to INdoor track, and is much better at the OUTdoor distances!
Her time makes her 13th A-T HS, tied with 2 others!
Thelma Davies gave Williams a race, hitting the line in 7.30, making her 17th A-T HS, tied with 6 others!
Another big name--Tamari Davis--won the 200 in 23.24, tying her PR, and thus remaining 6th A-T HS!!
The Women's 60H had a good set of marks!
Shadajah Ballard ran 8.11 for the W, and is now 5th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Jasmin Jones was 2nd in 8.22, but it's not a PR!
Aasia Laurencia ran faster in the heats--her 8.25 there making her 19th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Jasmin Tilman ran 8:28 in the heats, making her 22nd A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Alia Armstrong ran 8:32 in the final, making her 23rd A-T HS!!
Just as I said was possible in my blog's Preview, WT specialist Monique Hardy added a couple of feet to her PR, her 64-7.50 winner moving her from 6th A-T HS to 4th!
Micah Williams came through the tape first in the 60, his 6.60 moving him from 9th A-T HS, tied with 6 others, to 3rd!
Mario Heslop took the 200 in 20.90, the season's first (and only!) sub-21!
He moves from 12th A-T HS, tied with 3 others, to 4th!!
Justin Robinson took the Men's 400 in 46.55, moving from 9th A-T HS to 5th!
In 2nd came Ashton Allen's 46.99, making him 15th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
The Women's 400 was a good one also!
Kimberly Harris sped the two laps in 52.62, moving her from 23rd to 6th on the A-T HS list!
Britton Wilson's 52.72 moves her from 11th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 7th!
The Men's TJ produced some unexpected list changes!
Justin Forde improved to 51-3, moving him from 18th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 17th, also tied with 1 other!
Christin Alexon's 50-10 makes him 22nd A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
The Men's Mile was a goody!
Jake Renfree's 4:06.39 makes him 9th A-T HS!
Cole Sprout ended 2nd in 4:06.68, making him 13th A-T HS!
And Nick Foster's 4:07.18 makes him 18th A-T HS!
As the Armory always does in Mile races, they provide official splits at 1500 meters!
Renfree's 3:50.49 makes him 10th A-T HS!
Sprout's 3:50.75 makes him 12th A-T HS!
And Foster's 3:51.72 makes him 23rd A-T HS!
Other key NBIN results---
Max Hanson's 17-5.50 in the Men's PV makes him 17th A-T HS!
In the Women's event, Karli Thompson's 13-6.25 makes her 23rd A-T HS, tied with 2 others!!
Aiden Felty's 66-8.75 in the Men's SP beat Tripp Piperi's brother Pat's 66-3.75!!
Trey Knight threw far enough for an easy win, his WT measuring 80 feet even!
In the Men's Two Mile, Devin Hart's 3K split of 8:25.45 makes him the caboose on that list!
The 5000's---especially the Women's--were FAR below NBIN's high standards of excellence!
After all, the Women broke the HSR there 7 years running--pardon the pun--from 2011 to 2017!!
This year??
The winning time of 17:11.47 was the slowest in too many years to remember!!
(Forever??)
Her name was Noelle Adrioens!
So this time the Men prevailed, getting a couple of new names on my list!
Carter Cheeseman's 14:40.01 makes him 13th A-T HS!
He was followed closely by Corey Corgas's 14:40.75, which makes him 14th A-T
HS!!
Overall, enough elite HS level Records and Marks to satisfy even this most jaded fan!
And guess what??
It's time this blog switches to the OUTdoor season!!
But first I'll do my usual AOY picks for INdoors!
Hopefully, I'll do all that in the net week or two!!
Before I close, just in is a report of a 29-3 LJ OUTdoors in Cuba by Juan Echevarias!!
It'had a wind of 3.3, but it was the first 29 footer under any conditions in many years!!
A HUGE improvement over his INdoor marks this season!!
See you soon!
