Closing Out 2021 OUTdoors

This post will include ALL I have left to report about the 2021 OUTdoor season--except for my Athletes, Performances, Events, and Personalities of the Year, which will be next!
I'll do the Roads first, then Cross Country!
Enjoy!

Weini Kelati has arrived!!
Her 31:18 breaks the American Record for a Women Only course!
She did it at the Boston Women's 10K, and ended way ahead of 2nd placer Sharon Lokedi, who ran 31:57!!

The Valencia Half was F-A-S-T!!
And you may not believe HOW fast--until you see the numbers!
Letesenbet Gidey smashed every Record imaginable in her 62:52 run over 13.1 miles!
That's an average of approximately 4:57 per mile--the first time a Woman has run a sub-5 average over this distance!
Double it, and she ends with a full Marathon of 2:05:44!!
Assuming she passes all the tests (You know what I mean!!), this can be rated as the best distance race any Woman in history has ever run!!
She gets the World Record, the Ethiopia National Record, and the Age 23 Record!!
Stunning!!

Yelenzerf Yehualaw was a speedy 2nd in 63:51, about 5:01 per mile!!
She is 2nd A-T World, and gets the Age 22 Record, and the best 2nd Place mark!!
Sheila Kiprotich's 64:54 makes her 9th A-T World!
Brenda Jepleting was 4th in 65:44.
In 8th came Sarah Lahti, whose 68:19 is the National Record of Sweden!!

The Men had depth galore!!
Abel Kipchumba took the key Laurels, his 58:07 narrowly beating Rhonex Kipruto's 58:09!!
Kipchumba ranks 6th A-T World!
Daniel Mateiki (sp??) ran 58:26, ranking him 10th A-T World!
In 4th came Kennedy Kimutai's 58:28, which makes him 11th A-T World!

In 6th came Muktar Edris's 58:40!
This makes him 14th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
And it nabs him the best 6th Place mark!
In 7th was Matthew Kimeli's 58:43, which is the best 7th Place mark!
He is 20th A-T World!
Mel Kiptum's 59:02 gets him the best 8th Place mark!
Rogers Kwemoi gets the best 9th Place mark with his time of 59:16!
The best 10th Place mark is Felix Kipkoech's 59:28!
Collins Koros's 60:06 gets him the best 11th Place mark!
And the best 12th Place mark goes to the 60:09 by Aman Petros!!

Weini Kelati struck again, as she took the USATF 5K Championships (held in NYC) in the course record time of 15:18!!
Grace Barnett wasn't close in taking 2nd in 15:45!
The Men's race WAS close, as Drew Hunter got the nod over Matthew Centrowitz, both timed in 13:53!

The Lisbon Half saw Jacob Kiplimo grab the World Record by ONE second, his 57:31 breaking his own Age 20 Record, and his own National Record of Uganda!
Tsehaye Gemechu took the Women's race in 66:06!

The USATF Half in South Carolina had some good depth for Americans!
Conner Mantz took the race in 60:55, making him 10th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
Sam Chelanga, in 60:59, wasn't far behind!
Nico Montanez closed out the podium spots with his 61:13 in 3rd!
He now ranks 14th A-T US!
Clayton Young ran 61:18, making him 16th A-T US!
Futsam Ziensellassie's 61:21 gave him 5th place!
Augustus Maiyo's 61:33 makes him 21st A-T US, tied with 1 other!

For the Women, Keira D'Amato won it all with her 67:55.
This makes her 6th A-T US!
Natosha Rogers was the runner-up, her 69:36 making her 13th A-T US!
Dakotah Lindwurm's 69:40 makes her 15th A-T US!
Lauren Paquette was close behind in 69:46, making her 18th A-T US!
And Makena Morley took over 21st on the A-T US list with her 5th place time of 69:57!!

Now on to XC!
Let me remind you of my reasoning for limiting my coverage of XC in this blog.
It's simple.
This blog is concerned mainly with Records and Marks, meaning times!!
Since XC courses vary in terrain (some hilly, some on golf courses, some with hay bales as "barriers", etc), times become basically meaningless when it comes to comparing them coming from different courses!
Essentially the same reasoning I give for why I don't pay attention to marks from Oversize Tracks INdoors!!
That said, SOME things can be learned from XC results, so following is an abbreviated array of results from the 2021 Cross Country season, mostly from the Collegiates!!

Conner Mantz started his season with two big wins--at the Griak race, and at Pre-Nationals!
His 23:53 (over 8K) at Griak just nipped the 23:54 by Wesley Kiptoo!
The Women's 6K (Equalize the distances at TEN K for both Men and Women, please!!!) went to Callie Logue in 20:57!!
Mantz's time at the Pre-Nats (held in Florida) was a quick 22:47, but he needed all of it to keep Adriaan Wildschutt in 2nd, as he timed 22:49!
The Women also had a close race!
Abby Nichols's 19:46 edged out Lauren Gregory's 19:47!

Another important early season meet is the Nuttycombe Invitational!
The Men's 8K saw Wesley Kiptoo's 23:11 beat the 23:20 by Cooper Teare!
The Women were led by the 19:57 of Ceili McCabe!
Kelsey Chmeil took 2nd in 20:00, which beat the 20:08 by her teammate at North Carolina State, Katelyn Tuohy!!
However, Tuohy was 3 spots being Chmeil, in 5th!!

The Conferences are very important in Collegiate sports, especially in T&F & XC!!
We'll look at just the "major" Conferences here!

The ACC Men's race went to Adriaan Wildschutt, time of 23:07!
Once again, NC State teammates Kelsey Chmeil and Katelyn Tuohy had a battle royal, with Chmeil's 20:02 defeating Tuohy's 20:09!

In the Big 10, I'm liking (sic!) the chances of Bob Liking (HaHa!) to win, and he did, in a slow 24:38!
He beat the 24:42 of Olin Hacker!
Megan Hasz took the Women's race in 20:34, just edging the 20:35 of Ericka VanderLende!

Wesley Kiptoo took the Big 12 Men's race in 23:32!
Ceili McCabe and Callie Logue both timed out in 20:44, with McCabe getting the W!

The Pac-12 is my home turf Conference, as I've lived the last 63 years in Pac-12 territory!!
Charles Hicks took the Men's race in 23:34!
Cooper Teare and Eduardo Herrera battled it out for 2nd, with Teare's 23:44 nipping Herrera's 23:45!!
Abby Nichols dominated the Women's race, winning easily in 20:25!
Emily Covert took 2nd in 20:36!
In 3rd was Emily Venters's 20:40!

The SEC Men's race went to Eliud Kipsang in 23:33.
He beat the 23:37 of Amon Kemboi, and the 23:38 of Mario Romo!
The Women's race was taken by Mercy Chelangat's 19:55!
Joyce Kimeli was 2nd in 20:04.
Krissy Gear ended in 3rd with her 20:08 time!

Conner Mantz won the West Coast Conference Men's race in 23:01, easily winning over James Mwaura's 23:17!
Whittni Orton's 20:01 took the Women's race!!

Still with me??

North Carolina State took the Women's Team contest with 84 points!
BYU was 2nd with 122 points!
New Mexico took 3rd with 130 points!
And Colorado was 4th with 187 points!

Did the NXN High School race take place in 2021?
I didn't see any results, so I'm assuming it was cancelled by Covid--or some other reason!
However, Footlocker went on, albeit now being called (and sponsored by) Eastbay!

The races went to Riley Hough in 15:11.4, and Natalie Cook in 17:15.0!!

Next post is the Awards post for the 2021 OUTdoor season!!
That's always fun!
See you soon!
