What are "DDD"'s?
They are my "Double Dandy Dozen" (DDD) lists of the Top 24 All-Time Performers in 4 categories--World, US, Collegiate, and HS.
I have completely separate DDD's for INdoor Top 24's, but this (& the next post) is all about the OUTdoor DDD's.
I will go event-by-event, listing the 24th place mark (minimum needed to make the list!), list some names who MIGHT make the list this year or next, and add any needed commentary.
I'm doing Men and Women in separate posts, due to length!
100
World (9.87) 9 marks left from 20th century! Andre De Grasse & Femi Ogunode likely to make it soon!
US (9.94) 9 marks from past century here too! Ameer Webb strong candidate!
Collegiate (10.01) Tevin Hester & Ronnie Baker!
HS (10.25)Two athletes from 1976 still on list!! Watch for Tyrese Cooper, but not till 2017??
200
World (19.85) Again, De Grasse & Ogunode! Long shot might be HS'er Noah Lyles!! Webb's tied with 3 others at bottom of list! 400 man LaShawn Merritt just made the list!! Tommie Smith still on list in 21st from 1968!!
US (19.97) Again, watch for Lyles here too! Will Bromell run the 200 soon? Smith on this list too, from '68! Here, he's 12th A-T!!
Collegiate (20.10) Hester. Since they're not going Pro, both Lyles brothers can make it in 2017.
HS (20.58) If he wasn't injured, I'd put Josephus Lyles as a candidate! Ty Cooper for sure!! Dwayne Evans still on list from 1976!
400
World (44.17) Mark was 44.24 just 2 years ago! 7 athletes from '14 & '15 on list--none yet dated 2016! David Verburg & Bralon Taplin strong candidates. If only Usain Bolt liked the 400!!! Might be TWO years away, but young Mr Cooper can get there! Lee Evans & Larry James on here from '68!
US (44.34) Besides Evans & James, Wayne Collett & Fred Newhouse from '72 on this list!! Cooper should make it, but maybe not until 2018! Both Lyles brothers! Verburg & Taplin.
Collegiate (44.62) Still believe Michael Cherry has WORLD Class potential! Next year, watch for both the Lyles!
HS (45.71) Noah's not on here yet! Neither is Cooper. Oldest mark is from 1979, with 7 more from the 80's!
800
World (1:42.82) Four of these marks still date from London OG race!! IAAF Prez Coe high on list from '81! If Nick Symmonds can reach his '12 form, has a chance! Duane Solomon is 24th!
US (1:44.54) Donovan Brazier & Shaquille Walker! Jim Ryun on here from 1966! Dave Wottle from '72! Also Rick Wohlhuter from '74!!
Collegiate (1:45.3) Last place is Byron Dyce from 1969!! But Ryun's 1:44.2 leads the list from '66!! This is a strong 800 year in this category, so watch for probable changes to come! Hector Hernandez?
HS (1:48.52) Four sub-1:49's this year so far, but just Mike Slagowski's 1:48.36 makes the list! Will Drew Hunter and the other 2 make it also? Two left from the '70's!
1500 & 1 Mile (NO 1600's, or times converted from them!!)
World (3:29.66 & 3:48.50) Nick Willis is the caboose in the 1500. Matthew Centrowitz should make both lists! 9 marks date from '13, '14 & '15 on 1500 list. Asbel Kiprop is 24th on Mile list & should move up! (To 1st??)
US (3:34.15 & 3:52.42) Galen Rupp is 24th & Garrett Heath is 23rd on 1500 list! Will former (Grant Fisher & Matthew Maton) & present (Slagowski & Hunter) HS'ers make this list by end of 2017? Christian Soratos?
Collegiate (3:37.33 & 3:57.6) With NCAA due to race Mile more next year, 24th could get a LOT tougher in '17! Fisher & Maton still to make lists! Hunter & Slagowski in '17?? 5 marks on 1500 list from '70's! MUCH worse on Mile list--FIVE from '60's, with EIGHT more from '70's!!
HS (3:45.74 & 4:02.70) If HS'ers were timed enroute during fast Mile races, the 1500 list would be much tougher to make!! But only some do! Ryun & Gerry Lindgren on 1500 list from 1964, Lindgren on Mile list from '64, while Ryun's best dates from '65. Marty Liquori & Tim Danielson also on Mile list from '60's! 9 Mile marks from this decade!
3000 & 2 Mile (No Collegiate lists, and NO 3200's, or times converted from them!)
World (7:29.00 & 8:13.47) That 7:29 is equal to about 8:02 for the Deuce, so latter list needs drastic revision! Newest 3K marks are from 2011. Nothing since!! Only Mo Farah's 8:07.85 from '14 from this decade!!
US (7:40.78 & 8:24.14) 7:40 equal to about 8:13! Again, drastic revision possible! When Ed Cheserek becomes a US citizen...!! Centro can make both lists!
HS (8:13.27 & 8:46.99) Obviously, if I included 1600 & 3200 conversions, Deuce list might be LOTS different! Slagowski & Austin Tamagno might make the lists! A few others close! Watch the Brooks PR & NBN races!
5000 & 10000
World (12:51.35 & 26:49.90) Six athletes got their marks here from Paris DL race of 2012! But newest mark is Edwin Soi's 24th placer from 2013!! Farah SHOULD be on 5K list, but isn't! Latest marks are 2 years old on 10K list! Geoff Kamworor? Maybe even Ben True??
US (13:13.49 & 27:41.54) Two from 1982 on 5K list--Centro's Dad & Alberto Salazar!! Bruce Bickford, from '85, brings up the rear in the shorter race! Craig Virgin's 1980 10K still 11th on list!! Again, when King Ches becomes a US citizen....!! Add some young Collegians, like Fisher & Maton, as well as Colby Gilbert!!
Collegiate (13:25.38 & 27:58.3) Henry Rono's Soph Class record (when he was 26!!) heads the 5K list (& is 16th on 10K DDD!). A few Collegians close to 5K list, but I doubt they'll run fast at Regionals or NCAA's! Ches NOT on 10K list!! One from 2016 on each list!
HS (14:16.2 & 30:30.2) PLEASE---someone bring top HS'ers together for Time Trial races!! 13 athletes have marks on 5K list from 1980 or earlier!! MUCH worse on 10K list--19 marks from 1985 or earlier!!
Marathon (Only World & US lists!!)
World (2:04:50) Amazing transformation!! OLDEST mark is from 2008!! 21 date from 2011 to 2016!!
Berlin, Chicago, NY & Fukuoka still to come!! (Rio probably slow--comparatively!!) Will Rupp make this list?? Farah?
US (2:10:26) ELEVEN marks date from 1979-1983 period! And that's with Boston included!! Puskedra's 2015 Chicago race is 23rd on list! Again, Rupp should make it! Other track guys can do it--IF they run the distance!!
3000SC
World (8:04.95) Simon Vroeman's Age 36 record is 24th on list! Five marks date from 1997--only ones from 20th century!
US (8:19.98) That slowest mark is from 1986, but Doug Brown's 8:19.29 is from 1978! Will the Trials race produce some changes?
Collegiate (8:26.83) Over half the list dates from '70's & '80's!! Again, Rono's SOPH Class record (at Age 26!!!) heads this list!! Mason Ferlic less than 2 seconds from 24th!
HS (9:11.24) Still amazing, to me, that Cheserek holds Soph Class record with his 9:00.11 from 2011. What could he have done if he'd pursued this event the next 2 years of HS?? Frosh Class record just fell, but it's just 9:38.00, so long way to this list!!
110H (HS list is for 39 inch hurdles!)
World (13.02) Six on list from 2014-2015. Twenty marks are sub-13! Renaldo Nehemiah's 12.93 from '81 still 9th A-T!!
US (13.16) Devon Allen is that 13.16 mark! He should improve! Nehemiah & Greg Foster date from '81!
Collegiate (13.36) Nehemiah's leader from 1979 & Foster's 7th placer from '78! 2nd, 3rd & 4th placers all from 2014!
HS (13.46) 25 on list, with final 4 at 13.46! Why isn't Grant Holloway on this list yet??
400H
World (47.72) Nicholas Bett should make this list! But top 6 marks date from previous century! This event in a slump! But some young ones running fast times! (Jaheel Hyde?)
US (48.24) Drought here too! Newest mark from 2013! Norman Grimes still in HS, but maybe in 2017 or 2018?
Collegiate (48.61) Four on list from 1982 & earlier! Just 3 from this decade!
HS (50.61) Bob Bornkessel's 49.8 from 1968 still 7th place!! Taylor McLaughlin (Sydney's older brother) is 16th on list!! Will Holloway make this list?
HJ
World (7-9.75, or 2.38) 25 on list, with last 10 at 2.38!! Five date from 2014, "Year of the HJ"!! Erik Kynard can make this list! But 2015 (& 2016??) slump may slow list revision!! Oldest mark is from 1984!
US (7-7.75, or 2.33) As with World DDD, 25 on this list, with 7 tied at 2.33! Two HS'ers at 7-4 or higher this year. Promising!!
Collegiate (7-7, or 2.31) 27 on this list, with final 7 at 7-7 (Lucky numbers??!!). Dwight Stones, from 1976, one of those at 7-7!! Franklin Jacobs also on list, from 1978! Those 2 HS'ers--next year??
HS (7-3.50, or 2.22) As already noted, 2 additions from 2016 here! However, next "newest" is from 2010!! 16 are from last century!
LJ
World (27-10.25, or 8.49) Only one 28 footer from this decade! Last 29 footer was in 1991. However, a slight comeback seems near, as 3 marks date from last 2 years! 25 on this list also, with 4 tied at bottom!
US (27-6.25, or 8.39) Some movement here too, as 4 marks are from 2014-2016! Bob Beamon's 1968 leap will be on this list forever!!
Collegiate (26-11.75, or 8.22) Ralph Boston was born in 1939!! His 1961 mark still ranks 18th, tied with 3 others! The 24th placer is from this year! He'd better add a few inches if he wants to remain here awhile!
HS (25-8.75, or 7.84) Holloway's on the list, but just at the tail end (tied with 1 other). Two marks from the late '60's!!
TJ
World (58-3, or 17.75) Will Claye is one of 3 at 58-3 at the bottom! But Christian Taylor, Pablo Pichardo, and Teddy Tamgho are 3 of 5 at 59 feet or farther! Joao De Oliveira's 58-8.25 is from 1975!
US (56-4.75, or 17.19) Four athletes share the lowest mark, with 25 on list! All of those are from the 20th century!! Five marks are from 2013 onward. No one not already on list seem to have potential to make 56-5!
Collegiate (55-8.25, or 16.97) Ron Livers, Willie Banks, and Nate Cooper are from the late '70's! Leading 2016 mark is 8 inches shy of list!!
HS (52-5.75, or 15.99) Except for Ja Mari Ward's 53-7.50 this year, the newest mark is from 2010, with 3 dating from the '70's, with 18 from 2000 and before!!
PV
World (19-5.50, or 5.93) Sam Kendricks just reached 19-5, so he's a prime candidate for this list!! Shawn Barber's one of 3 at the bottom rung, and needs to break out of his slump to remain here! When will Renaud Lavillenie break Sergey Bubka's OUTdoor WR?? He's still 3.50 inches short!! How many years before Adam Hague & Mondo Duplantis make this list??
US (19-0.25, or 5.80) There are 32 on this list, with NINE tied at 19-0.25!! Devin King is climbing the ladder, but still 4 inches short! Audie Wyatt's another one to watch! Seven of those 9 at 19-0.25 date from 2000 & earlier!!
Collegiate (18-8.25, or 5.70) Just 24 on this Top 24 list, but final 7 are tied at the 5.70 figure, with King being one of them! Just 8 have reached 19 feet or higher! Wyatt next to join??
HS (17-6.50, or 5.35) Ten on list from this decade, with 2 of those 2016 marks! So far!! Duplantis still 2.50 inches short of his INdoor best! Two Duplantis's, two Dial's, and 2 Bray's make this list as Father & Son acts!!
SP (HS list is for 12 pounder!)
World (72-0.75, or 21.96) Much more "modern" than the Women's list, but 13 still remain from previous century! Six are from this decade! Ryan Crouser should make this list soon! Maybe Kurt Roberts & O'Dayne Richards too!
US (70-10.50, or 21.60) Randy Matson remains here from 1967!! And he was in College then!! Crouser & Roberts are soon to join!
Collegiate (67-7, or 20.60) Matson's mark still ranks 8th A-T!! Seven from this decade, but none from 2016 so far!
HS (70-6, or 21.49) Before 2016 began, you could still make this list with a Put of less than 70-0!! Not now!! FOUR guys made it in 2016!! So far! For the Men, this is the "Year of the SP" for HS'ers!! Not only that, but Jordan Geist has gotten closer than any other 11th Grader to Michael Carter's iconic HSR of 81-3.50!! Can he?? Really--can he (in 2017)??
DT (Again, HS weight Discus!)
World (229-4, or 69-90) Eleven are from 1980 to 1988 period! Piotr Malachowski's 235-8 from 2013 more an anomaly than a trend!
US (218-11, or 66.73) Half of this list are from the '70's & '80's!! Sam Mattis hasn't approached his early season 221-3, but he's the first to make this list since 2011.
Collegiate (211-9, or 64.55) Matson makes this list, also from 1967!! The 2 tied at 211-9 are from 1982 and 1995!
HS (211-5, or 64.45) One from 2016 already! Might be more. Tripp Piperi, one of those 70+ SP guys, has reached 204!
JT (HS list is with Pro implement!)
World (289-11, or 88.37) Seven marks date from 2013 forward! None dated this year--yet! No current American is close to making this list! Once the bottom mark is eliminated, list jumps to 291-2!!
US (263-1, or 80.19) Six marks are from 2013 forward! Two Crousers make this list!!
Collegiate (258-6, or 78-80) Two from 2016!! Another 2 from 2015! Five of bottom 6 are from the 20th century!
HS (222-3, or 67-75) Eleven date from 2010 onward! Could add to total by August 31st!
HT (HS list is for HS implement!)
World (270-11, or 82.59) Just above 24th are 3 tied at 271-1. Only Krisztian Pars & Pawel Fajdek date from this decade! Lance Deal's US record isn't on this list!!
US (243-11, or 74.35) There's 26 on this list, with 3 tied at the lowest mark, including Ed Burke from 1984! Rudy Winkler finally made this list!!
Collegiate (241-4, or 73.57) Three guys have marks from this year!! Balasz Kiss's 268-10 CR is a full ELEVEN FEET ahead of 2nd best!! Winkler has this year and next to close the gap!
HS (230-1, or 70.13) Manny Silverio's mark dates from 40 years ago! Nine marks date from 2013 onward! The 2 bottom marks are from the '90's!
Decathlon (HS list is with Pro implements, hurdle heights, etc!)
World (8654) Damian Warner made this list in 2015. Besides Ashton Eaton's WR improvement, Warner's was the only mark added last year! Can Grenada's Lindon Victor add 208 more points to his last 1000 (!!) point improvement he made recently?? Wouldn't bet against it!
US (8268) Bill Toomey's 8309 score dates from 1969, while BRUCE Jenner's mark is from 1976!! Two unrelated Williams's--Harrison & Devon--might be the next to join this list!
Collegiate (8116) Speaking of Devon, he's in 24th place here!!
HS (6860W) I normally depend on Jack Shepard's HS Track book to separate the "adult" Dec from the HS Dec, so this list MIGHT not be entirely accurate!! That said, there doesn't seem to be much progress here! Most of the list has marks with a year beginning with 19!!
I'll just list the 24th place marks for the Relays--no commentary!
World (38.47 & 3:01.12) (For Nations only! No club, All-Star, or College teams!)
Collegiate (39.12 & 3:02.47 & 9:40.12 for the DMR)
Sorry for the length, but I didn't want to make this a 3 or 4 post monster!!
Women's DDD's are next---a few hours from now!!
