It maybe began in the capital city of Qatar, but it didn't end there!
The first Diamond League meet of the Olympic year was good, even great in some events, but became merely the steppingstone to a series of top-end marks in a series of disparate meets spread around the globe!
Four Meet Records were broken in Doha, with the Women scoring 3 of them!
In the TJ, it was the battle that set the stage.
Round 2 saw Caterine Ibarguen get the 1st MR with her 48-5.50.
But Round 3 gave that Record to INdoor sensation Yulimar Rojas with her 48-6.25!
That was also the Venezuela National Record!
Then Rojas got a windy 48-11.50.
That was followed by Ibarguen's winner, and final MR, a 49-4.25!
WHEW!
BTW, Rojas missed the Age 20 record by just 1.25 inches with that 48-6.25!
It didn't get a MR, but for Tia Brooks, her Shot Put PR of 63-11 (after an earlier round PR of 63-9.75!) did give her the victory!
She remains 6th A-T US!
Sandi Morris got both an OUTdoor PR of 15-10 in the PV--AND her first DL win!!
And the Doha Meet record!
She moves from 3rd A-T US to 2nd, tied with 1 other.
On the World list, she moves from 11th to 6th, where she's tied with 3 others!
She missed 3 times at 16-2!!
Nicole Buchler reached 15-8.25, breaking her own National Record of Switzerland!!
She's now 15th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
Two sprint races gave up the other 2 Doha MR's.
Tori Bowie tore up the track in just 10.80 seconds to defeat Dafne Schippers, who wasn't far behind, running 10.83!
In getting the MR, Bowie matched her 2014 PR!
In 3rd was Super Vet Veronica Campbell-Brown, timed in 10.91.
Murielle Ahoure was 4th in 11.02.
Wind was just 0.7.
After a 19.91 recently, Ameer Webb sped 200 meters in 19.85, making him a serious contender for the Podium in Rio!
It's the Doha MR, and moves him from 20th A-T US to 13th, tied with 1 other.
He also becomes 23rd A-T World, tied with 3 others!
Alonzo Edward was a far back 2nd in 20.06.
Wind was 1.9.
In one of the "feature" events, the Women's 3000, Almaz Ayana took care of a class field, running a non-PR 8:23.11.
The parade that followed included Mercy Cherono's 8:26.38, Gelete Burka's 8:28.29, and Vivian Cheruiyot's 8:31.86.
Good, but couldn't touch last year's wild ride!
Other decent Doha marks included--
Omar McLeod's 13.05 in the 110H (1.4) beating Hansle Parchment's 13.10, and in 6th, Aries Merritt's fastest since his kidney transplant, a 13.37!
She-Man Caster Semenya's 1:58.26 in the 800, where Eunice Sum was 3rd in 1:59.74, Chanelle Price was 5th in 2:01.05, and Molly Ludlow was 9th in 2:02.64.
(More on Semenya in a later post! But please check out some comments about "her" in the Doha thread on the T&FN Message Board!!)
Erik Kynard HJ'ing a World leading 7-7.75, while Qatar hero Mutaz Barshim could reach just 7-5 way back in 7th!!
Sunette Viljoen's JT of 213-8.
LaShawn Merritt's okay (OK in light of his recent 200 PR of 19.78!!) 400 of 44.41, topping Michael Cedeno's 44.68.
Piotr Malachowski's DT of 223-2, which defeated Belgium's Phillip Milanov's 220-8.
The latter mark breaks his own National Record!
Consesius Kipruto won the 3000SC in 8:05.13.
Jairus Birech was 2nd in 8:08.28, while flamboyant Ezekiel Kemboi was way back in 12th in 8:31 and change!
Elidh Doyle (formerly Child!) took the 400H in 54.53, with Kemi Adekoye 2nd in 54.87.
Christian Taylor TJ'ed over 3 FEET less than last year, winning in 56-6.50.
Finally (from Doha) was the UNDER-whelming 1500 win by Asbel Kiprop, his 3:32.15 JOG taking the measure of a class field!
For the rest of it, I'll go by-event-group, starting with the Field Events!
Jenn Suhr is apparently over her calf problem!
After her recent 15-9.75 (See earlier post!), she backed that up with a win in 15-7.
Second was "comebacking" Kaitlyn Petrillose, who reached 14-9!
Logan Cunningham PV'ed 18-8.25.
Katie Viuf got over 14-5.25, defeating Desiree Freier's 14-0.50 and Tori Weeks's 13-7.75!
Chris Nilsen's 18-0 PV moved him from 22nd A-T HS, tied with 3 others, all the way to 8th, tied with 1 other!!
Bobby Colantonio got a big PR in the HT, his 250-9 moving him from 7th A-T HS to 5th!!
Gwen Berry won the Jamaica Invite's HT with her non-PR of 242-2.
Rudy Winkler moved up the lists with his HT PR of 246-5.
That makes him 12th A-T Collegiate!
And it gets him on the US list too, in 17th!
Michael Lihrman's 241-9 also wasn't his best.
Haley Showalter's 207-3 was good for the Wisconsin Frosh!
Rodney Brown threw the Discus 209-11.
Jason Young's 215-5 was better, but also a non-PR!
Hannah Carson continued her climb up the DT charts with her first 200+ throw, as her 203-4 makes her 12th A-T Collegiate, and 20th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
She also threw the Javelin 178-9!
Kelsey Card improved her SP out to 60-10.75, moving her from 21st A-T Collegiate to 7th, tied with 1 other!
It also makes her 21st A-T US!
She added a non-PR Discus Throw of 202-5!
Inika McPherson, off the banned list, HJ'ed 6-2.
But in Osaka's IWC meet, Liz Patterson HJ'ed 6-4, missing my US DDD by 0.25 inches!
Andrea Geubelle is having her best TJ year in awhile, her 45-8.50 moving her from 23rd A-T US, tied with 2 others, to 20th!
She also had a windy 45-10!
Czech Jakub Vadlejah threw the Javelin a World leading 284-8.
An important note!
Jessica Ennis-Hill has withdrawn from the Gotzis Heptathlon due to an injury!
She said she's still bothered by an achilles problem!
Alexa Efraimson won her first International race, the Jamaica Invite's 1500, her final 200 sprint moving her from Leah O'Connor's shoulder to a 20 meter win!
Her time was 4:08.37, while O'Connor timed 4:11.45.
Brenda Martinez won the Oxy 800 in 2:01.51, looking strong!
Treniere Moser had a decent double in the Oregon Twilight meet, times of 2:05.08 (defeating a tired-looking Mary Cain's 2:08.50!!) and 4:13.59.
In the latter race, she barely held on to the win, as Katie Rainsberger became the THIRD HS'er to reach elite HS status in the 1500 this year, as she sprinted hard over the final 300, ALMOST catching the 34 year old Moser with her 4:14.20!!
The future Duck moves from 13th to 5th on the A-T HS list!
A FORMER Duck (and former HS stud!), Jordan Hasay, took 3rd in 4:16.67!
The Wheel keeps turning!!
(Any Meet Director who fails to invite Rainsberger, Ella Donaghu, Christine Aragon, as well as Kate Murphy, Sammy Watson, and maybe Stephanie Jenks and Destiny Collins to go after the HSR in the Mile (Polly Plumer's 4:35.24 from 1982!) should be FIRED!! Just my humble opinion! LOL)
Another HS stud was defeated!
Drew Hunter ran a solid 800 time of 1:48.64.
But he finished behind Brandon McGorty's 1:48.58!
In 3rd was Alex Lomong's 1:48.67!
This was ONE RACE!!
The 3 missed my DDD by 0.06, 0.12, and 0.15 seconds, respectively!!
(And don't forget Michael Slagowski's recent 1:48.70! See an earlier post!)
Oh, and Hunter added a 3200 time of 8:43.18!
Weini Kelati, the 19 year old HS Junior (!!), won a 3200 in 9:53.40.
A New Hampshire Collegiate Junior, Laura Rose Donegan, ran the 3000SC in 9:49.16.
Nevada Mareno won a 1500 in 4:23.47.
If you remember, she ran a good INdoor time at the beginning of the the INdoor season last year!
Robby Andrews took an 800 in 1:47.90.
Remember the tale of Portland's Soph Lauren LaRocco, who ran her 1st 10K at the Stanford Invite in 33:15, PR'ing TWICE in the 5000 enroute, breaking her previous best of 17:19 from 2015??
Well, now she's got a new 5000 PR NOT attached to a 10K--as she won an Oxy race in 15:58.31!
Erik Sowinski won an 800 in 1:45.93.
Matthew Maton's flowing locks didn't slow him down, as he won the Eugene 1500 in 3:42.68.
Almost forgot!
Ed Cheserek LOST again!!
This time, an unknown from Lewis & Clark STATE (in Montana!!), Sam Atkin, beat him in the Eugene 3000, 7:56.70 to 7:57.26!
And he OUT-KICKED the "King"!!
Long ago and far away, Sylvia Mosqueda was the Collegiate Record holder in the 10K, time of 32:28.57!
(I saw her run it, in the NCAA meet in Eugene in 1988!)
Well, in one of the Oxy 1500 sections, she ran 4:50.12.
Not bad for someone born in 1966!!
Speaking of "ancients", another who ran decently at Oxy was former 110H (and Pro football!!) stud Willie Gault, who's even older--around 55 or 56!!
He doubled in the 100 and 200, times of 11.30 and 23.24!!
At 55???
I missed noting some National Records!
Alexi Pappas's 31:46.85 at PJ shattered the NR of Greece!!
Juliet Chekwel got Uganda's NR with her 31:37.99.
Ali Saaed's 31:10.25 is the NR of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
And Lalita Babar's 9:27.09 broke her own NR of India in the 3000SC!
Moving to the sprints, Wayde Van Niekerk timed 44.11 at altitude in a South Africa 400.
In Eugene, Mike Berry's 45.56 took down Ashton Eaton's 45.78 in the one lapper!
The Jamaica meet saw Francena McCorory win the 400 in 50.52, with Novlene Williams-Mills 2nd in 50.87, and Stephanie McPherson next in 51.20.
The Men's race was won by Javon Francis's 44.85 over Vernon Norwood's 45.00, Kevin Borlee's 45.17, and Deon Lendore's 45.40!
Gil Roberts had a solid double in Oxy, times of 44.88 and 20.68 (1.3).
Justin Gatlin won easily in Osaka, cruising a 10.02.
Ginnie Crawford won the 100H in 12.91.
Jamaica's sprints were mostly wind-aided, but they were FAST too!
The best was Elaine Thompson's 10.71 (!!!) in the 100, helped by a 2.4 breeze!
English Gardner was 2nd in 10.85.
Kemar Bailey-Cole won the NON-windy 100 in 10.01, with Mike Rodgers 2nd in 10.03.
Shaunae Miller's 22.14 WOULD have tied her PR, except for the wind!!
Asafa Powell ran a legal 200 in 20.45.
Wallace Spearmon ran a 200 in 20.51.
Brianna Rollins used a 2.9 wind to push her to a 100H time of 12.52, with Queen Harrison following in 12.54, and Jamaica's Danielle Williams next in 12.55!
The longer Hurdle races were taken by Janieve Russell's 54.61 and Jeff Gibson's 48.96.
In the Oxy 400H, Kori Carter was a dismal 5th in 57.49!
Carmelita Jeter ran 11.42 (minus-0.9 wind!) and 23.49 at Oxy.
The Longhorn Invite gave windy 100 times of 10.00 and 10.97 to Trayvon Bromell and Alexandria Anderson, respectively!
Anderson added a strongly windy (4.7!) 22.53 in the 200!
Christina Manning ran a windy 100H in 12.67.
Nia Ali had a legal 100H time of 12.78.
And Phyllis Francis doubled in the Eugene 100 and 200, times of 11.34 and 22.77, though the 100 had an aiding 3.4 wind!
I'll close this "epic" (in length, at least!! LOL) post with some Road action, both of which ended just a few hours ago!!
The Prague Marathon was won in good, but not record, times of 2:07:24 and 2:24:46 by Lawrence Cherono and Lucy Karimi, respectively!
Felix Kandie was 2nd in the Men's race in 2:08:14, while Purity Rionoripo was 2nd in her race, time of 2:25:00.
A 3-time XC skier in Winter Olympic Games--Eva Vrabcova--ran her FIRST marathon, and was first Czech--so she goes to Rio--her FOURTH OG, albeit her first SUMMER Games!!
Her time was a quite decent 2:30:10!!
The IAAF Walks in Rome were historic, in one way!
A Woman took part in an IAAF-Walk for the first time ever!
Erin Taylor-Talcott, an American, Walked 4:51:08--a non-PR--over the 50K course!
She finished first in the Women's division (sic!!), but was 40th overall, as 39 Men finished ahead of her!
(About 25 other men either DNF'ed or were DQ'ed!)
She was on pace for a 4:37 at halfway, but faded over the last 25K.
Alex Schwazer won the race JUST after his drug ban ended (!!), time of 3:39:00.
Second was Jared Tallent in 3:42:36!
The Chinese dominated the 20K's, winning both.
Maria Michta-Coffey DNF'ed for some unknown reason!
Her OT race is in late June!!
Chinese Walkers also took both Junior 10K's!!
And that is IT, folks!!
The Collegiate Conferences--among other goodies---are next!!
Great report as always. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI noticed today that there is a series of appreciative comments about you on the T&FN forum. It's about time! And there should be more, but it's a good start.
Those who have bashed you there should hang their heads in shame. I am proud to have been one of your first and most enthusiastic supporters.
This blog is my favorite T&F site on the internet. It greatly enhances my knowledge and enjoyment of the sport. I offer you my gratitude and encouragement to continue your fine work.
Thanks (again!!) for your kind words!
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen the MB for a few hours--either sleeping or (now) watching Flotrack's livestream of the Heps (Ivy League) Champs!
I did see one comment yesterday that was good!
Will check it out later!
Now you see why I wanted to wait a bit to post!
Doha was good, but not the best!
Shanghai, Rabat, and Pre come next in the DL line!
Oh, BTW, I tweeted to @SFATFXC (Stephen A Austin T&F) that Demi Payne was greatly missed in their Conference meet yesterday, and saying I hoped she'd be back soon!
They tweeted back that she WILL be at the Trials, and that they'll be there too, cheering her on!!
GREAT news!!
Thanks for getting the good news. I'll be cheering for Demi too. I hope she can have a full season, not just the Trials. In technical events, frequent competition is a big help. Demi is quite new to the big heights she is jumping now, and she needs lots of meets to become consistent.
ReplyDeleteSandi Morris is doing the right thing -- jumping a lot. So is Jenn -- jumping more than ever and also becoming more consistent. Demi needs to get out there too, the more the better. Of course I know she had a minor injury -- at least I hope it was minor -- but I'm looking forward to seeing her back out on the competition circuit ASAP.
Have you seen the new issue of T&FN yet?
ReplyDeleteThere's a GREAT photo of Demi's pole breaking---smoke or chalk exploding from it in a cloud!!
Her thumb was dislocated in that accident.
BTW, GH himself thinks that's one of, if not THE best T&FN photo in a long time, if not ever!!
I agree!
As a PHOTO---not merely a photo about a T&F star!!
P.S.
ReplyDeleteGH says they wanted to put that photo on the cover, but the chalk cloud obscured their logo, so decided against it, and placed it inside!
