NCAA XC, Class Records, 3 WR Attempts

Got lots to write about, so let's get on it!

Kate Avery and Ed Cheserek dominated the Individual races at the NCAA XC Championships today.
(Michigan State won the Women's race, while Colorado won the Men's.)

Avery led almost from the start, expanded her lead to over 10 seconds, and won by 8 in the time of 19:32.
A surprise 2nd was Wisconsin's Sarah DiSanza, in 19:40.
Emma Bates finished 3rd.
Top Freshmen girls were Elise Cranny (12th), a surprising Alice Wright in 17th, then Bethan Knights in 25th.

The Men's race was entirely different.
A HUGE "lead pack" of maybe 100 (!!) jogged the first 5K in 15:31.
At 8K, King Ches decided to run, and while he continually looked back to see where teammate Eric Jenkins was (and cheer him on!!), Cheserek won decisively in 30:20 (14:49 last 5K).
Jenkins did finish 2nd for a 1-2 Ducks finish, but Colorado easily won the team title!
Oregon was back in 5th or 6th!

Before I get to the Class Records section of this post, I need to report some VERY early announcements of Indoor World Record attempts, set to happen at 3 different meets by 2 different athletes.
Last year, the first announcements of record attempts weren't made until around December 10th!

At the Armory Track Invitational (NYC) on January 31st, Galen Rupp will try to break the World Record in the Two Mile run!
Also at that meet, Mary Cain will go after Meseret Defar's "World Junior Record" of 9:34.03 in a Two Mile also!
(To my mind, "WJR's" don't exist!  Thus, I see her going after Defar's Age 18 record (that 9:34.03!).  And I'm REALLY hoping she goes after the American Record as well, Regina Jacob's 9:23.38!)
Jordan Hasay will join Cain in the Two Mile, while Matthew Centrowitz will run a leg on an International  DMR team!

Genzebe Dibaba said she wants TWO World Records this season (as opposed to her THREE last year!!).
She'll go after Defar's 14:24.37 5000 at the Stockholm meet.
Then she'll run the One Mile in Birmingham, that record being Doinia Melinte's 4:17.14.
(Her 3:55.17 last year is worth about 4:11 or 4:12 for the Mile!)

Also announced for the Armory meet are Chaunte Lowe and Will Claye.

The Hilton Garden Invitational (Winston-Salem NC), also on January 31st, a Men's and Women's "Camel City Mile" race will be held.
The Men's race features Will Leer, Leo Manzano, and Cory Leslie.
The Women's race will have Shannon Rowbury, Morgan Uceny, Heather Kampf, Sara Vaughn, and Stephanie Garcia.
There will also be featured 800 and 3000 meter races.
Phoebe Wright and Richard Jones have been announced for the 800's so far!

Now for my report on which Class Records might be broken (or challenged) this Indoor season!
Following are the Class Records for High Schoolers.
I'll just list the records (in the usual order of events), but no names or dates.
I'll do the Boys first, then the Girls

A few comments.
The 9th Grade 1500 is VERY weak, due to the Mile mark not being timed at the 1500 enroute.
That 4:15.13 is worth a 1500 in about 3:58.
That 5000 9th Grade record (by Lukas Verzbickas) is one of the best 9th Grade records.
The 6-8 HJ is probably the weakest, and thus most easily beaten!
Also weak are the TJ and PV in that class.
Note how slow the 10th Grade 5000 is!  Should easily be broken!
Those 11th and 12th Grade WT records could last MANY years!!

Some athletes who could challenge some of those records!

Quincy Hall ran the 400 in 46.71 OUTdoors this year as an 8th Grader, and could get the 9th Grade mark of 48.76.
Lane (Don't have 1st name!) could get the Soph WT mark of 75-0.50.
Eleventh Graders who could challenge records are:
Bobby Colontonio (WT)
Grant Holloway (60H)
Noah Lyles (200)
Ward (Don't have 1st name!) (TJ)
Josephus Lyles (I think he's Noah's twin brother--same school, same class!) (400)
Austin Tamagno (1500, 1 Mile, 3000, 2 Mile, 5000)
Andrew Hunter (3000, 2 Mile, 5000)
And here's the 12th Grade records challengers:
Brandon Bray (PV)
Adam Kelly (WT)---Good luck!!
Elijah Armstrong (3000-5000) (He's the one who has that slowish Soph Class 5000 mark!!)
Richard Rose (600-800)
Darryl Harraway (60, 200)
Grant Fisher (1500-2 Mile)
Matthew Maton (1500, 1 Mile)
Alex Ostberg (3000-5000)
Conner Mantz (3000-5000)
Kendell Sheffield (60H)
Brandon Rivera (HJ)

Now for the Girls Class records!

9th Grade:  7.47, 23.55, 53.23, 1:30.1, 2:06.48, 2:50.84, 4:24.4, 4:40.1, 9:42.20, 17:08.45 (a 7th Grader, Brianna Jackucewitz, ran the 5000 in 16:43.02 back in 2004!), 8.44, 5-10, 19-7, 40-2.50, 12-8, 45-7.25, 57-3, 3561 (Pent.)
10th Grade: 7.29, 23.43, 53.45 (for 440 yards!  there's no better equivalent 400 time!), 1:29.65, 2:01.8, 2:47.29, 4:24.25, 4:46.13, 9:29.0, 16:37.50, 8.19, 6-0.75, 20-5.75, 42-0.50, 13-6, 48-11, 58-11, 3846.
11th Grade: 7.24, 23.26, 52.19, 1:29.90, 2:04.96, 2:47.21, 4:11.72, 4:28.25, 9:04.51, 9:38.68, 16:19.69, 8.17, 6-1, 21-4, 42-5.50, 14-0, 52-5.75, 65-4.25, 3827
12th Grade: 7.19, 22.97, 51.93, 1:29.27, 2:03.59, 2:43.40, 4:18.9, 4:39.0, 9:17.4, 9:55.92, 16:11.85, 8.11, 6-3, 21-7.50, 44-6.75, 14-6, 56-7.50, 68-2.50, 4068.

A few comments.
The 9th Grade 1 Mile mark will be 42 years old in 2015!
Sophie Cantine ran the 1000 as a 9th Grader last year in 2:47.64, but it was on Seattle's OT, so doesn't count!
That 2:01.8 10th Grade 800 mark will be 41 years old in 2015.
The new PRO HS category has 3 members, Alana Hadley, Alexa Efraimson, and Mary Cain.
Cain's graduated, so Efraimson will be going after the following PRO HS (and 12th Grade PRO HS) records, all held by Cain:
1000 of 2:35.80
1500 of 4:06.63
1 Mile of 4:24.11
Desiree Freier's 14-6 12th Grade PV record was set during an OUTdoor meet, but the PV was moved INdoors, so counts as the INdoor record!

Here's some athletes who could challenge some of these marks!

New 9th Grade marks could fall to:
Daloria Boone (LJ)
Gabrielle Wilkinson (800, 1000, 1500, 1 Mile)
Bryn Morley (1000, 1500, 1 Mile)
Rylee Bowen (3000, 2 Mile, 5000)
Soph Class (10th Grade) records could be challenged by:
Jessica Lawson (5000)
Carson Dingler (PV)
Tyra Gittens (Pent.)
Candace Hill (60, 200)
Kaelin Roberts (200, 400)
Sophie Cantine (800, 1000, 1500, 1 Mile) But only if run on a 200 meter track!!
Jayla Kirkland (60, 200)
Symone Mason (200)
Sydney McLaughlin (60H, 400)
11th Grade marks could be broken by:
Courtney Corrin (LJ)
Stephanie Jenks (5000)
Kaylin Whitney (60, 200)
Hannah DeBalsi (3000, 2 Mile, 5000)
Alexis Duncan (60H)
Vashti Cunningham (HJ)
And Senior Class (12th Grade) records could be challenged by:
Kaitlyn Merritt (PV)
Haley Showalter, Sabrina Gaitan, and Gabby Figuroa (all WT)
Lexi Weeks (PV)

Sorry, but this post is too long already, so I'll cover the Collegiate Class Records in another post!
Should be ready in an hour or so!
