Texas Relays 1st Super Meet of 2014 Outdoor Season

If you were wondering when the 2014 Outdoor season was REALLY going to start, the Texas Relays supplied a definitive answer:
NOW!

The Pole Vault continues to shine.
Indoors, you had Lavillenie's WR, plus Petrillose's CR, and HSR's by King and Freier!

Well, Desiree Freier has continued to direct the spotlight at this exciting field event.
She is now the OUTdoor HSR holder, to add to her INdoor HSR!!
She went over 14-3.25, breaking Morgann LeLeux's 2011 HSR of 14-2.75!
Besides 1st A-T HS, this was the Senior Class record too!

Kaitlin Petrillose has moved successfully outdoors as well.
After breaking the INdoor CR with 15-1, she has moved to 4th A-T Collegiate OUTdoors, vaulting 14-9 to win at Texas.
She is tied with 1 other.
She jumped all the way from 22nd place, where she was tied with 2 others!
And she also moved onto the A-T US list Outdoors.
She's 18th A-T US, tied with 3 others!

Martina Schultze also jumped well at Texas, her 14-5.25 making her 17th A-T Collegian, tied with 3 others.

Trayvon Bromell had quite a time.....or time(S) at Texas.
He first won his heat in 10.02, which was a new Collegiate Frosh Class record!
It also placed him 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others.

Then he broke his OWN Frosh Class mark with a 10.01 final!
It also tied him (with 2 others) for the World Age 18 record!!
Plus, he moved up 3 spots on the A-T Collegiate list, to 19th, also tied with 3 others there!

The Women's Javelin was good at Texas.
Kara Patterson is coming back from injury and an off-year.
She won with a Texas Relays MR of 198-4.

In 2nd was Marija Vucenovic, whose 186-1 moves her from 20th A-T Collegiate up to 13th!

Then came Hannah Carson, who continues her PR surge in 2014.
Now a Soph in college, her pre-2014 PR dated from 2007, when she was an 8th grader!!
She threw the Jav 177-3.
Not yet in the Top 24 A-T Collegians, but getting there!!

Shelbi Vaughan is another coming back from a sub-par 2013.
The HSR holder in the DT at 198-9 from 2012, she finally nipped that with a PR throw of 198-10 at Texas.
This makes her 12th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!

Ryan Crouser also PR'ed at Texas, his SP of 69-9.50 moving him to 15th A-T Collegiate!

Sticking to the field events for a moment, but moving to the World stage, Zheng Wang of China broke her own National record with a toss of 254-10 in the HT.
This makes her 5th A-T World!!
It's also the Age 26 record!!

There was a fantastic race in the Men's 4X100 University Relay at Texas!
Florida just edged out Texas A&M at the tape, 38.29 to 38.30.
These were new School records for each!
Florida is the # 3 School A-T Collegiate.
Texas A&M is number 4 School!!

One other HSR was set at Texas (besides Freier's!).

St Thomas Aquinas (FL) broke the 4X200 Relay HSR with their 1:33.47.
The record they beat?
Would you believe the 1:33.87 set by the legendary Poly/Long Beach team of 2004?
Aquinas averaged about 23.37 per 200 leg!!

Not a record, and not at Texas, but there was a CLASSIC 3200 meter race at the Mt Carmel HS Invitational!
The great Sarah Baxter, probably heavily favored to cruise to a victory, found herself in a bit of a RACE!!

With PR's of about 4:56 and 10:35 in the 1600 and 3200, Bethan Knights was not expected to seriously challenge one of the superstars of HS track and field.

But she ran the race of her life (thus far!), TYING (!!!) Baxter in a very good time of 10:07.52!!
Has anyone ever heard of a TIE in a race longer than, say, 200 meters??

I'm 100% against running the 1600 and 3200 distances (in place of the 1 Mile and 2 Mile), so these times will NOT be on my Top 24 lists!!
But it seems we can add Bethan Knights of CA to the growing list of HS middle and long distance SUPERstars!
Hopefully, ALL of them (Alexa Efraimson, Elise Cranny, Hannah Debalsi, Tessa Barrett, Caroline Alcorta, Baxter & Knights....along with a few other rising stars!) will meet in a race over Two Miles or 5000 meters.
Maybe at Arcadia or NBN??
Or even at Payton Jordan??

Bernard Lagat succeeded on his promise.
He broke the US Road record for 5000 at the Carlsbad race, his AR 13:18 taking 2nd to Dejen Gebrmeskel's 13:11.

Julia Bleasdale took the Women's race in 15:04, moving her to 3rd A-T GB in the Road 5K.
Brenda Martinez led the Americans in 4th, her 15:21 a Road PR!

On a personal note, I just became a paid member of the TFAA (Track and Field Athletes Association).
This is the group who are seriously challenging USATF to answer the many questions left from the INdoor USATF meet.
Especially the DQ's of Gabe Grunewald and Andrew Bumbalough!

Jordan Hasay's decision to withdraw from Sopot solved the problem with the Grunewald DQ.
She was reinstated, and ran in Sopot.

But despite CLEAR evidence that absolutely ZERO contact was made between Bumbalough and Galen Rupp during their 3000 in Albuquerque, Bumbalough's DQ remains on the books!

That needs IMMEDIATE resolution!!
(Hey, Alberto!!  Withdraw your damn protest!!  Tell USATF you made a mistake, and that you're sorry for the MESS you initiated!!  It's easy, Alberto....Just Do It!!!)

Then, USATF can begin to try to solve all their other problems!

Suffice to say, I feel GREAT that I joined TFAA's cause!!
Please join them, and recommend that your friends and family do too!!

See you soon with (hopefully) more great marks from the already-productive 2014 OUTdoor season!!

Vaulters Soar Early.....and the Outdoor Q's

We're outside!
From this time on, my blog will be all about the great OUTDOORS!!

Just as I did during the INdoor season, my posts for the next several months will deal solely with OUTdoor track and field.
Oh, there will be some marathons and other road races reported on, and we'll get the rare INdoor Pole Vault or Shot Put when the weather's bad, or just to entertain Mall shoppers.

But the other 99.99% of the time, all the records and marks and athlete's places on my various DDD's will be from OUTDOOR meets.

That's one thing you can depend on!
I don't mix or combine indoor marks with outdoor marks.
They are kept totally separate!!

(T&FN has what they call a "comprehensive" yearly list on their website.  This means that AFTER the INdoor season ENDS, they still put an athlete's INdoor marks on their lists....if it was better than what that athlete has produced OUTdoors thus far!!  To my mind, that just confuses people!  So once INdoor ends, I store my INdoor part of my book in my file cabinet!!  What you get is 100% OUTdoor.......except for those anomalies listed above!)

So, before tomorrow's 1st day of the Texas Relays....which SHOULD produce all kinds of great marks.....here's a few marks from the first days of the 2014 OUTdoor season!

As with indoors, the outdoor season has begun with the PV the highlight.

Desiree Freier, the new HSR holder Indoors, has soared 14-0 outdoors, moving her into 3rd on the outdoor A-T HS list!!
I have a feeling she'll soon hold BOTH HSR's!!

But she better watch out for Lexi Weeks.
This young lady is already at 13-10!!
That mark places her 8th A-T HS.

At the Collegiate level, Duke's Megan Clark has PR'ed again, this time to 14-7.25!!
That makes her 8th A-T Collegiate, although tied with 5 others!
And she's just a Sophomore!!

He hasn't quite reached my OUTdoor DDD just yet, but INdoor HSR holder Devin King has gone over 17-5 already, just ONE INCH shy of making my Top 24 Performers list!!
Think this dude will make it??
LOL

The only other early early EARLY season marks come from the SP and HT.

Stamatia Scarvelis got an outdoor PR with her 52-4.50.
This makes her 13th A-T HS.

In the HT, USC Senior Remy Conaster has tossed the ball and chain 238-8 for 23rd A-T Collegiate!

How good was the 2013 Outdoor season?
Well, compared to the 2014 INdoor season, not so great!!
Remember that 395 marks from 2014 are now embedded on my various DDD's from Indoors.
But 2013 OUTdoors??
There were just 293 marks that date from 2013 on my Top 24's!!
Here's the breakdown:

World          A measly 18 Women's marks made it last year, compared to an also-paltry 33 Men's marks!!
US              Here, the Women ruled, by a score of 47 to 32.
Collegiate    And here, the Women REALLY dominated!  They won, 66 marks to 30 for the Men!
HS              The Girls (Women?) almost tripled the Boys (Men?) score, 49 to just 18!!

Overall, the Women put 180 marks on my 4 Outdoor DDD's in 2013.
The Men?  Just 113.

Will....or CAN....they do better in 2014?
And I'm talking about both Men AND Women!!

But what exactly does it take for an athlete to get on one of my DDD's??
I mean, MINIMUM standards!!
You know, just to make it into 24th place!!
Well, here are the marks needed to get you (or your favorite athlete) onto these lists.
Following are the 24th best marks in the 4 categories.
I'll list them by event, and the categories will go---left to right---as follows: World, US, Collegiate, HS.
If I don't have a list for an event or category, I will indicate that by "*****".

Well, there you have it.
Those are the Q's for making it to AT LEAST 24th place on my DDD's!!
Think we'll get over 300 marks from 2014 on them??
(Remember, only 293 made it in 2013!!)

Tomorrow.....actually just 3 minutes from now!!......the Texas Relays begin the REAL Outdoor 2014 season!!!

On your marks........!!!!

The 2014 Outdoor Season: A Preview

The 2014 INdoor season is over!
And it was MUCH better than anyone imagined!
(See all my Indoor posts, which means MOST of my 43 previous posts, for the complete history!)
And here we are, already into the "more serious" business of the 2014 OUTdoor season.
Following is a bare bones summary of what we can look forward to.
BEWARE: The following are open to possible changes.  Check the T&FN website (Calendar), Twitter, and other sources for up-to-date details.

Next week are the Texas Relays, always a super meet, albeit normally affected by heavy winds.
There's also the Carlsbad 5K (Bernard Lagat has said he wants the Course Record!) and the Raleigh Relays.

In April are the Florida Relays, Stanford Inv,, Paris Mar,, Sea-Ray Relays, Sun Angel Classic, Arcadia Inv, London & Rotterdam Mars, a few College dual meets, Kansas & Mt SAC Relays, a couple of College conferences, Boston Mar, Drake & Penn Relays, and a Road Mile in Des Moines.

May (besides flowers!!  LOL) brings us the beginning American Track League (ATL) meets, Payton Jordan (Molly Huddle and Sally Kipyego will be gunning for a sub-31:00 10K--plus all the usual distance classics!), a few HS State meets, Doha & Shanghai, then Pre Classic DL's, Jamaica Inv, World Cup Walks, more Dual meets, Oxy High-Performance (where Mary Cain ran her 4:04.62 last year!!), more State HS meets, JUCO, NAIA, and NCAA II & III Champs, and the Tokyo & Beijing GP's, not to mention the 1st World Relays meet!!

In June, we'll get Gotzis Multis, more ATL's, HS State meets, Freihofer's 5K for Women & Rock and Roll Marathon (San Diego), Great Southwest HS meet, Rome & Oslo DL's, Hengelo & Moscow, the OUTdoor NB HS Champs (Remember all the Records at the recent INdoor version!!!), , Kucosinski Memorial, Grandma's Mar (HS'er Alana Hadley is racing there!!), the Brooks PR meet, Golden West Inv, Portland Track Festival, not to mention the NCAA and USATF Championships!!

July brings us Glasgow, Lausanne, Paris & Monaco DL's, the Peachtree 10K, the Commonwealth Games (Looks like it's going to be a GREAT one this time!!), plus the World Junior Championships in....Eugene!!

August and September finishes off the DL's (Zurich & Brussels, Birmingham, Stockholm & Berlin), but also has the European Championships.

I don't know the details, but the ATL list of events may be longer than first announced.
Also, there's a series of Road Miles, plus a special 60th Anniversary Mile to be held during the Jerome Classic (in the same stadium where Bannister & Landy dueled in 1954!!).

And, as we've learned in all the years we've followed the sport, expect the unexpected!!
Who knows which athletes--from HS'ers to elite Collegians to the Pro's, will choose to chase which records??

As to specific athletes, what will the following athlete's seasons bring us:

Usain Bolt
Renaud Lavillenie
Mary Cain
Genzebe (& Tirunesh) Dibaba
Haile Gebrsellassie
Ken Bekele
Alexa Efraimson & Elise Cranny
Raven Saunders, Devin King & Desiree Freier
Abbey D'Agostino & Phyllis Francis
Brigetta Barrett & the back-from-pregnancy Chaunte Lowe
Brenda Martinez & Galen Rupp
Mo Farah & Shalane Flanagan

And so many more!!

During the INdoor season, there were 395 additions to, or revisions to, my DDD lists.
Will the OUTdoor season reach the 400 mark??

How many WR's, AR's, CR's, and HSR's will be broken in 2014?

Remember.....
Expect the Unexpected!!

And keep on following this blog for ALL the marks and records!!
It's NOT going to be an "off" year!!

2014 Indoor Season: A Look Back

On December 31st, just 22 days into my blog, I wrote 4 posts reviewing the long-past 2013 Indoor season ( 2 were about the Indoor season, and 2 were about the outdoor season!), including picking my Athletes of the Year.
I'm going to change the format a bit.
I'll still pick my AOY's, but will omit the Honorable Mention's I did for 2013.  (Those who made it onto my DDD lists, the Top 24 Performers lists!)
Also included will be various picks for such as:
Best Performance
Best Meet
Best Event
I'll also include some T&F Record Book trivia.
Plus some closing comments.
(As always, all my choices will be separated into the four categories: World, US, Collegiate, and HS, with each gender done separately too.)

Athletes of the Year: Men

World          RENAUD LAVILLENIE  Who else?  He not only was the only individual WR breaker, he broke the legendary Sergey Bubka's WR!!
US               GALEN RUPP  He broke two US standards!  While controlled record attempts, they were still exciting to watch.  David Torrence and Bernard Lagat broke US records too, but in "minor" events.
Collegiate    LAWI LALANG  This blog is about records, and Lalang broke the iconic mile CR!  I almost went with Edward Cheserek, who upset Lalang in two NCAA meet races.  I also thought of going with the Texas A&M 4X400 Relay team, as they broke the CR in a great race at the SEC.
HS              DEVIN KING  He dominated the PV, and broke the HSR.  I again considered a Relay team, the Brothers of NJ, whose 17:07.17 shattered the 4X1Mile in a great race (2 other teams broke the old mark!).

Athletes of the Year:Women
World         GENZEBE DIBABA  She crushed 3 WR's!!  If I were a Committee of 10, she would be my unanimous choice!!
US              SHARON DAY-MONROE  It was close between Day-Monroe and Phyllis Francis.  If Mary Cain had broken even ONE US record, I MIGHT have selected her.  But she didn't.  And I just feel the Pentathlon is a tougher event than the 400.
Collegiate    KENDELL WILLIAMS  Again, I chose the Multi CR breaker over the single-event CR breaker, Francis.  Kaitlin Petrillose was the first Collegian to top 15 feet, but the PV had a great year, and a new record was bound to happen, so I gave less credit than I would if the record had been unexpected.  Also, Williams not only broke the CR (and the Meet, Frosh Class, and age 18 records!), but she did so against stiff competition, as Erica Bougard also broke the former best!!
HS              (I'm going to give TWO awards here, as there is some difference of opinion as to whether Mary Cain is eligible for HSR's because she's a Pro.  I still consider her eligible, but I also respect that several others feel otherwise!  Thus I will offer a "Non-Mary Cain" award, as well as one to her!!)
MARY CAIN  She broke her own incredible HSR's in the 1500 and 1 Mile, adding the 1000 mark to her long list of HSR's.  If considered still a HS'er (and I do!!), then there's no way to NOT make her the AOY!!  2:35.80, 4:06.63, and 4:24.11 (plus major victories at Millrose and USATF!) were WORLD Class marks!!
RAVEN SAUNDERS In the "non-Cain" HS world, this newcomer shocked everyone, first in December, where she improved 11 FEET (!!!) over her 2013 season best, and then added over two and a half feet MORE at NBIN to SHATTER Michelle Carter's venerable HSR in the SP!   There were several other candidates.  Dior Hall finally got the 60H standard she'd been seeking for years!  Desiree Freier was the dominant PV'er, and got the HSR, in a year where the PV was the dominant event!  Tessa Barrett broke the 5000 HSR, but not by enough to really make her a serious AOY candidate.  I also considered Alexa Efraimson, who ran two 1 Miles in "Cain-esque" times, plus ran that 9:00.16 3000 (though that was nullified for being run on an OT!!).  In the end, however, she was just following in Cain's shadow, not leading.  Maybe we've been spoiled by what Cain has done, but a 4:32 (in a race which Cain beat her by 5 seconds!), while an incredible HS time, isn't as earth-shatteringly remarkable as what Cain did in 2013, when the same age and grade as Efraimson is now!

Best Performance: Men
World             The 20-2.50 PV of Lavillenie.  What else?  (Not sure what I would've done if Ashton Eaton had broken the Heptathlon record, especially if it had been by a significant margin!)
US                  Rupp's 13:01.26 5000.  Also considered was Bernard Lagat's 4:54.74 2000 AR, but it's a rarely run event, and the mark was "soft".
Collegiate       Lalang's 3:52.88 mile record.  Not much else out there, and a mile record is a....MILE record!! (If I were to consider Relay teams, Texas A&M's 3:03.20 4X400 at SEC would win easily!!)
HS                 The 17-10.25 of King.  Again, not much else to choose from, at least from male HS individuals!  (Same as with the Collegiates, the 4X1 Mile of Brothers might have taken the prize here, if relays were considered.)

Best Performance: Women
World           It was just a matter of deciding WHICH of Dibaba's 3 WR's was the best.  I chose the 8:16.60 3000.  Close behind was her 3:55.17, with her 2 Mile far back.
US               This one will surprise you, and is sure to be argued with.  I'm going with a Pentathlon.  But it's NOT the 4805 AR of Sharon Day-Monroe!  I've chosen instead Kendell Williams's 4635 CR.  Why?  Day-Monroe's mark was great, and the AR, but she'd produced huge marks before, topping the outdoor Heptathlon US list in 2013.  While Williams had ALSO produced great marks (the HSR's in the outdoor Heptathlon and the indoor Pentathlon, as well as an early season PR of 4302 this year!), this was a HUGE improvement over that 4302, and she's just an 18 year old Frosh!!  Thus, in the battle of Multi's, Williams' 4635 beats Day-Monroe's 4805!!
Collegiate      Obviously, it's Kendell Williams's Pentathlon at the NCAA.
HS                (Once again, I'm offering TWO prizes, the Mary Cain....and the Non-Mary Cain!!)
Cain's best mark, IMHO, was NOT any of her 1500/Miles.  It was her 2:35.80 1000.  A very fast time, even by World standards, and she won over a class field!!  If going by her WINS, and not her times, I'd have to think a bit before deciding.  Finally, I'd give it to her USATF win in 4:07.04.  Again, the time was fast, and she beat a solid field of US runners!  And it was her 2nd consecutive National Indoor Championship.....at the age of 17!!
Raven Saunders's 56-7.50!!  (Or two of her other throws at NBIN, also over Carter's old record!)  It was really no contest, but SOME consideration was given to Efraimson's 4:32.15, Hall's 8.11, and Freier's 14-2.75.

Best Meet
The NBIN.  Solely for the NUMBER of HSR's (and MR's) broken!  Six HSR's and 12 MR's!
NCAA        I chose this one over the SEC, mainly because of its Championship status.
WIC           Again given preference MAINLY for its status as the most "important" meet of the year.
USATF      Our National Championship.  Maybe selected for the excitement and thrills of its controversies as much as for its T&F components!!
Millrose      Once again, this one served as the "indoor Pre Classic", meaning it was the best US Invitational!
(Honorable Mention has to be given to a few European meets, such as Sainsbury, Glasgow, Moscow, as well as to the NB in Boston.)

Best Event
The Pole Vault.  No contest!  With Lavillenie breaking Bubka's WR, Petrillose getting the CR, and King and Freier getting both HSR's, this was the PV's best year in a long time!!
The Multi's.   While not very close to the PV, the WIC Women's Hept was a great competition, as was the NCAA battle between Williams and Bougard.  And then there was Eaton's almost-WR!!
The 3000/2 Mile.    Three races gave this one some weight.  Dibaba's incredible WR, Rupp's 2 Mile AR, and....Gabrielle Grunewald's USATF win.  Yes, the race was slow (9:23), but what happened AFTER the race made this one.....well, unforgettable!!

So, was the 2014 Indoor season a good one?

YES!!
Much better than I thought it would be (despite my rose-colored-glasses series of predictions made on January 2!!).  But it could've been even better!
Too many big names stayed away, and in a WIC year, that's unforgivable!!
A few that DID compete didn't reach the marks they sought.
In the latter category, I must include Cain, who fell short of AR's in the 1000 and 1 Mile.
Jenn Suhr had a so-so year, when compared to her previous Indoor triumphs.
While Lavillenie shined, he got injured, so didn't compete at the WIC.
And Genzebe's sister, Tirunesh, stayed away, as did Meseret Defar.
However, that said, the year was still much better than expected!
When you have....
5 WR's
8 AR's
10 CR's
9 HSR's
....broken in one 3-month season, you must rate it as GREAT!
(Not to mention the QUALITY of some of the records, and the iconic stature of the old record holders!)
Week in and week out, there were records broken, great meets, with startling newcomers and mind-bending controversies to keep things lively!!

Here are some interesting statistics regarding my Honorable Mentions.
Like I said earlier, I am NOT going to list everybody's name, nor their place on my DDD lists.
(Too much work---LOL---and they've already BEEN listed, if you've been reading all of my previous posts!!)
But check these stats out!

Last year (the 2013 season), there were 320 athletes whose marks made it onto, or moved up on, my various DDD's.
This year?
The total is 395.
SOME of this was due to my adding several lists to my DDD's, such as the 600's, and some Relays.
But even with these additions, the number of HM's was BIG!!
Here's the breakdown:

World          There were 44 men who made HM, but just 38 women.
US               Here, the women dominated!  They outscored the men, 65 to 45!!
Collegiate     Again, the women did better than the men, this time by a 57 to 43 score.
HS               And here too, the women outdid the guys, 58 to 45.
The totals?
The women had 218 HM's.  The men, 177.
(Last year, the totals were 168 for the women, 152 for the men!)

In the end, I must say to anyone who feels that Indoor T&F doesn't deserve its rightful place in the World of T&F.....Look at the accomplishments, the athletes, and the events of the 2014 season.

Then tell me Indoor T&F isn't important, exciting, mind-blowing, and passionately competitive!!

My Outdoor Preview will follow, sometime in the next few days.
Look for it!

Six HSR's...and that's not all!

Some on Twitter are calling it the "greatest HS meet ever".
True?
Well, if measured by number of Indoor HSR's broken, I'd say YES!
If measured by number of Meet Records smashed, I'd say a definitive YES!
If compared to how many records were erased in the NCAA, the USATF, or the WIC this year?
I'd say ABSOLUTELY YES!!

There was so MUCH record activity at The Armory during NBIN weekend that it's going to take FOREVER to record it all.

So let's get started, shall we?!

HSR's were broken in the Women's SP, PV, 60H, and 5000.
Men broke HSR's in the 4 X 1Mile Relay and PV.

NBIN (and/or its other-named precursors) Meet Records were broken in the Women's 1500 and 1 Mile, TJ and 60, as well as in the 4 other events listed above.
Men broke Meet Records in the DMR and the 4X200 Relay, in addition to the 2 mentioned above.
So a total of TWELVE Meet Records were broken this year!
(And I'm not counting all the Frosh Class, Junior HS, and Emerging Elite MR's broken also!)

That "mystery" SP'er, Raven Saunders, isn't a mystery anymore!
After over 2 months of seeming hibernation, she returned to competition in a HUGE way, smashing the venerable Michelle Carter's HSR to smithereens, adding an amazing 22 inches to Carter's 2003 mark with her unbelievable 56-7.50 toss!
Not sure if there's a better mark out there somewhere (from Europe in the 80's, maybe??), but right now, Saunders mark is the best I know of for a 17 year old!
(I don't know her birthdate, so if I find out she was 18 today, I'll amend my record book!)
It was, of course, a new Meet Record, and the 12th Grade record.

Ashlie Blake got a big PR too, an excellent 53-10.25, yet finished almost 3 feet behind Saunders in 2nd.
But it makes her 5th A-T HS!

Stamatia Scarvelis finished 3rd, but didn't PR.
However, Lena Giger did, and her 50-0 makes her 20th A-T HS.

Both HSR's in the PV went down this weekend.

Devin King soared 17-10.25, while Desiree Freier sailed over 14-2.75.
King's mark gave him the Meet Record (Natch!) and the Senior Class record.
Freier's mark matches King's, in that she also got the Meet and 12th Grade records.

Following Freier with marks of 13-4.50 were Kelly Long and Olivia Gruver.
They're both in 14th A-T HS, and both are tied with 3 others, including each of them!

BTW, Freier's record has to be rated a bit better than King's, in that it equals the OUTdoor HSR of Morgann LeLeux, while King's falls a few inches short of matching Shawn Barber's OUTdoor HSR.

The 5000's had an interesting reversal of sorts.
Before the meet, I would've given more than even odds that the girls side had more depth than the boys, in addition to having more candidates to get their respective Indoor HSR's.
Well, the 2 races proved me wrong, though not entirely!

Tessa Barrett broke Wesley Frazier's 2013 mark by 6.16.
Her 16:11.85 is the new HSR, as well as a MR and Grade 12 record.
She moved up from 6th on the A-T HS list to 1st.

Stephanie Jenks followed well back in 16:37.50.
Her mark is the new 10th Grade record (breaking Frazier's 16:50.55 from 2011), and places her 6th A-T HS.
Claire Howlett ended 3rd in 16:58.35, and is now 22nd A-T HS.

And Jessica Lawson's 17:08.45 garnered the Frosh Class mark from Samantha Nadel.
A little caveat:
She DID break the NINTH GRADE mark of Nadel's, true, but Brianna Jackucewitz ran a startling 16:43.02 in 2004 as a SEVENTH grader!!
That was then the fastest 5000 indoors by ANY High Schooler, 9th through 12th grades, and was considered the "HSR".
Now it's merely appended to the 9th grade record with an asterisk!

The Boy's winner, Conner Mantz, didn't break the HSR, or the MR, but his 14:24.33 gave him 5th A-T HS.
Depth was prevalent, however, as the next 7 finishers all make my DDD list!!

Aaron Templeton's 14:37.84 is now 10th A-T HS.
Zachary Williams time of 14:48.01 rates him 14th A-T HS.
Elijah Armstrong PR'ed about 6 seconds from his 2013 winning time, his 14:48.72 ranking him 15th A-T HS.
Ryan Forsyth's 14:48.75 rates him 16th A-T HS.
Colin Martin ran 14:49.32 for 17th A-T HS.
Patrick Tucker's 14:51.33 rates him 21st A-T HS.
Finally (!!), Stephen Garrett ran 14:53.38 for 24th A-T HS!!

She did it!!!
Dior Hall, after 3 years of being THIS close, finally broke Jackie Coward's venerable HSR of 8.16, running an excellent 8.11.
It also gives her the Meet and 12th Grade records, obviously.
I have to say, this record made ME the happiest of all of them.
This was her LAST chance to get it, and she NAILED it in a huge runaway victory!!

Quenee' Dale sprinted 8.35, yet finished 0.24 behind Hall.
Her 8.35 gives her 14th A-T HS, but tied with 3 others.
Alexis Duncan's 8.37 rates her 20th A-T HS, tied with 1 other.

Three MR's in the Relays went down this weekend.
Biggest and best was the HSR of Brothers TC of NJ in the 4 X 1 Mile event.
They smashed the old mark of 17:20, which was also the MR, with their 17:07.17.
Two other teams also broke the HSR!

MR's went down also in the Boys DMR, Cardinal O'Hara TC running 10:00.75, while Union Catholic from NJ cracked the 4X200 for boys with their 1:27.04.

The Two Mile races produced a total of 7 new placings on my DDD lists.

Tessa Barrett came back from her 5000 HSR with another great effort.
She won the 2 Mile with her 10:08.05, which places her 5th A-T HS.
Audrey Belf followed in 10:10.90, ranking her 11th A-T HS.
Annie Heffernan was next in 10:12.02, moving her to 12th A-T HS.
Makena Morley also gets on the list, her 10:21.85 ranking her 24th A-T HS.

So what happened to favored Hannah Debalsi?
She fell with less than 400 to go, yet got up and finished in a very good 10:17.
She led much of the way, and probably would've challenged Barrett for the win, had she not fallen.
Glad she got up and finished, in an excellent time, considering!!

The boys race was won by a Canadian.
Canadians can run at NBIN, but they can't set records, as this is considered a USA High School Championship meet.
In 2nd, the first American was Paul Hogan, whose 8:59.82 ranks him 20th A-T HS Indoors.
Then came Aaron Templeton's 8:59.95, placing him 21st A-T HS.
Next was Tim McGowan's 9:00.20, which makes him 23rd A-T HS.
Charles Cooper was the victorious Canadian, running 8:59.61.

The Pentathlons produced 5 new list placings, but no records.
Shaina Burns winning Women's mark of 3706 makes her 8th A-T HS.
The Boys winner, Gabriel Moore, scored 4054 points, making him 5th A-T HS.

Three other boys also made the Top 24, with Jack Lint's 3946 making him 11th A-T HS, Steele Wasik's 3882 making him 17th A-T HS, and Nick Fofana's 3838 giving him 19th place A-T HS.

The Men's 200 final was a blazer!
Trentavis Friday sprinted the 2nd fastest Indoor 200 ever, his 20.97 also the new MR.
Next was Darryl Haraway's 21.15 (after a heat-leader of 21.36!), which ranks him 9th A-T HS, tied with 1 other.
Haraway's earlier 21.36 had ranked him 21st, so he improved 12 places with his final!

Not to be overlooked was the 21.50 of Noah Lyles.
That mark broke the Soph Class record!!

Gabriele Figueroa's winning mark wasn't a PR, but two others made advancements.
Nyla Woods 60-0.50 WT is now 11th A-T HS.
Mohogony Baker's 59-9.50 is 12th A-T HS.

America's powerhouse TJ'er of the Future, Keturah Orji, won with her 44-2 Meet Record, and keeps her in 2nd A-T HS, where she'd been with an earlier 44-0.
She also won the LJ, but no PR, and no records.

BTW, she's tweeted that she'll be rooming with new NCAA Heptathlon Champion, Kendell Williams, at the University of Georgia next fall!!
That will be one BEAST of a dorm room!!

Nate Moore won the LJ with his 25-9.75 mark.
It ranks him 14th A-T HS.
He also doubled, his TJ mark of 50-8.75 making him 19th A-T HS.

Makiah Briscoe won the 60, her 7.26 garnering the Meet Record, as well as 6th A-T HS, tied with 4 others.
Hannah Cunliffe improved to 7.30 in 2nd, making her 14th A-T HS, tied with 3 others.

Trentavis Friday won the Men's 60 in 6.64, for 7th A-T HS, tied with 5 others.

Richard Rose's 400 of 47.34 is 16th A-T HS.
Olivia Baker's 53.49 is 10th A-T HS.
(She also anchored the 4X400 Relay in a reported 52.9!)

Derek Holdsworth ran 1:51.72 in the 800 for 18th A-T HS.

The other 800, the Women's, was taken by last year's Mile winner, superstar Elise Cranny.
She ran splits of 61 and 65 for a time of 2:06.47, and 9th A-T HS.

This was a much-ballyhooed appearance in an odd-for-her distance, as she's best known for her 4:15.07 1500 in 2013 against Collegians, and her 2nd to Alexa Efraimson in the Nike XC Summit last fall, with Sarah Baxter added to the mix!
Word was that she would go head-to-head with Efraimson in the Mile, but then she announced she was running the 800 instead.
Still, a decent effort for one who trains (and races) mostly at altitude!

Efraimson, meanwhile, did win the mile, but after her spectacular 9:00.16 3000 on Seattle's OT, and her mid-pack finish in the Millrose Elite Mile in 4:32.15 (a few seconds behind....Mary Cain!!), a race between her and Cranny got fans salivating at what COULD be!!

Alas, she soloed to an easy 4:38.46 Meet Record, getting the 1500 MR enroute with her 4:21.18.

It wasn't a race, but 2nd was Millie Paladino in 4:43.84, making her 11th A-T HS.
Her 1500 was 4:26.20, making her 12th A-T HS (tied with 1 other) on that list.

Third was Kennedy Weisner in 4:45.20, making her 17th A-T HS.
However, she was ahead of Paladino at 1500, so her 4:25.65 there makes her 10th A-T HS on that list.

Zola Golden sprinted her 400 prelim in 54.12, making her 21st A-T HS.

Remember 8th Grader Gabrielle Wilkinson?
Well, she doubled in the JHS 800 and the Emerging Elite Mile.
Her times were good, 2:12.86 (for a heat winner, but 4th place overall) and 5:00.85, a race she won.
The latter was a MR.
(She passed 1500 in a reported 4:43.04, which makes her final 109 meters a quite good 17.81.)
The 800 also broke the MR for that class, but 3 others got there first!
Not bad, eh?

Once again, I have a couple of Road Racing marks to relate.

In the NYC Half-Marathon today, two "half" rookies, Sally Kipyego and Molly Huddle, scored big.
Kipyego won the race with her debut 1:08.30.
Huddle was with her much of the way, but faded a bit, ending in the 4th fastest-ever US 13.1 Mile time of 1:09:04!!

So, WAS the NBIN of 2014 the best HS meet EVER??
After reading the above, YOU decide!!!

NCAA--Records, Records, and the Ducks win Two!

Having lived in Eugene from June 1987 through March 1998 (then moving to Lincoln City on the coast, but returning often for all the BIG track meets), I can say I was THRILLED "my" Duckies won both the Men's and Women's meet at the NCAA.
But this blog ain't about team victories--not even when the Ducks win TWICE!!
(No, I'm NOT finished rubbing it in yet!!  LOL)

Anyway, besides UO winning BOTH meets (sic!), the records and the marks are what REALLY made the 2014 NCAA one of the best!

I'll start with the American Record!!
That's right, an All-Time United States Indoor Record!!
And it wasn't by the person who I' thought most likely to break it!

Oregon's Phyllis Francis broke Francena McCorory's AR of 50.54 with her winning 50.46.
It also broke McCorory's Collegiate Record, Meet Record, and moved Fran down to 2nd A-T Collegian!
It also broke McCorory's Collegiate Senior Class record!
And she won by a HUGE margin!!
She had run a fast heat, time of 51.29, which placed her 11th A-T Collegian (tied with 1 other).
Of course, her final nullified those stats!

Three other Collegiate Records were broken in Albuquerque, also on the women's side.

Kendell Williams, just an 18 year old frosh (at the University of Georgia), shattered her own PR (4302, from earlier this year), by over 300 points, scaling Mt Pentathlon to the height of a CR 4635 points!
In a spectacular display, she broke all 5 of her Pent. PR's.
And she did it, going against a woman who ALSO broke the CR!!
Makeba Alcide's 2013 mark of 4569 was also beaten by Erica Bougard, who scored 4586.

Williams, besides the CR, also got the Collegiate Frosh Class record, the Age 18 record, and became 5th A-T US!
Bougard got the Collegiate Junior Class record, is now 2nd A-T Collegiate, and 6th A-T US!

This Pentathlon produced 3 more A-T Collegiate list placers, and 2 A-T US list placers.

Brittany Harrell scored 4287 points, making her 18th A-T Collegiate, and 22nd A-T US.
Lucie Ondraschkova's 4268 makes her 20th A-T Collegiate.
And Deanna Latham scored 4253, making her 24th on both the A-T Collegiate and US lists!

Another CR came in the meet-ending (and meet-WINNING) Women's 4X400 Relay.
The Oregon Ducks won a real squeaker over Texas, both teams breaking the old CR (set by another Texas squad in 2003) of 3:27.66.
Oregon's 3:27.40 is the new CR, as well as the new Meet Record.
Texas ran 3:27.42, making them the # 2 School on the A-T Indoor Collegiate list!
(Phyllis Francis anchored in 50.64!)

Two other teams made the A-T Collegiate list.
Penn State's 3:33.13 makes them # 14 School on the list.
USC (Southern California) ran 3:33.20 to become the 15th fastest School!

The third other Collegiate Record (There were FOUR of them, remember!!)came in the Women's Pole Vault!
Kaitlin Petrillose vaulted 15-1 to break Tina Sutej's 2012 mark of 14-11, as well as the Meet Record of 14-10.25 by Amy Linnen, dating from 2002.
It's also the Collegiate Soph Class record, and makes Petrillose 8th A-T US as well!

Emily Grove vaulted a PR of 14-7.25, making her 9th A-T Collegian, tied with 5 others.

The Women's 60's, both hurdles and flat, produced good marks.

Ramona Burchell was the shocking winner of the 60 flat.
Have no idea who she is, or whether she's American or not.
But her winning time of 7.11 is now 3rd A-T Collegiate!!

And she beat Dezerea Bryant's 7.12, which makes her 4th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other.
Bryant is also now 19th A-T American, tied with 3 others.
Jasmine Todd also ran good, her 7.16 making her 16th A-T Collegian, tied with 3 others.

There was almost a 4-way tie in the 60H.
They gave it to another unknown, Sharika Nelvis.
She ran 7.93, making her suddenly 6th A-T Collegian, tied with 1 other.
That "1 other" happens to be the 2nd placer, Tiffani McReynolds, whose 7.93......well, see the previous sentence!!  LOL

Behind those 2 came the two "knowns", Jasmine Stowers and Kendra Harrison, who each improved their PR's to 7.94.s.
They both are 8th A-T Collegian, tied with 4 others, including each other!!
(I hope that made sense!  LOL)

Dezerea Bryant won the 200 with a PR time of 22.69, moving her up 2 spots on the A-T Collegiater list, to 12th place.
She's also now 12th on the A-T US list.

In the Men's 200, Deondre Batson edged out Dedric Dukes, 20.32 to 20.34.
This moves both onto the A-T World DDD list
Batson is 10th A-T World, tied with 2 others.
Dukes is 13th A-T World.
Batson is 7th A-T US, also tied with 2 others.
Dukes is 10th A-T US.
They are 6th and 7th A-T Collegiate, respectively.

The 60 flat winner, Dentarius Locke, is now 11th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others, with his 6.52.
In prelim races, Cameron Burrell and Batson ran 6.54's, which makes them equal-15th A-T Collegian, tying them each with 9 others, including each other!

The Men's 60H winning time of 7.57 by Omar McLeod makes him 14th A-T Collegiate, but more significantly, gives him the Collegiate Frosh Class record too!

Shawn Barber, who has dual-US and Canadian citizenship, but who competes as a Canadian, broke the Canadian Indoor record with his winning 18-10.25 PV.
It also makes him 6th A-T Collegiate!

As I've stated several times already, my Multi's lists are still not finished!
Thus, any records or places---especially the latter--I mention MIGHT be wrong.
Corrections, if necessary, will be made later.

That said, Curtis Beach PR'ed in the Heptathlon with his winning 6190 score..
This makes him (??) 2nd A-T Collegian, and moves him from 11th to 8th A-T US.

Maicel Uibo's 2nd place score of 6044 makes him 7th A-T Collegiate!

The Men's LJ has been in a bit of a dark corner recently, but Jarrion Lawson's winning 27-6.50 might light some fires again.
He becomes # 4 A-T Collegian, #8 A-T US, and even moves him onto the World list, at # 15 A-T.

Lorraine Ugen won the LJ by more than a foot (!!), her 22-1 leap making her 8th A-T Collegian.

James Harris, who also runs a fair 400, won the HJ with a super PR of 7-7.25.
He's now 15th A-T US, though tied with a massive TEN others (!!).
And he's 8th A-T Collegiate, but tied with just 1 other.

The WT and SP produced a quartet of worthy marks.

Christina Hillman won the SP with her 59-6.75 toss.
This makes her 8th A-T Collegiate, and 17th A-T US.
Valentina Mazaric, a Croatian, threw 58-8.50, making her 16th A-T Collegiate.

Ida Storm threw the WT 71-10.25 in a non-winning effort, but she did win 22nd place A-T Collegiate as a consolation prize!

Nick Miller threw the "indoor hammer" 75-8.25, making him 16th A-T Collegiate.

In the final Men's event, their 4X400 Relay (The women's 4X400 was THE final event of the meet!), 3 teams ran marks worth noting.
Nebraska ran 3:05.25, making them the 18th fastest Collegiate School.
Pittsburg's team ran 3:06.31 for 21st best School.
And NC (North Carolina) ran 3:06.49 for 24th place on my Collegiate DDD list.

Finally (!!!), I need to mention a mark that was NOT at the NCAA.
In fact, it wasn't in the state of New Mexico either.
And it wasn't on a track or in a field either!

Shalane Flanagan set a new 15K American Road record at the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Florida!
She ran 47:03, breaking Deena Kastors 11-year old mark of 47:15.
And she really went after it!!

She split 15:29 for her first 5000, which, if continued, would have broken the A-T WORLD mark!!!
But she slowed just a bit, to 15:40 for her next 5K, then to 15:54.
Not bad when you consider that 2nd place was over 2 minutes back!!

Think she's ready to blast a fast Boston??

Well, that's it from the NCAA.
Tomorrow night, after the High School NBIN 3-day affair is over, I'll have another full report of all the records and great marks.

And there are ALREADY many records and marks to report from The Armory!!
See you then!
Enjoy the meet!

NBIN--Meet Record Possibles

Wish I could come up with a more original title, but winning the Pulitzer Prize for Best Title isn't my purpose here!
What IS my purpose is to hint at which Meet Records might fall at this weekend's New Balance Indoor Nationals meet for High Schoolers, being held at The Armory from tomorrow through Sunday, and to give a few candidates for the honors.

First, let me tell you why the women's list of MR possibilities is far longer than the men's.
It's very simple, really.
The female side of HS T&F is in a sort of Renaissance.
It has been for a few years now.
Led by middle and long distance runners, it also covers a wide swath of other events.
And it's more than a few SUPER stars, like Mary Cain, Keturah Orji, Wesley Frazier et al.
The DEPTH in the running events is......DEEP!  (Gee, how profound!  LOL)
I'm sure in future years the boys will prevail, while the girls weaken.
T&F goes in cycles, and right now, and maybe starting with the emergence of Cain in 2012, it's the girls who are dominant.

That said, here's the NBIN Meet Record possibles for 2014.

Men
200         Zyaire Clemens and Trentavis Friday have the best shot at the 21.07 MR.
400         Clemens, Rai Benjamin, Abdur-Rahmaan Kelly, and 600 specialist Richard Rose have a chance at the 46.57 MR.  But none have ever broken 47....yet.
1 Mile      Millrose winner Luke Gavigan, Garrett O'Toole, and soph Austin Tamagno will aim for the 4:05.50 MR.
5000       The 2013 NBIN Champion was Elijah Armstrong, in 14:54.  Nowhere near Lukas Verzbicas MR of 14:06.78.  But he's good, and might be ready for a huge breakthrough!
60H        The only name I recognized was OUTdoor 110H leader Marlon Humphrey.  7.60 is tough, but Humphrey has a fair shot.
4X400R  Relays are hard to predict.  A few teams (in ANY relay, not just this one) might have one superstar to anchor, but most successful teams have a BALANCE between the 4 runners, with maybe a slight edge given to those who have both balance AND a star anchor!  It seems MR's in Relay events--boys and girls--happen more frequently than you expect, looking at the team's make-up.  That said, THIS Relay has Richard Rose, the 600 leader, probably anchoring the Boys & Girls--NY team.  B&G always have great Relay squads, so you won't go wrong here picking B&G for a MR.
PV        Devin King.  He's the 2014 Indoor leader, and already has an OUTdoor mark of 17-4!  The MR of 17-6 appears in BIG trouble!!
WT      The MR is one of those otherworldly tosses by HSR holder Colin McCullough!  You know, those NINETY-plus feet throws of his from 2009.  Forget THAT!!  But Daniel Haugh has an excellent chance of surpassing 80 feet!!  (Still a winning distance for WT guys in the HS ranks!!)

Women
60         Hannah Cunliffe has a shot at the 7.29 MR.  Watch for Ky Westbrook also.
200       Westbrook.
400       Francena McCorory's 51.93 is safe.  But Olivia Baker might run 52.5 or thereabouts.
800       Elise Cranny's 2013 PR was an altitude-aided 2:08.50.  The MR is Sabrina Southerland's 2:03.59.  At last year's NBIN, Cranny improved her mile PR from 4:58 to 4:40!  Watch for her to make a similar improvement here in the 800.  Can she challenge Mary Decker (Slaney's) HSR of 2:01.8??  Look for 2013 600 leader (1:30.35) Emma Gallagher to be her prime foe, with possibly Maddie Berkson taking 3rd.  But they should be FAR back!!
1 Mile    Alexa Efraimson is in the same world as Cranny.  (And creeping up QUITE close to.....Mary Cain!!!)  No contest here as to who wins.  Only question is, can she SOLO a 4:28??  The odds would be MUCH stronger with Cranny in the race, but they've chosen to run separate events.  That said, she should EASILY get Cranny's MR of 4:40.62.  Stephanie Jenks and Kennedy Weisner have a fair shot at going under 4:40....but just barely!
2 Mile     Melody Fairchild's iconic MR (though the meet then had a different name!) of 9:55.92 MIGHT get chipped at by 10:12 girl Hannah Debalsi.  But here the MR isn't the focus.  This should be one of the best RACES of the meet, with Debalsi going against Caroline Alcorta, Tessa Barrett, and Bella Burda.
5000     Last year's NBIN 5000 had that "Race of the Century" odor to it.  Wesley Frazier won by a hair in 16:18.01 (to Erin Finn's 16:18.02), the MR.  That mark could be challenged by Burda, Barrett, Jenks, Claire Howlett, and....Ryen Frazier, who happens to be Wesley's younger sister!!
60H     If Dior Hall doesn't FINALLY get the HSR of 8.16 (and the MR of 8:17), I'm going to cry!!  She's been THIS close to it for TWO YEARS now!!  Come on, Dior, CRUSH it!!  (It's her last chance, as she's a senior!!)
the Relays (See the Men's report above!)  That said, watch Team Jet Fast in the 4X400, as they have Olivia Baker.  In the 4X800, Benjamin Cardozo (NY) has Denise Branch, and you NEVER underestimate Cardozo teams!!  Also in that relay, West Springfield TC (VA) has Caroline Alcorta!!  And the 4X1M has the West Springfield team (again with Alcorta) going head-to-head with Staples TC (CT), who have....Hannah Debalsi!!  Hopefully they'll be close enough to have a SUPER duel over the final "mile" (1600)!
HJ       This event has a relatively easy MR of 6-0, dating from the "old" NBIN (by another name!) of 1984!!  The 2014 version has 6-1 outdoor jumper Cyre Virgo!
LJ & TJ     Keturah Orji.  The MR's are 20-7.25 and her own 43-11.50.  She's jumped 20-11.75 and 44-11 OUTdoors (last year).
PV       Desiree Freier has been the dominant PV'er this year.  She's the indoor leader, and already the OUTdoor leader!!  She's gone 14-0.  So that 14-2 MR doesn't look TOO hard!!
SP      This has the BEST field of ALL the events in the meet!!  The 3 best throwers in the nation are here!!
Stamatia Scarvelis, Ashlie Blake, and the mysterious but fascinating Raven Saunders will shoot it out.  The MR is also the HSR, that 54-9.50 by Michelle Carter!  Take your pick!  But where has Saunders been since that SHOCKING 53-8.25 back in December??  Haven't seen her name in results sheets since then!!  One event to definitely look forward to!!
WT      The MR is tough, as it's also the HSR of Shelby Ashe (68.2.50) from 2011.  But Gabby Figueroa has been improving fast and furious this year, all the way to 64-11....so far.
Pent.     The MR (and HSR) of iconic Kendell Williams will NOT be broken in 2014.  But Alexa Harmon-Thomas should win this event easily!
1 Mile Walk     I don't normally mention the walks, but this year will see Maria Michta's kid-sister, Katie, win this one....in a walk!!  (Thank you, thank you!!  LOL)

Another segment of the NBIN I don't talk about (or KNOW much about!) are the Junior HS and Emerging Elites segments.
However, this year has one outstanding athlete worth a mention.
Her name is Gabrielle Wilkinson, and she's an 8th grader from Pennsylvania.
A few weeks ago, she ran a 1000 in 2:51.71.  Impressed?  Well, after you find out that the NINTH grade record is 2:50.84, you might be.  No??  Well, how about if you find out that that 9th Grade record is held by.....Mary Cain??  NOW....you're impressed!!  Well, Ms Wilkinson is entered in the JHS Mile and the EE 800.  The MR's for each are 5:18.70 and 2:14.26.  Think she can get them??

I'll end this post with a name.
She's entered in the 4X200R on the Cheltenham TC (PA) team.
That means each girl SPRINTS her leg!!
The girl's name is.....Jariel SLOWLY!!

I kid you not!!

Enjoy the meets (NCAA and NBIN), and watch for my report(S) soon after they end!!

NCAA--Meet Record Possibles

I'm not going to predict which, if any, HSR's or CR's will fall at the New Balance Indoor Nationals or the NCAA meets.
I won't even predict who's going to win each event, or which teams will win at the NC's.
(But.....Go DUCKS!!!)

Anyway, these pre-meet(s) posts will offer up those events where the MEET Records MIGHT fall, and the likely candidates to break them.
I'll start with the "adults", the Collegians.
(The NBIN report will follow in a separate post!)
The NCAA meet is in Albuquerque, NM, and starts tomorrow, ends Saturday.

Men
60          The MR of 6.51 MIGHT be tied by Cameron Burrell, Aaron Brown, Prezell Hardy, or Dentarius Locke.
400      I doubt the MR will fall--It's also the WORLD Record!!!--but Deon Lendore and Arman Hall could go sub-45.
800       Edward Kemboi has the best chance at the 1:45.33 MR.  He's the only one with a sub-1:46 time, albeit on an OT!
1 Mile   Lawi Lalang.  But if he doubles (or triples!!), he'll probably run just to win.
3000    Lalang and Edward Cheserek.  Besides them doubling, there's also the altitude factor.  But if anyone is going to break 7:45, it will be these two.
5000    Lalang & Cheserek.  (See the 3000.)
60H     Eddie Lovett.  If he gets the MR (or even the CR!!), please don't say "Gotta Lov-ett!".
4X400R     Texas A&M, Florida & LSU should provide a thrilling race, if not a record-shattering one!
DMR   Just about EVERY team has a chance at the 9:27.77 MR!!  Should be a CLASSIC!!
PV       Sam Kendricks, Shawn Barber, and Andrew Irwin all have a fair chance at the 19-2.25 MR.
SP       This one's a toughie at 71-3.25 (Ryan Whiting!!), but Ryan Crouser is a possibility, even though his best is "just" 69-8.
WT     Amazing that the MR isn't over 80 feet.  But Michael Lihrman and Chuk Enekwechi might take care of that!

Women
60       The MR of 7.09 is tough, but Dezerea Bryant is a superstar in the making, and might at least tie it!
200     Kamaria Brown and Bryant are prime candidates to get Bianca Knight's venerable MR (and CR!!) of 22.40!
400    Again, the MR is hard to beat, it being 50.54 by Francena McCorory.  But Ashley Spencer has the wheels.  Only question is, can she steer them around ABQ's oval fast enough to get that mark?
800    We're talking MR, not the CR!!  In that regard, Laura Roesler is almost certain to get the 2:01.77 MR of Hazel Clark, now 15 years in the past!  Competition could come from Megan Malasarte, Ejiroghene Okoro, as well as super-frosh Sabrina Southerland.
1 Mile    Cory McGee ran 4:06.67 last year for a WC qualifier.  That's equal to about 4:24 for the mile.
The MR is 4:29.72 by Sarah Bowman (Brown).
3000/5000  The same goes for Abbey D'Agostino's chances as stated above for Lalang & Cheserek in the same events.  With her doubling, and the altitude, the MR's appear safe another year!
4X400R     Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, and Oregon could ALL get the MR of 3:27.66 (by Texas in 2003).  Wouldn't it be something if the FOURTH place team ran 3:26??!!
DMR    This MR is VERY tough, it being also the CR.  There's several great teams here, but NONE of them have that Pro-level miler who can clinch the record!!  So this mark appears safe, while the RACE looks like a barnburner!
TJ   Shaneika Thomas has an outside chance at the MR of 46-9.  She's the only one with a PR over 46.
PV  The Collegiate Women's PV this year is VERY strong.  Emily Grove, Morgann Leleux, Kaitlin Petrillose, Megan Clark, Martina Schultze & Natalia Bartnovskaya all have a fair shot at that 14-10.50 MR.
Pent.    Erica Bougard and Kendell Williams should go 1-2 (in no particular order!!), but might fall short of the 4550 MR by Brianna Thiesen (Eaton).

The NBIN report will follow shortly.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Now that you know I'm a Clint Eastwood fan, let's get on to my Sopot report.
And to tell the truth, it's much LESS than I was hoping for, or even thought would be!
For example, there were ZERO meet records broken!  (I'll explain the Men's 4X400 Relay "record" in a moment!)
Out of 26 total events, there are 4 Meet Records each from 2012 and 2010 that remain on the books!

And it's not solely because Lavillenie or Bolt or Merritt (Aries or LaShawn) or Isinbayeva wasn't there.
And it's not because the meet records are too tough.
A few are, but many could be broken by the right person with a good effort.

Since this blog concerns itself with records and marks, and so measures the success or failure of a meet by how many top level marks there are, I'd say this meet was NOT one of the best championship meets!

But it was good enough.
And here's the marks that made it so.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran 6.98, giving her the Age 27 record, and making her 7th A-T World!!

Omo Osaghae's 7.45 60H win made him 14th A-T US, but missed by just 0.01 making my Top 24 World list!

Gerald Phirl's 6.52 60 makes him the Zambian National record holder.
Bingtian Su's 6.52 gives him the Chinese National record.

Pavel Maslek's 45.24 is the new Czech record.

Chris Brown TWICE set Age 35 records, his final mark breaking his heat mark!
He ran 45.84, then 45.58.

Once again, I must offer a caveat about my Relay records.
My lists are not complete yet, so these placings (on lists) might change soon.
(I should be done sometime this week!)

That said, The USA's 3:24.83 SEEMS to be 2nd best Nation All-Time.
(I believe there's a better time the US ran, so take the above with a grain of salt.....for now!)

But I AM sure that Jamaica broke its National record with its 3:26.54!
That's their women's team!
Jamaica's Men's team ALSO got their National record, running 3:03.69.
The US is # 2 team, and Jamaica is # 3 team indoors!

Now for the USA's so called World Record of 3:02.13, their winning time today.
There's a US All-Star team that ran 3:01.96 in Fayetteville  in 2006
But according to reliable sources, that mark was NOT accepted as the WR because proper drug tests weren't done after the race.
But my TAFWA All-Time World Indoor List 2011 book lists it as the best time!!
There's no asterisk attached because of drug-related questions!
Thus, I'm accepting that mark as the World Record, even though others see it as the American Record, but not the World Record!
(And people wonder why T&F has a fan drought in the US!!)

Chanelle Price ran a great 800, winning in 2:00.09, for 11th A-T US.

Treniere Moser's 4:07.84 is a PR, but doesn't change her 8th A-T US position.
Nicole Sifuentes ran 4:07.61 for the Canadian National record!

Ashton Eaton missed his own WR by just 13 points in the Heptathlon!
But his 6632 tally gives him the Age 26 record.

His wife, Brianna Thiesen-Eaton, did him one better!
Her 4768 Pentathlon mark gives her the Canadian National record.
It also ties her at 24th A-T World, with 1 other.

And the Pentathlon winner, Nadine Broersen, got the Netherlands record with her total of 4830 points.
She's also now 11th A-T World!

Valerie Adams 67-9.50 is the Age 29 record.

Thomas Walsh's 69-9.25 is the new New Zealand National record!

Mutaz Barshim's 7-9.75 is the new Qatar National record.
He's 10th A-T World, but tied there with 6 others!

Andriy Protsenko's 7-8.75 ties him at 23rd A-T World, with 7 others!!

Jirina Svodorova's 15-5 PV ties her at 19th A-T World, with 3 others.

Mauro da Silva's 27-2 LJ is the Brazilian Indoor National record.
And Louis Tsatoumas's 26-8 is the Age 32 record!

And that's it!!
From the WORLD Indoor CHAMPIONSHIP meet!!!

Wait and see....the NCAA will produce more marks worthy of note, as will the High School NBIN, both next weekend!

While the marks were lacking, the excitement, thrills, the upsets, the shockers, were not!
A few of the "good, bad, and the ugly".

All those DQ's!!
I lost count, but it has to be at or near double digits!!
Either bad officiating, or just a bunch of "accidents"?

The saddest DQ was probably Heather Kampf's!
She not only somehow got knocked down, but finished dead last, then got DQ'ed!!

And what about all those "false starts" in the Women's 4X400 Relay??
None of the women were at fault.
It turned out to be faulty blocks (or the wiring being loose or something), so the race was started about 4 or 5 times before it took off for real!!
All of it for the whole world to see!

As for "failures", Ajee Wilson ran so-so.
Anita Hinriksdottir ran good (a PR of 2:01.03), but got DQ'ed also!

Another sad story was that of Gabe Grunewald.
We all know what happened to her at USATF!.
Then, for whatever reason, she runs poorly in the final, finishing well back.
Shannon Rowbury didn't do much better!

Ivan Ukhov's loss to Barshim was maybe the biggest shocker.
Ukhov was supposed to try for the WR in Sopot.
Never got the chance!!

Jenn Suhr continued her below-average season!

And what about that tie for the Gold medal in the Women's HJ??
The athletes themselves chose not to have a jump-off.
Many have complained, wanting a clear winner to emerge!
Did these 2 beautiful and talented women cheat us?

Bottom line?
With no Meet records, and no World Records, and with several stars not competing, and with the distance races (1500's and 3000's) being those maddening jog-then-sprint affairs, the Sopot edition of the WIC wasn't the worst, but was nowhere near the best!!!

Coming next week, the NCAA and the NB Indoor Nationals for High Schoolers!
Should be........I said SHOULD be!!.......two great meets!!

WIC Predictions (But no money bet!)

Well, I done dood it!
I gathered my brain, my habit of stepping in doggy do while checking out the pretty girl across the street, and about 3 pounds of courage, and have made my Top 3 picks for the World Indoor Championships.
Without further ado, and with minimal commentary, here they are (in order of place--1st, 2nd, 3rd)).

Men

60          Bracy          Kimmons          Carter
400        Gordon       Santos               Brown (One for us Old Farts!!)
800        Aman          Sowinski           Kszczot
(Symmonds just hasn't shown the record-breaking shape he predicted in December!)
1500      Willis           Kiplagat            Leer
3000      Lagat           Gebrhiwet         Gebremeskel
(Went with Lagat, but NOT just because he's an Old Fart!!  LOL.  And I went against Rupp more because of emotional rather than rational reasons.  I'm just not in Salazar's camp right now!  Though if Mary Cain were running, I'd make an exception for her!!)
60H       Martinot-Legarde     Osaghae     Shubenkov
HJ         Ukhov          Kynard             Barshim
(Wish Bondarenko could be there!!)
LJ         Saladino       Menkov            Li
(Taking a big chance going against Menkov for Gold!)
TJ        Pichardo       Reve                 Carter
PV       Mohr            Broz                  Wojciechowski
(Also wish Lavillenie were there!!)
SP       Whiting          Majewski          Storl
(Picked Majewski over Storl mainly because of home field advantage!)
Hept    Eaton            Warner              Kasyanov
(Will Eaton get the WR??  Meaning his own!!  YES!!  Question is, by how much??)
4X400R   USA        Bahamas            GB

Overall, my picks add up to the following medal count for USA:

Gold        5
Silver       4
Bronze     2

Women

60          Campbell-Brown     Ahoure      Fraser-Pryce
(VCB has more to prove than the others.  SAFP hasn't been like her outdoor self.)
400        McCorory               Miller         George
800        Wilson                     Muir          Price
(All 3 having great seasons!  Should be one of the most competitive races in Sopot!))
1500      Aregawi                   Moser        Kampf
(Would've given Cain even odds with Aregawi!!  BUT......!!  Moser best of rest.  Kampf given 3rd more for sentimentality for Grunewald, who is a fellow Minnesotan with Kampf!)
3000      Dibaba                    Grunewald      Obiri
(Dibaba's a solid lock!  Throw away the key!  Only negative is she's said she's running for the win there, not for time!  As for Gabe, it's part sympathy for her Salazar/USATF ordeal, but part talent.  She HAS what it takes!!)
60H        Pearson                  Ali                 DeLoach Soukup
(Wish Rollins had decided to compete!!)
HJ          Vlasic                     Beitia             Kuchina
(Picked Blanka mainly so I could see her post-win celebration!!  LOVE that gal!!!)
LJ         Johnson-Thompson      Polk           Biryukina
(Picked the Brit out of sympathy for her NOT getting picked for the British Hept squad!!)
TJ         Saladuha                   Koneva         Williams
PV        Rogowska                Suhr               Bleasdale
(Again, home field advantage for the Pole!  Suhr not quite the Suhr of past years!  And wish Isi were there!)
SP        Adams                      Carter             Schwanitz
Pent      Day-Monroe           Theisen-Eaton       Melnichenko
4X400R      USA                 GB                   Russia

Gold               4
Silver              6
Bronze            3

Overall, I've picked 9 Golds, 10 Silvers, and 5 Bronze medals for the US.
Too many?
Too few?

We'll begin finding out just 14.5 hours from right now!!
Next post might not be until the end of the meet on Sunday!
But guaranteed, it will include EVERYTHING you'll want to know about it!!

Missed Marks....and Opportunities

Wanting to clear the decks before the first race of the World Indoor Championships in Sopot--about 39 hours from now---I'm presenting this "extra" blog post.
Here's a few marks:

At the BU Last Chance meet a few days ago, David Torrence won a great 1000 meters in the American Record time of 2:16.76.
This was also the Age 28 record for indoors.
And it places him 8th A-T on the World list, though tied with 1 other.

Second in that race was Canadian Nate Brannen, whose 2:16.87 is a Canadian National record.
It's also the Age 31 record.
And he is now 10th A-T World!

Last but not least, Rich Peters of Boston University (natch!) ran a new Collegiate Record of 2:18.55, breaking Rob Creese's 2:19.53 from 2012.
It's of course the Collegiate Senior Class record too!

In a great solo 5000 (2nd was over 30 seconds behind!), Molly Huddle ran the 3rd fastest time by a US woman indoors, 15:13.86.
And it's 24th best on the World list!
Not bad for a "rust-buster" (as she called it!).

Katrina Coogan, Mark's daughter, ran the mile in 4:33.44, which makes her 21st A-T Collegian.

Finally, at that same meet, a great Men's Collegiate DMR duel took place.
Villanova beat Georgetown, 9:28.06 to 9:29.11.
Villanova is now the # 3 school on the A-T Collegiate Indoor list.
Georgetown is now 6th on that same list.

Deon Lendore's 45.03 at the SEC meet wasn't just a PR.
It was also the Trinidad National record, breaking his own mark.
It's the new Age 21 record.
And it's the Collegiate Junior Class record!

Three new HS marks worth mentioning:

Hannah Debalsi ran a fast 2 mile, her time of 10:12.95 the 12th best A-T HS Indoors.

Gabby Figueroa improved her WT to 64-11, which moves her from 3rd A-T HS to 2nd!

And Adam Kelly improved his WT out to 79-1.25, which moves him 1 spot on the A-T HS list, from 12th to 11th.

Now for a few "editorial" comments.

Still waiting to hear Alberto Salazar apologized to Gabe Grunewald and Andrew Bumbalough, as well as to the USATF officials and the fans who witnessed his ugly behavior at our National Championship meet.

Also waiting for Salazar to withdraw his protest that DQ'ed Bumbalough.
He attacked the wrong guy!!

Speaking of withdrawals, though of a different nature, Mary Cain has withdrawn from the WIC 1500 because of some pain in her calf.
This is major for the US team, as she was widely thought to be good for a medal in Sopot.
Let's hope she heals as fast as she runs, and will have a great record-breaking outdoor season.

Another withdrawal just announced is Dathan Ritzenhein from the Boston Marathon.

This makes three NOP athletes who have had injuries affect their racing ability in the past month or so.
First, Galen Rupp DNF'ed in the Millrose Mile, but did a workout later, so seems to be okay.
Then came Cain's and Ritz's announcements.

Why, all of a sudden, are THREE Nike Oregon Project athletes forced to change their race plans because of injury, however minor?
All of them coached by Alberto Salazar.

Apologies and answers, Alberto!
NOW!!!

The 3 major meets remaining on the Indoor schedule should produce major revisions in my T&F Record Book.
And they'll be coming from all 4 categories--World, US, Collegiate, and HS.

Speaking of my T&F Record Book, I've been doing some massive improvements on it. these past several weeks.

1. I've added the 600 and 1000 to my Indoor HS and Collegiate DDD's.
2. Also added are the 4X400 Relay to the World DDD, the 4X400 and DMR to the Collegiate DDD, and the same two to the United States DDD.
3. I've added to my OUTdoor DDD's also.  I've added the 4X100, 4X400, and DMR to my Collegiate and US DDD's.  And added the 4X100 and 4X400 to my World DDD's.
3. I've filled out, or added the Pentathlon and Heptathlon to my HS, Collegiate, US and World DDD's.
4. I've also returned the 2000 to the US and World DDD's.
5. Finally, as noted before, I've eliminated the strict standards I had in place for my Meet and National Records sections, both Indoor and Outdoor.  This makes both sections much larger than they were before.  For outdoors, I've added the Oxy High Performance and Portland Track Festival, as well as more complete records for the Doha and Shanghai DL's, and for the Ostrava and other "lesser" European meets!

But that's not all.
Since subscribing to T&FN's eTN (Track Newsletter) about 3 months ago, I've gone through every one of the more than 500 issues dating from January 2002 (when the print edition stopped publication, changing exclusively to an online edition) through early June of 2012.
I still have the rest of 2012, all of 2013, and 2014 to go through.

From their pages, I've discovered MANY marks that I'd somehow missed from all my other sources!!
So not only have I expanded my Record Book, but I've found many marks that change the status of many athletes on my various DDD lists!!
As I've gone along in this research, I've entered the missed marks into my book.
So the places I announce in my posts are as up-to-date as can be!

Finally, I'd like to direct you to a thread I started on the T&FN Message Board.
It's in the "Current Events" section.
It's actually an essay I wrote titled "The Four Seasons of Athletics".
It's long, and I had to extend it to 3 separate posts on that thread.
But, even if I do say so myself, it's worth reading.

Feel free to comment on the essay, or anything else in my 36 posts thus far!!
And please encourage anyone you know to follow this blog!
Anyone who loves marks and records in T&F should love this blog!!

WIC, here we come!!!

Was that the SEC meet...or the NCAA Championships?

As the results kept pouring in from the SEC meet, I began wondering if I were not seeing results from the NCAA meet instead.
I mean, I know the SEC is always one of the best Indoor meets, and veers on the edge of challenging some Invitationals for quality of marks (especially in the sprints, relays, and field events), but the 2014 version went above and beyond.
And it sucks that some athletes will pass on the WIC to compete for their teams in the NCAA's.  Difficult to compete at the highest levels 2 weeks in a row.
Anyway, before I get to the SEC, Sandra Perkovic made news in  Croatia today.

She threw the Discus 231-4, the furthest throw since the '90's (except for Pishchalnikova's 231-11 from 2012, which was erased because of a drug DQ).
It makes her 20th A-T in the World!
And this was apparently her first meet of the season!!
(It was Outdoors!  I mention this because ALL of my blogs have contained only Indoor marks thus far!)

The SEC.

Let's start with Kamaria Brown.
She ran her 200 prelim in 22.51.
I'll skip telling where that mark placed her, because she soon improved on it!!
Yes, she ran her final in 22.50.
THAT mark makes her 5th A-T Collegiate.
And 6th A-T US.
AND...17th All Time in the World!!
She also won the 400 in a blistering 50.94
That mark happens to place her 8th A-T on both the Collegiate and US Indoor lists!

Those events placed (or raised) some others on my lists.

Dezerea Bryant ran 22.75, moving her to 14th A-T Collegiate, and 15th A-T US.
Robin Reynolds took 2nd in the 400 with 51.77, making her 17th A-T Collegiate and US.
(Keep in mind that Collegiate lists include some foreigners!)
Shamier Little, known as a 400H runner, ran 51.86, putting her at 21st A-T Collegiate and 22nd A-T US.

The Men's 400 was a blazer too.
Deon Lendore won in 45.03, a PR which moves him from 5th up to 4th A-T Collegiate, but tied with 1 other.
Arman Hall ran 45.28, which ties him with 1 other at 7th A-T Collegian.  He moved up from 20th!!
Vernon Norwood ran 45.39.
He's 12th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other.
He's also 14th A-T US, tied with 2 others.
And he's on the World list too, in 22nd, tied with 4 others!

I hesitate to give places for the Multi's, as I'm still working on compiling those lists for Indoors.
That said, Maicel Uibo's 5859 Hept score is good for 20th place A-T Collegiate Indoor, tied with 1 other.
Erica Bougard's PR Pentathlon score of 4458 gives her 5th A-T Collegiate.
(Frosh Kendell Williams missed her PR of 4302 by just 19 points!)

The Women's 800, both prelim and final, provided 2 marks of note.
Megan Malasarte won the prelim in 2:03.08, making her 13th A-T Collegiate.
But Stephanie Brown won the final (Malasarte was 3rd!) in 2:03.21, which gives her 16th A-T Collegian, tied with 1 other.

Kendra Harrison won the 60H in 7.94, which moves her from 11th A-T Collegiate up to 6th, tied with 3 others.

Denise Hinton had a good WT measuring 73-11, which makes her 11th A-T Collegian, but also 14th A-T US (Actually not certain she's US, so will let you know if I find out she's not!), and 16th A-T World!

Kearsten Peoples threw the SP 58-5.25, which makes her 15th A-T Collegiate.

A couple of female PV'ers got good heights, but at different meets.
Alysha Newman's 14-3.25 ties her at 24th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others.
At the ACC meet, Megan Clark reached 14-5.25, tying her at 16th A-T Collegiate, with 1 other.

Finally, shades of USATF's nightmare DQ circus, Florida won the 4X400 Relay in 3:30.16, making them School # 7 on the A-T Collegiate list.
However, the "other winner", Texas A&M, was DQ'ed for an interference call.
Protests and appeals are being filed, I believe.
News about the incident is still coming in as I write.

The Men's 4X400 was sensational!
Texas A&M won in a Collegiate Record time of 3:03.20.
Florida was 2nd in a time of 3:03.50, which would've tied the old CR of.....Texas A&M!!
Florida did beat their old best by 0.01.
They are now 1st and 2nd on the A-T Collegiate list!

I'll close with some good HS marks.

Tessa Barrett ran a PR in the 3000, her 9:36.45 making her 11th A-T HS Indoors.
(Remember, no OT marks, so Alexa Efraimson's 9:00.16 from Seattle is NOT on my list!!)

Brianna Schwartz collapsed after crossing the finish line, but she ran a solid mile in 4:42.58, good for 8th A-T HS.
She's in the 11th grade!!

Two boys ran solid 800's.
Kyle Francis won in 1:50.55, tying him with the iconic Michael Granville for 4th A-T HS.
Jeff Wiseman ran 1:51.36 in 2nd, tying him with 1 other at 10th A-T HS.

Finally, Corey Crawford, a junior at Purdue, LJ'ed 26-11.75.
That was his THIRD PR of the day!!
Suddenly, he's tied at 11th A-T Collegiate (with 1 other), and is now 21st A-T US, tied with 2 others!!

In the next few days (prior to the World Indoor Championships in Sopot), I hope to have at least 1, and maybe 2 (or 3??) more posts.
I'll add whatever other marks I missed in my "rush to publish".
I'll also make some predictions for the upcoming biggies, the WIC, the NCAA, and the NBIN.
I may even begin reviewing the entire 2014 Indoor season!
We'll see!
