The one US-based Invitational meet always revs the engines of athletes and fans!
Well, almost always!
This year's version of the Prefontaine Classic ran amiss of that quality Friday evening, and never fully recovered.
The NCAA's idea of the "Prelims" meet (Formerly called Regionals!) truly SUCKS!
(Even if there WERE a few performances worth noting!)
And Gotzis?
Please, Ashton, return, and bring with you the several Hyphenated Females!
That said, this weekend DID have several DL-level results, even if not all of them were in the Eugene Diamond League meet!
And it's my great honor to report those to you!
I'll begin, however, with a series of OLD marks that came in prior to Friday!
Andreas Hofmann became the 3rd German this year to hit 300 feet in the Javelin Throw!
Exactly that, in fact!
He moves from 14th A-T World to 12th!
In Estonia, Andrius Gudzius's 226-9 DT became the World Leader!
On May 20th, Lukas Weisheidinger's 226-4 DT became Austria's new National Record!
Emily Sloan, who emerged INdoors as a HS hurdles find, ran the 300H in 40.60, probably in the Top 15 A-T!
She also sped the 100H in 13.48.
In Colorado's State meet, Arria Minor ran a "major" (Heh.) time over 400 meters--51.92!
It moves her from 21st A-T HS to 15th!
In the rarely-run 800 Medley Relay (100, 100, 200, 400), Denver East's Women ran the HSR time of 1:42.63!
Minor, a student there, almost certainly ran the anchor leg!
Dana Baker improved her JT mark to 175-6, moving her from 12th A-T HS to 7th!
And Sam Walsh threw the Discus a HS-leading distance of 212-9, missing my HS list by 4 inches!
In Chula Vista (on May 20th), Katie Nageotte PV'ed 15-5.50, with 2nd going to Emily Grove's 15-1.50!
The Osaka Women's 100--where Yangli Wei won in 11.17--was windy (2.3)!
And in the same meet where Brittney Reese got her 23-7 wind-aided mark, Kendell Williams also produced a solid mark--22-8--but also wind-aided!!
I was going to lead in to the Pre meet by saying "fast forward", but that Two Mile race was anything BUT fast!!
At least if you believed all the talk about wanting the Meet Record of 8:03.50!!
The first lap was 61, but then a gap widened between the rabbits and the field!
You just don't run an 8:03--or even a sub-8:10!--off a 4:15 opener!
So it was that a race that COULD have drastically revised both the World and US A-T lists, instead gave up just 2 US marks that BARELY made my US DDD!!
Eighteen year old (Questionable age??) Selemon Barega sprinted hardest at the end to win in 8:20.01.
Paul Chelimo also ran his trademark finish, ending 2nd in 8:20.91.
He becomes US A-T 15th!
Berhanu Berlew was 3rd in 8:21.54.
Ryan Hill was the other American to make that list, his 8:22.36 in 6th making him 23rd A-T US!
Eric Jenkins's 8:23.50 didn't make the list ONLY because of the two Americans who made the list ahead of him!
He missed by 0.34 seconds!
Cut OFF my list were a pair of vaunted runners of yore--Jim Spivey's 8:24.14 dating from 1986, and Doug Padilla's 8:23.6 coming out of 1982!
The pair of PV's were good--even GREAT in some ways--but again could have been so much better!
What MADE the Men's event was Mondo Duplantis's 2nd place finish--his 18-8.75 behind only Sam Kendricks's 19-1.50 winner!
Piotr Lisek matched Mondo's height in 3rd, while Renaud Lavillenie had his problems, ending just 5th at 18-3! That's been his OPENING height quite often!
The Women's event lost Ekaterina Stefanidi early--after 15-1--which gave her just 7th!
Two of the 16 Girls--Sandi Morris and Katie Nageotte--could clear just 15-5, with Morris getting 3rd to Nageotte's 4th!
Then we come to the "Age Queens"--aka 36 year old Jenn Suhr, and 21 year old Eliza McCartney!
(A joke remark from Jenn on Twitter said she could be Eliza's mother!!)
Well, it was no joke when they became the only ones to clear 15-11, the mark for Eliza breaking her own National Record of New Zealand, and giving her the 3rd Age Record of her young career--Ages 19, 20, and 21!
It also moves her from 12th A-T World, tied with 3 others, up to 8th, tied with 1 other!
For Jenn, her 15-11 merely broke her own Age 36 Record, and gave her sole hold on the Pre Meet Record!
Noah Lyles used the max 2.0 wind to run the 200 in 19.69, winning by 0.36 seconds over Jereem Richards, with Aaron Brown's 20.07 another 0.02 back!
Lyles moves from 12th A-T US, tied with 1 other, to 7th!
And he's now 10th A-T World, tied with 1 other!
Shaunae Miller-Uibo had no problem dominating the Women's 400--her 49.52 blazer winning by almost 1.3 seconds!!
Genzebe Dibaba was another who had little to do to win the 5000!
Wanting a WR--and getting one--are two entirely different babies!
By lap 2, that idea was dead!
But her 14:26.89 winner was still a decent rust-buster for this Goddess of the Distances!
In 2nd came Getesenbet Gidey's PR of 14:30.29!
This makes her 18th A-T World!
Helen Obiri let a gap form a few times, but always closed most of it, thus producing a MUCH better result than in her Doha 3K--her 14:35.03 taking 3rd!
In 8th came Dominique Scott's PR of 15:10.23!
The Men's SP's quality field produced quality results, despite Joe Kovacs and Konrad Bukowiecki being sub-par!
Ryan Crouser's 5th round 73-11 broke his own Pre Meet Record!
All 5 of his fair throws reached 71-7.25 or longer!!
Michal Haratyk's 72-1 broke the National Record of Poland!!
But it's 2 inches short of making the Top 24 World list!!
Two and three-quarter inches off that World list was Darlan Romani's 72-0.25, which did break his own National Record of Brazil!!
In 4th was Tom Walsh, whose 71-8 becomes the new 4th Place Record!!
If only Kovacs and Bukowiecki, as well as David Storl and Darrell Hill, had hit 70 feet.....!!!
The SHOCKER of the meet---but not really!!--came when Shelby Houlihan raced from 9th to 1st over her 59.86 final 400--hitting the W line in 3:59.06!!
This moves her from 19th A-T US, tied with 1 other, all the way to 5th!!
And on my US Combined Events list for the 1500 & 5000, she's now 6th, her times of 3:59.06 and 15:00.37 adding to 18:59.43!
Also well back at the bell (7th) was Scotland's newest Doctor Veterinarian--Laura Muir--her 3:59.30 edging past Jenny Simpson's 3:59.37!
Simpson had been the leader with 1 to go!
In 4th was Rababe Arafi's 3:59.51.
Linden Hall's 4:00.86 in 6th is Australia's new National Record!
Brenda Martinez ran decently in 7th, her 4:02.65 a good start to a maybe better summer!
In the other events of note---
Marie Josee Ta Lou's 10.88 held off Murielle Ahoure's 10.90 for the win!
The wind of 1.9 couldn't bring Elaine Thompson any closer than 3rd, time of 10.98!
Dafne Schippers's 11.01 outran Tori Bowie's 11.03 for 4th!
Thomas Rohler won a wind-eroded JT with his Pre Meet Record effort of 294-10.
Johannes Vetter took 2nd at 293-1.
Christian Taylor's final round 58-2 took the TJ over Will Claye's 57-3.50!
That was wind-aided, but Claye's best legal jump was 57-2.75, still good for 2nd!
Ben Kigen took the 3000SC in a PR time of 8:09.07.
Consesius Kipruto and Evan Jager ended just thousandths of a second apart, both being given 8:11.71's!
In the windy (2.4) 100, Christian Coleman got a shock when Ronnie Baker sped past him over the last 15 meters, his 9.78 prevailing over CC's 9.84.
Great Britain's Reece Prescod ran 9.88 in 3rd!
Mutaz Barshim had no trouble taking the HJ at 7-8.75, before missing his 3 tries at 7-11.25!
Despite "CS" running a "MR" time of 1:55.92, the REAL WOMEN's winner was Ajee Wilson's 1:56.86!!
Habitam Alemu's 1:57.78 took 2nd over Charlene Lipsey's 1:58.35!
Raevyn Rogers was a good 4th in 1:59.36!
Emmanuel Korir was another who allowed the pace to crawl, but he won the 800 in 1:45.16 over Nijel Amos's 1:45.51.
This despite taking SIX steps on the infield due to a push by someone!!
Natoya Goule took the National 800 in 2:00.84!
And the redshirting Dani Jones--of Colorado--won the National 1500 in 4:07.74 over Alexa Efraimson's 4:08.70!
Jones's time would have made her 8th A-T Collegiate--if not for her redshirt status!
But NEXT year??!!
The National Mile saw Drew Hunter's 3:57.29 losing to Luke Mathews's 3:57.02.
Brodey Hasty ran 4:04.73, but finished last!!
Janieve Russell sprinted best (or leaned best!!) at the end of the 400H, winning in 54.06 over Delilah Muhammed's 54.09!
Omar McLeod won a wind-aided 110H (3.0) in 13.01 over RUSSIA's Sergey Shubenkov, who ran 13.08!
And in the vaunted Bowerman Mile, Tim Cheruiyot was the only runner to go sub-3:50, his 3:49.86 a winner over Sam Teferi's 3:51.26!
Teferi's reported age of 20 is disputed, even though it still didn't get him the Age 20 record!
Elijah Manangoi had to finish hard to outrun 17 year old (for real!!) Jakob Ingebrigtsen, whose "HS age" time of 3:52.28 was faster than either Alan Webb or Jim Ryun ran while HS'ers!
But the Age 17 record eluded him also!
Clay Murphy's 3:53.40 took 5th over Matthew Centrowitz's 3:53.61.
The Gotzis Multi's meet saw some classy performances over the 2 days of action--all on free livestream, albeit with "foreign language" commentary!!
Damian Warner was steady over both days, his 8795 adding 100 points to his own National Record of Canada!!
He moves from 20th A-T World up to 10th!!
Mr SMU--aka Maicel Uibo--produced another PR, his 8514 a good Silver!
Three others were over 8300--Pieter Braun at 8342, Kai Kazmirek with 8329, and Mathias Brugger with 8304!
Zach Ziemek's 8124 was Top American!
For the Women, it was all Nafissatou Thiam---that is, until a poor JT of just 47 meters made it a bit tighter at the end!
She'd HJ'ed a World-Leading 6-7 (2.01), and making that look easy!
However, she still won--with 6806 points!
Yorgelis Rodriguez broke her own National Record of Cuba with her 2nd place score of 6742 points!!
She also takes up the caboose position on my A-T World list!!
In 3rd came Erica Bougard, again producing a brilliant PR!
Her 6725 was helped by a 100H of 12.80, and an 800 in 2:08 and change!
She moves from 6th A-T US to 4th, but misses the World list by 17 points!!
Anouk Vetter's 6426 took 4th, while two other Americans performed well--Alison Reaser hitting 6144, and Alex Gochenour reaching 6111.
But dropped FROM my World list was the most venerable Heike Drechsler, her 6741 dating from 1994!
Perhaps she was better known as a Long Jumper and Sprinter!!
Those NCAA "prelims" DID give up some GREAT marks---but for the most part produced yawns and trips to the kitchen or bathroom for most observers--however many of THEM there were!!
This is a meet where who DOESN'T make the cut becomes more relevant than who does!!
To that end--the MIA's at the NCAA's will be---
From the East--Erin Finn, a DNS in the 10K, Bella Burda from the 5 & 10K, Stamatia Scarvelis from the SP, Kortnei Johnson, who got a FS in the 100, and Darius Carbin, who missed out in the HJ with a No Height!
From the West--Maggie Ewen fouled out of her CR event, the HT--Jerrell Mock from the 10K, Lauren Rain Williams from the 100, Ionannis Kyriazis from the JT, Kiana Phelps from the DT, Ben Saarel and Reed Brown from the 1500, as well as Katie Rainsberger from the Women's 1500, Teahna Daniels and Jada Berlark from the 200--the latter a DNF--and Brie Oakley and Fiona O'Keefe from the 5000!
But let's visit the goodies!!
Despite a bad stumble off of a hurdle, Syd McLaughlin easily made the cut with her 55.50 time--although her opening round took just 54.78!
Two Men dropped 100's under 10 seconds to make my Collegiate list!!
Andre Ewers used a wind of 1.9 to hit 9.98, making him 18th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others!
Jaylen Bacon's 9.97 (0.9) makes him 14th A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
Lynna Irby had a solid meet!
Her 400's were 50.77 in the opening round, and 50.44 in Round 2.
The latter makes her 12th A-T Collegiate!!
Removed FROM my Collegiate list was one Shaunae Miller-Uibo--her 50.70 dating from 5 years ago!
In a super windy (5.4!!!) 200, Shania Collins ran a still-tremendous time of 21.97--though probably worth 22.50 or so without that zephyr!!
Irby ran in a separate heat, but her 22.06 was affected by a wind of 2.4!
Karissa Schweizer took the 5000 and 10000, times of 15:19.65 and 32:14.36!!
The latter time WOULD have broken the NCAA Meet Record, but the IDIOTS who created this FARCE of a "meet" don't allow for marks produced here to be eligible for NCAA MR's!!
IDIOTS, I tell you!!
Anyway, 2nd in the 10K was Alice Wright's 32:19.03, while in 3rd and 4th came Charlotte Taylor's 32:20.25, and Sharon Lokedi's 32:21.55--all of which would also have broken Sylvia Mosqueda's 32:28.57 NCAA MR from 1988!!
Which I saw in person!!
Schweizer's 5K moves her from 17th A-T Collegiate to 13th!
Ednah Kurgat took 2nd in a well back 15:25.25, while Lokedi followed in 15:27.09, with Vanessa Fraser running 15:27.36, with Allie Ostrander right behind in 15:27.46!
Seven broke the 15:30 barrier!!
Will Schweizer and Company run as fast in June??
Several other quality marks, but this is getting rather lengthy, so let's gather them together in a bunch!!
Rai Benjamin sped the 400H in 47.98, giving him the Junior Class Record!!
He also breaks his own National Record of Antigua, and he moves from 10th to 4th on the A-T Collegiate list!
Sabrina Southerland ran yet another PR, winning the 800 in 2:00.72.
This makes her 12th A-T Collegiate!
A total unknown (to me!) in 2nd was Avi Tal Wilson-Perteete (!!!), her time of 2:01.14 making her 20th A-T Collegiate!!
That much-ballyhooed Frosh--Sammy Watson--took 3rd in 2:02.20!
Chopped OFF my Collegiate list were two former UO venerables--Claudette Groenendaal's 2:01.20 dating from 1985, and Leann Warren's 2:01.30 dating from 1981!
Both ladies can be seen extensively in the great documentary "We Grew Wings"--about UO Women's teams of 1985 and 2011.
Highly recommended!!
Brooke Andersen took the West HT with 233-9--in the event where Maggie Ewen XXX'd out (See above!)!!
Two great Frosh SP'ers battled for supremacy in the West--Tripp Piperi's PR of 66-11.50 prevailing over Jordan Geist's 66-6!
Shanae Lawrence led the DT with her 203-9.
Allie Ostrander led all the 3000SC'ers with her 9:40.20.
But running good times were (East--Paige Stoner, in 9:48.73, missing the Collegiate list by 2.43 seconds--and West--Val Constien's 9:47.97)!
The latter is a Junior at Colorado!
A Soph at Oklahoma State ran 4:11.57 to take the 1500--her name being Sinclaire Johnson!!
Dwight St Hilaire, U of Kentucky runner from Trinidad, ran a quick 400 of 44.55!
This makes him 18th A-T Collegiate!
Nathan Allen ended 2nd in 44.76, while Akeem Bloomfield finished 3rd in 44.90!
Michael Norman ran 44.67 in the West!
Tara Davis had a terrific meet, leading East & West in the LJ with her 21-0.25, and making it to Eugene in the 100H as well!
Aleia Hobbs ran two fast 100's--a 10.98 opener, wind of 1.8--then 10.90 (1.9) in Round 2!
Shania Collins ran 11.00 in 2nd, but in a separate race, wind of 1.2.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn's 12.60 took the 100H, wind of 0.7!
Gabby Thomas ran 10.99, but with a wind of 2.8!
She also ran the 200 in 22.42, wind of 0.5!
Pedrya Seymour's 12.80 in the 100H had an aiding wind of 1.5, while 2nd went to Chanel Brissett's 12.86, same race!
David Kendziera's 13.40 in the 110H's missed the Collegiate list by 0.04 seconds!
Elinor Purrier took the 1500 in 4:10.90, missing my Collegiate DDD by 0.46 seconds.
Second went to Danae Rivers's 4:11.75!
Keturah Orji "jogged" (LOL) to a TJ win of 46-1.50!
Janeah Stewart threw her Hammer out 224-3, making her 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Divine Oduduru (20.21 with an 0.6 wind) and Rodney Rowe (20.26 with a wind of 0.1) ran quick 200's!
Maggie Ewen kind of made up for her foul-out in the HT by easily claiming the SP with her 62-9.25!
Susan Aneno ran the 800 in 2:02.71.
She's a Junior at Connecticut!
Grant Fisher won over Andy Trouard in the 5000, times in the 13:47's!
Relays went to--
LSU's 42.42 over Kentucky's 42.49!
USC's 3:01.11 over Texas A&M's 3:01.23.
Oregon's 3:29.94--
and Purdue's new School Record of 3:26.91.
They move from 18th A-T School up to 11th!!
Still with me??
Great!!
Just 3 more items!!!
Pawel Fajdek threw the Hammer a World Leading 264-9!
Huihui Lyu's JT of 222-1 breaks her own National Record of China!
She moves from 12th A-T World to 10th, tied with 1 other!
And FINALLY, we have Sara Hall taking 3rd in the Ottawa Marathon (behind Gelete Burka's 2:22:17 winner!!) in a PR time of 2:26:20!!
She moves up the US list from 15th to 9th!!
Yermane Tsegay's 2:08:52 took the Men's race!
This was a LONG one, but I guarantee you, IF that damn Two Mile at Pre had lived up to its pre-meet hype, I would have spread all the above over TWO posts!!
Alas!
See you soon!

2018 Prefontaine Classic Preview
This is my Annual Preview of this prestigious meet, held in its 45th edition (though it went by a different name before Steve died).
Lots to cover, but here's a few guidelines---
Every event--not just DL events--will be covered!
I will list them in order of the schedule!
Special emphasis will be given the Two Mile, with lots of extras!
Included with each event will be the scheduled time (Pacific Time, and all times are p.m.), the Meet Record (with odds for its being broken), who is most likely to be Top 2 or 3 or so, with other names added!
I'll also list any important MIA's!
So let's roll this baby out!!
FRIDAY
6:37 Men's POLE VAULT (19-10.25)
Both PV's are STACKED!! (I'll be saying that a LOT!!)
You have Renaud Lavillenie, Sam Kendricks, Thiago Braz, Shawn Barber, and MONDO Duplantis!
Need anyone else?
Well, add Piotr Lisek, Pawel Wojcieckowski, Raphael Holzdeppe, and Changriu Xue!!
Yet despite this classiest of fields, the Meet Record is given just 40-60 odds of going down!
Hayward Field is only sometimes good for Vaulters, and big Vaults are rarely assured!
6:42 Men's JAVELIN THROW (286-7)
GONE!! OUTTA here!! DONE deal!!
I'm speaking, of course, about this pathetic MR!!
I mean, come on, with THREE 300 footers here, if that MR doesn't get speared (Sic!) in Round One, I'm finished as a seer!!
We have Thomas Rohler, Johannes Vetter, and Andreas Hofmann!!
All of Germany!!
But watch for India's Neeraj Chopra, and Jakub Vadlejch!
7:35 Women's National 800 (The "MR" is held by one of the trio of Un-named, all present in this meet---but in tomorrow's 800!)
That said, tonight's leaders should be among Natoya Goule, Cecilia Barowski, and Kaela Edwards!
What kind of shape is Laura Roesler in?
Watch for Stephanie Brown!
7:42 Women's National 1500 (3:56.41)
This is a good All-American field!
While the MR won't fall (zero odds!), it might be a good race between Katie Mackey, Alexa Efraimson, Rachel Schneider, and Stephanie Garcia!
But watch for Sara Vaughn and Shannon Osika!
7:52 Men's 800 (1:43.63)
Will Emmanuel Korir--who says he'll eventually go sub-1:40!--go out sub-50?
If he does, a 1:42--or even high-1:41 is possible!
He has the speed!
Adam Kszczot, Nijel Amos, and Kipyegon Bett might get in his way!
Erik Sowinski is a great 600 man, but beyond that point, he's average!
Watch for recent British find, Kyle Langford!!
8:06 Men's TWO MILE (8:03.50---Enroute 3000 times WILL be taken--that MR is 7:35.44!)
THIS, friends, is a dream come true!!
Wish they'd done the same for the Women!!)
This may be the greatest Men's Deuce field in history!!
Or at least it has the POTENTIAL to be!!
Instead of the usual Preview, I'm giving you the Place Records for 2nd through 10th, Age Records for all Ages represented here tonight, as well as other essentials!
Place Records are---(2nd) 8:04.83, (3rd) 8:07.07, (4th), 8:11.74, (5th) 8:15.83, (6th) 8:16.50, (7th) 8:17.91, (8th) 8:18.72, (9th) 8:19.11, (10th) 8:21.65!
IF this becomes a speedfest--and all indications are it WILL be!!--then all 9 Place records could fall!!
The following are the relevant Age Records---(18) 8:13.47, (20) 8:03.54, (24) 8:01.08, (25) 8:07.07, (26) 8:01.72, (27) 8:11.16, (28) 8:14.05, (29) 8:15.18, (32) 8:15.90, (33) 8:12.45!
All of those Age Records, EXCEPT the 8:01's, could go!!
(See below for the names!)
Also, 24th A-T US is only 8:24.14!
And NONE of the six US entrants are currently on my list!!
24th on the World list is 8:13.47!
ALL entrants--including all of the Americans!--are capable of making the list!!
NONE are currently on that list!!
Saloman Barega is 18!
Richard Yator is 20!
Age 24 includes Muktar Edris and Ed Cheserek!!
Age 25 is Albert Rop!
Age 26 finds Eric Jenkins!
Age 27 includes Paul Tanui, Henrik Ingebrigtsen, Mo Ahmed, and Paul Chelimo!
Age 28 has Hassan Mead and Ryan Hill!
Age 29 has Shadrack Kipchirchir.
Age 32 finds Ben True, while Age 33 belongs to Lopez Lomong!
The King MIGHT WIN this thing!!
He'll surely have the locals cheering loudly!!
But Edris--despite his non-W's recently--is still dangerous!
Watch for Chelimo, Barega, Rop, Tanui, and Ingebrigtsen!
Aw Hell, flip a coin!!
SATURDAY
12:40 Women's POLE VAULT (15-5.75)
The only thing preventing that MR from going would be the weather!
And good weather is predicted!
As with the Men's event (See above!), this baby is STACKED!!
Jenn Suhr, Ekaterina Stefanidi, Sandi Morris, and Katie Nageotte--all 16 footers, are present!
But you can NOT ignore Eliza McCartney, Anzhelika Sidorova, Alysha Newman, Holly Bradshaw, or even Robelys Peinado!!
There are NO really weak links here--as with the Men!
On recent form, go with Suhr, Morris, and Stefanidi.
But McCartney had a NON-legal 16 footer in Australia earlier, so she might be ready to join the Club!
12:43 Men's TRIPLE JUMP (59-5)
Despite all hopes & wishes, I think that MR is safe for another year!
Give it 30-70 odds!
The only real MIA is PPPP, or Pablo Pichardo!
Christian Taylor and his partner in crime, Will Claye, are here, as is China's Bin Dong!
But watch for Almir Dos Santos, Alex Copello, and Max Hess!
Chris Benard and Nelson Evora are also here!
12:48 Men's International MILE (3:47.32--also, the 1500 MR is 3:32.72)
Brody Hasty will be the one to watch--although not for the Win!!
Will he FINALLY get that sub-4 he chased INdoors this year??
He ran a 4:07 a few days ago!!
But the Gold should go to Drew Hunter, who nabbed his 1st Gold recently!
Watch too for Pat Casey, Colby Alexander, and Riley Masters.
1:00 Men's HIGH JUMP (7-10.75)
Mutaz Barshim cleared 2.40 earlier, while missing his trio at 2.42.
The MR falls between those two--at 2.41.
Give him--and him alone!!--60-40 odds of getting at least a tie!
Andriy Protsenko's also here, as are Danil Lysenko, Erik Kynard, and Donald Thomas.
1:03 Women's 400H (53.03)
The person who would be almost guaranteed a new Meet Record ain't here!!
She (Syd the Kid) has "other" obligations!
In her absence, we should expect Shamir Little and Delilah Muhammed to dominate--although the former tends to falter in too many of her big races!
Watch for Georgeann Moline, Zuzana Hejnova, Cassandra Tate, Ashley Spencer, and Janieve Russell, who could surprise!
1:10 Women's 800 (For the so called MR, see earlier event!)
Besides "those 3", we have Ajee Wilson and Charlene Lipsey.
Oh shoot, do I really need to add other names?
Okay, add Raevyn Rogers, Eunice Sum, Habitam Alemu, and Christiane Williams!
Watch for a FAST opening lap!!
1:18 Men's 100 (9.80)
Christian Coleman had been entered in this race and the 200--but he decided to do just the Century!
Why?
To run a 9.6 or low-9.70??
(Give the MR 60-40 odds--and PRAY for legal winds!)
BEHIND Coleman, watch for Bingtian Su, Ronnie Baker, Isaiah Young, Ben Meite, and GB's Reece Prescod.
Justin Gatlin withdrew due to injury--a tight hamstring!
1:26 Men's 3000SC (8:01.71)
It would be so righteous if Evan Jager got his initial sub-8 on US soil!
But as with other DL's, fast time attempts normally end after the first 1000!!
So watch for a possible opening K of 2:36 to 2:38, but then keep a close eye on the clock after that!
With Consesius Kipruto in the field, that fast opener is almost guaranteed!
Is Jairus Birech in top shape?
Nicholas Bett, Amos Kirui, Ben Kigen, PK Koech, and the USA's Andy Bayer are others to watch!
I'll give the MR 60-40 odds!
1:41 Women's 100 (10.70)
NO Meet Record here--ZERO odds!
But it's a whale of a field, folks!!
There's ET (aka Elaine Thompson), Tori Bowie, Blessing Okagbare, Muriel Ahoure, and Marie Josee Ta Lou!
I hesitate--and am somewhat saddened!--to give Ms Dafne Schippers only a 2nd tier rating!
But she's recently been nowhere near her best form!
Yet watch for her, as well as possible shockers Dina Asher-Smith and Javianne Oliver!
1:50 Women's 1500 (3:56.41)
MIA in this event (She's in the 5000 later today--See below!) is WR holder Genzebe Dibaba!
But who needs HER when you have Laura Muir, Dawit Seyaum, and Jenny Simpson present??!!
(How well does Jenny's 9:16 Deuce at Drake translate here?)
Watch for Brenda Martinez, Colleen Quigley, Kate Grace, and Beatrice Chepkoech!
Also tagging along will be Winnie Chebet and Lisa Weightman!
The MR gets "just" 40-60 odds!
1:58 Men's SHOT PUT (73-7.25)
The "Big 4" are present, but not so sure Konrad Bukowiecki should be included in that Super Elite quartet!
The other 3 are, of course, Joe Kovacs, Tom Walsh, and Ryan Crouser--any of whom could explode out past 74 feet!!
Could be a dandy little battle!!
Darrell Hill, Darlan Romani, Michel Haratyk, Stipe Zunic, and David Storl are the rest!
But don't blink when those Europeans are throwing!!
2:03 Men's 110H (12.90)
No MR, folks!
At best, maybe 5-95 odds!
The wheels just ain't turning in this historic event!
Even WITH Omar McLeod and Orlando Ortega in the fast lanes!
(Sure wish MIA Grant Holloway was here!!)
If some of the above named hurdles crash, watch for local hero Devon Allen to surprise, as well as Aries Merritt, Sergey Shubenkov, Andy Pozzi, Aleec Harris, and Ron Levy!
2:10 Women's 5000 (14:19.76)
Will she--aka G-D, so to speak!--make yet another WR attempt??
She HAS the wheels, but I'm not sure if they're of 2018 vintage!
(For the WR, see if they pass 3000 in 8:30 or close to it!!)
Helen Obiri's here too, and you can forget her abysmal showing in Doha's 3K!!)
Alice Nawowuna (or Aprot) is here too, but MIA, among others, is Konstanze Klosterhalfen!
Choose from among Margaret Kipkemoi, Lilian Rengerek, Letesenbet Gidey, and Meref Bahta to play Follow the Leader.
Lauren Paquette might be ready for a big PR drop--to 15:00??
2:31 Women's 400 (49.34)
Allyson Felix scratched--for no known reason!
(Although cynics said she knew she wasn't in shape to place better than 4th or 5th, and didn't want that!!)
SMU--aka Shaunae Miller-Uibo should be a decisive winner!
There's a good to great field of Americans here, as this is again becoming a VERY strong event for the USA crowd!
Shakima Wimbley, Courtney Okolo, Jessica Beard, Phyllis Francis, and Jaide Stepter are to be watched closely!
Add Stephanie McPherson for good measure!
Also MIA are Sydney McLaughlin, Kendall Ellis, and Salwa Naser, 2017's huge surprise, who scratched!
Give SMU 40-60 odds for getting the MR!
2:45 Men's 200 (19.68)
As noted above, Christian Coleman decided to do just the 100!
But Noah Lyles is here, and apparently ready, as he's talked of a possible 19.6 or 19.7!!
But windy???
Watch for Isaac Makwala, Jereem Richards, and Nathaneel Mitchell-Blake to follow Lyles to the line. Add Ameer Webb, Anaso Jobodwana, and Ramil Guliyev to your watch list!
Finally, the---
2:52 Men's BOWERMAN MILE (3:47.32 and 3:32.72)
Asbel Kiprop isn't here!
Is he still embroiled in that alleged positive drug test I reported in an earlier post??
Elijah Manangoi, Tim Cheruiyot, and Silas Kiplagat are here, but have no idea what kind of shape they're in!
Matthew Centrowitz is present also, but he may not be ready to hold a sub-3:50 pace!
Watch too for Aman Wote, Vince Kibet, Bethwell Bergen, Samuel Teferi, as well as Americans Johnny Gregorek, Ben Blankenship, and Clay Murphy!
Keep your eye on super youngster Jakob Ingebrigtsen!!!
No MR!
Sorry, but no!
Finished JUST in time to post before the first event!
WHEW!!
Enjoy the meet!!
See you soon!!

Oh shoot, do I really need to add other names?
Okay, add Raevyn Rogers, Eunice Sum, Habitam Alemu, and Christiane Williams!
Watch for a FAST opening lap!!

Sunday, May 20, 2018
A Quiet Weekend?
Not quite!
Though definitely less noisy than the 3 weeks during when my computer was taking a siesta!
Maybe quieter in the quantity of Records & Marks, but not so much in the quality!
But before I begin, I need to make an addition to my Jumps post!
Remember Pablo etc etc Pichardo's 58-10.75 TJ at Doha??
Well, I didn't know--or had forgotten--that he's representing a new country after leaving Cuba!
He's in Portugal now!
Thus his mark gave him its National Record!!
(He joins former Cuban Orlando Ortega in that regard--as Ortega holds both the Cuba and Spain NR's for the 110H!!)
I'm going to lead with a HS mark!
Not because it's the best mark of the weekend!
Nor even that it's the best HS mark of the year!
But it represents a campaign that I've been ranting about for a few years now--the lost opportunities on the Women's side to break Polly Plumer's 1982 HSR in the Mile!
Think of how many HS Girls who COULD have taken that venerable Record down these past few years!
Mary Cain, Alexa Efraimson, Elise Cranny, Kate Murphy, Christina Aragon, Katie Rainsberger, Ella Donaghu!
And this year, we have possibles in Katelyn Tuohy, Katelynn Hart, and now Caitlin Collier!
(How many different ways to spell the same-sounding name!!!)
First, let me report that she PR'ed in the 800 during my absence!
In the Florida State meet on May 4th, she ran the 800 in 2:02.77
She moved from 15th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 9th!
Well, now she's PR'ed in the Mile!
At the adidas Boston meet, she ran 4:38.48 to take the HS Mile from London Culbreath's 4:43.41.
It all came in the final 400!
Only slightly ahead at the bell, Collier sped a 65.91 final lap, as opposed to Culbreath's 70.17!
Think about that!
She has 2:02.77 800 speed!
(Faster later??)
And now she just kicked with a 65.91 in a Mile where her average 440's were 69.6's!
She can nail Plumer's HSR!
As can Tuohy, and probably Hart!!
But WILL they take that serious shot--or will 2018 be another year of lost opportunities??
The women's Hammer Throw in the US continues to--uh--hammer away!!
And DeAnna Price is now the main player!
In a meet in Jamaica, she added a foot to her PR, her 250-2 the best of a 4-throw series where all her throws were in the high 240's!!
While she remains 2nd to Gwen Berry on the US list, she moves from 22nd A-T World to 18th!!
Sean Donnelly got a significant PR in the Hammer also!
His 252-6 in the Tucson Elite meet makes him suddenly 9th A-T US!
He had not been among my Top 24 before!
That Boston meet was a 2-day event.
The first day was on the stadium track, and covered mainly distances.
The second day (today!) was on a track laid down on Charles Street, and was completely straight!
And that allowed Shaunae Miller-Uibo to break a World Record!
(Though I assume they're talking of WR's set on portable tracks on city streets, NOT regulation tracks inside stadia!)
Anyway, her time of 16.23 (over 150 meters) is at least faster than any other Woman has run on such a device, and in such a venue!
Michelle Lee-Ahye was 2nd in 16.57.
Hannah Cunliffe came in 4th with 16.95!
The Men were speedy over the same distance!
Noah Lyles won in 14.77, beating Nathaneel Mitchell-Blake's 14.81.
He had to finish strong to nail NMB!
Steven Gardiner continued his strong season with a 19.88 in the straight 200!
Alonzo Edward and Jereem Richards had the same time--20.03--but finished 2nd & 3rd, respectively!
A surprise in the Women's 200 found Anastasia Le-Roy--a journeywoman Jamaican Age 30--winning in 22.16!!
Joanna Atkins was 2nd in 22.31, with Shakima Wimbley following in 22.43!
They held a 200H race too--also on the straight!
And that produced an "AR", with Ebony Morrison surprising Shamier Little, 25.80 to 25.90!
(What could Sydney McLaughlin run on that kind of track??)
Other 2nd day marks were---
Eric Futch's 22.55 beating Byron Robinson's 22.62 over the 200H!
Orlando Ortega winning the 110H in 13.29!
Tori Bowie taking the Women's 100 in 11.05.
Sharika Nelvis beating Danielle Williams in the 100H, 12.76 to 12.78!
The HS'ers ran good 100's also!
KeSean Carter beat Austin Kratz, 10.31 to 10.33!
And 15 year old phenom Brianna Williams crushed the field with her 11.35!
The only wind-aided mark came in the Men's 100, where a 2.4 helped Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes to a 9.99, with Akani Simbine 2nd in 10.03.
In 4th came Tyson Gay's 10.29.
The best distance marks came in the Women's 800 and 1500.
Ajee Wilson took the 2 lapper in 1:59.27.
Natoya Goule's 1:59.43 took the Silver!
Dawit Seyaum's 4:04.65 beat the PR 4:04.98 by Charlene Lipsey!
Drew Hunter gained his first win as a Pro!
His 3:56.72 won the Mile, with Nick Willis's 4:00.29 getting him just 6th!
Brandon McBride took the 800 in 1:45.18, beating Marcin Lewindowski's 1:46.11.
Back in 8th came HS'er Josh Hoey's 1:48.37!
This makes him 21st A-T HS!
In the Men's 3000, Cyrus Rutto beat Hagos Gebrhiwet and Muktar Edris with his 7:45.64.
The other two were in the 7:46's.
The Osaka GP meet saw some decent marks.
Shiying Liu's Javelin Throw of 220-2 moves her from 24th A-T World to 19th, tied with 1 other!
Huihui Lyu's 211-9 took 2nd!
Isaac Makwala sped the 200 in 19.96, wind of 0.9.
He beat Zhenye Xie's National Record of China--his 20.16!
Justin Gatlin won the 100 in 10.06, against a wind of 0.7!!
Pawel Fajdek had a HT of 257-7, beating the 253-5 of Bence Halasz!
Kristin Hixson took the PV with her 15-1.50.
Queen Harrison also fought a wind (-0.6) in winning the 100H in 13.01.
Ryan Gregson took the 1500 in 3:37.72!
A slight shock came in the Women's 100, where Yangli Wei's 11.17 beat Aaliyah Brown's 11.24!
In 3rd came Candace Hill, but far back in 11.43!!
The Tucson Elite meet had other good marks!
In a separate HT comp, Brooke Andersen reached 233-1.
Tom Walsh's SP of 71-3.50 beat Darrell Hill's 70-2.50!
This being a 2 day meet, with the days separated by a rest day, Hill had an earlier mark of 69-1.50!
Sam Mattis had a DT of 217-7.
In a different comp, Reggie Jagers reached 215-10.
Kelsey Card's DT sailed out 198-3.
BTW, where has she been recently?
Haven't heard anything from her for awhile--maybe a year or more!!
And Rachel Dincoff PR'ed in the DT with her 200-8!
One more mark from Tucson--
Tyson Jones threw the HS SP (12 pounder) 71-8.75, making him 15th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
That Jamaica meet also had a few other decent marks--
Janeive Russell took the 400H in 54.26.
Elaine Thompson ran home (Heh.) in 11.06, despite a wind of 0.2 against her!
Ronnie Baker used a max 2.0 to run the 100 in 10 flat!
Jessica Beard's 50.52 beat Jaide Stepter's 50.72 in a quick 400.
In the Women's LJ, Nigeria's Ese Brume beat a good field with her 22-4.50.
Among them was 6th placer Tianna Bartoletta, who leapt 21-4.25!
The former Oxy meet (now the USATF something or other!) had some okay marks--
Ce-Aira Brown won the Women's 800 in 2:00.38.
Hanna Green's 2:01.40 sent bell leader (58+) Brenda Martinez to 3rd in 2:02.03.
Lauren Paquette won the 5000 in 15:19.17, beating Canada's Rachel Cliff, who ran 15:20.66.
In separate races, Johnny Gregorek and Matthew Centrowitz ran 3:36.95 and 3:38.99 to take their respective sections!
In a significant windy mark, Brittney Reese reached 23-7.25 in the LJ, but she had a 3.0 wind blast propelling her!
A mark from a meet in Poland found Darlan Romani having a SP reach 71-11.75!
This breaks his own National Record of Brazil!
He falls just 3.25 inches short of making the World list!!
Michel Haratyk's 71-1.25 took 2nd!
I have a series of old (but not too old!) HS marks to report, thanks to FINALLY checking the lists on T&FN's website!!
Tamari Davis sped a 100 in 11.29!
Skylar Ciccolini added 10 more inches to her PR in the JT, reaching 173-11.
She moves from 11th A-T HS to 9th!
Trinity Clark's 165-3 JT makes her 20th A-T HS!
Three Women's HT marks made me revise my list--
Samantha Kunze's 195-6 makes her 7th A-T HS.
Shelby Moran's 191-9 makes her 16th A-T HS.
And Gianna Rao's 188-1 moves her from 24th A-T HS to 20th!
The Great Manchester Road 10K found BIG names winning--
Mo Farah's 28:27 nipped Moses Kipsiro by one second!
And Tirunesh Dibaba sped 31:08 to beat Joyciline Jepkosgei's 31:57 by 49 seconds!!
Finally, the "Night of 10000 PB's"--put on by GB's Highgate Harriers--saw a few good times--
Richard Ringer took the Men's race in 27:36.52, just edging Morad Amdoumi's 27:36.80.
GB's Andy Vernon was 6th in 27:52.32.
The Women's main race was taken by Israel's Chemtai Lonah Salpeter in 31:33.03.
This is the new National Record of Israel!
She beat Romania's Ancuta Bobacel's 31:43.12.
In 3rd came GB's Charlotte Arter, time of 32:15.71.
That is the wonderfully whimsical event that has a long tent on the track, under which the runners run, and the fans stand (4th lane & back?), sipping beers or whatever!
And this year, they added a "bridge overpass" over part of the track, where fans could also stand!!
Who says the Brits aren't inventive??!!
The Prefontaine Classic DL will be upon us in a few days.
Watch for my annual Preview of that fine meet sometime before the action begins on Friday night!!
One more thing--even if self-promoting!
I began a thread on the T&FN Message Board (in the Current Events section) titled "Will HS 10K Records ever be broken?".
I use stats from my Record Book to urge meet directors to hold track 10K's for HS'ers, and for top HS distance stars to give it a shot!
Check it out!
See you soon!

Two Mile leads Distances--3 weeks complete
A confession.
In my years of running, my favorite event was the Two Mile!
This was in the days of 440 yard tracks, so lap splits were easily done!
But in this era of metric, the English measurements have mostly gone the way of the Edsel or the corner phone booth!
Yet the group "Bring Back the Mile" has made it their life's work to do just that!
The Mile is still run in some major meets around the world, and not just in English-speaking countries!
So my life's work is to "bring back the TWO Mile"!!
There have been occasional races, but they're VERY few and far between.
In fact, before 2018, the last great Deuces were in 2014!
But this year, Drake put on a Women's race, and the Pre meet will hold one for the Men!
(The latter has a FANTASTIC field, and I just hope against hope they all perform 100% to their capabilities! If they do, my Men's OUTdoor 2 Mile lists will be greatly revised!)
I was hoping the same would be true for the race at Drake!
But alas, after their hyped entries of Jenny Simpson, Brenda Martinez, and Alexa Efraimson, I wasn't expecting much---and sadly, I was right!
Let's examine the results!
There was some difference of opinion prior to the race as to WHICH American Record Jenny would be chasing!
(Both Drake and Jenny said they wanted to get the AR!)
Well, some say Shannon Rowbury's 9:20.25 from 2014 was the AR.
Others--including this blog!--say it is Regina Jacobs's 9:11.97 from 1999.
Jacobs was busted for drugs, but NOT from that race!!
Anyway, long story short, Simpson's 9:16.78 fell between those two marks!
And, in this blog's opinion, her mark makes her SECOND A-T US--and 9th A-T World!
It also gets her the Meet Record and the Age 31 Record!
She also makes my World and US Combined Events lists for the 1 & 2 Mile.
Her times of 4:19.98 and 9:16.78 add to 13:36.76.
This makes her 2nd on my US C-E list, and 3rd on the World C-E list!!
Her 3000 split enroute was 8:43.39!
So it took her 33.39 for the final 218 meters!
Rachel Schneider surprised in 2nd, her 9:31.89 making her 5th A-T US, and 24th A-T World!
Martinez was 3rd in 9:32.82, making her 6th A-T US!
Stephanie Garcia was next in 9:37.86, making her 9th A-T US!
Before I get to the rest of the field, I must report on what a race that must have been for the runner-up spots!
Schneider's 3K split was 8:56.75, the 2nd best split of the race, so she held that position to the line!
But Garcia's 8:57.09 was ahead of Brenda's 8:57.30, so she had the worst final 218 of those 4--40.77!!
Schneider's was 35.14, while Martinez ran 35.52!
Efraimson was 5th--but far behind the front 4!--in 9:51.23.
Yet she still made the US list--in 18th position!
So did Sara Vaughn's 9:55.45--giving her 23rd A-T US!!
Cut OFF the World list was one Paula Radcliffe, whose 9:32.07 dated from 1999.
Cut OFF the US list were several athletes.
But just ONE of them ran their time AFTER leaving High School!
She is Jen Rhines, whose 9:59.07 mark came in 2002.
The HS crew includes---
Anna Rohrer, her 9:59.96 dating from 2015
Destiny Collins, her 10:00.90 also from 2015.
Molly Huddle (!!!) ran 10:01.08 in 2002--GONE!
Megan Goethals ran her 10:01.16 in 2010.
And Claudia Lane--who is STILL in High School!!--ran her 10:01.18 last year!
With all due respect to those great runs in HS, we must remember these HIGH SCHOOL marks were on the UNITED STATES list!
An ALL TIME US list!!
I can understand and LOVE the concept of a brilliant HS phenom making a US list!!
(Think people like Mary Cain, and maybe Katelyn Tuohy eventually!)
But let's be serious, folks!!
If runners like Emily's Sisson & Infeld, Marielle Hall, Shelby Houlihan, Rowbury (who is still with child!!), and a long list of other true elites, had been in that field, we'd have a truly magnificent A-T list---with only someone like Tuohy MAYBE edging onto it--in 23rd or 24th place--with a time far faster than 10 minutes or so!
Well, my "lecture" could go on forever, but we have many other fantastic marks to report from these past 3 weeks, so let's get to it!
For example, Karissa Schweizer (Add HER to the above list of US list possibles!) took the Drake 5000 in the Meet Record time of 15:23.21.
This makes her 14th A-T Collegiate!
Knocked FROM that list is the venerable Patti Sue Plumer, whose 15:29.0 dated from 1984!!
(Orwellian, yes??!! LOL)
Doha had a classy 3000 for the Women!
And Simpson was in that field, along with Helen Obiri!!
But it was Caroline Kipkirui who was dominant, as her 8:29.05 JUST nipped Agnes Tirop's 8:29.09!!
Third went to Master Steepler Hyvin Jepkemoi, her time being 8:30.51.
But that time, added to her 9:00.01 Steeple best, gives her a total time of 17:30.52!
That makes her 2nd A-T on my World Combined Events list for the 3000 and 3000SC!
Simpson COULD (should!!) have broken the American Record by Mary Slaney!!
But apparently the pace wasn't sent to that level!
Too bad!
Anyway, Jenny's 8:30.53--while not a PR--gives her the Age 31 Record!
Letesenbet Gidey's 8:30.96 took 5th!
So what about Ms Obiri?
Well, I don't know why, but she finished just 14th in the slow time of 8:53.65!
Maybe she fell??
In the Doha 1500, someone with the initials CS ran 3:59.92--and everyone said she won!
Except me!!
So the REAL winner was Nelly Jepkosgei with her 4:00.99.
Following were 4 Ethiopians with times in the 4:01.s!!
What a 4X1500 or 4 by Mile Relay team they could make!!
(Add Genzebe Dibaba to that team, and BANG, an easy World Record!!)
As per usual, Payton Jordon's distance fest produced its normal quotient of good marks!
Paul Chelimo was outrun by the teen phenom of the Ingebrigtsen family, Jakob, whose 3:39.06 PR took down Chelimo's 3:40.16!
Back in 6th came Matthew Centrowitz with his 3:40.74!
Henrik Ingebrigtsen took the 5000, but his 13:16.97 winner was matched exactly by 2nd placer Riley Masters!
Justyn Knight was 3rd in a good 13:18.71--not a PR!!
In 6th was Andy Trouard's 13:21.07!
This makes him 16th A-T Collegiate!
The Men's 10K was won by Shadrack Kipchirchir's 27:39.65!
Tyler Day's Collegiate leading time of 28:04.44 filled the 6th place slot!
Sara Vaughn had the fastest Women's 1500--4:11.70.
Marie Bouchard of USF took the 3000SC in 9:41.32.
This makes her 14th A-T Collegiate!
Meraf Bahta's 15:15.33 outran Rachel Schneider's 15:15.88!
Then followed a quality field of Collegiates!
Ednah Kurgat ran 15:20.06 in 7th, making her 13th A-T Collegiate!
Vanessa Fraser of Stanford finished 9th, but her 15:20.10 made her 14th A-T Collegiate!
Weini Kelati's 15:22.71 took 10th!
This made her 15th A-T Collegiate!
It also gave her the Frosh Class Record!!
Amy Eloise-Neale's 15:24.16 in 13th makes her 21st A-T Collegiate!
Another speedo--Allie Ostrander--fell during the race, and could finish only 18th--in 15:45.41.
Oh yes--cut OFF the Collegiate list was one Kara Wheeler--perhaps better known as Kara Goucher!!--with her mark dating from 2000!!
The 10K found Stanford alum Jessica Tonn in front in a big PR time of 31:54.83.
Also PR'ing were Sarah Pagano's 31:56.43 in 2nd, and Chelsea Blaase's 31:57.46 in 4th!
Galen Rupp is getting much closer to the true elites of the Men's Marathon!
He won the Prague race in 2:06:07, chopping more than 3 minutes from his previous PR!!
And his splits were very even--63:02 & 63:05!
He moves from 10th A-T US to 3rd!
He won by 55 seconds!!
BTW, his cash award was 45000 Euros, which translates to $57000 USD's!!
The World Team Walks races--held in China--saw the Women's 50K World list almost completely revised!!
(I don't have a list for the Walks---yet!!)
Rui Liang's 4:04:36 won the race, and makes her the new World Record holder!!
(The previous WR holder--Ines Henriques--was a DNF!!)
Second went to China's Hang Yin, time of 4:09:09!
Following were Claire Tallent's 4:09:33, Paola Perez's 4:12:56, and Faying Ma's 4:13:28!
But the line of fast marks continued, as places 3rd through 29th set Place Records!!
The Women's 20K saw Maria Michta Coffey's 1:33:40 make her 29th of 79 finishers!
The Collegiate Conferences produced some good marks.
Isaiah Harris took the Big 10 800 in a quick 1:45.31.
The ACC Women's 1500 was won by Rachel Pocratsky in 4:10.03!
It's the Meet Record, and makes her 21st A-T Collegiate!
Dorcas Wasike also got an ACC Meet Record, running the 10000 in 32:46.72.
She's a Frosh!
Erin Finn had some problems!!
She was fine through a first 5000 of 15:52'ish!
But then the heat got to her!
BAD!!
Her last lap--Heck, her final straight--probably took a century!!--but she still managed to wobble and bobble her way to the line--in 32:45.51--her 2nd 5K in 16:59!!
She fell to the track at the line, but is okay now!
She still won the race by 56 seconds!!
Amazing athlete--and person!!
She missed her own Meet Record by just 4 seconds!!
The Mountain West meet found Ednah Kurgat's 32:31.55 defeating Weini Kelati's 32:41.92 in the 10K.
Allie Ostander's 15:44.11 took the 5000.
Vanessa Fraser won the PAC-12 10000 in the Meet Record time of 33:10.84!
Moving back to April 28th, we find Michael Saruni running a Collegiate Record time of 1:43.25 in the 800!!
It's also the Soph Class Record!!
He wasn't on my DDD before, so he jumps all the way to 1st!!
He won by over 3 seconds--although someone rabbited for him through 400!
Emmanuel Korir had a blast winning the Doha 800 in 1:45.21.
Or should I say BLAST--as his last 200 took just 24.97!!
A 5K race in Hiroshima gave Rosemary Wanjiru the World lead!
Her time was 15:08.61.
The Shanghai DL Men's 5000 was close, with Paul Chelimo again being charged with all sorts of complaints about his "bullying" tactics--meaning he BULLS his way through the pack of runners with elbows flying!!
Anyway, his 13:09.66 was just 0.02 behind winner Berhanu Yemetanu's 13:09.64!
Muktar Edris ended just 5th--in 13:10.98!
Timothy Cheruiyot's 3:31.48 took the measure of Samuel Tefera's 3:31.63 in the 1500.
The Women's 3000SC was taken by Beatrice Chepkoech in 9:07.27.
Second went to Norah Tanui's 9:09.30.
Numerous Relays produced some decent marks!
The National Relays meet in Arkansas saw Texas take the DMR in 9:34.70.
In 3rd came Florida's 9:35.90.
This moves them from 23rd A-T School to 21st!
Stanford took the Women's SMR in 3:41.59!
That's 3rd A-T Collegiate!
Olivia Baker anchored in 2:00.90!!
Drake's DMR went to Missouri, time of 11:07.59.
This makes them 23rd A-T School!
Karissa Schweizer was the anchor, but don't have her split!
The Penn meet had several good marks--
Mississippi State's 7:14.31 defeated Indiana's 7:15.24 in the Men's 4X800.
Villanova won the DMR in 9:34.37.
Notre Dame was 2nd in 9:35.18, making them 19th A-T School!
Princeton's 9:35.74 was 3rd, making them 22nd A-T School.
On the Women's side, Villanova took the 4X800 in 8:19.98.
Claire Buttner anchored in 2:02.63!
Buttner also anchored their DMR team, the winning time being 11:01.94.
Her split was 4:36.
Ajee Wilson and Charlene Lipsey had a couple of quick races!
At Penn, they ran the Mile, with Lipsey's 4:31.19 defeating Wilson's 4:35.29.
But at a race at Swarthmore, Wilson's 4:05.18 took about a 7 second chunk off her PR in the 1500!!
Lipsey's 4:07.73 also cut a few seconds off her PR!
A Pennsylvania meet (not the Relays meet!) saw Ce'Aira Brown dip under 2 minutes in the 800, her 1:59.70 winning by 4.74 seconds!!
Josh Hoey, a HS'er, ended 6th in the 800, but his time of 1:48.63 was an OUTdoor PR!
It still misses my HS list by 0.15 seconds!
Other good marks--
Adva Cohen ran 9:52.37 in the 3000SC.
A Frosh at Iowa College, this gave her the Junior College Record!!
Allie Bucharski's 15:39.17 took a 5000 race in Virginia.
Devin Dixon ran the 800 in 1:45.62 at the LSU meet.
Sammy Watson took the Women's race there in 2:02.49.
Johnny Gregorek took the Penn Relays Mile in 3:54.94.
A BIG name was REMOVED from my HS DDD list!!
Dalton Hengst's 3:45.59--which made him 24th A-T HS--knocked one Marty Liquori from my list!
Liquori's 3:45.6 dated from 1967--FIFTY ONE YEARS ago!!!
(We need to time 1500's enroute to these fast 21st century HS Miles!!!--See above!)
Dustin Horter's 4:04.82 becomes the HS Leader in that venerable event!
This was in Ohio.
In Minnesota, Emily Covert--a star during XC season--took the 3200 in 10:17.41.
In 2nd came Ms Lauren Ping!!
Her time was 10:25.12.
Let's not forget she's a SEVENTH GRADER!!!
Another good 3200 (UGH!!) saw Olivia Theis win in 10:03.95 over Ericka Vanderlende's 10:05.01--in Michigan!
But set those measly little numbers to the side--I've got some numbers that will make those look like nothing!!
Ms Katelyn Tuohy took to the track at NY's Loucks Games--again in one of those abominable 3200's!!
She hit the halfway point in 4:46!
Four-Forty Six, folks, for her first 1600!!
She faded to 5:01, but her end time of 9:47.88 was one of the best at that alien distance!!
(IMHO!! LOL)
But she was timed enroute (by hand, it seems!) at 3000 in 9:10.4.
I've counted hand-timed splits before, and I'll do so again here!
It makes her 3rd A-T on that list!
And if the race had been just 18 meters longer.....!!!!!
Hint--The Brooks PR and the NBN meets hold Two Mile races--NOT 3200's!!
Are you listening, Katelyn??
I'll end the results portion with the NYC 10K Road Race!
Rhonex Kipruto--a Kenyan teen--took the Men's race in 27:08!
Second was Mathew Kimeli's 27:19.
The Women's race went to Buze Diriba's 32:04.
Aselefech Mergia's 32:06 took 2nd.
Leading American was Laura Thweatt's 32:22 in 4th!!
Just as in the Sprints post--regarding Tyrese Cooper's arrests--I'm sad to report here that Asbel Kiprop allegedly tested positive for EPO in an out-of-competition test!
In a lengthy detailed statement, Kiprop strongly denies any wrongdoing!
It's available through Let's Run, and maybe other sites!
Well worth reading!
The loss of Kiprop--for however long--would be devastating to the sport--and maybe to the integrity and respect of many other top-rated Kenyan runners!!
More details to come?
Well, friends, I thank you so much for reading all 4 of these BELATED reports on the three weeks of action I missed while awaiting my computer's return!!
It's been a BUSY 3 days since I came back online!
But I'll be back in just 3 more days with this weekend's report!!
See you soon!!

That's 3rd A-T Collegiate!

Hammering the Record Book--3 weeks worth
How do I keep ooming up with these crazy titles?
Anyway, as promised, I'm dividing up the results (from my computer disaster-enforced 3 weeks of absence) into 4 event groups.
Already done are the Jumps and Sprints!
This one is on the Throws---and as you can tell by the title, the Hammer Throw will be featured!
Last will be the Distances, where the Two Mile will get the headlines!
So, we seem to have a "New Guard" when it comes to the Hammer Throw!
At least on the female side!
Speaking of the US only, the likes of Amber Campbell & Amanda Bingson have been replaced by Maggie Ewen, DeAnna Price, and Brooke Andersen!
But Hey, welcome to the fray!!
Andersen's emergence this season especially enthralls!
She's PR'ed this season by close to 20 feet---and she doesn't seem to be done yet!
And what about Ewen?
Amazing athlete, in that she's now maybe as good a Shot Putter as she is HT'er!
And even the Discus has improved a lot for her!
(Will the Javelin be next??)
Onward to this blog's "raison d'etre"!!
Brooke Andersen is still a Collegiate!
So her improvements are more notable than if she were a Pro athlete!
Thus her recent HT of 243-5 makes her 2nd A-T Collegiate, moving her up from 5th!
And she moves from 10th A-T US to 5th, tied with 1 other!
Maggie Ewen was 2nd, best mark of 239-6!
Then Ewen went to work!
Her PAC-12 winner measured 244-0!
It broke the Meet Record!
Alyssa Wilson, better known as a Shot Putter, is suddenly a 218-3 HT'er, as she finished 2nd with that mark!
Ewen added the SP and DT, her 63-0.75 getting another Meet Record.
Her DT winner was 196-2!
Previously, she'd upped her Shot PR to 63-10.25 at the Tucson meet!!
It's the Collegiate Record, and breaks her own Senior Class Record as well!
Her series was interesting also!
She had 3 Puts at 18.45 or 18.46 (metrically speaking!), then her winner was exactly one meter farther--19.46!
She moves from 2nd A-T Collegiate, to the Top!
And from 10th to 9th A-T US!
DeAnna Price is another to watch---on the WORLD scene!!
Her HT of 249-2 at a meet in Indiana moves her from 4th A-T US to 2nd!
But she also made the World list, as she's 22nd A-T there!!
Another Hammerer of note--and he's just a HS Soph!!--is Trey Knight!
He had a prodigious INdoor season with the Weight Throw!
And now he's continuing OUTdoors with the WT's sidekick, the Hammer!
His latest PR measured 228-6!
This--IMHO--doesn't come close to his PR potential, as measured against his WT accomplishments!
Much more room for improvement here!!
His mark still leaves him about 15 feet shy of the Soph Class Record!
And he's 2.5 feet short of making my HS list!!
Stay tuned!
Raven Saunders continues her re-emergence from her personal woes of earlier this year!
She reached 64-0.25 recently, easily beating Jessica Ramsey's 59-5.75!
At that same meet, in 2 separate comps, it seems, Gwen Berry threw the Hammer 239-0, while Great Britain's Sophie Hitchon reached 240-3!
The Shanghai DL saw Saunders's 61-1.50 take 2nd to Lijiao Gong's 65-7 World Leader!
Way back in 8th came the venerable Valerie Adams, who could only reach 59-1.25!!
Just a bad day??
Another Chinese to perform good there was Huihui Lu.
Her Javelin winner of 219-4 broke her own Meet Record!
Ryan Crouser has been HOT of late!
At Drake, his SP went out 72-2.50 from the ring!
But he also had FIVE fouls!!
That one good toss defeated Tom Walsh's 71-7.25!
Walsh, however, only fouled once, with his 5 fair throws all measuring over 70 feet!!
So he wins the Best Series prize!!
Crouser made up for those fouls at a meet in Chula Vista!
He reached 72-9.75, and had FOUR over 72 feet!!
In fact, all 6 measured at least 70-9.75!!
Doha saw Sandra Perkovic nail a LONG Discus Throw--234-2!!
It missed her PR by just 1 inch, but gets her the Meet Record!!
Yaime Perez's 219-3 took Silver!
Mentioning earlier Throwers who have moved out from their specialties, we seem to have 2 others who are doing the same!
Denzel Comenentia seemed to be best at the Hammer, with a 250-3 PR!
But he recently improved his SP mark to 68-6 at the SEC!
This makes him 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
He also did the HT, his 249-1 getting the SEC Meet Record!
Second there was Anders Eriksson's 243-5!
This makes him 21st A-T Collegiate!
Alyssa Wilson is another to spread her wings!
In HS, she of course made the Shot Put her own, breaking Raven Saunders's HSR's, IN & OUT!!
But she's also quite adept at other Throws!
Now a Frosh at UCLA, she nailed 3 winners at the UCLA-USC Dual meet!!
Her SP went out 55-8.25!
(She has yet to PR in that event!)
She also won the DT with 180-9, and the HT with her 205-4!!
Already mentioned (See above!) was her HT mark of 218-3!
Another Maggie Ewen in the making??
Another to set an SEC Meet Record was Anderson Peters in the JT!
His winning mark was 269-2!
Ioannis Kyriazis's 263-6 took 2nd!
But the best JT comp came at Doha's DL!
Johannes Vetter's 1st round spear chuck went out 300-5!!
But then Thomas Rohler sent his out 301-1 in Round 2 for the winner!
This is the first time two went over 300 in the same meet, thus giving Vetter the best 2nd Place mark!
Andres Hofmann took the best 3rd Place prize with his 295-6!!
Not a PR, however!
In fourth came Neeraj Chopra's 286-10.
This breaks his own National Record of India!!
The Multi's saw some good action these past 3 weeks!
An old mark (from a Virginia meet on April 20 & 21) is Tim Ehrhardt's 8044 Decathlon winner there!
In a meet in Italy, Martin Roe's 8228 winner gave him Norway's National Record!
In the Heptathlon, Erica Bougard's 6327 (at that same Italy meet!) took the World lead!!
Alex Gochenour took runner-up with her 6063.
The SEC winner was Tyra Gittens's 6074!
This makes her 18th A-T Collegiate!
The Big 10 had an interesting name take 2nd in its Hept!
Georgia Ellenwood was the winner with her 6173!
This is the Meet Record, and makes her 9th A-T Collegiate!!
But 2nd went to the inimitable Ayesha Champagne!!
You might remember I made a big to-do about her ALLEGED INdoor LJ mark of 21-6.25, or 6.56 metric!
While not absolutely proven false, it was never confirmed 100% as being real either!
She'd never been over about 5.80 before!
The Jamaican IS a good Javelin Thrower, however!
And her 162-6 there helped propel her to a score of 5821, taking 2nd!
I didn't see her complete set of marks, so have no idea what her LJ measured, but I'd bet my life that it was well below 6 meters--let alone 6.56!!
Haley Crouser FINALLY got a new PR in the JT!
She won the Big 12 meet with her 182-7, her first improvement since 2012!!
That meet saw a couple of other good Throws!
Alexandra Emilianov's DT mark of 197-8 fell just 6 inches shy of making my Collegiate DDD!
In the HT, Janae Krasanavoid's 223-9 winner makes her 21st A-T Collegiate!
High Schoolers had several good marks, mostly in their State meets or regionals!
At Mt SAC, Sydney Juszczyk had a JT of 161-8.
Just a Frosh, she misses my HS list by 13 inches!
Payden Montana's SP mark of 50-7 took 2018's OUTdoor lead!
By the way, Montana's mark came at the Penn Relays!!
Skylar Ciccolini was busy!
At Penn, her 172-2 JT moved her from 19th A-T HS to 11th!
Then she raised that to 173-1, but she remains 11th on the list!
Tzuriel Pedrigo's JT of 238-6 moves him from 7th A-T HS to 5th!
In the Oregon State meet, Shelby Moran's DT measured 179-7.
This makes her 16th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
In the Illinois affair, John Meyer's SP of 70-6.50 misses my HS list by just one half inch!!
In Oklahoma, Patrick Larrison took over the 2018 lead in the DT with his 210-9!
Other good marks---
At Mt SAC, Alex Young reached 249-10 in the Hammer Throw.
This moves him from 24th A-T US all the way to 12th!
Jordan Geist won the Tucson SP with his 66-11.50!!
Daniel Haugh's HT of 241-2 misses my Collegiate DDD by 7 inches!
At the Indiana meet, Payton Otterdahl's SP mark of 68-7 makes him 19th A-T Collegiate!
He's a Junior at North Dakota State!
He improved to 68-9.25 at his Conference meet (Summit League), but he remains 19th on the list!
Rudy Winkler's HT of 242-3 gets him the ACC Meet Record!
Tripp Piperi won the Big 12 SP with 66-3!
While it's not a Throws-related event, I want to close this post by telling you of an announcement by Pole Vaulter Mary Saxer that she's retired from the sport!!
In a lengthy but heartfelt statement, she said she takes great pride that she was the first HS Woman to clear 14 feet!
She also said she's pregnant, with the baby due in November!!
Congratulations to this great athlete, and here's hoping she finds a new niche in which to soar!!
See you soon with my last 3-week wrap-up, covering the Distances!!

Juggling the Sprints--3 Weeks Worth
And who best to "juggle" these numbers than Ms Juggler Queen Herself---Ms Sydney McLaughlin??!!
Tell me, am I the only person who believes McLaughlin might be the GREATEST-EVER Female Track & Field athlete---at least, in the making??
She's 18 years old--turns 19 on August 7th--and yet she has the breadth and width and depth of inherent talent that turns heads like a passing President or movie star might!
If I had the guts--and sometimes I do!--I'd predict right now that she can break the WORLD Records in the 300, 400, 600, 800, 100H, 400H, the LJ, and maybe even the Heptathlon and/or the Decathlon!!
And do so by wide margins!!
She makes you believe!
Because SHE believes!!
I was once enamored of the budding talents of Mary Cain, declaring she'd run X times in X events before her 20th birthday!
Didn't come to pass!
Well, those feelings are even stronger here!
Because we have an athlete who keeps on keeping on--who began as a HS Frosh, and now, as a College Frosh at Kentucky--keeps getting better, and better, and...well, just blasts through every barrier of negativity and doubt so called "experts" throw her way!
Enough!
Let the FACTS speak for themselves!!
For these past 3 weeks (See my previous post!), it began for her at Arkansas's National Relays meet, held the same weekend as Drake and Penn!
There, she ran 2 events, and in both, she was sensational!!
Her final nailed her year old PR of 53.82 (the USATF race last year) by 0.22, her 53.60 breaking the Frosh Class Record by 1.25 seconds!!
(That by itself is one amazing FACT!!)
She also broke the Age 18 Record!
It made her 4th A-T Collegiate, but she remained 15th A-T US!
On my US Combined Events list for the 400 & 400H, her times of 50.07 and 53.60 added to 1:43.67.
She remained 5th on that list.
She also ran 3rd leg on Kentucky's 4X400 Relay!
Their time was 3:27.07, while her leg took just 49.47 of it!!
Now let's go to Collegiate Conference Central---aka the SEC---to see what The Juggler did next!!
Oh boy!!
Oh man!!
Ohhhhhh, Baby!!!!!
Turning her magnificent wheels like a runaway semi going down a steep hill, McLaughlin merely took Kori Carter's once-special Collegiate Record of 53.21--and turned it into mincemeat!!
Her 52.75 took 0.46 seconds off Carter's Record--and Kori Monster was no slouch!!
It also removed a giant chunk of time--0.85 seconds--off her own PR set just days earlier (See above!)!!
(She'd run her heat in a quick 54.85!)
Besides the CR, she also smashed her own Frosh Class and Age 18 Records!
It obviously gave her the Meet Record too!
And this time also moved her up on my Combined Events lists--both of them!
On the US list (her 50.07 and 52.75 adds to 1:42.82), she moved from 5th to 1st!!
Yes, she is now Number ONE on that list!!
On the World list, her total time makes her 4th!!
She moves from 4th A-T Collegiate to the Top!
From 15th A-T US to 5th, tied with 1 other!
AND she becomes 9th A-T on the World list, tied with 1 other!
To finish off this paean, her entry on that latter DDD cuts OFF one Debbie Flintoff, whose 53.17 dated from 1988!!
But she wasn't done!
In the 4X400, there was a botched hand-off--apparently between Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Syd!
Haven't seen the video, but apparently McLaughlin had to stop in order to get the baton in her hand, then re-start her engine!
This cost her a few tenths, according to several sources!
Her split of 49.83--some say--might have been 49.00 if she'd gotten her normal start!!
BTW, Kentucky's 3:25.99 won the race, setting the Meet Record!
It also moved them from 10th A-T School to 7th!
Five other teams broke 3:30--Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Alabama!
While we're on Relays--and the SEC--it's a good time to report on LSU's new Collegiate Record in the 4X100!!
Their 42.05 took care of their own (and Oregon's) 42.12's from last year!!
Running with Aleia Hobbs on anchor, it gave them the CR, and broke their own Meet Record!!
They moved from 1st A-T School, tied with UO, to 1st, but losing the Ducks!!
Kentucky (with JCQ, but not McL!) was 2nd in 42.30!
They moved from 4th A-T School to 3rd!
Arkansas was 3rd, their 43.26 moving them from 16th A-T School to 15th!
Then followed Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee, all within 0.04 seconds of each other!!
LSU had also won a meet on their home turf in 42.49!
USC took both of the Sprint Relays at the PAC-12, winning in 42.85 and 3:30.45!
Houston won the Penn Relays 4X400 in 3:01.82.
This made them 19th A-T School!
A VERY close finish for the Men's 4X400 at the SEC's, with both LSU and Arkansas ending in 38.76, with Florida 3rd in 38.95!
Texas A&M took the 4X400 in 3:01.17, with LSU and Florida several tenths behind!
Purdue's Women had a pair of good Relays at Drake!
Their 4X400 took just 3:28.42, which was an 0.10 second PR!
They remain 17th A-T School!
Their 4X200 team, with 2 different runners, ran 1:32.24.
The 4X400 team's 3:28.98 gave them the Big 10 Meet Record!
The 400's produced several speedy races!
Steven Gardiner was maybe the highlight, as his Doha W in 43.87 broke his own National Record of the Bahamas!
It also gave him the Meet Record, and moved him from 13th A-T World to 12th, tied with 1 other!
On my World C-E list for the 100, 200, and 400, he is now 6th A-T!
Let me explain something!
On that particular C-E, I give a slow time of 10.50 to an athlete (Men only!) who has never run a timed 100! I figure that's fair!
So Gardiner's 1:14.12 total time is gotten from a 10.50, 19.75, and the 43.87!
Abdelelah Haroun was 2nd in 44.50!
Adding 10 hurdles to the mix, Doha also gave us a quick time in the 400H!
By someone I'd never heard of!!
Abderahmane Samba of Qatar ran 47.57, giving him the Meet Record, his National Record, and made him 18th A-T World!!
The 2nd DL--Shanghai--found Gardiner winning again, this time in 43.99.
It also set a Meet Record!
Isaac Makwala took Silver in 44.23, while TJ'er supreme Christian Taylor was 5th with a 45.24!!
The SEC meet had a great Men's 400!
Nathon Allen's 44.28 edged Nathan Strother's 44.34!
Allen moves from 13th A-T Collegiate to 6th!
And he gets the Soph Class Record!
Strother's time makes him 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
He'd run a 45.01 (and a 200 in 20.76) at Arkansas's National Relays meet!
Michael Norman also ran a quick 400---at the PAC-12 meet!
His 44.40 moves him from 15th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others, to 12th!
He ran 44.74 in winning the USC-UCLA dual meet!
He also ran a windy 19.84 at the former meet!
Kendall Ellis ran the College Crowd's fastest 400 of 2018---Syd the Kid notwithstanding---her 49.99 giving her the PAC-12 Meet Record!
It moves her from 11th A-T Collegiate to 2nd!
And on the US list, it moves her from 22nd to 21st, tied with 1 other!
Oregon's Makenzie Dunmore took the Silver in 50.63.
This makes her 19th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!
Sharika Barnett's 50.69 makes her 23rd A-T Collegiate!
Rai Benjamin's 48.46 nabbed the 400H at the SEC's!
Running a legal 19.83 (1.3) was Noah Lyles, setting the Doha Meet Record!
He moves from 22nd A-T US to 12th, tied with 1 other!
He misses the World list by just 0.01 seconds!
Jereem Richards took 2nd in 19.99!
The SEC, as always, had some speedy stuff going down in the 100 and 200!
Aleia Hobbs took the 100 in 10.92, getting the Meet Record!
Wind was 1.5, but she sped her heat in 10.93 with a negative breeze of 0.4!
Shania Collins took 2nd in 10.99, making her 11th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!!
Tamara Clark was a quick 3rd, time of 11.02!
This makes her 17th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!!
Kendal Williams's 9.99 (1.1) makes him 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 4 others!
He also won the 200 in 20.15, and took his 100 heat in 10.08!
At the National Relays meet, Collins ran 11.10 and 22.57 in the 100 & 200, with JCQ 2nd in the 200 in 22.69!
But it was Lynna Irby's 22.25 that opened my eyes a bit wider!
Knew she was fast, but not THAT fast!!
This makes her 10th A-T Collegiate!
And she misses the US list by just 0.04 seconds!!
The short hurdles events got some real action!!
JCQ---aka Jasmine Camacho-Quinn---ran 12.40 at the SEC!
Using a mild 1.2 wind, she broke her own National Record of Puerto Rico, and got the Meet Record.
She moves from 5th A-T Collegiate to 2nd, a mere 0.01 behind Brianna Rollins (McNeal's) 12.39 CR!
She's also now 16th A-T World!!
Alexis Duncan was 2nd in 12.79!
JCQ's heat was in 12.58, with a 1.6 breeze.
Speaking of Rollins-McNeal, she won the Shanghai DL in a Meet Record time of 12.50, with Sharika Nelvis 2nd in 12.52, and Kendra Harrison 3rd in 12.56!
But Harrison's 12.53 (0.5) had taken the Doha affair from Rollins-McNeal's 12.58.
Dawn Harper-Nelson---this being her farewell year--was 8th in 13.21!
Harrison used a 2.5 wind to push her to a still-nice 12.37 time!!
Alysha Johnson won a Tucson meet in 12.75, with a minus 0.3 wind!
She misses the Collegiate list by 0.01 seconds!
Devynne Charleton's 12.76 took her heat at the Big 10, wind of 0.9!
She won the final in 13.07!
The Big 12 saw Rochelle Burton speed a 12.65, with a measly 0.2 at her back!
This equalled her PR, so she remains 11th A-T Collegiate!
Pedrya Seymour was 2nd in 12.72.
This makes her 22nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!
Cut OFF my Collegiate DDD was Dior Hall's 12.74, dating from 2015!
Chanel Brissett's 12.75 at the PAC-12 gave her the Age 18 Record!!
Grant Holloway inched up his 110H PR!
His 13.15 (0.9) at the SEC got him the Meet Record!
He moves from 2nd A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 2nd, but with no ties!
A surprise (Shock??) in 2nd was Daniel Roberts, another one of those I confess not having heard of before!!
But his 13.27 made him 10th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other!!
Cory Poole, best known as a 400H guy, was 4th in 13.68!!
Well, I guess it's about time I began gathering all my "other" results in the Sprints and move to my more condense version!!
But I guarantee there's LOTS of great stuff to come!!
For example, Ashley Henderson ran the 100 in 10.98 with an 0.3 breeze!
This moves her from 14th A-T Collegiate, tied with 1 other, to 9th, tied with 1 other!
Shakima Wimbley's 22.34 (1.7) took a meet in Clermont!
There was a deep field finish in the Doha Women's 100!
With a wind of 1.5, Marie Josee Ta Lou won in 10.85, leaving her 0.03 seconds from the World DDD list!
Blessing Okagbare's 10.90 was 2nd, while Elaine Thompson (10.93), Murielle Ahoure (10.96), Carina Horn (10.98), and Dafne Schippers (11.03) followed!
Horn's time broke her own National Record of South Africa!
Some REALLY quick times came from the Florida State HS meet!!
Best, for sure, was Frosh Tamari Davis's 200 of 22.48!!
Yes, that 2nd number is a 2, not a 3!!
She SHATTERED the Frosh Class Record by a whopping 0.58 seconds!!
And eTN lists it as the Age 15 Record!!
It makes her 3rd A-T HS!!
As a FROSH!!
She also took 2nd in the 100 in 11.36, wind against her of 0.9!!
Anthony Schwartz also clicked along---doubling in 10.07 and 22.41--albeit with respective breezes of 2.5 and 2.8!
He also ran as part of his American Heritage HS's 4X100 Relay time of 40.14!!
In another meet, Schwartz ran 10.13 (2.0), moving him from 6th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 4th, tied with 1 other!
He also had a windy 200 in 20.49!
The Shanghai meet had a quartet of good races!
Delilah Muhammed nipped Jeneive Russell in the 400H, 53.77 to 53.78!
Omar McLeod also had a close call, his 13.16 in the 110H beating Orlando Ortega's 13.17!
Great Britain's Reece Prescod sped the 100 in 10.04, just beating Bingtian Su's 10.05.
Justin Gatlin and Andre De Grasse ended just 7th and 8th in respective times of 10.20 and 10.25!
And SMU--Shaunae Miller-Uibo, had no problem winning over Dafne Schippers in the 200, 22.06 to 22.34, battling an 0.4 wind!
A Tucson meet saw the Ducks winning a 4X100 in 42.70, while Duck Frosh Lauren Rain Williams won the 200 in 22.51.
The Arkansas meet saw Arkansas taking the 4X100 in 38.59, while Florida won the 4 lap Relay in 3:02.59!
Kentucky's Women took that 4X100 in 42.84, beating Tennessee's 43.59!
The Vols missed my Collegiate list by 0.01 seconds!!
The Penn Relays saw a pair of USA Red teams win Relays!
The Men took the 4X100 in 38.39, and the 4X400 in 3:01.31!
The shorter race had Justin Gatlin on 2nd leg!
The Women's 4X400 was taken by USA Red's 3:26.73!
Gatlin ran the Grenada 100 in 10.05 (0.5)!
Southern Miss took the Conference USA meet's 4X100 in 38.89, making them 22nd A-T School!
LaShawn Merritt and Tori Bowie took the 200's in 20.57 and 22.75!
Kori Carter won the 100H in 12.79 with a 1.1 wind.
The Texas HS meet had some solid marks!
A HSR was broken in the Men's 4X200 Relay, with The Woodlands 1:23.25 taking the honors!
Kesean Carter was the anchor!
He'd won the 100 in 10.22, making him 19th A-T HS, tied with 1 other!
Seven Lakes was 2nd in the Relay, their 1:23.42 making them 3rd on that list!
The latter school also won the 4X100, their 39.80 missing the HSR by just 0.04 seconds!
The Woodlands took 2nd in 39:98!
Seventh was 40.37!!
Another rather obscure and unheralded Relay Record fell!
And this time it was a WORLD & US Record!!
In an 800 Medley (100, 100, 200, 400), the USA Red team (at Penn) ran 1:35.20, getting both of those major Records!
Raevyn Rogers ran the anchor leg in 50.48!
Imagine Rogers repeating her 49.77 leg from a year or so back!
We'd have a time in the mid-1:34's!!
Speaking of speedy Relay legs, how about Gabby Thomas's alarming 49.44 on Harvard's 4X400 winner at the Heps!!
That's just the fastest Collegiate Relay leg known so far!!
Harvard's time was 3:36.44!
She also won the 100 and 200 in 11.27 and 22.76, and ran a leg on her School's 4X100 for good measure!
Probably didn't even break a sweat!!
Marlon Humphrey had a busy day at his Alabama State meet!
His HS-leading 36.00 over 300H led the way, but he also did the 110H in 14.00 and a flat 400 in 47.43!
Tia Jones won a 100H race in 13.03, wind of 1.8!
The Guadeloupe meet saw Allyson Felix win the 100 in 11.30 with zero wind aid!
Shakima Wimbley won the 400 in 50.64!
Tyson Gay sped a 100 in 10.11 in Clermont, using a 1.9 wind!
Kaylin Whitney---Remember her??--won a 200 in 22.93 (1.5), one of her better times these past couple of years or so!
Blessing Okagbare won a 200 in 22.43, wind of 1.2.
Georgeanne Moline took a 400H in 54.86!
I know this is an extremely lengthy one already, but I need to add a somber note before I close!
Tyrese Cooper, one of the most promising and talented young athletes on the planet, was arrested on multiple charges at the end of April!
These include alleged auto theft and burglary!
Stories since then make this story even sadder!
Apparently, he was kicked out of the home where he was staying for reasons unknown, or at least not confirmed!
While he got an early release from jail so he could compete in the Florida State meet, he apparently was arrested again on further charges!
Until I know more, I hesitate to say anything else!
Cooper says he fell in with the wrong crowd, and seems remorseful!
I have no idea how this will play out, but these charges are serious, and at worst, could lead to some prison time!
He had turned 18 on March 21st, so if convicted, can be sentenced to an adult prison, not Juvenile detention!!
If he's guilty--or even if he's not--he needs to get his act together--on and off the track!
Find some decent people to hang with!
Go to college, or turn Pro, and set himself up in a good home!
On the track, he needs to cut back his racing schedule!
Doubling and tripling in EVERY meet not only will wear out his body, but won't allow him to run the SUPER fast times everyone believes he's capable of!!
Dude, get it together!
PLEASE!!
Be back soon with my 3rd post---covering the past 3 weeks of Throws action!!

The Arkansas meet saw Arkansas taking the 4X100 in 38.59, while Florida won the 4 lap Relay in 3:02.59!
Kentucky's Women took that 4X100 in 42.84, beating Tennessee's 43.59!

PLEASE!!
Be back soon with my 3rd post---covering the past 3 weeks of Throws action!!
3 Weeks of Jumps--Triple the Fun
A brief word about my absence & my return!
If you read my previous (short) post, you know my computer croaked--but "just" for 22 days--until a good guy named John repaired it & returned it to me less than 2 days ago!
Since then, I've been busy catching up!
(In 2015, I believe, I got food poisoning right before I was about to preview--and report on--the INdoor NCAA and NBIN meets. Twelve days later, I got better, but when I realized how far behind I was with reporting results, I almost wished I were still in bed!! LOL)
Long story short, I have 34 pages of notes filled with all the great Records & Marks I would have normally ALREADY reported to you from all the meets since my computer croaked hours after my April 22nd post!
So, how to divide this up?
At first, I was going to do a post (or 2) for each week of my absence--the first covering Penn & Drake, etc--the 2nd being about Doha & Payton Jordan, the 3rd---well, you get the idea!
But as I gathered all these 34 pages of results (with the great assistance of T&FN's eTN!!), I saw how some athletes had been in more than one meet, and a few had broken a Record they'd broken a week or so earlier! (Hi, Syd!! LOL)
Thus, I made a decision!
And here--briefly--is what I'm doing!
I'm dividing up my reports into 4 posts!
This one--as the title implies--is about the Jumps--all 4 of them, covering both genders and all the 22 days I missed!
Then I'll follow with another on the Sprints (100, 200, 400, 110 & 100H, 400H, and the Sprint-oriented Relays!).
Then will come a post on the Throws, which will include the Multi's!
Finally, I'll cover the Distances from the 800 through the 10000--to include the longer Relays and any Road events I missed!
So, buckle up, grab a snack, and enjoy discovering (or remembering!) what happened in our favorite sport since April 22nd!!
Oh, those Triplers!!
And I mean BOTH genders!!
Tori Franklin ended the INdoor season with some fancy PR's--reaching the mid-46 foot level!
Normally, you'd look for her to spread her Oiselle wings out to---maybe!--47 low, or even add a full foot--to 47-6 or so!!
So what to make of a meet where she extends THAT yet ANOTHER foot??!!
Yes, Tori Franklin---"just" another wannabe still almost two feet behind Keturah Orji's OUTdoor American Record of 48-3.25--SMASHED her PR's--IN or OUT--by TWO FREAKING FEET & more!!!
And what a series it was!!
She began with a 47-8.50---extending her PR by over a foot in one fell swoop (or Hop, Step, and Jump!).
Then she added ANOTHER foot to that in Round 2!!
That was her ultimate reach, the 48-8.25---Yes, I said 48-8.25!!---that bug-eyed this 3-week-absentee from the Online world where LIFE existed!!
Absolutely amazing!!
(And think how those Oiselle "Birds" must have reacted!!!)
Yes, it's the American Record!
She moves from (ignoring her initial leap up to 47-8.50!) 2nd A-T US to 1st!
She is now 6.25 inches from making the World list!!
And she beat 2nd placer Ana Pelateiro's 47-3.75 by 16.50 inches!!
Here's her entire series--47-8.50---48-8.25---48-6---47-9.75---a foul---and 47-8.50!!
So what did Ms Orji do??
Merely broke her own Collegiate Record at an SEC meet that, as always, is possibly better than the NCAA Championship meet!!
And added a PR in her "other" event--the LJ!
That one sent her 22-4.25 from take-off to sand, and made her 9th A-T Collegiate, tied with 2 others!
Her TJ measured 47-11.75, breaking her Collegiate and Senior Class Records!!
She also--obviously--got the SEC Meet Record!
Yet she is now 5 inches (her Rio PR is 48-3.25!) behind Ms Franklin!!
Who woulda thunk??!!
Meanwhile, Caterine Ibarguen is re-emerging into the elite realm!
She opened with a mark of 47-8.50 in Colombia!
(Does that number look familiar??)
Then she got serious, extending that out to 48-6.75!!
But that mark only makes her Number TWO on the 2018 OUTdoor list!!
This could be a VERY interesting year in the Women's TJ!!
But what about us Guys??
Well, guess what?!
PPPP is BACK!!
And so is his rivalry with Christian Taylor!!
Remember those 59's they hit in Doha a couple years ago?
Well, they came close---Yes, in Doha!!
You've heard the saying "3rd time's the charm"!
It was Round 3 where both hit their best marks!
And it was Pablo Pedro etc Pichardo's 58-10.75 that ruled the day!
Taylor's 58-5.25 was one of his best recent marks, but just not enough!
But, Hey, Welcome back, you two!!
Oh yeah, almost forgot---Taylor's mark gives him the Age 27 Record!!
If you're wondering if Will Claye is going to take time out from his singing & recording stuff, well just check out the results from the meet in Guadeloupe!!
He didn't win---Almir dos Santos did with his 57-6.25!
But Mr Hip-Hop reached a solid 57-1--which left him in 2nd---just nipping one PPPP (See above!)---who had the same mark, but hit it once to Claye's pair!!
Let's move to the other "jump" that gave up some amazing stats during my absence!!
The Pole Vault!
No, there weren't any World or US Records broken!
In fact, the best mark goes to our fave "kid"--Mondo Duplantis!!
But I'll get around to him in a moment!
I want to talk about Chris Nilsen first!
His 19-2.75 PR set some serious wheels spinning--out of control!!
That mark moved him from 7th A-T Collegiate, tied with 3 others, to 4th, tied with 1 other!
But it was his move up the US All-Time ladder that blew apart that page in my Record Book!!
For it FINALLY allowed me to REMOVE a giant list of names from my expanded list (normally limited to 24, except in case of ties!)!
Here's the deal!
My OUTdoor US list had a HUGE amount of ties at the bottom---10, to be exact!
So when Nilsen moved UP, I was able to throw those other ten OFF!!
Nilsen moved from 24th A-T US, tied with those 10 others, to 14th, where he's tied with just one other!
So, WHO got kicked OUT??
I'll just list the ones from the last century--the 20th!
Scott Hennig's 19-0.25 dated from 1998.
Doug Fraley and Dave Volz's 19-0.25 were from 1992.
Billy Olson was the oldest, dating from 1987!
And then there was Mr Duplantis--and here I speak of Greg, NOT Mondo!!
Yep, Daddy Greg's 19-0.25 from 1993 is now GONE too!!
BTW, Nilsen earlier--at the Drake Relays--went over 18-11.50, but lost to Sam Kendricks's 19-1.50!
That mark gave Military Sam the Meet Record!
Some Women's PV results were good also!
And speaking of Drake, let's begin there!
They had TWO events--one held at a Mall, the other inside Drake's stadium!
The Mall event went to the ubiquitous Jenn Suhr and her 15-9 clearance!
That defeated the 15-5's of Katie Nageotte and Sandi Morris, who placed 2nd & 3rd, respectively!
Things turned a bit more serious inside the arena!
There, Morris reached 16-0, which gave her the Meet Record!
Suhr took 2nd with 15-5!
Nageotte et al were further back!
The Doha PV was good too!
There, Morris broke her own Meet Record (by a half inch!), clearing 15-10.50!
Five others trailed behind, each going over 15-2.75!
They were Holly Bradshaw, Robelys Peinado, Ms Nageotte, Nikoleta Kiriakopoulou, and Ekaterina Stefanidi!
Not about Results, but if you get the chance, watch Ato Boldon's latest You Tube interview show!
He talks with that ebullient Ms Stefanidi, who talks about going to Stanford, and her Rio experience--before and after!
She's a really charming--and talkative lady!!
The other pair of Jumps had their moments in the Sun also!
And who else but Mutaz Barshim would be the most prominent Male name to emerge!!
He reached the 2.40 mark--7-10.50--in the Doha DL!
Then took 3 shots at 2.42--or 7-11.25!!
Could this be the year when he hits the Top??
Jeff Henderson leapt out to a 27-8.25 LJ in a meet in Utah!
But it was the Shanghai DL that saw Luvo Manyonga nail a 28-1 LJ!
It was enough to cover the 27-8 by China's Yihao Shi (sp?).
So let's return to Mr Mondo!!
All HE did was add a measly half-inch to his PR--a 19-5.50 Vault!
It was at his State meet in Louisiana!!
(You can imagine how far back his "opponents" were!!)
And all it took was 4 Vaults---FOUR!!
He needed a pair to clear his opener at 17-10.50.
Then he got over 19-1 and his new PR on first tries!!
And he was done!!
Wow!!
This is getting a bit monotonous, but his latest broke his own High School, Senior Class, Age 18, and Swedish National Records!!
And he's now a mere 0.75 inches removed from joining my WORLD All-Time list!!
OK, friends, that about wraps up the REALLY serious stuff from this Jumps phase of the past 3 weeks!
But I do have several more marks to report, so I'll gather them together below for your easier perusal!
(And it saves space as well!!)
An early meet in Arkansas found Lexi Jacobus beating her twin sister Tori Hoggard, both clearing 14-9.50!
Then, at the SEC meet, Jacobus again dominated, but this time at a new Collegiate PR of 15-3!
(She's gone over 15-5, but that was AFTER the NCAA meet!)
She remains 3rd A-T Collegiate, and gets the Junior Class Record!
Hoggard again ended 2nd, going over 14-9!
At that earlier Arkansas meet, Yanis David TJ'ed 46-4.25, making her 7th A-T Collegiate!
In 2nd came Marie Josee Ebwea-Bile's 45-11.25, which made her 12th A-T Collegiate!
Jumping around (Sic!!), Vashti Cunningham won the Drake HJ with her 6-4.25!
NOT a good year (so far!) for the Women's HJ!
But Katie Isenberger's 6-1 misses my HS list by just a quarter inch!
Loretta Blaut won the American Conference with her 6-2!
At Penn, however, a Kansas State Frosh named Tejaswan Shankar HJ'ed 7-6!
A Virginia meet found Bridget Guy (of Virginia!) PV'ing 14-7.50!
Then, at the ACC meet, Ms Guy (who is a Gal! LOL) hit 14-7.25, defeating Lisa Gunnarsson, who had the same mark!
KC Lightfoot continues his great season!
At Mt SAC, he cleared 18-1, not a PR!
But then at his State meet, he soared over 18-5!!
This moves him from 5th A-T HS, tied with 1 other, to 2nd!
Not sure whose mark came first, but we have yet another HS 18 footer!!
His name is Branson Ellis!
And you won't believe this, but Jack Shepard's HS Track book says his 2017 PR (as a Junior) was a mere 16-4.75!!
Now?
His new PR is a whopping 18-3.25!!
(Do we have here the Male version of Tori Franklin?? See above!)
This made him 4th A-T HS, but Lightfoot's mark moved him down one notch to 5th!
He's the 13th HS'er to clear 18 feet OUTdoors!!
The ACC meet saw Nate Richartz PV 18-8.25, giving him the Meet Record!
This makes him 20th A-T Collegiate, tied with 7 others!
A Texas A&M Junior named Tahan Tribi (sp??) TJ'ed 55-5.75, leaving him just 2.50 inches shy of my Collegiate DDD!
Last but not least, I'll finish this Jumpy (LOL) post with a wind-aided mark!
Jasmine Moore TJ'ed 45-4.75---but it was wind-aided!!
However, this makes me think a LEGAL 45'er is coming--and maybe soon!!
Next post (See above!) will cover the world of Sprints!
See you soon!!
(Hi, Syd!! LOL)

We're BACK!!
Hello---again!
Missed me (and this blog)??
On April 22nd--just a couple of hours or so after my last posting---my computer went and died on me!!
Long story short, I got a repair guy & it was repaired & I'm back!!
(Short $180!!!)
So, what's next?
For all my (one or two) fans, I intend to pick up where I left off 22 days ago!
Meaning, readers will be able to read about ALL the Records & Marks this blog has been reporting on since its inception on December 9th, 2013!!
That includes results from "Relays weekend"---Drake, Penn, etc!
It also means I'll fully cover what happened at Payton Jordan and Doha!
(And everything else worthy of note!)
I expect I'll need to spread things out over a MINIMUM of two lengthy posts---maybe 3!!
As my readers know, my main source for this blog is my own T&F Record Book!
Thus, WHILE compiling all the notes needed for my blog, I will simultaneously be updating my Record Book!!
It could take me a full day or more!!
Maybe 48 hours!
As soon as I have everything compiled & updated, I'll write the posts!!
So expect news of Drake et all to begin in a day or two!
Thanks for your patience!
See you soon---all two of you!!
