2015 World Championships Schedule

As promised, this post will give you the complete event schedule for all 9 days of the Beijing WC.
A few notes.

1. Time of event is NOT given.  But I will separate the morning session events from the afternoon/evening session events.
2. The time difference between Beijing and the Pacific Time zone is 15 hours.  (So the Men's Marathon, set to start at 7:35 a.m. of the 22nd in Beijing, would start at 4:35 p.m. of the 21st here in Washington state!  And so on!)
3. While I'll have separate posts for each gender for the results, I'm grouping both gender's events here--in the basic order given on the IAAF schedule/results website.
4. There is a space between the morning and afternoon/evening sessions.
5. For the Multi's, I will indicate which events are in each session.
6. M-Men; W-Women; P-Prelims (Valid for the 100's ONLY!); H-Heats; S-Semi's; F-Final; Q-Qualifying (For ALL Field events!)

That means I'll have it posted BEFORE 4:35 p.m Pacific Time on Friday, August 21st!!
(See Note above about time differences!)

I'll also name names, as to WHO should be the major players.
Also a few names too fascinating to ignore!

The Predictions will come in TWO posts--one for each gender!

See you SOON!!

  1. When Genzebe breaks the 5K WR held by sister Tirunesh, will this be the first time in the history of the sport -- man or woman -- that a WR has been broken by a sibling of the record holder?

Similarly, at present we have siblings Tirunesh (5K) and Genzebe (1500m) both holding WRs. Is this unprecedented?

There have been many outstanding sibling pairs, but I'm not aware of any case besides the Dibaba sisters where both were world record holders. Do you know of any?

  2. Without doing intensive research, can't think of any.
With Genzebe holding the INdoor WR, and Tirunesh the OUTdoor WR, they're the only ones on the WR level I can think of.

But on the HSR level--and I try to give fairly equal weight to HSR's as I do to WR's--you have Tori Weeks with the INdoor HSR, and Lexi with the OUTdoor HSR.

Considering only WR's, US NR's, CR's, and HSR's, can't think of anyone else who matches the Dibaba's or the Weeks's!

As for other blood-related pairings---sisters, brothers, mother-child, father-child, or husband-wife, there's MANY where one has held one of the Major records, while the other has been pretty good too, but maybe NOT a recod holder!

A few off the top of my head include....
    Carl and Carol Lewis
    Lewis & Cameron Burrell
    Billy & Demi Payne
    Matt & Matthew Centrowitz
    Bernard & Violah Lagat
(Thought Edith & Linet Masai were related, but just looked it up, and they're not!)
    Ashton & Brianne Thiessen-Eaton
Cheryl (Bridges) Treworgy & Shalane Flanagan
    Renaud & Valentin Lavillenie
The Press sisters of the former Soviet Union
    Tiffany Porter & Cindy Ofili

Hope you liked the schedule presentation!!
    See you Friday!!

  3. OOPS!!
I meant LEROY, not "Lewis", Burrell!!

  4. Remembered a few more.

    There's Al and Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
The Clark family--Joetta, Hazel, and Jearl Miles-Clark.
The Borlee's of Belgium--3 brothers and 1 sister.
The Howards--Denean, Sheri (sp?) & 1 other, I believe, but can't remember her name.
    Vashti & Randy Cunningham.

A couple of others that come to mind---but not yet at the same level as most of the above---

Wesley and Ryen Frazier. (Especially if Wesley returns to form!)
    The Aragon's--Christine & Danielle & maybe 1 more!
    Mark Coogan & Katrina Coogan.

And I'm sure there's many others from around the world and throughout the entire history of the sport!!

  5. "With Genzebe holding the INdoor WR, and Tirunesh the OUTdoor WR, they're the only ones on the WR level I can think of."

Of course Genzebe also holds the outdoor WR at 1500m.

You have provided the beginning of a long list of accomplished siblings. I can think of several others, including the Bubka bothers, but I was trying to focus on sibling pairs of WR record holders, and I think the Dibaba sisters may the only ones to qualify in the entire history of the sport. I'm not sure about that, but so far no others have been mentioned or come to mind.

  6. You mentioned HS records and the Weeks twins.

I think that at one time the Skipper brothers both held HS records: Art in the javelin and Tommy in the pole vault.

There is also the Crouser family, though some are cousins. Haley (girls javelin), Sam (boys javelin), and Ryan (boys discus).

  7. Sorry, thought you meant WR holders in the same event!!
That's why I mentioned just the IN & OUT 5000's.

As for the others I listed, not all were siblings.
    I listed a few parent/child combo's, and at least one (the Clark's) included a sister-in-law (Jearl Miles-Clark).

Thanks for adding the Skipper's and the Crouser's.
As I noted, my list was "off the top of my head", so I was sure I'd left out several combo's of names!!

Something along these lines was done on the t&FN MB last winter, back when Demi Payne was rising in the ranks.
They added the 2 marks (brothers, as in the Bubka's or Lavillenie's, or parent/child, as with the Payne's), seeing who had the best same-event totals.

In that case, if you combine IN & OUT times (which, as you know, I keep separate!!), then Genzebe's 14:18.86 & Tiru's 14:11.15 add to 28:30.01.

    WOW!!!!
Just discovered a HUGE omission in my 2015 Athletics Annual book!!
Was doing a bit of research to get the EXACT time Genzebe ran INdoors.
The A-A book includes the entire INdoor list from that year---thus my 2015 Annual includes the entire 2015 INdoor lists!!

    Well, guess what?
    Genzebe's 14:18.86 is NOT there!!
Emily Sisson's 15:12 is listed as the best mark!!
(Amazing she was 2nd on the list to Dibaba!!!)
But they DO have Genzebe's ENROUTE (& officially timed!) 3000 time of 8:37+.
I wonder if they know of their omission!!
(The mark is mentioned in the Book's athlete bio section!!!)

Anyway, back to researching my posts for tomorrow!.
