NCAA--MULTIble Marvels

Can't figure out my title?
Well, you'll understand in just a sec!  For it was in the Women's Multi--the Pentathlon--where we got our only Collegiate Records!
And yes, "Records" is with an "S"!!
For we saw a Record within a Record--of sorts!

Kendell Williams blew away the talented field by breaking her own Collegiate Record of 4678 with her point total of 4703!
And it might have been more, but speculation is that she cruised through the 800 to preserve some energy for next week's go at the WORLD--as in the World Championships in Portland, where she's been selected to compete!!

Her task was made a whole bunch easier when, shockingly, Akela Jones--who many said was a heavy favorite!--crashed the final hurdle in the 60H, getting up to time 10.98, for 540 points!--about 500 less than Williams got for her 8.09 PR!
Jones continued, however, and the Record Books are ecstatic she did!

In the HJ, after Williams ended with a good 6-1.25, Jones went on to a  tie for the CR at 6-6!!

In order for that mark to be official, she needed to compete in all 5 events.
So she began the 800, but DNF'ed.
As with Williams, it MIGHT be because she'll be competing at the WC also, for Barbados!
If she does, it will be VERY interesting to see how the Jones-Williams "duel" unfolds!

Anyway, Williams, as noted, broke her own CR, and gets the Junior Class record, as well as the NCAA Meet Record!
She moves from 5th to 4th on the A-T US list!
But she misses the World list by 66 points!
Next week?

Amelie Iuel scored 4425 points, making her 12th A-T Collegiate.
Georgia Ellenwood is now 16th A-T Collegiate with her 4390 score.
And Payton Stumbaugh scored 4371 points, for 18th A-T Collegiate!

Jones missed her 3 tries at 2.01, or 6-7!!
She breaks her own Barbados National Record.
She also gets a tie for the CR and the NCAA Meet Record., as well as  sole ownership of the Senior Class record, as Destinee Hooker was a Junior when she jumped her 6-6!
Oh yes, she's 1 inch short of the World DDD!

I'm not finished with Akela!
She also LJ'ed--during the Pentathlon!!--22-3.75, breaking her own Barbados National Record.
She also moves from 8th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 6th!
If only that hurdle hadn't been in her way!

In the Men's Heptathlon, Zach Ziemek had his Day of Days, winning with his 6173 point total!
He moves from 19th A-T Collegiate to 5th!
And he moves from 21st to 11th on the US list!

Pau Tonnesen scored 6027 points, making him 13th A-T Collegiate.
Harrison Williams's 5937 points makes him 21st A-T Collegiate, and 22nd A-T US!

Lexi Weeks also had a good day, nabbing a  small PR, going over 15-2.25 in the PV.
She gets the NCAA Meet Record, which was co-held by the former Razorback Sandi Morris, as well as Kaitlyn Petrillose!
She also breaks her own Freshman Class record!
She moves from 3rd A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, to 2nd, where she's alone!
She also moves from 12th A-T US, tied with 5 others, to 9th!
Megan Clark finished at 14-9 in 2nd!

Washington's Diamare Planell Cruz got a PR too, rising to 14-7.25.
She moves from 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 5 others, to 15th, where she tied with 6 others!

Speaking of sort of small PR's, Keturah Orji added 1.50 inches to her INdoor TJ mark, her 46-4 easily (VERY easily, as 2nd was just 44-0!!) winning.
She ties the Collegiate Soph Class Record!
While she remains 4th A-T US, she moves from 6th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 5th, where she also has 1 other for company!

The 60's--both flat and with hurdles--were fast and filled with exciting surprises!
Slightly favored Ronnie Baker got a dogfight from Leroy Burrell's son, Cameron, just nipping him, 6.47 to 6.48!
For Baker, besides getting the NCAA Meet Record (which Burrell had gotten in  the heats!), this moves him from 7th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others, to 2nd!
He's 11th A-T US, tied with 2 others!
And on the World list, he's 16th, tied with 6 others!

For Burrell, he breaks his own Junior Class Record of 6.50, set in the heats!
He  moves from 5th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, to 4th, tied with 1 other.
On the US list, he moves from 21st, tied with 4 others, to 14th, where he's tied with 4 others!
One of those he's tied with?
Daddy!!
Same with the World list!!
There, he's 23rd A-T, tied with 7 others, including Daddy Leroy!!
Small World, eh?!

The Men's 60 also saw Christian Coleman improve to 6.52, after a heat time of 6.53!
He moves from 17th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 13th, where he's tied with 4 others!

On the Women's side, new blood took over!
In the heats, new Duck Hannah Cunliffe sped a super PR of 7.12, nabbing the Soph Class Record to boot!
This made her 4th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others.
She also became 14th A-T US, tied with 4 others!
In the 200 heats, she got a BIG PR, going from 23.24 down to 22.96!
She would improve on this in the final, to 22.85--which makes her 24th A-T US!
However, she misses the Collegiate DDD by 0.02 seconds!

Teahna Daniels, a Freshman, finished in 7.14 in her heat!
This made her 8th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!
In the final, she improved by 0.03, thus nipping Cunliffe, who matched her heat time of 7.12!
Her 7.11 is the Frosh Class Record.
She moves from 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, to 4th!
And on the US list, she's now 17th, tied with 2 others!
New Blood indeed!!

Makiah Brisco also ran fast, her 7.17 moving her from 24th A-T Collegiate, tied with 6 others, to 21st, tied with 3 others!

In the Women's 60H, Cindy Ofili got the win, running 7.89, to edge Sasha Wallace's 7.91.
Cindy is now 6th A-T Collegiate.
Sasha moves from 15th A-T Collegiate to 7th, tied with 1 other!
And she's now 24th A-T US, tied with 1 other!

Devon Allen looked pretty dominant in the Men's 60H, first PR'ing in the heats to 7.58.  where his time moved him from 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others, to 15th, where he was also tied with 3 others!
He improved to 7.56 in the final, moving from being tied with 3 others at 15th on the Collegiate DDD, to no ties, but remaining 15th!

Jordan Moore also ran 7.58 in his heat, moving him from 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others, to 14th, also tied with 3 others!

The Women's 5000 and 3000 were both won by Notre Dame's Molly Seidel, who is having HER year!
But the longer race--which was supposed to be a "Gunfight at the NCAA Corral" with Allie Ostrander, soon turned tragic.
Ostrander stayed close to Seidel--in 4th--striding along like she was waiting to pounce.
Then, suddenly, she was kneeling on the infield, crying!
Turns out she'd been having a knee problem for 2 weeks, hadn't trained much, if at all, but wanted to try racing anyway!
Her DNF was sad, but the injury doesn't appear too bad, and she should be back for OUTdoor track!

In the 3000, Seidel again won easily, timing 8:57.86!
This makes her 15th A-T Collegiate!

After ND teammate Anna Rohrer started dropping back in the 5K, Michigan's Erin Finn took her place, hounding Seidel just off her right shoulder.
But Seidel's finishing kilometer was too much, and she won easily, her 15:15.21 a 4 second PR, and moving from 4th to 3rd on the Collegiate list, while retaining her 8th spot on the US list!

For Finn, her 15:23.16 gives her the Junior Class Record!
She's now 6th A-T Collegiate, and 12th A-T US!

The Men's 800, supposed to be one of the highlights of the meet, was still okay, but when star Frosh Donavan Brazier left the track with a back spasm, it was left to Clayton Murphy to claim a slow 1:46.68 win.
He's now 17th A-T Collegiate, and the same on the US list!

Eliud Rutto was 2nd, running 1:46.81.
He's now 20th A-T Collegiate.
But I was curious about him, so Googled him.
He's supposedly 27 years old!!
So why is he allowed to compete as a Collegian, and especially as only a Junior Classman??
Just as with High Schoolers, who aren't allowed to compete beyond their 19th year, so shouldn't Collegiate athletes be allowed to compete beyond Age 23!!
I thought the rules were changed after Henry Rono, then 26, broke all those Collegiate Records back in 1978!!
I may have to make my OWN rules about this!!
At least for my Record Book and this blog!

The Women's 400 was a barn-burner!
Courtney Okolo revved up her mighty engine, and roared to a 50.69 runaway win!
She moves from 12th to 3rd on the A-T Collegiate list!
And from 11th to 4th on the US DDD.
On the World list, she's the caboose, in 24th place!

Chased OFF my World list was someone known as SRR--aka Sanya Richards-Ross!!

While not very close, 3 women had a good race a second or more back!
Taylor Ellis-Watson ran 51.51.
It's a PR by a teensy 0.01, so she remains 15th on both Collegiate and US Top 24's!

Chrisann Gordon ran 51.69, making her 20th A-T Collegiate.
And Shamier Little's 51.74  makes her 21st A-T US.
But all those who finished ahead of her gave her a whirlwind tour of the Collegiate list!
She first moved BACKWARDS, from 24th to OFF the list in 25th, then back ON, ending up in 21st!

Back to the Field for awhile, where the shockwaves near the Shot Put ring can still be felt!
The HEAVY favorite in the Women's SP---and if she'd been able to go, at the USATF meet!--Raven Saunders did NOT even make the final 9 Putters!!
Her first effort was super sub-par, and then she fouled the next 2, ending just off the final 9!
Reminded me of when Betty Heidler didn't qualify for the Moscow WC final in the Hammer Throw, while then being the World Record holder!!

Anyway, without Raven in the mix, Dani Winters (of Kansas State) won with a throw of 58-11.50.
This makes her 16th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!

An unknown (to me, at least), Vesta Bell took the Women's WT.
Her 78-6.75 makes her 15th A-T Collegiate.
She's also 21st A-T World, tied with 1 other!

Alex Young won the Men's WT with a 78-1 throw.
He moves from 19th A-T Collegiate to 8th, where he's tied with 1 other!

Cameron Brown was 2nd with a throw of 77-2.75!
It's a PR, but he remains 14th A-T Collegiate!

Quanesha Burks matched Akela Jones's 22-3.75 (which she'd jumped in her Pentathlon--see above!), which won her the open LJ.
She moves from 9th A-T Collegiate to 6th, where she's tied with 1 other.
She's also now 10th A-T US, tied with 1 other!

Ed Cheserek had what SOME people consider a great meet!
He won the 5000 and 3000, then won the DMR for his Duckmates with a 1600 anchor in the 3:52's.
And that came just an hour after his 3K.

But most of the glamour--IMHO--was taken off that DMR performance, as he AGAIN just JOGGED both of the open races!
Maybe there should be an "Honest Effort" rule for distance runners!
And the first to get a FAILING grade would be the MoBot and the King!!

Anyway, that DMR was won by the Ducks in 9:27.27, proving yet again that you don't need an Oversize Track to run fast times!!
This moves Oregon from 11th A-T School to 4th, tied with 1 other!

Washington's Huskies ran 9:28.00.
This makes them 7th A-T School.
Izaic Yorks anchored in the 3:54's, again proving my point that you CAN run fast times on LEGAL tracks!

The meet-closing 4X400 Relays gave up some good times.
Texas ran 3:05.26, making them the 14th fastest School, tied with 1 other!

In the Women's race, Arizona's 3:32.78 makes them the Collegiate A-T 18th fastest School.
And Iowa's 3:33.03 makes them 19th School on the list!

A few non-NCAA marks to add!

Ruth Beitea recently HJ'ed 6-6, breaking her own Age 36 record!

Sandra Perkovic opened her OUTdoor season with a solid Discus Throw of 231-7.
She seems to do this every year!!
But it missed the Age 25 record by 3 inches!!

In South Africa, two items of note!
Akani Simbine blasted a 100 in a South Africa National Record of 9.96!

Following that, a few days later, Wayde Van Niekerk sprinted a 9.98--with a max 2.0 wind, at altitude!!
But it strengthens his hold on 2nd place in my 100-200-400 Combined Events list!
His 9.98, 19.94, and 43.48 trio of marks adds to 1:13.40!

Australia's Brooke Stratton LJ'ed 23-1.75 OUTdoors for the Australia National Record!

Finally, in the Jacksonville FL Gate River Run 15K, Ben True won in 44:03 on a hot day, while Amy Cragg took the Women's race in 50:18!

Stay close by!
Coming in a few hours will be my TWO posts covering the NBIN.
Hint--It was maybe the GREATEST High School meet EVER!
And it surely outshone the USATF--by about the 3000 miles separating The Armory from Portland's temporary INdoor track!!
(The TONS of fantastic Records and Marks from the NBIN is the main reason my reports of it are to arrive so late!! It took me--sometimes--whole pages to detail just ONE event--and occasionally TWO pages of notes!!  Stick around!!)
