A few notes--
NO INdoor marks were considered for these awards!
This post has all 4 of my core groups, as I didn't do the Collegiate and High School AOY's when I normally do them--in September--so they're included here!
If a Record was broken more then once, I list only the latest Record!

Honorable Mentions---Ryan Crouser, Karsten Warholm, Jacob Kiplimo, Johannes Vetter, Hughes Zhango, Mondo Duplantis, Grant Holloway, Noah Lyles, Damian Warner, Daniel Stahl

World Athlete of the Year--WOMEN
ELAINE THOMPSON-HERAH--The Female side was LOADED in 2021, as you'll soon see!!  But I had to choose somebody, and the AOY was determined by how many events a person did.  Her times in the 100 & 200 rate VERY high on the A-T lists! Letesenbet Gidey broke TWO World Records, and others broke WR's as well, while ET-H didn't.  However, her dominance in the Sprints prevailed in the end!!
Honorable Mentions---Yulimar Rojas, Sydney McLaughlin, Delilah Muhammed, Lijiao Gong, Mariya Lasitskene, Valerie Allman, DeAnna Price, Anzhelika Sidorova, Letesenbet Gidey, Femke Bol, Ese Brume, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Maria Andrejczyk, Athing Mu, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn

US Athlete of the Year--MEN
RYAN CROUSER---No one was more consistent at stratispheric levels than this cowboy hat wearing behemoth!!  Despite some great competition, he dominated his event like no other!  Every throw seemed to be a potential WR, and when he got it, it was massive!!

US Athlete of the Year--WOMEN
VALERIE ALLMAN--She broke the AR in the DT more than once, and won a bunch against the rest of the world!  Not only that, she's one of the few Throwers to make my World A-T list in the 21st century!!
Honorable Mentions---McLaughlin, Muhammed, Price, Mu, Courtney Frerichs, Gabby Thomas, Jessica Ramsey, Raven Saunders, Katie Nageotte, Elise Cranny, Maggie Malone, Keturah Orji, Jordan Gray, Annie Kunz

Collegiate Athlete of the Year--MEN

Honorable Mentions---Terrance Laird, Randolph Ross, Yared Nuguse, Sean Burrell, Karel Tilga, Turner Washington

Collegiate Athlete of the Year--WOMEN
ATHING MU--Broke the 400 and 800 CR's looking so smooth and in control!  (And don't forget, the Collegiate season ends with the NCAA Championships!  As we all know, she improved mightily after the season ended--though those marks weren't considered!!)
Honorable Mentions---Tara Davis, Tonea Marshall, Adelaide Aquilla, Rachel Glenn, Jorinde Van Klinken, Ruth Usoro, Camryn Rogers, Jasmine Moore, Twanisha Terry, Tyra Gittens

High School Athlete of the Year--MEN
JAYLEN SLADE--Slade, like ET-H, dominated both sprints, and that was enough to make him AOY!
Honorable Mentions--Hobbs Kessler, John Lester, Bryce Foster

Special mention of Erriyon Knighton, who turned Pro, and set two HS PRO Records--and ran in the Tokyo Olympics as well!!

High School Athlete of the Year--WOMEN
JENNA HUTCHINS--She smashed Mary Cain's HSR in the 5000 with a time that would have made her competitive with the Collegiate crowd!!  Enough said!

Special mention to the Moll sisters--Amanda and Hana!!

World Performance of the Year--WOMEN
LETESENBET GIDEY--I know she broke the 10000 WR also, but her 62:52 Half was so other-worldly, I had to pick it as my POY!!  She averaged about 4:57 per mile for 13.1 Miles!!  WOW!!
Honorable Mentions--Gidey's 29:01.03 10000, Yulimar Rojas (51-5), Sidorova (16-5.25), Faith Kipyegon (3:51.07), ET-H (10.54 and 21.53), Gabby Thomas (21.61), Shaunae Miller-Uibo (48.36), Sifan Hassan (29:06.82 and 4:14.74), Norah Tanui (8:53.65), Athing Mu (1:55.04), Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.60), Gudaf Tsegay (14:13.32), McLaughlin (51.46), Muhammed (51.58), Femke Bol (52.03), Allman (233-5), Yang (1:23:49), Lasitskene (6-8.75), Gong (67-6.25), Brume (23-6.25), Price (263-6), Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (12.26), Andrejczyk (234-3)

Honorable Mentions--Mu (49.57 and 1:57.73), Texas A&M (3:22.34), Van Klinken (230-4--Most feel it was strongly wind-aided--otherwise, ir might have gotten my POY here!!)

HOBBS KESSLER--His 3:34.36 put him into the Trials!
Honorable Mentions--Jaylen Slade (10.09 and 20.20), John Lester (1:47.65), Bryce Foster (71-1 and 210-10--HS implements)

High School Performance of the Year--WOMEN
JENNA HUTCHINS--Her 15:34.47 was even faster than Katelyn Tuohy's INdoor HSR, although I don't see it as an "absolute" record, but rather "just" the OUTdoor HSR--as it should be!!
Honorable Mentions--Roisin Willis (2:00.78), Paige Sommers (14-9), Amanda Moll (14-7.25), Sydney Masciarelli (6:25.35 for the 2K SC), Willy (4:38.14), Pedigo (5493)

I've still got Personalities and Events to cover--oh my word!!
Hang in there, my friends!

US Personality of the Year--MEN
GRANT HOLLOWAY--Watch his incredible athleticism, and watch him during his interviews after he wins!!

US Personality of the Year--WOMEN
TARA DAVIS--She's recently married, but that hasn't stopped her from jumping around and dancing and flinging her braids around to entertain her legion of fans, no matter the seriousness of the competition!

Special mention for Sha'Carri Richardson!  How to put this?  She's seemingly a great athlete, but her attitude needs a LOT of work!!  She is the "dark side" of my POY award!  I wish her well!!

Collegiate Personality of the Year--MEN
JUVAUGHN HARRISON--He's not only great at two disparate events, but he's friendly and super confident!

Collegiate Personality of the Year--WOMEN
TARA DAVIS (See above!)

High School Personality of the Year--MEN
HOBBS KESSLER--He came "out of nowhere" to suddenly break Records and get people talking!  And he's coached (or mentored, at least) by New Zealand's Nick Willis!!

High School Personality of the Year--WOMEN
THE MOLL SISTERS, AMANDA and HANA--Quite a pair of PV'ers, reminding us of the former Weeks twins!!

The Event of the Year goes to the event that has the most marks from 2021 on my OUTdoor lists!!

BUT--
there were a total of 505 (!!!) marks dated 2021 that made my various OUTdoor lists!!!
That was the most ever!!!
The breakdown---

On the World lists, Women out-dueled the Men, 83 to 61.
On the US lists, the Women were even better, winning the count by 110 to 63!!
The Collegiates also saw the Women dominate, this time by 86 to 62!
The HS'ers, however, were pretty dry in 2021, as the Women once again led, but with just 23 marks to the 17 by the Guys!!
Totals for the Women was 302!
The Men's total was 203!
As noted, FIVE HUNDRED and FIVE marks!!
WOW!!

And THAT is a wrap!!
INDOORS is next!!!

Closing Out 2021 OUTdoors

This post will include ALL I have left to report about the 2021 OUTdoor season--except for my Athletes, Performances, Events, and Personalities of the Year, which will be next!
I'll do the Roads first, then Cross Country!
Enjoy!

Weini Kelati has arrived!!
Her 31:18 breaks the American Record for a Women Only course!
She did it at the Boston Women's 10K, and ended way ahead of 2nd placer Sharon Lokedi, who ran 31:57!!

The Valencia Half was F-A-S-T!!
And you may not believe HOW fast--until you see the numbers!
Letesenbet Gidey smashed every Record imaginable in her 62:52 run over 13.1 miles!
That's an average of approximately 4:57 per mile--the first time a Woman has run a sub-5 average over this distance!
Double it, and she ends with a full Marathon of 2:05:44!!
Assuming she passes all the tests (You know what I mean!!), this can be rated as the best distance race any Woman in history has ever run!!
She gets the World Record, the Ethiopia National Record, and the Age 23 Record!!
Stunning!!

Yelenzerf Yehualaw was a speedy 2nd in 63:51, about 5:01 per mile!!
She is 2nd A-T World, and gets the Age 22 Record, and the best 2nd Place mark!!
Sheila Kiprotich's 64:54 makes her 9th A-T World!
Brenda Jepleting was 4th in 65:44.
In 8th came Sarah Lahti, whose 68:19 is the National Record of Sweden!!

The Men had depth galore!!
Abel Kipchumba took the key Laurels, his 58:07 narrowly beating Rhonex Kipruto's 58:09!!
Kipchumba ranks 6th A-T World!
Daniel Mateiki (sp??) ran 58:26, ranking him 10th A-T World!
In 4th came Kennedy Kimutai's 58:28, which makes him 11th A-T World!

In 6th came Muktar Edris's 58:40!
This makes him 14th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
And it nabs him the best 6th Place mark!
In 7th was Matthew Kimeli's 58:43, which is the best 7th Place mark!
He is 20th A-T World!
Mel Kiptum's 59:02 gets him the best 8th Place mark!
Rogers Kwemoi gets the best 9th Place mark with his time of 59:16!
The best 10th Place mark is Felix Kipkoech's 59:28!
Collins Koros's 60:06 gets him the best 11th Place mark!
And the best 12th Place mark goes to the 60:09 by Aman Petros!!

Weini Kelati struck again, as she took the USATF 5K Championships (held in NYC) in the course record time of 15:18!!
Grace Barnett wasn't close in taking 2nd in 15:45!
The Men's race WAS close, as Drew Hunter got the nod over Matthew Centrowitz, both timed in 13:53!

The Lisbon Half saw Jacob Kiplimo grab the World Record by ONE second, his 57:31 breaking his own Age 20 Record, and his own National Record of Uganda!
Tsehaye Gemechu took the Women's race in 66:06!

The USATF Half in South Carolina had some good depth for Americans!
Conner Mantz took the race in 60:55, making him 10th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
Sam Chelanga, in 60:59, wasn't far behind!
Nico Montanez closed out the podium spots with his 61:13 in 3rd!
He now ranks 14th A-T US!
Clayton Young ran 61:18, making him 16th A-T US!
Futsam Ziensellassie's 61:21 gave him 5th place!
Augustus Maiyo's 61:33 makes him 21st A-T US, tied with 1 other!

For the Women, Keira D'Amato won it all with her 67:55.
This makes her 6th A-T US!
Natosha Rogers was the runner-up, her 69:36 making her 13th A-T US!
Dakotah Lindwurm's 69:40 makes her 15th A-T US!
Lauren Paquette was close behind in 69:46, making her 18th A-T US!
And Makena Morley took over 21st on the A-T US list with her 5th place time of 69:57!!

Now on to XC!
Let me remind you of my reasoning for limiting my coverage of XC in this blog.
It's simple.
This blog is concerned mainly with Records and Marks, meaning times!!
Since XC courses vary in terrain (some hilly, some on golf courses, some with hay bales as "barriers", etc), times become basically meaningless when it comes to comparing them coming from different courses!
Essentially the same reasoning I give for why I don't pay attention to marks from Oversize Tracks INdoors!!
That said, SOME things can be learned from XC results, so following is an abbreviated array of results from the 2021 Cross Country season, mostly from the Collegiates!!

Conner Mantz started his season with two big wins--at the Griak race, and at Pre-Nationals!
His 23:53 (over 8K) at Griak just nipped the 23:54 by Wesley Kiptoo!
The Women's 6K (Equalize the distances at TEN K for both Men and Women, please!!!) went to Callie Logue in 20:57!!
Mantz's time at the Pre-Nats (held in Florida) was a quick 22:47, but he needed all of it to keep Adriaan Wildschutt in 2nd, as he timed 22:49!
The Women also had a close race!
Abby Nichols's 19:46 edged out Lauren Gregory's 19:47!

Another important early season meet is the Nuttycombe Invitational!
The Men's 8K saw Wesley Kiptoo's 23:11 beat the 23:20 by Cooper Teare!
The Women were led by the 19:57 of Ceili McCabe!
Kelsey Chmeil took 2nd in 20:00, which beat the 20:08 by her teammate at North Carolina State, Katelyn Tuohy!!
However, Tuohy was 3 spots being Chmeil, in 5th!!

The Conferences are very important in Collegiate sports, especially in T&F & XC!!
We'll look at just the "major" Conferences here!

The ACC Men's race went to Adriaan Wildschutt, time of 23:07!
Once again, NC State teammates Kelsey Chmeil and Katelyn Tuohy had a battle royal, with Chmeil's 20:02 defeating Tuohy's 20:09!

In the Big 10, I'm liking (sic!) the chances of Bob Liking (HaHa!) to win, and he did, in a slow 24:38!
He beat the 24:42 of Olin Hacker!
Megan Hasz took the Women's race in 20:34, just edging the 20:35 of Ericka VanderLende!

Wesley Kiptoo took the Big 12 Men's race in 23:32!
Ceili McCabe and Callie Logue both timed out in 20:44, with McCabe getting the W!

The Pac-12 is my home turf Conference, as I've lived the last 63 years in Pac-12 territory!!
Charles Hicks took the Men's race in 23:34!
Cooper Teare and Eduardo Herrera battled it out for 2nd, with Teare's 23:44 nipping Herrera's 23:45!!
Abby Nichols dominated the Women's race, winning easily in 20:25!
Emily Covert took 2nd in 20:36!
In 3rd was Emily Venters's 20:40!

The SEC Men's race went to Eliud Kipsang in 23:33.
He beat the 23:37 of Amon Kemboi, and the 23:38 of Mario Romo!
The Women's race was taken by Mercy Chelangat's 19:55!
Joyce Kimeli was 2nd in 20:04.
Krissy Gear ended in 3rd with her 20:08 time!

Conner Mantz won the West Coast Conference Men's race in 23:01, easily winning over James Mwaura's 23:17!
Whittni Orton's 20:01 took the Women's race!!

Still with me??
The NCAA Championships, Division One, is next!

North Carolina State took the Women's Team contest with 84 points!
BYU was 2nd with 122 points!
New Mexico took 3rd with 130 points!
And Colorado was 4th with 187 points!

Did the NXN High School race take place in 2021?
I didn't see any results, so I'm assuming it was cancelled by Covid--or some other reason!
However, Footlocker went on, albeit now being called (and sponsored by) Eastbay!

The races went to Riley Hough in 15:11.4, and Natalie Cook in 17:15.0!!

Next post is the Awards post for the 2021 OUTdoor season!!
That's always fun!
See you soon!

Mainly Marathons

 Blame Covid!
Autumn is suddenly BUSY with those pesky 26.2 mile races!
Besides Berlin and Chicago and NYC and Fukuoka and Sacramento--always listed as fall marathons--Covid's delays have moved London and Boston months down the road--so to speak--as well.
Meaning, this post will be FILLED with results from mainly Marathons!!
(I'll add a few other things if there's room!)

Berlin is fast, and was again in 2021, but maybe the full calendar of marathons thinned the depth of quality a bit!
Idema Guye won the Men's portion in 2:03:45, making him 20th A-T World!
Cut OFF my World list was quite a venerable name--Haile Gebreselassie's 2:03:59 from 2008!!
The Women's race was won by Gololyton (sp??) Gebreslase in 2:20:09!

Moving to London, we see Joyciline Jepkosgei is bringing her Half speed to the full distance!
Her 2:17:43 makes her 7th A-T World!
But she needed that speed to outdistance her competition!!
Degitu Azimeraw was 2nd in 2:17:58, making her 10th A-T World!
She also gets the Age 22 Record!
Ashete Bekele was 3rd in 2:18:18!
This makes her 12th A-T World, and is the best 3rd Place mark!!

But the depth didn't end there!!
The venerable Brigid Kosgei ended in 2:18:40, and gave her the best 4th Place mark!
The best 5th Place mark wnt to Lonah Salpeter's 2:18:54!!
Moving to 9th, we have Tigist Girma running 2:22:45 for the best 9th Place mark!
Charlotte Purdue ran 2:23:26 for the best 10th Place mark!!
Whew!!

The Men's race went to Sisay Lemma in 2:04:01.
Vincent Kiphumbi (sp??) took Silver in 2:04:28, while Bronze went to Mosinaw Geremew in 2:04:41.

An American Woman won Minnesota's Grandma's Marathon!
Dakotah Lindwurm ran 2:29.04 to take that honor!

The Chicago Marathon is dubbed America's Marathon--and for a reason!
US runners have finished near the front in this race for many years!
Abdi Tura took the Men's race, but American Galen Rupp showed up well, taking 2nd!
Their respective times were 2:06:12 and 2:06:35!

The Women's race was taken by Ruth Chepngetich in 2:22::31, but the next three places were occupied by the Home Country's Women!
Emma Bates took 2nd in 2:24:20, making her 10th A-T US!
Sara Hall was 3rd in 2:27:19, while Keira D'Amato's 2:28:22 took 4th!!

For those not familiar with my blog--or just beginning to read it--you should know I include the Boston course as being legal--even though I'm the only one who does!
The reason being, I knew some people who ran the race, and all of them said how tough it was!
Thus, all times run there are eligible for Records and List placings--IMHO!!
That said, Benson Kipruto took the belated 2021 version in 2:09:51--far removed from any Records or Lists!
Diana (my sister's name!!  LOL) Kipyokei took the Women's race in 2:24:45!
The ageless Edna Kiplagat was 2nd in 2:25:09!
Nell Rojas was 6th, but her 2:27:12 makes her 23rd A-T US!
And Nell's appearance chases another important name OFF my US list--Francie Larrieu's 2:27:35 dating from 1991.

The Paris Marathon saw Elisha Rotich take the Men's race in 2:04:21.
That was the same time given to 2nd placer Haile Kiros!!
The Women's race was too slow to include here!
(I'm rather picky!  LOL)

That was made up for in the Amsterdam race!
Angela Tanui sailed down the course in 2:17:57, ranking her 10th A-T World!
The Men's race produced some Record Book revisions!
Tamirat Tola took the Win in 2:03:39!
This makes him 17th A-T World!!
Bernard Koech was 2nd in 2:04:09!
In third was Hizkel Towelsk (sp??)!
His time of 2:04:35 is Eritrea's new National Record!!

The 26.2 in Rotterdam went to Bashir Abdi in 2:03:36!
This breaks his own National Record of Belgium!!
And it ranks him 16th A-T World!
Marius Kipserem ran 2:04:04 in 2nd, while Dawit Wolde took 3rd in 2:04:27!
The Women's race was won by Sheila Barsosio in 2:22:08!

While Albert Korir cruised through New York City's 5 Borough's in 2:08:22, it was the Women--especially the US Women!!--who created the most excitement!
Peres Jepchirchir won the Gold with 2:22:39
Then--in 3rd--came the laugh a minute Molly Seidel!!
Her PR of 2:24:42 makes her 12th A-T US!
Kellyn Taylor was 6th in 2:26:10!
In 7th was Annie Frisbie, her 2:26:18 making her 16th A-T US!
Next was Laura Thweatt's 2:27:00!
So, four Americans in the top 8!!

The 2021 Fukuoka race was its 75th edition--and its last!!
Michael Githae (sp??) will be listed as its final winner, his time being 2:07:51.
Sayonara, Fukuoka, and rest easy!!

The Valencia Marathon's Men's race was won by Lawrence Cherono in 2:05:12.
Second was Geoff Kamworor in 2:05:23!
Nancy Chelegat won the Women's side with 2:19:31.
This misses my World list by just 3 seconds!!
Etagegne Woldu was 2nd in 2:20:16!

The last Marathon to report in this post is the CIM race in Sacramento!!
The podium was full of Americans!
On top was Sara Vaughn, whose 2:26:53 ranks her 22nd A-T US!
Molly Grabill ran 2:29:17 for the next rung, while the last podium spot was taken by Carrie Dimoff, who ran 2:29:33!!

China had a late season meet!
There, Bingtian Su sprinted the 100 in 9.95!
Ling Li Pole Vaulted 15-5!
And in the Women's Shot Put, Lijlao Gong reached 65-2.75 to beat the 64-10 from J Song.

I found a few marks from earlier in 2021, but worthy of reportage!
In late May, Christian Ceh threw the Discus out 228-1.
In June, Andy Diaz Triple Jumped 57-10.25!
Also in my birth month, Timur Morgunov PV'ed 19-4.25!
Polina Knoroz cleared 15-5 in the same event!
And Rose Almanza took the 800 in a quick 1:56.42!

Finally, I need to make a correction from my eulogy of Agnes Tirop!
I mentioned that her 30:01 World Record 10K was her final race!
I think it was another 10K, which sadly and ironically, she lost to someone else's WR!!
In the Garcia 10000, Kalkidan Gezahegne took the race in 29:38, the World Record!!
Agnes Tirop was 2nd in 30:20!
This makes her murder even worse--that she was taken from us when at the peak of her form!!

Kibiwott Kandie took the Men's race in 26:51, beating the 26:57 by Felix Kipkoech!!

Another sad story to report!
In the 70's and 80's, the Eastern Bloc had an iron hold on the Throws!
Some said it was steroids, but for these three, I tend to disagree.
I think they were just massively talented!

And all of them were from Russia--and all of them were Hammer Throwers!!

In September, the World Record holder--Yuriy Syedikh--died at Age 66!
In a weird circumstance Juri Tamm also died in September, not long after attending Syedikh's funeral!!
Then, in November, Igor Nikulin also passed away!!

This loss of 3 of the greatest athletes in the Throws was certainly tragic, but made us shake our heads a bit that they all competed in the same event at the same time from the same nation!!
Rest in Peace!!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it will take just one more post to catch us up on the 2021 OUTdoor season!
I will then choose my Athletes, Performances, and Personalities of the year for the World and the US!

Small Meets & Lots of Road (& a Eulogy)

 A brief reminder--
The last few posts (and the next several) are filling in the blanks brought on by my "vacation" from blogging since last summer's Prefontaine Classic!
I COULD ignore all this--assuming you already know everything that happened--but my blog has always existed to bring you as many Records and Marks (in a somewhat entertaining fashion!) as possible without being just a long list of names and numbers!
Thus this set of posts reporting on the latter portion of the 2021 OUTdoor seasson--and eventually (SOON!!) the ENTIRE 2021-2022 INdoor season!!
Enjoy reading, and learning (??), and remembering!!

Berlin's ISTAF meet is always a good one!
Sam Kendricks and Chris Nilsen both cleared 19-4.75 in the PV, with Kendricks getting the Win!
Marvin Bracy continued his solid year, taking the 100 in 9.95.

Johannes Vetter had a Javelin Throw of 291-2.
Kate Grace PR'ed in her winning 1500, her 4:01.23 making her 16th A-T US!
And Valerie Allman also PR'ed, her Discus Throw of 233-5 giving her the American and Meet Records!
She is 18th A-T World!

The Zagreb meet was even better!
Marvin Bracy sped the 100 in 9.86, beating the 9.97 of Ronnie Baker!
Kirani James got the Zagreb Meet Record with his 400 of 44.46!
Catalin Tecucescu won the 800 in 1:44.93, breaking his own National Record of Romania!!

Another taking down his own MR was Ryan Crouser, thanks to his SP of 74-11.25!
Tom Walsh was a strong 2nd, his mark being 73-5.50!
Joe Kovacs was 3rd with 71-2.50!

Shaneika Ricketts also nabbed the MR with her Triple Jump of 48-5.50!
Shericka Jackson sped the half lap in 22.30, also taking over MR territory!

Other Zagreb marks--
Devon Allen dipped out of the 13's, his 12.99 in the 110H making him 12th A-T US, tied with 1 other, and 21st A-T World, tied with 1 other!!
KC Lightfoot's 19-3 PV also serves as a new Meet Record!
Getnet Wale took the 3000SC in 8:12.01.

The 2000 is rarely run anymore, but a quick time of 5:25.86 was had by Freywangie Gebreezibeher (sp??).
Dawit Seyaum was 2nd in 5:32.40!
Tobi Amusan continued her good season with a 100H win of 12.61.
Daniel Stahl and Valerie Allman took the Discus Throws, marks of 222-5 and 228-5.
Sandra Perkovic again lost to the American, her best reaching 218-1.

Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce sped a Century in 10.78 in Switzerland.
Home Girl Mujinga Kambundji ran 10.99, but added a 200 of 22.36!
The same meet saw Natoya Goule win the 800 in 1:58.20.
Nadine Visser and Femke Bol took care of the 100H and the 400H, respectively, times of 12.57 and 54.01.
Also, Tina Sutej PV'ed 15-5!!

In an altitude site in Kenya, some fast sprint times--
Trayvon Bromell just edged Kenyan Ferdinand Omwurwa in the 100!
Bromell's 9.76 makes him 3rd A-T US, tied with 1 other, and 6th A-T World, also tied with 1 other!
Omwurwa got the Kenya National Record with his 9.77, making him 8th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
At twice the distance, Fred Kerley ran 19.76.
This makes him 14th A-T US, and 22nd A-T World, tied with 1 other!
In the C-E world, Kerley's mark, added to his 9.86 and 43.64, comes to 1:13.26.
He is 4th A-T World, and 3rd A-T US!

Another distance rarely run is the 300--at least OUTdoors!
That made it easy for Karsten Warholm, his 32.49 becoming Norway's NR!

In Russia, Ilya Shkurenyov scored 8429 points in the Decathlon!
And in Austria, EJ Obiena PV'ed 19-5.50, breaking his own National Record of the Philippines!

On to the ROADS!!
There was so much happening last year that I can't fit it all in one post!
So, following are results from Road Races shorter than the Marathon!!
I'll bring you those in another post!

The Cherry Blossom 10 Mile is always solid, and the 2021 version stayed the course, so to speak!
Edwin Kimutai took the Men's race in 45:45.
A bit of an upset in the Women's race saw Nell Rojas run 52:13, leaving Jenny Simpson in her shadow at 52:16.
I believe this was Jenny's longest race ever!!

The Berlin Half Marathon was won by Felix Kipkoech's 58:57.
That misses my World list by just 4 seconds!
Joyciline Jepkosgei took the Women's division in 65:16, beating the 65:21 of Nancy Rotich!
Ms Rotich is now 17th A-T World!

Races in Germany produced some solid results!
Jacob Kirop won a 5000 in 13:06.
Rhonex Kipruto took a 10K in 26:43, defeating the 26:56 by Tadese Worku.
And in a Half, Abel Kipchumba won in 58:48, making him 19th A-T World, tied with 2 others!

The Great North Half saw Marc Scott win in 61:22.
Big names took 2nd and 3rd--Ed Cheserek was 2nd in 61:31, while Galen Rupp was 3rd in 61:52.
Helen Obiri took the Women's race in 67:42 over the 67:48 of Elish McColgan!

The Copenhagen Half was taken by AmdewerkWalelegn in 59:10, while the Women's winner was T Gemuha (sp??), her time of 65:08 making her 11th A-T World.

The Fifth Avenue Mile "traditionally" ends the US Road season, other than the fall Marathons!
Jake Wightman took the 2021 version by a hair, his 3:50 nipping the 3:51's of (in finish order) Ollie Hoare, Jake Heyward, Sam Prakel, and Vincent Chattel.
The Women's race was close also, but not quite AS close as the Men.
Jemma Reekie won it in 4:22, with Nikki Hiltz 2nd in 4:23.
Shannon Osika nipped Kate Van Buskirk for 3rd, both running 4:24's.
Dani Jones was another second back in 5th!

In Women Only races, Senbere Teferi won the 5000 in World Record time of 14:29.
In the 10000, the athletic world saw the last of the magnificent talent of Agnes Tirop!!

Her 30:01 was also a World Record, and it beat the 30:17 by Sheila Kiprotich by a good margin!

And then her husband murdered her!

About a month after that race, Agnes Tirop is now running with the Angels!
Brutally killed by someone who was supposed to love her!

Since this horrible tragedy, the world has mourned her early death at Age 25!
Many people--elite athletes from around the world, as well as decent people who abhor the prevalence of violence against women--have donated to causes and groups organized to fight back against crimes like this.
Mary Ngugi has been at the forefront of this response!

But now the world of Athletics is missing the beautiful and gentle and loving and, yes, fierce presence of Agnes Tirop!

Why?
Such a simple question, with no good answers!

May you Rest in Peace, Agnes!
We miss you!

Van Damme & Weltklasse (& More)

Let's call it as I see it--the pair of titled meets SHOULD return to their status of Invitationals, and leave their DL status behind!
Alas, that ain't happening, so let's see what they produced DESPITE their designation as DL's!
(Hint--it's a LOT!!)

Mondo Duplantis continued his quest to break his own World Record in the Pole Vault, but missed!
He did get the Brussels Meet Record with his clearance of 19-10.50!
He left Chris Nilsen and KC Lightfoot back at 19-2.25, with Nilsen getting 2nd!
But it's KC who is now 13th A-T US, tied with 4 others!

Michael Cherry knocked his 400 PR down to a blazing 44.03, and got the MR!
This makes him 13th A-T US, and 23rd A-T World!
Kirani James ran 44.51 for 2nd!

Sifan Hassan nabbed the Meet Record in the Mile with her 4:14.74!
(She passed 1500 enroute in 3:56.69!)
Axumawit Embaye was well back, timed in 4:21.08 (1500 in 4:02.99).
Linden Hall got Australia's National Record in 3rd with 4:21.38!
Marta Perez was 4th in 4:21.58.
A couple of Americans came next--Elise Cranny's 4:21.90 makes her 9th A-T US, while Josette Norris's 4:22.71 makes her 10th A-T US!!
Esther Guerro ran 4:22.81 in 7th!

In the 5000, the 14:25.63 of Ejguyahu Taye took the W.
Veteran Helen Obiri was 2nd in 14:26.23!
Margaret Kipkemboi was next in 14:27.12.
This makes her 20th A-T World!
Lillian Regeruk edged Eva Cherono for 4th, 14:30.32 to 14:30.77!
Back in 9th, the US's Alicia Monson ran a PR of 14:42.56, making her 4th A-T US!!

The Women's HJ was solid!
Yaroslava Mahuchukh took the Victory with 6-7.50!
Mariya Lasitskene and Nicole McDermott both got over 6-6.75, with the Russian taking 2nd!

Fred Kerley took the 100 in 9.94.
Ferguson Rotich won the 800 in 1:43.81.
Stew McSweyn won the 1500 in 3:33.20!
Dan Stahl whirled the Discus out 227-4!
The Women's 200 saw Shericka Jackson push Dina Asher-Smith aside, 21.95 to 22.04!

Natoya Goule defeated the youngster Keely Hodgkinson in the 800, 1:58.09 to 1:58.18!
In 3rd came Jemma Reekie's 1:58.77!
Nadine Visser nipped Tobi Amusan in the 100H, with both timed in 12.69!
And Yaime Perez took the DT with her 218-1.

Before we move to Zurich, let's see what ELSE happened in other venues around this time!

In Roveretto, Michael Cherry eased a 400 in 44.55.
Marvin Bracy won the 100 in 9.98!

Elzan Bibic took the 3000 in a Serbia National Record of 7:39.45!
In the Women's 3K, Dani Jones took 4th in 8:41.01.
This makes her 19th A-T US!
And Catalin Tecucescu's 800 of 1:45.19 is the National Record of Romania!!

In Karlsruhe, Tina Sutej PV'ed 15-5.50 to defeat Iryna Zhuk's 15-3.50!
The meet in Chorzow was productive (or useful, as the British put it!).
Soufiane El Bakkali ran the 3000 in 7:37.18!
Added to his 3000SC time of 7:58.15, this adds to the Combined Events total of 15:35.33!
I believe this makes him 7th A-T World!

Ryan Crouser took the SP with his 73-5.50!
Joe Kovacs threw 72-2.25 in 2nd, while Tom Walsh's 71-1.50 took 3rd.
Chris Nilsen won the PV with 19-2.75!
Pawel Fajdek took the Hammer Throw with 261-2.
Johannes Vetter won the Javelin Throw with his 293-11.

Still in Chorzow, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce sped the 100 in 10.81.
Ariel Dongma beat Maggie Ewen in the SP, 63-4.75 to 63-4.25!
And Jemma Reekie won a good 1000 in 2:35.47.
Hirut Meshesha was 2nd in 2:35.74!
In 3rd was Dani Jones, whose 2:36.63 makes her 11th A-T US!

A meet in Italy saw some good marks!
Michael Norman ran 9.97 to win the 100.
Josh Awotunde's 72-2.25 beat the 70-11.75 of Zane Weir!!
The latter is Italian, despite the name!

Anzhelika Sidorova won the PV with a 15-5 clearance!
Shaneika Ricketts won the TJ with 48-4.50!
Daniel Stahl won another DT, measuring 226-8!

So much was great in Zurich that I don't know where to begin!

It wasn't the greatest meet ever, but it was solid!!
So I'll report the results in the order I took the notes!

Fred Kerley took the 100 in 9.87!
Andre De Grase made him sweat, turning in a time of 9.89!
Ronnis Baker ran 9.91, while in 4th, Trayvon Bromell ended in 9.96!

De Grasse made someone else sweat in the 200, him being Kenny Bednarek!
Bednarek won in 19.70, with the Canadian close in 19.72!
Fred Kerley was 3rd in 19.83!

(As an aside, for you older folks, does seeing times run by some Men in the 200--like the ones above--make you see those numbers as YEARS??  I do!  Thus, seeing these times reminds me of 1970, 1972, and 1983!!  LOL)

Michael Cherry is winning a lot of races!
He won here also, his 44.41 nipping the 44.42 of Kirani James!
Emmanuel Korir won the 800 in 1:44.56!
Tim Cheruiyot beat The Kid (Jacob Ingebrigtsen) in the 1500, 3:31.37 to 3:31.40!
The 3000SC was slow, but it's worth noting that Ben Kigen beat Soufiane El Bakkali--times were 8:17.45 and 8:17.70!

I won't be reporting the results of the 5000 because it was run on a 560 meter banked track!!
WTF??!!

Devon Allen and Ron Levy got the same time of 13.06 in the 110H, with Allen given the W.
Karsten Warholm tempo'ed to a 400H time of 47.35!

Gianmarco Tamberi won the HJ with 7-8!
And Mondo did it again!
His PV of 19-10.50 got him the Weltklasse Meet Record!
Sam Kendricks was 2nd, with Timur Morgunov 3rd, both clearing 19-5.50!
Pedro Pablo Pichardo took the TJ with 58-1.

Familiar names took the SP, Discus, and Javelin!
Ryan Crouser's 74-4.50 is the Weltklasse MR!
Joe Kovacs was 2nd with 73-1.75!
Dan Stahl's 218-1 took the platter, while Johannes Vetter's 292-4 took the spear!

The Women went wild also!
Elaine Thompson-Herah's 10.65 is the new Meet Record!
Dina Asher-Smith was well back with 10.87!
Ajia Del Ponto was next in 10.93, with Daryll Neita getting the same time in 4th!
Mujinga Kambundji ran 10.94 in 5th!

Shericka Jackson blasted a 21.81 to take the 200!
This makes her 20th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
Asher-Smith was well back in 22.19!

In a tight 400, Quanera Hayes beat Marileidy Paulino, 49.88 to 49.96!
In a separate race, Amalis Iuel broke her own National Record of Norway with her winning 51.64!

Keely Hodgkinson took the 800 in 1:57.98!
There was a tight race for 2nd, with Kate Grace taking the prize in 1:58.34!
She beat the 1:58.39 of Natoya Goule, and the 1:58.61 of Jemma Reekie!!
Another close race saw Faith Kipyegon's 3:58.33 beat the 3:58.55 of Sifan Hassan!
Third went to Josette Norris's 4:00.41.

In other distance races, Norah Tanui's 9:07.33 took the 3000SC!
Hyvin Kiyeng was 2nd in 9:08.55, while Courtney Frerichs was close in 3rd with 9:08.74!!
Helen Obiri won the 5000 in 14:29.68!
Ejayahu Taye took Silver with 14:30.30, while 3rd went to the 14:31.18 of Margaret Kipkemboi!

Tobi Amusan sprinted the 100H in 12.42!
This is Nigeria's NR, and makes her 22nd A-T World, tied with 2 others!
Nadine Visser got the Netherlands National Record with her 12.51 in 2nd!
Femke Bol's 52.80 gave her this prestigious Meet Record!!

The Vertical Jumps were amazing!
Mariya Lasitskene tied the Meet Record with her HJ of 6-8.75!
At 6-8 came Yaroslava Mahuchukh!
Australia's Nicole McDermott took 3rd with a good 6-7!

Anzhelike Sidorova went ABOVE (pun intended!) and beyond with her winning PV clearance of 16-5.25!!
Enroute, she cleared 16-1.25 and 16-3.25!!
This makes her 2nd A-T World!
She also gets the Age 30 Record!!
Ekaterina Stefanidi was far back, yet cleared 15-7.75 in 2nd!!

Ivana Spanovic Long Jumped 22-10!
Maggie Ewen won the SP with 63-8.50!
Valerie Allman won the DT with 227-0, and she beat Sandra Perkovic in the process, Perky getting 220-6!
Finally--for this report--we have Yulimar Rojas TJ'ing 50-8.50, and getting the Weltklasse Meet Record!!

More soon in this catch-up from last year!!
Hope you're enjoying the replay!

Lausanne & Paris DL's (& more!)

Did you read my post from yesterday--Reintroducing My Blog?
Then you know I'm ready to finish reporting results from the 2021 OUTdoor season--or everything that followed the Prefontaine meet!
Obviously, I can't fit all 37 pages of notes into one giant post!
So expect at least 5, and maybe 6 or 7, separate posts, all concentrated on the 2021 OUTdoor season!
When you see a mark reported as 17th place on one of my A-T lists, know that the place listed is AT THAT TIME, not as of now!!
So here goes, folks!!

I'll get to the DL's in a minute, but first some marks from the World Junior Championships!!

Antony Pesela got a WJ's Meet Record with his 400 of 44.58!
Emmanuel Wanyongji (sp??) got another with his 800 time of 1:43.76!!

The 110H at this meet use the US HS height, so measure Sasha Zhoya's phenomenal 12.72 against what we here in the States have done!
He also heat timed 12.93!!
BTW, he was 19 then!

South Africa got another MR with their 4X100 Relay time of 38.51.
Jamaica wasn't far behind with their 38.61.

Testosterone high athletes finished ahead of her, but the Win goes to Favour Ofili's 22.23 in the 200!
She also nabs the Meet Record!
Jamaica sped 42.94 for yet another MR in the Women's Sprint Relay!

Note that the Women's weights are the same throughout their careers, so the 235-0 that Siljo Kosonen threw in the Hammer is a legit "Pro" mark!!
And a Meet Record!

Some miscellaneous news--
Wilma Murto Pole Vaulted 15-2.25--a PR for her!
L Bonevaccio (sp??) broke his own Netherlands NR in the 400 with his 44.48!

And a few HS marks--
Karson Gordon (again sp??) got the Frosh Class Record in the Triple Jump with his 49-3.50!
Heather Abadie PV'ed 13-11.25!
This makes her 24th A-T HS, tied with 3 others!
And Ariel Pedigo scored 5493 points in the Heptathlon, making her 7th A-T HS, tied witth 1 other!!

Lausanne was an excellent meet, with a load of top tier marks!!
I'll list them in the order of my notes!

Kenny Bednarek sprinted 19.65 over the half lap!
BUT--the wind was 3.2!!
Marco Arop took the 800 in 1:44.50.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen took the 3000 in 7:33.06!

Should the news of the PV be that Chris Nilsen beat Sam Kendricks, both clearing 19-1?
OR that Mondo Duplantis ended just 4th, topping just 18-5.25??

Johannes Vetter's Javelin flew 290-6 for the W!
Ryan Crouser broke his own Meet Record with his SP toss of 74-10!
Tom Walsh took 2nd with 72-6.25!

The Women's 100 was the highlight event of the meet--both for the match-up and for the times!
Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce topped Elaine Thompson-Herah, 10.60 to 10.64!!!
For SAFP, this is the MR, and she breaks her own Age 34 Record, as well as making her 3rd A-T World!!
Her Combined Events total for the 100 and 200 is 32.39 (10.60 & 21.79), making her 5th A-T World!

Marileidy Paulino took the 400 in 50.40.
Femke Bol got the MR with her 400H time of 53.05!
Great Britain beat Switzerland in the 4X100, 42.44 to 42.47!

Mariya Lasitskene and Yaroslava Mahuchukh both HJ'ed 6-6, with Lasitskene winning!
Khaddi Sagnia got the win in the LJ with her 22-8.50!
And Yulimar Rojas took the TJ with a now "average" mark of 50-11.
She also had a windy 51-0.75!!

The Paris DL (Ooo La La!  LOL) was also top notch!

How about Fred Kerley and Kenny Bednarek BOTH running 19.79 in the 200??
Kerley got the W.
Mondo Duplantis got the Meet Record in the PV with his 19-8.50!
The Record broken??
None other than Sergei Bubka's 1985 MR!!
(Note the first 4 numbers of Mondo's new Record matches the year Bubka set it!!)

Wycliffe Kinyamal took the 800 in 1:43.94.
Ben Kigen took the 3000SC in 8:07.12.
Hansle Parchment beat Devon Allen in the 110H, 13.03 to 13.08!

Marileidy Paulino improved on her Lausanne time with a good 50.12 in the 400.
Ernest Obiena got the National Record of the Philippines with his PV height of 19-4.75!
ET-H got the Paris Meet Record with her 10.72 in the Century!
Danielle Williams beat Nadine Visser in the 100H, 12.50 to 12.58!

Sandra Perkovic took the Discus Throw with 216-9, with Valerie Allman taking 3rd with 211-9!
Nicole McDermott beat Mariya Lasitskene in the HJ, with both topping 6-6.
Last but not least, we have a FAST Women's 3000!!
Ejgeyahu Taye took top honors with her 8:19.52!
It's the MR, and Ethiopia's NR!
It's also the Age 21 Record, and makes her 5th A-T World!!
Margaret Kipkemboi took 2nd with 8:21.53!
She's now 11th A-T World!

Two Americans ran well.
Elise Cranny was 3rd in a quick 8:30.30!
This makes her 4th A-T US!
Alicia Monson ended just 8th, but her 8:40.08 makes her 15th A-T US!!

And more---
In Finland, Wilma Murto again PR'ed, her latest of 15-5.75 being the new Finland National Record!

Yalemzerf  Yehualaw ran what was thought to be a World Record in the Half Marathon!
BUT her 63:44 won't count, since the course turned out to be short!

Jordan Gray blew apart the American Record in the "new" Women's Decathlon.
Her score was a brilliant 8246!!

Though it was windy, Corrin Brewer got the High School Record with her 5698.
And it even makes the US list--in 16th place!!
(In the next few years, these records should be drastically revised!!)

I missed a mark from the World Juniors!
Udodi Onwudzurika (sp???) timed 20.21 in the 200 for 6th A-T HS!!

Finally, Veronica Vacea (sp?) PV'ed 13-4.
Not bad for a HS'er, right?
Well, this girl happens to be an EIGHTH GRADER!!
Wow!

And that's a wrap!
Hope you're enjoying this much belated recap of the end of the 2021 OUTdoor season!
Back with more soon!

Reintroducing My Blog

 Hello (again!), my dear readers!
It's been 194 days since my last post--covering the 2021 Prefontaine Classic!
Why so long?
I haven't been particularly ill, and I haven't died, nor retired from doing this blog!
I just wasn't motivated enough these past 6-plus months to do the necessary research (WORK!) needed to produce a blog worthy of the quality of past efforts!
Call it laziness, or just a loss of appetite for going through all the sources I use to find the marks I place on these pages!
Well, now I'm back (for better or for worse).
Maybe you've never read my 100's of posts--beginning December 9th, 2013!
Maybe you've found this blog boring!
Maybe T&F ain't your sport!
So, following are the rules, the sources, the guide that will help you enjoy this blog!!

This blog is concerned mainly with Records and Marks, from the core groups of World, American, Collegiate, and High School!

I also editorialize from time to time!
I mention some milestones--someone dying, getting married, having a baby, being injured, being banned!
I speak of related topics, like a book being published by a well known athlete!

I completely separate the seasons!!
I have TWO sets of Records and Lists--one for INdoors, and one for OUTdoors!
There are no "absolute" marks or records!!

I don't list times run in 1600 or 3200 meter races by US High Schoolers!
Nor do I list times converted from those distances!
My distances of choice are the One Mile and Two Mile!!

While WA has their rules, and T&FN has theirs, I have mine!
Thus, NO times run by Women who have a high testosterone rate are accepted or even mentioned by this blog, no matter the distance!!
So NO times run by Francine Nyonsaba, Christine Mboma, Caster Semenya, or Margaret Wambui are accepted or mentioned here!!
Nor do I list them as having "won" any races!!

As noted, I cover the core groups of World, US, Collegiate, and HS!
My main source of records and marks comes from my own self-compiled T&F Record Book, which is just over 700 pages!!

Miscellaneous covers Combined Events Records, meaning the best combined 100 & 200 person, for example!
Also in Miscellaneous are Place Marks for most events, including Relays and Walks!
Then there are the general records of World, Collegiate, and HS!
Finally, I have Class Records for the 8 years of HS and College!
If good enough, I'll also include the occasional 8th Grade Record!!

Age Records go from 17 to 40!
They are for individual years, not groups (such as Youth, Junior, or Masters).

Meet Records are kept for dozens of the "major" meets!

National Records are kept for many nations--including the United States!

Finally come my "DDD" lists!!
DDD stands for Double Dandy Dozen!
These are Top 24 All Time lists of performers!
Obviously separate lists for Men and Women, as well as INdoors and OUTdoors--so this is my biggest category!

I try to make your reading interesting and stimulating--even if you disagree or are unhappy with what I say, or how I say it!

So what's next??

I've just finished compiling the Records and Marks for the 2021 OUTdoor season--dating from where I left off--meaning everything that followed the Pre meet, up to the end of the year!
I have 37 pages of notes, ready to be put into sentences, and posted for your perusal!

It will take awhile, but I'll try to finish my 2021 OUTdoor posts in March!
Then I'll begin compiling the entire 2021-2022 INdoor season--which is almost finished!!
Those posts COULD come in April!!

Thanks for being a reader!
And thanks for being a fan of the greatest sport!!
