Great Marks Elsewhere Too

Great marks elsewhere indeed!
From Europe, from Boston, and from Collegiate Conference sites across the USA!!
And what better way to begin than with a Collegiate Record!!

From a small school (North Dakota State) in a small Conference (Summit League), Payton Otterdahl took the Collegiate Record in the Shot Put away from two giants of the event--Ryan Crouser and Ryan Whiting!!

Otterdahl sent the ball flying out 71-6.75, to get the CR, the Senior Class Record, as well as moving up on three lists!
He moves from 3rd A-T Collegiate to 1st!
From 12th A-T US to 10th!
And from 23rd A-T World to 18th!

But that wasn't the only CR broken over the weekend!
Who else but Mondo Duplantis would provide the other?!
His 19-5 clearance gave him the CR, the Frosh Class Record, the Age 19 Record, the National Record of Sweden, and the SEC Meet Record!
The Age, Class, and National records broke his own!
He moves from 2nd A-T Collegiate to 1st!
And it makes him 17th A-T World, tied with 3 others!

The PV had quite a lot else going on this weekend!

In Europe was the All Star Perche meet!
There, Sam Kendricks and Piotr Lisek had a good battle, with both clearing 19-5.50!
Kurtis Marschall went over a PR bar of 19-3.25!

On the Women's side, Anzhelika Sidorova and Angelica Bengtsson cleared 15-9.25!
For Bengtsson, she gets back her recently broken National Record of Sweden!
It makes her 13th A-T World, tied with 2 others!

Then came two others who improved their own National Record!
Ninon Guillon-Ramona got the NR of France, while Alysha Newman improved her NR of Canada, both with clearances at 15-6.25.
They're each 23rd A-T World, tied with each other!
Earlier, Sidorova had gotten over 15-7.50!

The SEC saw the former Weeks twins clear 15 feet!
Lexi Jacobus's 15-4.25 defeated her sister's (Tori Hoggard) 15-1.
For Jacobus, it's an INdoor PR!
It's also the SEC Meet Record!
It moves her from 3rd A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 2nd!
And she is now 8th A-T US!!

Grant Holloway and Divine Oduduru had great marks (and meets).
Oduduru took the Big 12 titles in the 60 and 200 with times of 6.52 and 20.08.
The short sprint made him 16th A-T Collegiate, tied with 8 others!

But in the 200, his startling 20.08 broke his own National Record of Nigeria, and gave him the Age 22 Record, the Big 12 Meet Record, and the Junior Class Record!
He moves from 4th A-T Collegiate to 2nd!
And from 5th A-T World to 3rd!

For Holloway, he strolled through the 60H in 7.44, breaking his own SEC Meet Record!

But maybe the real story was found in 2nd place, where Daniel Roberts suddenly ran 7.48!
This moves him from 7th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, to 4th!
And he becomes 20th A-T US, tied with 2 others!

The Men's 400 saw two different guys take over the World Lead!
First came Will London's 45.19 at the Big 12.
He gets the Meet Record, and a trio of places on my DDD's!
He's 10th A-T Collegiate, 11th A-T US, and 18th A-T World!

But at the American Conference, Kahmari Montgomery produced a 45.04!
He moves from 12th A-T Collegiate to 9th!
From 13th A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 8th!
And from 20th A-T World, tied with 2 others, to 12th!!

Other sprint marks---
Marie Josee Ta Lou sped the 60 in a World Leading time of 7.02!!
This makes her 17th A-T World, tied with 7 others!!

Bingtian Su ran the 60 in 6.49.

In the Big 12 heats of the 200, Andrew Hudson ran the one lap race in 20.33.
It became the temporary Big 12 Meet Record (See above!), and it gets him on 3 lists!
He's 13th A-T Collegiate, 14th A-T US, and 20th A-T World!

And Marcellus Moore added to the growing list of speedy HS boys in the 60!
His 6.65 makes him 16th A-T HS, tied with 4  others!

The Pentathlon saw some good marks!
Solene Ndama got the World Leader with her 4672 at the French Championships!

Michelle Atherley got the top Collegiate score with her 4498 at the ACC.
She's 8th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
And she moves from 24th A-T US to 10th, tied with 1 other!

A "last chance" meet was held at Boston University Sunday evening, featuring some fast 5000's!
Just like their December 1st meet (See earlier post!), the Women's race produced several quality times!

Marielle Hall took the Win in 15:07.17, but it wasn't a PR!
In 2nd, Karissa Schweizer ran 15:11.76.
She moves from 16th A-T US to 8th!
Courtney Frerichs ran 15:12.55, moving her from 21st A-T US to 9th!
Vanessa Fraser ended 4th in 15:14.75!
This makes her 10th A-T US!
Kim Conley was a far back 5th, but her 15:32.79 gives her 24th place on my US list!!

Removed FROM my US list was an oldie--Margaret Groos's 15:34.5 from 1981!!

Ed Cheserek won the Men's race in a PR of 13:08.05.
This makes him 20th A-T World!!
(He's still trying to become a US citizen!!)
The pair of Bor's were next, with Emmanuel running 13:10.23, and Hillary ending in 13:14.96!
Emmanuel is now 6th A-T US, and 24th A-T World!
Hillary is 10th A-T US!

Jenna Westaway's 1:59.87 in winning the 800 is the Canada National Record, and the first to go sub-2 INdoors!

While the BU meet featured the distances, the Western Kentucky Men's 4X400 squad ran 3:04.25, becoming 9th A-T School, tied with 1 other!!

Speaking of Relays, the SEC had a close battle in the Women's 4X400!!
Four teams finished just 0.54 apart, although none of the schools ran record times!
They were Texas A&M (3:29.15), South Carolina (3:29.56), Florida (3:29.57), and Arkansas (3:29.69)!!
However, in 5th came Georgia's 3:31.97, making them 19th A-T School!!

Stamatia Scarvelis had a big breakthrough in the WT, adding close to 6 feet to her PR!
Her 78-11.25 is the National Record of Greece, and the SEC Meet Record!!
She becomes 7th A-T Collegiate, and 13th A-T World!!

Also hitting a big WT was Sade Olatoye, her 78-11.75 at the Big 10 making her 6th A-T Collegiate, and moving her from 14th A-T World to 12th!

Old news from the Dusseldorf World Tour meet--
Jakub Ingebrigtsen's winning time in the 1500 of 3:36.02 breaks his own National Record of Norway!
But it also breaks the Age 18 Record--held by one Samuel Tefera--whom he beat here!!

Tefera's 2nd place time was 3:36.34!

To close this report, I have some additional marks to report, courtesy of today's eTN from T&FN!!
(I can't scour EVERY result page by myself!!  LOL)

I erred in my USATF report on the Women's 3K Walk!
Maria Michta-Coffey ended in 4th place, not 14th!!

Allie Wilson and Kameron Jones are both Collegiate athletes!
Jones's 1:15.32 in the Men's 600 thus makes him 5th A-T Collegiate!!
Wilson's 2:41.76 in the Women's 1000 makes her 6th A-T Collegiate!

Matthew Payamps ran the 1000 in 2:23.76 at USATF!!
He moves from 13th A-T HS to 2nd!!
Only Robby Andrews's HSR of 2:22.28 is ahead of him!!

Niyagua (?) Bayak HJ'ed 6-0 in her State meet, making her 12th A-T HS, tied with 9 others!!
And Victoria Vanriele ran the 600 in 1:30.36, making her 12th A-T HS!

And that is a wrap, dear readers!!

The next biggie is the European Championships!
I will have my Preview up before the meet begins!

See you soon!

Records "MU"d down at USATF

To understand my title, you need to know that MU is pronounced "MO"!!
And it was Athing Mu--all of 16 years old!--who super-charged the Record-breaking flow in this quite rare instance of Records being broken in middle or long distance events at a Championship meet!

Athing's blazers began in the heats!
There, this rail-thin girl (who is 5-10 tall--or more!!) ran to the front, and stayed there.
Result was a HSR by 0.90 seconds, the Junior Class Record (her own!), the Age 16 Record, and a move from 2nd A-T HS to 1st!
Her 1:26.23 also moved her from 14th A-T US to 5th, AND made her 22nd A-T World!
But that was her HEAT!!
Raevyn Rogers was 2nd in the heat, time of 1:26.53.
This made her 7th A-T US!
Madeline Kopp took 3rd iin 1:27.84!

Then the REAL running began!!
Lined up against a field of Pro's, this intelligent, but totally youthful braces-wearing girl again took to the front, but not until the 2nd lap!
And she didn't slow up!
She came through 400 in 55.04!!
(Remember, her 400 PR is 52.55!)
Along the backstretch, Rogers powered to Mu's outside, seeming to glide to the front, using her 49 second relay speed to take the race, and shove the upstart into her rightful place!
But no, Mu didn't give in!
And when Rogers saw her move away around the last curve, she seemingly just gave up!
You could actually see Rogers accept her 2nd place status!!
Mu kept going through the tape, and then when she saw the time, could not believe it!
Crying, laughing, jumping up and down, bent over in sheer awe at what she'd just done!!

1:23.57.

Take that in for a moment.
Ajee Wilson's best is 1:23.84!
The American Record was held by Alysia Montano!!
Mu was NOT beating times of 2nd tier elites!!
And she came within 0.13 of the WORLD Record!

For her magnificent effort, she got the American Record, broke her own Age 16 Record, broke her own HSR and Junior Class Records, and got the USATF Meet Record!
She moves from 5th A-T US to 1st, and from 22nd A-T World to 2nd!!
Simply amazing!!

Rogers finished in 1:24.88, making her 7th A-T World, and moves her from 7th A-T US to 5th!
Olivia Baker's 1:26.53 in 3rd was not a PR!
Madeline Kopp improved to 1:27.09 in 4th, moving her from 18th to 14th on the A-T US list!
Following were Georgeanne Moline and Kendra Chambers, both running non-PR's in 5th & 6th!

The very next race was the Men's 600!
The day before, in the heats, Donavan Brazier sailed through to a W in 1:15.64.
He was followed by Sam Ellison's 1:15.97!
This made him 13th A-T US!

As with the Women, the final was a BIT faster!!
As in WORLD RECORD faster!!
Brazier--who is as smooth looking a runner at top speed as Ajee Wilson--went through 200 in the 23's!
He came through 400 in 48 and change!
All he needed to do was not die, and the WR would be his!

His 1:13.77 took care of the old mark by 1.02 seconds!!
He also gets the American Record, the Age 21 Record, and the USATF Meet Record!
He moves from 5th A-T US to the Top!
And from 11th A-T World to 1st!

Ellison took 2nd in a quick 1:15.20!
He moves from 12th A-T US to 5th!
And becomes 8th A-T World!
Unheralded Kameron Jones took 3rd in 1:15.32.
This makes him 6th A-T US, and 12th A-T World!
In 4th came Chris Geisting's 1:15.67!
He moves from 14th A-T US to 9th!
And it makes him 13th A-T World!!
WOW!!

But the fast races weren't over!
Ajee Wilson demonstrated her talent by running a 29 last 200 in an attempt at the American Record in the 1000!
But it eluded her due to a slowish first 800 in the 2:05's!
Nonetheless, her 2:34.71 breaks her own USATF Meet Record--the 2:37.96 she'd run in the heats!
That time made her 11th A-T US!
Hanna Green's 2:38.16 had made her 14th A-T US!
And Hannah Fields's 2:39.22 had made her 23nd A-T US!!

Ajee's 2:34.71 broke her own USATF Meet Record!
It moves her from 11th A-T US to 2nd!
And makes her 16th A-T World!
Green's 2:35.40 in 2nd moves her from 14th A-T US to 4th!
Ce'Aira Brown's 2:35.62 moves her from 21st A-T US to 5th!!

Laura Roesler improved to 2:36.60 in 4th!
This moves her from 15th A-T US to 7th!
And Hannah Fields's 2:38.60 moves her from 20th A-T US to 14th!!

It was in the Two Mile races where my disappointment set in!!
Oh, a few of the Women's times made my US list, but what COULD have been wore me down as the race progressed!!

But let's begin with the Men!

In the "B" section, Drew Hunter decided to run a time that the "A" section crowd would pay attention to!
His 8:25.29--which won his section by 13 seconds!!
It gave him the USATF Meet Record.
And made him 20th A-T US!

The "A" group had it easy!
There were several runners capable of putting Hunter's time back in the pack!
But when the first 400 went by in 66 seconds, I knew this was just yet another Championship race Snorefest!!
Needing a final 800 in 1:54 to beat Hunter's time, they remained asleep at the wheel, ending with times in the 8:30's!!

The Women did better, but....!!
After winning the Mile (See below!). Colleen Quigley told an interviewer she'd been put into the "B" race!
And said she refused to run as a second class elite!!
And didn't!!

When Elinor Purrier glided to the front after a slow first few laps, no one went with her!
Then, after a Mile in 4:48, Shelby Houlihan hit the gas, passing Purrier, and winning the race!
But her sprint on the final lap wasn't enough to get the Meet Record!
Her 9:31.38 makes her 5th A-T US, and 15th A-T World!

In 2nd came Katie Mackey's 9:33.70.
This makes her 8th A-T US, and 22nd A-T World!
Purrier's 9:34.65 makes her 9th A-T US!
And Emily Lipari ran 9:41.12 in 4th, making her 22nd A-T US!

Back in 18th came HS star Marlee Starliper's 9:58.22!
This makes her 5th A-T High School!!

Another good race was the Women's 300!
The heats had seen Brittany Brown's 36.67 beat Gabby Thomas's 37.27!
This set up the anticipated duel in the final!
It lived up to expectations.

In lanes alongside each other, they ran as Siamese twins for the length of the race!
Only Brown's final kick gave her the W, by just 0.03 seconds!

Brown's 35.95 gave her the USATF Meet Record!
She moves from 7th A-T US to 2nd, and from 11th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 6th!
Thomas finished in 35.98 in her 300 debut!
This makes her 7th A-T US, and 3rd A-T World!!

Once again, a High School girl shined!
Kayla Davis (who my Preview neglected to mention her FRESHMAN HS status!!!), took 3rd in 37.46!!
This breaks her own Frosh Class Record!
It moves her from 13th A-T HS to 3rd!

Ryan Crouser came through as expected, taking the Men's SP by almost 3 feet over Joe Kovacs!
His 72-10.25, however, missed the Meet Record by an inch!!
Kovacs finally got over 70 feet, at 70-2.25!

Katie Nageotte had it easy in the Women's PV, clearing 15-9.25 after everyone else had bowed out!
(Jenn Suhr was a late scratch!)

The battle for American Women's Triple Jump supremacy took off with a USATF Meet Record effort of 47-9 by Keturah Orji!
While Orji was fouling her next 3 rounds, Tori Franklin produced her top effort, of 47-5!
Orji finally got her markers down again, hitting another just one centimeter short of her Winner!

High School girls went to town on Staten Island!
Before Mu's, Davis's, and Starliper's storm blasts came Anna Hall's tremendous HSR of 4302 in the opening Pentathlon!!
(I'm ashamed to admit that my Preview didn't even mention  her name!!  I must not have recognized who she was on the entry list!!)

Fluctuating between 3rd and 5th throughout, Hall's 4302 HSR finally took 3rd!!
It should be mentioned that Hall will be attending the University of Georgia, the same school where Kendell Williams was so dominant all the years she was there!

So it was really serendipitous that Hall would lose to Williams's 4498!!
Emilyn Dearman's 4356 took 2nd, making her 23rd A-T US!!

But the real story here was with Hall, from Boulder, Colorado!
Besides the HSR, she gets the Senior Class Record as well!
She moves from 2nd A-T HS to 1st!
She destroyed Williams's old HSR by 234 points!!
Oh, almost forgot to mention that Hall's Pentathlon HJ clearance of 5-11.25 makes her 22nd A-T HS, tied with 4 others!!
A day in the life!!

Both WT's were solid!!
Daniel Haugh took the Men's event with a PR of 79-1.75!
This moves him from 13th A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 12th!
And from 14th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 13th!
Conor McCullough was 2nd with 78-9.25!

The Women had a little battle going on between Janeah Stewart and DeAnna Price!
Adding the totals by which they missed their PR's would not top 3 inches!!
Stewart finally prevailed with her toss of 81-4.25, over Price's 80-5.50!!

Vashti Cuningham had the Women's HJ all to herself, clearing 6-5!

Andrew Irwin had his way in the Men's PV, being the only 19 footer--by a quarter inch!!

As mentioned above, Colleen Quigley won the Mile in 4:29.47!
After a jogging first 1320 (yards!), Quigley took off, wanting to put some space between her and Shelby Houlihan, fearing Houlihan's deadly sprint finishes!

But Houlihan didn't have enough, giving the US title to Quigley!
Her joyous awe at her W was fun to watch!!
Houlihan's time was 4:29.82!

For me, the Women's Walk took on some new interest after seeing a tweet from Maria Michta-Coffey before the race!
She announced herself as pregnant, but said she was looking forward to racing anyway!!
(BTW, the races were reduced from the Two Mile's the schedule I saw when doing my Preview to 3000's!)
MMC told me (in a tweet) that the athletes had been asked what distance they preferred, and they'd said the 3K!
She said the schedule just hadn't been changed!!
Nice.

Anyway, Nick Christie prevailed in the Men's race over Emmanuel Corvera!
And Michta-Coffey Walked her pregnant body to a 14th place finish!!
(Don't know how far along she is, but probably not more than 2 or 3 months!!)
Her time of 14:18.82 was far behind Miranda Melville's winning time of 12:57.58!!

Chase Ealey produced a mild upset in the Women's SP!
Her 61-1.50 defeated favored Maggie Ewen's 60-6!!

The sprint races (60 and 60H) didn't produce much!
The only race worthy of note here was the Women's 60H!
Sharika Nelvis ran a World Leader of 7.85!
And she needed all of that to defeat Evonne Briitton's PR of 7.86!!
That made her 22nd A-T US!!

I have a lot of great Records and marks left to report, but nothing more from the Ocean Breeze!!

The Collegiate Conferences, plus some other stuff from around the world, will be reported on in my next post, out in a few hours!

See you soon!

2019 USATF INdoor Preview--MEN & WOMEN

I'm back with my first Preview since last July--for the World Juniors!
(I sort of did one for the European Champs last August--but it wasn't up to my usual standards!)
That said, THIS Preview covers both Men and Women!
I'll list the events in order of when the Finals are scheduled, for each day, separated by gender!
Also per normal, I'll list the MEET Record, which is sometimes also the World and/or American Record!
Full details of the schedule can be found on the USATF or T&FN website.
However, the first event today will be at 9:00 a.m.Pacific Time!
For tomorrow, they begin at 9:30, PT!
And for Sunday, it's 10:05 starting time (PT)!
Some of it will be on TV--check your local schedule!
Two more things--
The names I give are the likely "serious" contenders, but they are NOT predictions!!
Also, the schedule has "A" and "B" races set for some running events, from 300 to the Two Mile!
These are Sections, NOT separate races!
I'm guessing they'll combine the overall marks to decide the places!!
OK, time to get going!!

Friday, February 22
MEN
Weight Throw (84-10.25)
Conor McCullough should be favored here, but Alex Young, Daniel Haugh, and Grant Cartwright could be right there!
Also watch for Rudy Winkler!
No MR this year!!

WOMEN
Weight Throw (84-0)
Janeah Stewart got off a BIG one recently (See earlier post!), so should be favored!
But you can't dismiss the OUTdoor AR holder in the Hammer Throw--DeAnna Price!
Both COULD challenge the MR (Also the WR!!), but let's leave the odds at just 45-55!!
Also watch for Janeva Stevens and Kaitlyn Long!

Pentathlon (4805)
Let's cut to the chase--you need only know two names here!
They're Kendell Williams and Erica Bougard!
All the others are there for window dressing!
The MR should survive--unless the contenders have been hiding some secret strengths in their carry-ons!!
MR gets 20-80 odds!

Saturday, February 23
MEN
Long Jump (28-2.25)
Forget the MR, friends!!
This event is already in a weak state here in the States (pun intended!), but this group here is even weaker!!
Jarvis Gotch is really the only recognizable name here!
But watch for Malik Moffett, whose 7.92 jump is the "best" of the entrants for 2019!!
Embarrassing!!

Heptathlon (6273)
I'm surprised the MR is just 6273!
But it looks like it will remain such until 2020!
Wolf Mahler, Solomon Simmons, and Curtis Beach are the names to watch.
(I'm giving just 35-65 odds for just 6000 points, let alone the MR!!)

Two Mile Walk 12:38.37)
Nick Christie Walked the Mile in 5:55 recently, so give the MR 70-30 odds of going down!
Emmanuel Corvera will put SOME fear in Christie's mindset!

Pole Vault (19-6.50)
Even if Sam Kendricks WERE here, the MR would be pretty safe!
Give Andrew Irwin-whose recent 19-3.50 shocked some top observers of the event--the top podium spot, but NOT the MR!!
Give him 30-70 odds!
Audie Wyatt and Scott Houston are other possible 19 footers!

High Jump (7-9.75)
Give this MR ZERO chance of falling!!
(The only things to be falling here will be the BAR!!)
Jeron Robinson and Trey Culver should top the podium's top rungs!
Brad Adkins is someone to watch!
JaCorian Duffield hasn't been heard from lately!
We'll see what he has to offer!

Shot Put (72-11.25)
Ryan Crouser started his season with a 73-plus!!
Give this MR 85-15 odds!!
Joe Kovacs hasn't even reached 70 feet yet, but he's Crouser's most likely challenger!

300 (31.87)
The MR is also the WR, so give it ZERO odds!!
Brycen Spratling and Monteo Mitchell are a couple of familiar names!
(Yawn!)

Two Mile (8:26.72)
If this group can't (or doesn't) run faster than the MR---MUCH faster!---I'm gonna cry!!
In my favorite event (the Women's race also!), I want to see these dudes RUN!!
My Top 24 A-T Performers list includes EIGHT times dated from 1974 to 1985!!
Sean McGorty, Drew Hunter, Garrett Heath, Will Leer, Sam Prakel, and Eric Avila COULD eliminate SEVERAL of those ancient marks!!
Tripp Hurt is here also, as is Lawi Lalang!!
BTW, I didn't even know Mr Lalang had become an American!!  He represents the US Army!!
(Who else??!!)
Odds for the MR crashing are (I have my fingers crossed and my head bent in prayer!) 95-5!!
Shoot me!

WOMEN
High Jump (6-7.50)
Just one name to list here!
Vashti, last name of Cunningham!!
If she's on, give the MR 40-60 odds!
Inika McPherson and Tynita Butts are other familiar names.
But watch for rising star (Literally??  LOL) Jelena Rowe!!
(Sure do miss Chaunte Lowe and Brigetta Barrett!!)

Long Jump (24-2.25)
BTW, that MR is held by Germany's Heike Drechsler!
In those days, foreigners could compete in the American Championships!
My policy is to say the MR is the best mark produced in the meet--even if NOT by an American!!
That said, Quanesha Burks, Kate Hall, and Kendell Williams are the key people to watch--although Williams will be coming off her Pentathlon!!

300 (36.15)
As noted above, this event will be run in sections!
Gabby Thomas seems the likely winner here, but it could be close!
Brittany Brown is running well!
Candice Hill is unpredictable,
Kayla Davis (Not to be confused with High School sensation Kamari Davis!!) is another speedster to watch!
Give Thomas 40-60 odds for the MR!

One Mile (4:25.92)
Shelby Houlihan is here!
BUT she's listed as doubling in the 2 Mile!
This probably means she won't be chasing Mary Slaney's 37 year old AR of 4:20.5!
That said, I'm giving Houlihan 80-20 odds of dipping into the 4-teens!
Colleen Quigley and Elinor Purrier could give serious chase---through 1200 meters!
Also watch for Kate Grace, Emily Lipari, Katie Mackey, Shannon Osika, and Cory McGee!!
MR gets 95-5 odds!

Sunday, February 24
MEN
One Mile (3:52.99)
Craig Engels's recent 3:54 race should make him the top name here!
But the MR is pretty safe--give it 40-60 odds!
(The air is thick with 1500/Mile fast times of late, so hopefully some of that steam will enter the Ocean Breeze at race time!!)
Sam Prakel, Eric Avila, Brannon Kidder,  and John Gregorek are other names to watch.

Triple Jump (58-3.25)
Conspicuously absent are America's best, Christian Taylor and Will Claye!
(WHY???)
Chris Carter and Donald Scott should vie for the W.
But no MR--ZERO odds!
Watch for KeAndre Bates, who I haven't heard from at all this year!

600 (1:15.07)
Donavan Brazier is gonna run this!!
So say Goodbye, Farewell, Adios, and slam the door on your way out!!
Odds are 99-1.
Erik Sowinski could make it SOMEWHAT interesting--especially if he gets in front before 400!
Also watch for Chris Geisting and Charles Jones.
Sam Ellison has also had a good year so far!

1000 (2:18.60)
With Clay Murphy present, the MR gets 80-20 odds!
Robby Andrews, Abraham Alvarado, and the omnipresent Brannon Kidder are the serious names to watch!

60H (7.37)
In an event that is now fairly depleted of big names for the USA, Devon Allen stands out as the BIG name here!!
But the MR is totally safe--ZERO odds!!
(Now, if Grant Holloway were here....!!!)
Two "familiar" names ARE here, however--Trey (No relation!) Holloway, and---ahem!--Aaron Mallett!!
Heh.

60 (6.34)
That MR--and AR and WR--are safe---totally safe!!
(Why isn't Christian Coleman entered??)
John Teeters and Derrick Kemp both have seed marks of 6.55, so should be the top contenders!
Watch for Dedric Dukes, who is probably better at the 200!

WOMEN
Triple Jump (46-8.25)
Let's not waste time, space, or energy!
We have two names to watch--Keturah Orji and Tori Franklin.
Based on marks, and consistency, it could be the TJ equivalent of the Ali-Frazier duel back in the day!
I'm personally favoring Orji, but that has more to do with the sour way Franklin left Oiselle than anything related to the pair's scale of talent and potential!
The MR gets 85-15 odds!!

Pole Vault (16-5.50)
Despite the presence of the Meet Record holder, and America's Rising Star, the MR should be safe--give it 15-85 odds!
Jenn Suhr's most serious goal at the Ocean Breeze should be to erase Stacy Dragila's Age 37 record of 15-1.50.
But make it a SUHR bet (Laugh, folks, laugh!!) she'll be following Katie Nageotte over bar after bar after bar!!
(Sandi Morris is injured, the former Weeks twins are in their Conference meet, and Demi Payne is in Drug Bust Jail!!)
Still, if the top two falter, watch for Morgann LeLeux, Annie Rhodes Johnigan, Kortney Ross, and Kristin Brown.

Two Mile Walk (13:55.27)
IF--IF Taylor Ewert were here, I'd give her and Maria Michta-Coffey EQUAL chance to not just break the MR, but win the race!
But for some unknown reason, Ewert isn't entered!
Lauren Harris is, but she'll have to contend with Miranda Melville and Katie Burnett, as well as MMC!
MR odds are 40-60.
(They'd be 60-40 with Ewert in the race!!)

Shot Put (66-4.50)
Here is another MR held by a foreigner from back in the day--in this case, it's Ilona Briesenick!
(And why aren't Raven Saunders and Michelle Carter here?  I know Carter got married recently, but Raven hasn't shown her face all season!!)
In their absence, we have Maggie Ewen facing a possible challenge from Chase Ealey, who produced a BIG throw recently--See a previous post!
Dani Hill (formerly Bunch), Janeah Stewart, and Janeva Stevens are other names to watch.
Meet Record is safe!

600 (1:23.84)
Georgeanne Moline, Olivia Baker, Chrishuna Williams, and Raevyn Rogers SHOULD be the top contenders, BUT....!
BUT we have Athing Mu here also!
She's a HS Junior, while the others are all "aged" Professionals!
Yet based on the year Ms Mu is experiencing, I have to think she's going to be right in the mix---given some smart strategy---which the Pro's might have more in abundance than the precocious youngster!!
That said, I give the High School Record of Sammy Watson 90-10 odds of falling!
(Interesting that Watson also went Pro recently (See earlier post!), which would make the light shine brighter on this kid than otherwise!!)

I know this post is quite long already, but I have just 4 more events to Preview, so hang in there!!

1000 (2:37.97)
This  MR is GONE!!
Give it 100-0 odds!
And make Ajee Wilson the lead contender!!
Can she also get the American Record of 2:34.19, set by Jen Toomey in 2004??
Laura Roesler is having a GREAT year, and could stick with Wilson beyond 4 laps!!
Ce'Aira Brown is another to watch!
Others include Kaela Edwards and Hanna Green!

Two Mile (9:28.15)
As in the Men's race, this MR COULD go down hard!!
It might be based on what Shelby Houlihan's intentions here are--to win a double, or to win a double in RECORD times!!!
That's the 64 MILLION dollar question!!
She HAS the ability to challenge the MR, the AR, and at least the 9:10 barrier!!
Colleen Quigley and Elinor Purrier are serious contenders also returning from earlier races!!
Katie Mackey, Heather Kampf, Emily Lipari, Amanda Eccleston, and Oiselle's Marie Lawrence are all contenders--to enter my DDD list---as NONE of the entrants here are presently on that list!!
While not as ancient as the Men's list (See above!), there are 10 marks on it dated from 1979 to 1986!
Slowest time on the list is 9:45.99!!
ALL of the above listed names are capable of that time!!
(Why isn't Katelyn Tuohy entered??  She could have gone after Mary Cain's HSR of 9:38.68!!)
One HS'er that IS here is Marlee Starliper!!
She ran that 9:20 for 3K (See earlier post!), but with a field like this, she'll have an excellent chance to get under 10:00--and maybe even 9:50!!
MR odds are 80-20---unless Houlihan runs like only Houlihan can--then raise it to 100-0!!

60H (7.70)
Paraphrasing the famous song, Where Have All the American Female High Hurdlers Gone??
The only truly "historic" name here is Sharika Nelvis!
But she's shown nothing this season, and is entered in the flat 60---which final follows immediately after this one!!
But give Nelvis the nod here anyway!
Watch for Evonne Britton, who ran 7.91 recently, and Kendell Williams, who is also in the Pentathlon AND the LJ!!
MR gets 10-90 odds!!

60 (6.99)
As noted just above, Nelvis is in this event also!
But she's pretty much a non-factor here!
Give this race to Aleia Hobbs--but NOT the MR.
It gets 1-99 odds!
Shania Collins and Candace Hill are two other podium contenders!

OK, friends, that's a wrap!
Thank you so much for hanging in there, and for using this Preview as your Guide to the entire meet!!

Watch it if you can, enjoy following it, and make sure to read my detailed report soon after its close!!

See you soon!

"Quiet" Week Quite Noisy

Well, well, well--
T&FN got it wrong!
They predicted a "quiet" week for this past weekend, in the week prior to the major Collegiate Conferences and the USATF meet!
I guess they didn't pay much heed to Yomif Kejelcha declaring he'd be chasing down the 1500 World Record of Hicham El Guerrouj's at the Birmingham meet!

Heh.

I guess Samuel Tefera ALSO wasn't paying heed to Kejelcha's bit of braggadocio either!

In fact, Kejelcha was ahead of pace after a 1:53 half!
When the rabbit left, there were Kejelcha and Tefera in the lead.
As the final lap began, coming off the first curve, Tefera passed Kejelcha on the outside, then cut in coming onto the straight!
From there, it was a battle royal (and no place better than Royal crazy England for that!!  LOL)--that is, until the gap widened, and it was Tefera, not Kejelcha, with the World Record!

His 3:31.04 is also the Age 19 Record, and the Birmingham Meet Record, and the Ethiopia National Record!!

Kejelcha shouldn't feel shame, as his 3:31.58 breaks his own Age 21 Record, and moves him from 7th A-T World to 3rd!!
Far back in 3rd came Stewart McSweyn of Australia!
His 3:35.10 gave him his National Record!
(BTW, the record he broke was held by Ryan Gregson, who was in the same race!!)

The other key event from B'ham was the Women's Mile, which highlighted UK's fave, Laura Muir!
And the tough Vet came through, speeding to a 4:18.75 British National Record!!

She also gets the B'ham Meet Record, and is now 3rd A-T World!!
And she got another GB National Record in the 1500, as her enroute time of 4:01.83 broke her own mark!
She moves from 20th A-T World to 16th!!
Winnie Nanyondo ran 4:29.40 for the National Record of Uganda!!

The Women's PV was the best field event there!
And it saw Ekaterina Stefanidi relegated to 4th!!
Home Girl Holly Bradshaw wowed the crowd in winning with a height of 15-9.25!
In fact, that same height was recorded by Katie Nageotte and Nikoleta Kiriakopoulou in 2nd and 3rd!
Stef's 4th place mark was a decent 15-5.50!

The time wasn't up to her double OG Champion status, but Elaine Thompson's 7.13 gave her the 60 win in her first race after a year off for surgery!!

Evonne Britton ran the 60H in 7.91 for the W.

In the German Championships, Konstanze Klosterhalfen won the 3000 in 8:32.47--off of a 61.5 final 400!!
She broke her own National Record, and moves from 22nd A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 15th!

In the Russian Champs, Anna Chicherova's HJ of 6-7.50 broke her own Age 36 Record!

Christina Schwanitz, Bralon Taplin, and Steven Gardiner all took over World leads!!
For Schwanitz, she reached 64-2.25 in the SP at the German Champs!
Taplin ran 45.26 for the 400 lead!
And Gardiner ran the 300 in 32.26 for the lead there!!
In the latter's case, the Bahamas stud moves from 17th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 10th!!

Genzebe Dibaba ran the 1000 in 2:37.40, not a PR!
Mujinga Kambundji (Don't you just LOVE her name??!!) ran a quick 60--7.08--for a World Lead tie!

Tyrell Richard ran a 400 in 45.39, making him 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others!

Kortnei Johnson sped a Collegiate leading 60 time of 7.14.
This makes her 13th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others!

Also on the Collegiate front came news of Payton Otterdahl's WT mark of 78-11.25!
He moves from 15th A-T Collegiate to 4th!
From 20th A-T US to 12th, tied with 1 other!
And it makes him 14th A-T World, tied with 1 other!

Tre Hinds won a 600 in 1:15.78, making him 19th A-T World!

The Men's Collegiate PV remains an event of some interest, mainly because of the presence of Mondo Duplantis!
And guess what?

Monda had to SHARE the week's leading Collegiate mark with KC Lightfoot!
Lightfoot's 18-7.50 was matched by Mondo's mark at the LSU meet!
(KC was in another meet!)
Lightfoot is now 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others!
But only Mondo took 3 shots at a Collegiate Record 19-5.25!!

Before we move to the HS crowd, reports of TWO Road World Records came in!!
(The IAAF only began making Road marks (other than the Marathon) official WR's last year!
Since I don't keep records of these Road distances, I'm not sure if there were faster "World Bests" prior to 2018!

Suffice to say, Julien Sanders's 5000 of 13:29, and Sifan Hassan's 14:44 were mighty impressive--especially the latter!!
The race was in Monaco!

The High Schoolers turned on the gas in some events!
(With one series of marks tragically to be ignored!!  See below!)

Topping the list is Trey Knight exploding out to 86-7.50 in the WT!!
He moves from 5th A-T HS to 2nd!
But he needs to add another 15 inches to get the Junior Class Record!
(And about 6 feet 9 inches for the HSR, which I still consider one of the best HSR's, IN or OUT!!)
He may take another shot at the NBIN!!

Tamari Davis took over a pair of HS leads with her 60 mark of 7.27, and her 200 mark of 23.41!
Neither is a PR, but the 60 gives her the Soph Class Record!

Male sprinters went wild also!
Lance Lang's 6.62 in the 60 makes him 4th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
And Micah Williams's 6.64 moves him from 19th A-T HS, tied with 2 others, to 8th, tied with 6 others!!

Marlena Preigh's 800 time of 2:06.80 makes her 17th A-T HS!

Above, I said I had some HS marks that tragically must be ignored!
I speak of some 3200 times in a Women's race!!

Get this---
Katelynn Hart won the race in 10:02.46!
Second went to Ericka VanderLende's 10:02.81.
In 3rd came Abbie Vanderkooi's 10:04.18.
And in 4th came Zofia Gudek's 10:07.03.
What do they have in common??
They would ALL make my Top 15 (I said 15!!) HS Performers list for INdoors---
IF--IF the race had been extended another 18,688 meters!!
Yes, my INdoor TWO MILE list would've been mightily revised!!
Let's hope all 4 show up at the NBIN and run a REAL Deuce!!
(And a 5000!!  LOL)

While I'm ranting, let me say I'm ALSO ignoring a series of fast DMR's run by several Universities last weekend!!
BUT they were run on Seattle's and Notre Dame's Oversize Tracks!

I've said it before---many times!!--and I'll say it again--
Times run on OT's should NOT be allowed to qualify for the NCAA Championships!!
The NCAA must change that ruling!!
It's not fair!!

Okay, friends, that's a wrap!
Next post should be my USATF preview!!

See you soon!!

Things to Consider (& some marks)

You're probably wondering--Why a report on the weekend, and it's only Friday?
Well, you'd be somewhat right to ask.
I DO have some marks to report, BUT they're from LAST weekend, not this one!!
I just want to clear the decks before I get any new marks to report!!
And there are a few questions I want to opine on!!
Shoot me!

As always, marks first!!

Some additions and corrections from Millrose--
Sam Ellison finished 3rd in that AR setting 800.
His time of 1:46.13 makes him 15th A-T US, tied with 1 other!
Natoya Goule's-1:59.13 in the Women's 800 is the Jamaica National Record!!
Oliver Hoere, finished 7th in that ALMOST record breaking Mile!
His iime of 3:54.83 makes him 6th A-T Collegiate.
As well, his enroute 1500 time of 3:39.30 makes him 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!!
And Morgan Smalls HJ'ed 6-1, making her 4th A-T HS, tied with 2 others!!

In other venues and meets--
Robbie Wilson's 2:02.65 earlier this year makes her 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Obi Igbokwe's 45.35 for 400 meters makes him 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other.
It's a PR, but he remains 21st A-T US!!
Daniel Roberts sped the 60H in 7.52, making him 7th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!!

Taher Tuku's (??) 55-9.25 in the TJ ranks him 19th A-T Collegiate!
Jonathon Jones's 45.38 in the 400 not only makes him 21st A-T Collegiate, but is the National Record of Barbados!!
Jordan Geist's 69-1.25 was a good SP matk, but wasn't a PR!
Emmanuel Wells's 6.53 over 60 meters makes him 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!

Michaela Morgan's 15-7 PV ranks her 18th A-T World, tied with 3 others!
She also broke Angelica Bengtsson's National Record of Sweden!!
Jasmine Moore added a quarter inch to her INdoor TJ best, her 43-0 making her 6th A-T HS!!
Finally (in the marks department!), Jakub Ingebrigtsen's 3:36.21 over 1500 meters is the National Record of Norway!!
Yes, young Jakub has run faster INdoors than his older brothers, Filip & Henrik!!

Okay, take a deep breath or two--we're about to enter Aaron K's Opinion World!!
(As if we ever leave it!!  LOL)

Caster Semenya
Long time readers of my blog know where I stand on Ms (??) Semenya--as well as Margaret Wambui and Francine Niyonsaba on a slightly lesser scale!
I don't feel she belongs in any all-women's events!
She may be female in the eyes of most--and she (??) probably is!
But her basic make-up sets her FAR apart from her "normal" female opponents!
Thus I ignore every single mark she runs, and deny her any record, including those of South Africa National Records!

In recent days (See discussion and article on the T&FN website and Message Board!), it's been rumored that IAAF is ready to ban her from competing against WOMEN, and probably take away all her medals, and give them to their rightful owners!!

I'm not the only one who holds this opinion!
While many may have not publicly stated what they  think, my guess is that most of the Women who have competed against Semenya--at any distance, but mostly in the 800--feel just as (if not more!) strongly on this matter!!

Let her still run and race!
But as with Wheelchair racers, give them their own category!
After all, it wouldn't be fair if a Wheelchair racer were given a lane on the track against runners who run on their feet!!
(Put Tatyana McFadden up against Eliud Kipchoge, and guess who wins---every time!!)
I just hope CAS comes in line with IAAF's latest opinions!!

There are a pair of runners who are having incredible INdoor seasons in 2019!!
They are Yomif Kejelcha and Athing Mu!

As we all know (if you read my Millrose report last week, and earlier posts) these two have been running super fast times, and will probably run even faster!!

Kejelcha is apparently going to make an attempt on the 1500 World Record at tomorrow's Birmingham stop on the World INdoor Tour!
And in a few more days, he's said he'll try again to break the WR in the Mile!
OUTdoors, he's run 7:28.00 for 3000, and 12:46.79 over 5000 meters!!
So, what IS his potential?
Well, INdoors, I believe he CAN get both WR's--and probably the 3000 and Two Mile WR's as well!!
I'd predict the following OUTdoor times for this young man---
1:44
3:27
3:45
7:20 (Yes, the 3K World Record!!)
7:52 for Two Miles
12:33
26:10
And if he ever tries a Marathon, look out, Eliud!!

As for Ms Mu---BTW, announcers at two different track meets have pronounced Mu as if it were MO!!  Were they wrong??---she has a wide range for a middle distance stud!
Her current INdoor PR's range from 52.55 for 400, to 1:27.36 for 600, to 2:44.43 for 1000!
And I have no doubt she could produce a fast Mile if she chose to!!
She appears tall (5-7 maybe??), and she's lanky (Usain Bolt was lanky during his racing career!), and she's young!!
Also--just like Katelyn Tuohy!--she loves to run for fast times, not just sit and kick!!

So, what are HER future possibles?
(INdoors, in 2019!)
I predict (IF she races these distances!)--
52.00
1:26.00
2:00.00 (or 1:59.9??)
2:40.00
4:15.00
4:33.00

Am I crazy??
(Shut your mouth!!  LOL)

Also on the T&FN MB is a discussion about Mondo Duplantis.
(Knock me over with a feather!)
But this particular component of T&FN's ongoing Mondo obsession is about whether he will--or should--compete in BOTH the NCAA's and European Championships, and the value of each!!

To begin, let me offer the dates of each meet--
The NCs are March 8 & 9!
The Euros are a week earlier--March 1-3!!

So the logistics of his traveling round trip to Scotland a full week before the NC's are eminently doable!!
Pro's travel to Europe and Asia and Australia etc all the time.
Back and forth, sometimes losing their poles at some airport!!
(Just ask Sandi Morris--or ANY PV'er!!  LOL)

Some commenters brought up the fact that his coach at LSU may not want him flying round trip to Glasgow a week before he's due to compete at the NC's!!

Others questioned the relative values of those  meets!
Are the Collegiates more important (to a Collegiate athlete) than the Euros are?
Especially someone like Mr Duplantis, who has an excellent chance at the Gold!!
Why should he have to choose?
And what WILL he choose??

As the entire T&F world knows, Mondo is a WORLD Class athlete, not just a top Collegiate athlete!
We also know he's chosen to compete for LSU for at least one year!

Also, in Europe, he'll have some other World Class Vaulters to compete against--Renaud Lavillenie, Piotr Lisek, Pawel Wojciakowski, and even his fellow Under-20, Sondre Guttormsson!!
(BTW, Guttormsson might also be weighing the value of each, as he's the National Record holder of Norway!!)

I say do both!!
Why not??
He does the Euros, flying over on February 28th?
He flies back no later than the evening of the 3rd!!
He arrives at LSU no later than the 4th!!
That gives him at least 4 days to overcome any jet lag!!

He's apparently in great shape!
And bottom line, IMHO, the Euros are MUCH more valuable to a EUROPEAN athlete's standing (ranking!) in the WORLD than whatever  he or she does in the NCAA's--which despite its strong foreign presence, is still considered an AMERICAN meet!!

Go for both, Mondo!!

I have a couple of Going Pro announcements--
Samantha (Sammy) Watson has said she's going Pro now, but hasn't yet named an agent or a shoe company!
However, she will NOT be competing for the Aggies any longer!

And Elise Cranny---who graduated from Stanford--has signed with Kimbia!!
Good luck to both!!

A Schedule reminder--
USATF is from February 22nd to the 24th.
The Euros, as stated above, go from March 1st to the 3rd!
Also as noted above, the NCAA's are March 8th & 9th!
Finally, the NBIN is from March 8th to the 10th!!

I hope to have Previews of all four!

See you soon!!

More Millrose--and More of More!

As noted in my earlier post, the rest of my Millrose report will be on the High Schoolers!!

And no one was more spectacular than Taylor Ewert!!
She Walked--and Ran!!
(But not in the same race!!  LOL)

In her primary event, she emerged with TWO High School Records!!
She won the Mile Walk in a HSR of 6:28.21!
She was timed at 1500 enroute in 6:02.85--her other HSR!!
(She returned a few hours later to cover a Running Mile in 4:51 and change!!)

Im the absence of Katelyn Tuohy--a late scratch because of illness--Marlee Starliper took the Girls Mile in 4:41.66!
She moves from 17th A-T HS to 12th!
Her 1500 split of 4:23.02 moves her from 17th A-T HS to 9th!!

Athing Mu continued her amazing season in winning the 600 in 1:27.36!!
While remaining 2nd A-T HS, she breaks her own Junior Class Record!
And she moves onto the A-T US list--in 14th!!

Britton Wilson ran 37.53 in the 300, moving her from 5th A-T HS to 3rd!!
Cheyenne Figueroa threw the WT 61-0.25, moving her from 22nd A-T HS to 12th!
Monique Hardy threw 60-2.25 in 2nd, not a PR!

In the Boys Mile, Sam Affolder didn't win!
Matt Rizzo of Bronxville took the W in 4:09.12, with brother Alex ending 6th in 4:12.89!!
(Does B'ville have two other guys to form a possible record-breaking 4 X Mile??)
Anyway, Affolder led at 1500 in 3:51.08, making him 15th A-T HS!
His Mile time was 4:09.68!

And now we turn our attention to the Elders of the sport!!

And the Men's Pole Vault Merry Go-Round rolls on!!
(See earlier posts!)
The next in line was a real shocker!
Andrew Irwin took the Tyson meet title with his 19-3.50 World Leader!
He became 7th A-T US!!
Chris Nilsen was 2nd with 18-8.75!!

But wait!!
Sam Kendricks took the World lead---AGAIN!!--with his 19-4.25 over in France somewhere!!
Jake Wooten also PR'ed--with his 18-9.25!
That makes him 13th A-T Collegiate!!
Sondre Gutormsen PR'ed also with his clearance of 18-9.25, which tied him with Wooten at 13th A-T Collegiate!!
It's also the National Record of Norway!

The Female Vaulters were not to be denied!

Anzhelika Sidorova joined the INdoor 16 foot crowd with her 16-1.25 in Madrid, which gives her the Age 27 Record!
She moves from 5th A-T World, tied with 2 others, to 4th, tied with 1 other!
Nikoleta Kiriakopoulou finished 2nd at 15-6.50!

Holly Bradshaw took her umpteenth British title with her 15-9!
In the absence of Tori Hoggard and Lexi Jacobus (both DNS's at the Tyson meet!), Emily Grove won with a 14-10.25 clearance!

Kortney Ross's 15-2.25 PR (which moves her from 17th A-T US, tied with 5 others, to 13th), beat an icon of the sport!
Her name is Jenn Suhr, who rust'busted her season with a clearance of 15-0.25!
While a good mark, it wasn't enough to beat Stacy Dragila's Age 37 record of 15-1.50!!
(She's likely to be at USATF, where she's sure to get that mark!!)

The other vertical jump saw Mariya Lasitskene reach 6-8.25, which gives her the Age 26 Record, and ties her 2018 PR!!

Yulimar Rojas TJ'ed 48-11.25, which breaks her own National Record of Venezuela!
She moves from 19th A-T World to 11th!
Tori Franklin nabbed the American Record with her 47-9.75!!

Genzebe Dibaba took over the World Lead with her 1500 time of 3:59.08.
She gets the Age 27 Record!!
She turned 28 a couple of days later!

Some good stuff from the BU meet---
Sean McGorty had a good duel with Brit Mark Scott in the 5000!
His 13:21.35 makes him 9th A-T US!
Scott ran 13:21.97!
Jenna Westaway's 2:37.04 in the 1000 is the National Record of Canada!
Laura Roesler is BACK!!
After an earlier fast K (See previous post!), she won the 800 with a 1:59.80!
She moves from 17th A-T US to 10th!
Also, Chris Geisting's 1:46.48 over 800 meters makes him 19th A-T US, tied with 2 others!

In the Muscle events---
Jeneah Stewart whipped the WT out 81-5.25!
It's the Age 22 Record!
It moves her from 10th A-T US to 3rd, and from 10th A-T World, tied with 1 other, to 4th!
Laulauga Tausaga reached 76-3.75 with the WT!
She makes a trio of lists--
11th A-T Collegiate, 15th A-T US, and 20th A-T World!!

Chase Ealey emerged with a SP PR of 61-9.75, making her 16th A-T US!
In doing so, she beat Maggie Ewen's 61-8.25!!

Grant Holloway came close to his Collegiate Record in the 60H, his 7.43 breaking his own Junior Class Record!!
But it was Chanel Brissett's super PR of 7.90 that won the Tyson meet!
This makes her 8th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
It also ties the Soph Class Record!

Ewa Swoboda ran a 7.11 in the 60!
Dafne Schippers was 2nd in 7.18!

Marco Arop sped the 800 in 1:45.90, making him 7th A-T Collegiate!
Ce'Aira Brown's 2:39.19 in the 1000 makes her 19th A-T US!

A pair of National Records from the Men's 1500--
Marcin Lewandowski's 3:36.50 broke his own NR of Poland, while Kaile Borglund's 3:36.63 gets him Sweden's NR!!
Lewandowski also gets the Age 31 Record!1

In the 4X400 Relay, Houston ran 3:01.51, making them the 4th A-T School!
Texas A&M ended 2nd in 3:01.56!!
They finished just 3rd at Tyson, but Iowa's 3:04.76 moves them from 24th A-T School to 12th!

Alina Shikh's 4581 score took over the World Lead in the Pentathlon!

Ending my INdoor report, Laura Muir came close to her 400 PR in the British Champs 3000--kicking hard to a 56.9 closer in her 8:48.03 W!
Yes, I said 56.9!!!

OUTdoors, thee were fast Half races at the RAK Half!!
For the Men, Stephen Kiprop won it in 58:42!
Abadi Hadis ran 58:44 to take the Silver!
Fikada Haftu's 59:08 was 3rd!
Jalen Wanders ran 59:13 in 4th!
This gives him the Switzerland National Record--as well as the fastest ever Half by a European!!!

I wish I'd seen the Women's race finish!!
Running the SAME time (65:45) were Senbere Teferi and Netsenet Gudeta!!
Teferi becomes 12th A-T World, tied with 2 others!
As well does Gudeta!!
In 3rd, just one second behind the leading pair, came Zenucha (??) Yimer!
She's now 15th A-T World, tied with 1 other!!
And she gets the Age 20 Record!!
Degefa Azimeraw ran 66:07, making her 20th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
Getting the best ever 5th Place mark was Valary Aiyalau (??), her time being 66:30!!

And that is a wrap--twice over!

Again, let's wish for a full recovery for Kemoy Campbell!!

See you soon!

Millrose--Sensational & Dramatic

Let's begin with the dramatic.
Very sad to note the story of Kemoy Campbell.
While rabbiting the Men's 3000 in The Armory-coming off the curve near the 1K mark, the Jamaican suddenly collapsed, fell into the infield, and was immediately surrounded by EMT's.
While it's not certain, he suffered a possible heart attack, but was revived, taken to Columbia Medical Center (where I had surgery in 1957!), and has been put into a 48 hour medically induced coma!
While the medics worked on him, the Shot Putters (The SP circle was right where he fell!) took a break, gathered together in prayer (in a very poignant moment), but resumed competition later!
All our hopes & prayers should be pointed toward this great athlete!

But the Millrose Games was dominated by a series of sensational marks--mostly from the middle distances--but including the Men's SP!

That's where Ryan Crouser pushed the ball out 73-3.25 to totally wipe out his competition, which included Joe Kovacs!
It's the Millrose Meet Record.
He moves from 10th A-T US to 3rd.
And from 20th A-T World all the way to 4th!!

Talking about sensational AND dramatic, nothing topped Yomif Kejelcha's chase of the World Record in the Mile!!
In fact, he sped ahead of the rabbit BEFORE the rabbit left the track!
Then he pushed through the next few laps, knowing he was on target!!
With no one with him, he nonetheless kicked hard--only to fall 0.01 (!!!) shy of Hicham El Guerrouj's 3:48.45 WR!!
Once he saw the time (3:48.46!), he sat on the track shaking his head!!
Two icons of INdoor Miling--Eamann Coghlan and Bernard Lagat were there to watch the race, and were equally shattered by the result---both at how truly GREAT was Kejelcha's run, but also by how CLOSE he came!!
For his trouble, he nabbed the Millrose Meet Record, broke his own Age 21 Record, and the Ethiopia National Record!!
He moves from 12th A-T World to 2nd!
He was timed at 3:33.07 at 1500 enroute, which makes him 6th A-T World, tied with 1 other!!
Far back came Ed Cheserek, timed in 3:53.29!
Just behind the former King came Clay Murphy, his 3:53.30 moving him from 20th A-T US to 13th.
His enroute 1500 time of 3:37.46 makes him 7th A-T US!!

Following were Brit Josh Kerr (3:53.65), Craig Engels (3:54.18), and the venerable Nick Willis, whose 3:54.80 gave him the Age 35 Record!
All 10 finishers broke 4 minutes!!

The Women's Mile was exciting too!
And close!
That is, until "KoKo" (aka Konstanze Klosterhalfen) whipped her model's legs into a mad frenzy, easily moving away from the crowd to win in 4:19.98.
That time, plus her 4:02.70 enroute time at 1500, gave her Germany National Records!!
Two for the price of one, as they say!!

She also got the Age 21 Record, but missed the MR by a mere 0.09 seconds!!
Her Mile time makes her 5th A-T World, while her 1500 makes her 23rd A-T World!!

In 2nd, Colleen Quigley (also a model!!) ran 4:22.86, making her 9th A-T World.
And she moves from 8th A-T US, tied with 1 other, up to 4th!
Her 4:06.15 split at 1500 moves her from 22nd A-T US to 8th!!

Kate Grace ran 4:24.27 in 3rd, followed by Shannon Osika's 4:25.71.
which moves her from 20th A-T US to 11th!
Her 1500 split of 4:07.64 makes her 12th A-T US!!
Katie Mackey;s 4:26.39 makes her 15th A-T US!
Cory McGee's 4:26.79 moves her from 22nd A-T US to 16th!
McGee's 4:08.36 split moves her from 20th A-T US to 15th!
And Mackey;s split of 4:08.59 makes her 20th A-T US!!

Collegiate runner Danae Rivers ran 4:29.47, making her 10th A-T Collegiate!
Her 4:11.24 at 1500 makes her 6th A-T Collegiate!

He'd tried several times to break Johnny Gray's INdoor American Record, in 2019 celebrating its 27th birthday!
Oops!
I guess it stopped at 26 years, as Donavan Brazier finally got it, his 1:44.41 finishing 2nd to Michael Saruni's equally tremendous 1:43.98!

For Saruni, he gets the Kenya National Record and the Age 23 Record!
Not to mention the Millrose Meet Record!!
He moves from 20th A-T World to 2nd!

Brazier moves from 2nd A-T US to the Top!
And he moves from 14th A-T World to 5th!!
He split 49.89 at 400!!

NOTE: As my loyal readers know, I've accepted a few marks that the IAAF or USATF did not---i.e. Emma Coburn's 9:11.42, Gwen Berry's 251-4, and Ajee Wilson's INdoor 1:58.27 American Record!
But with Wilson breaking the "official" AR of 1:58.71---AGAIN!!--I've decided to rescind my acceptance of her "tainted meat" mark, and to accept the time she ran this year as the AR!!

And that's why Wilson's 1:58.60 is now the American Record, as recognized by the official agencies (I assume!!), and by this blog!!
She is now 18th A-T World!!

Natoya Goule's 1:59.13 came 2nd.
Ce'Aira Brown's 1:59.74 in 3rd moves her from 21st A-T US to 10th!!

The 3000's--Men and Women--were fast and deep!!
Despite the collapse of Kemoy Campbell, the race continued as the medics tended to Campbell right beside the track!!

Grant Fisher outkicked Morgan McDonald--7:42.62 to 7:42.76!!
For the Cardinal, he becomes 3rd A-T Collegiate, and 21st A-T US!!
For McDonald, he becomes 4th A-T Collegiate!!
In quite a race for the College crowd, 3rd placer Aman Kemboi's 7:44.77 makes him 7th A-T Collegiate!!

The Women's race was equally productive!!
Alicia Monson, the Wisconsin Collegiate, shocked the Pro's by winning the 3K in 8:45.97!!
She becomes 3rd A-T Collegiate, and 15th A-T US!!

Rachel Schneider's 8:46.44 makes her 16th A-T US!

Jessica O'Connell's 8:46.50 in 3rd got her the National Record of Canada!!
Aisha Praught-Leer's 4th place time of 8:46.60 made for a strong front four!!

So what happened to the favored Emma Coburn and Elinor Purrier?/
They were clipped, causing both to take a tumble.
They got up and finished, but couldn't close the gap!
Coburn ended 5th in 8:52.27, while Purrier finished further back.
Between them came Weini Kelati, whose 8:53.98 gave her the National Record of Eritrea, and makes her 10th A-T Collegiate!!

In other Millrose action---
Vashti Cunningham HJ'ed 6-4.75 for an easy win!
Equally impressive was returning-from-injury English Gardner!
In her 1st race since 2017 (!!), she sped 7.10 in the 60 to come close to Ewa Swoboda's World Leader!!
She becomes 20th A-T US, tied with 2 others!

All my other Millrose marks came from High Schoolers!
This post is already quite long, and there's lots more to report (including those Millrose marks!), so I've decided to split this report into TWO posts!!

Be back in a few hours with all the rest!!
(I promise you the wait will be worth it!!)

See you soon!

XC--and Oh Yes, INdoors

The Karlsruhe stop on the World INdoor Tour provided some World Leaders, but it was the USATF Cross Country Championships that made this weekend!!
Two great races--with the Women running the same 10K distance as the Men, made for some competitive races!

The quintet of African transplants ruled the Men's race, with Shadrack Kipchirchir leading the way!

Kipchirchir led most of the way, but was closely followed by Emmanuel and Hillary Bor, Stan Kebenai, and Len Korir!
He won by a second over Emmanuel Bor, 28:52 to 28:53!
Korir's 28:55 took the Bronze over Hillary Bor, 28:55 to 28:57.
Kebenai fell off the pace, ending 5th in 29:04.
Far off the front came Scott Fauber's 29:20 in 6th, and Mason Ferlic's 29:31 in 7th!
Drew Hunter finished 9th in 29:36!

The Women's race was mostly a battle of H's--Molly Huddle, Marielle Hall, and Shelby Houlihan--with Aliphine Tuliamuk mixing it up!
They too went back and forth--through 9 kilometers!!
That's when Houlihan put down the hammer--and nailed the W!!
Her 3:02 final 1000 gained 8 seconds on her challengers, as her 32:47 beat Huddle's 32:55 with ease!
Hall's 32:56 was right behind, giving the podium a distinct "H" style!!
Tuliamuk fell off the front, ending 4th in 33:03!
Amy Cragg (33:17), Courtney Frerichs (33:24), and Karissa Schweizer (33:28) were next!
Shannon Rowbury, in one of her rare appearances in races over 5000 meters--and still on the rebound from giving birth last June--ended 22nd in 34:45!

But INdoors did have its moments!!
The vertical jumps led the way, with Japan's Naoto Tobe PR'ing in the plurals all the way to 7-8.50!!
(His earlier PR in the series was at 7-7.75!!)
This is the National Record, and the Karlsruhe Meet Record!

Another HJ of note came from Shelby McEwen, whose 7-7 makes him 12th A-T Collegiate, tied with 6 others!!

On the Women's side came 17 year old Yaroslava Mahuchukh of the Ukraine, her 6-6'25 leap being the Age 17 Record!!

The Men's PV continued its rise (by a centimeter each time!), with a few Vaulters taking turns at the top!
After Mondo Duplantis's and Matt Ludwig's 19-1.50's, then Sam Kendricks's 19-2 (See previous post!!) comes Piotr Lisek's 19-2.25!
But we ain't done yet!
Kendricks returned to the top of the World Leader list with his 19-2.75!!
And THEN---Mondo kicks ass with his 19-3!!
That breaks his own Frosh Class and Age 19 Records, as well as moving him from 3rd A=T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, to 2nd, no ties!!
Next??

Lest we leave the Women out of it, along comes Isabella Coscetti's 12-10, which takes over the Frosh Class Record for HS'ers!!

The Karlsruhe Women's PV saw a great competition, with a trio of Women hitting 15-5.50!
Alysha Newman led the way, her mark breaking her own National Record of Canada, and making her 23rd A-T World, tied with 3 others!
Ekaterina Stefanidi and Anzhelika Sidorova also cleared 15-5.50 in 2nd and 3rd!

Finally, Bonnie Draxler's 14-10 PR makes her 10th A-T Collegiate--but misses the US list by one inch!!

Ewe Swoboda became the World Leader in the 60 with her 7.08 win at Karlsruhe!
Far  back in 2nd (7.19) was Dafne Schippers!!

A 20 year old Frosh--Kenny Bednarek--sped the one lapper in 20.30, and making three lists in the process!
He's now 10th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other--8th A-T US, tied with 1 other--and 13th A-T World, tied with 1 other!!
Cut FROM my US list were 4 athletes, including Justin Gatlin's 20.42 from 2002!!

The Camel City meet saw a pair of flat track World Bests, both coming in the 800's!
Clay Murphy's 1:45.92 won the Men's race, while Ajee Wilson's 1:59.26 dominated the Women's!

Back a ways came Athing Mu, whose 2:03.98 bettered Wilson's best INdoors as a HS'er, but also moved her from 14th A-T HS to 4th!!

Ed Cheserek took the CC Mile in 3:55.74!!

Thomas Staines extended his fine season, his 1:15.31 giving him the 600 National Record for Great Britain!
But he also moves from 11th to 4th on the A-T Collegiate list!
The cherry on top is him making the World list as well--8th A-T, tied with 1 other!!

Malaika Mihambo's LJ of 22-11.25 at Karlsruhe gave her the World Leading mark, as well as making her 20th A-T World, tied with 4 others!

Pam Dutkiewicz ran the 60H in 7.91.
Kurt Powdar ran the same event in 7.61, moving him from 11th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 7th!!

I have a few older marks, as  always---
The Clemson meet saw Kendell Williams score 4490 points in the Pentathlon, becoming the US leader!!

In a previous post, I mentioned Aliyah Whisby's score of 4372 as a Georgia Frosh!
But I failed to say this makes her 18th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, and 17th A-T US, tied with 1 other!!

Indiana ran a fast DMR, its time of 9:27.30 (on a 200 meter track!) moves them from 9th A-T School to 6th!!

Alicia Monson's 15:34.53 in the 5000 makes her 23rd A-T Collegiate!

I also forgot to mention that Karsten Warholm's 45.56 in the 400 broke his own National Record of Norway!!

Monique Hardy whipped the WT out 62-9.50, moving her all the way from 24th A-T HS to 6th!!

A correction--
I need to learn a nation's abbreviated initials!
I said that Fabrice Zango's 57-6.25 TJ had made him the National Record holder of Burundi!!
OOPS!!
That "BUR" abbreviation stands for Burkina Faso, NOT Burundi!!
(As more than one T&FN Message Board member pointed out to me!!)

No pregnancies or births, but I do have a wedding to announce!!
Shot Diva Michelle Carter married long time friend Courtney Elder in a beautiful ceremony where her dad--Michael Carter!--walked her down the aisle!!
Great (and many!) photos of the wedding are available online!!

(BTW, it seems Christina Manning also recently married, but I don't have her new name yet!!)

More World INdoor Tour meets are coming, as well as the Millrose Games!!

See you soon!
