NBIN --The Men

This year's New Balance INdoor National Championship meet was a 3-day tour of the Record Factory---as in HS Records!
And Meet Records.
And Class Records!
.
In 2014, my report's title was "Six HSR's...and that's not all!".
Yes, 6 HSR's were broken in that meet.
I also noted that 12 Meet Records fell that year!
(The numbers were less in 2015, thus my use of the 2014 meet as my example!)

Well, the 2016 meet saw SEVEN High School Records going down.
And there were SIXTEEN Meet Records that fell.
(Again, NOT counting Emerging Elite and Freshman Class events!)

In that 2014 report, I noted that people were calling it the "greatest HS meet ever"!
So, since MORE HS and Meet records were broken THIS year, wouldn't that make THIS year's meet the greatest HS meet in history?

Well, let's see what happened, shall we?--then YOU decide!

For the Men, it was a choice between Grant Holloway and the Lyles Brothers--particularly Noah--as the STARS of the meet.
But they had to share the prize!

Holloway's attempt to break Gunnar Nixon's 4307 HSR  in the Pentathlon fell short, as his winning point total was 4230!
It makes him 3rd A-T HS!
Kyle Garland finished well back, his 3699 total making him 23rd A-T HS.

But the Pent was just the beginning for Holloway!
In the 60H final, he blasted down the track to a HSR of 7.53!
He added the Senior Class and NBIN Meet Record to his collection!
He moves from 2nd A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to the top!

Braxton Canady ran 7.66.
He moves from 21st A-T HS, tied with 3 others, to 8th!
Marcus Krah sped 7.69, making him 11th A-T HS!
And Trey Cunningham  ran 7.71, which moves him from 23rd A-T HS, tied with 2 others, to 12th, where he's also tied with 2 others!

Noah Lyles took down the X-Man's 200 HSR!!
That's Xavier Carter, in case you weren't around a few years ago!
In the last individual event of the meet, he zipped one lap in 20.63.
However, it was his own Meet Record he broke!
He also gets the Senior Class Record
And he moves from 2nd to 1st on the HS list!

But Noah's Record wasn't the only record in the 200.
In a heat, 15 year old Tyrese Cooper CRUSHED the Frosh Class Record--his own!--by 0.32!--running 21.22.
It makes him 14th A-T HS, tied with 3 others!
Cooper also was a busy young man!
He ran some non-record times in the 60.
In the final of the 200, he was DQ'ed for running out of his lane!
Maxwell Willis's 21.32 in a heat misses the Top 24 list by 0.01 seconds!

The Brother's Lyles ran legs in the heats and final of the 4X200 Relay.
Don't have their splits, but they dominate their team, the TC Williams TC out of Virginia.
They ran a solid 1:26.86 in the heat, then crushed that mark in the final with the 2nd fastest 4X200 Relay in HS history, just 0.12 from the HSR--time of 1:26.21.
Both times were Meet Records, so you might even ADD an MR to the total I gave at the onset!
I only counted the LAST Meet Record (or, in one case--with the Women--the last HSR in an event!!) in my above totals!

Josephus ran the 60, his time of 6.65 making him 13th A-T HS, tied with 3 others--including brother Noah!!

The 400 didn't have super fast times, but it had some depth!
("Fast" is a relative term as applied here!  LOL)

Keshun Reed's 47.01 improved his PR by 0.08 seconds, and moves him from 10th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 9th.
Will Allen's 47.07 came next, and made him 10th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!

Brian Herron tied the Frosh Class record with his 47.97..
He also ran in the Emerging Elite 200, with his final of 21.77 being his fastest.

Brandon McGorty ran multiple times too!
The one that produced a HSR was the Sprint Medley Relay.
McGorty--brother of Stanford's Sean--anchored his Xbc TC team to a 3:24.02 HSR time!
His split was 1:49.83 for the 800--about 2 seconds faster than his open PR!

That open 800 had depth, even if no one broke 1:50!
Michael Slagowski won it in 1:50.29.
He's now 4th A-T HS.
Dominic Perretta's 1:50.58 makes him 8th A-T HS!
Cameron Cooper's 1:50.97 leaves him 12th A-T HS.
And McGorty's 1:51.36 moves him from 20th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 16th, tied with 2 others!

The SP was a good tussle between the two best Putters in the country right now, Jordan Geist and Adrian (Tripp) Piperi.
Geist's non-PR throw of 71-2.75 gave him the Meet Record.
Piperi's 69-2 INdoor PR makes him 10th A-T HS.

Tossed OFF my Top 24 Performers list was an Oldie--Stu Voight, whose 67-0 throw dates from 1966!!

The WT was won, as expected, by Bobby Colantonio, his 81-5.75 not too far from his PR!
But it was Isaiah Rogers's throw of 77-2 which affected my Record Book.
He moves from 19th A-T HS to 17th, tied with 1 other.

Another NBIN Meet Record fell in the LJ.
Rayvon Grey's 26-0.25 gave him that Record!
And it moves him from 18th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, all the way into 3rd!!

One HSR, MR, and every other kind of record was expected--or at least hoped for--from Mondo Duplantis.
While I didn't see the event during the webcast, so don't know what happened, I was surprised he reached only 17-1.
He did try 3 times at 17-9, but I guess he can't get a HSR EVERY time he Vaults!!

The HJ might have a couple of new names to follow soon.
Both Darius Corbin and Jaron Brooks cleared 7-1.75, with Corbin getting the W.
Corbin misses the HS DDD by a quarter-inch!
Brooks's mark isn't a PR!
He's jumped 7-2!

The 5000 was slow, but it produced  a good little group of times for my list.
Eric van der Els won it, time of 14:42.41.
He's now 15th A-T HS.
Aaron Groff's time of 14:43.10 makes him 16th A-T HS.
Dominic Hockenbury's 14:45.09 makes him 18th A-T HS.
And Viraj Deokar's 14:46.28 leaves him 19th A-T HS.

In the Two Mile, Garek Bielaczyc's 8:57.03  gives him the final spot on my Top 24 Performers list!

Besides Mondo in the PV, another "Most Watched" athlete in The Armory was two-time sub-4:00 Miler Andrew Hunter!
Opting to run Relays only in his final HS INdoor meet, he cruised through 1600 in 4:05.26 for his team's DMR.
Then he jogged a 4:09 Mile in The Jungle TC's 4XMile Relay.
The team finished back a ways, time of 17:33.15.
Nice little tempo run!

Well, that does it for the Men's portion of this great meet!
Let me return to those numbers I tossed out earlier.

As has been normal in recent years, the Women broke more Records, and had more Top Tier Marks than the Men did.
The Women got 4 HSR's to the Men's 3.
And they got 10 Meet Records to the Men's 6.

Now let's see how this meet compared to the other big meets of this weekend.

The NCAA got just 2 Collegiate Records, both on the Women's side!
The USATF--aka the Trials for next weekend's World Championships??

ZERO American Records--sort of equivalent, for comparison's sake, to the HS and Collegiate Record categories.
And just ONE Meet Record--on the Men's side.

Is it fair to compare these three meets, as to Record output?
Yes and no!

Yes, because all are THE biggest meet in their own little worlds!
The NCAA is the Collegiate Championship meet!
The NBIN has been considered the "official" HS Championship meet for several years now.
And the USATF is SUPPOSED to be the United States Track and Field Championship meet.
And THIS year, as the OUTdoor USATF becomes for the Olympic Games or the World Championships in those years, the INdoor USATF served a dual purpose--as the US Championship meet, and as the selection meet for TeamUSA heading (back) to Portland in a few days!

That many athletes and fans consider the INdoor version of the WC a non-entity of sorts is of no matter!!
If you don't want the honor of representing your nation in a WORLD Championship meet--INdoors or OUTdoors--that's YOUR problem!!
Then don't complain when, at the end of your career, you own no Medals or Championship wins!
The USATF is there every year!
The INdoor WC is there every other year!

To bypass such an opportunity--ESPECIALLY when this prestigious meet is right there in your own home land--well, it's beyond me why ANYone would opt OUT of going!
(Given the usual "good reasons"--injury, illness, death or other emergency in your family, pregnant, etc--for NOT going!)

Anyway, enough of this!
We still have the passion and the enthusiasm and the PRIDE of competing in the most important meet available to you that is annually displayed by these CHILDREN at the NBIN!!
Thank you to everyone who volunteers to produce this fantastic meet!

And you'll see HOW fantastic this year's edition was when you read my Women's report--hopefully in a few short hours!
