2019 NBIN Preview (MEN & WOMEN)

Just as I said in my 2018 Preview of this meet, the 2019 fields don't point to much--if any--improvement from last year!
There ARE a few superstars (Athing Mu, Trey Knight, Anna Hall, and Katelyn Tuohy), but not much of a back-up gang!!
Nonetheless, this IS the HS Championship meet for INdoors, so let's take a look at who's who and what's what!

Basic guidelines are--
Events are listed in order of the finals!
Meet Record possibilities are given (along with the MR's!!).
Some key names to watch are also offered!!
The Men's and Women's events generally follow in consecutive order, so each event will carry BOTH sexes Preview!
The Men's MR's are listed first in the parentheses!

Most of today will be all about the Emerging Elites!

Friday, March 8
5000 (14:06.78 and 15:55.75)
These are by far the WORST pair of 5K fields I've seen since my blog began!!
Only Carter Cheeseman for the Men, and Kaitlynn Wolfe are given any chance to make my Top 24 lists!
Near the bottom!!
BTW, Ms Wolfe is famous (or infamous??) for ending 2nd (over two minutes behind!) Katelyn Tuohy when Tuohy smashed the HSR last year!!

DMR (9:56.18 and 11:34.85)
The Rizzo brothers--Matt and Alex--will lead Bronxville's squad, while Sam Affolder will probably anchor Virginia's Jungle TC!
Ms Tuohy will lead the Red Raider crew from NY!
(Will she run under 4:35??)

Women's High Jump (6-0.50)
This is actually an excellent field, so the MR odds are 75-25!
Morgan Smalls, Taylor Wright, Jenna Rogers, Nyagua Bayak, and Anna Hall will all challenge the 6 foot barrier!

Pentathlon (4307 & 4068)
Never heard of any of the guys, but Anna Hall is here on the Women's side!
Can she top the 4302 she scored at USATF?
She'll surely SHATTER the MR!!
A score of 4500 is NOT impossible!

Saturday, March 9
Mile Walk (6:06.13 and 6:49.12)
No Male names to offer, but enjoy watching Taylor Ewert try to break her HSR--and this slower MR!!
She should get both!!
A true mega talent!!

Shuttle Hurdle Relay (28.62 and 30.44)
No teams to suggest for the Gold, but MR's are still possible!

4 X Mile Relay (17:01.82 & 19:59.24)
No really speedy anchors, so I doubt we'll see any MR's here!

SMR (3:24.02 and 3:52.68)
Again, no big names here, so the MR's should survive!

4X800 Relay (7:36.99 and 8:54.11)
Sorry, but none of the biggies are in this event, so I doubt any MR's will go down!

Men's Long Jump (26-0.25)
Kenneth Wei is the only guy to reach 25-0 this year--and ONLY 25-0!
So no MR!

Women's Shot Put (56-7.50)
No girl over 49 feet this season, so ZERO chance for a MR!

Men's PV (19-1)
This really lousy MR will be SMASHED tomorrow--mark my words!
LIAR!!
Nathan Stone is the best this event can offer!

Women's Long Jump (21-3.25)
Jasmine Moore and Morgan Smalls should battle it out here, but both are better at other events!
MR will probably stand!

Men's Shot Put (75-4.25)
Pat Piperi (Tripp's brother), Trey Knight, and Aiden Felty are the best here, although Knight is MUCH better in the WT!
MR stands!

Men's High Jump (7-5.25)
Trey Allen leads this event, but he's just gotten to 7 feet so far, so no MR!

Sunday, March 10
4X200 Relay (1:26.21 and 1:34.75)
No MR's here either!!

2 Mile (8:40.70 and 9:55.92)
Ryan Oosting has some talent, but not enough to even go below 8:50, let alone approach the MR!
He's joined by Devin Hart and Liam Mirrphy.

I'm separating my commentary on the Women's Deuce!
One reason--I strongly feel Mary Cain's iconic HSR, as well as Melody Fairchild's equally iconic MR--is going DOWN!!
Katelyn Tuohy has the ability to diop into the 9:20's!!
Whether she can do it alone is the key question!
Does she need a field of Professionals for this to happen?
Or is the pressure put upon her by the OTHER huge star in this race--Katelynn Hart--enough to spur Tuohy to move those legs faster than any other HS girl has ever done??
And Hart better watch HER back, because also in this field are Walker supreme Taylor Ewert, Brooke Rauber, and Grace Connelly!
This could be THE event of the entire meet!!

60H (7.40 and 8.02)
Kurt Powdar is the best dude here, but the MR is too good!
The Women are led by Jasmine Jones and Kori Carter!
But their MR is safe also!

60 (6.57 and 7.25)
The Men have torn up the track in this fastest event!
Lance Lang, Marcellus Moore, and Micah Williams have all run between 6.62 and 6.65 this year!
I'd suggest to watch the clock, as well as the race!
We could see THREE sub-6.60's here!
Could be historic!
The MR---which is the HSR!---could go down!!

As for the Women's race, it could be equally historic!
That's because Brianna Williams is entered!
She ran 11.13 in the 100 last OUTdoor season, and could approach the HSR of 7.19!
(Too bad Tamari Davis has chosen the 200 as her sprint event here!!)
But Williams might hear the footsteps of Thelma Davies or Jasmine Jones behind her!!

400 (46.31 and 51.61)
Both of these MR's will be there when the dust settles!
Kayla Davis is fast, but she's yet to reach the level of Syd the Kid!
She'll have Victoria Vanriele, Britton Wilson, and Vanessa Watson for challengers!
The Men have a couple to watch--Ashton Allen and Justin Robinson!

Mile (4:03.84 and 4:36.61)
Both of these MR's might be approached, but they won't need flak vests to protect themselves!
Cole Sprout seems the most likely to challenge the Men's MR, but he'll need to keep an eye on Carter Cheeseman, Matthew Payamps, and Matt Maton's brother, Daniel!!
The Women will be led by Marlee Starliper!
She might break into the 4:30's, but closer to 4:40 than 4:35!
Grace Connelly, Tori Starcher, and Zofia Dudek should be watched!

800 (1:49.46 and 2:03.59)
The Men's event actually has a pretty good field, despite no one being under 1:50 yet!
Luis Peralta, Malcolm Going, Matt Rizzo, Alfred Charamu, and Daniel Maton might all challenge that barrier!

ATHING MU!!
Stand aside, Katelyn Tuohy!
After all, Tuohy's most likely target is the High School  Record!
Mu has an EXCELLENT chance to take down Ajee Wilson's AMERICAN Record!
And a few have even spoken the words WORLD RECORD and Ms Mu's name in the same breath---and they have NOT been committed to insane asylums---yet!!

Don't forget her 600 AR of 1:23.57 at Millrose.
If she hits the 600 point in 1:26 flat, watch the seconds tick away as she rounds that final lap!!
A lap of 32.5 (off of that 1:26.0) would give her the American Record!
The WR would need a lap in 29.8!!
She proved at Millrose that she's capable of such a finish---but that was just three laps!!
This is four!
Hold your breath, my friends!
And remember--this girl is still just 16 years old!!

(Oh gee, forgot to mention Victoria Vanriele and Lily Flynn are also in the race!)

200 (20.63 and 23.23)
Again, the Women conquer!
Tamari Davis is the Queen in this event!
And she could get the Meet AND HS Records!!
A sub-23 time is NOT impossible for this super sprinter!!
She'll have Kayla Davis, Kori Carter, and Thelma Davies in her rear-view mirror!
The Men are led by Mario Heslop and Marcellus Moore!
Also watch for Charles Lewis!

4X400 Relay (3:13.34 and 3:39.70)
This Relay also has no major figure to mention!
But watch for possible MR's anyway!

Women's Weight Throw (68-2.50)
The two best WT Women are here, but that MR )s also the HSR!
It might be JUST beyond their current levels!
Monique Hardy has thrown it over 62 feet, and might have a shot (Sic!) at 64 or 65!
She's joined by Cheyenne Figueroa!

Men's Triple Jump (52-7.50)
Justin Forde is the best this weak event has to offer!
Absolutely ZERO chance of a MR!

Men's Weight Throw (92-7.50)
The fact that Trey Knight has already PR'ed by several feet this season does not bode well for his chances to add ANOTHER 6 feet to that PR!!
But who knows?
This guy is special!!
Already throwing well with the Professional implement, Knight could reach 88 or even 90 feet, but I feel the MR--just 7-plus inches less than the amazing HSR--will probably have to wait for his Senior year!
Yes, that's right, this BEAST is just an 11th Grader!!

Women's Triple Jump (44-2)
Jasmine Moore has been knocking on the door of super stardom all of her career!
She hit 43 even earlier this season, a PR INdoors!
Can she add over a foot on Sunday?/
I doubt it, but a few inches--Yes!
Also watch for the ubiquitous Morgan Smalls!

Women's Pole Vault (14-2.75)
The season leader--Chloe Cunliffe--and the only 14 footer of 2019 so far, ain't here!
So the MR will likely survive until at least 2020!
Watch for Lindsey Abshon and Genaya Hirata to try to raise their bars!

The meet has already begun with a series of field events and Emerging Elite races, plus slower sections of the Two Mile!
So my Preview is out ahead of the first event Previewed here!

  1. I love your previews!

If you have any information on how these meets might be watched -- whether TV or streaming video on the internet -- can that be included in the preview?

    Thank you!
