2022 Prefontaine Classic

Did my Prefontaine Classic Preview help you follow and enjoy the meet?
(As ever, I missed a key name here and there, or was too giddy about a Record falling!)
But we're here to give you the facts--just the facts!

One way for me to measure how good an event was is to see how many athletes made my Top 24 A-T Performers lists (DDD's), or how many improved their marks, if already on the list!
With that criteria in mind, the Women's Two Mile topped the entire 2 days of action!
EIGHT of the runners are now on my World list (Only Konstanze Klosterhalfen was already there!), and SEVEN Americans made my US list!!

NOTE: As my readers know, I do NOT honor any results from Francine Niyonsaba, Caster Semenya, Margaret Wambui, Christine Mboma, or Beatrice Masilingi!!  Thus, the winner (as I see it!) of this race was Beatrice Chebet!!

Beatrice Chebet led a trail of Women in the Friday evening Two Mile, her 9:14.71 giving her the Age 22 Record!
She is ranked 10th A-T World!
Laura Galvan's 9:15.79 is the new National Record of Mexico!
She's ranked 11th A-T World!
KoKo was 3rd in 9:16.73, a PR for her!
She breaks her own National Record of Germany, and ranks 13th A-T World!

The first American was Helen Schlactenhaufen, her 9:17.62 making her 3rd A-T US, and 16th A-T World!
Elly Henes's 9:18.73 was next, making her 4th A-T US, and 17th A-T World!
Her 8:42.58 at 3000 enroute makes her 24th A-T US!
OFF the US list is a real oldies icon, Jan Merrill!
Her 8:42.6 was run in 1978!!

Edinah Jebitok was 6th, her 9:19.01 giving her the best 6th Place mark!
She also gets the Age 20 Record!
It makes her 18th A-T World!
Eleanor Fulton continued the string of US Women on the list!
Her 9:20.17 makes her 5th A-T US, and 20th A-T World!
More significantly, it's the Age 29 Record, and the best 7th Place mark!
Right on her shoulder came Whittni Morgan (formerly Orton), whose 9:20.19 is the best 8th Place mark!
She ranks 6th A-T US, and 21st A-T World!
Dani Jones was 9th in 9:35.67!
This makes her 13th A-T US!
Ella Donaghu ended 10th in 9:40.44!
She ranks 16th A-T US!
Finally, Taryn Rawlings's 9:41.11 ranks her 18th A-T US!

Before this race, the World's 24th place time was close to 9:25--it's now 4 seconds faster!
The US's 24th best was 9:54 & change before, and after, it's 9:44!!
Solid movement, but still WAY more to go!!

The "WR attempts" by Joshua Cheptegei and Letesenbet Gidey both failed!
Cheptegei won, but his 12:57.99 was 22 seconds off his target!
Gidey didn't even win the race!!
Ejgeyehu Taye took over and ran away to a great 14:12.98, giving her the Meet Record, and ranking her 5th A-T World!
Gidey struggled to a 2nd place 14:24.59!
Rachel Daniel was 3rd in 14:36.66, which breaks her own National Record of Eritrea!

The Women's 3000SC was a blazer, but the pair of top Americans didn't do too well!
Norah Tanui, now a citizen of Kazakhstan, broke her own National Record with her 8:57.97 winner!
She also gets the Age 26 Record!
Right with her till the last hurdle was Winfred Yavi, who finished in 8:58.71!
She ranks 7th A-T World!
In 3rd came Mekides Abebe, her 9:03.26 making her 12th A-T World!
Peruth Chemutai was next in 9:05.54, while in 6th was Werkwuha Getachew's 9:07.81!
This makes her 22nd A-T World!

Back a ways, and never in the mix, were Emma Coburn (9:18) and Courtney Frerichs (9:20)!
They were basically rust-busters for the pair!

Faith Kipyegon said she was surprised to run so fast, but I wasn't!
Her 3:52.59 broke her own Meet Record, so where's the surprise?
Plus, she had INdoor WR holder Gudaf Tsegay to push her!
Tsegay wound up running 3:54.21.
Then there was a big gap to the 2nd group, led by Gabby DeBues-Stafford's 3:58.62.
Sinclaire Johnson wins the prize for Biggest Surprise, as her 3:58.85 makes her 7th A-T US!
Jessica Hull's 3:59.31 and Elle Purrier St Pierre's 3:59.68 followed!
Cory McGee ended just 9th, but her 4:00.34 is a PR, and makes her 14th A-T US!

The iconic Bowerman Mile was the last distance race of the day!
There's no stopping Jakob Ingebrigtsen, it seems, no matter the pace!
He eased into place, then went ahead when needed, and won with 3:49.76.
Ollie Hoare took 2nd with his fastest--3:50.65!
Tim Cheruiyot remained steady, timing 3:50.77 in 3rd.
He held off Abel Kipsang's 3:50.87!

Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker used their old Ducks stomping grounds to prove they can run fast OUTdoor miles also!
Hocker's 3:50.97 makes him 12th A-T US!
Teare ran 3:51.70, ranking him 20th A-T US!

OFF the US list are two rather famous names--
Galen Rupp's 3:52.11 from 2013, and Craig Masback's 3:52.02--from 1979!!

Well back in 13th (But not last--that honor went to Clay Murphy!!) came HS sensation Colin Sahlman!
His 3:56.24 puts him 3rd A-T HS, behind only Alan Webb and Jim Ryun!
There are now 13 HS'ers who have gone sub-4 OUTdoors!!

Taken FROM the HS list was one Gerry Lindgren, whose 4:01.5 from 1964 was maybe his LEAST known time!!

Michael Norman ran the closest to his 2019 PR of 43.45 here Saturday, as his 43.60 gave him the Pre Classic Meet Record!!
Kirani James ended 2nd in 44.02, while Matthew Hudson-Smith JUST got the National Record of Great Britain with his 44.35!

Ryan Crouser used a new technique (Find the video on USATF-TV, because I'm an idiot when it comes to explaining technique!!) and won the SP with a Crouser-Common distance of 75-6.25!
Joe Kovacs was in good form, his 73-9.50 taking 2nd!
Tom Walsh threw 72-0.75 to beat the 71-8 by Darrell Hill!

Elaine Thompson-Herah cruised to an easy win in the 100, her 10.79 beating the 10.92's by Sha'Carri Richardson and Sharicka Jackson!
SCR came out in a costume worthy of Cher or Lady Gaga, even showing some cleavage with her deep V-cut top
And her long fingernails reminded me of Gail Devers in 1992!!
Nonetheless, her 10.92 was a solid "comeback" from recent personal controversies!

While Cheptegei failed miserably in his WR try, Berihu Arigawi used the Saturday race to beat the Meet Record, at least!
His 12:50.05 was a solo run, destroying Mo Farah's old MR!
It also ranks him 23rd A-T World!
Sam Tefera ran his first 5000, ending 2nd in 13:06.86!

In the absence of Athing Mu (a 2nd bout of Covid!!), and despite a good kick by Ajee Wilson, young Brit Keely Hodgkinson made her 1:57.72 look easy!
Wilson ended in 1:58.06, beating the 1:58.44 by Raevyn Rogers.
Sage Hurta ran 1:59.59 in 5th!

Other Pre marks---
Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce jogged 22.41 to take the 200!
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn fought a wind of 0.7 to run 12.45 over the 100H!
She beat Tobi Amusan's 12.58!
Khaddi Sagnia Long Jumped 22-9.75 to pull out the W!

Valarie Allman again defeated Sandra Perkovic in the DT, 224-3 to 214-11.
Trayvon Bromell won the 100 over Fred Kerley, 9.93 to 9.98!
Sam Tanner won a 1500 in 3:34.37, beating the 3:34.85 by Neil Gourley!
Back in 5th, but with a good time, came Hobbs Kessler in 3:36.63!

Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the High Jump with 6-6.75!
She missed 3 tries at 2.03!
Mondo Duplantis Pole Vaulted "only" 19-4.75, so no MR!
Chris Nilsen took 2nd with 19-0.75!
Matching that height in 3rd was Sondre Guttormsen!
But it makes him 8th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
BTW, Guttormsen also Q'ed for the NCAA in Arkansas on Wednesday, so had just 2 days to travel to Oregon and compete on Friday, since the PV (& Women's DT & HJ) was moved to Friday because of feared bad weather on Saturday!!

Finally, Alison Dos Santos had the 400H all to himself, so his 47.23 looks better knowing it was solo!
(Rai Benjamin was one of many dropouts from the meet just days before the event!!)
Khalifah Rosser was 2nd in 48.10, the same time given to Quincy Hall in 3rd!
Hall's mark ranks him 23rd A-T US!

Not a bad meet, but could've been better!
Too many defectors, not so great weather (but nowhere as bad as feared!), and too close to the USATF for Americans!
The "crowd" barely filled maybe one-third of the seats!
Nonetheless, the array of true elites gave those there a good show!

See you soon!

NCAA Qualifiers & USATF 10K's

Hope you don't mind waiting a bit for my full Prefontaine Classic report!
I want to give that meet my full attention--and more space than I could if I were to include everything else that happened in the past week!
The most notable "else" were the NCAA "Regionals", but which are better described as qualifying meets for the Championships!
Many would prefer to stop this nonsense, and return to the time when the Championships would already have its final collection of elite Collegiates, and the fans would be able to spend a full 4 days watching everything--from the qualifying rounds for the field events, the Heptathlon and Decathlon, the heats, semis, and finals of all the running events--everything!!
But we instead have...THIS!

The East Regional was in Indiana, while the West was in Arkansas!
Men's events were on Wednesday and Friday, the Women's were on Thursday and Saturday!

EAST
Trey Cunningham ran 13.21 in the 1st round, but then PR'ed in the 2nd, his 13.07 breaking his own Senior Class Record!
He ranks 4th A-T Collegiate, and 21st A-T US!!
Randolph Ross sped 44.23 over one lap to easily "win" the Q prize!
Alia Armstrong opened with a 12.74 in the 100H, but then was outrun in the 2nd round!
Paula Salmon's 12.78 beat the 12.82 by Armstrong!

Marc Minichello had a Javelin Throw of 263-8, making him 20th A-T Collegiate!
Jillian Shippee's Hammer Throw went 229-10, making her 16th A-T Collegiate!
Adelaide Aquilla had a Shot Put of 62-7.75!

The "battle" (including Anavia Battle!) of the short sprinters was watched very closely.
The first round saw (in different races) Abby Steiner run 22.19, Favour Ofili 22.29, and Battle 22.38!
In the 100, Ofili's 11.02 topped the 11.04 by Steiner!
Steiner's 22.01 was helped by the slightest of illegal winds--2.1.
Favour was "favored" by a helping 0.7 to run 22.08!
Not sure if Steiner ran on the 4 X 100 Relay of Kentucky's 42.95, but they were beaten by Ohio State, whose 42.87 makes them 14th A-T School!

Anna Hall ran the 400H in 55.25, beating the 55.36 by Masai Russell.
Again, don't know if Steiner had a leg on Kentucky's 3:26.90 4 X 400 Relay, but it was enough for them to beat Florida's 3:27.37, and Howard's 3:28.91, which makes them 24th A-T School!!

Shannon Lockhart, a Frosh at Providence, had the fastest 1500 in the East, 4:10.80!
Katelyn Tuohy cruised in the 5000, her 15:27.14 beating the 15:29.07 by Parker Valby!

WEST
Micah Williams's 9.86 was the Sprint of the Regionals, East or West!
He gets the Soph Class Record!
And he ranks 2nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, and 11th A-T US, tied with 3 others!
Jonathan Jones took the one lapper in 44.85 over the 44.87 by Jevaughn Powell!
Texas had the fastest 4 X 400 Relay time--3:00.70!
This makes them 15th A-T School!

Julien Alfred had a 1st round time of 11.00 in the Century!
Stacy Ann Williams's 50.70 beat the 51.04 by Charokee Young!
But Alfred sped a windy (2.2) 10.80 in the 2nd round!
Three other fast times--all also windy, from 2.6 to 2.8--went from 10.82 to 10.89!
In their 2nd round, Williams ran 50.66, while Young's 50.80 topped the 50.96 by Kennedy Simon!
Britton Wilson ran just the 400H (and maybe a Relay leg?), but her 54.87 was the fastest, East or West!
Oregon took the 4 X 100 Relay in 42.74.
Arkansas won the 4 X 400 in 3:25.16, followed by Texas's 3:25.93, Texas A&M's 3:26.49, and Baylor's 3:28.38!

Camryn Rogers just keeps upping her game!
And her Collegiate Record!
The Canadian superstar let her Hammer fly 250-10 for the Collegiate Record, the National Record of Canada, and the Senior Class Record!
She also gets the NCAA Meet Record, and ranks 20th A-T World!!
Alyssa Wilson was a good 2nd with her 239-0!
And don't forget, this was just the Qualifying round!!

Moad Zahafi's 800 took just 1:44.65.
Mykolas Alekna had a Discus Throw of 212-10!
Chinecherem Nnamdi's Javelin Throw sailed 266-2, making him 15th A-T Collegiate!
Chengtuaji's (sp??) Mapaya Triple Jumped a good 56-0, making him 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!

The 10000's at the USATF Championships were run over three weeks early, and NOT at the USATF Championships!
The 10K's, the Walks, and the Multi's were held separately, on separate dates than the rest of the meet!
While the 10's had the privilege of being held at the same venue--Hayward Field--as the remainder of the meet will be, there was still a strange atmosphere felt during the races!
For one thing, the crowd will no doubt be much larger in late June!

As part of the Friday night evening Distance program at the Pre meet, they went off fairly normally, and we now know who will be on TeamUSA at the World Championships in the longest track races!

The Men ran after the Women, but their race was boring (meaning: tactical & slow), and should have opened the two-race show!
After one of the favorites--Will Kincaid--DNF'ed with a side stitch, the race was set up for a snorefest the rest of the way!
Grant Fisher--with a 26:33 PR--should have just run away with it, but instead, he was outkicked by Joe Klecker late in the game!
Fisher's old Stanford teammate, Sean McGorty, took the 3rd spot with a good kick!
Times aren't even worth mentioning, but for history's sake, Klecker clocked  (Sic!) 28:28.71 to Fisher's 28:28.81, and McGorty's 28:29.57!

The Women's race also began slowly--15:50.43 at 5000--but then Alicia Monson took charge!
After a series of mid to high 70's laps, Monson whipped it down to 71.6!
Only Karissa Schweizer went with her!
(Elise Cranny--she of 30:14 fame--dropped from the entry list a few days before the race!!)
Lap after lap they went, hitting 71's and the occasional 72, all the way until 800 to go!
Someone had to move!
It was Monson, who nailed a 68.
But Schweizer didn't fall apart!
Then the next lap was 64, but Monson first had to stop a Schweizer charge on the inside!
So Karissa went outside, passed her, and that was that!!
Her 30:49.56 included a last 5000 of about 14:58.9!!
Monson's 30:51.09 was ended with a 15:00!!
Schweizer gets the USATF Meet Record, while Monson is now ranked 7th A-T US!

The fight for 3rd was fierce also!
Emily Infeld and Natosha Rogers sprinted like mad down the final 100, with Rogers JUST getting Infeld at the tape--31:29.80 to 31:30.04!!
Weini Kelati, who had been up front for the first half, faded to 5th, time of 31:39.90!

Some good Combined Event totals for Monson!
Her 14:42.56 and 30:51.09 adds to 45:33.65!
This makes her 6th A-T US!
Add her 3000 of 8:40.08 to that C-E total, and you have her 54:13.73 making her 5th A-T US!

To save even more space on my Pre report, I'll close with a few assorted marks from elsewhere---
Tori Franklin TJ'ed 47-0.75 in a meet in Greece!
Daniel Stahl went to Iceland (!!) to have his Discus go 227-3!
Great Britain's Jessie Knight had a good 400H time of 54.09 in Belgium!

And in the California State HS meet, there was a good Girls 1600!!
You know my thoughts on that distance, but this was a quality race!
Sadie Englehardt won it in 4:36.67!
Dalia Frias stayed close, running 4:37.09 for 2nd.
And in 3rd came the 4:37.37 by Sam McDonnell!!
(I'll assume that "Sam" is short for Samantha!!)

The Prefontaine Classic post is coming soon!!

Prefontaine Classic Preview

 This is it, my friends!
It's serious from this point forward!
Named after a man who redefined the words "tough" & "charisma", the 2022 Prefontaine Classic is just hours away!
A brief Guide to this Preview---
The events are listed in order of the (updated) schedule!
I give the Meet Record, and name a few athletes to key on.
This is NOT a Predictions Preview!
The 10000's are part of the USATF Championships, and while on the Pre Classic event schedule, are SEPARATE FROM this meet, as far as Meet Records go!
I'm doing this Preview based on the latest information available about who's in and who's not!
Lots of "discussion" has been ongoing on the T&FN Message Board about Athing Mu, Lamont Jacobs, Elise Cranny, and other late withdrawals from the meet!
But as you'll soon see, this is still one of the greatest & deepest fields of elite athletes ever assembled!
Three Field events have been moved to tonight's schedule, due to forecasts of weather bad for these events on Saturday!
So without further ado---!

FRIDAY, May 27th
Pole Vault--MEN (Meet Record is 19-10.25)
Mondo Duplantis is here!
The MR is in mortal danger!
Only Chris Nilsen is a credible threat, should Mondo be a bit "off".
Watch also for the Lavillenie brothers, Renaud & Valentin!
KC Lightfoot is also entered.

High Jump--WOMEN  (6-8)
As at the World INdoors, Yaroslava Muhuchukh should be the most watched & the most loved--and for the same reason--She's from Ukraine!!
Plus, she's a viable MR challenger!
Yuliya Levchenko and Nicole Olyslager (nee McDermott) are ones to watch!
Vashti Cunningham will give the home crowd someone to cheer for!

10000--WOMEN (USATF MR is 30:59.97)
Elise Cranny is not here, saying she's not ready!
That leaves her BTC teammate Karissa Schweizer to break the tape first, assuming SHE's ready!!
I think she is!
As are Alicia Monson, Weini Kelati, Emily Infeld, and Natasha Rogers!
Marielle Hall and Ednah Kurgat are others to watch.
This will be Stephanie Bruce's last USATF Championship race (unless she's also in the 5000!).

10000--MEN (USATF MR is 27:39.4 from 1979!  NOTE: I have separate MR's for the Olympic Trials!  So the OLY Trials MR of 27:25.33 is for THAT meet, not the annual USATF Champs!!)
Grant Fisher!
If he's in 12:53 & 26:33 shape, he'll not only win this race, but dictate how it plays out!
Offering SOME threat are Joe Klecker, Will Kincaid, Lopez Lomong, Ben True, Sean McGorty, Emmanuel Bor, and Shadrack Kipchirchir!
The MR should go down!!

Discus Throw--WOMEN  (227-5)
In their recent duel, Valarie Allman's 222 beat Sandra Perkovic's 220!
So the MR will insist they do better here!
I'm sure they will!
If they're both ON, watch for the 230 line to be crossed--maybe a few times!
One of the greatest clashes of this meet, and maybe of 2022!!
Kristin Pudenz and Liliana Ca are others to watch.

Two Mile--WOMEN  (9:06.74---NOTE--I ignore all marks by Francine Niyonsaba, so this MR is the one my Record Book and blog recognizes!!)
Not the greatest field, but good enough to create several revisions to my Top 24 A-T Performers lists!!
Konstanze Klosterhalfen could get the MR!
Beatrice Chebet will challenge!
Top Americans include Dani Jones, Helen Schlactenhaufen, Elly Henes, Whittni Orton Morgan, Ella Donaghu, Anna Camp Bennett, Eleanor Fulton, and Taryn Rawlings!
They need 9:24.89 to make the World list, and just 9:54.51 to make the US list!!
KK is currently 13th A-T World!
None of the Americans here are on that list, and neither are any of them on the US list!!
Can all 8 make it there tonight??

5000--WOMEN  (14:19.76)
Letesenbet Gidey has said she'll chase the WORLD Record here--weather permitting!
I put little credence in WR promises, wavelights, pacers, and "new shooz" notwithstanding!
But Gidey is serious shit!
She has THREE WR's, including the 5K!
And she will have some credible challengers--Fantu Worku, Caroline Kipkurui, Ejgeyehu Taye, Winnie Chebet, and Lemlem Hailu!
Is Rebecca Mehra there to rabbit, or to race?

5000--MEN  (12:56.98)
Reprint what I said about Gidey, but change the name to Joshua Cheptegei!
Yep, another WR attempt, he says!
While Hassan Mead, Zouhair Talbi, and Mason Ferlic are mainly lane fillers, watch to see what Ed Cheserek does!!
Will he stay with Cheptegei past halfway??

SATURDAY, May 28th
1500--MEN  (3:32.72)
This is the "B" race, or whatever it's called!
It has some top tier names--Neil Gourley, Sam Tanner, Marc Scott, Sam Prakel, Colby Alexander--and Hobbs Kessler!!

Long Jump--WOMEN  (23-11.75)
Is Ivana Vuleta (formerly Spanovic) ready to rip one?
What has Tara Davis been doing, aside from getting married, that is??
Esa Brume and Lorraine Ugen will make those ladies nervous!!

400H--MEN  (47.16)
Let's face it---we all wish Karsten Warholm and Rai Benjamin were here!
They're not--though Benjamin HAD been entered!
That said, Alison Dos Santos ain't a dead fish!
His 46.72 PR will threaten the MR--even in a solo run!
Yasmani Copello, Jaheel Hyde, and Quincy Hall will fill some lanes.

5000--MEN  (12:56.98)
Assuming the MR has already been smashed to 1000 pieces last night, the "new" MR will survive!!
But this field is good!
In fact, aside from Cheptegei, it's deeper than Friday's version!!
We have Berihu Aregawi, Selemon Barega, Jacob Kiplimo, Getnet Wale, Sam Tefera, Mo Ahmed, and Paul Chelimo, who is always "interesting"!

100--WOMEN  (10.54)
Whether the MR goes will be dependent on the wind reading, and whether the LOADED field is even thinking about times!!
Listen, friends!!
We have Elaine Thompson-Herah!
We have Dina Asher-Smith!
And Marie Josee Ta Lou, INdoor 60 World Champion Mujinga Kambundji, Shericka Jackson, Twanisha Terry, Teahna Daniels, and the youngster Brianna Williams!
Oh golly, I forgot!
We have someone who just survived an "abusive" lesbian relationship with Janeek Brown, and lived to kiss & tell about it to the 4 corners--and beyond!
Yes, the unclassifiable Sha'Carri Richardson!!
Put 9-1-1 on speed dial!!

100H--WOMEN  (12.24)
I'm not so sure this MR will last another year!
JCQ--aka Jasmine Camacho-Quinn is here, she of 12.26 fame!
Not to mention the WR holder, Kendra Harrison!
Then there's Nia Ali, Danielle Williams, Tobi Amusan, Anna Cockrell, and the late addition, Tonea Marshall!

1500--WOMEN  (3:53.23)
The MR has an "iffy" chance to fall, but even more fun will be watching Laura Muir and Faith Kipyegon go head to head!
Gudaf Tsegay, the INdoor WR holder, will give serious challenge, as might Jessica Hull!
Gabby DeBues-Stafford can't be denied, nor can Frewayni Hailu!
Then there's the Americans--Elle Purrier St Pierre, Sinclaire Johnson, Shannon Osika, and Josette Norris!
Only EPSP and Norris, among the Americans, have gone sub-4 OUTdoors!!

400--MEN  (43.92)
Will Michael Cherry finally go sub-44??
(And break the MR in the process??)
Michael Norman, Vernon Norwood, and Kirani James are in the race also!
Is Norman ready to BE Michael Norman??

Shot Put--MEN  (75-11.50)
Ryan Crouser has been somewhat "off" of late, despite having thrown in the 73's!
And remember his shocking loss to Darlan Romani INdoors!
But ALSO remember his gigantic World Record, and his steady put-put-put output (Sic!) of throws in the 74's, 75's, and his massive WR!!
He'll have Tom Walsh, Joe Kovacs, and Darrell Hill shadowing him!

800--WOMEN  (1:55.04)
Note the MR, then note that the holder of that mark AIN'T here!!!
(Read the T&FN MB thread about her withdrawal--it's, um, fascinating!  Let's Run's MB should be jealous!)
Whatever--the Brit Babes (My given moniker!) are here--Keely Hodgkinson and Jemma Reekie!
In Athing Mu's absence, Hodgkinson might feel she has something to prove--that she doesn't need Mu in the field to run FAST!!
Then there are Natoya Goule, Halimah Nakaayi, Raevyn Rogers!
We also have the Wilson's--the unrelated Allie and Ajee!
Remember that Allie recently exploded to a 1:58.18 PR!

3000SC--WOMEN  (8:53.65)
America's Dynamic Duo are here!
Will Emma Coburn and Courtney Frerichs go after the latter's American Record of 8:57.77??
Can they stay with Norah Tanui (Jeruto), Celiphine Chespol, Winfred Yavi, and Peruth Chemutai??
Even if it rains, what Steepler is afraid of getting wet??
LOL

200--WOMEN  (21.77)
I've been waiting for years for SAFP (Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce) to run REALLY fast over half a lap!
I know, she's run 21.79, but I'm talking F-A-S-T!!!
As in, well under this MR!!
Mujinga Kambundji is entered here also, but will she have enough left after the 100 to give serious challenge??
Brittany Brown, Jenna Prandini, Tamara Clark, and the youngster Shawnti Jackson are also in the field!

Bowerman Mile--MEN  (3:47.24)
Jakob Ingebrigtsen looked cool and calm at the press conference this morning!
He may just hang on to a solid pace, then whip through a final 200 that will take down the already super sensational Meet Record that HE set last August!!
Ollie Hoare, Abel Kipsang (Watch him closely!), Tim Cheruiyot, Cooper Teare, and Cole Hocker will try to hang with him--without damaging their own race!
Then there's the HS wonder, Colin Sahlman!
Can he come close to Alan Webb's 2001 HSR??
Or even just go sub-4...again??

100--MEN  (9.80)
This Historic Invitational (I generally ignore its Diamond League connection!) end with the Men's Century!
Despite--or maybe because of--Lamont Jacobs's withdrawal, the race could be a blazer!
Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek, Noah Lyles, and Trayvon Bromell will be fighting for American pride and the flag and all that!
But Canadian Andre De Grasse won't be left in the blocks---we hope!
And what about Erriyon Knighton, who has that unbelievable 19.49 to his credit--but who has yet to go sub-10??
Assuming he gets THAT, how far under does he go?
9.7, 9.8?
Pray for a legal wind reading!!

Have a great time, and thank you for using this Preview as your handy guide!!

See you soon!

Great Marks, But DL Suffers

The Birmingham Diamond League was slated to be the highlight of the past weekend.
It wasn't.
Instead, the best marks came from scattered venues around the globe, and to be honest, it was a few High School marks that saved the day!

Juliette Whittaker and Cade Flatt became the second fastest 800 runners in HS history, running times that put them among the best in the World, or at least among the best in the United States!
Flatt's 1:46.51 was run during the Track Night meet in New York City!
So was Whittaker's 1:59.80!
Flatt is now 2nd A-T HS, behind only Michael Granville's HSR from 1996!!
Whittaker is behind only Mary Cain's HSR from 2013!
But Whittaker WON her race--against Professionals!--while Cain finished in 5th or so!
Flatt also didn't win his race, ending 4th!
For me, that makes Whittaker's the better performance!
BTW, Festus Lagat ran 1:45.02--a PR--to win the Men's 800!
Whittaker gets the Senior Class Record.
She beat Olivia Baker's first sub-2, as Baker ended 2nd in 1:59.90!
Brianna Detra took 3rd in 1:59.94!
In 4th came another HS'er, Sophia Gorriaran, who ran 2:00.65, making her 4th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Other good Track Night marks--
Marielle Hall took the 5000 in 15:29.80.
In 10th was HS'er Jenna Mulhern's 16:18.00, not a PR.
Also, Ellie Shea ended just 2nd, but her 4:16.04 in the 1500 makes her 11th A-T HS!

Bad weather haunted the Birmingham DL!
But Keely Hodgkinson still won the 800 in a good 1:58.63 in her OUTdoor rust-buster!
It's the Meet Record!
Renelle Lamote was 2nd in 1:59.53!
Laura Muir beat Jessica Hull in the 1500, 4:02.81 to 4:03.42!
A quick 5000 saw Dawit Seyaum emerge victorious, time of 14:47.55.
Hawi Feysa was 2nd in 14:48.94.
Fantu Worku took 3rd in 14:49.64!
Karoline Grovdal (14:51.38), Hanna Klein (14:51.71), and Jessica Judd (14:57.19) all ran PR's!

Dina Asher-Smith took the 100 in 11.11.
Hansle Parchment got the World Leader with his 13.09 in the 110H!
Trayvon Bromell blatantly false started in the 100!
Abel Kipsang won the 1500 in 3:35.15, while Marco Arop won the 800 in 1:45.41.
Canada took the 4 X 100 Relay in a good 38.31.
Great Britain took the Women's race in 42.29!
Delilah Muhammad won the 400H in a slow 54.54!

Valarie Allman fought off a strong final effort by Sandra Perkovic in the DT, winning with 222-7 over Perky's 220-8!
Malaika Mihambo broke her own Meet Record with her LJ of 23-3.25!
And Sandi Morris won the PV with 15-6.25!
Tied for 2nd with 15-3's were Kat Stefanidi and Tina Sutej!

But the highlight of the meet has to be Kristjan Ceh's Discus Throw of 233-10!!
It's the Meet record, the Age 23 Record, and breaks his own National Record of Slovenia!
It ranks him 10th A-T World!!

The Tucson Elite & USATF Throws meets produced some good marks---
Kara Winger had JT's of 207-5 and 209-2!
Sam Mattis got a DT PR of 225-4, making him 16th A-T US!
Andrew Evans was a strong 2nd with 218-11.
Tom Walsh won the SP with 70-10.50!
Chris Nilsen took the PV by clearing 19-0.25!

David Carreon won the JT with 268-1, which gave him Mexico's National Record!
Zach Holland threw 262-5 in 2nd, nabbing him the Junior College Record!
Tim Glover won another JT with a comebacking 271-8.
Rudy Winkler won the Hammer Throw with 257-7!
A solid Women's SP saw Danielle Thomas-Dodd winning with 64-1.
In 2nd was Sarah Mitton's 63-10.50, which got her Canada's NR!!
Jessica Ramsey was close in 3rd with her 63-7!

Annette Echikunwoke won the HT with 241-8!
Sarah Mitton won the other SP with 62-7.75!
Dan Haugh took one of the HT's with 255-1.
In 3rd was Morgan Shigo's 249-8, which makes him 16th A-T US!
And Janee Kassanavoid keeps improving!
Her latest HT of 255-11 makes her 3rd A-T US, and 6th A-T World!!
She beat the 255-1 by Brooke Andersen!

The USATF Distance Classic--formerly the Oxy meet--had some good runs.
Sinclaire Johnson's 2:01.06 edged the 2:01.20 of Anna Camp Bennett!
Canada's Amy Cashin won the 3000SC in 9:31.28 over Katie Rainsberger's 9:33.23!
Another Canadian--John Gay--took the Men's SC in 8:24.27, with Mason Ferlic 2nd in 8:25.41.
Abby Caldwell won the 1500 in 4:04.18!
She's from Australia!
Neal Gourley (3:35.43) and Sam Tanner (3:35.61) beat the 3:36.24 by Cole Hocker!!
Allie Buchalski won the 5000 in 15:18.60!
Colin Sahlman finished just 9th in the 800, but his 1:48.80  was a solid HS time!
In the Women's 1500, Alma Cortes's 4:06.06 got her the National Record of Mexico!

At Florida's ATL meet, Sha'Carri Richardson made her much-anticipated return, after a series of controversial incidents in her lesbian relationship with Jamaican 100H'er Janeek Brown were made VERY public!!
She ran 11.37.
Not quite headline making as an athletic feat!
But then she was given another chance!
With the race direction reversed, she narrowly won in 11.27, ending the race in some sort of hand & arm signal, probably saying "Take that, Bitches!" to the millions of people who were declaring her finished!!
Ths Saga continues!

Oh yeah, Brittany Anderson won the 100H in 12.59!

Before I move on to other marks from the weekend, I need to report that Sadie Englehardt's 1500 time enroute to her Arcadia Mile was 4:15.56!
It's the Frosh Class Record (by two seconds!!), and ranks her 10th A-T HS!!

Here's the rest of the weekend's marks---
In Italy, Lamont Jacobs took the 100 in 10.04, but injured his glutes, which will take him out of the Prefontaine Classic 100!!
Thea LaFond TJ'ed 47-8!
And Marileidy Paulino won the 200 in 22.59, breaking her own National Record of the Dominican Republic!
Another meet in Italy saw Andy Diaz TJ 57-10.50!
Addisu Yehuna won the 5000 in 13:02.10!
And while Leni Ratzius's PV of 14-10 wasn't quite World Class, it did get her Norway's National Record!

In Spain, Ms Paulino ran the World Leading 400 of 49.49!
Darlan Romani won the SP with his 71-2.50!
And Lazaro Martinez won the TJ with 56-9.25!
Chase Ealey used a German meet to PR (OUTdoors!) in the SP, her 64-10 making her 6th A-T US!
She beat the 62-7.75 by Auriol Dongmo!!
Ealey's series included a mark of 64-7.75!

I'll close with a few HS marks!
Will Sumner ran an 800 in 1:49.34!
But it was the Men's 100 which saw a duel of sorts--even though they came in separate meets!
Roderick Pleasant first timed 10.14, making him 9th A-T HS, tied with 2 others!
Then T'Mars McCallum (Interesting name!!) ran 10.13, making him 7th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!

I can't 100% promise, but I'm thinking of doing a preview of the Prefontaine Classic, which has line-ups in every event that are mind-boggling, despite a series of recent withdrawals, including such as Athing Mu!!
The meet happens this Friday and Saturday, and includes the WC Trials 10000's for US Men & Women in its Friday night program!

See you soon!

And Everything Else

So there I was, with 16 pages of material, wanting to put it ALL into ONE humongous post!
Then I chose to be NICE to you, and cut the pile in half!
So you got (a few hours ago) my report on the Collegiate Conferences!
And now you'll get, well, everything else!

First, a correction and an addition--
I said recently that Allie Wilson's 1:58.18 ws her 1st sub-2--it wasn't!
She ran 1:59.02 in 2021!
Also, in my last post, I reported about Nathaniel Ezekiel's 48.42 in the Big 12 400H.
I left out that it's Nigeria's National Record!

A strong wind blast carried the Javelins at Doha's Diamond League meet--far enough for Anderson Peters that his 305-4 breaks his own National Record of Grenada!
It rates him 5th A-T World!
Jakub Vadlejch was a quality 2nd, his 298-2 getting him the Age 31 Record!
He ranks 16th A-T World!
Cut OFF my World list is Tom Petranoff, his 292-6 dating from 1991.

Alison Dos Santos ran the 400H in 47.24, getting the Meet Record at Doha.
Rai Benjamin was 2nd in 47.49.
Speaking of winds, Noah Lyles had a 2.1 assist him in running the 200 in 19.72, beating Fred Kerley's 19.75!
The weather was pretty bad there, so they moved the Men's Pole Vault INdoors!
Mondo Duplantis won easily, going over 19-9!
It doesn't improve on his INdoor best, and only counts as Doha's INdoor PV Meet Record!

Gabby Thomas's 21.98 over half a lap was wind legal!
It tied Doha's MR!
She beat the 22.07 by Shericka Jackson!
Marileidy Paulino upset Shaunae Miller-Uibo in the 400, 51.20 to 51.84, with SMU's time putting her 3rd!
The Americans swept the Women's SP, with Chase Ealey winning with 64-0.25, beating Maggie Ewen
(63-4.75) and Jessica Ramsey (62-2.75)!
While a nameless testosterone loaded woman finished first, the winner of the 3000 was Faith Kipyegon, her 8:38.05 beating Jessica Hull's 8:40.97!

Other Doha marks---
Soufiane El Bakkali won the 3000SC by 0.01 seconds, his 8:09.66 nipping the 8:09.67 by Lemecha Girma!
Sang Woo took the HJ with 7-7.75, beating Home Nation favorite Mutaz Barshim, who cleared 7-6.50!
Abel Kipsang's 3:35.70 beat Tim Cheruiyot's 3:36.70 in the 1500!

Ponce, Puerto Rico was host to ATL's latest edition!
And it was a goodie!
(I keep Meet records for the ATL under one umbrella, meaning they're for ALL the ATL meets, wherever they are!)
One such MR came in the 300, where Steven Gardiner's 31.52 also breaks his own National Record of the Bahamas!
Vernon Norwood's 31.81 took 2nd, while 3rd was Nathon Allen's 32.04!
Trayvon Bromell won the 100 in the MR time of 9.92!

Other ATL Meet Records---
Elaine Thompson-Herah won the 100 in 10.93, despite a headwind of 0.7!!
Athing Mu's 50.42 over 400 meters was also an MR!
As was Adele Tracey's 1500 winner of 4:05.96!
She beat Allie Wilson's PR of 4:06.37!
Donald Scott's MR contribution was his TJ of 55-4.75!
Hansle Parchment fought a breeze of 0.2 to take the 110H in 13.15!
Janieve Russell toured one lap with hurdles in 54.09, yet another Meet Record!

Two other MR's in Puerto Rico deserve larger mention!
Ryan Crouser's SP smashed the ground at 74-7.75!
Besides the MR, he also gets the Age 29 Record!
And Alaysha Johnson caused a rumble in the crowd when she shocked by defeating the P.R. WonderGirl, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, in the 100H, 12.50 to 12.52!
For Johnson, it makes her 18th A-T US, tied with 1 other!

No records, but in other ATL events---
Kirani James's 44.70 took the 400!
Clay Murphy ran 1:45.54 to take the 800!
And Sandi Morris needed a jump-off to win the PV, her 15-5.75 clearance beating the 15-1.75 of Kat Stefanidi!

Great Britain held their super popular Night of the 10000 PB's (something I wish the US would emulate--maybe at Stanford!).
Jessica Judd won the Women's main race, her 31:22.24 beating Amy Eloise-Markovic's 31:25.57.
The Men's race went to Yemaneberhan Crippa's 27:16.18!
In the Mile races, Matt Stonier's 3:54.89 beat Piers Copeland's 3:54.91, while Georgia Griffith won the Women's race in 4:27.81.

In Ireland, Irish woman Louise Shanahan ran her initial sub-2 in the 800, her 1:59.42 also getting her the National Reord!
She beat Ciara Mageaan, the former record holder, who ran 1:59.86!
Two for the price of one!
In Germany, Habitam Alemu claimed Ethiopia's NR in the 1000, her time being 2:34.11.
Adrianna Sulek scored 6290 points to win a Heptathlon in Germany!
Shimane Moula's 1:44.72 won an 800 in France.
And Milt Tentoglou got a World Leader in the LJ in Greece--27-5.25!

A 10K Road Walk in Madrid saw two Americans take part.
Nick Christie finished 33rd in 43:40, way behind winner Persius Karlstrom, who strolled home in 38:42!!
Robyn Stevens did a lot better, her 46:37 putting her 14th, behind 20K WR holder Shenjie Qieyang's 43:07.
Stevens said this was a training session for her, as she readies for a 20K on May 28th!
Also, the course was a bit hilly, and it was warmish!

The remainder of this post is all about the High Schoolers!
And none performed better than Gary Martin, whose 3:57.98 for the full Mile was the fastest ever in a HS-only race!!
Jim Ryun's 3:58.3 in 1965 was the previous fastest!
It makes him 3rd A-T HS!!

Natalie Cook had a good double, the only problem being it was in the 1600 and 3200!!!
But her times are worth reporting--9:48.25 at the 3200, and 4:40.29 over half the distance!
Too bad they don't qualify for anybody's lists!!

Molly Haywood PV'ed 14-3, making her 10th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
In 2nd was the 14-0 by Skyler Schuller!
It made her 17th A-T HS, tied with a whopping 9 others!!
Jace Posey is the latest HJ find, his 7-4.25 making him 14th A-T HS, tied with 4 others!
Micah Larry could be the find of the year in the LJ, as his 25-11.50 makes him 15th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!

Rheinhardt Harrison ran another quick 800, his latest being 1:48.62!
Will Sumner showed his speed by timing 45.78 in a 400!
Julian Franjieh ran the rare (for HS'ers!) 3000SC, his 9:08.46 making him 21st A-T HS!

A trio of HS sprints need highlighting--
Micayah Holland's 11.26 misses my HS list by just 0.01 seconds!
She also had a 200 of 23.13.
Pierre Goree sped a 100 in 10.22, making him 22nd A-T HS, tied with 2 others!
And Rodrick Pleasant had a pleasant day, his 20.40 making him 16th A-T HS!
But removed FROM my HS list was Quincy Watts, whose 20.50 dated from 1987!!

See you soonish with more Records & Marks & such!

Sprints Dominate Conferences

The Collegiate Conference scene is normally dominated by the SEC!
And while that Conference did produce a large number of top marks, and even a Collegiate Record, there were great marks spread across other Conferences, particularly the Big 10, Big 12, and the ACC!

The best race, both for marks and for competitiveness, was the Women's 4 X 400 Relay at the SEC!
It was left to some amazing individual stars from various short events to decide the placings.
Kentucky's Abby Steiner took care of the 3rd lap in just 48.78 seconds, then handed off to Alexis Holmes, whose 49.60 was enough for her team to hold off Texas A&M, and get the Collegiate Record.
Their time was 3:21.93, which is a time that even a USA National team would be happy with!!
It's also a Meet Record, of course!
A&M had Laila Owens run 49.52 on 3rd leg, then passing to Charokee Young!
She split 48.90, bringing her team in at 3:22.01, making them 2nd A-T School!
Arkansas got a fantastic 48.60 from Britton Wilson, and that served as the fastest split of the day!!
Their 3:22.55 makes them 3rd A-T School!
South Carolina was 4th in 3:25.45, making them 9th A-T School!
Florida got an anchor of 49.84 from Talitha Diggs, timing 3:26.85 in 5th!!

Britton Wilson, in particular, had a great series of times--besides her relay split!
She beat Charokee Young in the open 400, 50.05 to 50.45!
That time makes her 6th A-T Collegiate!
Holmes was 3rd in 50.74.
She also ran the 400H, which was supposedly her specialty!
She took her heat in a PR of 54.23!
Then she took that down to 53.75 in the final, making her 6th A-T Collegiate!
She's also 17th A-T US, and misses the Soph Class Record by just 0.01 seconds!!
Anna Hall was 2nd in 55.36, but had run 54.91 in her heat!!
This makes the star Heptathlete faster at 400H than JJK ever ran (55.05)!
What that says about her future in the Hept is something to ponder!

The Showdown was exciting, but both short sprints went to Favour Ofili over Abby Steiner!
They made the SEC the place to be for Sprint Wars!
Neither PR'd, but they were close!
Ofili's 22.04 edged Steiner's 22.07 in the 200, with Ofili nabbing the Meet Record!
No MR, but Ofili's 10.93 (INTO a wind of 0.7!) beat Steiner's 11.02 in the Century!

The Big 12 gave the SEC a real battle for supremacy in the short stuff, with St Lucia's Julien Alfred leading the way!
Her 10.80 took the final, but it was wind-aided (2.4)!
But she'd run 10.81 in her heat...with a legal breeze!!
It's the MR, and the Soph Class Record, and breaks her own National Record!
She ranks 3rd A-T Collegiate!
However, she took just 4th in the 200 final, time of 22.64.
She ran 22.46 in her heat, and that also breaks her own NR of St Lucia!

With a max legal wind of 2.0, Kynnedy Flannel won that 200 in a solid 22.23!
It's the Big 12 Meet Record, and ranks her 14th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Kevona Davis stayed close, her 22.26 making her 18th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Davis had ended 2nd in the 100 final with a windy 10.83!
But her 10.95 heat time makes her 11th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!

Another speedy race was the 100H at the Big 12!
A pair of Jamaicans fought to the wire, with Demisha Roswell winning over Ackera Nugent!
Roswell's 12.44 is the MR, and ranks her 4th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Nugent's 12.45 ranks her 6th A-T Collegiate!
There's some confusion as to her class!
T&FN lists her as a Frosh, but she ran in the 2021 NCAA, so that supposedly makes her a Soph!
I'll dig into it, because IF she's a Frosh, then she'd DESTROY that Class Record!!

Stacey Ann Williams won the Big 12 400 in 50.21, after running her heat in 50.29!
The 50.21 makes her 9th A-T Collegiate!
Kennedy Simon was 2nd in 50.68!

Besides the CR, there were more fast Relays!
Virginia Tech took the Men's 4 X 100 at the ACC in a Meet Record of 38.69!
This ranks them 20th A-T School!
Ohio State got the Big 10 MR with their 39.12 time!
TCU took the Big 12 short relay in 38.50, also the Meet Record!
No MR, and no real surprise, but Baylor won the 4 X 400 Relay in 3:02.73 at the Big 12.

Florida got the SEC Meet Record with their 2:59.44 in the 4 X 400 Relay!
They needed all of it, as Kentucky's 2:59.93 made them 7th A-T School!
Ohio State ran 43.20 to win at the Big 10!
They're ranked 19th A-T School!
Texas took the 4 X 100 at the Big 12, time of 42.35 making them 5th A-T School, and giving them the Meet Record!
Texas Tech's 42.75 in 2nd makes them 10th A-T School!
Baylor's 3:26.92 in the longer Relay is also a Big 12 Meet Record, and ranks them 13th A-T School!
Finally (in the Relays), we have LSU's 42.59 nipping Kentucky's 42.63 to win at the SEC!

Other sprint times of note at the Conferences---
Trey Cunningham's 110H heat time of 13.13 got him the ACC Meet Record!
But his time in the final was 13.16!
A huge surprise came in the Big 10 110H's!
Great Britain's Josh Zeller amazed with his 13.19, which deservedly gave him the MR!
And, I was told, 5th place on the A-T list for GB!!
He ranks 7th A-T Collegiate!!
At the Big 12, Micaiah Harris had a giant wind of 3.8 to help him, but his 19.72 over 200 meters is still worth noting!

Jonathan Jones is going strong this season!
Full demonstration came in the Big 12 one lapper, where he ran 44.43 for the MR!
It breaks his own National Record of Barbados, and ranks him 18th A-T Collegiate!
Another Big 12 Meet Record fell in the 400H, where Nathaniel Ezekiel ran 48.42, ranking him 14th
A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Isaiah Levingston was a good 2nd, time of 48.82.
Randolph Ross's 44.61 took the Big South 400!
In the Lone Star Conference, Ben Azamati had a strong 3.0 wind to push him to the final win in 9.86!
But he also ran 9.96 legal in a heat!

Micah Williams had a good double at the PAC-12!
His 100 time of 9.93 is the MR, and ranks him 8th A-T Collegiate, tied with 7 others!
He won the 200 in 20.05!
Matt Boling claimed a mild upset in the SEC 200, winning over Joseph Fahnbullah, 20.01 to 20.13!
Eric Edwards timed 13.28 over the 110H, making him 17th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!
Champion Allison won the SEC 400 in 44.74, with Elijah Godwin timing 44.81 in 2nd!

Kemba Nelson took the PAC-12 100 in 11.05.
Alia Armstrong used a wind of 2.1 to time 12.46 in the 100H.
And Melissa Jefferson won the Sun Belt Conference 100 in 10.88!
This ranks her 5th A-T Collegiate, and 24th A-T US, tied with 1 other!!
She also won the 200 in 22.48!

There were some decent distance marks also!
Dylan Jacobs got the ACC Meet Record with his 13:23.45 in the 5000!
Ahmed Muhumed's 28:48.69 is another ACC Meet Record!
Patrick Kiprop won the SEC 5000 in the MR time of 13:41.05!

CR holder Eliud Kipsang was upset by Mario Romo in the SEC 1500, 3:36.91 to 3:39.09!!
Olivia Makezich won the ACC 3000SC in 9:45.31.
Lauren Ryan timed 32:56.53 to win the ACC 10000!
However, the big distance news from the ACC came from Katelyn Tuohy, who discovered she can sprint in the 1500!
She and Maudie Skyring were running together at the bell, but Tuohy took care of her in the final lap, her 4:06.84 getting the ACC Meet Record, and ranking her 6th A-T Collegiate!
Skyring ended in 4:09.83, missing the Collegiate list by 0.30 seconds!

Maddy Boreman won the PAC-12 3000SC in 9:42.22.
Abby Nichols nabbed the PAC-12 MR with her 10000 in 32:27.25!
Alessia Zarbo was 2nd in 32:28.57.
Frosh Emily Covert took 3rd in 32:30.82!
Imogen Barrett won the SEC 800 in 2:01.42.
A pair of SEC Meet Records fell in the Women's 5000 and 1500.
Mercy Chelangat showed no mercy (sic!) over the last mile in the 5K, her 15:22.99 winning by nearly 10 seconds over the 15:32.41 by Parker Valby.
Chelangat also won the 10000 in 33:15.66.
Sinteyehu Vissa's time in the 1500 was 4:08.72.
It makes her 14th A-T Collegiate!
Second went to the 4:09.73 by Lauren Gregory!

The field events were led by the Collegiate Record (on his 6th throw!) by Mykolas Alekna in the Discus Throw!
It measured 225-6, and also serves as the PAC-12 Meet Record, the Frosh Class Record, and the Age 19 Record (where he broke his own mark!)!!
In fact, a better mark doesn't come until Age 22!!
Raiford Mullings, a Jamaican Frosh, was 2nd with 208-3!

Ethan Dabbs shocked in the ACC Javelin Throw, with his 272-0 getting the Meet Record, and making him 8th A-T Collegiate, and 17th A-T US!!
Claudio Romero's 217-2 won the ACC Discus Throw!
Sondre Guttormsen won the Heps Pole Vault by topping 18-9.25!
Gabriela Leon won the ACC Pole Vault with her 14-9.
Remember Madison Wiltrout??
She got the HSR in her Soph year with a great 185-8 in the Javelin Throw!
Then she needed surgery, and she fell off that height over the next few years!
She finally PR'ed earlier this season, but not by much!
Until the ACC!!
There, she blew apart her previous best by about 8 feet, her 196-11 being the MR, and ranking her 10th A-T Collegiate, and 11th A-T US!!

Johannes Erm won the SEC Decathlon with 8132 points!
Kristine Blazevica's Heptathlon score at the Big 12 was 6064, making her 24th A-T Collegiate!
Adelaide Aquilla won the Big 10 SP with her 60-6.75!
Kaitlin Heri PV'd 14-3.50, but it was enough for the Mountain West MR!
Camryn Rogers's HT sailed out 241-10 to win the PAC-12!
There's a great article about her on the T&FN website!
Jasmine Moore doubled at the SEC, LJ'ing 22-1, and TJ'ing 46-1.50 legal to win there--and had a windy jump of 47-5.25!
Ana da Silva won the SEC Shot Put with her 60-6.75!
It ranks her 17th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!

Lamara Distin won the SEC High Jump with 6-4.75!
Amanda Fassold won the SEC Pole Vault over the favorite, her 14-9 beating the 14-7.25 by Lisa Gunnarsson!!
It makes Fassold 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
Finally, we have the Big 12 Women's Long Jump!
Monae Nichols won with the World Leader of 22-10.50!
This tied the Big 12 MR, and makes her 3rd A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Ruth Usoro took 2nd with 22-3, making her 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
But it also took OFF the Collegiate list a true icon of the sport!!
Gail Devers, better known as a sprinter and hurdler, was a pretty decent Long Jumper as well!
But her 22-2.50 from 1988 is GONE from my list!!

Be back soon with more from this past weekend!!

Multi Delights & Distance Records

The Eugene faithful will be denied seeing the Decathlon & Heptathlon, and the 10K's when they gather at Hayward Field in June!
USATF decided to have those WC Trials (aka USATF Championships) happen elsewhere, and a month or so prior to the rest of the meet!
But it may bring on questions about distance doubling, and an athlete's ability to do so!
Not so for the Multi's!
You want a Multi's person to have some recovery time before the World's comes to Eugene in July!
Makes sense--Besides, Multi's people don't normally double in an individual event!
That said, the Dec & Hept were incredible!!

Garrett Scantling and Kyle Garland scored a total of 17,587 points, which is the most ever scored in one meet by a pair of American Men!!
Add Zach Ziemek, and you have a trio of Americans scoring 26,160 points, an average of 8720--which just happens to be what Garland scored in 2nd place!!
Garland's 4660 led Scantling's 4503 after Day One!
Ziemek looked good with his 4404 in 3rd!
But Scantling had a strong 2nd day (4364), his final score being 8867!!
Even though the rest of the meet is about 6 weeks away, it's a USATF Meet Record!
It makes him 3rd A-T US, and 7th A-T World!

Garland's 8720 (4060 2nd day) gives him the Age 21 Record!
He also SMASHED the Collegiate Record--BOTH of them!!
Lindon Victor scored 8539 awhile back, but it's considered wind-aided!
The "real" CR was said to be 8528, achieved by Ayden Owens earlier this season!
So Garrett broke both CR's!!
(This blog considered Victor's mark to have been the official CR!!)
Garland also gets the Soph Class Record!
He ranks 8th A-T US and 19th A-T World!
Ziemek's 8573 makes him 12th A-T US!
Steven Bastien scored 8135 in 4th!
His 2nd day was just 3790 points!

It was no contest for Anna Hall!
She got another PR, her 6458 points a runaway winner over Ashtin Mahler's 6184 and Michelle Atherley's 6154!
Erica Bougard was a DNF, and didn't do well in the events she competed in!
Kendell Williams also DNF'ed, but she has a Wild Card admission to the WC's, so she just needed to do one event to ensure the Wild Card!
Bougard can still make the team, unless Mahler and Atherley get the standard!
Confusing?
Yeah, for me too!

Whatever, Hall was great, getting things off to a good start with a 100H PR of 13.21.
She was ahead most of the way, and just increased her margin with every event!
(Her 1st 4 events gave her 3781 points, the last 3 scoring 2677!)
Then came the 800!!
She ran her 1st 400 in a stunning 57.85!!
Yes, she faded to 65.37, but her time of 2:03.11 was the fastest ever in a Hept by an American Woman!!
I believe that with 800-specific training, she can break two minutes!!
BTW, the scoring tables in T&FN's Big Gold Book go only to 2:01.12, for which you score 1099 points!
Maybe they need to expand those tables!!
LOL

The Track Meet was a pretty fine---uh, track meet!
Held on a local HS track in San Juan Capistrano, it saw some great distance times run!
Including the Collegiate Record of 13:06.32 by Abdi Nur!!
He broke the old record---and I do mean OLD!--of 13:08.4 by the infamous Henry Rono, run in 1978!!
But he didn't win!
That honor went to the visiting Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who cruised to a 13:02.03!
His last 400 was 54.63!!
Mohamed Mohumed (correct spelling!) ran 13:03.18 in 2nd!
He's from Germany!
Joe Klecker's 13:04.42 makes him 16th A-T US!
Then came Nur's CR in 4th!
It's also the Junior Class Record, and ranks him 18th A-T US!
Rono's time was run in his Soph year!

Nico Young took 5th in 13:11.30!
This makes him 3rd A-T Collegiate!
In a different race, Lex Young (Nico's younger brother!) of Newbury Park HS, got the Junior Class Record with his 13:43.95!
It ranks him 2nd A-T HS, just edging the iconic Gerry Lindgren's 13:44.0 from 1964!!
Way back in the same race came Tyrone Gorze, another HS'er, in 14:00.34!
This makes him 11th A-T HS!

Other Track Meet results---
Festus Lagat had the fastest 1500 time--3:37.75--but it was Colin Sahlman who made the headlines!
His 3:39.59 makes him 4th A-T HS!
Allie Wilson shocked all with her 800 time of 1:58.18, her first sub-2!!
It makes her 23rd A-T US!
Nia Akins took 2nd in 1:58.82, also her initial sub-2!
Canada's Lindsey Butterworth was 3rd in 1:59.59, while Cory McGee was close in 1:59.78!
Gabby DeBues Stafford's 4:03.20 defeated Sinclaire Johnson's PR of 4:03.33 in the 1500!
In another race, Laura Galvan won in 4:07.06, getting the National Record of Mexico!

Natosha Rogers took the 5000 in 15:05.22 over the PR by Taryn Rawlings, her time being 15:05.94!
And Weini Kelati also PR'ed, her 10K winner being 31:11.11!
This makes her 13th A-T US!
Sharon Lokedi timed 31:14.41 in 2nd!

The USATF Half Marathon saw Emily Sisson finally get the AR, as she timed 67:11.
Her initial tries sought to beat the old AR by Molly Huddle---who gave birth to Josephine, her first child, a few days ago!!
But then Sara Hall succeeded, running 67:15!
Sisson handily took care of THAT one!!
She led from the gun, winning by around 6 minutes!
Len Korir nipped Futsam Zienasellassie, 62:35 to 62:36, to win the Men's race!
The race was held in Indianapolis!

The Keino Classic in altitude happy Nairobi was, well, classic!!
Ferdinand Omanyala sprinted his 100 in 9.85, beating the 9.92 by Fred Kerley!
This makes Omanyala 20th A-T World, tied with 3 others!
It also takes OFF several names from my World list, all of whom had times of 9.86!
Among them were Noah Lyles (from 2019), Ato Boldon (1999), Frankie Fredericks (1996), and (drum roll, please!) Carl Lewis, from 1981!!

Considering the altitude, the distance times were pretty sweet!
Abel Kipsang's 3:31.01 in the 1500 shocked!
Diribe Welteji's 4:01.50 World Leader was great also!
As was Norah Tanui's World Leading 3000SC time of 9:04.95!
She's now "from" Kazakhstan, and it's their National Record!
South Africa's Prudence Sekgodina took the 800 in 1:58.41!
Girmawit Gebrzihair ran her 5000 in a quick 14:49.97!
And Jacob Krop's 5000 took 13:12.19!

Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce opened her season (!!) with a stunner--a 100 in 10.67 INTO a breeze of 0.4!!
She deservedly gets the Age 35 Record!
Bassant Hemida ended in 2nd, her 11.02 nabbing her Egypt's NR!!

The Hammer Throws were quality also--
Wojciech Nowicki got a World Leader of 267-2!
And Anita Wlodarczyk seems back to normal, her 256-1 getting her the Age 36 Record!
She now owns EIGHT Age Records in the HT--Age 24, then from 29 to 33, and again at Ages 35 & 36!!
In 2nd came Janae Kassanavoid's 252-0!
This makes her 4th A-T US, and 13th A-T World, tied with 1 other!

In an already long post, I'll report all my other marks in two all-purpose groups!
Track
In Arkansas, Britton Wilson won the 400 in 50.97!
She beat Shamier Little's 51.41.
At the Oregon Twilight, Cooper Teare took the 1500 in 3:34.81.
His Combined Events total for the 1500 & 5000 adds to 16:41.54 (this 1500 & his 13:06.73), making him 12th A-T US!
At an ATL meet, Michelle Lee-Ahye's 10.94 100 win gave her the MR!
Morolake Akinosun's 10.98 was 2nd!
In Tokyo, Michael Norman ran the 400 in 44.62, while Rai Benjamin's 48.60 took the lap with hurdles!
Kendra Harrison took the 100H in 12.76!
The US's Jade Barber won a Brazil 100H in 12.78!
Jamaica's Oblique Seville won a Jamaica (Sic!) 100 in 10.00 (-0.4 wind!).
Fighting a wind of -1.8 (!!), Shericka Jackson still timed 11.00 in her 100!
Elaine Thompson-Herah cruised to a 200 of 22.75, her wind being -0.6!

Barcelona's Marathon saw Y Adane's 2:05:53 beat the 2:05:58 by Gebru Redahgne!
Kenneth Renju took the Lisbon Half in 60:13!
In the Women's race, Brigid Kosgei's 66:46 barely lost to the 66:44 by Tsehay Gemechu!
High School Track marks included---
Roisin Willis running a 1600 (UGH!!) in 4:43.61!
Gary Martin winning a 3200 (Ditto!) in 8:41.57!
Justin Braun timing 46.00 over 400 meters!
Rheinhardt Harrison doing an 800 in 1:48.58!
And then we have Chris Caudillo, who doubled in the 1600 & 3200 (double UGH!) in times of 4:03.83 & 8:45.19--in the same day!!

Field
Alina McDonald PV'ed 15-1.50 in Virginia, making her 21st A-T US, tied with 3 others!
Chris Nilsen's PV of 19-8.25 is the World Leader, and ranks him 5th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
Lara Boman sent her Hammer flying 231-11, making her 20th A-T US!
Brian Williams had a DT of 217-0!
Alex Young's HT went 252-8, while Rachel Dincoff's DT measured 210-4!
Tristan James got an ATL Meet Record by LJ'ing just 25-9.50!
Vashti Cunningham needed to HJ just 6-5 for another ATL Meet Record!
In the HS realm, Maddox Hamm's PV of 17-10 (which he did in successive meets!) makes him 19th
A-T HS!
Jack Larraviere had a JT of 228-10, making him 16th A-T HS!
And Brett Schwart's DT measured 210-7!

Then, at the Ratingen Multi's in Germany, Simon Ehammer scored TWO National Records for Switzerland!
His 8354 score for the Decathlon is one, the other being his World Decathlon Best of 27-2.75 in the Long Jump--another Swiss NR!
Not exactly Swiss cheese, eh??!!
(Sorry, but this blogger LOVES Swiss cheese!!)
Sophie Weiserberg won the Heptathlon with her 6273 points!

Big News!!
Sydney McLaughlin might be called Sydney Tevrone now!
She married NFL player Andre Tevrone Jr a few days ago!
But she hasn't said if she'll use a hyphenated name now, or just Tevrone, or will stick to McLaughlin as her Professional moniker!!

Doha opens the Diamond League season this weekend!
And there's a HOT meet in Puerto Rico happening also!
(I was NOT referring to Ponce's weather, though it certainly could be warm there!)

See you soon!

High Schooler Stuns the World

To be fully transparent, while Erriyon Knighton IS still in High School, he turned Professional last year, so his marks are not eligible for HS Records & Lists!
However, my Record Book started a special HS PRO section!
I felt this was needed, so that the kids who turned Pro before graduation--but remained HS'ers!--could be honored!
And his utterly astounding time of 19.49 over half a lap cries out for all the honors and praises thrown his way!!

It happened at the LSU Invitational, where you might expect fast times, but THIS??!!
I saw the video, and he looked so smooth, flowing toward the line at mach speed!
Besides my HS PRO and HS PRO Junior Class Records, he also gets the Age 18 Record!
He ranks 2nd A-T US, and 4th A-T World!
He's faster--at 18!!--than Usain Bolt was at that age, as well as the lifetime bests by Noah Lyles and Justin Gatlin!!

He left a pair of solid guys far back, yet they ran very good times!!
Joseph Fahnbullah's 19.92 was great, but a full 0.43 behind Knighton!
Then, in 3rd, came a dude I'd never heard of--and maybe most of the rest of the world hadn't either.
Dorian Camel's PR coming into 2022 was 20.96!
He ran 20.31 earlier this season, so he WAS coming on fast!
But 20.00??!!
An 0.96 improvement in one year!!
The LSU Junior suddenly ranks 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!

Knighton is now on my 100-200 Combined Events list for the US!
His 10.04 and 19.49 adds to 29.53, making him 6th A-T US!
Cut FROM my World list was one Ato Boldon, whose 19.77 dates from 1997!

Also at LSU, Favour Ofili won the 100 in 10.93, making her 8th A-T Collegiate!
Grant Holloway fought a headwind of 0.4, but ran his 110H in 13.34, winning easily!
Getting a lot of assistance from a 3.0 wind, Favour Ashe sped his 100 in 9.79!
Jenna Prandini's 22.45 beat Julien Alfred's 22.68, but Alfred got the National Record of Saint Lucia!
Kendell Ellis, who had run the 400 leg of the NB team's INdoor WR in the DMR, won here in 51.00 over the same distance!
Alia Armstrong's 12.72 won the 100H over Grace Stark's 12.83!

Jasmine Moore LJ'ed 22-4.50!
Quincy Hall took the 400H in 48.51.
Jonathan Jones won the flat 400 in 44.79!
Tripp Piperi won the SP with his 69-7!
Texas's Women won both Relays!
Their 42.37 in the 4 X 100 ranks them 6th A-T School!
And their 3:25.64 in the 4 X 400 was anchored by Kennedy Simon's 49.89!!

Payton Jordan's meet is always reliable for turning out fast distance times!
This edition was no exception!
Annie Rodenfels got the Meet Record in the 3000SC with her 9:25.48!
It ranks her 14th A-T US!
In 2nd was Elise Thorner's 9:32.42, which makes her 9th A-T Collegiate!

The Men's 10000 went to Dillon Maggard's 27:37.26!
Adriaan Wildschutt was 2nd in 27:38.54, making him 13th A-T Collegiate!
In 3rd came Charles Hicks, his 27:40.16 making him 16th A-T Collegiate!
Cole Sprout ran 27:42.42 in 4th, making him 21st A-T Collegiate!
Run OFF the Collegiate list was a true legend of the sport!!
Henry Rono is GONE, his 27:46.6 dating from 1978!!

Ahmed Jaziri took the 3000SC in 8:24.33, making him 19th A-T Collegiate!
He beat the 8:26.44 by Duncan Hamilton, which ranks him 23rd A-T Collegiate!!
Vanessa Fraser's 15:19.11 won the 5000 over the 15:20.12 by Eleanor Fulton!
Wuge (sp ??) He of China won the women's 10000 in 31:46.51!
Keira D'Amato PR'ed in 2nd with her 31:50.58!

I'm going to gather all my remaining marks into event groups!
Throws
Mykolas Alekna got a dual meet record (Cal vs Stanford) with his DT mark of 222-0!
He also gets the Age 22 Record, and breaks his own Frosh Class Record!!
He ranks 2nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Darlan Romani hit 71-5.25 in the SP in Brazil!
Ashton Riner's JT measure of 198-0 makes her 7th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, as well as 9th A-T US!!

Joe Kovacs is in shape, as seen by his SP of 73-8.25 in Tennessee!
All 6 of his throws were 70 feet or more!
Jessica Ramsey got off a good one, her SP measuring 63-1.50, also in Tennessee!
And Avione Allgood-Whetstone's JT of 195-2 makes her 12th A-T US!
Rachel Dincoff took a Florida DT with 203-7!
Collegiate Logan Blomquist had a HT of 240-1!
In Arizona, Jordan Geist's SP flew 69-0!

Jorinde Van Klinken doubled in Arizona, winning the SP with 60-6.50 (making her 18th A-T Collegiate), and the DT with 212-5!
I'm going to put my HS stuff into a separate group, so let me finish the Throws with a HT by Brooke Andersen!
Her massive 259-3 is the Age 26 Record, and makes her 2nd A-T US, and 4th A-T World!
Far back in 2nd came Sarah Killinen, whose 228-0 makes her 22nd A-T Collegiate!

Sprints
In Maryland, Joseph Amoah sped the 100 in 9.94!
Matt Boling ran his Georgia 100 in 10.05!
Natalliah (sp??) Whyte ran a 100 in 10.97, holding off the 10.99 by Shania Collins!
This was in Florida!
Also in Florida was Trey Cunningham's 13.10 over the 110H!
This is the Senior Class Record!
It makes him 4th A-T Collegiate, and 23rd A-T US!
He ran his heat in 13.15!
Trayvon Bromell had a slight wind (2.1) to help him to a 9.75 Century!

In the Pure Global Invite, several races were hurt by strong winds in the 4 & 5 range!
But a few lucked out!
TeeTee Terry won the 100 in 10.94!
Kyree King's 100 took 9.98 seconds!
Noah Lyles ran the half lap in 19.86!
Also in Florida, but not the same meet, Brittany Anderson fought a wind of 0.3 to run her 100H in 12.68!
Hopefully this is legit, but according to T&FN's eTN, Letsile Tebogo ran a 100 in 9.96 in Botswana!
If it remains good, then it's the Age 18 Record!!
And in Texas, Texas A&M's Women's 4 X 400 squad ran 3:25.92, with Charokee Young anchoring in 49.73!

Jumps
Darius Corbin HJ'ed a solid 7-6.50, but misses my Collegiate list by a half inch!
Thea LaFond got a TJ World Leader with her 47-1!
Morgan Lake--a name NOT in the news of late!--HJ'ed 6-4!
Lamara Distin continues to shine, her 6-5.50 HJ being Jamaica's NR--I think!
I'll check it out!
It makes her 4th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
And that I'm sure of!!
Speaking of SUHR, Jenn went over 14-9 in Texas!

Another PV'er having a great season is Gabriela Leon!
She upped her best to 15-1.50, making her 7th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, and 21st A-T US, also tied with 2 others!
And Olivia Gruver PV'ed 15-5.50 in Fresno to take over the World Lead!

High School (all events)
Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan is keeping busy!
A Shot Put measured 68-8.50!
But in his specialty--the Hammer Throw--his 247-10 makes him 7th A-T HS!!
Another busy guy was Tucker Smith!
He first got a SP of 69-2!
Then he upped that by a wee bit, hitting 72-0.50, making him 14th A-T HS!
Casey Helm leads the DT with his 214-1.
It makes him 18th A-T HS!

The HS Pole Vault stays active!
Tessa Mudd joined the 14 foot club, her 14-0 making her 17th A-T HS, tied with 8 others!!
Kenna Stimmel flew over 14-4, making her 9th A-T HS!

The distances had some goodies, but also a couple of marks that are quite rare in the HS ranks!
Angelina Napoleon leads the 2000SC (Who better than "Napoleon" to lead the way??!!) with her 6:39.71!
Caleb Lakeman, son of a former Duck standout (Dirk), ran a full Mile in 4:04.46, timed at 3:49.08 enroute at 1500!
Natalie Cook is yet another busy bee!
She doubled with times of 4:36.96 and 9:54.66!
Only problem was that these were run over the 1600 and 3200 distances--of no use to me!!
But good times nonetheless!

The Fast Women Newsletter is a godsend for stat freaks like myself, and Women's stats in particular!
In their latest (It's a weekly!), they reported a couple of times that got my wheels greased, vis a vis a certain obsession of mine!
But first, the marks!

Jenna Mulhern, who had run that 16:07.50 in the 5000 reported earlier just two days before, ran a 10 Mile race in 54:15!!
She ended in 2nd, but the winner being a Kenyan who ran 52:04, that's not bad at all!
(More on this in a bit!)
Then Kate Peters actually WON the Eugene Half Marathon, her time being a slick 1:13:22!!

OK, here's my obsession kicking in!
As my steady readers (or those who follow me on Twitter) know, I passionately have been crying out for HS Women to run a 10000 on a track!
Gather all (or most) of the top 25 or so distance women, line them up in a track 10K (Stanford, the NBN, the Brooks PR, Distance Night at the Pre Classic, or....!), and let them loose!
My Top 24 A-T Performers list ends with a 36:19!
Fourth place on that list is 34:36 and change!!

Now, get this!!
Jenna Mulhern probably passed the 10K point in that 10 Miler in about 33:30!!
(Then continued another 3.8 miles at the same pace!!)
Kate Peters probably ran TWO 10K's during her Half--and they were back to back--non-stop!!--in 34:30-ish!!
Remember now that 4th place on my list is 34:36!!
Think these ladies are capable of making my Top 4??

As would be so many others--or at minimum my Top 24!!

I'm PLEADING with race or meet organizers--or anyone who feels the same as me--to PLEASE get these Women together for a mass assault on the All-Time Record Book!!
To make my list, all she would need is to run a pair of 18:10 5K's back to back!
They CAN do it--and then some!!
(It must be run no later than August 31st to be HS eligible, so there's plenty of time to get things together!)

My next post will cover whatever happens the rest of this week!
See you then!

Folks, It's the Penn & Drake Show!

 Thank you, thank you!
And welcome to the Annual Penn & Drake Relays Show!
You'll see the Elites!
The Collegiates!
High Schoolers!
Relay teams galore!

But this year's Emmy goes to (Envelope please!) PENN!!
No contest!

In a thrilling last leg of the 4 X 1500, Katelyn Tuohy and Krissy Gear battled almost to the line, with Arkansas getting the Collegiate Record over North Carolina State, despite Tuohy's 4:09.8 being faster than Gear's 4:10.7!!
Both teams took over a dozen seconds off Tennessee's old mark, dating from 2009!
Arkansas's time was 16:53.87, while NC St ended in 16:55.19!
It's also the Meet Record, obviously!

The Men's University 4 X Mile (Why don't the Women run the 4 X Mile also??) was slower, but exciting!
Texas won in 16:17.45, followed closely by Virginia (16:17.89), Providence (16:17.92), and Georgetown (16:18.04)!
Two more teams ran 16:19.01 or faster!

Both DMR's were good also!
BYU's Women ran 10:50.22 for the win, making them 3rd A-T School!
Mississippi ended in 10:55.81, and are ranked 7th A-T School!
Indiana's 10:59.54 makes them 15th A-T School!
Mississippi also took the Men's race, their 9:29.45 prevailing over the 9:29.79 by Wisconsin!
Mississippi is now 9th A-T School, while the Badgers rank 12th A-T School!
Connecticut's 9:30.31 makes them 13th A-T School!
In 4th came Virginia, their 9:30.69 making them 15th A-T School!
Back in 7th was Miami of Ohio, their 9:33.08 ranking them 20th A-T School!

Mississippi had a great meet, as their Men also won the 4 X 800, time of 7:13.71!

The individual races were great also!
Especially the Women's 600!!
Athing Mu won in 1:22.74!
(I don't have a list for the OUTdoor 600, but Mu is 2nd A-T World & US!)
Natoya Goule took 2nd in 1:24.09, which is the National Record of Jamaica!
Nia Akins was next in 1:25.14!

But then came a shocker!
High School Junior Sophia Gorriaran's spectacular 1:25.22 finished ahead of Ajee Wilson's 1:25.87!
Olivia Baker also beat Wilson, time of 1:25.28!
Imagine these times being run INdoors, where I do have A-T lists!!
Wherever they run, Gorriaran's time is absolutely astounding!!
This puts her on point for a HSR over 800 meters later this season!!
Roisin Willis, you've been warned!!
As for Ajee, her 1:25.87 was NOT a "bad" race, even though she faded over the final 150!
It's just that 5 women ran faster!!

The Men's 600 was good, but paled in comparison to the Women's!
Alex Amankwah won it in 1:15.88 to Rajay Hamilton's 1:16.00!
Kameron Jones's 1:16.47 took 3rd!

The elite Men also had a 4 X Mile!
They'd talked of going sub-16!
But it turned out to be just trash talk, as the opening leg took 2:08-ish for the first 880 yards!!
But the On AC's Joe Klecker and Ollie Hoare salvaged a bit of the rep, their legs being 3:58.25 and 3:55.18, respectively!
Their team won in 16:04.89 over Dublin TC's 16:10.04!
On's time ranked them 8th A-T World!

South Carolina won the Women's 4 X 400, their 3:26.53 prevailing over Ohio State's 3:28.07, the latter ranking them 18th A-T School!
Sydney McLaughlin won the 100H in a decent 12.75!
Sage Hurta dipped under two minutes in the 800, her 1:59.76 being her initial foray into sub-2 territory!
High Schooler Juliette Whittaker ran 2:01.55 in finishing 2nd!
Anavia Battle sped the 300 in 36.70!

Devon Allen sped the 110H in 13.11, beating Omar McLeod's 13.22!
Not bad for a possible Pro footballer!!
Isaac Updike took the 3000SC in 8:22.96!
In the field, Claudio Romero's Discus Throw measured 219-10, making him 5th A-T Collegiate!
He also gets the National Record of Chile!

As noted at the onset, HS'ers also are welcomed to Penn, the most prominent usually being Jamaica's HS's!
However, my records and lists are for US High Schools, not their international brethren!
So, with that in mind, here's a few of the better HS marks from this year's Penn Relays!

Jenna Mulhern ran her 5000 in 16:07.50!
This makes her 12th A-T HS!
Ferenc Kovacs (Don't think he's related to SP'er Joe!!) ran his 5000 in 14:08.24!
This makes him 17th A-T HS!
Gary Martin and Juliette Whittaker took the HS Miles!
Martin ran 4:01.04, while Whittaker's time was 4:41.18!
Angelina Perez's 3000 took her 9:18.11, making her 17th A-T HS!

Finally (from Penn), we have Benjamin Shue!
His Discus Throw of 193-0 is the Frosh Class Record!!

Drake's meet had bad weather, though not majorly bad, just enough to lessen the quality of the marks, but not enough to dampen the enjoyment of the crowd!

Delilah Muhammed led the way with a time of 53.88 over the 400H!
It was a Meet Record!
Also getting an MR was North Carolina A&T Men's 4 X 100 Relay team!
Their time was 38.84!

Randolph Ross got the 400 win, running 44.95!
The 400H winner was Alison Dos Santos's 48.41!
Dan Michalski won the 3000SC in 8:28.93!
Vashti Cunningham HJ'ed 6-2.75!

The Relays (in a Relays meet) were good!
The 4 X 1600's went to Iowa State's Men in 16:23.05, and to Oklahoma State's Women, time of 19:03.37!
Iowa State's Men also took the 4 X 800, time of 7:17.47, while the Women's race went to the 8:25.25 of Kentucky!
Oklahoma State's Women also won their DMR, time of 11:04.65!

Finally, Ryan Crouser is in heavy training, so with the bad throwing weather, his winning SP mark was "only" 70-11.75!

Next post will be VERY soon, and will have an amazing time to report!
Also included will be stuff from the LSU Invitational and the Payton Jordan meet, along with assorted other goodies!

See you soon!

Many Roads to Eugene (a pun of sorts!)

This blog covers all facets of our sport--Track & Field, of course, INdoors & OUTdoors, Men & Women!
But also races run (or WALKED) on various Roads around the World!
And this post is FILLED with goodies from the Roads!

Robyn Stevens got named USATF's Athlete of the Week recently, and for good reason!
Her 35K race in Dudince, Slovakia was near perfection!
The only US Woman there, she began in 11th place, then moved to 4th, and finally ended in 5th (slowed due to a hamstring niggle)!
That's a VERY high placing for an American in an international race!!
Her time of 2:49:29 smashed the American Record of Miranda Melville by close to 11 minutes!!
Shenjie Qieyang won the race in 2:43:06, with Kimberly Garcia 2nd in 2:43:19!
Stevens finished just 17 seconds out of 4th!!
The Men's race went to Massimo Stano, time of 2:29:09!
He beat Jose Doctor's 2:29:24!
Jose Barrondo took the 20K in 1:20:56!

A China 35K went to Hao Xu in 2:31:48, with the Women's winner being Zhenxia Ma's 2:47:38!
A 35K in Japan saw the Men's race going to Masatora Kawano, his 2:26:40 making him 2nd A-T World!
Dasuke Matsunaga ended 2nd in 2:27:09, making him 3rd A-T World!
And Tomoshiro Noda's time of 2:27:18 in 3rd makes him 4th A-T World!
For the Women, Soreno Sonada won in 2:45:48, making her 4th A-T World!!

The World Team Trials 20K was Walked on a track!
Canada's Ben Thorne won in 1:24:46, but the first American was Nick Christie in 1:30:32.
Katie Burnett won the Women's race in 1:44:02!
Finally (for the Walks), Christie won the USATF 20K (road) in 1:24:36!
Miranda Melville's 1:36:01 finished well ahead of AR holder Maria Michta-Coffey's 1:39:55!!

The Boston Marathon returned to its traditional spring date!
Evans Chebet removed himself from Lawrence Cherono very late in the race, winning in 2:06:51 over Cherono's 2:07:21!
In 7th came the lead American, Scott Fauble!
His 2:08:52 makes him 8th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
In 9th was Elkanah Kibet's 2:09:07, making him 14th A-T US!

Maybe the greatest RACE of the year was Boston's duel over the final mile between Ababel Yeshanah and Peres Jepchirchir!
Going back and forth several times, Jepchirchir finally prevailed, time of 2:21:01 to Yeshanah's 2:21:05!
Mary Ngugi was 3rd in 2:21:32!
Forty two year old Edna Kiplagat ended 4th in 2:21:40, great for ANY age!!
The leading American turned out to be Nell Rojas, her PR of 2:25:57 making her 17th A-T US!
(As my readers know, I include Boston course times on my lists, as I feel its toughness offsets it's slight downhill measurement!)
Stephanie Bruce is ending her career, and finished 12th in 2:28:02!
Des Linden was 13th in 2:28:47!
Favored American Molly Seidel DNF'ed around 16 miles!

The Hamburg Marathon saw Yelemzerf Yehualaw run the fastest ever debut race, her 2:17:23 giving her the Ethiopia National Record, and the Age 22 Record!
It makes her 6th A-T World!
Cy Kotut's 2:04:47 just edged Stephen Kissa's 2:04:48, but Kissa got the NR of Uganda as a consolation prize!!
The Women's division at the Vienna Marathon was won by Vibian (correct spelling!) Chepkurui, time of 2:20:59!
The always quick Rotterdam Marathon Men's race was won by Abdi Nagiege (sp??) in 2:04:56!
It's the National Record of the Netherlands!
He beat Leul Gebrselassie, who was also timed in 2:04:56!!
Haven Hailu won the Women's race in 2:22:01, while 2nd placer Nienke Brinkonen's 2:22:51 got her the Netherlands NR also!!

Finally (for my Marathon reportage!), we have Seoul's Marathon!
Joan Chelimo won the Women's race in 2:18:04, ranking her 13th A-T World!
Sutume Asefa wasn't far back, her 2:18:12 ranking her 15th A-T World!
In 3rd came Eunice Chumba, her 2:20:02 giving her Bahrain's National Record!
Mosinet Geremew won a close Men's race in 2:04:43 over the 2:04:49 by Hespasa Nieyasa (sp??)!!
Daniel Nascimento was 3rd in 2:04:51, but gets Brazil's NR for his effort!
And...we have Elish McColgan winning a 5K race in 14:45!!

I have such a variety of marks from everywhere that I've decided to report them in event groups!
(To save space!)

Sprints (100 to 400) & Hurdles (100H, 110H, and 400H)
In Maryland, Devon Allen won the 110H in 13.12.
He also ran the 100 in 10.20 and 200 in 20.65 over a 2 day period!
In North Carolina, Cambrea Sturgis burned up the track with her 100 of 10.87!!
This ranks her 22nd A-T US, tied with 1 other!
It also cuts Allyson Felix OFF my US list, her 10.89 dating from 2012!!

Speaking of the Fabulous One, Felix sped a 200 in 22.40 in South Carolina!!
Matt Boling's 19.92 over half a lap in Georgia (-0.9 wind!!) makes him 11th A-T Collegiate!!
Steven Gardiner ran a World Leading 400 in 44.22 in Louisiana!
He beat Vernon Norwood's 44.59, and Matthew Hudson-Smith's 44.61!
In Kentucky, Christian Coleman matched Boling's time of 19.92!!

Abby Steiner's PR of 22.05 netted her the Junior Class Record!
She ranks 4th A-T Collegiate, and 20th A-T US!!
Masai Russell's 12.71 over the 100H misses my Collegiate list by just 0.01 seconds!!
Khalifah Rosser ran the 400H in 48.26 at the Michael Johnson Invite!
The MJ meet also saw some great wind-aided times!
Brittany Brown shocked Gabby Thomas by winning the 100 in 10.66 (3.2 wind!) over Thomas's 10.80!
And Tonea Marshall used a slight breeze of 2.1 to run the 100H in 12.36!

Distances (800 through 5000)
Sarah Hendrick won an 800 in 2:00.98, ranking her 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
In Virginia, Virginia's (Sic!) Mia Barnett took the 1500 in 4:11.32!
Katelyn Tuohy is having a very solid year, her latest effort being 15:14.61 over 5000 meters!
It's the Soph Class Record, and makes her 8th A-T Collegiate!
Jenna Magness was a good 2nd, time of 15:26.21!
Athing Mu cruised to 2:02.07 in an 800!
The Oregon Relays saw Christian Noble race a 1500 in 3:36.00, making him 11th A-T Collegiate!
He beat the 3:36.44 by Reed Brown!
This makes him 18th A-T Collegiate!

Also in Oregon, Mason Ferlic sped the 3000SC in 8:23.92!
Olin Hacker's 5000 in 13:19.34 ranks him 19th A-T Collegiate!
Cut OFF the Collegiate list was the legendary Sydney Maree, his 13:20.63 dating from 1979!!
Finally (in this group), we have the attempt to break the World Record in the 4 X Mile Relay!!
A team of UO-connected guys missed the WR, but their 15:52.05 ranks them 2nd A-T World!
Much of the blame has been pinned to Cole Hocker, whose 3:57.31 3rd leg was seen as hurtful to the cause!!
Cooper Teare sped home in 3:53.24!
A current UO team was 2nd in 16:29.87!!

This post is already quite long, but I can't leave out the field events!!

Lamara Distin HJ'ed 6-4 at MJ's meet!
Hana Moll upped her OUTdoor PV best to 14-5.25!
This makes her 8th A-T HS!!

The former Weeks twins total was "just" 28-8.50!!

Molly Haywood PV'ed 14-2, ranking her 12th A-T HS!

Mt SAC Offers Records in Abundance

The Mount San Antonio College Relays--aka Mt SAC--put on quite a show!
That is, if you include its subsidiary called the USATF Golden Games!
I do!
Just as I don't call the former "US vs the World" events the Penn Relays held to be a separate meet, I see the USATF Golden Games to be a PART OF Mt SAC, not a separate meet!!
That said, let's see what took place there!

Ayden Owens scored a massive 8528 points to win the Decathlon!
It's said that's the Collegiate Record, but I say that Lindon Victor's 8539 windy score is!
Thus, Owens ranks 2nd A-T Collegiate!
He does get the Junior Class Record, and Puerto Rico's National Record!
Austin West's 8179 ranks him 24th A-T Collegiate!

Fred Kerley and Michael Norman had quite a race over 200 meters, Kerley's 19.80 edging Norman's 19.83!
Kerley gets the Meet Record!
Rai Benjamin was a good 3rd, time of 20.01!

It was in the heats, but Elaine Thompson-Herah sped the 100 in 10.89--then didn't run the final!
That heat was pretty fast, as Aleia Hobbs was 2nd in 10.95, Michelle Lee-Ahye was 3rd in 10.96, and Gabby Thomas 4th in 11.00!
Thomas also won the 200 in 22.02!
She beat the 22.29 by Brittany Brown!

The Women's Hammer Throw saw Brooke Andersen heave her ball and chain 251-10, which broke her own Meet Record!
Camryn Rogers threw 248-5 in 2nd, breaking her own Collegiate Record, her own Senior Class Record, and tying the National Record of Canada!!

Karissa Schweizer took the 5000 in 15:02.77!
Emily Infeld was 2nd in 15:05.80!
Colorado's Abby Nichols ran 15:15.95 in 5th, which ranks her 8th A-T Collegiate!
Mercy Chelangat's 6th place time of 15:17.28 ranks her 11th A-T Collegiate!
And I must mention Maggie Montoya--who was in the Boulder supermarket where she worked when a mass shooting took place awhile ago--finished 7th in 15:19.85!

Courtney Wayment pretty much soloed to a time of 9:26.88 in the 3000SC!
It's the Meet Record, and ranks her 3rd A-T Collegiate!
Val Constien was a solid 2nd in 9:31.20!
Michael Cherry sped the 400 in 44.28, beating Alison Dos Santos's 44.54!
But if you add that 44.54 to Dos Santos's 46.72 over 400H, you get a Combined Events time of 1:31.26!
That ranks him 3rd A-T World on that C-E list!

Raevyn Rogers front ran her 800 in 1:58.77, an unusual strategy for her!
Valarie Allman's DT of 227-11 is the new Meet Record!
Jorinde Van Klinken threw 207-11 for 2nd!
Danielle Thomas-Dodd won a competitive SP with her throw of 62-1.
Jessica Woodard's 61-7 took 2nd, while 3rd went to the 61-4.75 by Jessica Ramsey!
Vashti Cunningham HJ'ed 6-5 for an easy win!

Julien Alfred ran the 100 in 10.98, which is the National Record of Saint Lucia!
It also ranks her 16th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
Devonte Burnett won the Men's 100 in 9.99!
Monae Nichols took the LJ with 22-6.25, which makes her 9th A-T Collegiate!
Clayton Fritsch (Who's he??  LOL) won the PV with 19-0.25, making him 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
Jacob Wooten cleared the same height in 2nd!

In other Mt SAC events--
Elise Cranny won the 1500 in 4:08.07.
Dylan Jacobs just beat Amon Kemboi over 10000 meters, 28:01 94 to 28:02.24!
Andrenette Knight's 54.39 took the 400H!
Darrell Hill's 71-1.50 won the SP, with Josh Awotunde's 70-11.75 in 2nd, and Tripp Piperi's 70-7.25 taking 3rd!
Kara Winger let fly her Javelin 207-7 for an easy W!

Jonathan Jones won the 400 in 45.30!
Earnie Sears HJ'ed 7-6.50 to win!
Rudy Winkler's 259-6 won the Hammer Throw.
Daniel Stahl's DT of 221-11 beat Mykolas Alekna, who reached 218-6!
And in a good 100H, Tonea Marshall timed 12.46, beating the 12.56 by Kendra Harrison, and the 12.59 by Tia Jones!!

In South Carolina, Rachel Glenn HJ'ed 6-2.75!
I have a solid series of High School marks to report!
Newbury Park has a good Women's distance crew also!
They ran the 4 X 1600 in a quick 19:48.81!
Speaking of whom, the Boys DMR team ran 9:55.24, with Colin Sahlman anchoring in 4:04.18!
Gary Martin timed 4:00.95 for the full Mile, making him 17th A-T HS!
Rheinhardt Harrison ran the 800 in a PR of 1:48.05, making him 14th A-T HS!

Jordan Anthony's Century of 10.14 makes him 8th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Maddox Hamm PV'ed 17-9, making him 19th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
And Rachel Homoly PV'ed 13-10.50, but she has a better mark!

To end this post, what better way than to report on a World and American Record??!!
But to do so, we must move back INdoors!!
You see, New Balance wanted to open their new INdoor track facility in Boston with a BANG!!
So they gathered together a team of NB All-Stars--and a special guest--to go for the Distance Medley Relay Record!!
And they even called the team the NB All-Stars!!

Heather MacLean led off with a 1200 time of 3:14.92!
The Race to Recordsville was ON!
A last-minute substitute for Sydney McLaughlin--who felt a little niggle, so decided to withdraw--Kendell Ellis flew in from California the night before, and still sped 52.04 for her 400 leg!
She handed off to stud HS'er Roisin Willis, who stayed together enough to run a solo 800 leg of 2:03.29!
Then came EPSP--aka Elle Purrier St Pierre--and she flew around the new track in 4:23.60 for her 1600 leg!
Their time of 10:33.85 took a bit more than 6 seconds off the previous Records!!
An amazing solo run!!
(The 2nd place team ended about 2 minutes and 25 seconds later!!)

See you soon with more exciting results!!

Records Keep Going Down, Down, DOWN!

It's been observed of late (on the T&FN Message Board) that this early OUTdoor season is seeing a LOT of marks not expected to happen in March and April!
Some feel there should be a letdown in a "post-Olympic" year!
I disagree!
This past INdoor season saw a record number of marks added to my Top 24 A-T Performers lists!
As you'll soon see, this trend is continuing OUTdoors!
So instead of referring to 2022 as a "post-Olympic" year, I see it as "a World Championship year"--and even more important, as a HOME WC year!!!
Whatever the reasons, it's exciting!!

The Arcadia meet for HS'ers is one such venue for great early season marks, even if limited to High Schoolers!
As noted many times, I don't care about marks made over the 1600 and 3200 distances, as I prefer the One and Two Milers!
However, we can't ignore what 2 of the Newbury Park crew ran over 3200 here!
Colin Sahlman timed 8:34.99 (sub-60 last 400), beating his teammate Lex Young, who ended in 8:35.72!
Dalia Frias also shone over that distance, as her 9:55.50 showed us!

Both Moll twins took over after the other PV'ers had finished!
Amanda wound up beating her sister Hana, 14-4 to 13-10!
JaiCieonna Gero-Holt (Gotta create a shortened name for this phenom!!) High Jumped 6-0, but missed the Frosh Class Record by three-fourths of an inch!
Gabriela Garcia's JT of 165-0 ranks her 23rd A-T HS!
Simeon (sp??) Birnbaum won the Mile in 4:07.88!
Allison Ince took the 800 in 2:05.42!
Cade Moran won the SP with a 66-10!

But the standout performance goes to Sadie Englehardt!!
Her 4:35.16 full Mile breaks her own already great Frosh Class Record from just weeks ago!!
She now ranks 3rd A-T HS--as a freakin' 9th Grader!!!
In 2nd came Chloe Foerster, whose 4:40.27 misses my HS list by a mere 0.03 seconds!!

Florida's Jones Memorial was STACKED this year, and the marks were reflective of that!!
For example, Erriyon Knighton--still a HS'er despite being a Professional--ran the 100 in 10.04!
As you know, I have a special Records section for HS PRO's, which has both the records, and Class records!
Knighton's time is the HS PRO record and the Junior Class record for HS PRO's!!
And he beat Noah Lyles, who ran 10.05!
In a separate race, Matt Boling's 9.98 misses the Collegiate list by just 0.01 seconds!

Moad Sahafi took the 2 lapper in 1:43.69, nabbing him the Senior Class Record!
He ranks 3rd A-T Collegiate!
Trey Cunningham ran the 110H in 13.22--in his heat!!
This ranks him 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!
He won the final in 13.38!
Randolph Ross and Ryan Willie had a close race in the 400, Ross edging Willie, 45.15 to 45.16!
Matthew Hudson-Smith, a Brit, took another 400 in 44.82!
Quincy Hall won the 400H in 48.55!

Both Men's Relays were top tier!
An Adidas team--with Knighton and Grant Holloway on 2 of the legs!--took the 4 X 100 in 38.09!

An Adidas team won in a quick 2:57.72!
Right behind them, Florida's 2:58.53 broke the Collegiate Record!!

Remember Madison Wiltrout?
Several years ago, when a HS'er, her 185-8 won her the HSR in the Javelin Throw!
Then she got injured, and needed surgery, so the rest of her HS career was spent clawing her way back!
And now she's finally PR'ed!!
Her 187-4 at the Jones meet misses my Collegiate list by 11 inches!
But keep an eye on this former prodigy!
Katelyn Fairchild--another star when in HS--hit the ground at 179-2!
She's a Frosh!

BTW, Mt SAC was returning after 2 years absence due to Covid and other factors!
