And who best to "juggle" these numbers than Ms Juggler Queen Herself---Ms Sydney McLaughlin??!!
Tell me, am I the only person who believes McLaughlin might be the GREATEST-EVER Female Track & Field athlete---at least, in the making??
She's 18 years old--turns 19 on August 7th--and yet she has the breadth and width and depth of inherent talent that turns heads like a passing President or movie star might!
If I had the guts--and sometimes I do!--I'd predict right now that she can break the WORLD Records in the 300, 400, 600, 800, 100H, 400H, the LJ, and maybe even the Heptathlon and/or the Decathlon!!
And do so by wide margins!!
She makes you believe!
Because SHE believes!!
I was once enamored of the budding talents of Mary Cain, declaring she'd run X times in X events before her 20th birthday!
Didn't come to pass!
Well, those feelings are even stronger here!
Because we have an athlete who keeps on keeping on--who began as a HS Frosh, and now, as a College Frosh at Kentucky--keeps getting better, and better, and...well, just blasts through every barrier of negativity and doubt so called "experts" throw her way!
Enough!
Let the FACTS speak for themselves!!
For these past 3 weeks (See my previous post!), it began for her at Arkansas's National Relays meet, held the same weekend as Drake and Penn!
There, she ran 2 events, and in both, she was sensational!!
Her final nailed her year old PR of 53.82 (the USATF race last year) by 0.22, her 53.60 breaking the Frosh Class Record by 1.25 seconds!!
(That by itself is one amazing FACT!!)
She also broke the Age 18 Record!
It made her 4th A-T Collegiate, but she remained 15th A-T US!
On my US Combined Events list for the 400 & 400H, her times of 50.07 and 53.60 added to 1:43.67.
She remained 5th on that list.
She also ran 3rd leg on Kentucky's 4X400 Relay!
Their time was 3:27.07, while her leg took just 49.47 of it!!
Now let's go to Collegiate Conference Central---aka the SEC---to see what The Juggler did next!!
Oh boy!!
Oh man!!
Ohhhhhh, Baby!!!!!
Turning her magnificent wheels like a runaway semi going down a steep hill, McLaughlin merely took Kori Carter's once-special Collegiate Record of 53.21--and turned it into mincemeat!!
Her 52.75 took 0.46 seconds off Carter's Record--and Kori Monster was no slouch!!
It also removed a giant chunk of time--0.85 seconds--off her own PR set just days earlier (See above!)!!
(She'd run her heat in a quick 54.85!)
Besides the CR, she also smashed her own Frosh Class and Age 18 Records!
It obviously gave her the Meet Record too!
And this time also moved her up on my Combined Events lists--both of them!
On the US list (her 50.07 and 52.75 adds to 1:42.82), she moved from 5th to 1st!!
Yes, she is now Number ONE on that list!!
On the World list, her total time makes her 4th!!
She moves from 4th A-T Collegiate to the Top!
From 15th A-T US to 5th, tied with 1 other!
AND she becomes 9th A-T on the World list, tied with 1 other!
To finish off this paean, her entry on that latter DDD cuts OFF one Debbie Flintoff, whose 53.17 dated from 1988!!
But she wasn't done!
In the 4X400, there was a botched hand-off--apparently between Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Syd!
Haven't seen the video, but apparently McLaughlin had to stop in order to get the baton in her hand, then re-start her engine!
This cost her a few tenths, according to several sources!
Her split of 49.83--some say--might have been 49.00 if she'd gotten her normal start!!
BTW, Kentucky's 3:25.99 won the race, setting the Meet Record!
It also moved them from 10th A-T School to 7th!
Five other teams broke 3:30--Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Alabama!
While we're on Relays--and the SEC--it's a good time to report on LSU's new Collegiate Record in the 4X100!!
Their 42.05 took care of their own (and Oregon's) 42.12's from last year!!
Running with Aleia Hobbs on anchor, it gave them the CR, and broke their own Meet Record!!
They moved from 1st A-T School, tied with UO, to 1st, but losing the Ducks!!
Kentucky (with JCQ, but not McL!) was 2nd in 42.30!
They moved from 4th A-T School to 3rd!
Arkansas was 3rd, their 43.26 moving them from 16th A-T School to 15th!
Then followed Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee, all within 0.04 seconds of each other!!
LSU had also won a meet on their home turf in 42.49!
USC took both of the Sprint Relays at the PAC-12, winning in 42.85 and 3:30.45!
Houston won the Penn Relays 4X400 in 3:01.82.
This made them 19th A-T School!
A VERY close finish for the Men's 4X400 at the SEC's, with both LSU and Arkansas ending in 38.76, with Florida 3rd in 38.95!
Texas A&M took the 4X400 in 3:01.17, with LSU and Florida several tenths behind!
Purdue's Women had a pair of good Relays at Drake!
Their 4X400 took just 3:28.42, which was an 0.10 second PR!
They remain 17th A-T School!
Their 4X200 team, with 2 different runners, ran 1:32.24.
The 4X400 team's 3:28.98 gave them the Big 10 Meet Record!
The 400's produced several speedy races!
Steven Gardiner was maybe the highlight, as his Doha W in 43.87 broke his own National Record of the Bahamas!
It also gave him the Meet Record, and moved him from 13th A-T World to 12th, tied with 1 other!
On my World C-E list for the 100, 200, and 400, he is now 6th A-T!
Let me explain something!
On that particular C-E, I give a slow time of 10.50 to an athlete (Men only!) who has never run a timed 100! I figure that's fair!
So Gardiner's 1:14.12 total time is gotten from a 10.50, 19.75, and the 43.87!
Abdelelah Haroun was 2nd in 44.50!
Adding 10 hurdles to the mix, Doha also gave us a quick time in the 400H!
By someone I'd never heard of!!
Abderahmane Samba of Qatar ran 47.57, giving him the Meet Record, his National Record, and made him 18th A-T World!!
The 2nd DL--Shanghai--found Gardiner winning again, this time in 43.99.
It also set a Meet Record!
Isaac Makwala took Silver in 44.23, while TJ'er supreme Christian Taylor was 5th with a 45.24!!
The SEC meet had a great Men's 400!
Nathon Allen's 44.28 edged Nathan Strother's 44.34!
Allen moves from 13th A-T Collegiate to 6th!
And he gets the Soph Class Record!
Strother's time makes him 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
He'd run a 45.01 (and a 200 in 20.76) at Arkansas's National Relays meet!
Michael Norman also ran a quick 400---at the PAC-12 meet!
His 44.40 moves him from 15th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others, to 12th!
He ran 44.74 in winning the USC-UCLA dual meet!
He also ran a windy 19.84 at the former meet!
Kendall Ellis ran the College Crowd's fastest 400 of 2018---Syd the Kid notwithstanding---her 49.99 giving her the PAC-12 Meet Record!
It moves her from 11th A-T Collegiate to 2nd!
And on the US list, it moves her from 22nd to 21st, tied with 1 other!
Oregon's Makenzie Dunmore took the Silver in 50.63.
This makes her 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Sharika Barnett's 50.69 makes her 23rd A-T Collegiate!
Rai Benjamin's 48.46 nabbed the 400H at the SEC's!
Running a legal 19.83 (1.3) was Noah Lyles, setting the Doha Meet Record!
He moves from 22nd A-T US to 12th, tied with 1 other!
He misses the World list by just 0.01 seconds!
Jereem Richards took 2nd in 19.99!
The SEC, as always, had some speedy stuff going down in the 100 and 200!
Aleia Hobbs took the 100 in 10.92, getting the Meet Record!
Wind was 1.5, but she sped her heat in 10.93 with a negative breeze of 0.4!
Shania Collins took 2nd in 10.99, making her 11th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!!
Tamara Clark was a quick 3rd, time of 11.02!
This makes her 17th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!!
Kendal Williams's 9.99 (1.1) makes him 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
He also won the 200 in 20.15, and took his 100 heat in 10.08!
At the National Relays meet, Collins ran 11.10 and 22.57 in the 100 & 200, with JCQ 2nd in the 200 in 22.69!
But it was Lynna Irby's 22.25 that opened my eyes a bit wider!
Knew she was fast, but not THAT fast!!
This makes her 10th A-T Collegiate!
And she misses the US list by just 0.04 seconds!!
The short hurdles events got some real action!!
JCQ---aka Jasmine Camacho-Quinn---ran 12.40 at the SEC!
Using a mild 1.2 wind, she broke her own National Record of Puerto Rico, and got the Meet Record.
She moves from 5th A-T Collegiate to 2nd, a mere 0.01 behind Brianna Rollins (McNeal's) 12.39 CR!
She's also now 16th A-T World!!
Alexis Duncan was 2nd in 12.79!
JCQ's heat was in 12.58, with a 1.6 breeze.
Speaking of Rollins-McNeal, she won the Shanghai DL in a Meet Record time of 12.50, with Sharika Nelvis 2nd in 12.52, and Kendra Harrison 3rd in 12.56!
But Harrison's 12.53 (0.5) had taken the Doha affair from Rollins-McNeal's 12.58.
Dawn Harper-Nelson---this being her farewell year--was 8th in 13.21!
Harrison used a 2.5 wind to push her to a still-nice 12.37 time!!
Alysha Johnson won a Tucson meet in 12.75, with a minus 0.3 wind!
She misses the Collegiate list by 0.01 seconds!
Devynne Charleton's 12.76 took her heat at the Big 10, wind of 0.9!
She won the final in 13.07!
The Big 12 saw Rochelle Burton speed a 12.65, with a measly 0.2 at her back!
This equalled her PR, so she remains 11th A-T Collegiate!
Pedrya Seymour was 2nd in 12.72.
This makes her 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!
Cut OFF my Collegiate DDD was Dior Hall's 12.74, dating from 2015!
Chanel Brissett's 12.75 at the PAC-12 gave her the Age 18 Record!!
Grant Holloway inched up his 110H PR!
His 13.15 (0.9) at the SEC got him the Meet Record!
He moves from 2nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 2nd, but with no ties!
A surprise (Shock??) in 2nd was Daniel Roberts, another one of those I confess not having heard of before!!
But his 13.27 made him 10th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!!
Cory Poole, best known as a 400H guy, was 4th in 13.68!!
Well, I guess it's about time I began gathering all my "other" results in the Sprints and move to my more condense version!!
But I guarantee there's LOTS of great stuff to come!!
For example, Ashley Henderson ran the 100 in 10.98 with an 0.3 breeze!
This moves her from 14th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 9th, tied with 1 other!
Shakima Wimbley's 22.34 (1.7) took a meet in Clermont!
There was a deep field finish in the Doha Women's 100!
With a wind of 1.5, Marie Josee Ta Lou won in 10.85, leaving her 0.03 seconds from the World DDD list!
Blessing Okagbare's 10.90 was 2nd, while Elaine Thompson (10.93), Murielle Ahoure (10.96), Carina Horn (10.98), and Dafne Schippers (11.03) followed!
Horn's time broke her own National Record of South Africa!
Some REALLY quick times came from the Florida State HS meet!!
Best, for sure, was Frosh Tamari Davis's 200 of 22.48!!
Yes, that 2nd number is a 2, not a 3!!
She SHATTERED the Frosh Class Record by a whopping 0.58 seconds!!
And eTN lists it as the Age 15 Record!!
It makes her 3rd A-T HS!!
As a FROSH!!
She also took 2nd in the 100 in 11.36, wind against her of 0.9!!
Anthony Schwartz also clicked along---doubling in 10.07 and 22.41--albeit with respective breezes of 2.5 and 2.8!
He also ran as part of his American Heritage HS's 4X100 Relay time of 40.14!!
In another meet, Schwartz ran 10.13 (2.0), moving him from 6th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 4th, tied with 1 other!
He also had a windy 200 in 20.49!
The Shanghai meet had a quartet of good races!
Delilah Muhammed nipped Jeneive Russell in the 400H, 53.77 to 53.78!
Omar McLeod also had a close call, his 13.16 in the 110H beating Orlando Ortega's 13.17!
Great Britain's Reece Prescod sped the 100 in 10.04, just beating Bingtian Su's 10.05.
Justin Gatlin and Andre De Grasse ended just 7th and 8th in respective times of 10.20 and 10.25!
And SMU--Shaunae Miller-Uibo, had no problem winning over Dafne Schippers in the 200, 22.06 to 22.34, battling an 0.4 wind!
A Tucson meet saw the Ducks winning a 4X100 in 42.70, while Duck Frosh Lauren Rain Williams won the 200 in 22.51.
The Arkansas meet saw Arkansas taking the 4X100 in 38.59, while Florida won the 4 lap Relay in 3:02.59!
Kentucky's Women took that 4X100 in 42.84, beating Tennessee's 43.59!
The Vols missed my Collegiate list by 0.01 seconds!!
The Penn Relays saw a pair of USA Red teams win Relays!
The Men took the 4X100 in 38.39, and the 4X400 in 3:01.31!
The shorter race had Justin Gatlin on 2nd leg!
The Women's 4X400 was taken by USA Red's 3:26.73!
Gatlin ran the Grenada 100 in 10.05 (0.5)!
Southern Miss took the Conference USA meet's 4X100 in 38.89, making them 22nd A-T School!
LaShawn Merritt and Tori Bowie took the 200's in 20.57 and 22.75!
Kori Carter won the 100H in 12.79 with a 1.1 wind.
The Texas HS meet had some solid marks!
A HSR was broken in the Men's 4X200 Relay, with The Woodlands 1:23.25 taking the honors!
Kesean Carter was the anchor!
He'd won the 100 in 10.22, making him 19th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Seven Lakes was 2nd in the Relay, their 1:23.42 making them 3rd on that list!
The latter school also won the 4X100, their 39.80 missing the HSR by just 0.04 seconds!
The Woodlands took 2nd in 39:98!
Seventh was 40.37!!
Another rather obscure and unheralded Relay Record fell!
And this time it was a WORLD & US Record!!
In an 800 Medley (100, 100, 200, 400), the USA Red team (at Penn) ran 1:35.20, getting both of those major Records!
Raevyn Rogers ran the anchor leg in 50.48!
Imagine Rogers repeating her 49.77 leg from a year or so back!
We'd have a time in the mid-1:34's!!
Speaking of speedy Relay legs, how about Gabby Thomas's alarming 49.44 on Harvard's 4X400 winner at the Heps!!
That's just the fastest Collegiate Relay leg known so far!!
Harvard's time was 3:36.44!
She also won the 100 and 200 in 11.27 and 22.76, and ran a leg on her School's 4X100 for good measure!
Probably didn't even break a sweat!!
Marlon Humphrey had a busy day at his Alabama State meet!
His HS-leading 36.00 over 300H led the way, but he also did the 110H in 14.00 and a flat 400 in 47.43!
Tia Jones won a 100H race in 13.03, wind of 1.8!
The Guadeloupe meet saw Allyson Felix win the 100 in 11.30 with zero wind aid!
Shakima Wimbley won the 400 in 50.64!
Tyson Gay sped a 100 in 10.11 in Clermont, using a 1.9 wind!
Kaylin Whitney---Remember her??--won a 200 in 22.93 (1.5), one of her better times these past couple of years or so!
Blessing Okagbare won a 200 in 22.43, wind of 1.2.
Georgeanne Moline took a 400H in 54.86!
I know this is an extremely lengthy one already, but I need to add a somber note before I close!
Tyrese Cooper, one of the most promising and talented young athletes on the planet, was arrested on multiple charges at the end of April!
These include alleged auto theft and burglary!
Stories since then make this story even sadder!
Apparently, he was kicked out of the home where he was staying for reasons unknown, or at least not confirmed!
While he got an early release from jail so he could compete in the Florida State meet, he apparently was arrested again on further charges!
Until I know more, I hesitate to say anything else!
Cooper says he fell in with the wrong crowd, and seems remorseful!
I have no idea how this will play out, but these charges are serious, and at worst, could lead to some prison time!
He had turned 18 on March 21st, so if convicted, can be sentenced to an adult prison, not Juvenile detention!!
If he's guilty--or even if he's not--he needs to get his act together--on and off the track!
Find some decent people to hang with!
Go to college, or turn Pro, and set himself up in a good home!
On the track, he needs to cut back his racing schedule!
Doubling and tripling in EVERY meet not only will wear out his body, but won't allow him to run the SUPER fast times everyone believes he's capable of!!
Dude, get it together!
PLEASE!!
Be back soon with my 3rd post---covering the past 3 weeks of Throws action!!
Great post! I especially loved the lead story on Sydney. Everybody loves her and whether or not she is the future of track and field, she is a big star now and running fantastically with seemingly unlimited potential. I love hearing all the news about her -- including her juggling, which is super-cool.
ReplyDeleteI think you might like to know: It's Lynna Irby (not Lynn) and Tamari Davis (not Tamara). It's very rare for you to botch a name, so I'm thinking you need to get some sleep! (And I robbed you of too much time with our fun dialog this morning. Sorry!)
You are sleepy! It's Kendall Ellis (not Kendell).
ReplyDeleteAs for total dominance by Sydney -- well let's not "jump the gun". She has some real serious rivals: Kendall Ellis, Lynna Irby, Gabby Thomas -- all young and massively talented! It's going to be fun watching these young ladies over the next few years!
However, to Sydney's credit, these other talented ladies all specialize in flat racing. Sydney, no matter how fast she is on the flat, is and always has been a hurdler. I hope she continues to concentrate on the hurdles, especially the 400h, where she may already be the best in the world. It's her greatest strength. I wouldn't want to see her spread herself too thin running a lot of other events.
And it's no cakewalk for her in the hurdles either. Training mate Kori Monster is not going to lay down and play dead! She's the world champion and ranked #1 in the world last year. The rivalry between Sydney and Kori could be a major highlight of the sport over the next few years. And they're not alone. Don't forget Dalilah Muhammad who, at 52.64, is no slouch.
The w400H world record isn't going to last long. It should be gone this year. And Sydney, Kori, or Dalilah could all do it. Eventually I think it will belong to Sydney when all is said and done, and under 52 seconds, but for now it's wide open and it's going to be fun to see where these lovely ladies can take it!
Thanks for your proofreading work! I'll make those name spelling changes! (I've always--and still have--problems figuring out the spelling of all the "Kendell's" in our sport, both male and female!
DeleteBut you missed a super biggie---as did I.
McL's 53.82 didn't come in the OT's for Rio!
It came in the USATF meet last year--2017!
She ran 6th in that spectacular race, where everybody and their sister performed above and beyond!
Remember that she didn't go to London, wanting to start prepping for college instead!
Yes, she was in the OT's in '16, and made the team, but with a time in the 54's!!
Anyway, thanks for your praise, etc!
I napped a bit, but am now awake and will begin post number 3 soon!
I don't know anywhere near enough about T&FN stats to properly proofread your blog, but those name spelling errors just happened to jump out at me, so I mentioned them. You are normally very fastidious about both names and marks, so I thought you would want to know.
DeleteAnd while I didn't mention it, and therefore have to agree I "missed" it as you stated, I did get an internal "error message" when you mentioned that Sydney's previous PR in the 400h came in 2016. I had a feeling-recollection that she had definitely PRed in this event in 2017, but I didn't dwell on the thought long enough to puzzle out exactly what the error was. I don't read your blog looking for errors! I just happened to notice those name spellings that I did mention.
